Greenline Yachts: The Complete Guide to Greenline Yachts

greenline yachts wikipedia

Green by name, green by nature.

A relatively new entry to the boating industry, Greenline Yachts has revolutionized yachting with a range of innovative and environmentally friendly features. This is boating that does not cost the earth.

The History of Greenline Yachts

Greenline Yachts was launched in 2008. As all great ideas do, they began life on the drawing board. Greenline yachts became a bestseller just one year later, selling more than 550 units of their Greenline 33 in over 28 countries. Its dedicated team of engineers and designers had built a safe, comfortable, and elegant boat.

But it did not stop there. In 2010, just two years after their launch, Greenline’s maiden production, the Greenline 33, became an international bestseller. New boats followed rapidly in 2011, 2013, 2016.

In 2019, the Greenline 48 Coupe premiered in Dusseldorf, Germany, where it amazed onlookers. Since then, the company has grown and continued to innovate, inspire and raise the bar. Who knows what the future holds for this firebrand?

The features of a Greenline Yacht.

Innovation. Innovation. Innovation. Ever since their introduction of the first-ever hybrid boat, which combined diesel and electricity, in 2008, Greenline has revolutionized the boating industry. They have set the bar as a pioneering, forward -thinking, and game-changing boatbuilder. Their vision is to shape the future of boating into environmentally sustainable and, in doing so, establish themselves as the most responsible boat brand in the world.

The designers at Greenline know that their customers want to be at one with the ocean. They want to plunge themselves into the big blue, explore it, conquer it, all without leaving a trace, preserving it for future generations to enjoy too. With their expansive range of hybrid and fully electric boats , this dream is made a reality.

Each model is powered by renewable sources of energy and fitted with solar panels, so it won’t be only the passengers who are soaking up the rays! Greenline yachts use organic boat wash and biodegradable rubbish bags, as well as being built of eco-friendly fabrics, such as PET foam core, grass paper, and recycled materials.

But this is at no sacrifice to speed or performance. Greenline Yachts boasts a range of innovative technological features that will ensure you stay top of the pack. Greenline Yachts are the only range of yachts currently in production that offers H-Drive as well as E-Drive; they have built-in vacuum infusion technology. In contrast to conventional yachts, this means that their boats have optimal weight and robustness, higher quality of material, alongside being kind to the environment.

Low centers of gravity ensure that the utmost levels of safety and comfort are maintained on and below the deck . This comes from Greenline’s technical mastery in placing all the heavy components of the boat in the deepest part of the hull , which renders the vessel more impervious to rolling and increases stability – even in the choppiest of waters!

Of course, all Greenline models are built to a highly sophisticated level. They harness the best of modern technology, especially in tooling and prototyping, and the inherited wisdom of the past in handcrafting to build arguably some of the world’s most advanced boats. Tradition and experience blended seamlessly with the cutting-edge and futuristic.

The Greenline 33

Where it all began.

Measuring in at 32’9″ (9.99m), the Greenline 33 is a splendid yacht containing 1 salon (plus an optional bunk ), 7 berths and 1 bathroom. It has a fuel capacity of 132 gal (500L) and can hold 80 gal of freshwater (300L).

The Greenline 33 has a hybrid and electric drive and conventional diesel options, true to their pioneering spirit. Its Volvo Penta D3 can deliver speeds of up to 11 knots and 170 HP. Their decade of experience in hybrid engines means that this is the ideal system for performance and efficiency while ensuring that your passengers remain comfortable on the deck.

A signature feature of the Greenline 33 is its Aft Galley , which combines the cockpit and galley into a fabulous and inviting social area. There is no single step between the bathing platform and the helmsman position to ensure one level of living throughout the boat.

And with 360-degree panoramic views from the inside, natural light will delight your senses!

The Greenline 39

The big brother of the 33, the Greenline 39 is beefy with a beam of 12’4″ and accommodation for up to six people. Friends, family or business colleagues, you name it, you can bring them. Wishing to lavish your passengers in comfort and grace, the designers at Greenline have fitted the 39 with a bank of solar panels, which you can use for all the boat’s appliances, whether you are at sea or having a drink at the port . Even better, this means that the boat does not make a sound. No noise. No vibrations. No emissions. No disturbances. Nothing. Just you …

And the seagulls.

