Lovely location, got an upgraded room. All over a good stay.

Location, being different rather than your standard hotel, staff were excellent and friendly, breakfast was good

This is a luxury hotel with spacious, light rooms. It was comfortable and clean with helpful and friendly staff. Breakfast was great and the tube stations is literally opposite the yacht. We could also walk to the cable car within 5 minutes which took us to the O2 for our evening out.

Staff were friendly and very helpful, beautiful. My partner had his 50th birthday and he had a fantastic time

Absolutely stylish and stunning looking yacht. The views are amazing to look out from. To have an afternoon tea or to go for a evening meal or to actually stay on the yacht is an experience. Most definitely 5 stars. From receptionist to bar staff to waiters to even the cleaners everyone is accomadating. Our afternoon tea and evening meal and breakfast I most definitely could not fault at all. The cleanliness was outstanding as constantly cleaners didn't stop. For parking. I'm disabled and there is parking litterly right outside yacht.

Breakfast was very nice, staff very friendly, room was nice

Loved the novelty factor of staying on a boat, and it was a great location for me and my bedroom was lovely and big. All staff were really friendly.

The room was lovely (executive room) with a balcony looking out to the water. The Lands End Restaurant was fantastic. We had a table with a wonderful view jf the O2 and cable cars and the Lonfon skyline, the service, food and ambiance were wonderful.

Excellent location with good access to wider London

A new £25 million super yacht will host parties and dinners on the Thames

Oceandiva London is launching this autumn

Chiara Wilkinson

Later this year, you might spot a shiny new vessel gliding down the Thames. And no, we’re not talking about another Uber boat.

Due to arrive in the capital in August before officially launching in autumn, Oceandiva London is a massive £25 million super yacht that will soon take the title of London’s largest floating venue.

The 86-metre-long three-deck ship will have space for 1,500 guests,  hosting dinners, receptions, product launches and more.  It will be moored at the Royal Docks and guests will be able to hop on at London Bridge, Canary Wharf, Greenwich, ExCel and Tower Bridge, depending on the event.

Artist impressions of how the boat will look show a long, sleek vessel in a matte grey colour, with a Union Jack flag protruding from the upper deck:

Back angle of a boat

Oceandiva  is a Dutch-founded company that already has ships operating in Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. It claims that its London vessel will be a CO₂-neutral venue, powered by lithium battery packs backed up by mounted solar panels.

The Evening Standard reported that events company Smart Group have opened up bookings, with hire rates starting from an eye-watering basic of £27,000 a night.

The Lucky Club is opening a rooftop bar in Camden this May .

Yacht Charter River Thames

Guide to sailing on the river thames.

From the busy tidal estuary in Kent and Essex to the buzzing fun of Central London or the quieter reaches of the Upper Thames above Teddington Lock, a River Thames yacht charter is as different in terms of boating from end to end.

Build your own unique trip!

London itself has been a port of sorts since the dawn of civilsation. The Romans overwhelmed the Britons who often fought back with Queen Boudicca famously burning the city to the ground. Castles and Palaces line the river from the Tower of London to the seat of power Westminster Palace, Greenwich Palace (on the East/West Greenwich Meridian) and then further upriver, Hampton Court Palace and Royal Family's residence at Windsor Castle.

Beyond Britain's faded glory of old, the Thames is still one of the UK's most important waterways. Dozens of river and canals feed into it from the River Lea in the east to the Grand Union canal in the City that combined give it waterborne links to much of the South East and even the West Midlands. It is even possible to take a narrowboat all the way from the city to the Bristol Channel and the mighty River Severn in the west of England via the Kennet and Avon Canal that joins at Reading.

From partying into the night to hair raising speedboat rides, to a night or two on a Thames barge or just pottering through the quiet countryside in rural Oxfordshire, a River Thames yacht charter could mean any number of things. Let's explore these below.

Explore the River Thames By Renting A Boat

There are three effective zones on the Thames where you can explore the breadth and depth of Britain's most important river.

From the Thames Barrier to Teddington Lock, Central London is a boat charter zone where it is best to leave the sailing itself to a pro. That means you can enjoy a sightseeing cruise with the views and sounds of one of the world's greatest capitals that has been around since the dawn of civilisation without having to worry which arch you should be passing under and dealing with the rebounding boats' and ships' washes from the embankment in what can be tricky tidal currents!

