Can I work on superyacht with a tattoo?

We all know that the superyacht industry can be a superficial one – I mean what other industry besides a modelling agency requires your photo on your cv right? – but what does this mean for potential crew with existing tattoos? The superyacht industry is a competitive one, especially for new crew as the sheer volume of yachties looking for work is high, so…

Will having a tattoo make it impossible for you to find work?

The short answer is that you can find work onboard a yacht with tattoos, but it will depend on the size and number of tattoos that are visible in your uniform. The industry has certainly become more relaxed surrounding tattoos, as the number of crew we have met with them has romantically increased in the past number of years, but ultimately the final call will come down to the personal preference of the yacht owner and/or captain.

Many recruitment agencies will enquire ask you to declare if you have any tattoos when applying for a position online. If you have large tattoos that cover a significant portion of your body and that would be visible either on your forearms, calves, neck or face you may be required to submit a photo of the tattoo for the employer to decide whether or not this will be acceptable. Working on yachts is essentially a glorified hospitality position and you will be customer facing majority of the day, so it goes without saying that if you tattoos are offensive, or covering a significant portion of your face it is highly unlikely you will be successfully employed.

However, if you have a small tattoo on your foot, wrist or thigh that can be easily covered with make up, plaster or in uniform we suggest you be upfront and honest about it with your crew agents as there is little chance of that hindering your employment status. What is more important is that you show your potential employer that you are keen, willing to work hard and most importantly are a team player. Check out our blog on the skills that could benefit you on yachts and how to work on a superyacht, with no experience to read up on some additional skills that will help you find that ever elusive first job on a yacht.

Impress your captain with a can-do attitude and we are confident there will be no issue for you to Get Onboard.

Can I still get work on a Superyacht with a tattoo?

can yachties have tattoos

As an online superyacht crew recruitment platform, we often get asked if tattoos are a barrier to getting work onboard a luxury vessel?

Like most walks of life, superyacht owners come from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life themselves. So I strongly believe there will always be a yacht for every type of yachtie. Owners who like tattoos, owners who don’t and those who are completely indifferent either way! What I would say though, is that visible tattoos can reduce the number of roles you might be successful in applying for, due to the fact that some boats have a no visible tattoo policy.

The superyacht industry is renowned for being particular, to say the least.  It’s a popular career choice, so there’s lots of competition for jobs and employers want only the most committed, hard-working crew members. Crew who will fit in with the ethos of delivering an exceptional standard of service, take instruction, learn quickly and fit in with the team.

So although the answer is YES you can get work on a Superyacht if you’ve got a tattoo.  There is a rather large BUT … landing that superyacht gig you really want will depend on where, what and how large your tattoo is?

With tattoos becoming more and more popular, superyacht captains and recruiters have become more relaxed, they’ve had to. They’re very aware they could be missing out on a fabulous stewardess, deckhand, engineer, paddleboard instructor or chef if they say no to tattoos, but likewise they do have to be mindful of the owner’s preferences and those of his/her guests and the sensitivities of charter guests. After all, superyacht jobs are pretty much all customer facing, so it goes without saying that any offensive tattoos or big facial tattoos might hinder your chances of getting work if there’s a chance the guests might be offended in any way.

If yours is a small or discreet tattoo you got whilst on holiday or on a gap year, that you can easily cover up if you’re asked to, then you should have nothing to worry about.

On the other hand, if your tattoo is large or visible either below the line of your t-shirt sleeve, above your collar line or below the knee, some yachts might discount you. It’s very subjective.  The final decision depends very much on the captain and owner. I’d suggest the type, size and location of the tattoo is so subjective you might even be asked to send in a picture of it, along with your application just to check it’s acceptable.

Saying that, we’ve had many, many crew with tattoos, make successful applications for jobs onboard superyachts over the years and then go on to forge fabulous careers in the superyacht industry.  Some of them even getting more tattoos whilst overseas, travelling from country to country.

One department that does seem to avoid as much scrutiny is the engine room. Mainly because many engineer roles are not client facing. For those with tattoos who wish to cover them up there are so many products out there. From skin colour arm wraps to cover up paints. One thing I would say though is that you should always be honest on your profile and CV. The best way to start a new role badly is to have to explain that you do have a visible tattoo on day 1 when you stated otherwise on your CV. You can always write that you can use cover up products when on charter. This seems to be much more common then when I started in the industry 10 years ago.

What superyacht recruiters are really on the lookout for, are qualified crew with a positive, can-do approach to work and an enthusiasm to hard graft.  As long as you’ve ticked those boxes and you’re honest about your tattoos, you shouldn’t have any problems finding work on board a luxury superyacht.

Are Superyacht Crew With Tattoos Still Less Likely To Find Work?

can yachties have tattoos

Many recruitment posts traditionally have stated ‘no-visible tattoos’, but with attitudes towards body art shifting worldwide, is it still true that superyacht crew with tattoos are less likely to find permanent work?

To answer the commonly asked question ‘can you work on a superyacht with tattoos?’, we reached out to tattooed crew members and seasoned recruiters to discover the current stance on body art within the industry.

Original sailing tattooed crew vs Superyacht Crew with tattoos?

The yachting industry only continues to grow in popularity, with many newcomers flocking to yachting hubs in hopes of landing their first yachting job (Below Deck has a lot to answer for), but what is the likelihood of permanent employment for visibly tattooed hopefuls?

Origin Of The Sailor Tattoo

Seafarer tattoos are believed to have originated in Polynesia and were brought to the West by Captain James Cook in the 1700s. Traditionally, tattoos served as markers of a sailor’s travels, indicating his beliefs, his role aboard the ship and his superstitions.

The tradition of tattooing continued to spread throughout the world’s Navies – bored seafarers would tattoo mementos of their travels to pass the time during long voyages. Other amusing tattoo trends emerged during the Second World War when the inking of a rooster and pig on each foot was popular, it was thought to prevent sailors from drowning.

Rooster and pig tattooed crew

Today, the culture surrounding marine industries has changed and a more ‘professional’ appearance is now considered more important. Perhaps this is especially true when considering the yachting industry, an industry that places a high value on discretion, image, and sleekness.

However, with many crew transitioning from commercial seafaring backgrounds where tattoos are likely to be less of an issue onboard, do tattooed crew struggle to find permanent positions on board private vessels?

“I’m finding that more often than not the experience is the clincher, and a great [crew member] won’t be turned down for an inoffensive tattoo”

Erica Lay started her recruitment career in 2007, working for The Crew Network . She moved on to YCO in 2008 before leaving at the end of 2012 to open her boutique agency EL CREW CO . For those of you who may be questioning ‘can yacht crew have tattoos?’, Lay may have some answers.

Lay has noticed that when it comes to recruiting tattooed crew, it depends largely on the position:

“Over the years I’ve generally had no issues placing engineers and chefs with tattoos, the problem seems to be more prevalent with client-facing roles such as interior and deck roles”

The now managing director of EL CREW CO feels that as general attitudes towards tattoos are changing within society, larger more visible tattoos are becoming more accepted:

“Tattoos [were once] reserved for military personnel, gang members, and prisoners. Tattoos have gone from crude basic inkings to works of art that often tell a very personal story”

– Lay elaborates.

As for a shift in attitude towards tattoos within the industry, Lay believes that experience is now of higher priority:

“For senior positions, I’m finding that more often than not the experience is the clincher, and a great chief stew won’t be turned down for an inoffensive tattoo. Chefs with tattoos aren’t an issue, nor are engineers. I’ve even worked with some sailing yacht owners who expect tattoos on their crew, as in their eyes it demonstrates a ‘real sailor’.”
“The attitude has changed, those who did not really ‘like’ [tattoos] in the past have learnt to accept them”

Maria Carnicelli, who has recruited crew for The Crew Network for three years, believes one reason for the ‘no visible tattoo’ request could be because of charter clients:

“ [On charter yachts] the nationality of clients varies, and there is no certainty that they are ok with tattoos. I believe that in this case the no tattoo policy is set in stone just to avoid creating any potential discontent of the client”

Like Lay, Carnicelli does however believe that due to the shifting worldwide acceptability of visible tattoos, the yachting industry is following suit:

“People with tattoos used to be compared to non-serious people, or people with bad habits. Now that at least 60% of the worldwide population has at least one tattoo. The attitude has changed and those who in the past did not really ‘like’ tattoos have learnt to accept them. As usual, this is something that relies on the culture and the age of the Owner.”
“At no point have I been affected by the fact I have visible tattoos. Sadly I’m aware this is not the case for all tattooed crew”

Christian Deakin, Chief Officer onboard a 42-metre motor yacht, agrees that there has been a noticeable shift in attitude in recent years:

“I remember looking at particular Facebook groups and recruitment websites before I joined the industry, and seeing that at least 50% of the posts said ‘No visible tattoos’, and thinking perhaps this is an industry I won’t be able to become a part of”.

