St. Petersburg woman presumed dead, husband and son hurt after boat fire in Florida Keys

A 51-year-old St. Petersburg woman is missing and presumed dead, and her husband and son are hospitalized after a fire that destroyed the yacht they were on early Wednesday morning in the Florida Keys, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

The St. Petersburg family was on the approximately 70-foot Viking yacht with a family of four when it caught fire around 12:10 a.m. at the Perry Hotel & Marina Key West on Stock Island, the agency said in a Facebook post .

A second Facebook post identified the woman as Linda Vella, along with her husband, Michael Kenneth Robson, 58, and son Anthony Joseph Vella, 21. They were visiting the Florida Keys for the lobster mini-season.

The yacht was fully engulfed in flames when Monroe County Fire Rescue crews got to the scene, the Sheriff’s Office said. It took about three hours to extinguish the fire.

Michael Robson and Anthony Vella were airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami for treatment of their injuries, the Sheriff’s Office said. No one in the other family was injured.

Linda Vella’s husband and son went back into the burning boat to help her after she returned to the vessel to rescue a dog onboard, Monroe County Fire Chief Jim Callahan said. The dog remains missing.

Both men were burned severely on their hands and feet, Callahan said.

The boat sank, creating what the Sheriff’s Office called “hazardous conditions” that are complicating the search for the missing woman. Crews from the Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and TowBoat U.S. are assisting.

Brooklyn and Lisamarie Vella identified Linda Vella as their mother in separate online posts.

Lisamarie Vella linked to a GoFundMe page honoring her mother’s memory on an Instagram story showing the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office’s initial post .

On the GoFundMe page, Lisamarie Vella wrote, in part, “I woke up to a night mare I have no words I can’t even put myself together. Unfortunately a tragedy happened and my parents boat blew up in flames. My brother and dad are in critical condition in Miami burn center as for my mom and her dog they didn’t make it off the boat.”

“Such a beautiful soul, the best mother and even greater friend!” one post from Brooklyn Vella says.

“Dozer was here best friend,” the post continues. “she loved that damn dog so much I believe she sacrificed herself to try and save him.”

“I will mourn you for the rest of my life,” Brooklyn Vella’s post says.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by state fire marshals and detectives from the Sheriff’s Office, authorities said.

WOMAN DIES IN BOAT FIRE AT A STOCK ISLAND MARINA; 2 MEN TREATED FOR BURNS

perry hotel yacht fire

A 70-foot Viking yacht from St. Petersburg, Florida caught fire just after midnight on July 26 while docked at The Oasis Marina, behind The Perry Hotel on Stock Island.

Two men, ages 58 and 21, escaped the fire, but one female victim, 51, did not make it out, according to Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay and Sgt. Tyler Blanton, who was on scene.

The two men were airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami with burns.

As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 26, the Sheriff’s Office divers were searching for the woman inside the vessel. The St. Petersburg, Florida family was in the Florida Keys for lobster mini-season. Another family of four also on the boat escaped uninjured, according to the sheriff’s office.

The boat was engulfed in flames when Monroe County Fire Rescue crews arrived shortly after midnight on Wednesday. They battled the blaze for approximately three hours.

The Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and TowBoat U.S. crews are assisting in the search for the woman while negotiating hazardous conditions where the vessel sank in the marina.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office and Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Detectives are investigating. The cause of the fire is part of that investigation.

Woman presumed dead, husband and son airlifted after yacht catches fire near Key West

Courtesy: MCSO

KEY WEST, FLA. (WSVN) - A Florida woman is believed to have died after a yacht caught fire in the Florida Keys, a blaze that also sent her husband and son to the hospital, authorities said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the blaze at the Peary Hotel & Marina on Stock Island, located at 7001 Shrimp Road, early Wednesday morning.

Investigators said a 70-foot Viking yacht was destroyed as a result of the fire that ignited at around 12:10 a.m.

When fire rescue crews arrived at the scene, the boat was fully engulfed. It took them roughly three hours to extinguish the fire.

The 51-year-old woman who went missing is now presumed dead. She was later identified as Linda Vella of St. Petersburg.

According to deputies, two men identified as Vella’s husband and son, 58-year-old Michael Kenneth Robson and 21-year-old Anthony Joseph Vella, were also on board the vessel when the fire occurred. The two were airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.

The family members, who are from St. Petersburg, were in the Keys for lobster mini-season.

There was another family of four on board, but they were able to escape uninjured.

MCSO’s Dive Team, as well as TowBoat U.S crews, are assisting in the search for Linda Vella. Dive teams are being cautious in their search since the vessel’s sinking has caused hazardous conditions.

The state Fire Marshal’s Office and Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes detectives are investigating the cause of the fire.

KEY WEST, Fla. — Monroe County officials suspect they found the remains of the 51-year-old St. Petersburg woman whom they had declared dead after a boat fire early Wednesday morning in the Florida Keys.

