WORLD FAMOUS SAILING LA VAGABONDE UPGRADES TO RAPIDO 60

WORLD FAMOUS SAILING LA VAGABONDE UPGRADES TO RAPIDO 60

The world’s most exciting sailing news is the long awaited decision that Sailing La Vagabonde will sail the world’s oceans aboard a Rapido 60.

Rapido is filling a segment in the market that is missing: a trimaran that is owner-operated, powerful, ocean-cruising, and can be safely crewed by two. The concept for the world’s fastest production cruising trimaran is designed by world-acclaimed naval architects, Morrelli & Melvin.

SLV comprises an Australian couple, Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu and their two young children. Each week, they bring their adventures to our phones, desktops and iPads via their YouTube videos.

They began documenting their evolving journey on YouTube back in 2014 with a single-hull vessel. After a time, they upgraded to a twin-hull vessel. For the last 18-24 months, the couple have been researching which boat would become the future of their sailing story, and would proudly wear the title Sailing La Vagabonde III.

With the extraordinary reach and exposure of Sailing La Vagabonde, perhaps the Rapido represents the future of sailing. Riley and Elayna explain why and how the Rapido 60, a three-hulled 6o’ (18m) trimaran, met their criteria.

rapido trimaran la vagabonde

Initially, they were worried about the amount of space on board. However, once they were on board, this concern was perfectly fine. Riley describes the fore cabin as being “massive” with a “huge” bed. When you’re standing in the saloon, it’s actually a huge room.

During the test sail, the couple were convinced the boat could move at lightning speed. With just one hand on the helm, they were travelling under sail, maintaining speed at 25.7 knots. Even at that fast speed, it was only slightly heeling over. A Rapido trimaran only gets a heel of up to 15 degrees, this is important as they both want to travel safely while at a good pace. They said that when they were travelling at 20 knots, it felt like they were only going at 10 knots, and it also felt like they had so much more power sitting in reserve.

rapido trimaran la vagabonde

One thing that was really important with the trimaran was that Riley will have the ability to sail it single-handed, when Elayna cares for the two children on the boat.

The Rapido trimarans are stable boats that do not heel, ideal for long distances, short sprints and the passage between. They are ideal for discovering places that others cannot venture to when you sneak up alongside a secluded beach or glide over a reef. The draft of the Rapido 60 is just 0.75m with the rudder and daggerboard retracted.

Having the flexibility to power up and sail away from bad weather systems is paramount. The Rapido can be sailed short-handed with centralised systems, Karver reefing hooks, self-tacking furling jibs, furling reacher and stay sails. Boasting excellent safety, the Rapido is designed to put you in control for fast, safe, fun sailing.

The nets on each side of the Rapido 60 measure 6.3m x 3m (that’s 18.9 m2), providing enormous space to play or lounge upon when the fish are not biting. They also provide an exhilarating vantage point when cruising to watch the water rush by beneath.

The foam sandwich and carbon construction provide an extremely strong and rigid structure. This enables the Rapido to withstand the might of the oceans, without carrying excessive weight.

The T-foil rudder blade is designed to provide additional stability and control. Each float (ama) has four watertight bulkheads. The main hull has five bulkheads to ensure that the Rapido 60 is as safe and unsinkable as possible. The engine and main equipment compartment has two bulkheads and is located under the saloon.

There are three emergency escape hatches: one located in the forward cabin, the second is in the aft cabin, and the third is in the main storage compartment under the cockpit. This storage compartment has been specifically designed as a safe survival area. Automatic and portable bilge pumps are provided.

The helm position offers superb all-round visibility. It is in an elevated position, away from the elements with a hard top bimini with sliding roof. It has a 1.2m wide seat/leaning post for seating comfort and standing support. Main controls are at the helm making single or short-handed sailing easier and safer. Steering is direct with strong well-engineered Jefa systems.

An emergency rudder blade is ready to deploy in an emergency. The engine compartment has an auto fire extinguisher system. There are an additional three portable fire extinguishers and a fire blanket. Diesel is the only fuel on board for engine, stove and heating, which removes the need to carry highly flammable cooking gas.

The head sails are on furlers for ease of deployment and operation. There are twin bow anchors with the main anchor ready to deploy. A dedicated storage area for safety equipment and wet weather gear is located in the cockpit. Jack stays and clip-on points are provided, as are bow and stern cockpit safety rails. Even in the storms of the southern oceans, trimarans are safe, easy to handle and faster on all points of sail due to their wide beam and light weight.

Riley plans to be on hand at the Vietnam-based factory to customise certain aspects of the boat to better suit their family. www.sailing-lavagabonde.com

Rapido have also developed a folding trimaran system, making their new Rapido 40 and 50 models available with a folding mechanism that will allow them to access monohull marina berths. The Rapido folding system keeps the floats vertical when in the folded position, preventing growth from occurring on the sides of the floats and ensuring they remain in pristine condition. The Rapido system also adds to the overall strength of the boat by reducing the loads on the beams when sailing without adding any length to the boat when folded.

The family of adventurers has finally witnessed the launch of La Vagabonde, the third boat to bear this name, a brand new Rapido 60 trimaran. Mixing emotion and excitement, the crew are learning how to handle their new floating home... and facing up to the difficulties of their first voyages.

