Best Times to Vacation in Tortola

When planning a sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands, weather conditions are the most important factor to consider. While sailing events on the island and coinciding tourist fluctuations may influence your decision, the heat and hurricane season will make the greatest impact on your Tortola boat charter experience.

Most BVI sailing trips are scheduled between late October (after the worst of the hurricane season) until the New Year, and between mid-April to the end of May. We had the BEST vacation on "Sol Liv". Captain James and Chef Robyn were easy and fun to be around, and provided wonderful - and seemingly effortless- hospitality. The boat was beautiful, spotless, and spacious and somehow never seemed crowded--plenty of room to spread out and catch a nap when sailing. In addition to sailing the boat, Captain James was a master-bartender; he created a different "captain's cocktail" (aka "sundowners") each day, even providing the kids with beautiful nonalcoholic versions. And Robyn--she is truly a master chef. The creations that she made were not just visually stunning, but delicious as well. The four kids on the boat had a blast; in addition to swimming and snorkeling, they had jousting competitions on the paddleboards, and even tried to catch one of the tarpons that orbited the boat at night (no luck). I am so grateful to have been on this trip.

The boat was clean and in pristine condition. The layout was so well thought out. We had 12 people in our party and never felt crowded on Sol Liv. Tony and Claudia took great care of us and made sure we all had fun. We have experienced other charter companies before and it is not the same as Voyage. We will definitely travel with Voyage again in the future!

My family and I just got back from a sailing trip in the BVIs with Voyage Charters and, although I had never been sailing and had no idea what to expect going in, it exceeded all expectations I could have ever had. Our boat was named Sol Liv and it was BEAUTIFUL and so fancy! There were 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, not including crew quarters. Even though we had a family of 11 onboard, we never felt crowded and like we were constantly on top of each other. We also had our own Chef (Danielle, Denzie as Ryan calls her) and Captain (Ryan) who were both incredible. They knew the islands very well and always had a super fun day planned for us. My mom went into the trip with a few places she wanted to see/visit, which were accommodated, but some of the stops were places Ryan and Danielle recommended which we really appreciated since they are locals to the area! Danielle, was outstanding and made the most delicious meals with recipes I had never had before. Every meal we had was delicious and I am still in awe that she was able to cook that efficiently for 11 people. She would even go into town to acquire local foods so that everything was nice and fresh. I hope she makes a cookbook because I need those recipes! The Captain, Ryan, was also wonderful and went above and beyond to take us to the best spots in the BVIs. He was always ready with the dinghy to take us to shore whenever we wanted. He also went out of his way to take us on 2 separate hikes to places he thought we would like and had pretty views (first along the ridge on Norman Island, then at Cane Garden Bay). My brother and mom also lost their sunglasses in the water and Ryan went down and retrieved them for them. Danielle and Ryan were such a hospitable crew and felt like part of the family the whole trip (they even joined us for family game night 😊 ). I highly recommend Voyage Charters, especially if you have Ryan and Danielle onboard. We will definitely be back and will request this dynamic duo!!

There was plenty for all of us to do - my kids are 14, 12 and 8, and it was the perfect mix of a relaxing and active vacation. Captain Tony knew of our interests from the Preference Packet ahead of time and set a course of travel through the BVIs based on our interests. Once he got to know us even better during the trip, at various times he asked us our preference of activities and was flexible to amend the schedule to accommodate our interests. His sailing expertise made us ALL feel very comfortable and relaxed! (We had never lived on a boat before!) Chef Claudia made delicious meals for us every day! She too had carefully read our Preference Sheets and knew what types of food my family likes best. The variety and depth of the food was amazing, and the timing of when we eat was always perfect! Together, they created a vacation that included lots of snorkeling, swimming, sunning, paddle-boarding, kayaking, and hiking (when we stopped on land). They know the BVIs so well so therefore knew all the best places - both known and less known!, and shared those with us. Not only was it a vacation we will never forget, but I am confident we will be lifelong friends with Tony and Claudia! Thank you Voyage Charters for the trip of a lifetime!

Tortola | The Main BVI Island

Tortola is the British Virgin Islands’ most famous and central island. It has beautiful, soft, white-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and sheltered, yacht-filled harbors. Many yacht charter companies have their main bases on this island. You’ll begin your Tortola Yacht Charter by exploring the British Virgin Islands.

Tortola is warm year-round. The winter months also have low humidity and rainfall. We recommend a windbreaker or sweater when sailing from December to March. Meanwhile, July, August, and September are the hottest months, and hurricane season is from June through November.

