Tax for Yacht Charters in the Bahamas

What is the cost of tax for yacht charters in the Bahamas? From the 1st of July 2022, a new 10% VAT rate will be levied on the total charter fee, and is applicable to all yachts cruising in Bahamian waters. The new 10% levy does not replace the current 4% cruising fee which remains payable to the Port Department. 

All yachts wishing to cruise within the archipelago must now register for VAT in the Bahamas and receive a Bahamian TIN number.

Foreign-Flagged Yachts in US Waters

There are strict and complicated rules governing commercial yacht charters (non-private) cruising US waters, which in general means that only US-flagged yachts or US built yachts with a coastwise endorsement can conduct yacht charters in the US. Furthermore, yachts that are available for charter are considered to be "engaging in a trade" and thus ineligible for a US cruising licence. Most luxury charter yachts are also not US duty paid.

As the majority of the charter fleet are foreign-flagged yachts, Bahamas yacht charters will likely begin outside of the US, usually in the Bahamian capital of Nassau where there is a large busy international airport.

That said, it is possible to pick-up charter guests in the US so long as the yacht's next port of call is outside of US waters. This can be a good option for those wishing to meet the boat in Florida and cruise down to the Bahamas from here.

Where Should I Begin My Yacht Charter in the Bahamas?

The vast majority of yacht charters in the Bahamas embark and disembark in the country's picturesque capital  Nassau , which is home to its best-known international ports, dotted with top-rung marinas all along its azure waters. The city is justly renowned for its throng of fine-dining options, boutiques, hip eateries, and casinos fringed by towering palm trees. Nassau is also conveniently located for cruising to the Exumas and beyond.

For a real respite from the crowds, it's common for yacht charter guests to embark their vessel at Marsh Harbor on the  Abaco Islands ,  where you can trace the mesmerizing string of sandy cays that can be found here. Its shores, a serene and shimmering topaz, are perfect for dropping anchor and taking the toys for a spin.

When is the Best Time to Visit the Bahamas by Yacht?

One of the great joys of choosing a Bahamas yacht charter is that its balmy climes and shallow waters make it more or less ideal to cruise all-year-round* .  But the Bahamas does have a peak season from mid-December to mid-April. The average temperatures of both Bahamian summers and winters are unsurprisingly tropical: hovering between 24-29 degrees and rarely dipping below this. 

During the summertime (from May until October), guests can expect endless sunshine and some humidity, while from November until April, the Bahamas has a slightly cooler temperature and colder waters.

*However, whilst Bahamian weather is pleasingly warm all-year the islands do fall within the hurricane belt, running from June until the end of November along the US East Coast and the Caribbean. The Western Caribbean's own hurricane season usually starts from mid-September until early November.

Nevertheless, it is worth keeping in mind that hurricanes in the Bahamas are fairly infrequent, and even less so than on the US East Coast.

It is not hyperbole to say that the Bahamas offers some of the most spectacular marinas in the world: from glamorous hotspots replete with award-winning restaurants, designer stores, and buzzing beach bars, to the exquisite barefoot luxury that emanates from the less frequented.

A slew of activities is on offer here, including bonefishing, ocean fishing, dolphin watching, golfing, and snorkeling. And that's not even to mention the dizzying array of casinos, water parks, and marine reserves you can also find. • Weather conditions and wind strength play a crucial role in anchorage spots in the Bahamas, so plan any overnight anchorages accordingly.
• Some anchorages can be a bit of a challenge to set: it's common for heavy grass to cover a large section of some of the better spots to drop anchor 
• Anchorages that appear to have a sandy bottom can oftentimes be just a thin layer of sand over a coral reef or rock, making it difficult to dig the anchor in. Don't be misled by them!

In most cases, a completed charter agreement and 50% of the charter fee is required as a deposit to secure your luxury yacht charter, which is payable once the contract has been signed.

Sail Away Charters start in Marsh Harbour Great Abaco. This is a great jumping off point to visit the other islands of the Abacos including Elbow Cay, Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay and many more. These islands are much less crowded compared to other major island destinations – you can enjoy secluded sandy beaches and commune with nature if you wish or wander amongst the small villages where the locals could not be any more friendly and hospitable.

Obviously, weather and conditions may dictate where you want to go and when.  There are many options to choose from, so make it a vacation you and your crew will never forget!