Deakin has several tattoos, both visible in uniform and concealed. The pieces that are visible in uniform include a fully tattooed forearm and a 3/4 sleeve on his right arm, as well as a small ankle tattoo.

Whilst Deakin believes he has been fortunate that his tattoos have not prevented him from finding work, he understands this may not always be the case:

“I have done quite well at working my way up the ladder and at no point have I been affected by the fact I have visible tattoos. Sadly I’m aware this is not the case for all tattooed crew”.

Are Attitudes towards Tattooed Professionals Changing?

‘Finding The Right Boat’

Most seem to agree that for heavily tattooed folk, it has historically been a case of ‘finding the right boat’, with owners that are perhaps more open-minded. Perhaps then, it is the introduction of a new generation of yacht-owner that is set to be the catalyst for a change in attitude. Deakin echoes this:

“In my opinion times have changed, the mentality has changed worldwide not just in yachting. now everywhere you look you see people with tattoos. A lot of the new generation yacht owners have tattoos, so they are unlikely to say that their crew shouldn’t have them”.

Alexandra Post, who has worked on her current vessel for the last two years, explains how she had repeatedly been turned down by boats due to tattoos:

“I had many interviews with promising outcomes, only to have opportunities fall through as a result of my visible tattoos. I went through emotional rollercoasters continuously and ended up working in a bar close to a marina. I befriended a local, only later to learn that he was a yacht captain. He eventually hired me and gave me a chance to prove my work ethic”.

Post suggests that the yachting industry may not have previously accepted tattoos due to the concept of ‘purity’:

“ I think people’s opinion, in terms of upper-class industries, is that of ‘purity’. People with tattoos are often judged immediately based on their visible ink”.

But Post, now happily employed, also agrees that perhaps attitudes are changing and that perhaps now the onus is rightly on work ethic, and the individual approach of each crew member: “If crew with visible tattoos work just as hard as those that don’t, and can be respectful and presentable, attitudes will change. I believe all people can contribute to the industry, visible tattoos or not”

The Verdict

Many within the yachting industry are in agreement that although it has historically been difficult to gain acceptance as a crew member with visible ink, attitudes and connotations around tattoos are changing worldwide. Surely then the yachting industry will follow suit.

In air travel, it appears that body art is already becoming less of an issue for cabin crew. A recent article by Globe Trender revealed that:

“Virgin Atlantic has announced a change in policy regarding tattoos for its uniform wearers and front line staff – becoming the first British airline to allow employees to show their body art”.

Virgin Atlantic Tattooed Cabin Crew

Perhaps the yachting industry is not so far behind. The influx of a new generation of yacht owners may bring with it an overhaul of old ideals of what is deemed acceptable within the industry.

Now you may be reading this because you have a tattoo somewhere on your body and youre not entirely sure if it’s going to affect you getting a job on a yacht.

If you have tried to google the ‘Can I work on a yacht with a tattoo’ or read about it on Facebook groups you will find a mixed bag of answers so hopefully I can provide some insight

Firstly, do you have a tattoo? Is it visible? What type of boat are you hoping to work on, sail yacht or motor yacht? Is the tattoo offensive? Are you aiming to be a yacht stewardess? A deckhand? An Engineer?

There are a lot of factors to consider when you have a tattoo  and you’re trying to get a job onboard. The main one is if it is visible with a uniform on . So for females in the interior thats skort and polo dress for the males on deck thats shorts to the knee and a polo and for engineers you’re quite lucky as tattoos are generally more acceptable as you are more ‘behind the scenes’ not on show to the guests onboard.

If you have a visible tattoo don’t worry it is not the end of your not even started yachting career. Getting your first job in yachting with a tattoo may mean It could take slightly longer to get your first job or you may not be offered a certain role due to management policies or owner preferences however this doesn’t mean there aren’t other boats who don’t mind tattoos. Don’t just give up!

If you are dockwalking or going for an interview it is best to cover them up by wearing a long sleeve polo or trousers. Remember yachting is always about first impressions and we don;t want a bad one or the judgement which can come from tattoos.

So you may be wondering should I write on my resume that I have tattoos?

I would say yes and then put visible or not visible. You don’t want to waste anyones time, if it’s an owners preference the chief officer looking to hire has no say in this, he is simply following the rules.  The boat may ask for photos to clarify how visible the tattoo may be and to see it before they offer you a job. This is normal.

Which boats will be more likely to employ crew with tattoos?

It depends on a lot of factors like owner preference, management policiy, but generally speaking smaller yachts under 55m tend to be more relaxed about tattoos. And then there are sailing yachts which tend to be more casual so generally speaking tattoos aren’t as big of an issue as opposed to on larger motor yachts.

I have also found charter yachts are strict with employing crew without tattoos as they have a variety of guests onboard.

From my experience working on boats over 60m, the interior and exterior team have not had any visible tattoos. I actually got my small foot tattoo removed as I was conscious of it when I ‘had’ to go swimming with guests, it was not visible until I removed my shoe. I didn’t want it to an issue for future job roles so I just got it removed. Ouch and those machines hurt! However you don’t have to do this, I have a friend on a sailing boat who has dainty tattoos all up her arm, it’s not a problem. And another friend who has smaller arm tattoos and she worked on 55m motor yacht and also on some really fabulous boats! It’s not impossible … however it will definitely be harder  to find work with visible tattoos.  There are more sail yachts willing to take on crew with tattoos than motor yachts. Just make sure that your skills and your work ethic exceeds any issues anyone can have with your tattoos.

You may have to put in a bit of extra time and effort in securing a position but ultimately there will be a boat which will see beyond your body art and employ you based on the fact you are good at your job and a good candidate

Crew Advice

Do tattoos spell the end of your yachting career before it’s begun? 22 November 2017

As a green deckhand searching for a job in the South of France a few years ago and having a half sleeve tattoo I know all too well how hard getting that first job can be.

Arriving in Antibes I felt like I was the only person with a tattoo on show looking for a job on a yacht. People would often ask “don’t you want to get that lasered off” or make a comment such as “you’ll never get a job with a tattoo on your arm”. It was hard to hear this knowing I had given up my well paid, secure job at home and was living out a suitcase in a crew house, eating pesto pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner to make my savings last longer. It made me feel like I had been so very stupid a few years before to get inked. However at the age of 17 how was I to know a whole new world of yachting would present itself to me and become a job I was so desperate to secure?

Never the less I didn’t let it stop me and I finally got a break working on a 45m in Nice for the winter. 2 years on and I had worked on two prestigious boats in the industry, been to some of the most beautiful parts of the world, crossed the Atlantic, been to Bora Bora, made lifelong friends and saved myself a deposit for my first house.

There are several questions people ask me:

1. Can I get a job in yachting if I have tattoos?

Firstly it is possible to get a job on a yacht with a tattoo. I think recently views on tattoos within the industry have relaxed slightly. It seems that most people working on yachts now have a tattoo of some kind whether it be hidden or visible. Obviously, if you plan to get into yachting I would advise against rushing out and getting one. You won’t be doing yourself any favours. But if like me you already have tattoos then don’t let it put you off. It may take slightly longer to get your first job or you may not be offered a certain role due to management policies or owner preferences but this doesn’t mean there aren’t other boats who don’t mind tattoos.