The 39 has high-performance LiPo Batteries 2 x 13.3 kWh in its hybrid edition, which have a charging rate of 8 kWh/day. Depending on your energy management and the weather conditions, this translates as 2 days on anchor, while using the full range of appliances that a family needs, including laptops, TVs, fridge and stove. Still, the non-hybrid is built with efficiency in mind. It consumes approximately 6.5 kWh/day for 4 people in a 24 hour period.

Looking at the exterior of the yacht, the cockpit and side decks are sheltered to afford your passengers maximum security and protection so that people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the weather. Plus, the Helmstand side door provides safe maneuvering throughout the boat.

The Greenline 40

The family favorite.

Biggest of all, the series provides the perfect venue for you to sit back with your family and enjoy. No work. No-fuss. Just sheer relaxation and comfort. With 2 cabins, a large salon, and a maximum of 6 berths, the Green 40 can cater to families of all shapes and sizes. And with a fuel capacity of 185 gal (700L) and water tank of 106 400L, there is no need to worry about running dry.

The Greenline 40 enjoys all of the Green technologies that makes Greenline so, well, green. It has 4 high performance LiPo batteries that allow the whole family to stay connected and entertained for 3 days on anchor. For those with more restrained usage, this can be more. Nonetheless, available as a diesel, electric or hybrid drive. This is a boat with green credentials.

For when the sun is dipping below the waves and it is time to relax, the Greenline 40 has an adaptive owners cabin , which supports a multiplicity of sleeping arrangements.

The Greenline 45 Coupe

Say hello to the ocean’s solar power plant.

Available as a Diesel Drive, Hybrid Drive or Electric Drive, the Greenline 45 can accommodate up to eight people with 2 or 3 spacious cabins, depending on customisation, and has two bathrooms. One of these cabins – yes, you guessed it, the master cabin – is full beam, meaning it is nearly 5 metres wide. What a treat. Its diesel tank has a large capacity of 396 gal (1,450L) and 159 gal (600) of freshwater, besides plenty of black water for whatever your needs.

Get ready to impress your guests with the homely natural wood table in the salon, and walk-in closet, and walk-in wardrobe for both cabins. Let the fashion shows commence.

But the Greenline 45 Coupe does not stop there. Like the previous models, it has EDrive technology. Built-in partnership with Torqeedo, this revolutionary technology provides silent, emission free propulsion along the waves, and integrated energy manages to run the boat’s domestic supply efficiently and ecologically. This is complemented by SIMRAD Navigation Electronics , complete with an extra-large navigation dashboard for your viewing pleasure.

Enough of the tech stuff. There is also a hydraulic bathing platform which can be raised or lowered to ensure easy, safe access to the waves.

The Greenline 48 Fly

Independence at its finest

On the outside this boat is unmistakable. It will turn heads at the port. Thanks to its smartly designed covered sidewalks, the flybridge on the yacht is extra-large. It is wider than most of the other boats in its class. =

Greenline knows that a holiday should be relaxation par excellence. This is why they have developed extra wide and protected side passages, with side doors that aid speedy jumping on and off the ship, and an extra protective hardtop option that is enriched with additional solar panels. While the traditional side anchor is standard, Green also offers the option for a boat anchor.

Full-sized freezer? Check. Wine cooler? Check. Extra-large owner bed? Check. The convertible salon of the Greenline 48 Fly, with an adjustable table, offers the opportunity to transform the main dining area into extra berths for when your guests want to hit the hay.

Below deck, the Greenline 48 Fly has 2 x Yanmar 8LV320 engines that generate speeds up to 20 knots and have 320 HP each. This will allow you to cruise at the perfect pace. There are 3, optionally 4, cabins and a maximum of 6 berths, 2 in the salon, and another. Besides, there are 3 bathrooms.

Still curious? Watch the renowned yachting critic  Boat Test  try one out.

The Greenline 68 Ocean Class

The extraordinary just got even more extraordinary.

The biggest yacht ever made by Greenline, the 68 Ocean Class is a force to be reckoned with. This yacht demonstrated to the world that the shipyard was knocking its boat, building up a gear. Read the  reviews  here!

