GS 40, the latest wonder from Grand Soleil

Minimal Logo

After the successful GS 44, Grand Soleil goes on to amaze. The latest jewel announced by the Cantiere del Pardo brand, which will have its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022, is the new GS 40 , an extraordinarily fast and responsive yacht with a distinct sporty personality and an elegant, refined style, in line with the other fascinating models Grand Soleil has accustomed us to.

Grand Soleil GS 40

The GS 40, available in the Performance or Race version, boasts a layout that maximizes the volumes of every area, high quality finishes and spaces below deck that have been optimized for top roominess in both the living and dining areas. In short, the new GS 40 has everything it takes to replicate the success of the GS 44, winner of the last ORC world championship, also designed by Mr. Polli, while maintaining the family feeling of the Grand Soleil range between style, elegance, ergonomics and safety. The deck plan of the Performance version is particularly interesting, with four winches as standard, two in the deckhouse and two next to the helms. The self-tacking jib, which is also fitted as standard, has a hanging rail, while the German mainsail sheet point is fixed in the cockpit. Lastly, it is worth noting the position of the mast which, just like on the GS 44 , is set back to maximize the “J” and therefore the base of the headsails. In the Race version, the mast is in carbon fibre and the sail plan has larger proportions than the standard version.

GS interior

“The hull lines of the GS 40 are an evolution of the concept studied for the GS 44, with maximum attention paid to the balance of volumes,” explains architect Polli. “The design brief for the new Grand Soleil 40 is very similar to that of the GS 44, but with the bar set even higher given the smaller size. The 40-foot overall length, one of the most common on the market, presents an even greater challenge in finding the ideal compromise between interior volume and sporty features.

Thanks also to the experience gained on the 44 and to the design team that is now well established, it has been possible to find the perfect combination of performance and comfort. The hull lines are an evolution of the concepts studied for the GS 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volumes as heel increases. The bow lines remain very slender to maintain good performance in light winds and ensure a smooth passage over the wave.

As on the GS 44, a lot of emphasis has been placed on the decidedly backward positioning of the mast, enabling Nauta Design to develop an innovative layout that benefits both performance and comfort. The choice was also made to maintain a very forward single rudder blade centerboard, which I think is ideal for both cruising and racing”.

Grand Soleil 40, Never Change a Winning Team

Grand Soleil 40

The new Grand Soleil 40 aims to replicate the great success of the GS 44 , winner of the last ORC World Championship. Grand Soleil 40 will make the World debut during the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022.

The new Grand Soleil 40, available in the double Performance and Race versions, once again bears the signature of Matteo Polli and Nauta Design , already responsible for the exterior and interior design of the previous Grand Soleil models . The lines of the hull and the naval architecture of the Grand Soleil 40 maintain the strong vocation for performance, but without sacrificing volumes to the advantage of space and comfort on board.

The result of a synergy between Nauta Design (interior & exterior design) and the Shipyard’s Technical Office , which bring a boat with clean and functional layouts into the water in the internal and external areas.

Grand Soleil 40 sailboat

“The design brief for the new Grand Soleil 40 was very similar to that of the GS 44, but with the request to further raise the bar, given the smaller size”, explains Matteo Polli. “The overall length of 40 feet, one of the most common on the market, presents a great challenge in finding a compromise between internal volumes and sporting characteristics. Thanks to the experience gained on the 44 and a well-established team of designers, it was possible to find the perfect combination of performance and comfort. The hull lines are an evolution of the concepts studied for the GS 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volume as the heel increases. The bow profile remains very fine to maintain good performance in light airs and ensure a smooth passage through the waves. As on the GS 44, great importance was placed on the aft positioning of the shaft, enabling Nauta Design to develop an innovative layout and obtaining a benefit on both performance and comfort. It was also chosen to keep a centreboard with a single rudder blade in a very advanced position, a solution that I believe is ideal for both cruising and racing.”