Perhaps on a party boat with champagne flowing or on a luxury yacht charter in Central London you can concentrate on the fun to be had and enjoy the sights and sounds of one of the world's greatest capitals, embarking and disembarking on one of the Port of London's main pier embarkation and disembarkation points.

Teddington Lock to Reading can still be done in luxury and comfort, perhaps having your wedding reception afloat as you pass Windsor Castle and Hampton Court Palace, taking in relics of Britain's great past.

This section, past Marlow, Henley and on up to Oxford and the West of England may be considered the Upper Thames. From Teddington west the waterway depth is protected by the lock and this means that the amateur boatman or sailor can more competently take a bareboat cruiser charter upriver.

On lower stretches of the Upper Thames you can sail on a luxury yacht charter Thames barge for many miles of the Thames river. These are old wide beam cargo ships that take passengers and are comfortably fitted out throughout and offer very good hospitality. There are many opprtunities to hire a crewed boat or luxury yacht as a venue for a Christmas party or wedding reception - or just a post-lockdown disco cruise with your friends! Like the Central Londonparty boat charters we discussed above you can have 60 guests with you for an event that will remain in memory for a long time to come.

The third zone is the upper reaches of the Thames as well as the Kennet and Avon Canal where you can potter along the waterways on a narrowboat or luxury boat for a day or a week's boating holiday in a far less frenetic environment.

How To Get To the River Thames

One of the longest rivers in the UK, the Thames runs past some of the most important road, rail and air links in the country.

Tube: For a Central London party boat or dining cruise you can access a pier for the start of the cruise in locations including the Embankment and Pool of London. These are a short walk from the Tube.

The West London boroughs of Richmond and Teddington are both on the District Line of the Tube, with an Overground train station also at Richmond.

Rail: London's major railway stations connect to destinations all over the UK and via St Pancras to Europe via the Eurotunnel.

Road: Much of the Upper Thames lies on the M4 corridor with good road links to Reading, Windsor, Oxford, Marlowand Henley.

Marinas on the Thames River

As Britain's second longest river, the Thames has a large number of marinas, piers and docks that cater to everything from narrowboat, to motor yacht and even luxury yacht and party boat for everything from a private charter boatingholiday to a night of hedonism and fun.

Here are some highlights.

West London's Shepperton Marina has 400 berths catering to all sizes of yacht in four basins and provides easy access to the non-tidal river above Teddington Lock. From here you can start your boating holiday leaving London afloat instead of by other more traditional modes of transport.

A couple of miles from the M3/M25 interchange and close to Staines-on-Thames Penton Hook Marina is Britain's largest inland marina with 525 berths. For those looking for an inland waterway boating holiday that begins close to Central London, this is an ideal starting off point.

Further upriver you can start your Thames boat charter out of the 175 berth Windsor Marina that has all the facilities you need for to begin a perfect boat holiday.

Henley-on-Thames has Hambleden Marina and Henley Marina while Reading's Thames and Kennet Marina has narrowboat and even luxury boat holidays on which you can explore routes through Oxfordshire and even Wiltshire.

Suggested Sailing Routes on the River Thames

The Thames river was for many years both the gateway to the British Empire and an inland waterway link to cities as far afield as Bristol and even Worcester! What do you want from a River Thames yacht charter? Here we suggest a good option for a private boat hire on the Upper Thames but there are any number of other opportunities from a speedboat ride through Central London to a Christmas party or even getting married afloat with your wedding receptionaboard too.

Windsor - Reading - 7 Days: From the historic town of Windsor you can take your private charter or family charterboat up past the tows of Maidenhead and Marlow to the twee town of Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous rowing boat regatta. Reading at the mid-point of the cruise is a buzzing commuter town with a variety of top restaurants and excellent nightlife. For the next three days you return downriver.

Best Times To Hire A Yacht on the River Thames

The boating season runs from late April to mid September on the UK inland waterways, though you will see hardier types afloat throughout the year. Unlike the Solent, it never gets frantic on the water Upper Thames or Kennet & Avon Canal though it is a popular place for boat owners to keep their craft. A canal or riverboat charter can be done at any time through the year and you can expect a place to eat at a pub and a mooring without having to book too early or plan too far ahead.

Sailing Weather on the Thames River

April and May: Westerlies prevail but you will often find warm days with brisk sailing conditions of a F4-5. Gales will come through earlier in the year. This is Britain - expect rain!

June-August: In June there will be southerly and westerly gales at times but these tend to die out in July and August with the Azores High moving north and providing settled conditions and light easterlies. Expect temperatures in the high 20s C range with the odd few days at 30C plus. As ever, keep your oilies to hand as even in the height of summer things can change.