2. Should I cover them up?

I would strongly suggest you mention your tattoos on your CV. This means that when it comes to employment your tattoo won’t suddenly become a problem wasting both yours and the boat’s time. Whilst interviewing definitely cover them up and be well presented, you want to make the best impression possible. If you have tattoos on your arms or legs try and cover these with long sleeve polos or shirts and a long pair of trousers/chinos whilst dock walking. Some people try using makeup to cover tattoos but I often found this rubbed off or would make items of clothing dirty, especially if wearing white!

3. Which boats will be more likely to employ me?

There are boats out there that do not have a problem with tattoos. I have worked on a boat where I was the only deckhand with a tattoo and on another where I was one of many guys on deck with tattoos. You will mostly find that private yachts are less likely to mind whereas charter boats usually won’t employ people with tattoos but this isn’t always set in stone. If you are an engineer your tattoos are less likely to be a problem.

Don’t let your tattoos hold you back

You may have to put in a bit of extra time and effort in securing a position but ultimately there will be a boat which will see beyond your body art and employ you based on the fact you are good at your job and a good candidate. Once you have some solid experience under your belt things get a lot easier and you tend to have more options of boats you can work on. The advice I would give initially is, if you have tattoos take any opportunity you have to get on a yacht. Ultimately experience will help you secure that next great position. Finally, if you are toying with the idea of getting one and haven’t don’t! There is a strong chance you will live to regret your ink. Good luck!

  • How to become a Yachtie

So you’re thinking about becoming a Yachtie?

You may have a friend or relative who already works in the industry, or you have watched TV programmes like Below Deck , you know working on a yacht is the right for you, but where do you start?

With the potential to earn great money, travel, and work with loads of like-minded people, it’s not surprising this job ticks a lot of boxes for many people.

Becoming a Yachtie and getting paid to work on luxury yachts may seem like a job and industry that only the elite can have access to, or it just seems too confusing to start.

However, with an understanding of the requirements, certification, and having some expectations of what job role you should be looking for, starting work as a Yachtie will not seem so daunting.

What is a Yachtie?

Before we go any further, let’s make sure we are all singing off the same hymn sheet.

A Yachtie is a broad term used to describe anyone who works on a yacht. More specifically, it has become the term for people working as yacht crew on superyachts.

A superyacht is a very large boat that is extremely luxurious and often owned by multi millionaires and billionaires.

These Yachties who work on superyachts hold a number of different positions. Most Yachties will start their superyacht career working as a Deckhand or Stewardess. With more experience and responsibilities, your role will change as you progress up the career ladder.

It’s worth noting there are other types of yachting and Yachties. The other kind of ‘Yachtie’ could describe those who hold their Yachtmaster qualification and have jobs like skipper charter boats.

Job roles for new Yachties

Yachties new to the industry (also known as ‘Green’ Yachties) will traditionally apply for entry levels roles, which are Yacht Deckhands or Yacht Stewardesses.

These are both very different jobs, so you need to be sure which one you want to do and start training for that career path.

Yacht Stewardess (Stew)

A Stewardess, or Steward , looks after the interior of the yacht. This means anything that happens inside the boat, you will be responsible for it.

Think of any job in the hospitality industry and then combine it into one role on a yacht, that is what you will be doing.

From making beds, doing the laundry, cleaning, serving food, and hosting dinner, you will do it all to a 5-star standard. Anything less than perfect, and your guests won’t be satisfied.

It’s the small things that make the difference between high standards and exceptional standards. You must have a great eye for detail and be able to make sure no stone is left unturned. Everything on board the ship must be 100% perfect at all times.

You will be reporting to Chief Stew, who will be your manager and give you your task list. After a good few seasons as a green Stewardess, you will have enough experience and confidence to apply for Chief Stewardess roles.

Yacht Deckhand

In contrast to the Stewardess role, Deckhands look after the exterior of the boat.

Predominantly a male role, Deckhands will do everything from general maintenance to cleaning the teak deck, looking after the toys (Jet Skis, etc.), and even driving the tenders.

Deckhands should know how a yacht operates, the basic terminology used onboard, how to tie knots, and loads and loads of enthusiasm.

Deckhands may also dip in and out of helping the Stewardesses, and it isn’t uncommon for Deckhands to give a hand during busy evening meal preparation and service.

5 steps to Becoming a Yachtie

With an understanding of the job roles available, you can now decide which one best suits you. With the right attitude, qualifications, and knowing where to look for work, becoming a Yachtie is achievable for anyone who wants it.

  • Have the right attitude
  • Pass an ENG1 medical
  • Complete STCW Basic Safety Training
  • Gain experience
  • Go to a superyacht marina

1. Have the right attitude

Along with gaining the correct qualifications to prove your competence, to become a Yachtie, you must have certain characteristics to thrive in this industry.

Yachties have to be well presented, articulate, know how to take orders, and be able to work hard, all with a smile and enthusiasm. You have to be able to work incredibly long hours, sometimes under stressful conditions, without losing your patience.

Having a job on a superyacht may sound glamorous, but if it’s your 10th day working in a row and you’ve got your head stuck down a toilet trying to clean it, you may want to think again. To become a Yachtie, you have to be happy with spending a lot of time away from home without seeing your friends and family. This may all seem obvious, but this situation does not suit everyone, and without careful consideration of the negatives, you will leave this industry quicker than when you arrived.

2. Pass ENG1 Medical

The first actionable step you need to take to become a Yachtie is gaining an ENG1 medical certificate. The ENG1 medical is an examination by an approved MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) Doctor to make sure you are fit and able to work at sea.

Every single person working at sea must have an ENG1 medical certificate , without this, you are not able to start working on superyachts. The examination will take around 45 minutes, during which the doctor will go through a checklist to make sure you have no underlying health conditions that may impact the safety of you or anyone else on board the ship.

The most common reason new yachties fail the ENG1 is colour blindness. Surprisingly many people can go through their whole life without knowing they are colour blind. However, on board a ship, this can have huge implications. If you cannot identify signals and lights correctly, it will be impossible for you to help navigate the ship in an emergency. Unfortunately, this means you cannot start work as a Yachtie.

3. Complete STCW Basic Safety Training

Another requirement for working at sea is completing STCW Basic Safety Training . Similar to the ENG1 you can only get a job on a yacht if you have the STCW certificate.

STCW stands for ‘Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping’. It is to make sure that all Seafarers have an understanding of what to do in an emergency and are aware of the procedures required.

STCW Courses are action-packed and quite a bit of fun. From fire fighting to sea survival, you will get stuck in learning, and learn loads of new skills.

4. Gain experience

If you are lucky enough to have a job offer on a superyacht, then having your ENG1 and STCW certificates will be enough.

Don’t worry if you haven’t already got a job offer, it’s quite normal to go through all these steps and not have a job lined up yet. If this is the case, gaining more experience and qualifications is a good idea to give you a competitive advantage over anyone else applying for the same job role.

This is achieved through signing up to a Deckhand or Stewardess Course. On these courses, you will get your standard STCW certificate and a list of extra qualifications demonstrating your competence, ability, and commitment to the industry.

Deckhands will learn how to drive a small yacht, engine maintenance, general yacht repair, and how to clean teak properly. Stewardesses will understand wine and how to serve it, the art of flower arranging, and how to drive a powerboat.

5. Go to a superyacht marina

After you have completed your superyacht training, now is the time to head out to France and look for work. Along with signing up to yacht crew recruitment agencies, going to one of the main superyacht marinas and handing out your CV to Captains is a great way to find work. This is known as dockwalking.

If you complete your Superyacht Course with us, you will have the option of signing up to our recruitment day in Antibes, France. We head out to France as a group, talk you through the process and offer you our industry contacts.

This is a great way to start your journey, and all our students find work in no time.

How much do Yachties make?

So you’ve heard you can make a good amount of money working on superyachts? Along with the travel, the great salary is why many people decide to become a Yachtie.

Like a job within any industry, salary varies. A Superyacht will agree on a crew salary budget with the owner of the yacht.

