Glide Like the Wind: Iceboat Sailing

WRITER | MATT DAVIDSON PHOTO | BILL CUTTING

Iceboat sailing, also known as ice yacht sailing, has been a popular winter pastime for many who relish the feel of the wind taking hold of their sails and propelling them across the frozen surface of a lake at breakneck speeds.

The sport began in northern Europe in the late 1700s as something for all to enjoy during the long winter months. By the 18 th century, it had made the jump to the United States. Ice yacht sailing was all the rage along the frozen rivers and lakes of the Northeast, with the Hudson River serving as the sport’s main base of operations. The iceboats of this period were made of wood and their sails of canvas, and they were embraced by all economic groups. From the late 1800s to mid-1930s, however, the sport became more of a hobby for the very rich, with ice yachts reaching lengths of 70 feet and some as finely appointed as the stateliest rooms of the time.

Peter Sarelis, current member and former Commodore of the Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club , explained how modern ice yacht sailing has once again become a sport that anyone can enjoy.

“In the 1930s, the Detroit News held a contest seeking an affordable design for an iceboat that could be assembled from a kit by your average person in their backyard. This is how the DN Class of ice yacht came to be.” He went on to say, “The DN Class is highly portable, with a hull that is 12 feet long and a plank that is 8 feet wide. The 16-foot mast can be transported right on top of your vehicle; most minivans are capable of transporting a DN to your lake of choice.”

There are iceboating clubs spread across Michigan, and there are many different breeds of sailor within those clubs. Some enthusiasts have ice yachts made of high-tech alloys created through state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. These boats are capable of skimming across the ice at speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour. Others ply the frozen waters in rugged boats capable of plowing through snow drifts; these powerhouses obviously don’t require the mirror-like ice conditions that some others do.

Sarelis described the optimum conditions for iceboating. “You need at least 4, preferably 5 inches of hard clear ice with little to no snow cover for prime conditions on the course. With the amount of snowfall we receive, it often requires you to remain on standby, ready to go as the lakes become ready.”

Bill Cutting of the Grand Traverse Ice Yacht Club described ice yacht enthusiasts by saying, “We’re a wayward bunch of eclectic friends who chase optimum ice conditions wherever they may lead us. We spend a lot of time hanging out together on the ice in the cold, waiting for the right wind. It’s definitely a sport for hardy souls. You end up becoming good friends with such a diverse group of people from all walks of life.”

Cutting went on to say, “We welcome the public to come check us out and see what iceboating is all about. We have meetings beginning in October where we get together and discuss everything to do with the sport; most members love sharing what they know in hopes of attracting new participants. We also keep our Facebook page updated with planned upcoming events.”

Cutting described participants as nomadic when chasing the perfect ice conditions. “Different lakes have good ice at different times in the winter; we go where the ice is. In the Lower Peninsula, Houghton Lake, Lake Skegemog, and Birch Lake are some of the early ones to hit before heavy snow makes conditions less than stellar. Club members travel all over the state and northern Midwest, with Government Bay, St. Martin Bay, and Munuscong Bay in the Upper Peninsula often drawing groups of iceboaters.”

Each year, enthusiasts from across the state and the world get together for a yearly regatta, which is a mix between highly competitive racing and the friendly atmosphere of a family reunion. Last year’s event was held on Lake Charlevoix; this year’s venue is yet to be decided. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend. To learn more about the sport, contact your local ice yacht club or check out their Facebook page.

Sailors seek thrills in freezing temperatures sailing iceboats across frozen lakes

Looking similar to a sailboat, these winter rides travel over the ice at high speeds. No motor, no keel, no inhibitions.

The art of ice boating is a tradition that has been around since the 1600s when old sailboats would be fitted with blades to help ship goods across the frozen canals of the Netherlands.

Now the sport is a largely recreational undertaking that draws a small, tight-knit group of enthusiasts onto frozen water bodies each year when winds are gusting and bare ice turns lakes into a venue for what seems like an unlikely endeavor — winter sailing.

There are multiple ice yacht clubs across Michigan, including the Detroit Ice Yacht Club, West Michigan Ice Yacht Club and Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club. The Gull Lake Club has an 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 event Iceboats on the Bay in Richland, near Battle Creek.

There is Facebook group called Iceboating in Michigan and Ohio  for those interested in the sport, featuring posts ice conditions, upcoming events and places where people use boats.

Ice boating is said to have been introduced to North America in the late 18th century when a crude ice boat was taken onto the Hudson River in New York by Dutch settlers.