Upon arrival in Marsh Harbour airport where your taxi will be waiting, head to Maxwells Grocery to provision for your trip if needed, then head straight to Pete’s Pub . Check in with the charter manager for orientation of your vessel and to unpack.  Then head to Pete’s to unwind, grab a drink and a fresh catch meal.  While you are there, take time to wander the grounds and see the bronze statues made there at the foundry, visit the gallery, and head to the beach on the ocean side to collect shells, or swim in the shallow sandy waters of the harbour.  Overnight options: Stay aboard inside Little Harbour on the mooring ball, or sail out and anchor off of Tom Curry Point, Leonard Cay, Spencer’s Point, or Sandy Cay depending on wind/weather.

Set sail for Treasure Cay and grab a mooring ball to enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas OR sail off to Great Guana Cay and anchor off of Fisher Bay or Great Cay Harbour.  Guana is  home to two legendary tiki bar/restaurants - Nippers and Grabbers .  Enjoy a meal or take a dip in their pools or dive the third largest reef in the world just off the beach at Nippers.

Upon leaving either of the chosen destinations above, make way to either the protected waters of Man-O-War Cay to wander their quaint, quiet village OR head for Elbow Cay where you can grab a mooring ball in Hope Town Harbour or anchor off the cay to dinghy in for your days activities.  Explore the historic light house and harbour shops and restaurants. If you need fuel, gas, water, ice, or provisions you can find it all in the harbour area. Consider renting a golf cart to see the entire island where you can explore the beaches or visit some of our favorite spots like Firefly , Abaco Inn , or On Da Beach !

Anchor off of famous Tahiti Beach at the South end of Elbow Cay or anchor off of Tilloo or Lubbers Quarter Cay.  Dinghy in to have a cold drink or meal at Lubber’s Landing or spend the day swimming or sunbathing at the beach.  You can spend the night here or head back towards Sail Away Catamarans in Little Harbour.

Leave plenty of time to return to the charter base to check out at the assigned time.  Have one last visit to Pete’s Pub before departing for the airport.

NOTE: You must return to Little Harbour with topped off fuel/water and with trash removed.  You can do this in Hope Town or in Marsh Harbour.  Please plan ahead before returning to our base.

In the morning, head over to Norman Cay, famously home to Carlos Lehder's drug smuggling operations between 1978 and 1982. Day 2: Great Guana Cay

On Sundays, which is your 3rd day on board your boat rental, you can join the island's festivities, where a vibrant party scene occurs every week at the seaside restaurants and bars. Suppose you're looking for a more peaceful anchorage or experience. In that case, however, you can stay overnight at the northern side of the island before you head back and culminate your weekend yacht charter around the Exumas.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Communication Before your Charter

To ensure a smooth arrival, we ask that your arrival details (flights, cab/ferry) be provided in your booking when you submit your crew list. The link to submit the crew list and arrival details is on your booking contract and can be filled in by one person, or in succession (one part of the group fills out their info, then using the same link the other part of the group can fill out their details) . This information must be provided (or updated) no later than two weeks before your charter.

We must also have your sailing resume or credentials on file, please review the requirements for the Bahamas .

To further expedite the check-in process, please provide your shoe sizes for snorkeling-fins.

Before Boarding, a mandatory check-in takes place:

• The check-in includes both a Charter Briefing and a Boat Briefing to be held starting from 4:00 pm on the day of the scheduled departure. (We try to accommodate departures prior if possible once the briefing has been completed.)
• The skipper/captain must be present during both the Charter Briefing and the Boat Briefing.
• During check-in, we will also remit to you: your cruising permits, chart, phone, and cruising guide, all of which must be returned to the office at check-out.

If you arrive at boarding time (4 pm): We welcome the head charterer (one person) to go to the office for documentation and check-in. All other guests are welcome to the dock area where the boat will be waiting.

If you arrive early: Welcome to Great Abaco! We encourage you to finalize your provisions or relax at a local restaurant or café before boarding. Please let us know if you have arrived so we can inform you if your boat is available earlier than the scheduled check-in at 4 pm.

Leaving the Dock

Unless previously approved by the base, no charter will be allowed to leave the dock after 6:00 pm (18:00) regardless of the charter contract dates.

For safety reasons, please let us know if you plan to spend your first night aboard your vessel.

Arrival After Hours

If you arrive after hours (from 5 pm on): Please contact the base beforehand so they can make sure your boat is open. The taxi driver (if you pre-booked your transfer) will take you to the boat.

Checkout must be completed by 10 am on the last day of your charter.

By that time, guests and their luggage will have departed the boat and returned it in broom clean condition, with dishes clean and put away, the fuel tank(s) filled.

Be sure to plan enough time to refuel your yacht; refueling options will be provided during your check-in. Should you need docking or refueling assistance upon your return please contact our base staff.

Remember, prior to returning to the base, per the instructions you will receive during your check-in, the waste tank(s) will need to be emptied at sea. Failure to comply with these requirements will incur extra guest charges.