Grand Soleil 40

Grand Soleil 40, the deck

The deck plan of the Grand Soleil 40 Performance version features 4 winches as standard: two in the deckhouse and two next to the wheelhouses. The standard self-tacking jib is equipped with a recessed track, while the German-style mainsheet is fixed in the cockpit. Note the position of the mast which, as on the GS 44 , has a rearward arrangement to allow you to maximize the “J” and therefore the base of the bow sails. Also available in carbon in the Race version, together with a sail plan of increased proportions compared to the standard version.

dufour-520-GL-sail-universe

“We have found the right proportions to have a large and functional deck for both racing and cruising” – explains Massimo Gino of Nauta Design – “where all the lines and deck gear have been studied with the naval architect Matteo Polli and Cantiere del Pardo to find ergonomic positions and solutions, practical and functional for both uses. In light and sleek hull, we were able to include all the necessary functions on a 40 foot boat that also offers comfort and functionality in the interior. From the cabin to the owner’s heads, from the galley to the dinette, the volumes, stowage, and all functions are precise and well balanced. The rich and classic style is the one that has been well tested and appreciated aboard all Grand Soleil’s”.

Grand Soleil 40, the interiors

Below deck, the GS 40 offers two options: in the standard version, there are three cabins and a bathroom to offer more spacious wardrobes and a greater walkway area in the owner’s cabin, while the optional layout includes three cabins and two bathrooms.

First look: Grand Soleil 40 Performance

  • Rupert Holmes
  • June 7, 2022

Rupert Holmes takes a look at the recently announced Grand Soleil 40 Performance, a new performance cruiser from the popular yachting brand

gs 40 sailboat

In recent years there’s been a dearth of new performance cruisers of this size, so this Grand Soleil 40 Performance is a welcome addition to the market. It’s intended to capitalise on the success of the Grand Soleil 44, which won last year’s ORC World Championship, yet has a comfortable and spacious interior. Like the larger boat it’s offered in both Performance and Race versions.

Designer Matteo Polli says the hull lines are “an evolution of the concepts studied for the Grand Soleil 44, giving maximum attention to the balance of volume as heel increases.” Nevertheless, the bow profile has been kept fine by today’s standards to reduce wetted surface area and minimise motion and slamming in a seaway.

The Performance version has a self-tacking jib as standard, while the Race model adds transverse jib sheet tracks, an extra pair of winches and a recessed mainsheet traveller. It also comes with a bowsprit and hydraulic backstay. Both have a single rudder positioned well forward of the disturbed water near the transom.

Three keels are offered – a 2.4m draught with cast iron blade and lead torpedo optimised for IRC racing, a 2.1m version aimed at ORC competition and a 1.85m shoal keel for cruisers who need the flexibility to enter shallow harbours and anchorages.

Interior design and external styling is by Nauta, which has created a spacious three cabin layout, including a large owner’s suite forward with a peninsula bed and plenty of floor space. The port side of the saloon is given over to a 2.6m long linear galley, which has much more stowage and worktop space than is generally associated with performance cruisers of this size. The first example is scheduled to be unveiled at the Cannes boat show in September 2022.

Grand Soleil 40

  • By Stacey Collins
  • Updated: August 27, 2008

If you’ve spent any time sailing in Europe lately, you’re probably familiar with Grand Soleil’s racy performance cruisers. For 30 years, the Italian yard Cantiere del Pardo has built high-quality sailboats designed by the likes of Germán Frers and Judel/Vrolijk & Co. In the same tradition, the new Grand Soleil 40 comes from Botin Carkeek Yacht Design, a Spanish firm whose designs dominate European raceboat circuits.

With a tapered cabin house, uncluttered decks, and elegant Italian interior design, the Grand Soleil 40 has a classic look. Like Botin Carkeek’s raceboats, the hull has a longer waterline, reduced wetted area, and a deep, efficient rudder and keel designed and built based on research by the automaker Ferrari’s aerodynamics department. The hull laminate consists of unidirectional fiberglass and vinylester resin, with a cross-linked PVC foam core called Termanto used above the waterline and in the deck layup.