September-October: Grey skies and gales start to return. While often in the high teens Celsius in September with some great sailing conditions, the westerly procession of lows start coming up the English Channel and things can get a little uncomfortable by early October.

The main points to consider are what is your budget, have you got the necessary sailing experience and qualifications to manage the boat if it's not going to have a skipper, whom you are taking sailing, where exactly you wish to go and what will the weather be like on the proposed dates of your trip.

There are dozens of marinas on the River Thames from Kent to Oxfordshire. Just outside of the M25 and near Staines-on-Thames is the largest inland marina in the UK, Penton Hook Marina with over 500 berths. Inside the M25 in West London is Shepperton Marina with 400 berths - both cater to everything from narrowboat to motor yacht to luxuryyacht private boat hire.

May to August is best for sailing, though it can get very busy. If you take a River Thames boat charter outside of these times it won't be as busy, though at the end of June and the first week of July the Royal Henley Regatta can be at least as busy as Cowes on the Solent at Cowes Week - another important high society event!

You will typically pay 50% up front on booking the yacht hire and the balance on arrival. You will either pay a security deposit with your credit card on departure or can get insurance covering damage in advance. In some cases (such as the recent Covid situation) charter companies may be more flexible but this depends on the individual charter companies themselves.

If you are at sea and in danger, call MAYDAY on VHF Ch16 or ring the coast guard on your phone if you have reception. If you have a mechanical fault and can make it to or are on a mooring you will be able to phone a help line number given by the boat charter company.

Unless you are experienced on the lower reaches of the River Thames around Central London it is wise to avoid sailingon the tidal reaches below Teddington Lock. This even applies to experienced sailors London is a busy port that has bylaws that are in addition to the Collision Regulations. On the Upper Thames navigation is a lot quieter and simpler - you only need basic training to sail safely.

If you want to sail on the lower Thames without a skipper then you will need relevant qualifications like RYA Day Skipper/International Certificate of Competence (ICC)/ASA 104 Bareboat certificate or the US Sailing Certificate. On the upper Thames, for small 'day boats' or if you choose to have a skippered on board your yacht charter you typically don't require licences.

What did you get up to? We visited the Sunborn Yacht Hotel for an overnight stay and 3 course meal, as part of my wife’s 40th birthday celebrations. We travelled into the city by train and jumped on the underground to Custom House, where the boat is moored on the Thames. On arrival at the quayside, you get the instant sensation that this is not going to be your average hotel stay, as you are greeted by the 120m Sunborn super yacht in all its glistening glory! Once on board, we were welcomed by friendly staff and given the keys to our room. The inside of the boat is just as spectacular as the outside, with a grand staircase and chandeliers dominating the main reception area. Our beautiful king-size room had its own private balcony overlooking the Thames and the city, which gave us an opportunity to relax and take in the sights before dinner. Dinner was booked for 8pm, so once we had changed into our glad rags, we made our way to the bar for a pre-dinner drink. The restaurant is situated at the top of the grand staircase, which gives you a great opportunity to take a few snaps next to the chandeliers on your way up! Our 3 course meal was absolutely lovely, I had the steak and Emma had the corn fed Chicken, accompanied by a few glasses of fizz! We have 2 kids, so we took advantage of a full night’s sleep in our super comfy king sized bed! In the morning, we decided to explore the boat and as the evening rain had cleared we were able to get out onto the sun decks and have a coffee. Our stay also included a full English breakfast, which was fantastic and filled us up for our planned day in the city. Overall, we had a great restful break away and could not fault the staff, accommodation and food. The Sunborn offers a unique way to stay in city and offers a bit of the wow factor, especially when celebrating a special occasion. We would definitely recommend it and would love to return! What did you enjoy the most? Our favourite part of the experience the 3 course meal. The restaurant setting was amazing overlooking the city lights and the food was top class, which made Emma’s birthday celebrations extra special.

Top Tip 1. Bring a camera! 2. Remember your glad rags! 3. Take advantage of the sights and lights of London, why not take in a west end show during your stay!

Hydrogen powered propulsion is coming to the Thames

How decarbonising a london icon may outline a template for the superyacht sector to hit its targets….

