Best $20 I've spent on a show in years!! The band was absolutely phenomenal!! The closest I could ever get to seeing Led Zeppelin and The Who! The newly renovated Variety Playhouse is now perfection, there isn't a bad seat in the whole venue and the sound quality is perfect! This was the best father daughter concert!

Incredible show at the Gothic in Denver last night! Go see them if you can score a ticket!!! Don't forget to wear a captain's hat and be prepared to dance!

Acclaimed cover band Yacht Rock Revue will be embarking on a mammoth 21-date tour across America taking place in 2023. Their Reverse Sunset Tour kicks off May 12th in Birmingham and stretches into September making additional stops in Orlando, Philadelphia, New York, Denver, San Diego and Phoenix. The new outing follows up 2021's Hot Dads in Tight Jeans Tour which continued into 2022.

Yacht Rock Revue will continue performing their own renditions of soft rock hits of the 70’s and 80's from acts like Hall & Oates , Michael McDonald and Steely Dan . Since forming in 2007, they've shared the stage with John Oates , Eddie Money , Little River Band , Pablo Cruise , Starship , Denny Laine , Robbie Dupree , Elliot Lurie , Peter Beckett and Bill Champlin among many others. The 7-piece band currently consists of members Peter Olson, Nicholas Niespodziani, Mark Cobb, Greg Lee, Mark Bencuya, Mark Dannells, and David Freeman.

Yacht Rock singer to play dream venue

Put Nick Niespodziani in the group of people who will remember Ruoff Music Center as Deer Creek.

The Yacht Rock Revue lead singer grew up in Columbus, Ind., and has many fond memories of concerts at the Noblesville venue, originally called Deer Creek Music Center.

“I remember seeing Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Lenny Kravitz and so many great concerts,” Niespodziani said. “It was a core memory-forming place for me.”

So Niespodziani is delighted his band will open at 6:25 p.m. July 10 for Train and REO Speedwagon at Ruoff.

“I’m so excited to play Deer Creek. This is a childhood dream coming true,” he said. “It’s going to be a really full circle moment.”

Niespodziani, 45, is a founding member of the Atlanta-based band, which started in 2007. Six of the nine members have been there since the beginning. 

This is by far the biggest and longest tour for the group. 

“I’m in my 40s and I’ve never been on a tour bus before,” Niespodziani said just before the tour started July 1. “We’ve always done vans and trailers and flown out to regional and done a little run and then flown home. This is 40-plus shows in 2 1/2 months. This is new territory for us.”

Niespodziani said the group must narrow its long setlist down.

“People want to hear all the greatest hits of the 1960s and 1970s and we have 45 minutes to do it, which is a lot different than 2 hours and 20 minutes, so we have to be efficient,” he said. “I would guess if we don’t play ‘Baker Street’ at Deer Creek (people will be disappointed). Maybe ‘Brandy’ by Looking Glass, ‘What a Fool Believes’ by Michael McDonald and ‘The Pina Colada Song.’ You start naming them all, but you want to have some surprises.”

Niespodziani said the band will perform some of its original songs. 

“When we get to Ruoff, we’ll be just about to release the second single from this new collection of songs we recorded,” he said. “At first, it was kind of nerve-racking to play our own songs not knowing how they were going to react. I think we’ve earned their trust at this point. We try to stay within the genre and stay within ourselves and give it a little something you haven’t heard before.”

Yacht Rock Revue pays tribute to smooth rock classics that are more relevant than ever

Providing entertainment and relaxation for their audience is always top of mind for the members of Yacht Rock Revue. The smooth rock tribute band has been jamming in front of live audiences for nearly two decades, and it shows no signs of chilling out — unlike its music.

These purveyors of pure relaxation will bring their nostalgic sound to Coralville’s 4thFest on July 3. Ahead of its concert, Yacht Rock Revue frontman and singer Nicholas Niespodziani expressed how exciting it is to play for large crowds. When the band formed in Atlanta in 2007, it was mostly restricted to clubs and small venues.

“We were playing in places that are sweaty and drunk, it was a debaucherous time,” Niespodziani said. “Now we’re older and distinguished and playing big venues with massive audiences, and people treat us like artists.”

The band wasn’t always strictly a yacht rock group. Several band members, including another founding member and frontman Peter Olson, formed an indie rock band first. It wasn’t until a gig which was initially intended to be a one-off show that Yacht Rock Revue was formed.

To fit the style of the club they were performing at, the band members played a few soft rock classics and immediately noticed a reaction from the crowd. Choosing the genre the band would adhere to wasn’t a long deliberation process. It happened then and there.

“It was pretty much an accident,” Niespodziani said. “People loved it so much that the club owner told us we needed to come back, and so we did.”

The band was made up entirely of Atlanta musicians at the time, many of whom were in school. Although they had experienced minor success with their indie rock venture, with songs in local commercials and going on small tours, the band shifted to yacht rock completely and renamed itself “’70s AM Gold,” a name which would not last long as they quickly learned the term “yacht rock” drew much more attention.

Niespodziani dropped out of law school, and the band became real. Now bolstering a roster of 10 band members, Yacht Rock Revue has only grown since its humble beginnings in 2007.

Throughout their career, they’ve played alongside various artists whose music they tribute every night. When being joined on stage by the very legends who inspire them, they find they’re met with skepticism at first.