Bonded inside the hull, an epoxy-coated galvanized-steel grid system absorbs the loads from the chainplates, keel, and mast step. Cruising World’s team of Boat of the Year judges agreed that the boat felt remarkably solid, but we wondered about potential long-term problems with the mild, or low-carbon, steel. Grand Soleil representatives, though, assured me that rust and corrosion don’t become problems over time, and they also pointed out that the entire grid is accessible for inspection by way of screw-held sole panels.

The GS 40 has a sleek and purposeful deck, with halyards and reef lines led aft under the coachroof. Like many new designs, however, cabin-top handrails don’t extend ahead of the mast, so going forward in a blow may be dicey. I did find that the optional teak decking provided excellent traction and the side decks were easy to navigate. With the adjustable genoa tracks tucked against the cabin side, the only potential impediments are the outward-opening ports in the long cabin windows.

Some of the same features that make the boat fast and easy to control also call for vigilance on the part of the crew. The long, low boom maximizes sail area but can be an occasion for head banging, and the convenient location of the Harken traveler-just forward of the wheel-means that a slack mainsheet could foul the binnacle when changing tacks from reach to reach.

Moving around the wide cockpit was easy, but I’d have appreciated foot braces. Our test boat was equipped with only one set of cockpit winches, so the mainsheet led to the cabin top, out of reach of the helm. With a second pair, the double-ended sheet can be led to primaries close to the helm, at either end of the traveler, and that’s an option most owners buy. The 12-inch bridgedeck, required for European Union certification, should do a good job of keeping the interior dry in case of boarding waves. The companionway boards have a neat self-stowing system, but when they’re closed, there’s a finger-width gap underneath, which is something to address before heading offshore.

For such a high-performance boat, the Grand Soleil’s interior is remarkably inviting, with cherry-stained mahogany and a wide-open feel. A choice of one or two heads is offered in the three-cabin layout. The substantial master cabin forward (with optional en-suite head) boasts a queen-size centerline berth. I always climb into berths and turn on the reading lights to see if they’re usable, and the Grand Soleil was up to my test.

In the main saloon, the C-shaped dinette includes a stand-alone bench on centerline, which also provides back bracing for the cook in the in-line galley to port. The countertops have excellent fiddles, but the upper lockers lack any means of restraining the contents. The deep, stainless-steel double sink has an easily accessible seacock that may need to be closed against flooding when the boat’s well heeled on starboard tack. The small, two-burner stove has room to swing if the factory-installed rubber stop is removed; cruising cooks may want to install a stove guardrail.

I find it distressing that many new boats-even those intended for long-distance cruising-have navigation desks unfit for anything but half-size chart kits. Not this boat. While the nav area has lots of extra space in which to add more electronics and a desk ergonomically designed for laptop use, it also has space to spread out a full-size chart. The electrical panel is neatly installed, as are all of the systems, and drip rails under the ports help protect electronics from damage.

Opposite the nav desk is the main head and shower. Twin quarter cabins with standing headroom, hanging lockers, and double berths extend under the cockpit. The split mattresses allow lee cloths to be rigged for use as sea berths. Panels in each cabin and under the companionway ladder provide access to the engine.

On the day we test-sailed the boat, the wind was gusting into the low 30s. We assumed that we’d tuck in a second reef but soon realized it wasn’t necessary. With the genoa partly furled and one reef in the main, the boat felt solid and under control. The standard sails set very nicely when reefed, and steering was a dream.

The Grand Soleil should be a nimble upwind boat: Even in fairly heavy winds, steering through constant puffs with less-than-perfect sail trim, we tacked through 110 degrees while going more than 8 knots. On a reach in 25 knots the G.P.S. showed 7.4 knots speed over ground.

Under power, the 40-horsepower Volvo Penta saildrive and two-bladed folding prop moved the boat smartly at 6.6 knots at 2,500 rpm and 7.6 knots at 2,900 rpm.