Image for article Hydrogen powered propulsion is coming to the Thames

SuperyachtNews Speaks exclusively with Ivo Veldhuis, technical manager of Mayfair Marine, as the project picks up speed after securing funding from the UK Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition, and as Veldhuis explains:

'It's not about designing a boat, it's about designing a complete transport system'

The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers fleet is an iconic part of the London cityscape. Its high-speed catamarans slice between stops and under bridges year-round. But there is a change imminent. The Clean Maritime Act states that as of 2025: 'All new vessels being ordered for use in UK waters are being designed with zero-emission propulsion capability.' As the industry strives for a sustainable future, this project and its protagonists link to the superyacht industry and may provide a template for the marine sector to reach its decarbonisation targets.

With a current fleet of 21 running on various conventional diesel propulsion systems and capable of speeds up to 30 Knots, the fuel consumption of the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers vessels is in the millions of litres per year; the next generation of the Thames fleet will need a radical change. And, it is hoped, hydrogen will provide an emissions-free platform for the next generation of Uber Boat by Thames Clippers to handle an expected doubling of passenger numbers by 2030, increasing from four to eight million per year in this time.

The first step in this change is a feasibility study. Mayfair Marine, working with DNV for regulatory support and One2three naval architects, will present 12 parametric concepts in 2022 that will balance the benefits and drawbacks of various configurations of three forms of hydrogen storage; Cryogenic, Pressurised and Methanol. Each has its own specific set of design considerations and, crucially, differing infrastructure networks to support its use, a hurdle that is often seen as restricting the broad application of hydrogen fuel cells in the superyacht industry.

As Veldhuis explains, it's not as simple as just buying a suitable vessel. "My feeling is, when presenting a proposal for something like this, you have to convey why you want to be a zero-emission company and what it means to you. It's easy to say, 'Ok, we are going to buy a zero-emission vessel'. But if you approach a shipyard like this, sure, they will build one for you, but it will be the vessel that they think you need, that is not good enough to make a zero-emission system like this work."

The complexities of the Thames showcases the layered issues that the project will have to consider. With draft restrictions come weight considerations, and as in any hydrogen fuel cell system, there will still be significant battery banks to act as a capacitor for acceleration and sudden changes in load. And, as many naval architects are grappling with in their quest for zero-emission yachts, these batteries are very heavy. Support from a forward-thinking classification society will be necessary, as Veldhuis anticipates, "DNV being obviously one of the foremost when it comes to hydrogen and fuel cells which helps because we want to push the technical envelope on this project."

Then there is the issue of hydrogen supply and transfer. As yet ill-defined by regulators, the guidance will need to keep pace. Veldhuis and his team see the best way to get results is with a combined approach. As we speak, it becomes clear that Veldhuis does not see this as simply a case of designing a high-speed passenger transport vessel. "The way we have treated this is from a complete transport system perspective, of which the boat is just one part. The fuel infrastructure, awareness of where the hydrogen is coming from, the passenger journey, all of these factors together make up the complete transport system." As Veldhuis clarifies, a system only works when complete. If a certain storage system for hydrogen is identified as being preferred through the feasibility study, then the network to support it can be built around that. Waiting for the hydrogen supply and then building a vessel to match is reactionary.

super yacht thames

The first iteration of a zero-emission Uber Boat by Thames Clipper, once on the water, will feedback into the system a detailed stream of position and performance data that will guide the design modifications on the next, to optimise the system and increase the efficiency. Not only because of the environmental considerations but because, as Veldhuis reminds me, it is a business and must operate as such. Hydrogen remains at least as expensive, if not slightly more than diesel, and the consumer's enthusiasm for green transport will be tested if the price increases drastically.

The broader implications for the superyacht industry are manifold. While some early adopters of hydrogen technologies have been promising, it is hard to imagine it as a systematic approach. This project is developing as a case study for the superyacht industry's adoption of alternative fuels. As Veldhuis highlights, this has to be tackled as a collective issue. "The redesigning of the system is ambitious, and this is where the superyacht industry can take reference. The superyacht industry needs more system thinking. People are saying, 'If the marinas don't sell hydrogen, why I should build one?' Well, why don't owners group together to build the hydrogen infrastructure and then build their yachts?"

The operational profile of these high-speed vessels is vastly different to the typical superyacht; the water jet is not the most efficient propulsion system for most superyachts, for example. However, the concept of developing and presenting a systemwide approach, re-evaluating the fundamentals of design in the name of efficiency, and front footing the hydrogen supply network may be a pivotal step to accelerate the transition to an emissions-free future for the superyacht industry.

Inside Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie’s £240million superyacht with helipad and gold art as it docks in UK

A MULTI-MILLION pound superyacht has been spotted cruising into the Thames yesterday as its owner prepares to dock it in London.

