Bravada Launches Head-Turning Houseboat on Lake Powell

If you don’t want to cruise outside the United States because of the pandemic, you might want to think about Lake Powell, on the border of Arizona and Utah, where you could enjoy all the amenities of home, plus some, offered by the new 75-foot Bravada Yachts luxury houseboat.

Whether you’re on the Bravada or some other boat, at Lake Powell you won’t feel lonely. About two million people a year (in non-pandemic years) visit the lake. Basically a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River, and part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the lake is about 200 miles long and has 1,960 miles of shoreline, with some 80 side canyons. The new Bravada, named Invictus , was launched there in December, and it’s been turning heads ever since. It’s part of Bravada’s Atlas V-Series, and it has two-plus decks, 3,200 square feet of space, five cabins plus two cuddy cabins, two heads, two galleys, seven flat-screen TVs, a Bose sound system, Quartz countertops, a fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, water filtration system, central AC and heating and four PWC ramps with electric winches.

On the upper deck you can keep warm during the evenings sitting around the fire pit, or take a plunge into Lake Powell (it’s 3,700 feet deep) from the 15-foot waterslide. Or you could just relax on the sun deck with daybeds.

The single helm station has back-up cameras, so the captain can check his surroundings. If you’re worried about handling a 75-foot boat with a 22-foot beam, Bravada will send someone to teach you how to drive and anchor. The Bravada plant is not far away in Tolleson, just outside Phoenix. The boat is powered by twin Volvo sterndrives.

Aaron Browning, the Bravada CEO, says it took two years to plan and build Invictus . It certainly doesn’t look like most other lake boats. “We’re excited to see just how far we can push the envelope in the houseboat industry,” he says.

Business Buzz: Bravada Yachts Transforms the Houseboat Industry

The company recently launched Invictus, a $2 million, 3,200-square-foot luxury houseboat designed by naval architect J. David Weiss. Bravada CEO Aaron Browning and president Robert Gutierrez tasked Weiss with “bringing some of my ocean yacht design sensibilities to freshwater vessels,” he says. Gone are the stodgy, blocky silhouettes typical of these barges, which were originally designed by RV manufacturers. “We drew a lot of inspiration from more organic shapes, and feathers and wings… the form should speak to movement, not stasis,” Weiss says. “I love cars as well, so the shapes of this were also inspired by contemporary models from Bugatti and McLaren.”

This metro Phoenix company makes luxury houseboats that can cost up to $2 million — take a look

You might wonder why a builder of big houseboats would set up shop in the middle of the desert, miles from the nearest navigable lake or river.

The answer, it turns out, has little to do with water.

Skilled labor availability, or the lack thereof, explains the Arizona location of Bravada Yachts' boat-making factory in an industrial section of Tolleson, among warehouses and other manufacturing sites. 

"We're here because we can't find a workforce in Page to accommodate what we do," said Mia Gutierrez, the company's business-development officer. She stood in a steel-framed boat under construction for an interview, talking above the buzz of drills, the beeping of forklifts and noise from other machinery.

The company's staff of roughly 70 includes welders, metal framers, carpenters, painters, electricians and other skilled laborers.

Most destined for Lake Powell

Page, or more specifically Lake Powell in far northern Arizona, is where most of Bravada's houseboats wind up, although the 15-year-old company also has boats destined for Roosevelt Lake, Lake Pleasant and other waterways closer to metro Phoenix.

Regardless of the destination, getting them there isn't easy. Completed houseboats are shipped in sections on specially built trailers, typically in the middle of the night with police escorts. Transportation and other costs run tens of thousands of dollars.

"It's a very intense process," Gutierrez said. "You can't just throw them on the back of a truck."

Especially Bravada's vessels. These aren't the boxy pontoon boats that many people envision as houseboats. They are large, sleek structures equipped with granite countertops, multiple TVs and other high-tech electronics, water slides, fire pits and, on some models, hot tubs, helicopter pads and up to 16 beds and five bathrooms spread among four decks. Construction can take up to a year or more.

They're also vessels not made of wood but steel framing and various composite materials that are water-proof as well as fire and mold resistant.

Nor do they sell for the $300,000 to $500,000 for standard houseboats but rather $900,000 to $2 million or so, Gutierrez said. She estimates 40% of Bravada's buyers own their houseboats outright, while the other 60% of vessels are jointly owned in arrangements somewhat similar to resort timeshares.