It's believed the body of Linda Vella was recovered from the burnt remains of the 70-foot Viking yacht she had been on, deputies said on Facebook. However, identification and autopsy results of the woman's body are pending with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to authorities, Vella had been on the yacht with her husband, 58-year-old Michael Robson, and her son, 21-year-old Anthony Vella, while they were at the Keys for the lobster mini-season.

The boat reportedly caught fire shortly after midnight on Wednesday while the yacht was docked outside the Perry Hotel and Marina. Crews spent three hours putting out the blaze. Investigators believed Vella couldn't escape the fire and was still on the yacht during the ensuing search, according to deputies.

Another family of four who was on the boat did manage to get off the boat uninjured. Michael and Anthony were flown to a hospital in Miami. Linda Vella was presumed dead as of Wednesday.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team worked with TowBoat U.S., Monroe County Fire Rescue, and marina officials to search for her remains. Deputies said the boat was completely destroyed and "structurally comprised due to the blaze", so the team carefully lifted the boat out of the water before searching it.

The Sheriff's Office said that they don't know what caused the fire, but the investigation is ongoing.

Lisamarie Vella, who identified herself as Vella's daughter, set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for her mother's funeral expenses.

After a Florida Keys boat fire, rescuers couldn’t find a woman. Now her family knows

Crews on Friday pulled a woman’s body out of the burned wreckage of a yacht that went up in flames while docked at a Florida Keys marina.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office didn’t confirm the woman’s identification, but 51-year-old Linda Vella from St. Petersburg has been missing since the the 100-foot Viking boat was destroyed Wednesday while docked at the Perry Hotel & Marina at 7101 Shrimp Rd. on Stock Island just after midnight Wednesday.

Her husband, Michael Kenneth Robson, 58, and son, Anthony Joseph Vella, 21, got off the boat, but they remain hospitalized in a Miami-Dade County burn center, Vella’s daughter, Lisamarie Vella, said in a GoFundMe post.

According to the post, the two men are in critical condition.

“We all love u. You were the best mom. The best friend. You were all I had. You were the glue that kept our family together,” wrote Lisamarie Vella. “I don’t no how I’m going to live this life with out. I ask you all to pray for my family [as] they they recover fast and that we all mentally get through this.”

The family’s pet dog also died in the fire, according to the daughter.

The woman’s body was removed from the boat Friday after what remained of it was lifted from the water, said Keys sheriff’s office spokesman Adam Linhardt.

“Investigators believed Vella was unable to escape the fire and was still aboard the vessel during the ensuing search,” Linhardt said in a statement.

Linhardt said that along with the sheriff’s office dive team and major crimes detectives, TowBoat US, Monroe County Fire Rescue and the state Fire Marshal’s Office took part in the search.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire investigators have received reports that last month’s fatal yacht fire in Stock Island may have been sparked by an electric bike battery.

Monroe County Fire Chief Jim Callahan confirmed his agency has received reports from witnesses to the July 26 fire that killed 51-year-old Linda Vella that the blaze may have been caused by an electric bike battery that ignited or exploded, causing the vessel to become quickly engulfed in flames.

Two men from the St. Petersburg family, ages 21 and 58, were airlifted to a hospital in Miami-Dade County. A 35-year-old Moscow man is in serious condition at Gritman Medical Center after his trailer home caught fire early Wednesday morning.

Moscow Police Chief David Duke said Joshua Behrends was pulled from his trailer by a brave neighbor who noticed the fire around 4 a.m.

"The neighbor noticed the fire and went over and took him out of the mobile home," said Joe Williams, division chief for the Moscow Volunteer Fire Department. "This guy risked his life to save this other person."

Behrends was transported to Gritman Medical Center for smoke inhalation. Two cats and a dog died in the fire, said Duke, but another dog escaped.

Williams said 24 volunteer firefighters responded to the trailer fire, which resulted in a total loss, minor damage to Behrends' vehicle and some heat damage to an adjacent trailer. He said the fire spread quickly due to the wind.

A cause of the blaze is not yet known, and a fire investigation may have to wait until Thursday, said Williams.

"So far the cause is undetermined," he said. "There's nothing suspicious about this that I can see."

Ostankino Tower catches fire in Moscow

Friday, May 25, 2007

perry hotel yacht fire

Early this morning, Ostankino Tower in Moscow , Russia , caught fire for the second time since August 2000, due to sparks from welding work on a balcony which set fire to insulation. BBC News Online reported that the fire is not currently considered to have been as serious as the fire seven years ago that killed three and left homes without television for many days. Everyone present in the tower at the time was successfully evacuated. The fire was first isolated to a platform on the outside of the tower and later successfully extinguished, with no casualties or disruptions to any television signals around Moscow.
