I purchased a new Grady White and my Salesman recommended that I Contact Tim Mullins at Octopus Yachts to discuss options for the full array of electronics that my new boat would require. During a fifteen-minute phone conversation, Tim asked all of the right questions and guided me thru the choices and options available. He then followed up with emailed copies of each unit and pricing for my review and approval. Without hesitation, Twin 16" Garmin Multifunction Touch Display units with Sonar, VHS radio, and Eperb were on ord...   read more

Stupendous, Expert, Artisan, Honest and Friendly are the adjectives that I would use to describe Aaron and his staff at Octopus Yacht. It is easy to compare prices and widgets in today online world. But what is really important is customer service after the sale and installation. Boats like homes are becoming more and more complex. And with this complexity can come frustration. The last thing that you want at 1am when you are leaving to head 100 miles away from land is a bird nest of unidentified wires or do it yourself precision for you navigational equipment. Aaron attacks his installations with the mind of an engineer. The details are important, and installation is planned out, wires and fuses are labeled and placed logically. His staff is attentive, courteous and has always treat our boats with respect. It is great that Aaron boats in the area that he services, he is a growing business that want to do right by his customers. In a very challenging somewhat seasonal business I have often talked to Aaron in off business hours on a Friday night when he was trying to save some families weekend. In this hobby getting weather and schedules to align is always a challenge. We enjoy doing business with a person that invests in his staff and his community. And at the same time understands how important a weekend on the boat is to a family!

Extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of marine electronics and custom fabrication. Prices match the level of professionalism. They will go above and beyond to make sure that not only you receive the highest quality installation but you understand how to operate and navigate all your systems.

Absolutely horrible!!!! Asked them to fix my depth finder. They couldn't fix it and charged me $1000, told me my radar had a recall and they could take care of that for free. Constantly asking for authorization for payment before work was done. Ended up taking boat somewhere else and they fixed depth finder easily. Got boat back and radar doesn't work. Called them and the blamed it on the people who fixed the depth finder!!!!! Unreal! $1000, couldn't fix my problem and made something that was working perfectly, not work!!!!!!! I would never use them again or recommend them to anyone!!!

Hi Lance, I apologize if we were unclear how the complex, integrated Simrad system on your boat depends on each part to be in working order to function as a whole. I don't want to leave your electronics issue unresolved, please reach out to me via email, phone or text so we can set up a time for you and I to meet onboard together and go over the system in person. -Aaron

Unparalleled Performance, Reliability, and Durability!

We have been designing, manufacturing and marketing autopilot drives for over 20 years.  we hold patents on several unique devices that enhance drive performance, and supply drives to most of the marine industry’s leading autopilot manufactures for resale within their autopilot packages., testimonials.

At Sound Sailing Center, we like to research and select the best products for our customers. This is certainly one of the reasons we are often the largest East Coast dealer for Hanse Yachts. Furthermore, with a sister product development company (Dutchman) we are familiar with the challenges facing companies in the Marine Industry.

For sailboat installations, flexibility is the key, which is one of the primary reasons we selected an Octopus Drive. The many options seemed overfill at first, but by making a simple mockup of the drive (using an old caulking cartridge and a outer tube) and trying out different installation configurations, we quickly were able to select the best drive, which saved a considerable amount of installation time.

We will be using your drives on all future installations.

Sound Sailing Centre , Hanse Brokerage

Although not exactly plug and play, installing the autopilot was not a difficult job. A bit of research and planning were required. Choosing locations for the components and configuring a strong enough mounting arrangement for the drive unit required the most effort.

The Octopus drive was not only less expensive than the proprietary unit, but more importantly provided utility and convenience with its longer travel and remotely mounted pump.

Seamless integration with our existing instrument system was a major benefit, as the autopilot can now do about everything a human helmsman can do, except keep a lookout.

I heard about Octopus Drives through an internet search. I started to research your unit and was very impressed. The pdf files online were easy to understand and I could picture myself installing your unit. Every dealer talks about how hard it is to install an autopilot system and shame on me for believing them.

The Octopus Type B connection kit was a breeze, I had that installed within 45 minutes, it could not have been easier.

Overall the unit has been great, my wife and I recently fished some difficult seas with 2 ft. waves coming from the north and 4 ft. rollers from the SW left over from the night before. The autopilot kept me on a straight line, better than I could have.

The whole time Kim and I were busy at the back with no worries on getting back to the helm. Your autopilot saved my marriage!

The early days of the company saw Mick working from home on his motorbike, but in the decades since, Octopus Electrical Service has grown into one of the biggest marine electrical companies in Asia. This growth can be credited to a handful of hardworking Thai electrical and electronic  engineers. People who joined the company with enthusiasm and have stayed loyal throughout the many years that followed and have continued to build on their knowledge base and long-term relationships with our clients ever since. With Mick’s broad knowledge of the Marine Electrical Industry, our professional worker base and Paul (our resident service IT Guru) we have built a formidable team with over 80 years of electrical experience.

