Yacht Clubs in the Boston Area

Yacht clubs are an important institution on the Boston waterfront and they are famous for being among the oldest in the country. For example, the South Boston Yacht club was founded in 1868 and was one the first 20 yacht clubs in the country to open its doors. Incidentally, most waterfronts in the West and South of the United States are served by marinas, but that is less so in Boston. Instead, many boaters join a local Yacht Club and there are over 70 of them around Boston Area to choose from.

Most Yacht Clubs operate on a membership basis and rules and fees vary a great deal among clubs. Each Yacht Club is a unique organization with its own traditions, ideas and membership. Hovever, most clubs provide the most essential services to boaters like docking, mooring, launch services, racing programs, youth programs and social events. Increasingly, Yacht Clubs offer both, regular memberships as well as social memberships. The latter accommodates folks who do not use the boating facilities of the club but simply want to be part of the social events and privileges of the club. Such memberships are generally half the cost of a a regular membership.

Membership fees vary and depend a lot on the location, size and type of facilities of the club. Many clubs also require a one-time initiation fee. Some Yacht clubs are easy to join, others have a waiting list and may require recommendations by other members.

Many yacht clubs rent out their facilities to non-members offering their attractive waterfront venues for weddings, birthdays or functions.

Savin Hill Yacht Club

Founded in 1875

The Savin Hill Yacht Club (SHYC) was founded early in the summer of 1875, as the Savin Hill Beach Association. The club was chartered on October 10th, 1888 under its present name. The club is named for a scenic hill renamed Savin Hill by Joseph Tuttle, who operated a summer hotel in the area and took the name from the red cedar trees that formerly covered the rocky eminence.

Finding SHYC from the water

SHYC sits on Fox Point in Dorchester Bay, South of Columbia Point, and West of Thompson Island.

Visting Mariners

Location The club occupies Fox Point on Dorchester Bay, which opens to the entrance to Boston’s inner harbor. It shares a cove with Univ. of Mass. at Boston, and its mooring area extends from there toward the “Sister Corita” Boston Gas gas tank. This is close to public transportation, the Savin Hill and JFK Red Line T stops. JFK Library, supermarkets, a motel and other stores are nearby. Lat/Long: approximately 42′ 18.5″ North, 71′ 2.4″ West.

Launch Daily, in season. Hail the launch, “Retriever,” on VHF channel 68.

Fuel Gasoline at the dock.

Ice Available at the dock.

Moorings Moorings are each member’s responsibility, so the club has no authority to offer a guest mooring. Make arrangements directly with the member for the use of their mooring.

Clubhouse Waterfront lounge and grille. Current hours are posted in FAQs. Always a cooling breeze on our beautiful canvas-covered, wrap-around deck.

Showers Available 24 hours in the clubhouse.

Parking Off-street parking.

Local News | Hot Property: Luxury new custom home the Marion kind

hot property - 5 Deer Run, Marion,MA-02738

Admittedly, we didn’t know much about Marion but one look around its adorable village center, stately homes, and the waters lapping at Sippican Harbor and we’re big fans. Tucked into Plymouth County, you can still see a show in Boston or boat to Martha’s Vineyard before retreating to your idyllic in-between spot at 5 Deer Run.

Built in 2024, the gleaming custom home’s exterior is a marriage of traditional lines and contemporary design. The property sits at the end of a long driveway on a whopping 8.4 acres abutting a thicket of trees, in a private enclave of just a few similarly high-end homes. Enter through the dramatic double front door — or the door to the neatly organized mudroom — or park in the giant three-car garage and settle in.

In a home with three floors and more than 6,200 square feet, you’re bound to find more than a few highlights, but one of the standouts is the kitchen and living space that open to the home’s expansive patio. Paneled, professional-grade appliances, an oversized eat-in island, and a view that extends to the living room’s sleek fireplace feature prioritizes eating and gathering as a family, plus plenty of room to invite a gaggle of friends.

Five bedrooms, all on the second floor, each have their own en-suite bath, but naturally, it’s the primary suite that shines with a custom walk-in closet, a spa bath with a freestanding soaking tub, and a sweet balcony overlooking the treeline.

In the morning, take the elevator down to the home’s lower-level gym for your workout, which is where you’ll also find a roomy den, movie theater, and storage space.

The town center’s eateries, Beverly Yacht Club, and golfing at the Kittansett Club are all just minutes away.

The sale of the home, on the market for $3,000,000, is represented by Jane Migdol and Nancy Moore with the Migdol Moore Team at Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty.
