Your Yacht Adventure Begins

Set sail on your yacht adventure after the captain’s safety/route briefing. We will embark on a cruise around Singapore’s Southern Islands (Sister’s Islands, St. John’s Island & Kusu Island). Your sailing journey will take approximately 25 mins. Enjoy the ride.

The yacht will anchor at Lazarus Island for 2-3 hours of kayaking, paddle-boarding, suntanning, swimming or fun on the beach. While the yacht crew prepares your food & beverages (refer to add-on), your guest can enjoy the water sports, tan on the sun deck or explore the island. 

Enjoy the City Skyline

On our way back to the marina, admire the breathtaking sunset or Singapore's iconic city skyline of Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer. This is a recommended itinerary; you may speak to your yacht captain before your trip to customize your itinerary or sailing routes. 

• Inclement Weather – What happens if there is a bad weather? If the weather is inclement at the time of the charter at the point of departure such that the captain judges it unsafe to go out to sea, the company will offer guests a reschedule of their charter without charge, subject to availability, provided the following conditions are met: Captain has the final say whether or not it is unsafe to go out to sea. No reliance on the weather forecast, only actual weather conditions observed; Weather conditions are to be taken at the time of charter and at the point of departure, and not before, or at any other location; All guests must be present at the point of departure, i.e., at the marina, at the time of the charter; If the weather turns inclement during the charter, after the boat has left the marina, the Captain shall exercise his discretion and may head back to port if the weather conditions are inclement enough to pose a risk to the safety of the guests. Singapore is located in the tropics, so occasional rain showers can be frequent, although heavy showers are typically short-lived. Passengers on-board the charter can still remain outside under the fly bridge cover on the top deck, or retreat to the air-conditioned saloon and cabins, which will still provide you sea views & breeze. Please be advised that once the yacht has departed the Marina, the charter is considered to have been fulfilled, and no cancellations or refunds are provided.
• COVID-19 Policies & Practices If the company is prevented from conducting the charter due to factors beyond its control, such as changing government regulations or Covid-19 restrictions, a rescheduling of the affected charters will be offered to the client without charge, subject to availability, and to the resumption of such conditions necessary to conduct the charter. If the guests wish to reschedule charters for their own reasons, and not due to any inability on the part of the company to perform the charter or due to changing government regulations or Covid-19 restrictions, the guests will be following our usual reschedule and cancellation policy below.
• What is your rescheduling policy? If the request is 30 days before the charter date, the rescheduling is provided free of charge. If the request is 14 days before the charter date, the rescheduling is allowed with an administrative fee of S$250. If it is less than 14 days prior to the charter date, rescheduling will incur a 50% charge of the charter fee. Validity for the reschedule booking must take place within 3 months from the first original booking date. Rescheduling due to bad weather is provided free of charge. Please see our Inclement Weather Policy for more information.
• What is your cancellation policy? If the cancellation request is made 60 days prior to the charter date, you will receive a full refund. Cancellation made more than 30 days prior to the departure will receive a full refund less an administration fee of S$500. For cancellations made less than 30 days prior to departure, no refund of the deposit will be made, or 50% of the fees will be refunded if full payment has been paid, whichever is applicable. For cancellations made less than 14 days prior to departure, the full amount will be forfeited.
• How do I know if my booking is confirmed? All bookings are subjected to confirmation by the company, whereupon an invoice shall be issued. Bookings are only confirmed upon full receipt of payment and acknowledgement by the company. You will receive a confirmation email and voyage pass. In the voyage pass, the contact details of your captain will be written. If you would like to customise your sailing routes, you may speak to the captain before the charter to coordinate your itinerary. • Can I pay a deposit instead of a full payment? Unfortunately, we require full payment for confirmation.
• What are your modes of payment? We accept the following payment modes: PayNow or Paylah! Credit Card PayPal Internet Bank Transfer Kindly note that online credit card payments and PayPal have admin charges. The admin charges go to the bank and payment company; Yacht Luxe does not profit from the admin charges. For 0% processing admin fees, please opt to pay through PayNow, Paylah! or Internet Bank Transfer.
• Are there any hidden cost? No. Yacht Luxe prides itself on providing the most transparent cost to you. The full cost will be reflected on your yacht booking invoice emailed to you.
• Can I book an overnight charter? Yes, you can book an overnight charter. Pricing from overnight charter starts from S$2,000 per night onwards. If you would like to book an overnight charter, please contact us directly.
• When can I get in touch with the captain of the yacht? As soon as you’ve completed your booking, you can get in touch with the captain. Our captains are highly qualified and knowledgeable in their yachting field. If you would like to customise your sailing routes or decorate the yacht, you may speak to the captain before the charter to coordinate.
• Is a child/baby considered as a passenger? Yes. Every individual, no matter the age, is considered a passenger.
• Are dogs allowed onboard? Some of the yachts allow dogs onboard. However, some yachts do not allow any pets onboard. Every yacht listing will indicate whether it is pet friendly or if no pets are allowed onboard. If you would like to bring your dog on a yacht, you can select the add-on option to bring a pet. Please note that the additional charges are required to reimburse the crew for the post-cleaning cost of the pet’s fur on the yacht.