Among the more popular iceboats are the DN, the largest iceboat class. It''s name comes from a 1937 Detroit News-sponsored design contest to come up with a design for an affordable, home buildable iceboat to provide winter entertainment during the depression.

An ice boat works similarly to a sailboat minus the comfort and leisurely speeds on a lake during summer months. The boat's sharp runners prevent the thin-wooded crafts from sliding sideways, acting as a keel by reducing drift and keeping the boat going in the intended direction.

To get an iceboat going you simply put one foot on the rear plank and start pushing as if you are a dog-sled musher. With a gust of wind, you are off for a ride whose speed and duration depends largely on what Mother Nature has to offer on any given day.

Iceboating in Michigan: 'You really have to experience it once in your life'

ice yacht detroit instagram

If you've ever felt nervous walking on a frozen lake, imagine lying down on one, flying along at 60 mph, without a seat belt.

That's iceboating — boating on a  craft that sails on frozen lakes.

The conditions have to be right, boaters warn. You need a lake that's not too deep so the water will freeze to a safe thickness, yet big enough to allow the boat to hit high speeds before having to turn. You need wind, but not too much or the sailing becomes dangerous.

Most of all, you need smooth ice.

"Typically, you want the frozen lake to be snow free. That’s when you get the best speeds," said Ron Sherry, a professional iceboat racer and boat builder from Clinton Township who won his first major iceboat race at age 12. He went on to win five world championships and 14 North American championships .

"You can sail in some snow, but once there gets to be a lot of snow, there’s too much drag and the boats won’t really go," said Sherry.

When iceboating first emerged as a sport in the 1800s, it was "the domain of people who had a lot of money," said Paul Goodwin, who has held multiple roles with the International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association.

"They built large boats and they had crews to travel with them, set them up, assemble them and race them," he said. "They would actually put these boats on railroad cars and move them around the country and host races with them."

For most iceboaters in Michigan, the story of the iceboat began with an advertisement in The Detroit News more than 85 years ago.

'The DN class of iceboat was developed from a design contest that The Detroit News had in 1936," said Sherry.

The result: A consumer-built, reasonably priced form of winter entertainment to get you through "the days of the Depression," he said.

The News contest and workshop spurred a boat design that could be bought or built by the "common man," Goodwin said.

"It was meant to be a small, one-man iceboat that could be built in a home workshop."

The winning design in 1936 was the Blue Streak 60, with the 60 referring to the square footage of the sail. The News allowed the first boats to be built in their wood shop by locals interested in the sport. After some modifications the name was changed to the DN-60, and the boat design was named the DN class after the newspaper that funded its beginnings.

"We’re still using the same basic specifications that were developed from those plans," said Sherry.

Typical DN iceboats can reach speeds in the 60 mph range.

"You feel g-forces, the boats accelerate so fast," said Sherry, who's been clocked at 94 mph in one of his DN iceboats. "There’s no combustion engine that accelerates as fast as an iceboat."

Sherry suggests beginners check with other racers who often examine a lake ahead of time to avoid hazards like holes or large fissures. Inexperienced boaters often think they shouldn’t bother professional racers and decide to sail on a different part of the ice.

That could be unsafe. "We have scouted the ice. We know where it’s safe," said Sherry.

Beginner or not, "You really have to experience it once in your life to be fair to yourself because it’s just the greatest thing ever," Sherry said.

Iceboating season often only lasts a few weeks each year and boaters will travel all over the Great Lakes and farther to find places to sail.

"We’re all adrenaline junkies," added Tim Bellard, a boat builder from Spring Lake. "We like to go fast, but you don’t have to. You can go slow and cruise around and take lunch out and have a picnic on a lake."

Ice Boating an ancient sport in a modern world

Dec. 2, 2012.

ice yacht detroit instagram

The docks have been pulled from the lakes, and the boats are covered and stored for the winter.

It’s time to go sailing. Iceboating, to be more precise. Sailing on frozen surfaces is believed to have its roots in Northern Europe, where goods and people moved around the region on frozen rivers and canals, using simple sails and handmade boats.

The Dutch and others brought iceboating to the Hudson River valley and other places along the East Coast, where miles of frozen rivers made for great sailing during the winter months. Freight and people were commonly moved up and down the Hudson River in huge, slooped-rigged boats.

Ranging in length from 30 - 50 feet, the stern-steering boats are still raced today by the Northwest Ice Yacht Association, having recently celebrated its 100th anniversary.

You can race ice boats on frozen Lake Erie

  • Published: Jan. 31, 2019, 5:00 a.m.