Coronavirus' effect on company

It's a niche market for sure, but one that is faring well during coronavirus lockdowns in particular.

"We're seeing an explosion of lake boating," said CEO Aaron Browning, one of Bravada's two owners, along with Gutierrez's husband, Robert, another company officer. "But it's also a long-term activity that people don't get tired of."

In fact, the company has struggled to keep its operations humming amid the coronavirus pandemic that has led to sick-time absences for some workers while delaying shipments of raw materials and components, some of it imported.

Deliveries of steel that normally take two to three weeks lately have been running up to eight weeks, Gutierrez said. One British supplier of specialty marine paints has been "struggling to stay open," she added.

Bravada makes eight to 10 boats in a typical year but didn't share a number for 2020, when production slowed owing to the pandemic.

Boats combine leisure, business uses

Spending a week or more a houseboat can be a nice way for families and friends to ride out the pandemic while avoiding busy airports, restaurants, hotel lobbies and the like.

A houseboat also can be a great way to host business clients.

Justin Tomlinson, a 52-year-old pharmaceutical-industry consultant who splits his time between the Salt Lake City area and Switzerland, uses a week on a houseboat at Lake Powell to entertain small groups of executives, without spouses, to conduct various think-tank sessions.

He's a co-owner in one of Bravada's Atlas-V houseboats, which feature five bedrooms, two bathrooms and 2.5 levels.

"Lake Powell is like the Moon for many of them," Tomlinson said of his European guests. "They've never seen anything like it."

Guests like to congregate and discuss business around eating areas and on the open-air top deck, Tomlinson said, and the visitors enjoy hikes in nearby box canyons during his week in August. "They get out in nature and let their guards down," he said.

Like Tomlinson, many of Bravada's Lake Powell customers come from Utah.

Other costs of houseboat ownership

Some boating enthusiasts buy vessels individually while others, like Tomlinson, purchase shares at a cost of $100,000 to $160,000 or so each. That gives them use of maybe seven to 10 days annually during the peak boating season during warmer months, plus various other days at other times of the year.

As an example, one boat recently shipped to Powell has 11 owners, Gutierrez said. Bravada helps to arrange shared ownership.

Bravada employs about 50 people in Tolleson plus a couple-dozen more in its transportation arm. The private company doesn't provide revenue or other financial numbers, but Browning said it is poised for a strong 2021.

There are various ongoing expenses for owners, including pumping fees, slip fees, repairs and expenses to clean between owners. These and other costs might average around $3,000 to $6,000 annually per owner in sharing arrangements, she said. Single owners would face around $35,000 in annual expenses.

And while manning a houseboat is something that owners can do themselves, some opt to hire a captain at additional expense. Tomlinson said members of his ownership group agreed to hire a captain to minimize the risks of collisions or other mishaps that can lead to costly repairs and drive up insurance costs.

Most manufacturers in eastern U.S.

Houseboat makers aren't as numerous as those producing sailboats or more traditional motor boats. Most houseboat manufacturers are located in the eastern U.S., especially in Mississippi River watershed states including Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. There's also a notable cluster in northern California.

Given the high costs of transporting boats great distances, especially over mountains, the industry is a highly localized one. 

"Competition isn't something we really worry about," Gutierrez said. "There's enough demand for everyone right now."

2014 Bravada Houseboat Imagination is located at Antelope Point Marina Dry Storage on Lake Powell. From a Dream to Reality

In 2005, Jim and Tracey Goettl purchased their first houseboat. Although hopes and dreams of something bigger than a 16 by 68 were often in their thoughts, this was the boat that started it all for them.

Jim came from a family with very strong engineering and manufacturing ties in both the mid-west and Arizona. At the time, he was actively involved in his own company in both designing and building high-end custom homes. Little did he know then, his skills and expertise would be brought to the houseboating industry just a few short years later.

Having used their smaller houseboat for one season, Jim set out to design a new houseboat for his family. The design included some high-end finishes not yet seen in houseboats at the time: granite tops, a 50-inch pull down plasma TV and a full galley on the second level, complete with dishwasher, sub-zero refrigerator and Wolf barbeque. At this point he took the design to Dave Taylor of Unlimited Houseboats in Page, Ariz. Taylor was the local dealer for the nation's largest houseboat manufacturer who at the time was based in Kentucky. This would be the beginning of a very unique and rewarding relationship between the two. The manufacturer set out to build the boat to Jim's design, and the Goettl family was thrilled with the result.