• Yacht itinerary or sailing routes – Can I change my itinerary? As soon as you’ve completed your booking, you will receive a voyage pass along with the contact details of your captain. If you would like to customise your sailing routes, you may speak to the yacht captain before the charter to coordinate the itinerary. As long as the time and regulations permit, our yacht captain and crew will gladly take you on your yacht adventure.
• Food & Beverages (F&B) – Will F&B be included? Food and drinks are not included in our charter rates. However, you may check out our BBQ menu or Fullerton menu available as an add-on option. You can save the hassle and order food and drinks from us. When you are onboard, sit back and relax as our crew will be ready to serve the food and drinks at your desired time. Utensils and cutlery will be provided for you. If you would like to prepare your own food or bring a private chef on board, most of the yachts have a 168-can ice-cooler, refrigerator, stove and microwave. Please refer to the yacht’s amenities for more information about the yacht.
• Can we bring our own food? Are there any corkage fees for bringing our own food and drinks? Of course not. You may bring your own foods, drinks and alcoholic drinks at no additional cost. Kindly remember to bring along your utensils and cutlery for your own food.
• Are there any corkage fees for alcohol? Of course not. You may bring your alcohol at no additional cost. Kindly remember to bring your own plastic wine glasses.
• Do I need to bring my own utensils, plates and wine glasses? If you’re ordering food and drinks from us, we have disposable utensils, plates and cups that are available onboard. Our yachts have plastic wine glasses, so you can keep your fragile glasses at home. If you’re bringing your own food and drinks, there will be no additional charge. However, we will not be providing the utensils, plates and wine glasses. Kindly remember to bring your set of plates, utensils and plastic wine glasses. Before boarding the yacht, the items can be purchased at the cold storage near the yacht club.
• Do I need to bring ice? If you’re ordering food and drinks from us, we will provide 18kg of ice in our ice cooler for chilling drinks, so you don't have to lug packs of ice over! If you’re bringing your own food and drinks, you can purchase a bag of ice at the cold storage near the yacht club before boarding the yacht.
• BBQ Grill – If I am renting a BBQ Grill, will I have to grill the food on my own?" Enjoy the time with your treasured ones; our yacht crew will grill the food for you. Sit back and relax on the yacht, and our crew will grill and bring the BBQ food to you. The BBQ services/rental is a nominal fee for the crew to set up the pit, cook and serve the food, as well as clean up the pit.
• BBQ Grill – Can I grill the food on my own using your BBQ pit? As our BBQ grill is a large one and for safety reasons, only our chef can do the grilling.
• Music – Can I play my own music on board? Yes, of course. Our yachts have portable Bluetooth speakers. Go ahead and pair your smartphones or iPads.
• Yacht Captain & Crew – Will there be someone to drive the yacht? Yes, there will be a captain and crew onboard. Our yacht captains are highly qualified and knowledgeable in their yachting field. If you need any help onboard, please do not hesitate to reach out to our friendly yacht captain and crew.
• Yacht Decorations – Can I decorate my yacht ahead of the booking? As soon as you’ve completed your booking, you will receive a voyage pass along with the contact details of your captain. If you would like to decorate the yacht, you may speak to the captain before the charter to coordinate the decorations. We will accord up to half an hour for decorations; clients will need to book more rental time if they need more time. Notably, do not use strong adhesives that will damage the surface of the yachts/boats.
• Essential – What do I wear? Yachting is a fun, and laid-back experience – so formal attire is not recommended in the warm and humid weather. The key thing is sun protection, so bring a hat and sunglasses for day charters. You might also want to go swimming during the day, so bring your swimming costumes and gear, towels and a change of clothes if necessary.
• Packing List – What should I bring? Sea Bands or sea sickness tablets – tablets should be taken 30 minutes before the charter. Swimming gear, swimming & bath towels (Please bring your own for hygiene purposes) Dry clothing in case of heavy showers Sunglasses and sunscreen Camera to capture your memorable outing Bluetooth from iPod /iPhone /Android – you can plug your favourite tunes into the on-board entertainment system by syncing in with Bluetooth
• Will I need bring my passport? Our leisure charters are within the Singapore waters. You will not need to bring your passport. Passports are required for extended charters outside of Singapore waters, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. In the event that you will be embarking on an overseas yachting adventure, our team at Yacht Luxe will drop you a reminder to bring your passports.
• Are there life jackets on board? Yes. Of course.
• Motion Sickness – What if I have motion sickness? No worries! Remember to bring a sea band (elastic wristbands that use acupressure to alleviate nausea) or seasick pills (Blackmores Travel Calm Ginger pills). Both are available at most Watsons/ Guardian outlets. While onboard, you may try to avoid going indoors (cabins or saloons). Instead, you can stay on deck and soak in the fresh air and breeze. Once the yacht is safely anchored, you can jump into the sea for a swim. Or you can take a walk along the beach or Southern Islands.
• Tipping – Do I have to tip the yacht crew? If you feel that your yacht crew has exceeded your expectations of excellent service for you and all your guests, a gratuity will always be most appreciated. Our crew work very hard under rain or shine to ensure a safe, smooth and memorable experience for all guests on board, so any token of appreciation will go a long way in affirming our efforts and encouraging us to do even better. Please feel free to pass it to them directly.