  • Laura Johnston, cleveland.com

TOLEDO, Ohio – On an ice boat, you can speed across the expanse of Lake Erie at 60, 70 mph.

“Winter is the best sailing,” said Les Lashaway, a Toledoan who grew up ice boating, like his father and grandfather before him. “You have to take advantage of that when you can.”

Lashaway, 65, is commodore of the Toledo Ice Yacht Club , which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and hosting Winterfest this weekend.

Ice boating, or ice yachting, dates to the 17th century in Europe. In 1790, the first American ice boat appeared on the Hudson River. And in Ohio, Lashaway says, men began racing ice boats on Lake Erie in the late 1800s.

An ice boat may look like a sail boat. And many ice boaters also sail. You can jibe and tack an iceboat, to change direction. And in racing, you go around a mark, as you do in sailing. But the boats themselves are totally different.

Iceboats are more like an airplane on its side, with a thick, taut sail you only let out if you’re going around a corner, Lashaway said.

Rather than a wide hull to sit inside, an ice boat has a slender steel hull and a perpendicular cross piece called a runner plank. The boat has three skates (or runners), one at each end of the plank and at the front of the hull. Older boats have steering in the stern, or rear, of the boat. Newer boats steer from the bow.

The most popular, and one of the smallest, types of ice boats is the DN, named for the Detroit News, which in 1937 sponsored an iceboat building contest. There are DN races throughout the United States and Europe.

“They’re completely awesome little crafts,” Lashaway said. “You can make these things real real fast. They go so fast you never go downwind.”

Ice boating is popular in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Sandusky has an ice yacht club, too.

Iceboats need snow-free, smooth ice – plus plenty of wind to move. RocktheLake is headed to Toledo Friday to try out the sport.

You never know when and where you’ll get perfect ice. So while ice regattas are scheduled for specific dates, they may be pushed back week by week. You may not know the location of a regatta until a few days before.

“Three days before, they start scouting the country for the best ice,” Lashaway said. “You just don’t know. You’re ready to travel. You get your credit card empty and be ready to go.”

Thankfully, ice boats can travel atop your car.

The Toledo Ice Yacht Club – formed when four ice yacht clubs combined in 1919 – meets regularly, though, Friday nights from November through March. When the Maumee Bay is ice over, like it is this year, like this year, about 75 people come out to hear the plans for that weekend’s racing. And nearly 100 people may end up at Lashaway’s house.

He doesn’t mind.

“It’s a very old sport, so there’s a lot of old codgers that have been doing it all their life,” Lashaway said. “You never ever miss a year of ice boating.”

Iceboating tragedy in Michigan

Published on February 7th, 2023 by Editor -->

The iceboating community got a jolt as the Detroit Free Press delivers difficult news from Michigan:

An 81-year-old Independence Township man died after crashing his sleek, 27-foot iceboat on frozen Pontiac Lake.

It appears that Dan Campbell was moving fast across the ice in his one-person craft and may have hit his head with enough force to kill him, despite wearing a protective helmet and face shield.

The sheriff’s office said Campbell was on the easternmost part of the lake in White Lake Township just before noon on February 5 when his iceboat crashed, about 100 yards from shore, and investigators were looking for answers to what might have led to the crash. Other iceboaters were on the lake at the time of the crash.

ice yacht detroit instagram

The sheriff’s office did not identify what kind of iceboat Campbell was in. Campbell was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A medical examination on February 6 was expected to determine exactly how Campbell died.

Michigan, which is well-known for its ice sailing because there are so many frozen lakes with unobstructed wind, has several ice yacht clubs, including the Detroit Ice Yacht Club, West Michigan Ice Yacht Club, and Gull Lake Ice Yacht Club.

Editor’s note : We have not been able to determine what caused the accident. If you have information, please send it to [email protected] .

