Gem Setting, The Rolex Way

Rolex spreads out its massive watchmaking operations across over 7,000 employees located at four separate sites in Switzerland. The gem-setting of Rolex watches happens at the Rolex Chêne-Bourg site, which is also where the company produces its dials and bezels.

The Rolex gemology department is tasked with selecting the only highest quality gemstones, which include diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. Not only are these precious stones subjected to thorough inspection by trained experts, but they also undergo rigorous testing by state-of-the-art machinery.

Some parameters Rolex sets out for the diamonds it chooses to set into its watches include:

– Diamond color must be between D and G (GIA color chart).

– No observable inclusions at 10x magnification.

Once the gems are selected for their future watches, Rolex’s master gem-setters then set each of the stones into the gold or platinum surfaces of the designated watch parts – by hand.

Factory Diamond Rolex Watches vs. Custom Iced out Rolex Watches

Adding aftermarket diamonds to a Rolex watch is a fairly common practice. Since the timepiece has been altered, Rolex will no longer service a watch with aftermarket gems. Furthermore, buyers and collectors typically favor Rolex watches with genuine parts. This is especially true of Rolex enthusiasts – customized Rolex watches are almost always a no-go for collectors.

What Rolex Collections Have Gem-Set Watches?

The Rolex watches that are most frequently set with diamonds are the more dress-oriented models such as the Datejust, Day-Date, and Pearlmaster. In fact, all Rolex Pearlmaster watches are set with diamonds, and it is often considered to be Rolex’s collection of jewelry-oriented timepieces.

However, iced out Rolex sports watches are most definitely a thing too. Rolex has produced a number of different gem-set Daytona, Submariner, GMT-Master II, and Yacht-Master models, and Daytona watches with diamond hour markers and Yacht-Master references with diamond-paved dials are currently part of the standard Rolex catalog.

Additionally, there are some ultra-rare Rolex sports watches, such as the white gold Submariner 116659SABR with diamonds and sapphires (worn by Mark Wahlberg) or the Everose gold GMT-Master II 126755SARU with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires (worn by Trevor Noah) that aren’t advertised but discreetly produced in very small numbers.

It is also worth mentioning that previously, certain models like the last generation of 34mm Air-King watches with fluted bezels were fitted with diamond-set dials but at the present time, gem-set configurations are limited to the following Rolex collections:

– Datejust

– Lady-Datejust

– Date

– Day-Date

– Pearlmaster

– Daytona

– Submariner

– GMT-Master II

– Yacht-Master

What Parts Of Rolex Watches Have Diamonds?

The different parts of a Rolex watch that can be embellished with diamonds or other gemstones include the following components:

– Dials

– Bezels

– Cases

– Bracelets

Dials are the most common area that Rolex decks out with diamonds and/or other gemstones. This style can range from one or two diamond hour markers to full diamond-paved dials and everything in between. Diamond indices on a Rolex watch can be round-cut ones or baguette-cut ones. Furthermore, some Rolex watches, like the Lady-Datejust 28, can have prominent hour markers such as an oversized Roman numeral paved with diamonds.

Rolex Serti Dials

Diamond Rolex dials are sometimes nicknamed “Serti Dials,” particularly on sports models. For instance, when looking at vintage and/or discontinued Rolex sports watches, you’ll often come across various Submariner, GMT-Master II, and Yacht-Master models with Serti dials. These older dial styles often combined diamond hour markers with sapphire or ruby hour markers. The word “Serti” is derived from the French word “ sertir ” (which refers to setting gems). It is also worth noting that diamond dial versions of a particular reference do not have different reference numbers to non-diamond dial variants.

Another frequent area that Rolex offers gemstone embellishments is the watch bezel, which often features diamonds but can also include sapphires, rubies, or emeralds too. There are bezels entirely set with round-cut or baguette-cut diamonds, such as those found on select Datejust, Day-Date President, and Pearlmaster references. Rolex also makes some Pearlmaster and Datejust references with a dozen or so diamonds peppered around the bezel rather than covering the entire surface, and a particularly collectible iced out Rolex watch is the Rainbow Daytona, which features a rainbow gradient of baguette-cut sapphires set into the bezel.

Rolex Reference Numbers and Gem-set Bezels

The letters in Rolex reference numbers almost always identify a particular bezel style – and this extends to diamond and/or gemstone variants too. Below is a brief rundown of some examples.

– TBR ( Tessellate Brillants ): Diamonds

– TEM ( Tessellate Emeraude ): Emeralds

– SABLV ( Saphirs Bleu Vert ): Blue and green sapphires

– SABR ( Saphirs, Brillants ): Sapphires and diamonds

– SACO ( Saphirs Cognac ): Cognac sapphires

– SAFUBL ( Saphirs Fuchsia Bleu ): Fuchsia and blue sapphires

– SAJOR ( Saphirs Jaune Orange ): Yellow and orange sapphires

– SANR ( Saphirs Noir ): Black sapphires, such as GMT-Master II 116759SANR

– SARU ( Saphirs, Rubis ): Sapphires and rubies, such as GMT-Master II 116759SARU

Although not as common as dials and bezels, Rolex also makes watches with diamond-set cases and bracelets. Some examples include the Lady-Datejust ref. 179159 with diamond-set lugs and the Day-Date ref. 18348 with a remarkable President bracelet featuring diamond-set center links, and the Daytona ref. 116598SACO, which is fitted with a leather strap but features diamond-set lug-hoods that fill the gap between where the strap meets the case.