If you want luxury, that remains environmentally sound, then look no further than the flagship of the Greenline Yachts family: the 68 Ocean Class.

Taking the open-plan to the next level, the world-class yacht has Greenline’s signature Aft Galley, which combines the cockpit and galley in a magnificent space for socializing. During the daytime, the whole interior of the boat is flooded with natural light due to the 360-degree panoramic windows. And for when the sunsets (or is high in the sky), there is an expansive wine cooler in which you can stow away your favorite bottle – or two.

Alongside providing extra protection to the craft, the 68 Ocean Class has a hardtop on the flybridge, which coincidentally creates an excellent diving platform. Ready to impress your crush? Just make sure that the water is deep enough.

68′ 3″ in length and with a 17′ 11″ beam, this behemoth will dominate any port or harbor. Or, if you fancy getting away from it all, the boat would be the perfect companion for you to visit your favorite coastline. Italy, Miami , or the Bahamas – you decide.

About Greenline Hybrid Yachts

Design and engineering.

All Greenline models were designed by J&J Design Studio. This world’s leading production yacht design studio was founded in 1983 by brothers Jernej and Japec Jakopin and produced over 300 designs for 55 yards from 22 countries giving birth to over 60.000 production sail- and powerboats – winning close to 100 Boat of the Year, Design and Environmental awards.

Greenline-Charging-Sailing-Mode-web

Tooling and Prototyping

Greenline Yachts models are tooled using high-precision 5-axis milling machines and model-shop/tooling technicians with extensive knowhow and experience based on building the tooling for world’s most renowned yards. The very sophisticated tooling used is the base of a very efficient and streamlined production process – arguably one of the most advanced worldwide.

Infusion Technology

Greenline Yachts have adopted the vacuum infusion technology since it’s inception. Compared to traditional hand lay-up there are several benefits such as optimal amount of resin used in the process resulting in optimal weight and stiffness, higher quality of materials used (osmosis proof vinyl ester resin) as well as being environmentally friendlier.

Handcrafted Finish

Tradition and experience means a great deal in boat building. A boat (sailing or power) will always be, at least at decisive stages, a hand made product therefore craftmanship is of great importance. Greenline Yachts are built by one of the most skilled and experienced craftsmen based on centuries of local boatbuilding tradition and over half a century of composite boatbuilding experience.

Advantages of Greenline Yachts

  • Revolutionary super displacement hull which reduces drag, creates less wake and requires less fuel.
  • Featured hybrid system with range of approximate 20 nautical miles on electric drive. Traditional diesel motor supplements this hybrid system.
  • Greenline yachts offers clean electric energy without noise and smoke while enjoying drastically reduced fuel consumption.
  • Greenline yachts is the largest marine hybrid fleet in the world.
  • Solar panels provide full energy to on-board equipment while docked or at anchor.
  • Greenline yachts seaworthiness (class B certified yacht, built to withstand winds up to 34-40 knots and waves of 13-20 ft).
  • Full warranty and certification system as well as top class dealer and hybrid service support..

Extreme Comfort

Maintaining the comfort and convenience both on deck as well as down below at the highest level across the whole Greenline Yachts range is of the most importance to us. The excellence in styling attracts even the most demanding and experienced boaters.

Brightness and panoramic view

Greenline models across the range share some common principles. One of them is natural light and a 360° panoramic view in the salon making living onboard pleasant and comfortable for the whole family.

All the comforts of home

On a Greenline, you will have constant 230 or 120 V AC power onboard to power your home appliances at all times. It is truly home away from home with a normal-size fridge, freezer, microwave, TV, air conditioning and normal sockets for charging your devices are all at your convenience, even when you are not hooked up on shore power at your dock

All in one level

We pride ourselves in having one of the most comfortable and safe range of boats available on the market.

The Greenline concept puts comfort and convenience at the top of our priority list making it easy to move around as there is not a single step to overcome from the bathing platform to the helmsman’s position. Even the Greenline 48 Fly and our flagship Oceanclass 65 only have two steps from the platform to the cockpit level. This is truly unique on a high-volume yacht and ensures a very low center of gravity, which means stability.

