Yacht building: How Hanjo Runde wants to make Hanseyachts even more successful

The new captain of Germany's largest series boatyard has been quiet for a long time. Hanjo Runde, previously responsible for the kitchen manufacturer Siematic, has been at the helm of the Greifswald-based company since 1 October. Now the new Hanseyachts CEO has spoken to YACHT for the first time about his goals and strategies.

The interview in the Hamburg editorial office lasted a total of two hours. It will be published in full in YACHT 7/2022 (available to subscribers from 18 March and at newsagents from 23 March). In it, the sales expert and experienced industry manager provides insights into the process that will shape and change the shipyard from now on.

The reason why Runde did not go public sooner is that he first conducted a comprehensive review of the current situation and wanted to develop a new mission statement for the company and its 2,000 employees. Implementation is now beginning, which should make Hanseyachts even more efficient, improve the quality of its products and increase turnover by well over 50 per cent in the medium term - from 120 to 200 million euros.

With a current order volume of just under 315 million euros, the sales target does not appear to be too far away. However, there are also challenges for the new management team, which includes Runde and another newcomer, Stefan Zimmermann.

Read extracts from the exclusive interview here:

Mr Runde, you have been managing the world's second-largest shipyard in terms of unit sales for six months now. What was your first impression of the company and its employees?

Hanseyachts grew up thanks to Michael Schmidt. You can still feel the influence of the founder. Everyone is very entrepreneurial and pragmatic. The people working here are extremely honest, friendly and open. There is very little politics in the company and a lot of passion, from the production line to the management. I spent my first eight years at Airbus. When I first came into the hangars and looked at the hulls, I thought: now you're back home!

What do you see as your most important task?

The most important thing is to shape the corporate culture. We will only be successful if our corporate culture is strong. This then leads to high quality and sustainable, profitable growth.

So not everything was in order in Greifswald?

Our culture is based on constructive cooperation and great openness - just like a crew on board. That's a great starting point. When you join a company for the first time, you naturally see where you want to go. And you are always a little way away from this target image. For me, it's important to prioritise performance as a team and always try to get close to this ideal. This starts with the topic of people-orientation, because creating value begins with appreciation. One of the biggest tasks in management is to win people over.

That sounds abstract. Do you reach the entire workforce with it?

I believe that everyone is happy when others are interested in them. Being seen also determines how we perceive ourselves. We have organised workshops at all our locations with every single employee. This resulted in a lot of recognition and also a constructive exchange on potential for improvement. If I want to ensure the highest quality, then the employees have to love their product. It has to be clear to everyone: We don't build boats, we fulfil the dreams of our customers. For a family man who wants to go on a cruise with his family, it doesn't matter whether I set the screw too hard or too loose, especially in safety-relevant areas.

Hanseyachts is broadly positioned: Sailing yachts, catamarans and motorboats. Will it stay that way?

We have very well-established, internationally recognised model lines. A multi-brand strategy makes sense from many perspectives, as does a broad range. Let me put it this way: the core of our strategy is innovation. The success of Hanseyachts AG will depend on how quickly we can drive innovation in the individual segments. We will continue to invest here. Should the market cool down, this will become even more important. Incidentally, this is also a kind of risk management for us.

Do you still see potential for other brands?

There are some exciting things that can be done, segments that are growing strongly, where we are not yet. But before you ask what exactly, I don't want to tell you yet.

Should Hanse move more into the premium segment in terms of quality?

I think we already are. The Hanse 460 sets standards, you can already see the new face of the brand. It is not without reason that it is Europe's yacht of the year in its class.

Can this also be transferred to smaller models?

We will not make the mistake of compromising on the following models, especially not on the smaller ones.

How important is the sailing sector for Hanseyachts?

Sailing boats are our core business, we have grown up with them. We are currently number two worldwide in terms of unit sales. A long way behind the number one, but we want to shorten the gap.

How much more rational do you want to and can you become?