Rolex is really flexing with these two oysterflex-equipped models..

Rolex is having a big day, with a lot of green. We've already seen the new Air-King and a left-handed GMT-Master II – both featuring green accents. But enough of the green already. We now have two new 42mm Yacht-Masters. One is white gold with a killer Falcon's Eye dial. And the other is a Rolex Yacht-Master 42 in yellow gold, baby! 

Much like the existing white gold, these new variation takes things into new territory in terms of case and dial material. They keep things simple and straightforward with completely white text on the dial (The Everose Yacht-Master 40 displays the word Yacht-Master in red).

Fans will be pleased to see there are now options within the 42mm Yacht-Master range. Previously, this size was only available in white gold with a standard black dial. Both variations utilize the same Rolex in-house caliber 3235 released in 2015, and fitted inside the 42 yacht-leisure watch since 2019.

Of course, the Crown didn't stop there. In addition to this new 42mm model, Rolex has also unveiled a new Yachtmaster 40 in white gold (a first for that collection) and a rotatable – yes you read that right – multi-colored sapphire bezel and iced-out lugs. It's certainly a watch that deserves a certain level of yacht. 

If any material is tailor-made for leisurely drinks on the fantail in Capri, it's yellow gold. Of course, that wouldn't be the case for true sport yachting, but let's be real – the target audience for the Yacht-Master doesn't really get down with that kind of boating. So what does that make the Falcon's Eye dial? It's something you want just because you want it. And that's okay.

The Yacht-Master line is something of an oddball in the Rolex lineup. It looks similar to a Submariner, but has certain differences like the use of a matte ceramic bezel as opposed to polished. Of course, the biggest difference between a Yacht-Master and other Rolex sports watches is that has come exclusively in precious metals. And that trend continues today with the introduction of yellow gold.

I'm sure many fans are disappointed to learn that Rolex did not release a titanium Yacht-Master – which was made as a prototype for British sailor Ben Ainslie. Oh well. The new one keeps consistency within the range. It was gold, and remains gold.

I'm torn between which variation I like more. On one hand, I love the yellow gold model because – well – I love yellow gold. It looks like a watch that has existed, or at least should always existed and that's a good thing. On the other hand, just look at the Falcon's Eye dial! It is undeniably cool, and one of those things that makes you look closer and closer. Did Rolex need to create a dial like this? Of course not, but it's Rolex we're talking about.

Both watches come fitted to the Rolex Oysterflex bracelet which gives these precious models a certain sportiness that belies the price of gold. Yachting season is nearly upon us (I think). And these arrived just in time.

The Rolex Yacht-Master 40 watch reference 126679SABR is one of the more exotic modern Rolex watches that the company rarely feels inclined to communicate about. These all get sold, anyway, and it could be argued that watches like this might very well confuse the image that at least some in the target demographic have of Rolex — even if there’s no doubt these gem-set, limited-production pieces are proper Rolex watches through and through.

It’s probably best that we kick things off by addressing the elephant in the room. Priced at just around $80,000 USD, this Rolex Yacht-Master 126679SABR is over $50,000 more expensive than a run-of-the-mill solid-gold Yacht-Master 40 presented on the same Oysterflex rubber strap with the same “intense black” dial and the same 70-hour power reserve Rolex Calibre 3235 self-winding movement. That’s $50,000 for a gem-set bezel, four diamond-set lugs, and two diamond-set crown guards. I’m sure we could all put together a long list of epic watches that offered more horological wow factor for those 50, let alone 80 large ones. From a solid-gold Lange Zeitwerk to a Ulysse Nardin Moonstruck to another one of my all-time personal favorites, the Breguet Tradition Chronograph Indépendant 7077 ( hands-on here ), it boggles the mind how much unfiltered watchmaking greatness one can attain for $80,000.

And yet, the ultimate question remains: What entertains more? The calculated accuracy with which tiny wheels mesh to power complicated displays or a tiny row of blatantly superfluous little stones that so clearly serve no other purpose than to amaze, impress, and communicate one’s wealth and status? One thing is for sure: Only a small minority of watch enthusiasts tend to claim they got into watches because of such haute joaillerie watches, and that puts these high-jewelry pieces at a disadvantage when it comes to garnering their appeal and approval.

Maybe among the reasons why these gem-set watches are under-appreciated by so many is that watchmakers rarely dedicate effort to show the watch enthusiast community what makes these pieces so difficult to make. Or maybe it’s that lavishly gem-set pieces tend to get less attention in watch media because they are hard to come by and are rarely met with the same enthusiasm as similarly priced mechanically complicated watches.

