We’re all romantics. Some of us have it worse than others, of course—those with the proverbial wandering eye—and our backyards are a visual testament to both our passion and our lack of impulse control. We’ve got a small marina’s worth of vessels in various states of repair—the sprit-rigged dinghy, the leaky catboat, and the sweet little double-ender that just needs some cosmetic work—in truth we own more boats than we could restore in three lifetimes. Despite what we tell ourselves (and our spouses), not all boat purchases are especially rational decisions.

But the same thing that seems to draw us to certain boats blinds us to others that might, arguably, be a better fit. Some of the more common production fiberglass trailersailers are good examples. Staring at them probably won’t make your heart sing— no portlights, no sweeping sheer line, and not much wood—just angular windows, predictable lines, and lots of white fiberglass. But over the years we’ve found that many of these popular factory boats—which typically aren’t great in any one category but are pretty good in most—deserve more consideration. The Hunter 18.5 is one we felt warranted a closer look.

The buxom little 18.5 was produced from 1987 to 1993 (a quite different water-ballasted Hunter 19 superseded the 18.5 and was built from 1993 to 1996). The 18.5 featured a modern-looking cockpit and a cabin with as many as four berths. The sliding cabin hatch could be slid forward and hinged up, potentially offering something akin to standing headroom below, and the optional “Weekender Package” included a galley with ice chest, stove, and bucket sink. There was also a portable head located beneath the aft end of the V-berth—everything a small family might need for cruising.

The design was built by Hunter Marine in the United States between 1987 and 1993, but it is now out of production. [1] [5]

The Hunter 18.5 is a small recreational keelboat , built predominantly of fiberglass , with wood trim. It has a fractional sloop rig with a fully battened mainsail , a raked stem , a reverse transom , a transom-hung kick-up rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed wing keel . It displaces 1,600   lb (726   kg) and carries 520   lb (236   kg) of ballast. [1] [3]

The boat has a draft of 2.00   ft (0.61   m) with the standard shoal-draft wing keel, allowing ground transportation on the factory standard trailer . [1] [3]

The boat is optionally fitted with a small 3 to 6   hp (2 to 4   kW) outboard motor for docking and maneuvering. Other factory optional equipment included a portable head , galley alcohol stove, water pump tap, cooler and anchor . [1] [3]

The design has sleeping accommodation for three people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and a straight settee in the main cabin on the port side. Cabin headroom is 48   in (122   cm) . [1] [4]

The design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 288. It has a hull speed of 5.28   kn (9.78   km/h) . [6]

In a 2010 review Steve Henkel wrote, "in the late 1980s, Hunter Marine expanded their cruising, boat line into smaller sizes. They also redesigned the line with a more 'modern' look. The Hunter 18.5 was one of the first of Hunter's minicruisers to be introduced. Unique features include a very shallow (two-foot draft) keel with both a bulb and 'winglets.' Best features: Headroom of four feet is exceptional for a boat of this size ... Ballast is also highest for the group ... Worst features: The keel is too shallow, and has too small a lateral area, to expect even so-so upwind sailing performance, with or without the winglets (which we suspect are too small to serve any real purpose). The full-length battens make it difficult to 'read' the trim of the mainsail, The flip-up rudder, being deeper than the keel, is thus unprotected and therefore subject to damage or loss if a sudden shoal water situation is encountered and the flip-up mechanism isn't ready for it." [4]

This Hunter 185 is in excellent condition (under cover for 25 years) and must be seen. The interior and exterior surfaces are like new, and the boat has everything youd want in a small trailerable vessel. All lines lead to the cockpit for easy single-handling, equipped with an auto-helm autopilot and roller furling.

The Hunter 18.5 is a great boat for day sailing and is suitable for overnight: her cabin offers a V-berth that sleeps 2, a quarter berth that sleeps 1, a porta-potie, 2 side windows, built in coleman cooler, and a portable cook top. Outside her cockpit it seats 4 adults and features a large storage lazerette, a fiberglass motor mount and new tiller steering.