Superyacht Kaos, belonging to Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie, is worth £241million, and boasts a jaw dropping interior.

The yacht was seen sailing towards London this morning near Kent

The vessel was seen sailing near Sheerness this morning as stunned passer-bys filmed the mammoth ship.

The yacht was built in 2017 by Oceanco, the same company which made Jeff Bezos £400million super yacht.

Photos of the yacht reveal a stunning interior, fit with a full swimming pool, dining area and room for a smaller boat.

The lounge area has gold ceilings, with dark wood features and marble bathrooms.

At 271feet, it's smaller than its sister ship Kaos, but equally as stunning.

The gold wall art is a far cry from the muted tones of Kaos, but fits the luxury of Laurie's lifestyle.

Heated bathroom floors are a standard on the yacht, and the master has two en suite bathrooms.

The boat also has a glass elevator, 12-person cinema , and onboard massage parlor.

It even has a bar inside called "The London bar", featuring smoke machines, a DJ booth and water wall chandelier.

Coincidentally, Laurie's superyacht Kaos is estimated to dock in the city of London later this afternoon.

Laurie is the youngest daughter of Bud Walton, who's brother Sam began what would become the world's largest retail store.

The first-ever  Walmart  store opened in July 1962 in  Arkansas , and the heirs own around 50 percent of the stock collectively.

Also that year, the Walton family took a huge financial hit after Walmart's share price plummeted by 10 percent in 2022.

The fall in shares due to the company's sale of its operations in the UK and  Japan  and a cut in profit expectations, saw the heirs lose over $27billion.

£240 million super yacht as long as St Paul's Cathedral 'blocks' River Thames

The boat is longer than the Thames is wide in some places

A yacht as long as St Paul's Cathedral is tall has come to London, and it's causing quite the controversy. Kaos, which was built in 2017 by the same company that created Jeff Bezos' gargantuan boat, was spotted on the Thames yesterday.

The 110-metre long boat (ship? cruise? colossus?) arrived in London from Miami on May 25. In ridiculous scenes posted to Reddit , Kaos was seen spanning the entire width of the Thames.

"The Thames is now closed," the Londoner who captured the photo joked alongside it. And understandably, others were less than thrilled at the gigantic apparition on the water.

Another person said "Everyone should line up along the bank to throw rocks at it to be honest." A third added: "Please someone just sink that thing."

Kaos is owned by Nancy Walton Laurie, the heiress to American shop chain Walmart. She acquired it around 2018 for the eye-watering sum of €275million, which is roughly £240million.

The boat boasts a full-size swimming pool, gold ceilings, marble bathrooms, an aquarium, a cinema, and a spa, according to The Sun . There's also a glass lift and a helipad, obviously.

According to marine tracker Marine Traffic , Kaos is currently moored just off Shad Thames, to the east of Tower Bridge. It was previously moored in Horta, Portugal.

A billionaire's yacht stunned Londoners when it sailed up the River Thames and moored close to the iconic Tower Bridge.

The yacht reportedly turned up over the weekend and while some ogled at its scale, others slammed its presence amid a cost-of-living crisis as "insensitive", My London reports.

Posting a picture of the boat on Reddit, one person wrote: "Seriously, this thing showed up this morning and is moored right by Tower Bridge. It's the biggest boat I have seen here, any idea who owns it?"

One person replied: "Sorry but not me as I can barely afford heating, so how the heck do you expect me to own a million dollar super boat?"

Kismet pictured on her way to London cruising the River Thames

It transpires the boat, named 'Kismet', is owned by billionaire Shahid Khan, who also owns Fulham Football Club. Shahid bought the club from former owner Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013.

The Pakistani-American tycoon also owns NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars will be in the capital on October 30 to play against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium, perhaps explaining why his boat is moored on the Thames.

The boat is said to currently be on sale for the cost of 169 million euros, or more than £140million.

Not everyone was happy to see it docked in London. One said: "Waiting for Just Stop Oil to spray paint it as well. Would be brilliant."

Another commented: "Think you should never show off such extravagance in a city with homeless people on the street."

Saying that, some Londoners claim they've seen better. "Gone are the Russian mega mega yachts, now come the toddlers," said one. "I mean, does this even have a helipad or two?"

Kismet, which means "fate" or "destiny" in Urdu, was built in 2014 and sails under the flag of Cayman Islands. It has its own swimming pool on board.