Nice yatch – spacious for party of 5, well maintained and clean, reasonably priced, good crew and service. Had a very memorable evening with family – recommend taking the addl. option of Marina View sail to enjoy more time sailing, as trip to Lazarus and back can be short.

What to prepare.

SunRise can take 18 guests while SunRider can take 16 guests, regardless of age. 1 infant is also considered as 1 guest. 

All charters will be accompanied by 1 Captain and 1 crew. 

There are Visitor Carparks in both One15 Marina and Marina at Keppel Bay. Please note we are tenants of both marinas so we are not able to issue complimentary tickets. 

The cruises carries a basic public liability insurance for its passengers, however personal travel / cancellation / accident insurance is strongly recommended.

SunRise has a master bedroom cabin that you can use if you need to rest during the charter. SunRider unfortunately does not come with cabins. 

There are no restrictions. 

Mobile phone coverage is dependent on the cruise destination and your phone provider. In an emergency the yacht can also be contacted by radio. We don’t have wifi onboard, yacht charters are a great opportunity for you to detox from the screen. 

All of our yachts have either 12 volt sockets or standard 3 pin plug sockets. You are more than welcome to use these sockets when you are in a marina and the boat is connected to shore power.

All of our yachts fully comply with the code of practice for small commercial vessels and meet all requirements as set down by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore! All boats are checked before and after each trip and all safety equipment is serviced on a regular basis.

There are heads (toilets) and showers onboard the yacht.

Smoking is strictly NOT permitted onboard! For safety reasons, smoking in cabins and staterooms is prohibited on our yachts.

While our yachts are both double hulled catamarans designed to be more stable on sea, if you know you are susceptible, then it is worth buying some motion sickness tablets from the pharmacy and bringing them with you.

Minimum duration of charter is 2 hours while the maximum duration is 12 hours. 

We are not GST registered hence NO GST will be imposed!

Our yacht welcomes children! However, the crew cannot provide child-minding or babysitting services. Parents or accompanying adults should take care of them at all times. Life jackets will be provided for children aged 5 and above. For children below 5, we recommend bringing your own life jackets. Life jackets can be bought at Decathlon. 