Equipment: Her auxiliary power is a newer Tohatsu 5HP, 4 cycle gas outboard motor, and a 3 gal. fuel tank with very few hours.

It features a shoal draft with 2-foot wing keel: dock lines, and fenders, life vests and tools included.If trailed, the Hunter 185 can be launched in shallow ramps; includes newer tires, main sail with cover, roller furling jib, new 12w battery, bilge pump, stainless steel bow pulpit, life lines, anchor with rode, depth finder, and VHF radio. Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. Comfort Ratio

The owner has kept the boat in good working condition. It does need bottom paint and prop cleaning and could use some touching up in areas. Solar panel on top of the bimini top. 1994 Hunter 29.5

This vessel is in very good condition for its age. The owner has added a nice water pressure gauge conveniently located at the engine. There are no signs of mold or mildew. Inside, it smelled and looked fresh and clean. Other than a slight bit of oxidation on the chrome, everything was in tip top shape and very impressive. The seller has taken pride in taking such good care of her. She and the owner just came back from a trip to the Keys. Per the seller, everything is in working order. Stock #391985 Classic 1994 Hunter sailboat that has has upgrades added Like most Hunter sailboats, the Hunter 29.5 offers maximum accommodations, a large comfortable cockpit, and reasonable sailing performance at an affordable price. The Hunter 29.5 was designed by Hunter's in-house staff under Rob Mazza. It exemplifies a boat that appears to have been designed from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Like all production boats in this size range, the Hunter 29.5 is constructed from fiberglass composites utilizing a modular type of construction. The hull, deck, structural grid, and interior components are molded separately and then assembled into the finished product with structural adhesives or secondary bonds of fiberglass and resin. The deck is cored with balsa wood, and the hull is a solid composite. There is a nice solid clear windshield which makes steering and navigating an easy task and also an upgraded hard top that will last a very long time. Also located atop the helm is a set of solar panels with a Jupiter inverter. The 29.5 has a rather large cockpit for her size that opens at the stern to a molded swim platform. At anchor, this becomes an integral part of the cockpit adding even more usable space. This is one of the 29.5's more appealing features, and it makes getting in and out of the water or dinghy quite easy. Wheel steering is at the helm at the aft end of the cockpit, and there are two seats incorporated into the stern rail for passenger seating. Although the seller has upgraded the wooden steering wheel, the stock wheel is included with this purchase. Because the side decks are narrow with rigging shrouds at the deck edge, to go forward, the best path is over the cabin trunk. The foredeck has a small anchor locker which will accommodate a 13-pound Danforth with chain leader and 100 feet of half-inch rode. There are also two sturdy anchor rollers forward. This vessel houses three anchors. Below deck, the cabin is wide open with the only privacy offered by a fully enclosed head. There is a V-berth forward, and the main saloon features a large U-shaped dinette that comfortably seats four adults. The head and a small hanging locker are to starboard, and the galley is to port with a two-burner non-pressurized alcohol stove, a refrigerator, and a single sink. Aft and below the cockpit is an athwartship double berth. Auxiliary power is provided by a two-cylinder, 18 hp Yanmar diesel contained in an engine box beneath the companionway steps. This workhorse of an engine dominates the market in boats of this size and is very dependable. Quick access for maintenance is limited but, if necessary, the engine box can be removed easily for more serious work. The 29.5 is designed with simplicity in mind, and the large mainsail and small fractional jib certainly make tacking and sail handling a breeze for the short-handed or single-handed sailor. Included you'll find an autopilot as well as an Autohelm handheld steering device Without a traveler, the mainsheet attaches to the steering console directly in front of the helmsman. Sheet winches are also within easy reach of the helm. The B&R rig features long spreaders that are swept back 30 degrees eliminating a backstay. This necessitates tacking downwind to avoid impaling the mainsail on the spreaders, but I think that most would not find this much of an inconvenience. With the proper tacking angles, this can actually be a faster way to sail downwind. 1998 Hunter 260 This boat is in like new condition. Draws only 18 inches when the center board is up. Boat is perfect as a trailer-able family cruiser. It is almost 8.5 feet wide and a little over 26 feet long. It has the new 260 layout with a wheel and a floor plan superior to the older Hunter 26.  There have been many additions to the boat. At the helm, we added engine controls to make available speed and shifting. The motor and rudder are linked so they both steer together. It has a Garmin 411 GPS sounder unit that provides depth and speed information in addition to geographic information. There is a bimini over the cockpit, a 25 watt CHF radio and an AM/FM Cd Stereo.  Shore power charger, butane stove, a cooler in the galley. It has a magna propane grill mounted on the railing. All safety equipment included. The bottom paint is in good condition and the tandem trailer is new.  Boat is currently docked on a freshwater lake in Central Florida near Orlando. 1993 Hunter Passage 42 - PROTEUS Set up for serious off-shore passage making and fully self-sufficient off-the-grid cruising. Has recently (beginning 2014) sailed in England, the coast of Europe and the western Med (2015) and crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean (Nov 2015). Came up through the Caribbean (spring 2016). This yacht was never chartered, always privately owned, and meticulously cared for. All servicing and installations were done to a high standard. All safety equipment is up-to-date. The yacht participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which requires a high standard of safety equipment, training, and inspections. The yacht has been certified as a Class-A offshore sailing yacht. All documentation is available and will be conveyed to future owner. The previous owners lived aboard, loved every minute of it, but are now moving back on land for a few years and do not want the boat to sit and atrophy. She needs to go to a good home and to someone who will continue the journey! She has taken care of her owners for years and will continue to do so for many years to come. S/V PROTEUS is "overbuilt" and designed for extended offshore passage-making and off-the-grid cruising. Just want to jump all the way down to the USVI instead of going the super-slow way all the way through the Bahamas? Okay. The previous owners just made a passage from the Dominican Republic straight to Ft.Lauderdale (March 2016). Seven days offshore? No problem. PROTEUS has a thicker hull, reinforced rigging, extra backstay (B&R rigs normally don't have them). Massive solar panels, watermaker, genset, wind generator – all these advanced features make for a yacht that can go anywhere, do anything, and actually be comfortable while doing it. The solar panels were upgraded in 2015, and the owners report that they lived entirely off the solar panels and almost never used the generator while underway. Occasionally, you'll hear people scoff at production yachts for being only for "coastal" cruising. "Oh, I'd never cross an ocean in that!" Not the Passage 42! Did I mention she's cruised in the North Sea and English Channel recently? When there were only aluminum-hull Ovni's and other "extreme" sailboats and expedition yachts at the docks, PROTEUS was right in there with the best of them. Hunter 18.5 trailer modifications