The yacht industry is still quite young compared to the automotive and aviation industries. There is certainly still a lot to optimise. But if I start thinking too much in terms of identical parts and looking too much for savings, that would be wrong. We are focussing on innovation.

We have talked a lot about opportunities. What challenges do you see?

From a dealer's point of view, it is the lack of berths. This is already making itself felt and could slow down growth somewhat. As a shipyard, we are currently being challenged by the disrupted supply chains, but also by the search for qualified employees. From a social perspective, the issue of sustainability will certainly keep us busy. Our approach is called: Green Factory, a more climate-neutral production. We want to optimise our sites; we have already started in Greifswald.

It was rumoured before you took over that you were to prepare the sale of the shipyard. Is that true?

I am here to develop Hanse further, and this has also been discussed with our main owner Aurelius. Our goal is a turnover of 200 million euros. That's not going to happen just like that. I would be the wrong person to optimise earnings in the short term.

Then you have come to stay?

Yes, of course! You see: I was at Airbus for eight years, I was at Hilti for over ten years. Hanse is an absolute dream job.

The Berret-Racoupeau-designed Hanse 460 turned heads as a 2022 Boat of the Year nominee with a fresh take on comfort and volume but with an eye better sailing performance. The second model in the new range designed by the Berret-Racoupeau team, the Hanse 510 is set to make its US premiere at the 2023 Annapolis Sailboat Show—again as a Boat of the Year contender. From what our editors saw at the model’s recent showing in Cannes, the 510 is expected to be a formidable opponent in its category during CW ’s Boat of the Year judging.

As for dockside demeanor, this new range’s calling card appears to be a marked chine on the bow and an inverted bow to optimize sailing performance. According to the designers, attention was also paid to refining the hull shape to maximize interior space. The result is an easy-on-the-eyes 51-footer that values smooth sailing and fast, comfortable cruising.

According to the builder, the Hanse 510 offers unrivalled volume in the 50-foot class, courtesy of an optimized hull design. Chines at the bow and aft further allow for a slim waterline, ensuring prime performance and easy sailing.

The 510 is equipped with a large, practical dinghy garage, capable of holding an inflated dinghy of up to 8.8 feet; and the optional, newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System makes launching that dinghy as simple as “driving a car out of the garage.” Convenience and style dominate the interior. Even the crew cabin gets in on the volume action, as it’s much more than the typical (read: small) crew sleeping space—it is a room worthy of staying a while. The options list is lengthy, and the boat can be highly customized to meet owners’ needs.

“Expectations were high after the outstandingly successful Hanse 460, which has been awarded European Yacht of the Year,” says Hanjo Runde, CEO of HanseYachts. “The new Hanse 510 is the logical and consistent further development of the new concept. With her impressive volume, tremendously dynamic lines and countless options, she is redefining the 50-foot class. It is an easy to sail and enormously spacious private retreat.”

The key talking points of the 510 are numerous. A hydrodynamic design with a slender waterline promotes better hull speed. Chines fore and aft allow for a wider hull and more interior space. The reverse, wave-piercing bow makes the yacht pitch less in strong winds, while the pronounced bow chines keep the foredeck as dry as possible. On deck, the strategically placed helm position promotes total control of the Hanse 510 in any situation, with all navigation and performance information easily accessible, as well as all lines and even the electric winches on the port side. An optional hardtop shades the entire cockpit including the steering positions, and it blends seamlessly with the boat’s silhouette. It is also available in several colors and accommodates special lighting and solar panels. A fixed windscreen is another option.

The novel dinghy garage is capable of holding a dinghy of up to 8.8 ft without having to deflate it. Combined with the optional automatic comfort stairs and the newly developed Hanse Smart Tender System, a single crew member can safely and comfortably deploy the dinghy, including engine, in minutes.

Another novelty on the Hanse 510 is the easy-to-open life raft storage space in the cockpit. Situated just in front of the companionway, it’s easily accessible and has space for standard 8-person life raft containers. An optional wet bar with grill and sink is hinged at the stern so as not to absorb precious cockpit space.

