Introduction to the boating world, enabling you to become a competent crew member aboard a sailing or power driven vessel. Course content includes nautical terminology, boat handling, knots and basic seamanship.

Day Skipper

On successful completion of the Day Skipper course you will be entitled to skipper a vessel over nine meters in length, within 15NM of your home port. It is a starting point to a career within the sailing industry.

Coastal Skipper

On successful completion of this course you will be entitled to skipper a vessel anywhere, but within 50NM of the coast.

Yacht Master Offshore

On successful completion of your Coastal Skipper and the logging of the required 2800NM, the next step for you is the Yacht Master Offshore . Once completed you are allowed to skipper a yacht on any ocean passage.

></center></p><p>STCW certificates are internationally recognized marine safety certificates, which are required to work on commercial vessels in any maritime industry.</p><p>The modules include</p><ul><li>Elementary First Aid</li><li>Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention</li><li>Personal Survival Techniques with Proficiency in Life Rafts</li><li>Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities</li><li>Proficiency in Designated Security Duties</li></ul><p>Duration: 11 days – on shore accommodation and meals required.</p><h2>1) COMPETENCE IN DESIGNATED SECURITY DUTIES – STCW CODE A-VI/6-2</h2><p>This course is intended to provide the knowledge required for vessel personnel who are assigned specific security duties in connection with a Ship Security Plan to perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code A – VI / 6-2 and/or Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS 74 s amended and/or the IMO ISPS Code.</p><p>Those that successfully complete the course should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to undertake the duties assigned under the SSP. The knowledge shall include, but not limited to:</p><ul><li>Knowledge of current security threats and patterns</li><li>Recognise the detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices</li><li>Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security</li><li>Techniques used to circumvent security measures</li><li>Crowd management and control techniques</li><li>Security related communications</li><li>Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans</li><li>Operation of security equipment and systems</li><li>Testing, calibrating and at sea maintenance of security equipment and systems</li><li>Inspection, control and monitoring techniques and</li><li>Methods of physical searches of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and ship stores</li></ul><p>Entry Standards</p><p>It is assumed that those attending this course will be serving seafarers (or other ship’s personnel) and are likely to be assigned specific security duties in connection with the Ship Security Plan.</p><p>Course Certificate</p><p>Documentary evidence should be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed training in, “Maritime Security for Ship Personnel with Specific Security Duties” based on this course.</p><h2>2) ELEMENTARY FIRST AID – STCW CODE A-VI/1-3</h2><p>This course aims to provide the training for learners to provide elementary first aid on board ship, in accordance with section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code. On meeting the minimum standard of competence in elementary first aid, a learner will be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of a person with medical first aid skills or a person in charge of medical care on board.</p><p>The course is open to all seafarers who are serving on board, Super Yachting Industry (RYA) and the Cruise line Industry, it is not valid in any other sector of the maritime industry. There are no particular educational requirements.</p><p>On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standard of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-3.</p><h2>3) PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES – STCW CODE A-VI/1-1</h2><p>This course aims to provide the training for learners to provide personal survival techniques on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.</p><p>This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A – VI/1, Table A-VI/1-1. On meeting the minimum standards of competence in personal survival techniques, a learner will have the knowledge and skills to work within a shipboard team. He or she will understand the basic instructions and be sufficiently aware of his or her roles in order to contribute to survival</p><p>This course is designed to equip the itinerant first-time seafarer with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit into the safety systems of the vessel and company. They will be sufficiently familiar with these systems and will also be aware of where to access additional information to broaden this basic knowledge Course Certificate On successful completion of the course and demonstration of competence, a document may be issued certifying that the holder has met the standards of competence specified in Table A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code.</p><h2>4) PERSONAL SAFETY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY – STCW CODE A-VI/1-4</h2><p>General Understanding</p><p>These courses are designed for the Seafarer that are already in possession of a VALID certificate that is about to expire. Certificates that have already expired are NOT VALID and the person will have to repeat the entire course again.</p><p>This model course aims to provide the training for learners to provide personal safety and social responsibility on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code.</p><p>This syllabus covers the requirements of the STCW Convention Chapter VI, Section A – VI/1, Table A-VI/1-4. On meeting the minimum standards of competence in personal safety and social responsibility, a learner will have the knowledge and skills to work to fit into the safety systems of the vessel and company. They will be sufficiently familiar with these systems and will also be aware of where to access additional information to broaden this basic knowledge.</p><p>This course is designed to equip the itinerant first-time seafarer with the necessary skills and knowledge to fit into the safety systems of the vessel and company. The emphasis of this course is to produce sea-going personnel who are properly trained in terms of the International Standards and Certification for Watchkeepers (STCW).</p><p>The training programme, MARINE FIRE FIGHTING, is accredited by SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Authority) and its emphasis is to ensure Safety of Lives at Sea. (SOLAS). The course aims to provide the training for candidates in firefighting and fire prevention in accordance with the requirements of the STCW Code, according to the syllabus set out in Table A-VI/1 – 2 and the SAMSA code.</p><p>At the end of this training course, all learners should be able to demonstrate competence in:</p><ul><li>Minimizing the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire.</li><li>Fighting and extinguishing fires. We offer South African Sailing (S.A.S.) courses from competent crew to yachtmaster.