Who: Elayna, Riley, Darwin and Lenny Where: Nha Trang, Thailand to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia Multihull: Rapido 60 YouTube :  @SailingLaVagabonde

The long-awaited launch of La Vagabonde III finally arrived! Elayna and Riley took part in a traditional ceremony for their Rapido 60, which was resting comfortably on her chocks, in the company of the shipyard staff. Counterfeit banknotes were burnt, and incense and food were placed on an altar near the trimaran to grant her the protection and goodwill of the sea gods. Almost three years after announcing on their YouTube channel that they had chosen a Rapido 60 as the successor to their Outremer 45, Elayna and Riley were delighted to discover the finishing touches and layout of their new home, where they chose almost every detail. “Seeing ideas and dreams of ours come to life like this is so addictive,” says a delighted Elayna. As well as going from two to three hulls, one of the big new features for the couple is access to Starlink, an essential tool for their lifestyle as seafaring influencers: “Over the years, we’ve struggled to traverse the world as digital nomads,” she recalls, “During the early days, it was a challenge of living with my ancient laptop trying to edit whilst uploading episodes from strange offices or hotel lobbies around the world. If only the Elayna of 2015 had known just 8 years later, we’d be calling this place home…” But it was finally time to get down to business, which consisted of craning the boat up and then lifting it over the many trees that still separated it from the water. Riley climbed aboard while Elayna watched from the ground, not without apprehension: “That was terrifying for me to watch, but they did a good job,” she announced once the perilous operation was complete. It was an emotional moment for the new owners and the shipyard representatives, with a sense of relief, excitement and the start of a new adventure. The Rapido team, made up of Mark, Paul and Zam, then took charge of delivering the boat from Ho Chi Minh City to a marina in Nha Trang, where the family could begin loading their belongings on board, shipped from the States where they had been waiting since parting company with La Vagabonde II. It was also an opportunity to learn more about the trimaran from Mark... and to battle with the authorities over a visa problem for Riley and Darwin, which forced them to leave Vietnam temporarily while Elayna and the Rapido team embarked on a few short sails to detect any problems that might need sortingout. “I really wish Riley could be here, but at the same time, I’m happy he’s not because I’m learning more. It’s the default situation for the man to take charge and take the helm and crank the winches but… I’m the captain today!” smiled Elayna. For the first time, she discovered the potential of their brand new trimaran: “I was so amazed by the tacking angles we can tack through pm the Rapido, they had to be seriously close to 90°. It’s like a racing monohull, when you trying to make way that is such a huge win.” Once the visa problem had been sorted out and Riley and Darwin were back on board, it was time to leave Vietnam and head for Malaysia, still in the company of Mark, Paul and Zam. Their presence was reassuring, and a few extra hands were welcome for this first long sail, especially as the weather conditions were rather complicated: “There is a typhoon that has just come over the Philippines. The sky is so full of rain it is dumping down on us right now and there is lighting everywhere, it is so loud…” Nevertheless, these conditions enabled Riley to see the potential of the Rapido for himself: “We’re hitting a lot of 15 and 16 knots. I’m just starting to experience the power of this boat and It’s pretty incredible!” The first night at sea proved to be a difficult one. While Elayna was looking after the feverish, seasick children, the 50 knots of wind took its toll on one of the sails, and it was a struggle to secure the torn remains. “The crew was surprised by a wall of wind and water, destroying not only our external microphone but our whole staysail.” On top of that there were problems with the two engines, which wouldn’t start, and lots of water in the cabin, where one of the windows hadn’t been closed properly... Riley summed up that tumultuous first night as follows: “We did quite a good job of learning and staying alive!” The second night, which was calmer both in terms of the weather and seasickness, enabled the crew to get some rest and then take full advantage of the much more comfortable sailing conditions on the third day (8 knots over the ground in 19 knots of wind). The calmer conditions enabled Riley to resolve some battery and electric propulsion problems with the help of the equipment suppliers and the welcome presence of Starlink. The crew put in at a Malaysian marina for repairs and work, which were badly needed before they could set off again to discover Asia. Rapido 60 selected to be La Vagabonde III | Multihull World Australia

rapido trimaran la vagabonde

Young Aussie couple, Riley Whitelum and Elayna Carausu went from backpackers to superstar sailors via their video posts on YouTube that gleaned them enough subscribers (a staggering 1.6 million) that enables them to sail full time. Recently, their fame was extended when they took teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg across the Atlantic in order to reduce her carbon travel emissions.

The couple began their sailing life on a small monohull and then an Outremer catamaran before ordering the Rapido 60. “We started looking to upgrade and while I wanted a boat that could go fast, I’m much more interested in average crossing times. I mean, it’s good fun to go fast but that’s the least important on my list of things. I want to be able to go at a good pace safely,” said Riley.

After an extensive 18 month global search, well documented on their YouTube channel, the family flew to New Zealand in 2019 for a sea trial with Paul Koch on the Rapido 60 Romanza, owned by Dougall and Jaz Love. The couple were duly impressed, as Riley recalls: “I know that the Rapido sails unbelievably well, which is the main thrust behind all of our decision making … The only thing I was worried about was the amount of space on board.”

However, after visiting Romanza the couple were more than happy. “When you’re standing in the saloon, you’re actually standing in a huge room.” Partner Elayna has just had their second child, so had her own priorities for the new boat: “One thing that was really important for us with the trimaran was that Riley will have the ability to sail it single-handed because we will have two kids on the boat.”

The new boat will be named La Vagabonde III and launch in 2022.