The boat comes rigged with a self-tacking jib, and all lines run back to the cockpit for simple sail handling of the 710 sq. ft. mainsail and various headsails. The jib is 570 sq. ft. and the reacher measures 1,011 sq. ft., set up using a Solent-style rig on the custom bowsprit. Air draft of the deck-stepped mast is just over 77 feet above the waterline. Optional electric furling systems and winches make light work of handling halyards and sheets for the optimum in performance, short-handed sailing. The standard boat comes with a single, 80 hp saildrive, although an upgraded, optional 110 hp diesel is also available.

Within the interior, 14 well positioned opening hatches and eight opening windows and portholes permit maximum light and ventilation below deck. A long list of layout options are said to be available for the interior arrangement, from an “owner’s yacht” with a best-in-class sized master cabin, to a “charter yacht” with 10 berths, three bathrooms and an additional skipper cabin. The galley can be fully adapted to the owner’s needs as well: In addition to various refrigerator and freezer options, there is room for a wine cooler, dishwasher and a three-burner gas cooker plus an oven in the longitudinal pantry, which can be customized with a vast choice of colors and materials. Another option is a fully equipped navigation area with a forward-facing seat and a large salon table. The extensive options list, ranging from a washing machine in the utility room to flatscreens in the master cabin and salon, is crowned by the Flagship Package, which includes highest-end fabrics and materials, not to mention a “hidden” bar behind the folding backrest in the salon.

At its core, the Hanse 510 emphasizes a roomy cockpit, large but manageable sail plan, and overall performance that is easily managed by a couple, but perhaps what really sets the Hanse 510 apart from other sailboats in its class is the limitless level of customization the builder is willing to offer. The Hanse 510 also comes with a CE rating of A-12, so it is well suited for those who want to venture longer distances.

Hanse Yachts: the head of the German yachting group takes the helm

Hanse factory

The Hanse Group has announced the imminent departure of its CEO Jens Gerhardt and the arrival of his successor on January 10, 2022. This managerial change comes at a time when the German manufacturer has just launched a new range of motorboats.

Jens Gerhardt leaves Hanse Yachts

Hanse Yachts Group, Germany's leading yacht builder, has announced the departure of its managing director Jens Gerhardt as of February 1, 2022. He has been at the helm of the sail and powerboat shipyard since November 2011 and will have led the company for 10 years. He will remain in an advisory capacity to the management.

"Dr. Gerhardt has played a decisive role in defining Hanse Yachts over the past 10 years. I would like to thank him for his outstanding and lasting service, especially in product development. We are pleased that he will continue to support us and provide us with his expertise, especially in the area of development", says Hanjo Runde, Chairman of the Board.

Jens Gerhardt quitte la direction de Hanse

An operational manager from the industry

Stefan Zimmermann replaces Jens Gerhardt as operational director of Hanse Yachts on January 10, 2022. An industrial engineer, he is also an avid yachtsman. He has held responsible positions in the industry for the past 25 years, in the automotive industry at Ford, as well as in the motorization and wind power market at Senvion, a composite industry with links to boating.

At the same time, a new Head of Finance and Human Resources was appointed. This is Sven Göbel.

Hanse wants to continue its growth

The change in management comes as the German builder has launched the new Ryck Yachts powerboat brand in 2021, in addition to its Fjord and Sealine launches and its Hanse, Dehler, Moody and Privilege sailing yachts. While the order book is well oriented, industrial issues are therefore at the heart of the concerns.