If you are just starting out, you can expect a salary of around €2,200 – €3,200 per month. However, the industry standard is €2,500 per month. Once you gain more experience and qualifications, your salary will increase.

When you look at the salary at face value, it looks great but not incredible, however when you are at sea, you have zero outgoings. Working on a yacht means you don’t have to pay rent, bills, or buy food which will save you heaps of money compared with working at home.

If you want to see the salaries of all yacht crew, check out our Salary Guide.

Do Yachties pay taxes?

Another reason why the salary is so appealing is that in most cases Yachties don’t have to pay tax.

This is a government scheme called the Seafarers Earning Deduction , and providing you are eligible, Yachties can keep 100% of their earnings.

To be able to apply for Seafarers Earning Deduction, you must be working on a ship outside of UK waters for a period of 365 days. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a whole year at once away from home, rather you can only apply once all the days you work on a yacht adds up to 365.

Being able to understand this tax scheme will be hugely beneficial before you start working on a Superyacht.

Maritime cultures have a deep and enduring relationship with tattooing. For centuries, sailors from different parts of the world have used tattoos as a form of self-expression, a rite of passage, and a way to ward off bad luck during their perilous journeys at sea. These tattoos often depict nautical themes and symbols, reflecting the sailors’ experiences and beliefs.

The tradition of sailor tattoos can be traced back to the 18th century, when Captain James Cook and his crew returned from their voyage to the South Pacific. They brought back not only tales of their adventures but also tattoos, a practice they picked up from the Polynesian people. This sparked a trend among sailors, and soon, tattoos became an integral part of maritime culture.

As we navigate through this article, we will explore more about the significance of traditional sailor tattoos, the history of nautical tattoos, and the various tattooing practices in maritime cultures. We will also delve into some historical maritime tattoo designs and their meanings. So, let’s set sail on this fascinating journey into the world of maritime tattoo history.

Traditional Sailor Tattoos and their Significance

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of traditional sailor tattoos. These designs are not just beautiful, they also carry deep meanings and significance. They were often used by sailors to express their beliefs, superstitions, and experiences.

Nautical Tattoos Significance

Understanding the significance of nautical tattoos requires a look into the symbolism behind popular designs and the role these tattoos played in sailor superstitions and beliefs.

  • Symbolism behind popular sailor tattoo designs:

Every sailor tattoo tells a story. For instance, the anchor tattoo symbolizes stability and a strong foundation, reflecting a sailor’s hope to always return home safely. Swallow tattoos, on the other hand, were believed to ensure a safe journey, as swallows always find their way back to land. The nautical star, a popular design, was seen as a guiding light, helping sailors navigate through rough seas.

  • Role of tattoos in sailor superstitions and beliefs:

Tattoos were more than just body art for sailors; they were deeply intertwined with their beliefs and superstitions. Sailors believed that certain tattoos could ward off bad luck or bring good fortune. For example, a pig tattooed on one foot and a rooster on the other was believed to prevent a sailor from drowning. This belief stemmed from the observation that these animals were often the only survivors of shipwrecks, as their wooden crates would float.

In conclusion, traditional sailor tattoos were not just about aesthetics. They were a form of self-expression, a way to tell stories, and a reflection of deeply held beliefs and superstitions. So, the next time you see a sailor tattoo, remember, there’s likely a fascinating story behind it!

Examples of Traditional Sailor Tattoos

Let’s delve into some of the most popular traditional sailor tattoos, their meanings, and the stories behind them. These tattoos were not just for decoration, but they also served as symbols of experiences, beliefs, and superstitions among sailors.

  • Anchor Tattoos

The anchor tattoo is one of the most recognizable sailor tattoos. It symbolizes stability and a strong foundation. Sailors would get an anchor tattoo after successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It was a mark of their seafaring experience and a symbol of their hope to always stay grounded, no matter how rough the seas may get.

  • Swallow Tattoos

Swallow tattoos are another popular choice among sailors. These birds are known for their long migration patterns, always finding their way back home. For sailors, a swallow tattoo symbolized the hope of a safe return home. It was believed that if a sailor perished at sea, the swallow would carry their soul to heaven.

  • Nautical Star Tattoos

Nautical star tattoos are a symbol of guidance and protection. The nautical star, or North Star, has been used for centuries by sailors for navigation. Having this tattoo was a way for sailors to ensure they would always find their way, even in the darkest of nights. It was a symbol of their reliance on the stars for direction and their faith in the journey ahead.

  • Mermaid Tattoos

Mermaid tattoos are steeped in mystery and allure, much like the mythical creatures themselves. To sailors, mermaids represented both the beauty and the danger of the sea. A mermaid tattoo was a reminder of the seductive pull of the ocean, and the respect sailors must have for its power.

These tattoos were more than just ink on skin; they were a part of a sailor’s identity, a visual diary of their adventures and experiences. They were a testament to their resilience, their courage, and their unwavering hope in the face of adversity.

History of Nautical Tattoos

Delving into the fascinating world of nautical tattoos, we must journey back in time to understand their origins and significance. The history of sailor tattoos is as deep and complex as the ocean itself, with roots in ancient seafaring cultures and a significant impact on European sailors.

Early History of Nautical Tattoos

The early history of nautical tattoos is a captivating tale of tradition, symbolism, and identity. Let’s explore the origins of these tattoos and their adoption by European sailors.

  • Origins of Sailor Tattoos in Ancient Seafaring Cultures

Long before the advent of modern navigation tools, ancient seafaring cultures relied on the stars, the wind, and their instincts to traverse the vast oceans. Tattoos played a crucial role in these journeys, serving not just as body art, but as symbols of protection, good luck, and a testament to their experiences at sea.

For instance, the Polynesian culture is renowned for its intricate tattoo designs, which were believed to provide spiritual guidance and protection during their sea voyages. Similarly, the Maori people of New Zealand used tattoos, or ‘moko’, as a form of identification, status symbol, and a reflection of their seafaring achievements.

  • Adoption of Tattoos by European Sailors

As European explorers ventured into the Pacific and came into contact with these tattooing traditions, they began to adopt this form of body art. The 18th-century British explorer Captain James Cook is often credited with introducing the concept of tattoos to Europe. His crew returned from their Pacific voyages adorned with tattoos, sparking curiosity and fascination among the European populace.

For European sailors, tattoos became a form of self-expression and a record of their travels. Common designs included anchors, ships, and swallows, each carrying a specific meaning. For example, an anchor tattoo signified stability and a safe return home, while a swallow represented the hope of new beginnings after a long voyage.

In conclusion, the early history of nautical tattoos is a testament to the human spirit of exploration, survival, and identity. These tattoos, deeply rooted in ancient seafaring cultures and later adopted by European sailors, have left an indelible mark on maritime history and continue to influence modern tattoo culture.

Modern History of Nautical Tattoos

As we sail forward in time, we observe a significant evolution in the designs and meanings of sailor tattoos. This evolution has not only shaped the tattoo culture within the maritime community but has also left a profound impact on the modern tattoo culture at large.

  • Evolution of Sailor Tattoo Designs Over Time

From the early days of seafaring, sailor tattoos have undergone a fascinating transformation. Initially, these tattoos were simple symbols, like an anchor or a ship, that represented a sailor’s life at sea. However, as time passed, these designs became more intricate and symbolic.

In the 19th century, for example, a sailor with a dragon tattoo was believed to have served in China or had crossed the equator. Similarly, a fully rigged ship tattoo signified that the sailor had sailed around Cape Horn, one of the most dangerous sea routes. A turtle standing on its back legs was a symbol of crossing the equator and initiation into the ‘Order of the Shellback’.

Today, sailor tattoos have evolved to include a wide range of designs, from traditional nautical symbols to more personalized and artistic expressions. This evolution reflects the changing attitudes and experiences of sailors, as well as the broader societal changes.

  • Influence of Maritime Tattoos on Modern Tattoo Culture

The rich history and symbolism of sailor tattoos have had a significant influence on the modern tattoo culture. The bold lines and iconic designs of sailor tattoos have become a source of inspiration for many modern tattoo artists and enthusiasts.