Currently, Octopus Electrical Service has 13 Employees with five service vehicles that operate out of all the marinas, ship yards and bays on Phuket Island. We have a comprehensive stock list of everything required to carry out electrical repairs, rewires, new equipment installations and general marine electrical work. We additionally work closely with the other professional contractors on the island and have no problem organising a quality stainless steel bracket or made of a new fiberglass to enhance the installation so their client’s vessels maintain a quality appearance.

Are Modern Marine Electronics Making Us Dumber?

  • By Ron Ballanti
  • July 18, 2024

Modern electronics illustration

Albert Einstein once said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.”

I don’t know if old Al ever held a fishing rod, and I doubt he was thinking about live-scanning sonar, autopilots, AIS, GPS navigators or shaded relief charts when he uttered the prophetic words. Still, in a world today where many people can’t navigate by compass, balance a checkbook, perform simple math without a calculator, or even parallel-park their car, it’s a question that deserves asking: Are the modern marine electronics we depend on so much actually making us dumber?

My answer is an unapologetic “that depends.” The technology we have at our disposal today can be a powerful tool. It can also be a debilitating crutch that, when relied on too heavily, can cause our innate angling skills to atrophy over time. I believe the difference comes down to how you use technology—and more importantly, what you do with that “processor” between your ears while you’re at it.

I’m not anti-technology. Far from it. I marvel at the detail in today’s high-res electronic charts, or the way a GPS-enabled trolling motor can hold the boat over a rock the size of a living-room couch. I chart a course in my plotter, drive by autopilot, and use satellite technology to make sure I’m positioned precisely where I want in relation to a reef or a rock pile. If the water temp offshore jumps or falls a half-degree, electronics make sure I don’t miss it. Technology plays a large role in the success of every inshore and offshore fishing trip I do. Still, I’ve been around long enough to remember the time before GPS, electronic charts, satellite weather or LCD fish finders. Was it harder? Yes, it forced us to develop human hunting skills.

Open Your Senses

The more technology does for us, the less we must do for ourselves. This truth, however, doesn’t necessarily lead to a dulling of our mind and senses. Use your mind and senses for things your electronics are not doing. If you’re using your autopilot to troll offshore, you could leave the helm to make a sandwich or hang out with your buddies in the cockpit. Or you could take the opportunity to glass the horizon for kelp paddies, breaking fish, pods of dolphins or diving birds. Or perhaps make some radio calls to other boats to gain some intelligence on the bite. Satellite sea-surface temperature and weather overlaid onto chart plotters can help you decide where to try next—if you exercise your brain.

Today’s advanced chirp sounders can provide a lifelike display of wrecks, ledges and reefs, and even look ahead and out to the sides to “see” under docks or detect hidden structure away from the boat. Instead of using this ability to confirm what you already know, employ it to find new fish-holding structure you never knew about. The same can be said for shaded-relief bathymetric charts, which, in my opinion, are one of the most important developments to come along for anglers over the last decade. These electronic charts make it easy to find and explore new fishing spots, especially small reefs and rock piles that might be ignored by other boats.

Read Next: How to Get the Most Out of Your Electronic Charts

Stupid Is as Stupid Does

Whether or not you believe technology is making us dumber, I guarantee it can make us do stupid things. Just because you’ve plotted a route into your navigation system and the autopilot is steering does not relieve you of your responsibility as the helmsman. You should remain on the bridge and use the freedom technology provides to increase your level of situational awareness. Scan the horizon and monitor for potential obstacles. Monitor your radar display and electronic charts for possible dangers above and below the water. Most importantly, keep your eyes, ears and other senses open and alert. The number of sport-fishing boats that have run aground or collided with other vessels while on autopilot is surprising. The common denominator is that the person in command put too much trust in technology. And what if all your technology fails while on the water, far from sight of land? I’m afraid there are many anglers who would be seriously challenged in bringing their vessels back home safely.

Over the years, I’ve known several “fishy” guys with uncanny abilities to locate fish and predict their behavior. I’ve fished with anglers who can literally smell when gamefish are feeding 60 feet below and accurately predict that three birds sitting on the surface means there’s tuna to be caught. This is something that no amount of technology can ever replace.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

“Purchased my boat at the end of Summer of 2016 Aaron and his team did the install of my electronics (Garmin MFDs), radio, auto pilot, radar and transducer. I just recently had them add a Sirius receiver and antenna. They did a first class job on the installs, and walking me through the equipment. They were on schedule, on budget, and left the boat very clean afterwards. I highly recommend them.”