Maximum Convenience

The Hybrid hull has evolved from the Greenline signature hull design called Superdisplacement which incorporates some of the properties of a modern sailing boat hull that moves through the water with the least amount of drag and exceeds the theoretical speed of the hull that is defined by the length of the waterline.

Hybrid hull is a natural evolution of the Superdisplacement as it enables cruising at higher speeds while still maintaining optimal consumption and stability at lower cruising speeds. The Hybrid hull allows for smooth and stable cruising at 10, 12, 16, 20, 25 and even 30 knots. This way the owner can choose from the range of engines offered – the power of the engines defines the cruising speed without having to compromise the safety, stability or consumption levels of your Greenline.

The fuel consumption per nautical mile is much lower than that of a comparable displacement hull and as little as one quarter of a semi-displacement, twin engine planing boat.

This revolutionary hull efficiently covers the speed range from zero to over double displacement speed – up to 18 knots in case of a 10 meter waterline and up to 25 knots in case of a 12 meter waterline.

With twin stabilisers on the Greenline 33 and 40, it has unmatched anti-roll and tracking stability. It offers a comfortable and safe ride in all weather conditions, faced by a head-on, side or following sea.

Greenline’s New Eco-Friendly Cruiser

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: October 26, 2021

Greenline 58 Fly

The Greenline 58 Fly is the newest addition to Greenline Yachts’ fleet. At nearly 60 feet length overall, the 58 Fly is the Slovenia-based builder’s second-largest model. Marco Casali of Too Design handled the 58 Fly’s exteriors.

Power for the 58 Fly is either twin 610 hp or 715 hp Cummins diesels with hybrid drive. Twin 1,000 hp Caterpillar diesels are also available and reportedly produce a 30-knot top hop. Eleven solar panels atop the 58 Fly’s flybridge and hardtop produce 3.6 kW of power, and Greenline says, at full charge, the 58 Fly has a range of 30 nautical miles at 6 knots.

A hydraulic swim platform with an 1,100-pound lift capacity provides water access. Forward of the swim platform and up a small set of stairs, there’s a pair of benches for four on centerline. Additionally, four director’s chairs can fit here at the extendable hi-low table, accommodating a total of eight guests to dine. An aft-galley layout makes serving guests inside and outside easy.

Greenline 58 Fly

When not being used for dining, the hi-low table converts to a daybed with fill-in cushions. The comfort accommodations extend forward, as there’s also a foredeck sun pad for three guests. Forward of the sun pad is a forward-facing bench that’s opposite two aft-facing seats. Atop on the flybridge, there’s a centrally located standing helm station flanked by benches on either side that accommodates four guests.

Belowdecks is a three-stateroom, two-head layout. The full-beam, amidships master, with 6-foot-5-inch headroom, and the forepeak, double-berth VIP each have walk-in closets, and a twin guest stateroom is abaft and to starboard. The VIP’s walk-in closet can be removed to have a third head, and the starboard-side guest stateroom can be replaced by a dedicated study. Within the study, there are built-in monitors, HDMI and USB ports, space for a printer and a sofa that converts to a single berth. A crew’s cabin aft has a single berth or two bunk beds, but it can also be used for stowage or as a workshop.

The Greenline 58 Fly is expected to launch in fall 2022.

New Greenline 40 Hybrid: A Cruiser’s Boat

' src=

The new Greenline 40 Hybrid is a cruiser’s boat. It’s user-friendly, easily handled by two people, but not too big to be overwhelming. And it has a state-of-the-art hybrid power system, delivering 22-knot speeds under twin Volvo diesel power, while also providing silent running at 11 knots under solar-electric power.

The two staterooms and one head make it large enough to hold a family, or another couple, on an extended cruise, and its bridge clearance of just 12’ 2 inches are meant to slide under those structures on the Great Loop or the Intracoastal Waterway in the Southeast.

Greenline started making electric-powered boats back in 2008; it was a pioneer in what is now a rapidly growing field. The Slovenian builder now has a fleet ranging from 33 to 68 feet. The 40 Hybrid is on display at the Miami show.

greenline yachts wikipedia

The 40 has an array of solar panels on the coachroof. You can see how the hybrid system works in the video below. But the solar array and batteries essentially make the 40 a mobile power station, providing a constant supply of AC power on board.