That is a shame, really, because to prepare, assemble, and finish such a bezel and case takes no less expertise, dexterity, patience, and mastery of one’s craft than it takes to finish the beveled edges on a bridge and assemble a relatively complex mechanical movement. Just as the gears and pinions have to be carefully adjusted for them all to mesh and sit flush between the plate and the bridge inside a caliber, the room for error when fitting the stones in these bezels and cases is just as punishingly small.

Whereas mechanical movements are judged by the refinement of their finish — such as their hand-applied, polished, beveled edges called anglage — and the accuracy and poise with which the movement and its displays operate, gem-set watches have their own set of criteria by which the best can be differentiated from the mediocre. One such defining characteristic is the quality of the setting, more specifically that all stones — 40 trapeze-cut sapphires and diamonds, and a triangle-cut diamond as the zero marker on the 126679SABR— are perfectly flush and level. In practice, this means that as one is looking down at the watch and is gently moving it around, the top facet (also known as the “table”) of each component lights up in a flat, white reflection in perfect succession. If any one of the stones were set at an angle ever-so-slightly off, it would forever be visible under every lighting condition.

Whereas the myth of diamond scarcity is more or less busted, manufacturers can still claim that the high-quality colored stones such as sapphires and emeralds used in these watches remain challenging to source and work with. You see, each stone only shows its true color after it’s been pre-cut, and so only gems pre-cut and pre-selected for their particular hue can then be cut to the exact specification. It takes a large batch and a great deal of effort to sort these stones by color, and then high levels of dexterity to carefully set them without damaging any one of the pre-selected stones. Rolex has its own in-house gemmology department where it checks and works with all the precious and semi-precious stones used in its watches and compares the stones against certified master stones. Rolex admits to using “specialist tools, including some that are specially designed by the brand” to insure the quality and uniformity of its stones.

Once the stones have been selected, each needs to be cut within tolerances barely larger than those used for the fabrication of movement parts — we are talking about two-hundredths of a millimeter here, which is around a quarter of the diameter of a human hair. That’s the wiggle room when cutting each stone by hand. This goes in tandem with the precision of the bezel and its cavity milled to accommodate the stones. Why such precision? Because without it a bezel like this couldn’t be completed as the last stone to be set simply wouldn’t fit. What you see here is referred to as channel setting, more rarely as “baguette setting,” where the stones are held in between two metal rails from above and below and are stacked side-by-side up against each other. As is so often the case with some of the most challenging tasks, the end result looks deceivingly simple, easy, and straightforward.

The work begins with a hollowed-out bezel in 18k gold, and the first stone in a row of 41 is set. The stone is gently placed in the groove and its flushness against the top and bottom rail is checked. If it is too high — which is the only thing it can be, to give room for fine adjustment — the gem-setter will adjust the cavity with a graver. Rolex claims this set-remove-adjust process is repeated three times, on average, with each stone, until the table of the gem is perfectly aligned with the bezel. Then the rest of the stones are set, removed, adjusted, and set again, to align the level and the angle of their table with the stone that has come before them. The same basic truth applies here as does with case finishing: Material that’s once been removed cannot be put back, therefore the process of this fine adjustment is a one-way street on which one is to proceed with utmost caution.

These images are dark for a reason: If correctly exposed, the reflections off the facets would be so bright the gems and their color could not be seen.

Admittedly, there is an abundance of poorly made gem-set watches out there that have certainly affected the reputation of high-end, beautifully made OEM products. Thankfully, we are yet to see poorly applied aftermarket anglage on luxury watch movements. Likewise, it’s difficult to withdraw from the equation the fact that such lavishly decorated luxury wristwatches are often viewed as something that was purchased not for the merits of their craftsmanship but rather for their uncompromised ability to promote one’s status and do so from a mile away.

All this and, again, a lack of frequent and in-depth communication by the brands, have created a strong headwind for gem-set watches and it is understandable why some choose to stay away from this category of fine watches in an attempt not to be associated with the blatant flaunting of the nouveau riche . However, underneath it all lies a watch that has taken some highly qualified craftspeople a very long time to make and to make consistently well. Nothing indicates that said headwind will die down anytime soon, but, to close on a positive note, that probably won’t suffice to make these fun-to-wear and admirable exercises in watchmaking go away.

Rolex has chosen to take the highly manual crafts of gemology and gem-setting and try to integrate them within the Rolex universe of standardized quality across high production volumes. That is an extremely rare, if not singular exercise in modern watchmaking that resulted in a host of challenges and spectacular, albeit mighty expensive timepieces. Hands-On Rolex Yacht-Master II Review

So, I got a YachtMaster II. But hear me out… It was an insanely, and undeserved gift (“the company you keep”, right?). This got me to thinking about a lot of Rolexes offerings , and brought me around to the idea that the Yacht-Master II, no matter how niche a complication, no matter how specific, no matter how big, no matter how ridiculous - Might be one of my favorite models - And I’m not just saying that because I didn’t actually make the purchase.