There is no age limit! However, one important point that we DO need to make ( and of course, this doesn’t apply just to age)—is that a yacht does need a certain amount of physical mobility. You need to be comfortable climbing over one boat to another to get to dock at times; in and out of inflatable dinghies; across a narrow gangplank from boat to shore, and so forth.

In order to secure a yacht for charter, a fully signed charter agreement must be completed. 100% charter fee must be paid to confirm a booking.

Pets are not allowed onboard for health and safety reasons, and sea travel can be extremely uncomfortable for some animals.

Yes, most other yachts do not allow outside caters, but on our yachts clients may use outside catering services. If you any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are your booking times.

We have either morning slots that starts anytime in the morning until 2pm.  Afternoon booking starts from 3pm onwards. Minimum duration of 5hrs is required for booking times.

Can I bring my own wine for the trip?

Yes, you may bring your own wine. No corkage fees will be charged to you.

Can I bring my own food and drinks for the trip?

Yes, you may bring your own food and drinks for the trip.

Is baby considered one headcount?

Yes, it is according to MPA rules and regulations.

Do you accept soft booking?

All bookings are on first come first served basis upon full settlment. We are unable to accept deposit or partial payment.

What are your preferred modes of payment?

We are able to accept payment via PayNow, FAST Transfer or IBG. Details of our bank account no will be advised in the official invoice.

Credit card payment is subject to 4% admin charges levied by the payment channel provider and is payable by the client.

How do I book the yacht?

Do you have children life jackets on board?

Yes, we have life jackets for children as young as 2 years old.

Where is the meeting venue for the trip?

Please meet at 7-11 at One 15 Marina, Sentosa Cove. As you need walking time to the berth where the yacht is parked, please be advised to meet 15 mins at the mentioned venue  before the departure time.  As our charters are on scheduled timing, punctuality of the guests is required.

What is your wet weather policy?

What is your advise for a person with motion sickness for this trip?

We advise taking motion sickness or ginger pills 30 minutes before departure and avoiding staying indoors. 

Are toilets with shower facilities available for use?

Yes, we have shower facilities for guests and family members to clean up themselves after the wet activities. Do bring along your own toiletries if you require a full shower after the activities.

Do I need to bring extra clohtings for the trip?

Yes, as there are water activities the chances of getting wet are high. Please be advised to bring extra clothings to change into so as not to fall sick due to wet clothings.

Is there mobile phone coverage in the yacht?

This is dependent on the signal coverage of your telco company. You should still be able to use your phone as usual since we are still within Singapore waters.

Can I smoke in the yacht?

Yes, only in the restricted area. Please ask our crew for an ashtray.

Are pets allowed on the yacht?

Our yacht is pets friendly. Hence, pets are allowed on the yacht as long as they remain leashed throughout the charter. In addition, all pets are allowed only on the outer saloon area. The indoor saloon, galley and cabin area is strictly out of bound to pets.

Can I charge my mobile phone in the yacht?

Yes, we have power points for your chargigng purpose in case your mobile phone runs of battery. Please check with our crew or captain on location of these power points.

Does the yacht have wifi?

No, we do not provide wifi on the yacht.

Do I need to observe Safety Management Measures (SMM) since Covid-19 is still a prevalent issue?

Our crew will be conducting a pre departure briefing which covers the do’s and don’s for SMM. Do observe the guidelines shared by the crew.

Do you take in pregnant ladies on the yacht?

We do not have restrictions on pregnant ladies to join us on board. However, it would be best to consult your doctor on this before going ahead to confirm a charter with us.

Lazarus Island

St john's island, pulau hantu, kusu island, sentosa & fireworks, sister's island.

Sisters’ Islands are two of the Southern Islands in Singapore and are located to the south of the main island of Singapore. Big Sister’s Island, about 39,000 square metres (9.6 acres) in area faces the open sea, while Little Sister’s Island, about 17,000 m2 (4.2 acres) in area faces the mainland. The two islands are separated by a narrow channel which makes the islands a great spot for fishing in between the formations of land. The common sea star, blue-spot nudibranch, octopus and five-spot anemone shrimp can be spotted during low tide in that area. Legend has it that the islands were formed out of two orphaned sisters. After a pirate kidnapped the younger sister, the elder one swam after the boat and drowned. Grief stricken, the younger sister jumped into the sea and drowned too. The next day, two islands formed at the spot where they died and were henceforth known as Sisters’ Islands.