The boat has twin 50kW electric motors producing the 11-knot top speed under electric power alone. The boat is quiet at that speed; the only noise is a slight hum. Under electric power it has a range of 30 nm, enough to explore one anchorage and move on to the next one; an optional extender increases that to 75 nm at 5 knots.

The Greenline 40 Hybrid is an efficient boat, with a light, semi-displacement hull designed to produce less drag and easy boat handling in various sea conditions. It comes with a standard bow thruster to help with docking.

Below, the two beds in the master stateroom in the bow can be pushed together, while there are two separate beds in the guest stateroom a bit aft on the port side.

Specs.: LOA: 39’4”; Beam: 13’1”; Draft: 2’9”; Disp.: 17,640 lbs.; Fuel: 185 gals.; Water: 105 gals.; Power: 2×220-hp Volvo D3s. Read more at   https://greenlinehybridnw.com/greenline-yachts-for-sale/greenline-40-hybrid-yacht/   and see the video below:

Greenline 58 FLY

GREENLINE 58 FLY, the new flagship on test

Minimal Logo

GREENLINE 58 FLY , the new flagship of GREENLINE YACHT, debuted at the Cannes and Genoa boat shows finding a lot of interest and great appreciation from the public.

A true floating villa that encompasses all the elegance and warmth of a boat that immediately appeals; in fact, as you enter you immediately feel “at home.” The sturdiness of the materials and fine finishes complement the great work of technology that the shipyard continues to develop for sustainability and reduction of environmental impact.

The GREENLINE 58 FLY is offered with three engine options: Hybrid, Diesel, and Electric. Currently the yard still offers diesel engines, but the effort is to use the most efficient solutions of the market for more responsible yachting.

top view

GREENLINE 58 FLY EXTERIOR

Hydraulic stern platform with ample space provided with integrated bathing ladder and tender slips.

The stern features a small sofa, very useful and functional for those who want to enjoy the view after taking a dive. Lifting the sofa with a convenient handle, we find a huge locker useful for storing everything needed for any diving, fishing , sup or any other necessary equipment as the space is really big.

Climbing aboard from the gangway, the aft cockpti features two large seats with a central table that can accommodate 8 people very comfortably; thanks to the glass placed aft, it allows to have a truly unique sea terrace with a magnificent view.

On the two outer sides we find well-dimensioned steel fairleads with retractable HARKEN electric winches that allow easy mooring; the two lockers cut out to the side are useful for stowing the stern lines. From the cockpit we can move to the bow via the side-deck; in addition to being of significant size, it is protected by the superstructure that runs almost the entire length of the boat.

GREENLINE-58-FLY-Exterior

Amidships we find the mooring bollard for any springs or crossbars to reinforce moorings on high wind days. In the bow the space is immense and there are two armchairs separating the mooring area, also equipped here with two large fairleads, mooring bollards and anchor windlasses, all well organized and tidy.

The sundeck, thanks to the three very large cushions, is certainly a much sought-after relaxation area; with the two Pop up lights, placed at either end, it becomes the ideal place in the evening to sip a drink with friends. A bimini with a fold-down structure offers good protection during the hottest hours.

Large openings have been carved into the two bow railings, providing light for the forward cabin through windows located on either side of the walkway.

GREEENLINE 58 FLYBRIDGE

Stepping onto the Fly you realize how much extra space this new model offers; significant T TOP height and excellent sofa arrangement make it ergonomic and the quality of the finish is always top notch for a yard like GREENLINE YACHTS. The steering console offers excellent visibility and allows you to have the whole boat under control.

An interesting feature on the fly is the presence of two tables, a larger one, comfortable for eight people, and a smaller one located on the other side, which can be used as a table for children or as a work table. The stern accommodates a large kitchen cabinet with stove, sink, ice maker and refrigerator that leaves space for the balcony where we can accommodate sun loungers or additional chairs for guests.

GREENLINE 58 FLY INTERIOR

As we enter the GREENLINE 58 FLY we are left open-mouthed by the finishes and materials used that make welcoming a boat that already won me over on the outside. Large windows, room solutions and furniture placement, lighting and upholstery make the environment really pleasant; it may be the sunny day, but the interior is flooded with a huge amount of natural light.