Let me clear the elephant in the room. That’s the “You’re just saying you like the watch because it was free” statement that is absolutely BOUND to shroud my DM’s after this goes live. And that’s fine, I expect it, I welcome it, and I recognize the privilege that I’m projecting here. However, I would like to clear the air on where this review is going to come from - I have had plenty, and I mean PLENTY of opportunity to buy, sell, handle, photograph, and write about Rolex in the past decade. While I have on occasion, I’ve never particularly found Rolex to be a terribly interesting brand to review. Incremental changes over decades and decades tend to run together, and very few of those changes are worth lengthy, wrist-time in order to trump the (literal) thousands of reviews on the internet already - So I’ve mostly passed up on writing any kind of in-depth article or review on the brand. I’ve always felt that was better left for the Rolex boys, who are probably more qualified than myself to write about them anyway.

That is, until I have been wearing this particular model for a decent period of time. I started to notice that so many of the Rolex Yacht-Master II reviews on the internet, have often come from people who are attempting to sell you the watch. With the exception of a few “Hands On” articles floating around, I have had a very difficult time finding an open and honest review of this particular watch from someone who has actually owned one, and has worn it for a significant portion of time. So that is what I’m going to attempt to do here. This is going to be a wordy, however, comprehensive review of the Rolex Yacht-Master II (Ref 116680) - Arguably the most polarizing modern watch Rolex has produced.

If you’ve been around Rolex circles for any serious amount of time, you’ll likely have heard that the Yacht-Master II is simply too large of a watch for Rolex to have made - And to be fair, it’s very big by Rolex standards. The watch is the only Rolex produced that measures in at 44mm with a significant 14mm thickness and is made of 904L Stainless Steel. So to the more introverted Rolex collector, this is probably not the watch for them. While this model is definitely heavy, I have never once felt this watch to be uncomfortable or a nuisance on the wrist.

I have seen a number of comments that the Yacht-Master II is too bulky and heavy, however I do not feel that is the case. In fact, my Omega Planet Ocean is only 42mm x 15.7mm, and feels much bulkier and heavier than the Yacht-Master II.

The case is alternating with polished and satin-finished and features a nautical blue ceramic bezel. The pushers are, as is Rolex’s MO, a perfect length. Even though I’m left handed, and therefore wear my watch on my right wrist, I had no issues with the pushers digging into my wrist, or catching on my sleeves. The rounded and tapered case, although thick, cleanly buffers between the oversized bezel and any sleeve you wish to pull over it. I live in Tampa FL, so I am always tucking it away under a sleeve… cause… I don’t want to get robbed in a parking lot.

The pushers are easy to use, cause it’s Rolex, and of course they are. The triple-lock crown screws down easy and fits tight against the case, so I never feel like there is any risk in the water - Even though the watch carries a 100m water resistance rating.

The bezel is often criticized for it’s ostentatious nature. I mean, there is no doubt what watch is on your wrist with the huge, bold, and easily seen “YACHT-MASTER II” etched into the bezel itself. The bezel function works with the movement (which we will get to in a minute), as it turns 90 degrees in order to program the indicators (which we’ll also get to). The matte finish with crescent grippers makes the bezel easy to use, and readily available when needed.

This is the ref. 116680, which means there were some moderate adjustments made to the dial by Rolex over the previous er… 116680 (Rolex opted not to change the reference number). Personally, I find them to be minimal, and unless you’re insanely familiar with the Yacht-Master II line of watches, will likely be largely unnoticed, but I feel it important to discuss anyway.

For starters, the indicators are not simply square all the way around the dial anymore. Instead of every indicator remaining the same shape and angle, the 12 o’ clock indice was changed to an elongated triangle to easily dictate the top of the watch. Additionally, the 6 o’clock indicator was changed to an elongated rectangle, again, to easily dictate it’s location. Is this likely to be a deal-breaker for Regatta enthusiasts when looking to time 60 second intervals with a flyback function? Probably not. But it does make the dial a lot more legible, and I suppose, a certain percentage more useful.

Additionally, the other major changes were too the handset. Instead of the heat treated blued handset of prior models, the 116680 features skeletonized hands with lumed tips and an added “mercedes” hour hand. This allows for the wearer to see the Regatta timer lap ring with minimal interruption - Although, I think the blue handset would have helped - The polished hands can get lost against the slick white dial in certain light. Lesser changes include some thickening of lines, a bit darker tint of blue, and some added lume.

Overall, the dial is exactly what you’d expect from Rolex. It’s superbly legible, displays the utility of the movement well, and is innately “Rolex”. The updates definitely add to the legibility, even when using the lap timer, however, I’ve never known a Rolex to really struggle in that department to begin with.

THE MOVEMENT:

Inside the Yacht-Master II is the Rolex Calibre 4161. The movement is formidable, and the functions make sense for the extremely specific times a captain would need to use it. Essentially, the “chronograph” functions as a 10 minute countdown sectioned off in “laps”. When activated, the movement counts the ten lap starting sequence of a regatta race.