Detroit area resident and former World Champion Ron Sherry competing on Lake Baikal this week in an ice boat that was developed here in the city. From wikipedia: The International DN is a class of ice boat . The name stands for Detroit News , where the first iceboat of this type was designed and built in the winter of 1936-1937. Archie Arrol was a master craftsman working in the Detroit News hobby shop, and together with iceboaters Joe Lodge and Norman Jarrait designed a racing boat they called the "Blue Streak 60", later to become known as the "DN 60". In 1937 a group of 50 laymen worked with Archie in the hobby shop to produce the first fleet of the new iceboats. These first boats broke during the initial season, and after Norm and Joe modified the design to increase the strength, the group got back together to build a second set of iceboats in 1938. This design, featuring a narrow, single-person cockpit , three steel blades in tricycle style arrangement and a steeply raked mast, remains to this day the most popular ice boat design in use. The DN is 12 feet [[3.7 m) long, with a 21 inch [[53 cm) wide cockpit and an 8 foot [[2.4 m) wide runner plank. The 16 foot [[4.9 m) mast supports 60 square feet [[5.6 m²) of sail area. The front runner is typically rigged with a steering rod that connects the runner to a tiller that is mounted just aft of the mast base. The boat weighs around 100 lb [[45 kg), and is piloted by a single helmeted sailor. The class has a devout following. The International DN Ice Yacht Racing Association [[IDNIYRA) is the governing body for the class. It publishes standards for boat design and allows enthusiasts to assemble for races and to share good ice locations. The DN is raced extensively in the northern United States, Canada, and throughout Northern Europe, with World Championships alternating between North American and Europe each year. In addition to the World Championship, the North American and European Championships count towards a racer's World Ranking. One of the reasons that the DN Ice Boat Class has become so popular over the years has been largely in part to how transportable and fast they truly are. With a steady 10-12 mile per hour wind and good ice conditions, the DN, when piloted properly, can reach speeds in excess of 50 miles per hour. And with just a 12-15 mile per hour steady wind, the Detroit News Ice Boat can reach a readily attainable 55–65 miles per hour, providing a thrilling rush of purely unadulterated bone chilling wind powered ice sailing.

Sailing on the open water at that speed would be a blast. 8 knots just seems to painfully slow, especially when the beer's running low.

Back in the days before global warming when Lake St Clair would freeze solid by Christmas there used to be whole fleets of iceboats sailing off of the Grosse Points. My father used to take us out to watch them. The spectator cars would park out there on the ice to watch the boats go. yes it was much, much faster than displacement hull sailing.

Family lore has it that my granduncles used the family cottage on Harsen's Island Northchannel as thier contact point for rumrumming during Prohibition. They had a fast speedboat for summer runs and five iceboats for winter runs across Lk. Ste Claire.

Interesting link to Detroit and the Detroit News. Iceboating was big in Wisconsin, when I lived there in my high school days, particularly on Lake Geneva. Apparently it still is. For a taste of this exciting and bone-chilling sport, here is a video from Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. Speeds in excess of 100 MPH have been achieved.
Ron manufactures the boats and composite parts. A link to his website including a few more good images of the boat. http://www.iceboatracing.com/

An excerpt from a story on Ice Boat.org Renegade Ice Boating "I happened to be at Mt. Clemens when the group from the Detroit News workshop brought out the original DN iceboats they had just finished building. Only a few of the fellows were sailors, and very few iceboat sailors. The wind was blowing a good 25 mph with gusts over 30 mph. The inexperienced sailors wanted to see their boats sail and asked some of the experienced sailors to sail them." I also remember watching some old film clips of that, but I can't remember where. Somewhere on the web.
I found the images on of all places Wayne State University's site. Charles "Skip" Boston, a long time Mt. Clemens resident and manufacturer of ice boat sails. The Boston family has long been involved in yacht racing and ice boating. Skip's son continues to make the best ice boat sails in the world. The boat is an Arrow not a DN but the images were taken on Lake St. Clair.

Here is a Life magazine story from 1942 about ice boating championships on Lake St. Clair. I don't think these are DN boats, but the story does feature one of the early DN boat users and an important figure in Detroit-area ice boating, florist and FTD co-founder Al Pochelon [[whose old building on Bates was recently purchased by Gilbert and is apparently headed for demolition). http://books.google.com/books?id=x1E...20boat&f=false Like Hermod, I remember my grandpa driving us up Lake St. Clair in the winter to go see the iceboats race. He had an ice fishing friend and drinking buddy up by Algonac who owned and raced an iceboat until he injured himself pretty badly in a crash. Hitting ice at 60 or so MPH is not fun.

It was mentioned that the DN boat was developed at the Detroit News hobby shop. I've tried to find more information about the hobby shop. Anyone know what the Detroit News hobby shop was? Was it essentially a workshop? Was it open to anyone? Was it what we would think of as a makerspace today?

John is offline

The hobby shop was on the 5th [[top) floor of the Detroit News Garage, which is at the Southwest corner of Lafayette & 3rd Street. In the mid-1930's, Archie Arrol was placed in charge of the shop after he built a model yacht for one of publisher W.E. Scrips' children. With the country still in a depression, and unemployment over 15%, the sport of iceboating was considered to be for the rich & famous. The goal of the Detroit News project was to provide an inexpensive, home-buildable iceboat that could be built out of common lumber and simple hardware. The production of 50 iceboats was billed as a 'community relations project', but I am not sure how the 50 builders were selected, or what other projects the hobby shop was used for. The development of the DN iceboat seems to be the shops' most notable claim to fame.

