Leopard Catamarans taken over by a Dream Yacht shareholder

Robertson & Caine shipyard, manufacturer of Leopard Catamarans multihulls. The acquisition by PPF is not insignificant for the boat rental sector where it plays a major role.

The investment fund PPF, which entered the nautical sector in 2021 via its entry into the Dream Yacht group, is making a major new acquisition. The structure, created in 1991 in the Czech Republic and now present throughout the world, has announced the expansion of its nautical division by acquiring the South African shipyard Robertson and Caine, renowned for its Leopard Catamarans brand, from its founders and shareholders, for an amount that remains confidential. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2023.

Growth of the boating industry and leverage in rental

For PFF, this strategic choice is explained by its confidence in the creation of long-term value in the marine sector. The fund says it wants to fulfill Robertson and Caine's commitments in the sailing and power catamaran markets, and to help develop future Leopard brand boats.

As a majority shareholder of the Dream Yacht Group, PPF also acquires a significant potential lever for the development of its fleet. The delivery capacities of all the multihull shipyards are currently struggling to meet the demands of charterers. For many years, Leopard Catamarans has been linked to the large Anglo-Saxon charter company Sunsail The Moorings , for which it produces many boats. The balance is now shifting in favor of Dream Yacht Charter with this common capital link, although no exclusivity is mentioned. As a reminder, the Bénéteau Group is a shareholder in Dream Yacht alongside PPF, with a 40% stake.

One of the most stylish as well as technologically advanced vessels ever launched, the 30m (100ft) supermaxi charter yacht Leopard 3 has broken countless world records. Boasting one of the most famous names in yacht racing history, the Leopard 3 superyacht is owned by charismatic leading industrialist, Mike Slade, one of the most famous personalities in the sport.

This year, Slade is celebrating 25 years of yacht racing and his 100ft sailing yacht Leopard 3 has just completed an extensive refit at the Oyster Group ‘s Southampton Yacht Services yard (SYS). For the last six months, Leopard has occupied the Custom and Refit Hall at the superb SYS waterside facilities in Saxon Wharf, alongside three of Oyster’s fantastic, new Oyster 885s, the first of which will be launched in August for Formula 1 racing pundit Eddie Jordan’s family trust.

Leopard 3 superyacht will make her return to racing following her refit at SYS in the J P Morgan Round the Island Race on Saturday 30 June, where she will be defending her title and the monohull record set in 2008 of 3hrs, 53 mins, 05 secs.

Leopard 3 Superyacht New Luxurious Interior

Leopard 3 Superyacht New Luxurious Interior

Chris Sherlock, Leopard 3 yacht’s Captain for over 20 years, spoke to journalist Louay Habib about the six-month project to provide Leopard with a stunning, luxury interior. Why did you decide to put an interior into Leopard?

Leopard was always meant to have an interior but for several reasons it was originally built without one. The owner has always wanted to cruise Leopard with his friends and family and he loves to live on board. Besides setting numerous world records and racing at grand prix regattas, Leopard is also in high demand for corporate charter and a full interior would definitely provide better facilities for guests.

Why did you decide to bring Leopard to SYS?

I know for a fact that if I had taken the boat to another yard and asked them to carry out the work, it would have cost far more than taking it to SYS. I went to several yards I have used over many years. One of them was in France and the labour rate was high and it would mean setting up base in another country with a foreign language. Carrying out the refit in the UK was the best option as the owner is here, the boat is VAT registered in the UK and it is also the yacht’s home. In 2009, we used another yard for a major refit, which worked well. However this refit was a lot more technical and the expertise that I needed was very complex.

In 1992, Ocean Leopard was refitted at Saxon Wharf and Leopard 2000 had all of the electrical and hydraulic design and engineering carried out there. I took a drive down there and found out that one of the refit halls was available. I was delighted to find out that the same guys were still there 20 years on, which made me confident that I was going to get the job done and, more importantly, I knew that we would work as a team. It was a complex refit and I needed someone to work with us rather than give them the boat. So we started working out a deal with Technical Director, Harvey Jones and Managing Director, Robert Kathro.

I wanted SYS to handle the fit out of the new accommodation that would be going into the front of the boat but it had to integrate with the systems that had been so reliable for over four years. So I wanted to use the original team from Australia to design the new systems and SYS to implement it, as it would be far more economical. However this needed everybody to get on and I have to say that the end result is something that we are extremely pleased with.

Mike Slade was very impressed with the beautiful interiors that he had seen on Oyster yachts and also as Oyster has built so many boats, they have a really good understanding of what features really work. The original deal was a fixed contract with SYS to provide the new accommodation forward of the saloon but after seeing the standard of the work. I decided to employ them to refit the galley area as well.

SYS created the bespoke interior from scratch, manufacturing every piece of the interior on site at Saxon Wharf. We wanted a super-light composite interior but with an Oyster look and I think we have very much achieved that.