Interestingly, because of the internal memory, the movement can be programmed for any position within the 1-10 sequence for even more precise timing. This can be done by rotating the “Command bezel” 90 degrees and pressing the start / stop pusher to adjust the position. Interestingly, Rolex boasts that it’s one of the first watches in the world to utilize a bezel in conjunction to the movement.

The 360+ part Calibre 4161 beats at 28,800 VpH, features a 72-hour power reserve, and Rolex’s Parachrom hairspring for better anti-magnetism.

THE BRACELET:

The watch comes on an Oystersteel bracelet with a pretty unique clasp feature that allows for the adjustment of the links to 5mm - or a half link. This was super handy for my wrist, because the watch sat just a hair too lose, but taking out a third link would cause the watch to flop around more than I’d like. Admittedly, I hadn’t had much experience with this feature, but learned on the fly how easy it was to use. Where the bracelet connects to the clasp, there is a little fold half link. You can either pull up and flip it back down to set it in place, or pull slightly back to release it. This either shortens, or lengthens the link. This is great for hot days when your wrist swells. And the added ability to do it quick, on the fly, and without tools was a huge bonus to the watches utility.

Obviously, there isn’t much improving on the Oyster bracelet. It’s insanely comfortable, it flexes perfectly when it needs to, it’s clasp is solid and doesn’t buckle (no pun intended) and it’s fit to the lugs is perfect for the watch.

The Yacht-Master II is very top-heavy, so it’s important for the bracelet to manage that efficiently, and this is Rolex we’re talking about, so it does. Are there times that swelling and moisture, and dirt / sand affect the comfort? Sure, but there’s nothing the bracelet can do to fix that.

CONCLUSION:

While, admittedly loud, I found myself leaning into the oversized and exaggerated nature of the watch more and more. Is it massive and recognizable? Yes. Obviously. Does it take away from the watch at all? No. I feel it compliments it. Rolex as a whole has a difficult time being identified without, it becoming your entire identity - If that makes any sense, and the Yacht-Master II case is one of the few (in my opinion) Rolex watches that comes with it’s own personality - even if that personality tends to get lumped in with the loud and obnoxiously rich people that tend to strive to own it.

As my first Rolex, I recognize that it’s not exactly the normal “First” for the brand, but I’ve grown to love the watch. In fact, I think it’s a staple in my collection. It’s hefty and legitimately feels like a sports watch worth wearing, and still classic and toned down enough to be a dinner watch. I don’t have much to fault the watch with that isn’t built into the foundations of what the watch is to begin with. I feel and criticism I could really throw at it would be met with “Yeah, we know, that’s the point”, and that just feels… well, pointless.

How much is the Rolex Yacht-Master II?

THE ROLEX SKY-DWELLER

The Sky-Dweller was debuted at Baselworld in 2012. It was the first new Rolex collection in two decades. It was also one of the most complicated watches Rolex ever made. Rolex really flexed their watchmaking muscles with this one.

The watches were an instant classic. People all over the world couldn’t wait to get their hands on the impressive Sky-Dweller collection .

Two years later, 3 new Sky-Dweller models hit the scene, one of which was the reference 326139 that you see here. 

ROLEX SKY-DWELLER REFERENCE 326139

The Rolex Sky-Dweller reference 326139 has an 18k white gold case with a black leather strap, white gold clasp, and black dial. 

On the surface, the watch (pre-diamonds) has an understated, modern aesthetic that makes it a tremendously versatile watch. You could take it from a business meeting to a cocktail party without a second thought. 

However, deep down, this watch is as luxurious as it gets, being crafted from solid gold. That’s the beauty of white gold, it’s pure understated-luxury. 

Of course, this particular Rolex Sky-Dweller 326139 watch takes the ostentatious level from low-key to off the richter scale with a never-before-seen, fully iced out, exquisite micro-pave diamond flower setting. Thus, understated it is no more. But awesome it most definitely it. If you see this watch in person, your heart is sure to skip a beat. Its brilliance is almost unreal. 

Anyway, before we talk more about the aftermarket micro-pave diamond flower setting customization, let’s discuss some of the key features of the Rolex Sky-Dweller. 

LARGER THAN ROLEX-NORMAL CASE SIZE – 42MM

Up until relatively recently, it almost seemed as if Rolex was wholeheartedly in opposition to larger watches, unlike much of the industry. Their sports watch collections never pushed past 40mm case sizes.

That is, until 2007 when the Yacht-Master II was released, and then the Deepsea the following year. Clearly, Rolex was finally ready to blow up the catalog a bit. 

The Sky-Dweller ended up being the third most sizable watch Rolex has ever made. 

At 42mm, which is already quite considerable, especially by Rolex standards, it actually wears even larger thanks to the robustly spaced yet sharply curved lugs. 

What’s more, it’s pretty thick at 14.1 millimeters. 

To top to off it, it’s not just big, it’s big and precious. The case is solid 18k white gold. A white gold that Rolex makes themselves at their own foundry. So you know it is of the highest quality.

All in all, this makes it one of the biggest Rolex watches you can buy. This thing has immense wrist presence, and that’s before it was completely iced out. Now, “immense” doesn’t even begin to describe this watch’s demeanor. Out of this world or “cosmic” would be a better descriptive.