If the weather is inclement enough, such as to pose a safety risk, we offer a free postponement / replacement subject to certain conditions:

1. Weather condition to be taken at the time and place of charter. That is to say, no reliance on weather forecasts, no asking to postpone 2 hours ahead of time, etc. 2. Guests must be present at the marina at the time of charter 3. Captain makes the final judgement. If it is just raining slightly, most of the time, we will proceed. 4. If the weather turns inclement during the charter, after the boat has left the marina, the Captain shall exercise his discretion and may head back to port if the weather conditions are inclement enough to pose a risk to the safety of the guests. In such an instance, there is no refund, but we will offer to reschedule to another date, which we mutually agreed on the same value.

What is the maximum number of guests you can charter?

Commercial charters typically accommodate up to 50-55 guests due to insurance considerations. Everyone, regardless of age, is counted as a guest.

At SAILUXO, we match yachts to your event type and requirements. For larger gatherings, a creative solution can involve joining multiple yachts. However, bookings operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. Therefore, we recommend securing your charter 3-4 months in advance for special occasions.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

Yacht charter costs vary depending on size and guest count:

Small Sized yacht: Suitable for 10 guests, prices range from $500-$1000 for 3-4 hours.

Mid-Sized yacht: Prices range between $1500-$3000.

Premium & Luxury Super yacht: Prices range between $4000-$15,000.

Please note these costs can fluctuate based on the number of guests. For the best advice, we recommend speaking with our yacht specialists.

Can I bring my own food and drinks on the yacht?

Absolutely, you're welcome to cater your own food and drinks.

Can we bring our own alcohol onboard?

Absolutely, guests are welcome to bring their own alcohol. However, please note that some yachts have specific rules regarding red wine . In case of any spillage causing stains or damage to the yacht's facilities, guests may be liable for the cleanup or repair costs.

Private jet and yachts seized as three arrested in £76m luxury care homes raid

Three people have been arrested as part of a sting by the Serious Fraud Office into property developer the Carlauren Group.

A private jet and two yachts have been seized, as three people have been arrested, in a £76m raid on a group who ran luxury care homes.

Two sites were raided across St Leonard's, Dorset, and Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, as part of the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) probe, supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The investigation is looking into the UK registered property developer, the Carlauren Group, which collapsed into administration in November 2019.

When it folded, the SFO said that it led to some elderly residents being forced to move out, and left 600 investors out of pocket.

The Carlauren Group bought 23 properties across the UK, often former hotels including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham, and allegedly claimed to offer annual 10 per cent returns to investors as it sought to turn the buildings into high-end care homes.

However, the SFO said only nine of these became operational and some continued as hotels instead of care homes.

Alongside that, the group allegedly purchased a number of supercars, including two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT, a private jet and two yachts.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: "This company's abrupt collapse has created turmoil and enormous anxiety for many, with elderly people forced to vacate their homes and investors left with nothing.

"Today's arrests are a major development in our investigation and a step towards getting the answers so many people need."

The group was said to have had 600 people and companies invest in the scheme through the purchase of rooms that were to be rented out to the elderly.

This was inside luxury facilities that boasted of swimming pools, room service and other amenities.

According to the SFO, the rooms were advertised and sold with a guaranteed annual payout and opportunity to sell the asset back for a profit after 10 years

I tried the luxury movie-theater chain Cinépolis. The premium perks didn't outweigh the huge drawbacks that come with them.

• I'm a frequent moviegoer who tried out the luxury movie-theater chain Cinépolis for the first time. 
• The ticket wasn't that expensive, but the food and service charges seemed a bit pricey.
• The table-side service was convenient, but it got super distracting throughout the whole movie. 

Last year I went to the movies over 60 times.

I usually see them at my local theater chain, AMC, but with fewer American adults going to the movies these days — less than before the coronavirus pandemic — some chains are pulling out all of the stops to draw people in.

