Need info on a Montego 20

Looking for a trailer sailer. No swing keel, funny rigs or fin keels. The Montego rec'vd good review in 1985 and specs look good for what it is. Any big problems I hear the main sheet set up is not ideal but what is? In a hurry pals.

Brian S

Are you also asking for advice on a good trailer sailer, or just have a live Montego 20 on the hook, and debating whether or not to get it? Here's the sailboatdata sheet for it: http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=56 If you want advice on a similar fixed keel trailer sailer, try a Com-Pac 19 I think I rather fancy a ballasted shoal keel with centerboard style boat, myself, such as my O'day 192, or Precision 18. Going a bit bigger, there's the Precision 21. The West Wight Potter 19 is a beloved boat, but it has a lifting keel. The new International Marine Voyager 20 is based on the WWP19 hull, but has ballasted keel/centerboard setup. That's almost one of the definitions of a trailer sailor, is no deep keel, for easy launch retrieval. To get enough center of resistance in a shoal keel without resorting to lifting keel, swing keel, or shoal keel/centerboard combo, you have to make the shallow keel longer, as in the Com-Pac 19, but I personally don't like the sluggish turning of a long shoal keel. The other way to go is a shoal wing keel, in boats such as the Catalina Capri 18.

Crazy Dave Condon

Whatr you are looking for is a shoal draft keel that does not protrude down too far from the bottom of the hull. Although the Compac is a wonderful boat, not as good performer on inland lakes but of course larger jibs can help. You might want to look for example the Precision sailboats as well. The key as pointed out, you want to be able to launch a fixed shoal draft keel boat with ease. Look at a Catalina Sport 22 with the Catalina sport 22 trailer. It comes with an optional mast rasie system too. Yes it is a swing keel but sits very low on the trailer and the trailer is low itself. I introduced that boat for Catalina as a dealer and was involved with the design of that trailer. I am now retired no longer selling but giving information. Feel free to contact me via the forum email but will not be available till next week due to a wedding.

Thanks, I know about sailboat data. I'm aware of the boats you mention. Some cost 8 times what I'm looking to spend. The Montego is what I'm asking about.

Ok, texoma, so you're not asking about other trailer sailers. So, we can assume that you have a hot Montego in your sights, and you want to know more before you pull the trigger? Then I suggest you ask directly what things you want to know about, and hope for someone with experience with that boat. Otherwise, we'll have to assume you have for whatever reason decided you want a Montego, and now are actively seeking one, in which case the point is moot as you've already made up your mind...

I'll try to ask better questions next time. Thanks again sailor.

D'Oh, thanks.

Tex, no worries! All I ask, if you buy the boat, let us know how it goes, and post lots of pictures!

texoma22x, I see you've listed a San Juan 23. Do you currently have one? I was going to suggest that instead of the Montego and then saw your listing. I sail a SJ 23 and love it. Just wondering? Ray

Did not have a boat when I joined the forum. Had a SJ23 once. Thought it was way too tender for my taste. Bought the Montego 20 last weekend. It is in great shape for an elderly lady. Love the 80's. Thanks for writing. Joe

Montego 25 is a 25 ′ 3 ″ / 7.7 m monohull sailboat designed by Johannes "Jopie" Helsen and built by Universal Marine Corp. between 1980 and 1985.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