COMPLICATIONS

Size isn’t the only characteristic the Sky-Dweller shares with the Yacht-Master II , like the Yacht-Master II, the Sky-Dweller is one of Rolex’s most complicated watches. 

The Sky-Dweller has three complications:

• Annual Calendar 
• Dual Time Zone (GMT)

As the Date complication is straight forward – there’s a date window at the 3 o’clock – we will quickly discuss the two other more unique complications. 

Annual Calendar

If you aren’t familiar with the Sky-Dweller, you might not even be able to spot the annual calendar. Rolex really brought out their creativity hats with this one. The Annual Calendar is displayed using slots above the hours. If you look at this watch, above each Roman numeral, there is a horizontal slot, when the slot is filled with black (on other Sky-Dwellers it is red), that indicates the month. So, 12 months in a year, 12 hours on a watch.

Needless to say, 1 o’clock represents January, 2 o’clock represent February, and so on and so forth. That’s what you call simply brilliant.

Dual Time Zone

The Sky-Dweller displays two time zones simultaneously thanks to the highly innovative off-centered disc on the dial. You can see the disc displays 24 hours. 

While the engineering for this is complicated, the functionality is quite simple. The disc rotates as the hours proceed and the red arrow indicates the time in the second time zone. The second time zone is always running. 

As the name of the watch suggests, this function is made for those who are “sky dwellers”. If you travel through different time zones frequently, this function becomes very useful.

Ring Command Bezel

One could argue that the Sky-Dweller has 4 complications because of the Ring Command Bezel. But, technically it’s not a complication. That said, it does make the creation of this watch all the more complicated. 

The Ring Command Bezel, which was first featured on the Yacht-Master II, is intrinsically linked to the watch’s internal movement. It acts as an analog function selector. In essence, it’s a three-position switch to unlock the different actions of the complications, which are then controlled by the crown. The Ring Command Bezel does away with the need for pushers, allowing the watch to keep a clean, refined, sophisticated look, similar to a dress watch. 

Although the seamlessness of the Sky-Dweller’s functions is painlessly easy, the fact of the matter is, this is clear proof of Rolex’s engineering prowess. The development of these complications is no easy feat and can only be worthy of the term ‘haute horology’. 

What’s more, comparing to moonphases, minute repeaters and even tourbillons, the Sky-Dweller’s functions are undoubtedly more useful for the majority of us…

Add countless diamonds to it and you have both saucy aesthetics with practical functionality. 

Now, let’s discuss the aftermarket customization, a micro-pave diamond flower setting…

FULLY ICED OUT WHITE GOLD SKY-DWELLER

It goes without say, this watch did not come with diamonds. Rolex has never put out a Sky-Dweller watch with diamonds . Therefore, you are looking at an aftermarket creation. 

Note: The movement has not been touched and everything is original on this timepiece, the only work that has been done is the white gold has been drilled and filled with diamonds. 

The setting for the diamonds is called a flower setting, which is also known as the honeycomb setting.

The flower setting is a type of micro-pave diamond setting. This is the hottest, most up-to-date kind of setting for an aftermarket diamond luxury watch. 

So, while baguettes were the hottest look a couple years ago, it’s all about that honeycomb-tight micro-pave diamond setting that you see here. 

And it should be noted, this is not a passing fad, micropave is and will remain in demand. It represents the highest quality work you can do for a diamond setting.  

Micro-Pave Diamond Flower Setting (aka Honeycomb)

The precision that it takes for this type of flower setting is only possible using high magnification. Our gem-setter fastidiously drilled into the white gold to set small round brilliant diamonds of uniform size and quality in a row-to-row offset pattern. This creates a honeycomb-like appearance of diamonds and makes it so the entire surface is covered in diamonds.

The diamonds are held in place using a Four Bead Pave setting that has an impeccable balance between diamond security and size. The size of the four bead pave setting allows the diamonds to be set securely yet without too much metal (the prongs) getting in the way. The prongs go unnoticed unless you look very closely. Thus, each diamond stands out prominently, even from a distance. The rows are densely packed, perfectly hugging the curvature of the surface. 

The standard pave setting, which uses parallel rows of diamonds, was popular for aftermarket diamond watches many years ago, but it simply can’t compare to this. The micro-pave diamond flower settings make it so not a sliver of metal can be seen. The diamonds are also just as secure. Overall, this allows more diamond carat weight to be set into the watch and it also creates a much fuller, more complex look. It doesn’t get more “flooded” than this. It would literally be impossible. This is the latest and greatest in gemstone setting advancements, which is, in essence, a science in the field of diamond jewelry. 

Craftsmanship of this caliber is no easy feat. The iced out white gold Sky-Dweller Aftermarket Diamond watch you are looking at took numerous hours to complete. Contrasting Features

This iced out white gold Sky-Dweller has powerful contrast on two fronts, first in the size of the diamonds and second in the black and white color. 

