A sentence is a group of words that makes a complete sense or meaning. The following examples illustrate the way of writing sentences:

  • I go to school every day.
  • Mayank is writing a letter.

The above groups of words make sense and they are giving some meaning. So, they are sentence. Now read the following sentences:

These groups of words do not give any meaning as they are not arranged properly. Therefore, they are not sentences. So taking the help of above mentioned differences, start doing this chapter to learn how to make a sentence.

1. A sentence always begins with a capital letter. 2. The words of a sentence are placed in a proper order. 3. There must be a verb in a sentence. 4. A sentence always ends with a full stop, a question mark or an exclamation mark.

A sentence is defined as a sequence of words arranged in an order that expresses a complete idea. 

In other words, a sentence is a series of word arrangements that convey a complete idea within the grammatical rules of the language.

A simple sentence has two main parts which are the Subject and the Predicate.

The Subject of the sentence refers to the word that commits an action that is being described. 

The Predicate of the sentence consists of a collection of words that describes the action or something in general.

Examples of Sentences Are Given Below.

I get up at 5 o'clock.

Sonia is playing in the snow. 

Raj wants to eat pizza for dinner.

Who are you meeting today?

Tomorrow is a working day.

Sentences could be exclamatory, assertive, imperative, and interrogative.

Types of Sentences

Assertive Sentence

An assertive sentence is a descriptive sentence.

It gives out a piece of information.

For example, this is an apple.

Imperative Sentence

An imperative sentence provides instruction. It is often used to give orders or instructions.

A command, order, request, instruction, or piece of advice can all be expressed in an imperative sentence.

For example, Pease go to your room.

Interrogative Sentence

An interrogative sentence refers to a sentence in the form of a question.

They are used to elicit information from the listener.

It ends with a question mark(?)

For example, what are doing?

Exclamatory Sentence

An exclamatory sentence shows feelings of emotion, usually, surprise or shock.

It ends with an exclamatory mark(!)

For example, What beautiful scenery!

Phrase

A Phrase is a group of words that makes sense but partially. They don’t contain a Subject and a Verb.

Some examples of phrases are given below.

After completing my 12th, I prepared twice for IIT ( Indian Institute of Technology ) from Aakash institute, but unfortunately, I failed to get selected into the best IIT colleges. But during the preparation, I was being graduated from CSJMU Kanpur. I completed my graduation in 2016 and now I’m pursuing an educational degree ( B.Ed. ). 2. Profession – Although I love teaching, but I also do blogging. Both are my favorite jobs.