Moreover, the tradition of getting a tattoo to commemorate a significant event or achievement, which was popular among sailors, has also become a common practice in the modern tattoo culture. This influence is a testament to the enduring appeal and significance of sailor tattoos.

In conclusion, the modern history of nautical tattoos is a captivating journey of evolution and influence. These tattoos have not only evolved in design and meaning but have also shaped the modern tattoo culture in significant ways. As we continue to navigate through the vast ocean of tattoo art, the legacy of sailor tattoos remains a guiding star, illuminating the path ahead.

Maritime Cultures and Tattooing Practices

Throughout history, tattoos have played a significant role in the maritime cultures around the world. From the Pacific Islands to the Nordic regions, tattoos have been used to symbolize various aspects of seafaring life. Let’s explore some of these traditions.

Sailor Tattoo Traditions in Different Cultures

Each maritime culture has its unique tattoo traditions. These practices often reflect the beliefs, values, and experiences of the sailors. We will focus on two distinct maritime cultures: the Pacific Islander and the Nordic cultures.

  • Tattoo practices in Pacific Islander seafaring cultures

In Pacific Islander cultures, tattoos are more than just body art. They are a form of communication, telling stories of the wearer’s identity, status, and achievements. For sailors, their tattoos often depict sea creatures, waves, and other nautical symbols. These designs are not only aesthetically pleasing, but they also serve as protection against the dangers of the sea.

  • Tattoo traditions in Nordic maritime cultures

In contrast, Nordic sailors preferred more symbolic tattoos. They often chose designs related to their mythology, such as the hammer of Thor for strength or the compass to ensure a safe journey. These tattoos were believed to provide the sailors with protection and guidance during their voyages.

Despite the differences in their tattoo practices, both Pacific Islander and Nordic sailors shared a common belief in the power of tattoos. They saw their tattoos as more than just decorations – they were a part of their identity, a testament to their experiences, and a source of protection against the unpredictable nature of the sea.

Case Study: Tattooing in Japanese Seafaring Cultures

Let’s dive into the fascinating world of Japanese maritime tattoos. We’ll explore their history and the rich symbolism behind these unique designs.

  • History of Tattooing in Japanese Maritime Cultures

Tattooing has a long history in Japan, with the earliest evidence dating back to the Jomon period (10,000 B.C. to 300 B.C.). However, it was during the Edo period (1603-1868) that tattooing flourished among Japanese seafarers.

Japanese sailors, known as ‘wakashu’, used tattoos as a form of identification. These tattoos were not just decorative; they served a practical purpose. If a sailor was lost at sea or died, his tattoos would help identify him. This was especially important as many sailors could not read or write.

The art of tattooing was passed down from master to apprentice, with each generation adding their own unique touch. The designs were often inspired by folklore, religious beliefs, and nature.

  • Significance and Symbolism of Japanese Sailor Tattoos

Japanese sailor tattoos are rich in symbolism. Each design has a specific meaning, often linked to the beliefs and experiences of the seafaring community.

For example, the ‘koi’ (carp) is a popular design. In Japanese folklore, the koi is known for its strength and perseverance. It is said to swim upstream against the current, symbolizing the sailor’s resilience in the face of adversity.

Another common design is the ‘tora’ (tiger). The tiger is considered a protector against evil spirits and bad luck. Sailors often had a tiger tattooed on their chest or back for protection during their dangerous voyages.

The ‘ryu’ (dragon) is also a popular design. The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck. It is often depicted in a swirling sea, representing the sailor’s life at sea.

These are just a few examples of the rich symbolism in Japanese sailor tattoos. Each tattoo tells a story, reflecting the sailor’s life, beliefs, and experiences.

In conclusion, Japanese sailor tattoos are a fascinating blend of art, history, and symbolism. They offer a unique insight into the lives and beliefs of Japanese seafarers, making them a valuable part of maritime history.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meanings

What is the meaning of anchor and mermaid tattoos

Nautical tattoos speak their own language, and if you understand the symbolism and meanings behind them you can discern tons of information about a sailor without needing to speak a word. There are plenty of things in this information age that come and go, but the meanings behind nautical tattoos are as steadfast as the sailors who proudly wear them. Let's take a look at some of the most common nautical tattoos and the stories behind them from head to toe.

Speaking of head to toe, you'll want to make sure that your vessel is clean from bow to stern with our boat wash soap concentrate! That squeaky clean look won't be complete without a once over with our marine metal polish . The days of dirty ships and grizzled sailors is a thing of the past, we are only bringing the good parts of sailing into the future... Like all of the awesome symbolic tattoos!

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning tattoo gun grayscale

Swallow(s):

For every 5000 nautical miles traveled a dedicated sailor might choose to decorate his body with another swallow. Why this bird in particular? Well, swallows are migratory birds that will travel 6000 miles from the UK to the Sahara in order to avoid the UK's inclement winters. If only sailors had a choice in the matter. Unlike those lucky birds, we must brave whatever comes.

Full Rigged Ship:

One of the only nautical tattoos on our list that I'd actually not be qualified to wear is a ship with full rigging . This tattoo symbolizes that a sailor has made their way around Cape Horn. The southernmost tip of South America features some rough waters, but fewer and fewer people qualify for this nautical tattoo thanks to the building of the Panama Canal.

Nautical Star:

A nautical star is a sailing tattoo that represents the north star. You can find this one anywhere on the body but the forearms or collarbone seem to be the most popular choices from what I've seen. With a nautical star adorning their body, a sailor will never need to worry about being lost. If they do end up lost, this star is sure to guide them back home.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning artistic arm

Shellback Turtle:

If you see a sailor with a turtle tattoo it means that they've been initiated into Neptune's court. How does one get initiated into Neptune's court? By crossing the equator, of course! This is another one that can be seen almost anywhere though I've seen quite a few shellbacks on shoulders, calves, and the old reliable forearm.

Crossed Cannons:

Everyone that I served with had the distinction of being qualified for the crossed cannons. Not really a huge surprise, considering that we were all serving in the Navy. Yes indeed, this nautical tattoo represents naval military service. Whenever I see someone with a pair of crossed cannons I know for sure that we have at least one topic that we can discuss at great length.

A single anchor might symbolize that the person you're looking at is a merchant marine. Alternatively, it could mean that a sailor has crossed the Atlantic. Usually it means both at the same time. Those merchant marines tend to get around! It might also mean neither... I've met my fair share of sailors that simply got an anchor tattoo because they enjoyed boating. Nothing wrong with that. The meaning is becoming a bit diluted however so if there is any doubt? Just ask!

The one and only place you can find hula girls is Hawaii, so I suppose it makes good sense that a sailor would want to leave the island with a souvenir inked into their skin. I really like this tattoo if it's placed in just the right spot on your forearm you can make that little hula girl dance. Might not seem like much but after 6 months at sea? You'll be glad to have it! Haha.

Nautical Tattoos: Symbolism and Meaning in progress tat

If you see a braided rope tattooed around a sailor's wrist indicates that a sailor works as a deckhand, or at least served some time working as a deckhand. If I spent as much time around rope as the average deckhand, a tattoo of rope is the last thing I'd want but you can't fight tradition!

Crossed Anchors:

A pair of crossed anchors on the webbing between the thumb and forefinger signifies that sailor as a boswain's mate . The duties of a boswain's mate are extremely varied, but they do all require some degree of teamwork which is illustrated by the two anchors coming together.

"HOLD FAST":

Tattoos across the knuckles are pretty cool, but they aren't for everyone. I've heard people call them 'everlasting job stoppers' and that isn't far from the truth, but if you're willing to put in some hard physical labor then getting hired is a given. HOLD FAST is a nautical tattoo for your knuckles that supposedly increases your grip on lines and rigging. I might've gotten this one myself, but instead I went for "PROU DOFU".

Pig and/or Rooster:

You might see a sailor with a pig or rooster tattooed on their feet. Once upon a time these were common nautical tattoos for sailors who didn't know how to swim. These days finding a sailor who doesn't know how to swim is akin to searching out a needle in a haystack, but these foot tattoos are still thought to stop people from drowning.