The Grand Soleil 40 is seriously fun. After sailing it-and gushing about the exceptional helm, the stability, and the powerful big-boat feel-our team of judges noted the price: $350,000 seemed low for so much boat. For club racing, daysailing, or coastal cruising, the Grand Soleil 40 deserves serious consideration. With a few minor additions and changes and an experienced crew, I wouldn’t hesitate to sail it offshore.

Stacey Collins was a 2008 CW Boat of the Year judge.

Grand Soleil 40, a beautiful sailboat to combine cruising and racing elegance

gs 40 sailboat

The new large Soleil 40 is a must-have for the Italian manufacturer due to its size at the heart of the range. It has the same hull characteristics as its predecessor, the GS 44, launched in 2021, but with a more traditional deck layout. Racing, cruising, the programs are mixed, but always with elegance.

Chloé Torterat

Following in the wake of his big brother

After the success of the Grand Soleil 44 âeuros winner of the last ORC World Championship âeuros the Italian manufacturer of Grand Soleil, Cantiere del Pardo launches a smaller version, inspired by its predecessor, le Grand Soleil 40 . The first boat, whose construction has already begun, will be kept by the shipyard with the objective of winning the ORC championship again in 2023. The second model will be delivered in the Mediterranean. The official presentation will take place in September 2022 in Cannes.

Le Grand Soleil 44 lancé en 2021

Same hull, different deck plan and layout

Like the GS 44, the GS 40 is signed by the naval architect Matteo Polli, the interior and exterior design Nauta Design as the previous models. The hull design is based on the GS 44, with a very thin bow profile. The specifications were similar, the challenge being to do as well or better in a 40-foot unit. The differences are in the deck layout and interior design. On the 44-footer, maneuvers are located aft, near the double helm stations, each with two winches. On the GS 40, the layout is more traditional, with 6 winches (in the Race version): 2 genoa winches, 2 piano winches and 2 mainsail winches, as the size of the boat does not allow for grouping the maneuvers. The double helm configuration is nevertheless kept on the GS 40.

6 winch pour les manoeuvres du bord en version Race, 4 en version Performance

Performance version as standard and Race for more speed

The GS 40 is offered as standard in a performance version and as an option in a race version.

"In the latter, the ballast ratio and sail surfaces are more important, the fittings more dimensioned. The self-tacking jib is replaced by a genoa with a larger overlap. Instead of having a fixed mainsheet, the complete mainsheet track is recessed. The mast and boom can be carbon with a rod rigging, the backstay is hydraulic. This more "regatta" version can be further refined according to the programs: solo, double or crew, IRC, ORCâeuros¦" explains Ghislain Gomiot, Grand Soleil France.

To maximize interior volume, the designers worked on positioning it aft of the shaft line, without compromising performance and comfort. The GS40 is equipped with a monoshaft in a very forward position, a solution adapted to racing and cruising.

Le Grand Soleil 40

A boat for owners who sail

In addition to the performance aspect, the Grand Soleil 40 is equipped for cruising. This is the main program of the boat , even if the owners choose the Race version.

"We have two types of owners. Either people who are looking for performance and a boat that moves forward, or owners who want to participate in a few regattas in the Mediterranean, such as Giraglia, Voiles de Saint-Tropezâeuros¦ In any case, these are people who sail a lot, between 4âeuros000 and 6âeuros000 miles per year" says Ghislain Gomiot.

Le Grand Soleil 40

Two versions of interior design

Two interior layouts are available. In the standard version, three cabins and a shower room in the square on the side of the companionway. As an option, a second shower room can be positioned in the front cabin.

The kitchen has a spacious worktop (2.6 m) with a 75-liter double top opening refrigerator . A 42-liter front-opening refrigerator is available as an option. On the starboard side, the U-shaped saloon is completed with benches around a beautiful table. The chart table is positioned on the starboard side of the companionway.

