Founded in 1949 and joined SCYA in 1950

Total: 490 members – 40% power, 60% sail.

Facilities: Club is open 7 days a week. Bar open Mon.-Thurs. 1600-2200, Fri & Sat 1600-2400, Sun 1500-2200. Galley open Wed & Fri bar menu 1800-2100; Thur dinner, Fri lunch, Sat & Sun breakfast & lunch. KHYC has first right of refusal for berths in King Harbor Marina and offers dry storage and 2 jib boom cranes (3 & 1.5 ton capacity). Guest dock 3 nights free for reciprocals, maximum stay limited, 7 days out of 30. After three nights $1 per foot per night.

Membership: The club is accepting applications for membership. Call for details.

Comments: KHYC is a family club with active fleets and interest groups. The Club is highly competitive in all types of racing, including Multihull, Cal 20 and Martin 242 fleets, and has an excellent junior program with active Opti race teams and teaching.

Achievements: KHYC won the SCYA Senior Club of the Year Award in 2023, 2022, 2017, 2003*, 2002** and 2000 (* tied with BCYC, BYC & DPYC;  ** tied with DPYC)

KHYC FUN FACTS + UNIQUE HISTORY

KHYC was created in 1960 with the merger of the Win’ard Yacht Club and Redondo Harbor Yacht Club.

Member and architect Bob Viault designed the KHYC Clubhouse.

S/C Fred Hope designed the upper deck fireplace in the shape of a ship’s lantern, and this welcoming area is a beacon for member relaxation.

We are one of only 2 yacht clubs in Southern California with views of the open ocean.

KHYC members enjoy ‘right of first refusal’ for slips in King Harbor Marina — the fastest way to get a slip in KHM.

Both Win’ard Yacht Club and Redondo Harbor Yacht Club members sailed off the beach where the boatyard and the King Harbor Marina apartments are now.

S/C Nick Galloway painted the artwork on the Upper Deck west wall of the Santa Catalina Island cove that members enjoyed as our club outpost for many years.

The Cal 20 Fleet hosts an annual White Elephant Christmas party each year — and an actual stuffed white elephant still shows up every year!

We regularly get to enjoy the “Green Flash” as the sun sets in the west.

KHYC has 155’ of guest dock space and welcomes cruisers from reciprocal yacht clubs sailing up and down the coast from Canada to Mexico and points beyond.

There’s something calming about lights on the water, said Pat Light, chair of this year’s King Harbor Holiday Boat Parade.

And as the 20 or so big and small vessels made their way around Redondo Beach’s marina, those reflections did, indeed, lend an air of peacefulness, even with the crazed holiday shopping season in full swing.

The theme of the boat parade, sponsored by the King Harbor Yacht Club for nearly three decades, was two pronged this year, Light said in an interview before the procession, which took place on Saturday night, Dec. 9.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” is the more lighthearted theme. The more serious theme was “Honoring the Storm,” which paid tribute to the King Harbor Yacht Club volunteers who helped rebuild part of the King Harbor Marina parking lot, which had buckled after last winter’s storm.

“I’m trying to give back to some of our members,” Light said of the King Harbor Yacht Club helpers.

New to the boat parade this year, meanwhile, was an entry by South Redondo’s Jewish Center, with its vessel sporting a giant menorah, the nine-pronged candle symbol of Hanukkah, which was in its third of eight nights on Saturday.

The new giant menorah and all the other boats compete for seven awards, Light said, ranging from four categories based on the boats’ sizes to a Spirit Award, a Music and Customing Award, and the penultimate Sweepstakes Award for best in show.

The evening was a chance for residents to come together.

“This is a community event,” Light said, “and the more community participation, the better.”

King Harbor Yacht Club Celebrated the Opening of the 2022 Boating Season

REDONDO BEACH— The Opening Day ceremonies for the boating season at King Harbor Yacht Club were celebrated on April 10. The ceremonies are modeled after events in the northeast and other cold climes, where boaters must wait for the ice to melt before they can begin boating. Because of the endless 365-day SoCal season, local boaters joke that the only ice is in their drinks.

This is the 73rd boating season for KHYC, formed by the merger of Win’Ard Yacht club, founded in 1949, and Redondo Harbor Yacht Club, founded in 1956. The clubs merged in 1960 and built the current clubhouse in 1964. This year’s Commodore is Francie Hope, who is married to the 2006 Commodore, who is the son of the 1956 Commodore; it is a family affair.

Guests included commodores from many sister SoCal yacht clubs and various community leaders, including from the U.S.Coast Guard and its auxiliary. The offices of the Redondo Beach Congressman, State Senator, Assemblyman, and County Supervisor all provided proclamations in honor of the Opening Day. Redondo Beach Mayor Bill Brand personally addressed the assembly, accompanied by harbor-area Councilman Todd Loewenstein.

The members and guests were fed appetizers and champagne, followed by a barbecue and dancing, and music was provided by a live band. Two-dozen hospitality boats flew decorative signal flags while the guests aboard for snacks and libations. The entire extravaganza was chaired by the outgoing Commodore, Tom Polizzi, who was inducted into the ‘International Order of the Blue Gavel’ for his service to yachting.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadets provided the Color Guard, the Sea Scouts managed the parking, and the King Harbor Youth Foundation served as ushers.

King Harbor Yacht Club hosts year-round sailboat races that are open to all boat owners and community members wishing to crew. In addition, the club has sailboats available to rent for its members. KHYC also incorporates ‘Fleets’ of boaters with similar interests, including Cruisers, Powerboaters, and Fishermen.

The club provides Adult Sailing Lessons and Youth Summer Camps to the public during the summer.

Overall rating

We take our boat out or at least try to every month (has prices are INSANE!). The Redondo Beach Marina is fantastic to park your car then head out to Catalina or Malibu (depending on your mood). Please be hind to marine life, don't release balloons, don't be wasteful and save the turtles!!!

This club is a wonderful community of water-oriented individuals and families. Power boaters, fishermen, sailors, cruisers, kayakers, stand up paddle boarders are all busy at this club getting out on the water. The facilities are a cozy and welcoming, with some of the best views in the Santa Monica Bay. The food and bar service staff are attentive and kind. The best part is the camaraderie of the members!

We hosted a company anniversary party at the King Harbor Yacht Club. It was an awesome event! So grateful to everyone!! Amazing views, fantastic food, helpful staff... GREAT experience, Thank you!!