We've got more nautical superstitions to discuss if you're interested!

Richard Hart, a 60-year-old man revealing his obscene tattoo design of a naked woman, holding a glass of beer.

Can you stomach this ink?

A man has “no regrets” about this obscene tattoo stretching down his midriff, which depicts a naked woman with her legs spread wide open.

It only took four hours and less than $70 for Richard Hart, 60, to get his hand-drawn design inked for his 40th birthday in South Wales — and says most people aren’t fazed by the bizarre design.

“If I had a pound for everyone who has asked to have a photo with it I’d be a very rich man,” he told Southwest News Service.

Richard Hart, a 60-year-old man with a controversial tattoo of a naked woman on his chest that almost got him arrested by Spanish police

However, law enforcement aren’t always as amused by the X-rated tatt.

When Hart visited Spain, cops even threatened to arrest him if he didn’t cover the ink up with a shirt.

“I was in Benidorm and it was boiling hot, I took my top off and two police came and told me to cover up or they would handcuff me,” Hart, a retired bar owner, recalled.

“We got into a bit of an argument — I had to wear a t-shirt for the rest of the holiday.”

Hart's tattoo

Hart was initially inspired by his tattoo artist’s brother, who had “a naked lady tattooed on him,” and thought he “could go one further.”

“Obviously it is a bit obscene, but it never bothers me,” he said of the ink, which he’s now had plastered on his tummy for two decades.

Hart’s partner, 66-year-old Kay Ritchie, isn’t bothered by the obscene ink, and Hart says both his daughter Melissa, 38, and his son Alex, 35, are “fine” with it.

However, he admitted: “I do have to cover it up in front of the grandchildren though.”

What does the Bible say about tattoos? Is God okay with Christians having tattoos? These are difficult and controversial questions in the body of Christ and many believers struggle, wondering if getting a tattoo is a sin .

Question for Reflection

Instead of asking, "Is it okay for Christians to get tattoos?" a better question might be, "Is it okay for me to get a tattoo?"

What Does the Bible Say?

The Bible says in Leviticus 19:28, "Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the Lord." (NLT)

That seems pretty clear, right? But maybe not.

It's important to look at the verse in context. This particular passage and the surrounding verses in the book of Leviticus are specifically dealing with the pagan religious rituals of the heathen nations living around the Israelites at that time. God desires to set his people apart from other cultures. The focus here is prohibiting worldly idol worship and witchcraft . God forbids his holy people to engage in idolatrous worship and sorcery which imitates those who are ungodly. He commands against it out of protection and love, because he knows it will lead his people away from the one true God.

It's interesting to observe Leviticus 19:26: "Do not eat meat that has not been drained of its blood," and verse 27, "Do not trim off the hair on your temples or trim your beards." Well, certainly many Christians today eat non-kosher meats, get haircuts, and trim their beards. We don't accuse them of participating in the forbidden practices of pagans. In ancient times, these customs were associated with pagan rites and rituals. Today they are not.

To Tattoo or Not To?

Still, the important question remains: Is getting a tattoo a form of pagan, worldly worship forbidden by God today, or is it okay now for Christians to get tattoos? Perhaps the correct and most appropriate answer is both yes and no. If so, the question likely falls into a category that Bible scholars have dubbed " disputable matters " based on Romans 14.

In this chapter, the apostle Paul urges believers to stop judging one another and disrupting unity in the church over nonessential matters in the Christian life. As God's servants, Christians are accountable to the Lord alone. In matters where the Bible is unclear, we are better off judging ourselves only and leaving the judgment of others to God.

In Romans 14, God gives us the means to judge our motives and weigh our decisions. Verse 23 states, "...everything that does not come from faith is sin." Now that's pretty clear.

It's vital to examine your heart and your motives before you make the decision to get a tattoo. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

What are my motives for wanting a tattoo? Am I seeking to glorify God or draw attention to myself? Will my tattoo be a source of contention for my loved ones? Will getting a tattoo cause me to disobey my parents? Will my tattoo cause someone who is weak in the faith to stumble?

Here is a self-exam based on the ideas put forth in Romans 14. These questions will help you decide whether or not getting a tattoo is a sin for you:

  • Do I have freedom in Christ and a clear conscience before the Lord regarding the decision to get a tattoo?
  • Am I passing judgment on a brother or sister because I don't have freedom in Christ to receive a tattoo?
  • Will I still want the tattoo years from now?
  • Will my parents and family approve, and/or will my future spouse want me to have this tattoo?
  • Will I cause a weaker brother or sister to stumble if I receive a tattoo?
  • Is my decision based on faith and will the result be glorifying to God?

Ultimately, the decision to get a tattoo is between you and God. There is a right choice for each individual. Take some time to honestly answer these questions and then pray and trust God to show you what to do.

Final Things to Consider

As you grapple with the spiritual questions involved with getting a tattoo, remember to carefully weigh the health risks involved with getting a tattoo . Also, since tattoos are permanent, be sure to consider the possibility that you could regret your decision in the future. Although removal is possible, it is more expensive and painful.

Can Pilots Have Tattoos?

Are Tattoos Allowed as a Pilot?

Common airline tattoo policy, why do airlines not allow pilot tattoos, what about small tattoos, what to do if you want to become a pilot but have a tattoo, cover up your tattoo, get laser treatment, look for an airline with a more relaxed tattoo policy, avoid the airlines, choose another career, the future of pilots and tattoos.

Tattoos are becoming increasingly popular, with almost one-fourth of American adults having at least one. While tattoos used to be taboo, they are now widely accepted in most workplaces. But can pilots have tattoos? The answer is yes – but there are a few conditions.

Generally, airlines do not permit pilots or crew to have any tattoos that are visible while they are wearing their uniforms.

Pilot tattoos are a polarizing topic. Some people believe they should be more widely allowed in aviation, while others think they should be banned altogether.

The fact is that tattoos are becoming more and more popular, and many companies – including some airlines – have started to accept visible tattoos. However, there are still some restrictions in place. Let’s take a closer look at the rules around pilot tattoos.

Most airlines have a similar policy when it comes to tattoos. They allow pilot tattoos as long as they are not visible while on duty and do not contain any offensive content. This means that any tattoos on the hands, neck, or face must be covered up while on duty.

If you want to fly for an airline and want to get a tattoo, it’s best to check their specific policy before getting inked.

Any tattoos or modifications that could be perceived as offensive or promoting sexual, racial, ethnic, or religious discrimination are not tolerated.

There are a few reasons why airlines do not allow visible tattoos. The first is the appearance of professionalism. Airlines want passengers to feel safe on board an aircraft. A large part of how passengers interpret the flight comes down to the appearance and demeanor of the crew. Visible tattoos are viewed as unprofessional by many airlines.

The airlines also don’t want any offensive or obscene images in the cabin. Finally, they don’t want their employees to set themselves apart from the rest of the crew.

Unity among flight crew is an integral part of projecting a professional and competent image.

Even if your tattoo is small and partially covered by your uniform, it may impact your chances of getting hired. Additionally, many airlines have strict policies against any visible tattoos, regardless of size.

In some cases, you may be able to get around this policy by wearing a long-sleeved shirt or jacket that covers the tattoo completely. But if you want to play it safe, it’s best to avoid small tattoos altogether.

You have a few options if you want to become a pilot but have a visible tattoo.

You can cover up your tattoo with makeup or clothing. This is the most common solution for pilots who have tattoos. If you choose to go this route, make sure that your tattoo is completely covered and can’t be seen while in uniform.

You can also get laser treatment to remove your tattoo. This is a more expensive and painful option and may not be completely effective (depending on the tattoo), but it will allow you to meet the requirements of most airlines.

Some airlines are starting to relax their policies on tattoos. For example, Alaska Airlines and United Airlines allow small visible tattoos as long as they are not offensive.

If you want to become a pilot, consider applying to one of these airlines.

Another option is to look into joining a different type of aviation company. There are plenty of great opportunities in general aviation and corporate aviation, where companies are far more relaxed about tattoos.

