The Ultimate Guide to Yacht Clubs in Brisbane

Bill Michaels

What are Yacht Clubs?

Yacht Clubs are social organizations created to bring together people who have a passion for yachting, sailing, and boating. They offer a wide range of activities, such as sailing lessons, racing, and social events. Yacht Clubs also provide opportunities for members to connect with like-minded people, share their experiences, and learn from each other.

The History of Yacht Clubs

The first yacht clubs were established in the 1700s in Europe, mainly in the United Kingdom. These clubs were exclusive, members-only organizations for the elite. However, over time, yacht clubs became more inclusive, and their focus shifted from social status to the love of sailing and yachting.

In Australia, the first yacht club was established in Sydney in 1856. Since then, yacht clubs have become an integral part of Australian culture, and today, there are over 400 registered yacht clubs across the country.

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland, the state of prepetual sunshine. Residents of this fair city have an outdoor, beachgoing lifestyle with boating and fishing being very popular. The multitude of islands and channels off the coast make for waters protected from the ravages of the open sea and afford good recreational boating even for those with little experience.

Brisbane is the capital and most populous city in the Australian state of Queensland , and the third most populous city in Australia. Brisbane's metropolitan area has a population of 2.24 million, and the South East Queensland urban conurbation, centred on Brisbane, encompasses a population of more than 3 million. The Brisbane central business district is situated inside a bend of the Brisbane River, approximately 15 kilometres (9 NM) from its mouth at Moreton Bay.

Moreton Bay itself has wide sandbanks, many muddy/tidal islands, and difficult shallows. Navigate with care, paying attention to any buoys and chart details. It's a common saying that there are two types of boat in Brisbane -- those that have hit bottom in Moreton Bay and those that have not yet hit bottom in Moreton Bay.

As a yachting destination, despite being the capital, Brisbane is frequently overshadowed by the nearby Southport region on the Gold Coast.

Sub-tropical with sunshine most of the year but a tendency for sudden heavy downpours during the summer months, often depositing inches of rain in a few hours. In winter the sun drops out early and fast, as if someone had turned out the lights. Queensland is the only Australian state that didn't go with Daylight Savings, the Premier of the time— Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen —giving the reason that getting up earlier would confuse the cows and fade the curtains. It could only happen in Queensland!

The city of Brisbane provides a unique opportunity for visiting yachts to anchor or moor in the heart of a major urban centre. The Brisbane River is navigable by deep-draft vessels the 12 miles up river to the city. Low bridge clearances there restrict further upstream excursions by masted yachts. Note that the river can run at 3 knots at times.

Getting into and out of Brisbane is not always trivial. Study the charts in detail.

Your two main routes are:

  • From the north, via the North East or North West passages, around the north end of Moreton Island.
  • From the south, via the Gold Coast Seaway near Southport, and then via the inland waterways. Attempt this only with detailed local knowledge, a full set of tide charts, and extreme patience.

The northern route is most strongly recommended. There are two sub-routes here, one via the North East passage which takes you wide around the top of Moreton Island. The other is via one of the Freeman Passages (I prefer the Inner Freeman Passage) nearer to Moreton Island itself. Study your charts in detail -- many parts of Moreton Bay are quite shallow, and it is very easy to end up on a shoal here.

There are two other routes, which are:

  • South Passage, between Moreton Island, and North Stradbroke Island.
  • Jumpinpin, between North and South Stradbroke Islands.

The simplest advice is: do not attempt either of these passages in a keelboat. They are shallow, and the sandbars shift constantly. You will end up aground. Locals who do these passages all of the time may be keen to try them with you for a bit of a laugh, but even so they are exceedingly dangerous.

Brisbane is a port of entry for Australia. For details see Entrance: Australia .

Rivergate Marina is the mandated entry facility for cruising yachts. It is located about 10nm up the Brisbane River on the port side, just before the Gateway Bridge.

For berthing near Brisbane see Manly , Scarborough , and Gold Coast - Southport .