And Cinép olis , a theater chain that offers a "luxury movie-going" experience, recently caught my eye.

It's been around since 1971 and is currently one of the biggest movie-theater chains in the world , with over 800 locations worldwide.

Here's what it was like to visit for the first time — and why I'm not sure I'll be back.

Purchasing my ticket online was pretty easy

I wanted to see "Drive-Away Dolls" since it was the week of its release, but the Cinépolis near me didn't have screenings available. It was available at my local AMC, but Cinépolis has about half the screens, so it can't show every movie in theaters.

Instead, I went with my second choice: "Bob Marley: One Love."

I bought my ticket on the Cinépolis site on Friday afternoon for a showing that night. After I selected my movie and showtime, I chose the seat I wanted and paid for my ticket. Plenty of seats were available.

After fees and taxes, my $17 ticket cost just over $20. I'd expected it to cost a bit more since it was for a "luxury" experience — and a ticket to a regular screening at my local AMC around the same time would've cost $21.

I arrived early since wasn't able to order food or drinks in advance

When I arrived, I had the QR code for my ticket pulled up on my phone.

But I didn't see anyone at the entrance of the theater, so I walked right in without having my ticket scanned. Maybe sneaking into showings isn't a huge concern for employees since you must reserve a specific seat.

I got to the theater about 30 minutes before showtime, which is when movie previews actually begin.

Before the previews, Cinépolis showed advertisements for local businesses, movie trivia, and info about the theater.

I thought it was nice that ads were for local places instead of big brands and massive corporations, which is the norm at other chains I visit.

The lounge seats recline all the way back for ultimate comfort

The theater had leather lounge chairs that reclined way back to an almost lying-down position. I was able to put my feet all the way up.

Notably, there was only one button to control the reclining levels of the seats.

There's no way to have your feet down but your seat back at Cinépolis — it's all or nothing. At my local AMC, I can control the recline of the footrest and chair back separately, which makes for a more comfortable experience.

The seats are also set up in pairs and you can lift the armrest in between them. I thought this was a nice touch for couples.

Service came to me with the touch of a button

At Cinépolis, there's no concession stand — the server assigned to your seat takes your order and delivers any food or drinks you request.

They put your card on file during your first order and can be called to your seat throughout the movie at the touch of a button.

Unfortunately, the button for my seat was completely missing. I had to use the button for the seat next to me, which wasn't a huge issue.

I wonder what would have happened had someone else been seated there and I didn't have access to a button at all.

There were high-quality food and drink options, but the prices seemed high to me

I could order cocktails, beers, full entrées, desserts, or just snacks.

Many of the options sounded of restaurant quality. I saw lobster grilled cheese, rib-eye sandwiches, burgers, and even grain bowls. The prices also seemed like what you might find at a restaurant, with most dishes between $15 and $20.

Popcorn ($10.50) and soft drinks ($8.50) include free refills throughout the movie.

The fish and chips I'd planned on ordering weren't available, so I went with chicken tenders and fries for $15.50. I also got popcorn.

The chicken tenders tasted high quality, and the fries were crisp and delicious. When I ran out of ketchup, it was easy to call my server and ask for more.

But I still felt the prices seemed a bit high for what I got.

Although it came with unlimited refills, my soda was about $9, and there was only one size available. If you didn't get at least one refill, you wouldn't be drinking your money's worth.

The same thing applies to the bottomless popcorn — it's awesome if you really plan to chow down, but not a great value if you're not.

Lastly, at Cinépolis, you also have to factor in a tip for your server. I did a typical 20%. I could see how a date night or family outing at Cinépolis could get pretty expensive very quickly.

The on-demand service distracted me throughout the movie

It's pretty awesome to get a soda refill halfway through a movie without leaving your seat. However, it's not awesome to listen to the couple next to you order another round of popcorn during the middle of a pivotal movie scene.

The servers were also carrying around tablets with incredibly bright screens, which was distracting once the movie began and the theater got dark.

I found the movie wasn't super loud, perhaps because moviegoers need to be able to communicate with their server during the showing. I kind of missed the seat-shaking intensity I usually experience at movies.

It was also distracting to see so many people using their phone flashlights to examine their food and drinks as they got delivered in the middle of the movie.