Aménagement intérieur du Grand Soleil 40

As standard , the draft has been designed from a racing point of view (IRC) with a depth of 2.4 m with a cast iron sail and lead bulb. Two other options are available: 2.1 m for ORC competition and 1.85 m for a shallower draft.

In both versions, a rear platform opens electronically as an option. It is equipped with a swim ladder for boarding and swimming. We will let you know the prices in a while, once they are finalized for France. In total, 5 copies of the Grand Soleil 40 have been sold before the presentation of the boat . THE NEW GS 40

PERFORMANCE

DESIGN, FUN, PERFORMANCE

The new Grand Soleil 40 has all the credentials to replicate the great success of the GS 44, winner of the last ORC World Championship. While maintaining the feeling of style, elegance and safety seen throughout the range. A fast and responsive boat that reflects its sporting personality in the performance on the water. Grand Soleil 40 will be presented in an exclusive World Première during Cannes Yachting Festival 2022.

RELAXATION AND PERFORMANCE, 40 FEET OF GRAND SOLEIL DNA

The winning performance is always at hand on the new GS 40. The deck plan of the Performance version includes 4 winches as standard: two on the coachroof and two next to the helm positions. The self-tacking jib, also as standard, is equipped with a recessed track, while the mainsheet is positioned to a fixed point in the cockpit. A boat that is easy to use, luxurious and at the same time competitive in it’s performance.

RACE, THE LEGACY OF A WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RANGE

The Race version amplifies the competitive potential of a boat already geared to racing. In this version the deck plan has been adapted to optimize sail performance, including the addition of 2 winches, race bowsprit, a hydraulic backstay, jib tracks in transverse position and a recessed mainsail track. The standard draft is already designed from a racing point of view (IRC) with a depth of 2.4 meters, cast iron blade and lead torpedo. Also available on the GS 40 are two other keel options: the first 2.1 meters optimized for ORC competitions, the second shallow draft of only 1.85 meters. Both the race and performance versions include a stern platform that can be opened electronically, equipped with a ladder for easy boarding to the swim platform.

HIGH QUALITY FINISHES AND TIMELESS DESIGN

Going below deck you enter a luxurious and fresh space, always functional in its details. Wide, practical, efficient interiors both for cruising use and for moving with agility during regattas. The interior has also been designed to maximize the space between the living and galley areas. Relaxation and comfort for the owner and their guests when cruising can also meet the needs of the regatta sailors.