“We’re on stage with old-timers who say, ‘What is this? Who is this tribute band?’ But as as they realize how serious we are about the music, we win them over,” Niespodziani explained. The band’s dedication to revitalizing the music has landed it an opening act spot on tour with Train and REO Speedwagon this summer.

“It’s going to be nuts. We’re playing in giant amphitheaters on a level we’ve never experienced before,” Niespodziani said excitedly. As soon as the band leaves 4thFest, it’ll be hopping in tour buses to play to larger crowds than it’s ever seen. “We’re hopeful we can win over REO Speedwagon too.”

Both their 4thFest appearance and nationwide tour are stops in their usually 80-100-show year. Despite the high number of performances, Niespodziani never finds himself growing tired of it. In a time when yacht rock seems to be growing in popularity once again, the band is experiencing more and more success.

“We’re trying to bring that yacht vibe back to 2024,” Niespodziani explained. “It’s music of escape; it’s made to get away from the troubles of the world.”

At a time when people need an escape from the world more than ever, Yacht Rock Revue will bring its nostalgic sound and calming atmosphere to Coralville’s 4th Fest. Niespodziani is as excited as the audience is to experience the concert.

“I love what I do, singing songs that make people happy,” said Niespodziani. “It’s a great way to unplug, sing silly songs, and have fun. That’s why the music is so timeless.”

About Yacht Rock Revue

What is left for Yacht Rock Revue to prove? This top-notch group of musicians has already rocked onstage with John Oates, Eddie Money (RIP), and both versions of the band Player. They’ve trademarked the term “yacht rock,” both metaphorically and literally (U.S. Registration Number 3834195). From humble beginnings in a basement, touring in partnership with Live Nation and Sirius XM, they now headline sold-out shows across the country, from Webster Hall in New York to the Wiltern in L.A. While rising from bars to amphitheaters, t hey’ve ticked every box on the Rock Star Accomplishments bingo card. Except for one: Writing and singing their own songs.

Yacht Rock Revue’s first original record is ten songs inspired by the smoooooth sounds of the Seventies and Eighties. They’ve brazenly titled it Hot Dads In Tight Jeans – forgive them for bragging, but that’s what they are – and it returns Yacht Rock Revue to their roots in original music. It’s rare that musicians in their 40s chase their rock star dreams. You’d have to be crazy to try. YRR knew they were underdogs, but resolved to take one more shot at the Top 40, and maybe even become a Cinderella story of midlife fulfillment.

Yacht Rock Revue began in the least-yachtiest of states, 2,000 miles from breezy Marina del Rey. Nick Niespodziani, the group’s singer, guitarist and spiritual leader, and Pete Olson met in the fourth grade in suburban Indiana, went on to Indiana University in the late Nineties, formed the band Y-O-U, then escaped – Rupert Holmes reference intended – to Atlanta. One night, Y-O-U tucked their tongues deep in their cheeks and played a show of Yacht Rock songs. The rowdy (a nice way of saying drunk), sold-out crowd loved it. When the club owner asked them to do it again, Niespodziani didn’t want to. But the club owner had an ace up his sleeve: money.

Over the years, YRR (there’s also a Dave, a Greg, and literally three guys named Mark) have turned themselves into human wine spritzers, playing 120 to 150 shows a year, mastering Yacht Rock’s slick chords and mellow grooves, and partying like it’s 1979. What began as a joke among friends soon put a ripple in the zeitgeist, starting a national trend through YRR’s concerts, lauded as “unabashedly joyous affairs” by Entertainment Weekly. They accumulated an extensive wardrobe of white belts and polyester shirts. Yacht Rock Revue were revered and well-compensated! Their life was a tenor sax solo! This is what every musician wants.

But even as YRR was sailing the smooth seas of tribute-band superstardom, and the band members all became dads, Niespodziani was still writing original songs. These new tunes had the spirit of Yacht Rock, but were more modern – akin to Phoenix or Air, the hip bands that adapted Yacht for a younger audience. They brought the songs to a hot producer, Ben Allen, who’s worked with Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, and Neon Indian. Allen gave the songsa lustrous shine, for both new audiences and their ever-loyal fans, the Nation of Smooth. Niespodziani and Olson even co-wrote a song, “Big Bang,” with Yacht Rock master Matthew Wilder, famous for his massive 1983 hit “Break My Stride.”

“Step,” the record’s first single, is a peppy number replete with falsetto and bumping bass, a cross between the Bee Gees and Steely Dan’s “Peg.” It’s also the mission statement for the album in a way, because it’s about deciding who you want to be, and making space for that in your life. The seven-piece band display tight chops, and the songs incorporate Yacht Rock Revue’s sense of humor, especially on the funky, pro-margarita “Bad Tequila,” the flute-fired “Another Song About California,” and opening track “The Doobie Bounce,” where Niespodziani brags, “I used to sleep on couches/Now I sleep on nicer couches.”

Hot Dads In Tight Jeans is as plush and shiny as Kenny Loggins’ beard. And YRR are already dropping these new songs into their sets, to great response from longtime fans who are thrilled to hear new smooth. While others in YRR’s position stick with the tried-and-true, Niespodziani hopes the album will let them welcome aboard new fans, too. To paraphrase a notable mariner… they’re gonna need a bigger yacht.