The large window at the side of the front door opens like a compass, and an overhead tilting top becomes a cocktail table for the outdoors or for easily passing food when eating outdoors.

GL58_Main-salon.jpg

Entering, an L-shaped galley arranged on the port broadside with a large countertop, equipped with induction hobs and an oven, allows room for those who want to indulge in more sophisticated dishes.

Opposite on the starboard broadside,a large column refrigerator/frizer with a very large capacity allows for the storage of many foods and beverages for long cruises. In the lower cabinets we also find a dishwashers and a wine cooler.

A really interesting peculiarity of this GREENLINE 58 FLY is a central opening positioned on the dunnage, just in front of the refrigerator; in fact, by lifting a portion of the dunnage you have access, via a ladder, to a large area where you can really stow a lot of things.

In the deck saloon we find an L-shaped sofa on the port side with a central solid wood table and another opposite sofa on the starboard side, behind it is a hideaway TV set.

In the bow, the steering console is very spacious and the side door allows easy access to the outside walkway, proving very valuable when mooring.

Visibility is excellent, the bridge has two large screens that, placed vertically, give us all the information related to our boat. GREENLINE 58 FLY is really a boat with attention to every detail and quality shines through in every part.

Going down the central stairs we find a twin-bedded cabin on our starboard side, a very generous master cabin aft and a VIP cabin forward also very spacious. Each cabin is served by its own bathroom with separate shower.

GREENLINE 58 FLY SEA TRIAL

The cool day and the little rough sea allows us to go out with the sun warming us and with an incredible desire to take a long cruise on this boat that conveys so much confidence and travel desire. Yes because on the GREENLINE 58 FLY what you feel when you leave the harbor is a great freedom, the boat goes smoothly even at low revs, the hull is stable and on the FLY we can admire all the splendor of the sea all around.

This model is powered by two Cummins 715HP engines and as soon as we get out we give a little gas, our speed is 6 knots with 600 engine revolutions and a consumption of just 4.7 l/h per engine; already at this speed we could travel in absolute relaxation and enjoy the day.

I reach the cruising speed and feel the hull getting up to plane; with 2000 rpm we are at 18 knots and the boat is in perfect trim, the sea ahead continues to invite us to a long navigation of the rest, at this speed from Genoa to Corsica would be 4 hours of pleasant crossing.

I speed up to the maximum to feel how the boat reacts and I read on the instruments 2400 engine revolutions with a speed of 25 knots which is the one indicated by the yard as max speed. The consumption is 143 l/h per engine.

The hull is not stressed by the breakers and opens the water in the bow thanks to its hydrodynamic lines that allow the boat to enter the wave smoothly.

The turns, which I make to assess the maneuverability, give me the feeling of control and stability, without much effort I take the boat to the limit of its turn and, although I make more than one quick turn, the hull allows me to always have the boat under control.

The GREENLINE 58 FLY with its 18.2 meters in length and an unladen displacement of 30 tn, responds to the commands with immediacy and promptness, almost not noticing its volumes that are really big.

A boat that can give a lot of satisfaction in every respect, comfortable, spacious, easy to steer and very silent.

We return to the port of Genoa and with a couple of maneuvers we are moored, I reluctantly get off this boat, a week’s vacation would have been great on this GREENLINE 58 FLY.

GREENLINE 40

The greenline 40 redefines boating with a new level of well-being at sea., eco-friendly hybrid boat with all the comforts of home..

The Greenline 40 is a boat for those who want to cruise in peace and serenity, without compromising on the livability and comforts of a top range boat.

Genuinely one of the most silent boats on the market today, w ith nothing more than a whisper-like hum at cruising speed, both when using electric or diesel power, the Greenline 40 never disturbs your comfort while underway or when recharging the batteries.

The adaptive owners’ cabin offers beds that can be moved to create single or double berths, in standard sizes which is highly practical when buying or replacing linen. This is just one of the many features of Greenline Yachts that make them a leader in enhancing the environmental sustainability of the boating industry. Natural light and panoramic views from the salon and in the owners’ cabin ensure you are always connected with the outside world, and also reduce the reliance on electric lighting in daylight hours.

