New to Yachting

As the Monaco Yacht Show ends each year, soon follows the close of the Mediterranean cruising season with many yachts choosing to make their way across the Atlantic to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale Yacht Show (FLIBS) at the end of October, and on to the Caribbean for the winter cruising season.
When is the Caribbean Yachting Season?
The Caribbean yachting season runs from late November to May, although the Antigua Charter Yacht Show in early December is generally considered to be the official marker of the start of the Caribbean season. The majority of yachts will arrive in the Caribbean in the first few weeks of December, just time for the Christmas charter period, often using Antigua or St Maarten as their base for the season. The majority of yachts will then begin their crossings back to the Mediterranean in March or April to get ready for the summer cruising season, although some yachts may remain in the Caribbean as late as May.
This means that both October and April are a time of great change for the yachting industry. In October, many of the yachts that have been cruising the Mediterranean begin preparing to make the journey to the US East Coast for the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) at the end of the month, and on to the beautiful islands of the Caribbean thereafter. This is, therefore, a key time for those seeking a Caribbean yacht job, as their captains typically begin to hire new crew here in the Med before setting sail. You can find opportunities for the Caribbean yachting season and beyond by keeping an eye on our yacht job vacancies page.
Strategies for Finding A Caribbean Yacht Job
If you're a crew member or crew hopeful currently in the Med, September and October are the peak months to find a Caribbean yacht job for the season. What is your strategy? Are you doing your best to find a yacht to cross on, or are you planning to fly across to Fort Lauderdale to find work?
Without question, we believe that is always best for candidates already in the Med to start their job hunt there, as most yachts tend to crew up before setting sail for the US and Caribbean.
For the best chance of finding a yacht to cross with, join a yacht crew agency like ours, and follow their advice for finding work on a yacht . If it is looking like you might not be able to get seasonal employment before the yachts set sail, you might consider looking instead for a yacht delivery job, as this will give you valuable experience, sea time, and save you an airfare!
If you are not at all successful in finding a Caribbean yacht job in the Med, some crew are granted another chance to find work by flying ahead to Florida. It is however worth noting that many yachts based in Fort Lauderdale will be registered in the US (US flagged), so you will be unable to find work onboard unless you already hold a US passport.
How Can YPI CREW Help You Get a Yacht Job this Caribbean Season?
Here at YPI CREW, our super, superyacht recruiters know exactly which yachts are "crossing the pond' for the Caribbean yachting season, and which are looking for crew. So, before you book that plane ticket, make sure you have spoken to us about all the current options available to you to find work, including yacht deliveries. We can also give you the low-down on the yacht qualifications and visas you'll need to work in the Caribbean.
Already in the States or the Caribbean, or planning to fly there? YPI CREW has a global fleet of yachts on its books, so get in touch with us to find out what exciting opportunities we can offer you.

Get a Yacht Job in the Caribbean and Bahama Islands
Yacht jobs in the Caribbean have a lot of variety on offer. There many types of vessels sailing this area, and quite understandably so – it is right up there as one of our top 10 picture-perfect places to work. The islands are home to vibrant and healthy marine and coral life, making it popular for scuba diving and snorkelling. Pristine waters, beautiful beaches, tropical forests, volcanic mountains, rustic beach bars and island vibes are just a few of the jewels of the Caribbean.
The Caribbean and Bahamas are very popular for superyachts, especially during the Northern Hemisphere winter months: December – May. Keep reading if you are interested in sailing one of the most beautiful charters in the world!
What Qualifications Do You Need?
The bare necessities to qualify for work onboard a yacht include:
- STCW Basic Safety Training course
- An ENG1 crew medical certificate
Due to the popularity of the Caribbean route, however, we recommend that you seek opportunities to grow your skills and experience, so that you are not a total novice when applying. Besides your Interior Crew Training Course (if you are interested in becoming a steward or stewardess), why not consider additional courses that speak to the activities available in the Caribbean and Bahamas? Think about scuba diving or taking part in a course to learn about the diverse coral and marine life. This will also give you more talking points with guests!
Where to go and When
Vessels generally tend to crew up for the Caribbean season in October and November. Most vessels will base themselves in South Florida, making Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach the most common places for crew to find work. Yachts may hire crew again before crossing to their next seasonal destination, the most popular of which is the Mediterranean in March and April. Keep this in mind, because if you impress on your Caribbean charter, you may get rehired for the Mediterranean trip!
Visa & Legal Requirements
To work on a boat cruising the Caribbean it is advisable to have both a Schengen and B1B2 visa as some of the Islands still fall under European and US dependency. It is also important to have many spare pages in your passport for a Caribbean season, as there is immigration control which requires an entry and exit stamp in your passport for every Island. Speak to us if you’d like to discuss possible courses that could benefit you . Our partner academy is fully ITY & MCA internationally accredited.
If you’d just like to get an idea whether a yacht job is really for you, consider downloading our ultimate yacht crew handbook that will give you the ins and outs of yacht crew life, with additional tips to help you get that job on a private yacht.