Once delivered to Lake Powell in southern Utah, people could not get enough of this innovative step forward. As a result of this attention, the houseboat manufacturer sold nine houseboats with the identical floorplan into the Lake Powell market that next year. The average price range of each of these boats was a million dollars. Despite the changing market and a looming bad economy, it was evident that people wanted high-end boats and they were willing to pay for them.

Innovation Breeds  Innovation

In February of 2008, Jim was invited to be part of an advisory meeting with the Kentucky manufacturer to discuss more innovative ideas. Jim listened as others suggested that consumers were now looking for more yacht-like styling and design, while still retaining the houseboat feel. Given the success of Jim's design, and Taylor's successful sales of those same boats, it was suggested that things be taken a step further and that Jim begin designs for a whole new level of houseboats. These would be manufactured in Kentucky, but private labeled to market across the country.

Through this process it became apparent to Jim how underdeveloped houseboat manufacturing was and how new and current technology could be brought to the table.

On the flight back to Arizona, Jim sketched the profile for this new line of houseboats. The design was sleek and definitely very yacht-like, with a floorplan that was equally exciting. The line would be called Bravada Yachts.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer that would build the very first of this new line completed the boat just before being forced to shut down because of the poor economy.

The houseboat featured full aluminum side walls, sunken floors in the salon and stateroom, 8-foot tall ceilings, high-end finishes throughout, and a fourth-level heliport.

"The economy in Arizona took a hit, but people still wanted the boats," recalls Jim. "We had several people who had committed to buying a Bravada Yacht through Dave Taylor, and now everyone was asking, who is going to build our boat?"

Despite warnings from people-even family-that this wasn't the time or the industry to invest in, Jim moved forward and decided he would be the one to build these boats.

A big part of the economy in Phoenix is construction and property values had plummeted. This allowed a very unique opportunity to find the exact facility Jim believed they would need.

Additionally, Jim already owned a home building company so it made sense to simply change the name of that entity, and start building houseboats as part of that business. Compass North Development, luxury home builder, became Compass North Industries, luxury houseboat manufacturer.

Open For Business

Compass North Industries, moved into their 65,000 square-foot plant in December of 2009. After a quick setup, manufacturing officially began in January, a month later.

The plant is currently running at maximum capacity. The majority of boats being built today consist of three-level minimums with some boats even having four levels.

"The average price of these boats is at about the million dollar mark and still today, as more people see these types of boats, the more attention is given to us in building them," says Jim. "We currently have nine boats in the plant that will be delivered by mid-May, all to the Lake Powell market."

The greatest bulk is the GT and Limited Series, which are the manufacturer's upper-end models. The Lake Powell market being one of the nation's largest houseboating destinations and located only four hours away from Phoenix, was their initial focus. However, Bravada Yachts have since reached beyond that initial focus and are currently selling to multiple locations in the west like in northern California and throughout the country to lakes in Texas. And the houseboat manufacturer has even started marketing houseboats in Australia and China.

For Today's Market

Bravada Yachts thrives on building high-end boats and that's been the key to their early success.

"There is no need to try and chase the old cheese," says Jim. "There is no reason to go back to the old styles in houseboats because we feel it takes high-end products to work and sell in today's market."

Now into just its third year of manufacturing Bravada Yachts, the company continues to thrive despite the up and down economy.

"Last year we sold around 23 boats and are hoping to be at 40 plus boats annually by 2015," says Jim. "We are thankful for the relationship we have with Dave Taylor and his dealership Bravada Yacht Sales, Inc. in the Page/Lake Powell area. He believed in these boats from the beginning, and to this day is the only authorized factory dealer of Bravada Yachts."

A Family Affair

What began with a love of houseboating has become a passion that Jim's family carries. Jim's wife Tracey currently helps coordinate the Interiors of the boats. Their kids, Alexis and Steven, have each put in hours on the boats, especially during the first year of manufacturing. Alexis currently studies at Northern Arizona University in accounting, but plans to head back to Compass North Industries and the plant to work after graduation. Their son Steven, who is a senior in high school, also has the engineering skills in which his father has proven to be successful and will continue to work on these skills at NAU studying mechanical engineering.