Divnogorye: A BEAUTIFUL monastery built into limestone rocks (PHOTOS)

hanse yacht hanjo runde

This place literally concealed itself among fields and low mountains, 650 kilometers to the south of Moscow and 150 kilometers to the south of Voronezh. Tourists often visit it in the summer, taking a detour from a high-speed track leading to the sea.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

Witnessing it, any traveler immediately understands why it’s called ‘Divnogorye’, literally “divnye gory” (“miraculous mountains”). Locals just call it ‘Divy’.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

Divnogorye is famous for its snow-white limestone outcrops and buttes, standing among the Central Russian green landscape. They are located on the bank of the Tikhaya Sosna River, very close to its confluence with the Don River. So, it has both a hilly terrain and a picturesque river valley.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

One of the first written references of this place goes back to the end of the 14 century – a monk from the entourage of Pimen, Metropolitan of Moscow, wrote down that he had seen white stone pillars that “divno” (“marvelously, miraculously”) and “krasno” (“beautifully”) stood on the bank of the Tikhaya Sosna River.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

The monastery settled among this beauty of nature. A local legend says that, back in the 12 century, hieromonks and pilgrims Xenophon and Joasaph from Sicily came looking for a refuge in the Russian lands and they arrived there, bringing the miraculous Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God with them. Allegedly, during their lifetime, the first cave church appeared inside of a limestone rock formation.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

It’s known for certain that the monastery here was founded in 1653. It suffered many raids by Crimean Tatars, since it stands right on the way from Rus’ to the Crimean Khanate. Because of this, the monastery was even protected by a wooden wall, which didn’t survive to the present day.

In the same 17th century, the first cave church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was carved into a limestone rock outcrop.

Church of St. John the Baptist

Church of St. John the Baptist

From the times of Peter the Great, many people who traveled south to the Sea of Azov stayed there for the night. Those white pyramid stones left an incredible impression on all those travelers.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

In 1699, the monastery was visited by Peter the Great himself and he even had a fish lunch there, caught by the monks in the nearby river. Under Catherine the Great, the monastery lost its lands and means of subsistence and was closed down.

Church of the Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God

Church of the Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God

It was only reopened in the 19th century. It became quite a flourishing spiritual center of the Russian South. Legend says that, during a cholera epidemic, the miraculous Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God was found not far away from the monastery (it seems that this is how the legend of the Sicilian monks emerged). The altar of the second cave church was then consecrated in its honor.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

The monks carved out not just a church in limestone rocks, but also a whole cave world – halls, corridors, staircases, monastic cells, even a second floor with a dining hall.

hanse yacht hanjo runde

However, the Divnogorye monastery also has a “regular” cathedral called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Divnogorye monastery

During Soviet times, the cave churches fell into desolation and, only in the 1990s, were they restored again. Today, services are conducted there in summertime.

The major city of Voronezh, with a population of over one million, was originally founded to protect Russia’s southern borders. By the end of the 17th Century Peter the Great had made the city the centre of Russian shipbuilding and the flagship Goto Predestinatsia was built here, which has now become one of the symbols of the city. During the Second World War much of the city was destroyed, meaning the city’s architecture is now predominantly Soviet. The city is also the unofficial capital of Russia's Black Earth Region.

Voronezh stations are designed to detect and track ballistic and cruise missiles and other aerodynamic objects.

On the Internet and in print, you can find the wrong name for these stations - over-the-horizon or over-the-horizon radar.

Early warning early warning radar "Voronezh"

Since December 1 of last year, they have become part of the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces.

The main feature of the Voronezh radar station is its high factory readiness.

The first to develop and put into operation a meter-range radar station "Voronezh-M". The next development was the Voronezh-DM radar. The third radar data model is Voronezh-VP.

The first steps towards the creation of radar stations with VZG were taken in 1986 during the creation of the radar station DO "Selenga".

VZG provides installation period for these radar stations no more than 18-24 months.

The stations consist of 23 units of sets of equipment.

Image

Voronezh uses hardware and design solutions that allow assembling a system from a set of ready-made factory assemblies with characteristics that meet the operational and tactical requirements of the installation site. All issues of energy resource management are solved programmatically and technologically. Built-in control and high-tech control system reduce maintenance costs.

Service personnel are accommodated in standardized containers that have a system for ensuring temperature characteristics.