If you’re not willing to cover up your visible tattoos or get them removed, you may have to look into other career options.

There are a few airlines and aviation companies that are more accepting of visible tattoos, but they are the exception, not the norm.

The rules around pilot tattoos will likely continue to evolve in the coming years. As more and more people get tattoos, employers will become more accepting of them.

Previous generations often had negative associations with people who had tattoos, but most younger generations don’t have the same associations. With an increase in the number of people who get a tattoo every year, the future generation is more likely to have tattoos, and airlines will probably relax their policies eventually.

However, there will likely always be some restrictions in place to prevent certain types of tattoos from offending passengers and other crew members.

If you want to become a pilot, it’s best not to get any visible tattoos. Airlines have a policy against allowing pilots with visible tattoos while in uniform.

If you don’t have any tattoos yet, think carefully before getting one – it could affect your ability to get hired as a pilot in the future.

Navy Tattoo Policy for 2023

Navy Tattoo Policy For 2020

Body art like tattoos is a way to represent yourself.

Unfortunately, certain organizations still frown upon tattoos and other types of body art.

Despite the military having strict standards for personal grooming, it has actually relaxed many of its previous rules on tattoos.

What is the Navy tattoo policy for 2023?

The Navy has one of the most relaxed tattoo policies of any military branch but there are still certain restrictions.

The main takeaways regarding the policies are:

  • You CAN have a single tattoo on your neck, provided it’s less than 1 inch in diameter
  • You CAN have full-sleeve tattoos
  • Hand tattoos, including ring tattoos, are also allowed
  • You CANNOT have tattoos on your head, face, ears, or scalp
  • Offensive, racist, extremist, and sexist tattoos are NOT allowed.
  • Cosmetic tattoos performed by a licensed medical professional are now permitted.

Here’s a more detailed discussion of the policies.

Jump To A Section

What tattoos are allowed in the navy.

navy tattoo policy

Tattoos in the United States actually have origins in the Navy.

Sailors were some of the first to start getting body ink after touring Southeast Asia, where the tradition was already common.

As a result, the U.S. Navy has observed looser rules and standards when it comes to tattoos compared to other military branches .

The Navy recently changed some of its grooming standards in 2016 , including far fewer rules regarding tattoos.

The policy was also been updated to allow a single tattoo on the neck (as long as it’s less than one inch in diameter).

Additionally, tattoos below the knees and elbows are now allowed regardless of the quantity or size.

navy tattoo sleeves

Therefore, sailors are no longer regulated by the number of tattoos on their arms or legs, meaning service members can have full sleeves.

This is good news for Navy SEALs, as they tend to have an affinity for full-sleeve tattoos.

What Tattoos Are NOT Allowed In The Navy?

tattoos not allowed in navy

The U.S. Navy, like the other branches of the military, operated for decades without changing tattoo policies.

However, as tattoos have become much more of a social norm, the U.S. Armed Forces has begun to relax its standards.

Regardless, there are still certain standards you need to follow in order to qualify for the Navy.

While neck tattoos were once not permitted, the ink needs to remain small and under one inch in diameter.

Secondly, tattoos are still not allowed on the head, face, ears, or scalp.

navy face tattoo

Since body art is such a diverse subject with an endless list of images one can ink to their body, it is difficult for the U.S. military to create a list of everything the organization does not allow.

Consequently, the Navy grants permission to a commanding officer to determine what is acceptable and what is not allowed.

The U.S. Navy has zero tolerance when it comes to body ink that is considered “offensive, racist, sexist, extremist, or discrediting America.”

navy racist tattoo

Tattoos may also not discriminate against national origin or religion, even if the ink is covered under a uniform.

illegal navy tattoos

Any body art that suggests gang affiliation or the use of illegal substances is also not permitted.

Lastly, body mutilation is not allowed in any regard in the U.S. Navy.

It includes tongue forking, skin modification (including intentional scarring), intentional burns to create designs on the skin, or any type of dental ornamentation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

There are several questions that are asked frequently by people interested in joining the Navy:

Are hand, neck, or face tattoos allowed in the Navy?

Hand and neck tattoos are allowed in the Navy.

Neck tattoos were recently added to the acceptable list of Navy tattoos as long as they are below one inch in diameter.

Tattoos behind the ear are also permitted as long as the ink is not touching the ear directly.

There are some circumstances where a Navy recruiting commander may grant a waiver for having a neck tattoo that exceeds the maximum 1 inch x 1 inch dimensions.

However, face tattoos are still NOT permitted in the United States Navy.

The same is true of the head, scalp, and ears.

Are Navy officers allowed to have tattoos?

Yes, the new Navy tattoo policy grants the same privileges to officers as enlisted personnel.

Therefore, Navy officers are allowed to have tattoos that extend below the elbow or knee, places on the body that were previously restricted prior to the updated policy.

Commanding officers also have discretion when it comes to allowing or prohibiting body art on other sailors that go against the Navy tattoo policy for 2023.

Related Article – Navy Pilot Requirements

Will the Navy pay to remove tattoos?

Unfortunately, the answer is usually no.

In the past, a soldier could get funding from the military branch he or she was serving in order to remove a tattoo that was not allowed for service.

However, in 2006, the Department of Defense released a new policy that requires active-duty military personnel to pay for their own tattoo removals.

There was hope along with the new Navy tattoo policy that the decision would be reversed, however, the DOD policy still remains in place.

Sailors who are ordered to have a tattoo removed by a commanding officer can get financial support but a command-directed tattoo removal in the Navy is rare.

The good news is that since the Navy is looser with its tattoo policy than other branches, the chances of needing to remove a tattoo in order to serve your country are far less.

Can you go to the Naval Academy if you have tattoos?

The Naval Academy is located in Annapolis and prepares some of the brightest young minds for officer positions in the military branch.

In the past, the restrictions against having tattoos in the Naval Academy were fairly intense.

The academy has loosened some of its standards in support of the new Navy tattoo policy for 2023.

While it is still fairly frowned upon to join the Naval Academy with a tattoo, there are exceptions.

The official academy policy on tattoos states body art is prohibited anywhere on the body that is “prejudicial to good order, discipline, and morale, or are of a nature to bring discredit on the Naval Service.”

Though you may get away with a few tattoos on the arms or legs, the academy does not allow any body art on the head, face, neck, ears, or scalp.

Permissible tattoos on the torso area of the body shall not be visible through white uniform clothing, and chest tattoos will not be visible when v-neck undergarments are worn underneath any uniform.

Can you get a waiver for tattoos in the Navy?

Yes, you can receive permission for a tattoo that is otherwise not allowed under the terms of the Navy tattoo policy.

Though waivers are not handed out liberally, you may receive a pass for a neck tattoo that is larger than one inch in diameter.

In order to qualify for a neck tattoo waiver, the ink may not touch the hairline or reach behind the ears.

Military waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis with no guarantees.

Sailors who are discovered to have tattoos with prohibited content may face disciplinary action.

The disciplinary action could include involuntary discharge in the most extreme situations.

Unless it is an extreme case, most sailors are given the option of removing or modifying the tattoo in order to conform to current rules and regulations.

Body art is not the only grooming standard that the U.S. Navy regulates.

The Navy also enforces rules regarding haircuts, facial hair (beards, mustaches, etc.), and body piercings.

The U.S. Navy currently prohibits body jewelry when on duty for both men and women. There are no prohibitions on earrings for men or women when off duty.

Navy hair standards require men and women to keep it “neat, clean, and well-groomed” with specific requirements regarding length.

Certain hairstyles are not allowed, and you can find a full listing of permitted and prohibited hairstyles in the link below.

The Navy requires sailors to have a clean-shaven face with the exception of tightly regulated mustaches and sideburns.

Beards are not permitted in the U.S. Navy unless a medical shaving waiver is issued.

Are Cabin Crew Tattoos Allowed? Flight Attendant Tattoo Policy

  • T attoos are allowed on cabin crew members, but it should not be visible when they are wearing the flight attendant uniform.
  • Airlines have different policies when it comes to tattoos. Some airlines are more lenient than others.
  • If you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, consider where on your body you will get it and whether or not the airline you want to work for has any restrictions against visible tattoos.