Courses Offered

Cape Point Sailing Academy offers all SAS courses from competent crew to yachtmaster.

All sailing school instructors are qualified and SAS examiners conduct exams.

The school does have a SAS examiner but we do not examine our own students.

Private tuition, for those who need flexible tuition or just if you want to go at your own pace. We can do either private tuition on your own vessel or on our vessel. Motor, sail monohull,or multihull. Our experienced instructors have many miles on all of the above type vessels.

We also offer one day courses, including First Aid level 1 and Engine maintenance.

RYA YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE PACKAGE

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Package

Sign up for our most popular Superyacht Deckhand course and fast track yourself to the front of the CV queue and potential employment with the all-inclusive RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Course run over +/- 14 weeks in Cape Town and Langebaan.

Completion of the Yachtmaster course, will earn Yacht Deckhand students their RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate of competence (CoC) and “Captain’s license” to skipper a yacht of up to 24 metres & 200 gross tons in waters up to 150 miles from a safe haven. RYA sail training provided by our partners at Yachtmaster Ocean Sailing School.

Considered the Rolls Royce of yachting qualifications, this 14-week Yachtmaster journey, complete with 4-week open ocean mileage trip, will turn you from a beginner into a skilled and professional Superyacht Deckhand and sailor ready to take on the challenges of the wind and the ocean. Yacht Captain’s the world over understand the challenges of the South Atlantic and prefer candidates to have this type of exposure and experience prior to employment.

Your commercially endorsed RYA Yachtmaster Offshore license is required by yacht crew agents and sailing charter companies with which we are associated via our partners. Yacht Deckhand’s holding an Offshore (CoC) are considered exceptionally strong candidates and valued assets on any yacht up to MCA OOW Master (yachts less than 3000gt).

Yacht Master Theory & YM Coastal Skipper Practical / Exam Prep and Exam

(Coastal 800nm / Offshore 2500nm required)

This career package is the next step in your qualification and is normally a follow on from the Super Crew Package or Day Skipper Course. Having a yachtmaster qualification on your CV when starting out is 1st prize.

This package is for those who have prevous knowledge in sailing and prefereably hold a Day Skipper\'s qualification.

The courses commences with Yacht Master Theory, in the classroom for 5 days, followed by a 5 day and 4 night Coastal Practical of sailing and staying on the yacht.

The Yacht master Exam Preparation is 10 – 12 days and takes place in Langebaan, due to the tides required for the 1 day Exam. Pre requisites for the exam are 800nm for Yacht Master Coastal and 2500nm for Yachtmaster Offshore.

Deck Hand course 4 days

The Deck Hand course covers maintenance, knowledge and application, wash-downs, teak maintenance, deckhand duties (navigational watch and guests on board), line handling and anchoring duties, etc. Students learn how to assess damage and begin the repair process, starting with damage control and protection of surrounding areas, application of anticorrosive primers and fillers, all the way to applying the Polyurethane Topcoat. Another part of the maintenance section of the course focuses on woodwork and varnishing skills. Protection of surrounding areas, correct taping up, knowledge of sandpaper, sanding with the grain, staying inside taped up areas, correct mixing and applying of the varnish. As an added benefit students also get help with tips on the interview process and creating a CV fit for the industry.

Students stay on the boat during the multi-day practical courses in order to get a real feel for onboard living. A stipend for essentials (tea, coffee, cereal, milk, etc) is included in the course price. During the theory week and STCW, students have the option of staying at our Academy in the Waterfront.

For practical courses we ask that students bring a sleeping bag, towel, toiletries, change of clothes, and suitable wet weather gear. Sunglasses and sunscreenare also a good idea.

For the theory course students will need a 2B pencils, a pen, a notebook and where possible, their own Portland plotter and dividers (we can also loan to the student). We can also help with the purchase of any of these materials.

For STCW you will need your Passport or ID book on day one of your course. You will also need to wear old clothes for the fire fighting (MFF) element, for Personal Safety Training (PST) you will need swimwear, a towel and a set of clothes to get in the pool with.

PRACTICAL sailing courses start with a briefing at the school, 11 Portswood Road at 8.30am.

THEORY courses take place at the school and commence at 8.30am

STCW training takes place in the Cape Town foreshore, training starts promptly at 8.30am

STEWARDESS training takes place in Gordon’s Bay and starts Mondays at 9.00am