I have to say that SYS ticked all the boxes; a big enough hall, excellent skilled labour and we have worked with them over the years, which made us feel very comfortable. In the end it was a fair deal for us and for them. In fact, I signed the project off and SYS sent their quality control team down to have a final look and they put in three days of extra work touching up and French polishing, that’s the attention to detail that they are accustomed to. We have ended up with a lovely product and it couldn’t have worked out better, the quality of their work is fantastic.

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns leopard 3 yacht

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

Leopard 3 Declared Overall Winner of 2024 RORC Caribbean 600

Leopard 3 Sailboat

The Royal Ocean Racing Club has announced that the Farr 100 Leopard 3 (MON), skippered by Joost Schuijff is the overall winner of the 2024 RORC Caribbean 600 . While 24 boats are still racing under the IRC rating rule, none of the teams still at sea can better Leopard 3’s time after IRC time correction.

Leopard 3 Crew: Joost Schuijff, Chris Sherlock, Mitch Booth, Aaron Reynolds-Lovegrove, Antonio Cuervas Mons, Carlos Hernandez Robayna, Charlie Wyatt, Dennis Frederiksen, Gerard Mitchell, Gian Ahluwalia, Giles de Jager, Guillermo Altadill, Mark Bartlett, Matthew Lester, Paul Standbridge, Samuel Wright, Stephen Booth, Tom McWilliam, Will Best.

The podium for IRC Overall for the RORC Caribbean 600 is also confirmed with Leopard 3 as the victor. Second is Niklas Zennstrom’s Carkeek 52 Rán (SWE) which has won a highly competitive IRC Zero Class by just three minutes after time correction from Peter & David Askew’s Botin 52 Wizard (USA).

Leopard 3 was one of the race founding entries, setting the original race record in 2009 and taking Monohull Line Honours again in 2013. However, in the previous eight races that Leopard 3 has competed in, this year is the first occasion that Leopard 3 has won the race overall under IRC. Leopard 3 is now 17 years old but is faster than ever due to a major refit by the new owners, including shedding 10 tons of weight and increasing sail area aloft under a brand new mast.

“ When I woke up this morning and found out that Leopard had won overall it was quite amazing, I am very proud of the team and the boat, ” commented Joost Schuijff. “ It is a magnificent experience and a very special feeling. When I look at the Trophy, I see so many names of such famous boats. I am delighted for the team that the name Leopard 3 will be engraved there too. It’s all about the people and not just the race crew, but also the permanent crew and the build team – the team is super important; without the right people you cannot get the maximum performance from Leopard. Winning in Antigua is also special because myself and my family love coming here; the area is so nice and people are so friendly. To win the RORC Caribbean 600 in such a historic place for yachting is extraordinary. ”

sailing

Chris Sherlock has been central to the Leopard team since its conception 30 years ago with the former owner Mike Slade. Sherlock was one of three of this year’s team that was on the boat for the first edition in 2009; Crew Boss Paul Standbridge and Boat Captain Gian Ahluwalia.

“ It took 15 years and nine attempts to win overall, so it’s a big achievement and wonderful for the owners who have invested a lot of time and energy, and just fantastic to see that pay off, ” commented Chris Sherlock. “ The whole Leopard ethos started long ago and that was to bring young people into the sport and give them opportunity; it’s nice that we still have several team members that are still part of that. Over the years so many Leopard crew have gone on to do round the world races and under the new ownership that has not changed. ”

On winning on IRC corrected time from world class opposition, Chris Sherlock commented: “ The stars have all got to line up and they did for this race. First you have to finish the yacht race and the amicable preparation by the whole team is very much part of the success. Then you have to win your IRC Class, and then it is in the wind god’s hands. We know the Rán team very well; Niklas (Zennstrom) chartered Leopard for a Transatlantic Race Record and we know Rán will have done everything to beat Leopard, but this year, it was our turn. Antigua is Leopard’s spiritual home in the Caribbean and personally I was here in 1992 with Ocean Leopard. It’s great to win your home Grand Prix. ”

Seven Stars revives iconic brand Leopard Yachts

Leopard Yachts, an iconic Italian brand since the early seventies, has been re-launched by Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard near Pisa. Andrea Bacigalupo, one of Leopard’s original naval architects, has designed the new range’s streamlined hull. The interior and additions on each individual 36m yacht are fully customisable, with Monaco brokers TWW Yachts overseeing contracts and construction.    Davide Mugnaini, CEO of Seven Stars Marina and Shipyard, told SuperyachtNews , “We are very much focused on retaining the exclusivity of Leopard Yachts. We will be building one, two… maybe three yachts every year, and every boat will be tailor made and crafted to suit the needs of the owner… We are bringing with us everything from the old brand, while at the same time, we are changing and adapting everything to the future. The iconic lines, the best engineering, as well as the high performance and speed are all main features of our future strategy.” Following on from Mugnainis’ comments, brand manager Carlo Pittis said,

“Simply taking the name and using it would be easy. What we plan to do is enhance and reinvigorate the very best aspects of Leopard to give the client something really special.”