Can I apply to become a flight attendant even if I have tattoos? The short answer to this question is YES, you can have tattoos and still become a cabin crew, but it should NOT be visible when you are wearing the flight attendant uniform!

While some airlines will allow you to have tattoos, there are certain guidelines and regulations that you will need to follow.

First of all, it depends on which airline you want to work for. Some airlines have very strict rules when it comes to tattoos. For example, Emirates cabin crew are not allowed to have any visible tattoos when you wear their uniforms.

Other airlines are a bit more relaxed about it. For example, United Airlines have relaxed their tattoo rules and allow employees to have tattoos, provided they are the size of the employee’s work badge or smaller.

So before you get inked, make sure you do your research and find out the tattoo policy of the airline you want to work for.

Why do airline companies have strict tattoo policies for cabin crew

Which airlines allow cabin crew to have a tattoo, getting a tattoo as a cabin crew, can cabin crew hide their tattoos with a cover or makeup, i am a man, can i have a tattoo on my arm and still work as a flight attendant, i am a woman, i have a tattoo on my legs, can i still apply to work as a crew, i have a tattoo on my back, can i work as a flight attendant, can i cover my tattoo with my watch, video: cabin crew tattoo guide.

Tattoos can be seen as unprofessional by airline companies. They can also be seen as a distraction and something that could negatively affect the customer experience. Airlines want their cabin crew to look professional and neat, and tattoos do not always reflect that image.

It is important to keep in mind the following:

  • First, many airlines have strict policies about visible tattoos. So if you have any tattoos that can’t be covered by your uniform, it may limit your ability to work for certain airlines.
  • Second, even if an airline doesn’t have a tattoo policy, that doesn’t mean that they won’t prefer candidates without tattoos.

So if you’re serious about becoming a cabin crew, it’s probably best to avoid any visible tattoo.

Most airlines will have a policy in place regarding tattoos. This is usually based on the cultural norms of the countries that the airline flies to. For example, some Middle Eastern countries may have stricter policies in place due to religious beliefs.

As a general rule of thumb, it is best to keep your tattoos covered while at work. Some airlines may allow small, discreet tattoos but it is always best to check with your airline before going ahead with any ink.

American Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Easyjet, Southwest and Delta Airlines allow employees to have tattoos so long as they cover it up using bandage or makeup.

United Airlines have announced new policies with appearance and have also relaxed their tattoo rules. They now allow employees to have tattoos, provided they are the size of the employee’s work badge or smaller.

If you are thinking of getting a tattoo, it is also worth considering where on your body you will get it. Remember that you will be wearing a uniform for most of your working day and some areas may be more visible than others.

Overall, as long as you are willing to cover up your tattoos while at work, you should have no problem becoming a cabin crew member with ink. Just be sure to check with your airline first to make sure they are okay with it.

flight attendant tattoo airline

There is a lot of cabin crew who have tattoos, and while some airlines have no problem with this, others require that tattoos be covered while on duty.

It also depends on the location of the tattoo. If is on your chest or your back, you can easily cover it up with an undershirt beneath your uniform. So it is safe and okay.

However, if you have a tattoo on your arm or hand, you may need to check the policy with your airline employer. Some airlines strictly do not allow tattoos on visible parts of the body and they do not allow them even if the crew will inform them they will cover it with make-up, bandage, or an accessory.

There are a few cabin crew who have even had their tattoos removed in order to comply with their airline’s policy. In the end, it really depends on the airline and what their policy is. Some are more lenient than others, but most cabin crews are ultimately able to find a way to cover their tattoos while on duty.

If you have a tattoo on your arm and it can be covered by your uniform (long or short sleeves), then it’s okay. Again, this depends on the company uniform and tattoo policies. Some airlines have short-sleeve uniforms so you have to check the length of the shirt.

If the tattoo will be concealed as you wear your uniform, then it is still fine.

Yes, you are allowed to wear undergarments in your uniform, and you won’t be taking off your shirt when you work, so you can have a tattoo on your back and still work as a crew.

It is on a case-to-case basis and it depends on how strict the airline company is. Most likely not as the usual rule is that the tattoo should be concealed by your crew uniform.

Here’s a quick video guide uploaded on YouTube about flight attendants and tattoos:

Airline companies may view tattoos as unprofessional. They can also be seen as a disturbance and, perhaps, jeopardize the client’s experience. The airline staff wants to appear professional and neat, which is not always the case with tattoos.

If you’re serious about becoming a cabin crew member for an airline company with strict rules when it comes to tattoos, then make sure to do your research before getting anything done so that you can avoid any possible disqualification from employment based on appearance guidelines.

Monster Truck Rally or Holy Spirit Barbie Party? A Missouri Megachurch Offers Both

Providence catholic health care system to pay more than $200 million for unpaid wages, as many hbcus thrive, faith-based black schools fight financial and accreditation woes, phil mcgraw and ed young discuss god’s calling, parenting and the ‘woke mob’ during sunday service, how christian country artist jd walker embraces his nickname ‘outlaw for jesus’, exploring the role of tattoos in salvation: can we go to heaven with tattoos.

Tattoos

Many people have wondered, Can we go to heaven with tattoos? The question of whether individuals with tattoos can enter heaven is a topic of interest and debate among believers. While some may view tattoos as a barrier to salvation, others emphasize the importance of inner faith and repentance.

Let’s study this complex issue, examining biblical teachings, varying interpretations, and practical insights for believers.

1. Understanding Salvation Beyond External Appearance:

The essence of salvation lies not in outward appearances, but in inner faith and repentance. The presence of tattoos does not inherently determine one’s eligibility for heaven. Instead, salvation is based on a personal relationship with God and acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior.

2. Biblical Teachings on Tattoos:

The Bible mentions restrictions on marking one’s body in Leviticus 19:28 , stating, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves.” However, interpretations of this verse vary among Christian denominations. Some view it as a prohibition against tattooing, while others interpret it within its historical and cultural context.

3. Interpretations Among Christians:

Within the Christian community, opinions on tattoos vary widely. While some interpret tattooing as sinful due to its association with pagan rituals or concerns about defiling the body, others emphasize the importance of grace, forgiveness, and redemption through repentance.

Ultimately, the acceptability of tattoos is subject to personal conviction and interpretation of biblical principles.

The question of whether individuals with tattoos can go to heaven is ultimately a matter of personal faith and interpretation of biblical teachings. While the Bible mentions restrictions on marking one’s body, salvation is based on inner faith in Jesus Christ and repentance of sin. As believers, let us focus on the heart rather than outward appearances, extending grace, love, and acceptance to all.

4. Embracing Diversity within the Body of Christ:

Within the diverse tapestry of the Body of Christ, believers come from various cultural backgrounds, life experiences, and personal convictions. Some may bear tattoos as expressions of cultural identity, personal significance, or artistic expression. Embracing this diversity requires recognizing that salvation is not contingent upon external appearances but is rooted in the grace and mercy of God.

As members of the same spiritual family, believers are called to extend love, acceptance, and understanding to one another, regardless of differences in personal convictions or outward adornments.

5. Redemption and Restoration:

Central to the Christian faith is the transformative power of redemption and restoration through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Regardless of past actions or decisions, individuals who have tattoos are invited to experience the forgiveness and renewal offered by God.

Through genuine repentance and faith in Christ, they can find healing, wholeness, and reconciliation with God. As believers, we are called to reflect the unconditional love and forgiveness of God, extending grace and compassion to all who seek redemption and restoration.

6. Engaging in Meaningful Dialogue and Discernment:

As believers grapple with questions surrounding tattoos and salvation, engaging in meaningful dialogue and discernment is essential. Rather than approaching the topic with judgment or condemnation, Christians are called to engage in respectful conversation, seeking to understand differing perspectives and interpretations of biblical teachings.

By listening attentively, expressing empathy, and sharing insights grounded in Scripture, believers can foster a spirit of unity, mutual respect, and spiritual growth within the Body of Christ.