Marinas and Yacht Clubs

Rivergate Marina and Shipyard

Berth icon

This is the port of entry for Brisbane for cruising yachts. The marina is located 13 km from Brisbane and about 10nm up the Brisbane River just before the Gateway Bridge. It has first class berthing and hardstand facilities, however development of the retail complex is currently stalled. There is no public transport in walking distance of this facility at present (Jan 2009), although Brisbane's excellent Rivercat service may soon service the complex.

Rivergate offers mooring in 105 berths with deep water access for all visiting vessels. The fuel wharf is open 24 hours, 7 days a week serving high and low flow diesel, unleaded and premium unleaded as well as providing sewerage pump out and fresh water facilities. Water, electricity, WiFi, laundry, washrooms and showers. Most major repairs in the yard.

Dockside Marina

Located just south of the Story bridge and the city. Quite a long sail up the river. Staff are reported to be friendly. Easy access to public transport. Ferry wash all day but ceases at night. Docks are reported to be in a poor state of disrepair (March 2010). Showers & toilets, laundry, car park. WiFi, laundry. Allows livaboards.

Horizon Shores Marina

Horizon Shores Marina has a huge variety of service offerings with 500 Marina Berths, 350 Dry Stack storage bays, 200 Trailer Boat storage locations, a 70t Travelift, On water fuel facility, Chandlery, Marine refit and repair, Hardstand and refit sheds plus onsite cafe.

Pacific Harbour Marina

The marina is in Bribie Island, 1 hour north of Brisbane and only 45 minutes from the domestic and international airports. There are 82 berths: mono and multi hull sizes up to 18 m. All usual facilities.

Queensland Cruising Yacht Club

Located at the mouth of Cabbage Tree Creek, the yacht club marina is close to the Brisbane River and the yacht clearing station, but outside the bustle of the city and with easy access to Moreton Bay. Visiting yachts are welcome at ‘yacht club’ prices. The site has toilets, showers, and laundry facilities and is five minutes’ walk to the train station offering regular trains into Brisbane . No fuel is available here, so top up at the yacht clearing station.

Colmslie Reserve

Anchorage icon

Anchoring is permitted in the Brisbane River, and the area around Colmslie Reserve in Morningside (just after the Gateway Bridge) is popular with cruisers and liveaboards. Stay within 100 metres of the southern shore as large vessels use the channels here on a daily basis, including several cruise ships.

Colmslie Reserve has toilets, electric barbeques (free), drinking water and cold showers available and the local swimming pool is a short walk for hot showers at $2.00 per person. Council has taken to replacing water taps with a special tamper-proof fitting but a brass key for these is available in hardware stores for about $5.00 and will be needed in other places within Australia anyhow.

  • Winds in Brisbane can be fierce in early Spring, with the month of October generally being the worst. Winds of 50 knots are not uncommon on Brisbane River and can cause an anchor to drag easily despite generally good holding in a muddy bottom. Let out lots of scope and keep an eye on the weather report. -- Haiqu

Beautiful settings thoroughly enjoyed the meal! I will definitely be back :) I have recommended to a few friends and they have all loved it!

With only 9 people in the place, and we 5 the only ones outside, a “fellow member” at a table if 3 chatted us about our two children running and playing on the grass. Get real!!!!

Have visited the QCYC a number of times - always received great food, good value and great service. Recently had tapas and a wine - lovely place to relax overlooking the marina. Will definitely return. Have now become a member to get even more value.

Nice view across the yachts and other watercraft coming and going, good food and a relaxed atmosphere. Some people had dogs on leads out in the grassed area which was nice.

Have been eating here for some time so last night tried out the new chef and could not fault the food or the service.

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

What Our Customers are saying…

🎉

Thank you to all the team at QCYC for a very enjoyable day.

The team had a great time and the food was lovely.

They are wanting me to plan for next year at the same venue.  So I will be in touch in the new year to organise a date for next year!

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a safe New Year.

12 December 2022

“I just wanted to write and let you know about our very first visit to the Sandgate yacht club.  We spend half of our lives in Italy, and had not had the pleasure of visiting, till a friend mentioned the club.