Cleaners in South Florida are sweeping up the cash.
Housekeepers in South Florida are making about $150,000 a year as the influx of new, rich residents has created bidding wars for high-end cleaners, staffing companies told NBC News .
“I have been placing staff for 30 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this,” said April Berube, founder of the Wellington Agency, which places household staff in the Sunshine State, New York and other locations.
“We’ve seen such a boom from people relocating, especially Palm Beach and Miami.”
In recent years, Florida has been flooded with new residents from New York and other high-tax states rushing to take advantage of the state having no individual income tax.
More than 91,000 New Yorkers left the Empire State in 2022 alone to relocate to Florida, according to Census Bureau data.
And now that the houses have been filled, they need to be cleaned.
“For housekeepers it’s wonderful,” Berube said. “For us, it’s extremely difficult. It’s a severe shortage.”
Mansions, hotels, resorts and businesses are all competing for cleaning staff shooting up the prices for these positions.
Pay for housekeepers has rocketed from about $25 an hour in 2020 to $45 or $50 an hour today, according to some agencies.
In Palm Beach, housekeepers with experience in wealthy homes are typically making between $120,000 and $150,000 a year, along with 401(k) plans, health care and other benefits, including overtime.
Melissa Psitos, the founder of Lily Pond Services, told NBC News that she recently had a client in the area hire a head housekeeper for $250,000 a year, including overtime, and the worker travels with the family to their other homes.
“At first they’re in shock, and they say, ‘No way I’m paying that,’” Berube explained. “It’s even uncomfortable for me to give them the numbers. But when they try to hire someone for less, with less experience, they almost always come back to us and say, ‘I learned my lesson. We are willing to pay for the experience.’”
She noted that housekeepers of this caliber need specific tools and skills, such as moving quietly and unnoticed and knowing how to carefully clean antiques, which makes the hiring pool much smaller than the demand.
“There is just not enough supply,” she said.

9 Ways to Visit the Caribbean on a Budget
Have you ever wanted to indulge in the exotic white sand beaches, vibrant cultures, and crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean ? The allure of the Caribbean is undeniable, but the idea of a budget might seem like a wet blanket on your tropical fantasies. Don't worry; here, you’ll learn some budget-friendly ways to visit the Caribbean on a budget.

Plan Your Travel During the Low Season
Flights and hotel rates are very expensive during the peak season, from November to April. Peak season is the time for Carnival celebrations. Tourism is especially high for islands like Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, St. Kitts, and Puerto Rico.
Prices are cheaper during the low season in May/June. Most hotels offer group packages and other incentives during the low season. This helps to boost tourism and attract travelers.
Look for House Sitting or Pet Sitting Jobs
You can apply for house-sitting or pet-sitting jobs while you plan a trip, this is how you get free vacations . This works well for both the traveler and homeowner; the travelers can save on accommodation costs, while the homeowner saves money on pet kennelling fees.
Homeowners also get peace of mind knowing that their house is safe while they are away, and the house sitters can immerse themselves in a community and get a deeper sense of the island.
Indulge In Street Foods Rather Than Fancy Restaurants
Try indulging your taste buds in exotic street foods that line the streets' corners. You should embrace the local flavors and immerse yourself by opting for street vendors and market stalls over high-end restaurants.
Not only will you get to try unique dishes bursting with Caribbean spices and culture, but you'll also save a significant amount of money.
Imagine savoring the flavors of Jamaica, where savory jerk chicken infused with spices tantalizes your taste buds. Then, picture yourself in Puerto Rico, indulging in crispy "alcapurrias'' generously stuffed with savory meats or succulent seafood.
Meanwhile, in Trinidad and Tobago, a delightful vegetarian option awaits called doubles. These are curried chickpeas nestled between two soft, warm flatbreads. And how could anyone resist the temptation of trying the conch fritters in the Bahamas, a genuine taste of the ocean's bounty?
Avoid Hurricane Season
Avoid traveling to the Caribbean during the hurricane season. Hurricane season is usually from June to November each year. Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao are safer choices during this time because these islands lie outside the hurricane belt.
Travel Insurance is a great option to have when traveling during hurricane season. It covers claims for unexpected expenses should you become stranded.
Research And Plan Activities
When traveling to the Caribbean, always research activities that interest you beforehand.
Try researching independent activities vendors. These residents offer services like touring, hiking, and boat rides cheaper than the hotels and resorts.
You could also look at Airbnb experiences; here, you can easily see all types of adventures with locals, whether it be cooking, fishing, or heading out on a boat for the day. There are so many options, and you also get to see the reviews from other guests.
Opt For Alternative Transport
When exploring the island, transportation may be expensive. It’s best to use ride-sharing apps, bike rentals, or walking rather than spend money on car rentals. These options offer less hassle and are more enjoyable.
Most islands use taxi apps like Uber, Rideshare, and Ride Caribbean.
Volunteer Programs
This option is a little out of the box and is more intended for smaller groups or solo travelers. The International Volunteer HQ has several volunteer projects, which include:
- marine conservation
- animal/veterinary care
- child/youth development
- business/community development
- environmental sustainability
- special education/ childcare
There are volunteer programs in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Belize. These volunteer programs are low-cost and hosted. You receive training, accommodations, and meals for 3-5 hours of volunteer work per day. This excludes weekends. You can tour the island in your spare time. You also get discounted flights and tours.
Opt for an Airbnb
Another great way to plan a vacation on a budget is by using Airbnb instead of picking a resort or hotel. Below are some of the pros and cons of using Airbnb.
- Cost-Effective: Airbnb accommodations are more budget-friendly than traditional resorts and hotels.
- Ideal for Groups: Airbnb properties can comfortably house families or larger groups, making them a cost-effective choice for travelers with companions.
However, it's important to be aware of some potential drawbacks:
- Self-Service Properties: Some Airbnb rentals may require self-service, so be prepared for a more independent stay.
- Complex Policies and Fees: Airbnb's cancellation and booking policies can sometimes be intricate, so read and understand them thoroughly.
- Varying Standards: The actual living conditions of Airbnb properties may not always align with their descriptions or photos, so managing your expectations is crucial.
Exploring the Caribbean on a budget doesn't mean sacrificing the magic and beauty of this tropical paradise. With these wallet-friendly tips, you can embark on a memorable Caribbean adventure without breaking the bank.