The designers have worked out the range of cabinets - "Voronezh" has 12 types of cabinets, of which the cabinets with transmitting and receiving equipment and the AFD control system are serial. There are 22 non-serial cabinets on the radar station of the Voronezh subsidiary, they were placed in 3 containers, in which the equipment for monitoring temperature characteristics is also installed.

Receiving and transmitting equipment in the "Voronezh" radar station is located in the large antenna complexes of the VZG. They are ready for transport and assembly units.

The installation of these complexes takes place on fast assembly support structures. This leads to the rapid construction of an active antenna pattern. This block-complex assembly reduces losses in the transmission and reception paths, reduces the temperature and, in general, gives a high indicator of the efficiency of the antenna device. In addition, this layout allows for upgrades. Emitters are located at the end of each container.

The radar antenna DO SPRN "Voronezh" uses a method of creating subarrays for reception, which reduces the amount of equipment used without lowering the characteristics of the antenna pattern. The method is implemented on the mutual overlap of sublattices and the use of special amplitude distributions in them.

The stages of the transistor design of the transmitting amplifiers in the AFD interact in a "hot collector" manner. This allows the transmitting equipment to be cooled with "outboard" air coming through the ventilation equipment, which is part of the technical equipment. This "live" ventilation made it possible to abandon the overall thermal stabilization and cooling systems.

The hot air cooling circuit is distributed to all antenna boxes using an integrated air duct system.

The temperature indicators on the end switches of the air ducts of the installed modules are on average no more than 45 degrees. At low temperatures, in winter, the circuit is closed, and warm air is used to heat the antenna boxes. Warm air in the circuit is diluted with cold outside air to maintain a certain temperature.

The equipment of the receiving channels has not only digitization of signals, but also built-in processors for initial digital processing and verification control of the receiving paths. This approach saves computing facilities "Voronezh" and channels for transmitting information, and reduces the loss of processed signals, using digital methods to stabilize the non-identity of the used phased array channels.

Digital signal processing occurs at the carrier output frequency with the following allocation of quadrature elements, which made it possible to qualitatively reduce the loss of processed information.

Computing equipment used for primary and secondary processing is made on a "server" computer with an open architecture of information processing in real time. The computer is unified for all types of promising topics. It has two types of processor cells and 2 buses: the VME bus and the user bus. Constructive computer box - "Euromechanics". The performance of the solution is up to one hundred billion operations per second. The computer has unlimited possibilities for upgrading and expanding. The occupied area is half of a standard cabinet for Voronezh equipment. Consumes 1.5 kW / h. Service is not provided. Guaranteed operating time 80 thousand hours.

Functional and technical control is performed as peripheral coprocessors, which are built into technical equipment, combined with a central coprocessor by a high-speed interface. This made it possible to reduce the volumetric dimensions of the equipment, increase the reliability of the information flow and functional control.

The Voronezh radar station uses programmed regulation of the potential in the sector of responsibility for range, angles and time, the mode of saving consumed resources.

Software adjustment with these modes makes it possible to quickly change the power consumption of the radar station in normal, combat and readiness for combat use modes, to equalize the energy consumption in the working sector of the radar station.

During the installation of the head radar of the DO SPRN "Voronezh-DM" near the city of Armavir, for its power supply, a power line with a total length of more than eight kilometers was extended, communications and roads were built.

At the installation site of the radar, a checkpoint was set up, a BVM, facilities for water intake, an electrical substation, a fire station, and an underground shelter were installed. The premises have been modernly decorated. For the personnel of the radar, they created quite comfortable conditions for living and performing combat missions. For recreation and physical training, there is a training tower, a volleyball court and a hundred-meter course for training fire station personnel. The entire area is lit and fenced around the perimeter. Seedlings of trees and shrubs have been planted.

Since the start of construction, mid-2006, a set of works has been carried out on 58 units of construction projects. Completion of construction - 2009. Contractor - USS No. 7 Spetsstroy RF.