We have a hunter 18.5 trailer that needs some work done to it. Since we are having to bring it in we are wanting to get some modifications done to make launching/retrieving easier since we've heard that's a good idea. I'm looking for suggestions on what specifically we should have done.  

One thought would be to ask the folks who told you it would be a good idea. And tell us what issues you are having. Wait. That's two thoughts.  

I agree with Kermit on this one, until you actually try to launch your boat you have no idea what problems you are trying to fix. That said, the 18.5 is a neat boat and unless someone has screwed with the trailer or changed trailers it is a easy boat to launch, unless your ramp is extremely shallow or there is no water. In my opinions sailboats are a bit more difficult to launch that say a john boat or a bass boat, but your 18.5 should be about as easy as they come assuming the ramp is not too flat and you have water.

Virus but was restoring an indoor pool for a good friend of mine at a time when I was fiberglassing, applying gel coat, laying 2000E interprotect and so forth as the fumes did not help the old throat or gizzard of mine. Bout finished but taking the week off for sure to get back to my old snarly self. Thanks for your concern.

@IBsailor I got the first load of the 18.5 when it came out. the general complaint I had was of course the wing keels hanging up I think on the keel guides. Please send me a photo of your trailer specifically with boat on trailer from the side (rear) and the back so I can refresh my memory and comment. Thank you. Flynhi4u, roger that and taking the full week off before finishing pool. Like working on a sailboat hull again.
