First look: WING 100 – one of the world’s largest megayachts

Royal Huisman reveal 100m megayacht. The radical Wing 100 concept is designed to be a true sailing yacht, not 'sail assisted'

A dream team of superyacht heavyweights have collaborated to produce this ambitious future-proofed megayacht sailing concept, one which, if built, would rank in the top five largest sailing yachts in the world.

The famed Dutch yard Royal Huisman worked with big rig specialists Dykstra Naval Architects and British interior designer Mark Whitely to visualise this extraordinary 100m/330ft craft.  

Were it to be commissioned, it would be built in aluminium and is designed to be a true sailing yacht rather than a motoryacht with sails (such as Sailing Yacht A , the world’s largest at 142m). It’s also one that the design team predict can be easily handled thanks in part to its innovative airfoil wingmasts.

The relative simplicity of the push-button controlled sailing systems is also a factor which should help the project appeal to motorboaters wanting to reduce their environmental impact, thinks Royal Huisman.

It predicts that the efficiency of the rig means that WING 100 will consume less than 20% of the energy required by an equivalent motoryacht on passage, which equates to over 225,000lt of fuel per year.

The twin 73m free standing, rotating  wing masts would be built by Royal Huisman’s sister company Rondal. These have airfoil profiles, can be remotely adjusted to help increase or decrease power, and help to minimise deck clutter.

The wing masts prioritise the ability to set sails quickly, easily and comfortably and incorporate 480m 2 of solar panels that can generate 250kW a day. The experience of Dykstra will be invaluable in the rig development thanks to its work with the ground-breaking and well proven DynaRig projects Maltese Falcon and Black Pearl .  

The Vollenhove yard is one of the only few capable of such a formidable project, having previously launched Athena (90m) and Sea Eagle II (81m) and with the 85m Project 410 currently in build.

“The emergence of sailing yachts on this scale, with the level of energy efficiency and eco-responsibility offered by WING 100, would have been unthinkable just a decade ago”, states Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman.

Top 100: Largest Superyacht Launches of 2021

An eco-concious development, a family-friendly giant and two enormous explorer yachts, 2021 had it all in the yachting world. With a range of phenomenal releases, we look back at some of the largest superyacht launches the year had to offer...

 #76: VIVA Known for her advanced hybrid propulsion system, Feadship wowed yacht enthusiasts with the launch of its ecologically-minded superyacht in February. The owner's brief was to keep the environmental output of the 94m at the same level as his significantly smaller superyacht he already owned, which was achieved through VIVA's range of technologically advanced systems she has in place. Though VIVA reaches a top speed in pure-diesel mode of 20 knots, her hybrid system allows her to cruise at 12 knots when her exhaust emissions are treated via the IMO Tier III catalytic converts and diesel particulate filters. Feadship ensured that her air-conditioning system would be optimised to prevent excessive power consumption and that VIVA would include an effective heat recovery system in order to minimise energy wastage. With a minimalist design, as per the owner's instructions, the Dutch shipbuilders worked in conjunction with Peter Marino Architects who delivered the superyacht’s ‘open beach-house-style interior’ to complement VIVA's modern and airy feel.

#72: BLISS  The month of May saw the launch of yet another Feadship sea-bound behemoth, as BLISS prepared to make her way out of Feadship's Makkum shipyard. A prime example of a custom build, BLISS was built almost entirely with the close involvement of her new owners, with their vision now brought to life for the family who can set sail across the globe exploring the delights this planet has to offer. BLISS' capacity for adventure was made possible with the introdcution of her deep water anchor, dynamic positioning system and Polar certification. With a range of 6,000 nautical miles BLISS is likely to give her new owners a sense of freedom that very people are blessed with. 

#35: AHPO Lürssen delivered yet another 100m+ yacht packed with family-focused features ranging from a ginormous gym to a wellness area. The six deck AHPO's name translates as 'grand lady' from Mandarin. She is packed out with innovative engineering systems including Dynamic Positioning for electronic anchoring and a heat recovery system to heat the swimming pool. With accommodation for 14 guests, AHPO is kitted out with a sleek design crafted by the team at Nuvolari & Lenard.

#13: SOLARIS The biggest superyacht of the year measures up at a whopping 140m, making her the largest explorer yacht to ever be built. Delivered by Lloyd Werft, the explorer yacht SOLARIS features the largest ABB Azipod® system ever installed on a superyacht and over 2,000 square metres of glass. As a natural evolution from Lloyd Werft's flagship LUNA, the German shipyard marked itself as a major player on the mega yacht scene with the delivery of yet another ginormous vessel. Featuring eight decks and a sleek white superstructure, little else is known about Solaris and it is her mystery that adds to her allure and charm.

Dutch yacht builder royal huisman unveiled wing 100  - an innovative 100m sailing yacht with a wing mast..

Alongside Royal Huisman as an experienced yacht builder, Dykstra Naval Architects and Mark Whiteley are also onboard. Both have worked on successful projects with the shipyard. The full-aluminum vessel reaches a top speed of 24+ knots. The unstayed rotating wing mast has carbon furling booms.