The boat is also highly practical, with  a remote-controlled, electrically opening and closing platform enlarging the lounge/cockpit area by 4㎡. Plus twin cockpit storage lockers offer all the space needed for your equipment and toys.

The Greenline 40 is the boat for extended cruising that you have been waiting for.

Does Hybrid Work? Greenline Hybrid Owner Testimonial

“The hybrid system worked well. The solar panel set up is huge and catered for everything we needed and for the 7 years we owned the boat we never felt the need for a generator. We always appreciated the backup from Eyachts and we have purchased other boats from them since then and experienced the same support.” – Jon Fleming, Greenline 40 Owner.

Greenline 39 Hybrid review

The Greenline 39 Hybrid represents a fresh start for the Slovenian yard, we put it to the test - hybrid system and all - in the Solent

We’re cruising up the Beaulieu River on a 39ft, 220hp diesel cruiser and it’s totally silent. Okay, there’s the faint whir of an electric motor and the sound of the water rushing off the hull is a tad intrusive but, that aside, we are pottering along at 5 knots in near total quiet. Welcome to the Greenline 39 Hybrid .

Greenline and hybrid is a combination we have seen before but it’s no secret that the first generation of diesel/electric drives using the VW motor had its fair share of teething issues.

The new system is a collaboration between Volvo Penta and Siemens, which combines a single D3 220hp diesel engine with an inline 10kW electric motor. It worked seamlessly on test via the switch on the dash, simply flick between diesel or electric drive and use the Volvo throttles to control power using either drive system.

Greenline 36 Hybrid

The 39 will do 5 knots on electric power alone

The truth is, the range is only around 20nm at 4 knots and even less if you slip along at full power, which doesn’t seem particularly useful on the face of it. However, in somewhere like the Solent, being able to blast across it at 18 knots and then switch into electric mode on one of the many rivers that feed it is a real treat. It was so still on our test day that it was even manageable to berth on electric drive, though the bow and sternthruster somewhat shattered the illusion.

If you’re not into the hybrid vibe then there is a 370hp Yanmar diesel option, though keep in mind that as part of the £30,000 you pay for the hybrid  you effectively get a 7kW generator as part of the package.

The saloon and galley merge into one big living space

What is the rest of the boat like? The deck layout is familiar Greenline with a drop-down transom (now activated via remote control) that becomes the bathing platform, a totally flat threshold between cockpit and saloon and a top-hinged window that opens the aft galley up to the outside space. It works well and the huge windows and standard electric skylights teamed with light oak wood make for a saloon that feels spacious and bright.

The decks are asymmetric so the starboard deck is deep, wide and served by a side door at the helm that makes hopping out onto the decks to help with lines a simple job for the skipper. The door, and aforementioned roof hatches, make ventilating the saloon easy despite the amount of glazing in the superstructure.

Greenline 36 Hybrid

Scissor-action berths in the forward cabin

Below decks the master cabin is forward with a rather cramped twin guest cabin amidships, reaching back beneath the saloon. The master, though, is a great cabin that uses the usual Greenline trick of dotting windows around the coachroof to improve the view out and the amount of natural light coming in. Both share a well proportioned heads with a separate shower cubicle and the master benefits from its own ensuite access.

Greenline 36 Hybrid

The side door is a useful addition at the helm

The hybrid technology plays a small part in the overall appeal of the 39. The long-term reliability of the system is yet to be established but if the claims ring true the electric motor adds something to the overall package that many rivals can’t. That aside, though, the 39 is a fine year-round cruiser with a dependable hull and useful turn of speed. It’s not the last word in quality but it’s fuss-free, practical and it works.

  • Silent cruising
  • Decent performance on the diesel
  • Practical deck layout
  • More interesting styling than previous models
  • Improved hybrid system
  • Hybrid system is expensive
  • Guest cabin feels cramped

If you can appreciate the hybrid system as more of a silent cruising aid over anything to do with fuel efficiency then there are some real benefits to enjoy. The boat itself retains Greenline's sensible attitude to boat design and is a practical, year-round cruiser