European 40s

The field at last year’s Boat of the Year Awards competition (see SW Dec./Jan. ’03/’04 ) included several 40-something footers. They all couldn’t win awards, but that didn’t mean there weren’t several damn good boats. Two of these deserving recognition were the Grand Soleil 40 and the Elan 40 (the later won Cruising World’s Best Performance Boat award, both European-built and designed, and both with easily traced raceboat heritage. Grand Soleil 40 The Grand Soleil design philosophy has been to build one-off raceboats, see how they go, then use the knowledge gleaned from a year of hard campaigning on the European circuit to design and build a fast production boat that will race well and be reasonably comfortable downstairs. After sailing their 40-footer, we can say that the theory not only makes sense, but works well. We sailed the Grand Soleil 40 on a day when not many other boats came out to play; a cold front had brought winds that gusted well over 35 knots. Nevertheless, when it was time for our test sail, the GS 40 was waiting for us, tacking back and forth in front of the Naval Academy with two reefs in the main and the genoa rolled in partway. Our first impression on getting aboard was that the 5’3″ diameter Solimar wheel felt good, and the foot blocks were in the perfect spot. We averaged 7 knots during our sail, and thanks to the 6’10” rudder, we never spun out or broached; rather the boat just squirted ahead when the big puffs hit. BOTY judge and multihull aficionado, Meade Gougeon declared that the GS 40 was the best monohull he’d ever steered. The cockpit had room for the seven of us sailing that day. The seats are contoured, with raised edges, and the portside locker is large enough to store bricked sails. It was no problem for BOTY judge Chuck Allen to access the rudder quadrant and get at the steering cables, something we tested on each boat. The deck hardware and winches are Harken, and the solid vang by Bamar worked well during our spinnaker-less downwind legs. All control lines and halyards led aft to the cockpit and its four winches. Two additional winches for the main trimmer are optional, but would be priceless necessities for buoy racing. The roller-furling drum for the headsail is built by Facnor. Lifeline stanchions mounted inboard of the toe rail won’t be popular with crews or skippers, as they lend some difficulty and discomfort when hiking, and you can’t get your weight out as far as you could were the stanchions mounted outboard. Designed by Massimo Papperini and built by the Cantiere del Pardo yard in Forli, Italy, the hull is solid glass with vinylester and the deck is cored with foam. The standard mast, which is an aluminum rig by Sparcraft, uses wire rigging and steps on the keel. The keel is solid lead, and the rudder has a solid steel stock and steel webbing. The GS 40’s core strength comes from a built-in structural grid composed of ribs, bulkheads, and longitudinal stringers around the keel and mast step amidships. There are two and three-cabin versions available, the main difference being another head forward and an extra cabin aft under the portside cockpit seat in the three-cabin version. The fuel filters for the 40-horsepower Yanmar diesel, which powers a Saildrive unit, are easy to access. At presstime there are boats in inventory on the East Coast of the United States for $249,000; a new boat’s price will depend on the fluctuating value of the dollar versus the Euro. If you want a full-on race version, a GS 40R, with rod rigging, carbon rig, SCRIMP hull, and a 7’10” keel is available. Elan 40 The Elan company may be more familiar to Americans as a manufacturer of skis, but across the street from their ski manufacturing facility in Begunjie, Slovenia, is a boatbuilding plant that’s been producing boats for 40 years. We had the pleasure of sailing the Elan 40, a Rob Humphreys (Kingfisher, GBR Challenge) design in a 16-knot breeze. The deck gear is a mix of Harken and Lewmar, with a Furlex furler for the headsail. The rig is an aluminum Selden section popular with European builders, and, with the performance package we sailed, equipped with rod rigging and Spectra halyards. The boat has a split backstay with a hydraulic adjuster on the port side. The main sheet is set up grand-prix style, running down from near the gooseneck, which is handy when you need the sail pumped or pulled in quick for a jibe. As with the GS 40, all halyards are led to an organizer forward of the companionway. Behind the traveler, which is raised and runs between the cockpit seats, the stainless steel wheel mounts on a binnacle with room for instruments. The helmsman’s seat tilts forward for easy boarding through the open transom, which incorporates a handy swim platform/man overboard recovery area. And yes, the bow roller can easily be removed. The Elan 40’s hull is solid fiberglass, the deck cored with balsa. The keel is solid iron fin with a lead bulb, and draws 6’9″. We hit 7.2 knots upwind with the optional 155-percent genoa, and the boat felt solid and tracked nicely. When we did take a blast, the rudder gave plenty of warning before an actual stall-and recovered instantly once the main traveler was eased. Downwind in 17 knots true, sailing under spinnaker, the boat felt on edge and the cockpit a tad crowded during jibes, but we hit speeds between 7.7 to 8.2 knots; the trade-offs are well worth the performance. This is a boat that won’t take long to get used to, and will reward a competent driver. The first thing you notice as you go below are the two handholds in the companionway; somebody had their offshore thinking cap on. The fit and finish below is excellent, especially if you order the upgraded (more wood) interior. There are two different cabin versions, with the only difference being a head in the forward berth in one version. There are two cabins aft under the cockpit benches, both with closets. The J-shaped galley is to starboard, opposite that, the head. The nav station is at max beam, and faces forward. The electronics panel is well laid out and easy to get behind, but there’s only a small space left for instruments, and no cabinetwork directly forward of the desk itself where you’d like to put a display screen. With the IRC measurement rule heading for the States, it’s good to know that an Elan 40 won the British National IRC Class 2 in 2002, and you can own one for $215,000. Both the Elan and the Grand Soleil 40 demonstrate a trend in European boatbuilding towards good looking racer/cruisers that race well, so if you’re in the market, do yourself a favor and sail each. Interesting Sailboats

Friday, march 11, 2022, new grand soleil 40.

gs 40 sailboat

Regarding racing, despite a 3rd place in the 2014 European ORC championship, the GS39 was not a popular boat, and the offshore racing performance was not as good as the inshore one, in traditional around the cans regattas and they never raced any of the classic big offshore regattas.