About 45 minutes before the movie ended, servers brought out checks. This is usually a pretty high-stakes point in a movie and probably the worst possible time for staff to walk up and down the aisles of the theater, closing tabs and asking people if they need to-go boxes for their food.

That said, the near-constant presence of staff seemed to come with one perk: less bad behavior.

It seemed moviegoers were more likely to behave with theater employees walking around. No one talked during the whole movie, nor did anyone spend most of it taking flash photos of the screen (I've seen both many times).

But this also means it's much more difficult to commit some more beloved movie-theater sins , like sneaking in your own drinks and snacks.

Cinépolis would be great without other attendees, but I'll stick to AMC for now

Cinépolis stood out with its high-quality food and bottomless soft drinks and popcorn, but the table-side service didn't fully wow me.

After all, at many chain theaters, you can schedule food and non-alcoholic drinks to be delivered to your seat when you purchase your ticket.

And when on-call service is applied to a crowded theater, the distractions from other moviegoers take away from the movie. I couldn't imagine seeing something here that demands my full attention, like "Dune: Part Two," at Cinépolis.

I also thought Cinépolis' rewards program sounded pretty good — it's free to join, and customers can eventually earn a free ticket if they spend enough on tickets and concessions (alcohol not included).

But, as someone who loves going to the movies, AMC Stubs A-List is still a much better value. For about $25 a month, I can see three movies a week, about 12 a month. When broken down, each movie ticket is about $2.

I'd consider returning to Cinépolis for specialty showings, like concert films or $5 fan favorites the theater brings back. But for a better experience overall — and a better film selection and value for a frequent moviegoer like me — I'm sticking with AMC.

‘Fancy cars and flashy yachts’: criminals living the high life targeted by Victoria’s unexplained wealth laws

Police minister says those who ‘swan around with ill-gotten gains’ will be pursued in reforms that flip onus of proof

Organised crime figures who splash out on yachts, penthouse suites and sex workers will be targeted by the Victorian government, under new laws that will force them to repay any wealth they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The state’s attorney general, Jaclyn Symes, and police minister, Anthony Carbines, on Tuesday announced they will introduce the Confiscation Amendment (Unexplained Wealth) Bill to parliament, in an effort to deprive criminals of the “use and enjoyment of their unexplained wealth”.

Symes said the new laws would flip the onus from police and prosecutors – who currently have to prove a direct link between a criminal and their wealth – to the offender.

“The barrier has been is that we’ve had to demonstrate that [wealth] is connected to criminal activity. The onus now will be flipped under this legislation, you will have to demonstrate that you obtained it by legal means,” she said.

“It’s very likely unless they won Tattslotto and they can show their winning ticket. They probably were doing illegal activities to obtain their wealth.”

Carbines said the changes will also capture assets bought in a partner or relative’s name as well as gifts, “consumable wealth and wealth that has been gifted, disposed of or expended”.

“If you want to swan around with ill-gotten gains and wealth that doesn’t belong to you, that you’ve accrued illegally, police will be able to pursue you. They’ll be able to pursue your family and your partners,” he said.

“If organised crime bosses think that they can have the fancy cars, flashy yachts, spend their money on hotels and strippers, if you draw your attention to yourself, Victoria police will be after you.

“They will be able to use these laws to crack out and reclaim the stolen wealth that ill gotten gains, and it’s about continuing to make sure we put the pressure on organised crime.”

The new laws will allow the Director of Public Prosecutions to apply to a court for an order if there are reasonable grounds to suspect that a person’s total wealth exceeds their lawfully acquired wealth by at least $200,000.

If a person can’t satisfy a court that they have lawfully obtained their wealth, a court may order them to pay the state the value of anything they cannot prove was lawfully acquired.

The laws have been modelled on those currently in place in Western Australian, but are also similar to New South Wales’ laws, which were also bolstered in 2023 to allow police to seize and freeze wealth and assets without a specific offence.

The opposition leader, John Pesutto, questioned why it had taken so long for the government to introduce the legislation, though he said he supported the concept in principal.

“Frankly, after 10 years, you have to ask, what is it actually doing to crack down on organised crime?” he said.