Each element of the watch uses a specific diamond size to create a distinction between the pieces. The bezel’s diamonds are slightly larger than the case’s and the dials are so small that it looks almost like packed snow. 

Then you have the leather strap and black appliqués on the dial. The leather strap sets off the diamonds perfectly. With the black Roman numerals and leather strap juxtaposed between the micro-pave diamond flower setting of the case and clasp, you are left with a polarity that can only be produced by that ever-dynamic, classic black and white contrast.

When this white gold Sky-Dweller watch is on your wrist, it will be hard to take your eyes off it because of all the diamonds. You might get used to it since it’ll be yours, but those around you won’t. Be prepared for people to straight up stare and gawk at a one-of-a-kind watch like this. 

Price? Unbeatable

The diamonds and the setting are as good as an original Rolex creation, bar none. However, the price is a fraction of what Rolex would charge. If this was a Rolex creation it would be 4-5 times the price.  That said, Rolex doesn’t really make watches this showy, with exception to a few Pearlmasters, and we’ve yet to see them use a micro-pave flower setting on any watch. 

In any case, for reference, the white gold Sky-Dweller 326139 retailed for $32,000 before it was discontinued in 2018. As of now, it resales for anywhere between $32,000-$35,000, with prices continuing to rise. Of course, that is not considering the diamond customization.

LeBron’s Rolex Yacht-Master Is Absolutely Dripping in Diamonds

Given his stature as one of the most stylish players in basketball, it’s little surprise that LeBron James’s watch collection is both vast and full of pieces we mortals would have trouble ever getting our hands on. (See here , here , and here .) The face of Louis Vuitton’s latest menswear campaign under the direction of Pharrell , King James is constantly bringing the sartorial and horological heat—and all this while remaining the all-time leading scorer in NBA history.

At the Browns-Rams game this past Sunday, he was spotted with yet another excellent watch: a Rolex Yacht-Master 40 ref. 126655 . The Yacht-Master , which debuted in 1992, is a sort of elevated take on the Submariner inspired by the yachting world. With its bi-directional, 60-minute Cerachrom bezel, it could otherwise be confused with the brand’s famed dive watch—but its precious-metal (and titanium) configurations, optional rubber bracelets, and special dials set it apart.

The ref. 126655, cased in Everose gold and paired to a rubber Oysterflex strap, is available with a sporty black dial—but that’s not the option Bron sprang for. James’s particular example features a sparkling, pavé diamond dial that could conceivably reflect sunlight back into space, it’s so darn lustrous. With its applied, luminous hour plots, Mercedes handset, and date window at 3 o’clock, it’s still readily identifiable as a Rolex sports watch—only with a luxurious twist. Sure, you could take this watch for a swim—it’s water resistant to 300m, after all—but put it in a stadium seat on the wrist of one of the most famous athletes in the world, and it truly shines.

What’s notable about this piece is that it’s a factory-dial watch; visible on the Rolex website , it’s ( theoretically ) out there in the world for anyone with $46,600—and a long-established history with their authorized dealer—to snag. James seems to embrace both catalog and off-catalog pieces, meaning those whose sales are restricted and which aren’t publicized; these are typically high-gem pieces such as the “Eye of the Tiger” Daytona previously seen on his wrist earlier this year .

With a collection that spans Rolex sport watches, crazy Richard Mille pieces , black ceramic Royal Oaks , and more, James has more than proven his horological bona fides. All he needs to do now is work with Pharrell on a La Fabriques du Temps -produced Louis Vuitton watch. Now that would be a collab for the ages.

Robert Downey Jr’s Cartier Santos Dumont

One can always count on RDJ for a good horological showing—I mean, who else moves seamlessly from fairly standard fare like the TAG Heuer Monaco to a liquid-filled HYT ? The Iron Man star shook things up further this week when he strapped on a most excellent (and highly rare) Cartier Santos-Dumont for the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. A recent debut from this past year’s Watches & Wonders show in Geneva , the ref. CRWGSA0053 features a 31.5mm lacquered burgundy case paired to a silver Roman numeral dial and a matching red ruby cabochon crown. Powered by an ultra-thin, hand-wound movement, it’s a striking take on a historically important watch—and the perfect accessory for an actor as gripping and unpredictable as Downey.

Mark Wahlberg’s Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex made subtle updates to its nearly-impossible-to-snag Cosmograph Daytona chronograph for its 60th anniversary this year, including small changes to the hour markers and (for the first time since 2000) a new movement. Wahlberg was clearly quick to secure himself an allocation of the “panda dial” variant, a reference 126500LN. With its 40mm Oystersteel case, black Cerachrom bezel, triple-register chronograph, and matching Oyster bracelet, the modern Daytona is one of the best-wearing, best-looking watches on the market. Walhberg, a noted Rolex collector , has quite a few classic models from the Crown in his collection—but that hasn’t stopped him from branching out into other marques, including Patek .