The shipyard marks that WING 100 is not a sail-assisted motor yacht but an actual sailing yacht.

Ample tender storage is forward under the deck.

With a green energy system into the future

It is not just the pure size that makes it impressive. The electric propulsion can be adaptable to new files or hydrogen fuel cells. Furthermore, to charge the batteries, WING 100 has a hydro generator with 200 kW that can save 40,000 liters of fuel per year, 480 square meters of solar panels on both masts, and intelligent power management.

WING 100 accommodates twelve guests + a nanny or teacher, and a crew of 16 people. Most cabins are located on the lower deck. The owner’s full-beam suite is aft and includes an office, salon, private gym, and spa. Six guest cabins are amidships with two double cabins, three twin-bed cabins one VIP cabin. The crew area with mess is forward; two more crew cabins are on the main deck.

The all-new Sunseeker 100 Yacht is the epitome of a luxury yacht. Powered by MTU 12V 2000 M96X as standard or MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines as an option, the 100 Yacht accommodates up to twelve guests and five crew in complete luxury, reaching speeds of up to 30 knots.

A striking Owner Stateroom forward with a private bow terrace, sunbathing hideaways, a breathtaking single-level exterior deck from flybridge to foredeck, a beautifully proportioned open-plan interior and generous ‘Beach Club’, just a few of her magnificent features. 

The revolutionary Sunseeker ‘Beach Club’ provides an exceptional area to relax at water level. The tender garage can accommodate a Williams 460 Sportjet and GTX255 jet ski, with plentiful stowage for SeaBobs, diving equipment and paddleboards. The innovative X-TEND™ system offers several seating arrangements, facing aft in its lowered position or, at the flick of a switch, forward at cockpit level.

The vast flybridge on board the 100 Yacht flows seamlessly into the foredeck with uninterrupted walk-around access on both sides. The foredeck provides a social space with two separate seating arrangements plus an oversized sunpad. The essential raised pilot house, central to this yacht’s innovative design, incorporates a glazed sliding door aft, allowing uninterrupted views forward from the flybridge.  

Its unique main deck, penthouse-style saloon and luxurious staterooms offer a new-found design direction and material selection providing elegant interiors to enchant any owner. The layering of textural elements and the mix of furnishings and fabrics feels timeless with a modern twist that exudes simplicity and sophistication. Floor-to-ceiling glazing floods the generous saloon with natural daylight, complemented by sliding doors to starboard, helping to bring the outdoors in. A stunning feature wall forward of the dining room showcases exposed and seemingly floating stair treads leading to the wheelhouse above on the port side and lower deck access to starboard. The large, fully equipped galley forward is concealed behind a feature bulkhead, and offers plentiful space and direct side deck access for crew.

The unique main deck layout includes the Owner's Stateroom forward for even greater flexibility and freedom on board. This full-beam stateroom offers a large lobby entrance, walk-in wardrobe with feature shelving, an office and generous en suite. Bathed in natural light courtesy of expansive panoramic glazing, owners can access a first-in-class bow terrace for ultimate privacy through a cleverly sculptured, fully-glazed sliding door forward.

The yacht can be specified as a four or five cabin boat, ideal for the charter market. In either case, the twin amidship cabins can be fitted with Pullman berths for added flexibility. The crew cabin is also worthy of mention, featuring a Captain’s cabin with en suite, two twins each with en suite, a highly specified crew mess.

Kleven and Lürssen to build 100m yacht in new partnership

Two of Northern Europe’s biggest shipyards will collaborate on a new 100 metre explorer yacht, it has been revealed.

Norwegian commercial yard Kleven made the announcement earlier this week (November 14) that it has signed a contract with Lürssen to deliver the vessel to a “non-disclosed customer”.

The as-yet-unnamed explorer yacht will be built, partly outfitted and technically finalised at Kleven’s Norwegian facility before being transported to Lürssen’s Blohm+Voss yard in Hamburg for final outfitting.

Ståle Rasmussen, CEO of Kleven, said: “With their more than 140 years of history in the luxury yacht business, Lürssen is unrivalled in its experience and knowledge, and we are proud of the fact that they have chosen Kleven as their long-term partner.

“Kleven will be leaning heavily on expertise derived from building highly advanced, world class offshore vessels. We hope this is the first of many vessels being built in this partnership,” he added.

Further details are few and far between at this stage, with the designers, accommodation, performance and delivery date all undisclosed.

However, this development builds on a growing trend within the explorer yacht segment for working with commercial yards . Piriou , Vard and Ulstein Werft have all signed projects to build large explorer yachts in recent years. Meanwhile Kleven has already built two yachts over 100 metres, including the 116 metre Ulysses (pictured below), which is currently nearing completion in Germany.

The news comes two months after it was announced that Lürssen Group was part of a consortium of investors who have bought a 40% share in Kleven for 300million NOK (roughly £27million).

Speaking at the time, Rasmussen added: “This is a solid and long-term solution, creating opportunities for new and innovative projects.”