We were happy with the menu….more than sufficient for a balmy Sunday on the terrace with a cool breeze blowing.  On this occasion, we did not participate in the wine menu, but I did see there were single glass offerings for the designated driver as well as a comprehensive wine list.

We were in 4 people…only two ordering the same plate, and all plates were well presented and tasty.  ALL staff were friendly and welcoming, and we will definitely return.”

yours faithfully,

Beverley and Giambattista Nicoli

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

moscow boat show

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.

EAST SIDE — A day-long open house for local boaters of all experience levels this weekend in East Side aims to be an accessible, fun draw for newbies to the nautical world, organizers said.

Yachtapalooza takes place 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Crowley’s Yacht Yard , 3434 E. 95th St.

The free, indoor event celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. It features free seminars and demonstrations, a pig roast, live music, a flea market Friday and Saturday and a three-day sale on nautical items from Boater’s Closet Friday-Sunday.

Organizers hope to draw 1,000 current and future mariners out to this year’s event, said Nick Fugate, sales manager at Crowley’s Yacht Yard.

Yachtapalooza will also include a boat showcase by Nautical Donations , Crowley’s charitable arm, featuring several rehabbed, budget-friendly boats for sale.

Proceeds from the boat sales will support nonprofits like the Chicago Maritime Society and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Foundation, Fugate said.

The Chicago Boat Show dropped its sailing portion in recent years and is planning a move to the suburbs next year , so this weekend “is probably the closest thing to a sailboat show that we’ve got in Chicago,” said Charles Szymanski, a Yachtapalooza organizer and president of the nonprofit Rainbow Races .

With a few dozen vendors and free seminars on topics like marine pumps and toilets, splicing line and rope, and applying epoxy and varnish, Yachtapalooza offers “anything you would need” to maintain a boat, Fugate said.

The seminars give attendees “the chance to use the products, put their hands on them and feel them, and learn a little more than watching a powerpoint on a screen,” he said.

The event is “the perfect opportunity for anyone looking to get into sailing, [with] questions about sailing or [wanting] to check out a sailboat for the first time,” Szymanski said.

brisbane cruising yacht club

Rainbow Races is one of Yachtapalooza’s featured vendors, and its members will host one of the day’s seminars. The group aims to erase barriers marginalized groups may face in getting into sailing, Szymanski said.

It’s the only U.S. Sailing-sanctioned, LGBTQ+ sailing school in the country, and the only LGBTQ+ sailing organization in the Midwest, he said.

Rainbow Races’ first day of sailing school begins May 18. The group is offering a $50 early-bird discount on sailing classes through the end of April with the discount code “hydra50.” To register, click here .

The sailing world struggles with homophobia, misogyny, elitism and other forms of discrimination prevalent in other sports, Szymanski said. Rainbow Races creates a safe community around the sport which tries to counter those problems, he said.

Despite its issues, due to the collaborative nature of sailing, it’s also “probably the most friendly sports arena I’ve experienced,” Szymanski said.

“Sailing is a true team sport,” he said. “You have to trust your crewmates with your life, and you also have to support each other.

“Sailors are aware if we don’t evolve, we die … If the wind changes, you have to change with it.”

brisbane cruising yacht club

Chicago’s sailing community is robust, particularly with groups like the Park District, local yacht clubs and Rainbow Races encouraging new people to explore the sport, Fugate said.

But with a massive lake as Chicago’s backyard and “a very strong maritime history” in the city, the community could definitely stand to grow, Szymanski said.

Yachtapalooza is a free “casual meeting of the minds” that can help spread the joy of sailing and boating and change a misperception that the community is only for the ultra-rich, Szymanski said.

Million-dollar yachts “are great to look at and to dream about, but when you get down to it, Chicago is a blue-collar city,” Szymanski said. “A lot of the folks trying to buy boats are probably younger and more [budget-conscious]. It makes this a really unique opportunity to bring people in, in a very casual, unencumbered way.”

  • The Best Golf Clubs in…

In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■