Henry Golding’s Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5711

It’s been a minute since we’ve seen a 5711 in the wild—but that doesn’t diminish the singular importance of this most sought-after (discontinued) reference from Patek Philippe. Spotted on the wrist of Crazy Rich Asians heartthrob Henry Golding at the Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, the Nautilus luxury sports watch sprang from the mind of famed Swiss designer Gérald Genta in 1976. Famously discontinued by Patek boss Thierry Stern in 2021, the 40mm ref. 5711 was succeeded by the 41mm ref. 5811 in 2022—but that hasn’t diminished demand for the former, which start at roughly $90K on reseller Chrono24.com . Golding, a noted watch fanatic , wears it exceptionally well.

Charles Melton’s Alpine Eagle Frozen

American actor Charles Melton was also present at the 2023 Academy Museum Gala alongside RDJ—but wearing a very different watch. The May December star was seen in a Chopard Alpine Eagle Frozen, a completely iced-out take on the brand’s luxury sports watch that debuted back in 2019. Powered by a chronometer-certified automatic movement, the watch is cased in 18K white gold and is positively dripping with diamonds—over seven carats’ worth, to be exact. The Alpine Eagle line, a spiritual successor to the St. Mortiz collection from the 1980s, is available in a wide variety of sizes and styles, and the brand doesn’t differentiate between men’s and women’s models on its website. Melton’s watch, measuring 36mm, is perfect for any wrist.

Rolex Quietly Introduced A Bunch Of Luxurious ‘Off-Catalogue’ Watches For 2023

Rolex released some pretty wacky stuff at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023… But whilst we were busy getting hyped about those, they also surreptitiously added a few very exciting models to their collection (and discontinued a few models, too…)

One of the busiest spots at Watches & Wonders every year is the Rolex booth: a three-storey-high monolithic gold box that sees a constant stream of journalists, retailers, dignitaries and celebrities streaming in and out of it all fair long.

It’s not easy to get an appointment with Rolex (and therefore a chance to try their new watches on), so most attendees have to make do by pressing their noses up against the display cabinets dotted around the outside of the Rolex booth, with the year’s new models frustratingly out of reach behind glass.

But it turns out that simply getting an appointment with Rolex wasn’t a guarantee that you’d get the full scoop – we certainly didn’t. We covered the biggest releases, including the new titanium Yacht-Master and gold GMT-Master II , but Rolex also introduced a few truly exotic new watches – so-called ‘off-catalogue’ pieces – that represent some of the most exciting and outrageous new watches from the brand.

Here, we’ll go over the most exciting new Rolex watches that Rolex sneakily introduced this year.

An iced-out left-handed GMT-Master II

First up, there’s a luxurious new take on the left-handed GMT-Master II ‘Sprite’ that we believe is the first-ever factory-paved left-handed model from Rolex.

Crafted from white gold and featuring a green dial, its bezel set with 18 emeralds, 18 black sapphires and 12 diamonds; its case and lugs are set with 220 diamonds, and its Oyster bracelet is set with another 172 diamonds. You can even get some matching diamond-set cufflinks with it, if you like.

Crazy new iced-out Daytonas

There are also four new gem-set Daytonas in the collection. There are two ruby-set bezel models: a white gold/black dial model and a yellow gold model that additionally has a diamond-paved dial.

We’ve actually seen wrist shots of the white gold model emerge already and it looks pretty unreal. Real rapper s***.

There are another two diamond-set bezel models that are presumably made from platinum, seeing as they feature ice-blue dial elements (Rolex typically reserves ice blue for their platinum models).

Both are mounted on gem-less Oyster bracelets. One has a totally ice-blue dial with diamond hour markers, while the other features a paved dial with ice-blue subdials and dark blue hands.

Reportedly there were also two completely iced-out Daytonas introduced this year: one in white gold and one in yellow gold. Images of those have been harder to come by.

The watches Rolex discontinued

The other big piece of unspoken Rolex news is the watches they choose to quietly discontinue as they introduce new pieces. 2023 has seen a particularly big batch of discontinued models – but for good reason, too.

Firstly, every previous Daytona and Sky-Dweller reference has been discontinued, as both models have received significant updates to both their movements, and in the Daytona’s case, its design (it’s got a new bezel and the new platinum Daytona has an exhibition caseback).

That means popular models like the yellow gold/green dial and white gold/blue dial Daytona are no more, as are all meteorite dial models. It’s a shame to see meteorite dials disappear from Rolex’s range (not that you could easily get your hands on them anyway…) especially considering how the current meteorite dial Daytonas were only introduced in 2021. Not a very long production run.

The Milgauss has also been discontinued , but unlike the Daytona or Sky-Dweller, there’s no update to take its place – it’s just completely gone. We don’t think that it’ll be gone for good, however: seeing as 2024 will mark the Milgauss’ 70th anniversary, we reckon Rolex is probably going to reintroduce it next year.

The Cellini has also been completely discontinued… In name only, at least. Rolex’s new 1908 dress watch – which not only closely resembles Cellini models of yore but now sits under a new ‘Perpetual’ model family alongside Rolex’s current ‘Classic’ and ‘Professional’ model families – is effectively a ‘like for like’ replacement for the Cellini.