It is not by accident but follows the modern tendency for always beamier boats with bigger interiors, a tendency that is not so marked in performance cruisers, but that is noticeable even there.

gs 40 sailboat

Of course, I am talking about performance yachts with a balanced performance (upwind, beam reaching, and downwind) because if we look at fast boats maximized for downwind and beam reaching, like the Pogo 12.50 (40.0ft), we can see they are beamier, the Pogo with a huge 4.5m beam,  the Pogo 44 comparatively less beamy with the same beam for a bigger yacht (42ft length).

gs 40 sailboat

However, those 95m2 are optional, and the standard sail area is only 84m2. With only 2m2 of sail area (in the standard version) I doubt the 40, in low medium winds will be faster. Only with stronger winds, when the 39 needs to reef, and the 40 can continue with full sail area, the 40 will be faster.

It will offer a progressive increase in hull form stability with heeling, which will more than compensate for drag increase.

gs 40 sailboat

In regards to racing, being the 40 designed by Matteo Polli, a specialist in ORC with several world titles, I have few doubts that it will be competitive, if with all options that contribute to making it faster. They call it race version, but in fact, only with all those extras, the 40 will be a cruiser-racer.

Faster, easier to sail and with a bigger cruising interior, the 40 is a better design than the 39, even if I would like it to be even faster, losing some beam and weight and a biggerB/D, I would say 6500kg for a 3.90 beam and a 40-45%B/D. But of course, that would make it more expensive and with a smaller interior and that would mean a faster boat, but one that would sell less and one that in handicap racing could be less competitive.

gs 40 sailboat

We can complain that in the basic and cheaper version the standing rigging is too simplified and besides 4 winches (instead of 6) it has no boom traveler, no genoa traveler, but if you don't want to spend time tuning correctly the sails, you can enjoy a fast hull, with an easy and very simplified running rigging, without paying for more expensive sail hardware.

gs 40 sailboat

But for the ones that want more storage space, it seems there is not a two-cabin version and what is proposed is a three-cabin version with the forward head turned into a storage space, a space that will not be very useful due to the location and shape, except to carry a gennaker.

gs 40 sailboat

When it is on the water and after a visit, I will make a comparison with the X4-0 and the Solaris 40, which seem to be the two main market competitors.

Paulo: Look, our dream boat is for sale! For this price if I had the money I would buy it today! https://www.yachtworld.com/yacht/2009-le-breton-sig-45-7694147/

gs 40 sailboat

Hi Pedro, You know, even dream boats have to make sense in what regards price, if one thinks in buying it. This used SIG45 with VAT, that is needed in Europe, would cost between 474 000 and 485 850 euros, depending on the VAT's country. That's for a 13 year old yacht. A new Salona 46 costs new with VAT 362 850 Euros (with the higher VAT), Sure it needs a lot of extras, but the difference in price (123 000 euros) will allow for a new well equipped boat, for the same price. If I had the money I would have the Salona instead. A 13 year old boat needs a lot of maintenance, starting by a new rig for the mast, and many other things. I know, I bought a 5 year's old boat some years back, now it has 15 years and the maintenance bills don't stop to increase, year after year. And are not only the bills, it is annoying to have to think and to do maintenance. Some don't mind, well, I like more to sail. So, yes, I would have a Sig 45....but a new one, if I was a billionaire and did not care about money, never a 13 year's old used one, even if I could afford it. If i could afford that kind of money, I would buy a new boat, or an almost new boat, not a 13 year old boat for a fortune.