Royal Caribbean set to resume cruises out of Baltimore nearly 2 months after Key Bridge collapse
Vision of the seas voyage will mark the first cruise from the port since the francis scott key bridge collapsed.
Baltimore is going to have to work hard to attract shippers back to our terminals: Louis Campion
Maryland Motor Truck Association President and CEO Louis Campion on the recovery and impact to the trucking industry from the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse.
Royal Caribbean International plans to resume cruises out of Baltimore, Maryland, later this month, now that the channel in and out of the busy port was reopened on Tuesday to a depth of up to 45 feet.
The news comes nearly two months after the container ship Dali crashed into a support of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26, sending the structure smashing into the Patapsco River below, and on top of the vessel.
On Monday, crews used explosives to break apart the largest remaining piece of the bridge resting on top of the Dali, causing the mangled metal to fall into the water. Crews were expected to assess the remaining bridge debris near the grounded ship before re-floating the vessel and moving it out of the channel.
Enough of the structure has been removed to resume shipments in and out of Port Baltimore, and on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard reopened the Fort McHenry limited access channel to an available depth of 45 feet for commercial vessels daily, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.
BALTIMORE BRIDGE COLLAPSE POSES ‘TEMPORARY RISK’ TO LOCAL, STATE ECONOMIES: MOODY'S

The Port of Baltimore shared the news on Facebook, saying the channel has a horizontal clearance of 350 feet and a vertical clearance of 214 feet because of power lines above, though the depth and width may increase as salvage operations continue in the area.
Still, transit in the channel remains at the discretion of the Coast Guard, based on weather conditions and salvage operations.
The reopening means cruise ships like Royal Caribbean International’s Vision of the Seas are resuming operations.

On May 25, the Vision of the Seas will depart Baltimore for a five-night voyage to Bermuda.
"Royal Caribbean International looks forward to returning to the Port of Baltimore once again," a spokesperson for Royal Caribbean told Fox News Digital. "Vision of the Seas will set sail on a five-night itinerary as planned on Saturday, May 25, after completing its previously scheduled drydock in The Bahamas."
In a social media post, the Port of Baltimore expressed excitement over the return of cruise ships in and out of the city.

"This marks the first cruise departing Baltimore since the Key Bridge incident," the post read. "Are you as excited as we are? If you’ve never cruised before from Baltimore, come find out why it’s the best cruise port on the East Coast. Baltimore is back!"
Another cruise company, Carnival Cruise Line, also offers voyages out of Baltimore Harbor. After the Key Bridge collapsed, the company moved the Carnival Legend’s operations to Norfolk, Virginia, to allow rescue and remediation efforts to continue at the scene of the disaster.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.
- Superyachts are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
- The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
- Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.
Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.
As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."
A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.
That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.
"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.
Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.
Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.
"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.
One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.
At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.
"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.
If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.
Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.
"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.
Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