The fruitful history of Leopard Yachts began in 1907 when the Picchiotti family first established the Giuseppe Picchiotti e Figli shipyard. However, it wasn’t until 1973 when the Picchiotti family, based in Italy’s Tuscany coast, collaborated with naval architect Paolo Caliari to create the first Leopard Yacht. These sleek motor yachts were celebrated for their speed, reliability, comfort and elegance. From 2000, Leopard Yachts' newest models were constructed at Tombolo Shipyard, located on the Canale dei Navicelli between Pisa and Livorno.

In 2019, Seven Stars Marina & Shipyard acquired Tombolo Shipyard. The company's CEO Davide Mugnaini affirmed his long-held fascination with Leopard Yachts. “Seven Stars specialises in creating tailor-made yachts for demanding owners,” Mugnaini explained. “But with Leopard, the importance in relaunching a renowned Italian brand made the challenge even more interesting.”   Mugnaini researched Leopard Yachts’ compelling backstory, with a view to reviving the legendary brand. He travelled to Genoa to meet Andre Bacigalupo, Caliari's student and Leopard’s designer since 2000. To his delight, Mugnaini found that Bacigalupo had continued to perfect his Leopard Yacht designs and drawings as a private passion.

“We had a mutual respect for Leopard’s history,” stated Mugnaini. “Combined with Seven Stars’ technical know-how, it has made our collaboration on the relaunch of Leopard Yachts an act of love.”

The newly-revived range of Leopard Yachts will be produced in the Tombolo shipyard by Seven Stars, where Leopards have historically been built. The first 36m will be ready to hit the water just 24 months after signing. This model is said to boast contemporary interiors and more efficiency than the original.

About Robertson & Caine

The builders behind the boats.

John Robertson and the late Jerry Caine founded Roberston and Caine LTD, South Africa’s largest boat builder, in 1991. With over 30 years of boat building history, they have launched over 1800 boats, and are currently one of the top competitors in the international catamaran market and South Africa’s largest boat-builder manufacturing for the export market.

Originally, the company created custom sailing yachts, ranging from 36ft fiberglass monohulls to 70ft state-of-the-art carbon-fibre racing boats. The latest innovative offerings include the 40ft, the 45ft, the 50ft, and the 58ft sailing catamarans as well as the 43ft and 51ft Powercat. These models are destined for the world’s exotic sailing grounds, including the US East Coast, the Caribbean, the Seychelles, the Mediterranean, Asia and the South Pacific.

As a result of continued innovation and quality, Robertson & Caine remains a serious competitor in the international catamaran market and continues to enjoy a dominant position in the significant North American market. Robertson and Caine’s Leopard Catamarans are currently the #1 Selling brand of catamaran in North America. The company has produced an impressive list of racers and cruisers, including international winners adding remarkable credits to its name over the past decade including Boat of the Year 1995, 1998, 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2017, 2019.

Robertson and Caine’s production facility is head quartered in Woodstock, a few kilometers from the Cape Town city centre and the harbour. The company is currently producing and launching approximately three boats a week and there are several new exciting projects currently in the pipeline.

Leopard 3 Wins 2024 RORC Caribbean 600 After Major Refit

Leopard 3, skippered by Joost Schuijff, is declared the overall winner of the 2024 RORC Caribbean 600 by the Royal Ocean Racing Club. The team secured victory in the IRC Overall category after none of the remaining 24 boats could best their time after correction.

The victory of Leopard 3 marks a significant achievement in the yacht racing world, especially with the boat's impressive history and the major refit it underwent to enhance its performance.

  • Leopard 3 is 17 years old and underwent a significant refit by the new owners, shedding 10 tons of weight and increasing sail area aloft under a new mast.
  • The team on Leopard 3 consists of 18 members, including skipper Joost Schuijff and crew members Chris Sherlock, Mitch Booth, and others.
  • Leopard 3 sets the original race record in 2009 and has now clinched victory in the RORC Caribbean 600 overall for the first time.
  • Leopard 3's win in Antigua holds a special significance for the team, with the boat's rich history and the dedication of its crew contributing to the victory.

On Friday, 23 February, Leopard 3 will be presented with the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy at the RORC Caribbean 600 Prizegiving, marking a prestigious moment for the team and solidifying their place in yacht racing history.

Leopard 3's remarkable win in the 2024 RORC Caribbean 600 underlines the significance of dedication, strategic enhancements, and teamwork in achieving success in competitive yacht racing.