UN weather agency issues 'red alert' on climate change after record heat, ice-melt increases in 2023

GENEVA – The U.N. weather agency is sounding a “red alert” about global warming, citing record-smashing increases last year in greenhouse gases, land and water temperatures and melting of glaciers and sea ice, and is warning that the world's efforts to reverse the trend have been inadequate.

The World Meteorological Organization said there is a “high probability” that 2024 will be another record-hot year.

The Geneva-based agency, in a “State of the Global Climate” report released Tuesday, ratcheted up concerns that a much-vaunted climate goal is increasingly in jeopardy: That the world can unite to limit planetary warming to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels.

“Never have we been so close – albeit on a temporary basis at the moment – to the 1.5° C lower limit of the Paris agreement on climate change,” said Celeste Saulo, the agency's secretary-general. “The WMO community is sounding the red alert to the world.”

The 12-month period from March 2023 to February 2024 pushed beyond that 1.5-degree limit, averaging 1.56 C (2.81 F) higher, according to the European Union's Copernicus Climate Service. It said the calendar year 2023 was just below 1.5 C at 1.48 C (2.66 F) , but a record hot start to this year pushed beyond that level for the 12-month average.

“Earth’s issuing a distress call,” U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said. “The latest State of the Global Climate report shows a planet on the brink. Fossil fuel pollution is sending climate chaos off the charts.”

Omar Baddour, WMO's chief of climate monitoring, said the year after an El Niño event — the cyclical warming of the Pacific Ocean that affects global weather patterns — normally tends to be warmer.

“So we cannot say definitively about 2024 is going to be the warmest year. But what I would say: There is a high probability that 2024 will again break the record of 2023, but let’s wait and see,” he said. “January was the warmest January on record. So the records are still being broken.”

The latest WMO findings are especially stark when compiled in a single report. In 2023, over 90% of ocean waters experienced heat wave conditions at least once. Glaciers monitored since 1950 lost the most ice on record. Antarctic sea ice retreated to its lowest level ever.

“Topping all the bad news, what worries me the most is that the planet is now in a meltdown phase — literally and figuratively given the warming and mass loss from our polar ice sheets,” said Jonathan Overpeck, dean of the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, who wasn’t involved in the report.

Saulo called the climate crisis “the defining challenge that humanity faces” and said it combines with a crisis of inequality, as seen in growing food insecurity and migration.

WMO said the impact of heatwaves, floods, droughts, wildfires and tropical cyclones, exacerbated by climate change, was felt in lives and livelihoods on every continent in 2023.

“This list of record-smashing events is truly distressing, though not a surprise given the steady drumbeat of extreme events over the past year,” said University of Arizona climate scientist Kathy Jacobs, who also wasn't involved in the WMO report. “The full cost of climate-change-accelerated events across sectors and regions has never been calculated in a meaningful way, but the cost to biodiversity and to the quality of life of future generations is incalculable.”

But the U.N. agency also acknowledged “a glimmer of hope” in trying to keep the Earth from running too high a fever. It said renewable energy generation capacity from wind, solar and waterpower rose nearly 50% from 2022 — to a total of 510 gigawatts.

“The target of 1.5C degree warming still holds, just like a speed limit on the highway still holds even if we temporarily exceed it," said Malte Meinshausen, a professor of climate science at the University of Melbourne in Australia. “What is more urgent than ever is to grasp the economic opportunities that arise due to the low-cost renewables at our disposal, to decarbonize the electricity sector, and electrify other sectors.”

“We need to step on the brakes of ever-increasing GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions,” said Meinshausen, who also was not involved in the report. “And hopeful signs are there, that GHG emissions are about to peak.”

The report comes as climate experts and government ministers are to gather in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, on Thursday and Friday to press for greater climate action, including increased national commitments to fight global warming.

“Each year the climate story gets worse; each year WMO officials and others proclaim that the latest report is a wake-up call to decision makers,” said University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver, a former British Columbia lawmaker.

“Yet each year, once the 24-hour news cycle is over, far too many of our elected ‘leaders’ return to political grandstanding, partisan bickering and advancing policies with demonstrable short-term outcomes," he said. "More often than not everything else ends up taking precedence over the advancement of climate policy. And so, nothing gets done.”

Borenstein reported from Washington, D.C.