Tortola | Things to see and do

• Spend a day in the capital of Road Town . You’ll find interesting shops such as Sunny Caribbee Spice Shop & Art Gallery, East Caribbean Salt & Soap Company, or Pusser’s Outpost. 
• Head to the beach . You’ll find dozens of sandy, palm-shaded beaches, including Brewer’s Bay and Smuggler’s Cove. It is also home to the famous Cane Garden Bay and Long Bay Beach.
• Surf . Popular surf spots include Cane Garden Bay, Josiah’s Bay, and Apple Bay.
• Learn to kitesurf at KiteSurf BVI.
• Scuba dive .
• Explore Tortola’s history. Visit the 1780 Lower Estate Sugar Works Museum, Fort Burt, and Mount Healthy Windmill. You can also explore Callwood’s Rum Distillery, J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, Old Government House Museum, and VI Folk Museum.
• If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also take the Original Virgin Canopy Tour. On tour, you’ll likewise have breathtaking views of Tortola and the surrounding islands.
• Dine . Taste Caribbean local food, such as Roti at Roti Palace. Or try Mediterranean Bistro so you can enjoy an elegant lunch or dinner,
• If you’re in Tortola during the full moon , join the fun at the Full Moon Party in Trellis Bay.
• Hike . Mount Sage is the highest point on Tortola. It has an elevation of approximately 1,716 feet above sea level. Enjoy panoramic views of the island and its surroundings from atop the mountain.

Harbour View Marine Center. A full-service marina offering 22 slips, ten moorings, fuel, fresh water, electricity, shower facilities, and garbage disposal. In addition, there’s a restaurant and pool bar, guest rooms (double or single), marine chandlery, and an ice cream shop.

Manuel Reef Marina. This Tortola marina has 48 slips with a 6.5-foot depth. It has 110v (30 Amp)/220v (50 Amp) electricity, water, showers, ADSL WiFi internet, cable TV, and telephone hookup.

Nanny Cay Marina. This marina has a modern and naturally sheltered marina with berths for 320 yachts and two fuel docks. It also has a pump-out station, 120/220V electricity, luxury shower facilities, and restrooms.

There is also water and ice from Nanny Cay’s Reverse Osmosis plant, garbage disposal, and 100% backup power. Other amenities include high-speed internet, a swimming pool, a beach, laundry, and postal services.

Village Cay Marina . This marina has three piers with 106 berthing slips. It can even accommodate vessels up to 180′ in length with a maximum 11-foot draft.

Amenities include a chandlery, restaurant, and fuel station. In addition, there’s ice, showers, laundry service, complimentary cable, and WiFi.

• A Bit of Everything in Tortola

The island of Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands . Here you’ll find white-sand beaches, dining, shopping, and plenty of sightseeing. Road Town, the British Virgin Islands’s capital, is a boating activity hub. The Sage Mountain National Park offers hiking trails and panoramic views in the island’s southwest.

Expect a warm, tropical climate on Tortola. Since the island is mountainous, there are some regional weather variations, such as cooler temperatures in the highest parts of the mountains.

Places to See

• Cane Garden Bay . The most popular beach on the island that’s worth a visit. You’ll find chair and umbrella rentals as well as restaurants and bars. The water is clear and calm and perfect for families.
• Soper’s Hole . Named after former plantation owner McCuthbert Soper in the 18th century, this anchorage is a yachter’s dream. Quaint shops, bars, and cafes line the waterfront.
• Sage Mountain . The highest point in Tortola and US Virgin Islands at 1,716 feet. Take one of several marked trails to the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding islands.

Things to Do

• Visit a beach . Tortola is world-famous for its fine white-sand beaches and calm crystal blue water. All of the beaches are beautiful. However, Cane Garden Bay and Smugglers’ Cove are some more popular beaches.
• Surf. Josiah’s Bay has pretty good waves, especially in the winter months. Also, Apple Bay.
• Hike. There’s a trail for every fitness level, from strolls in town to more adventurous hikes.
• Shop. Bring home something for your friends and family. You’ll find everything from arts and crafts to jewelry and clothing in Road Town.
• Dine. If you’d like to have a meal onshore, there are various options for every taste. Caribbean food, seafood, Italian, vegetarian, vegan, and kid-friendly cuisine are found throughout the island.
• Snorkel and scuba dive .

Horizon’s Base In Nanny Cay

Set in one of the most beautiful and most central locations in the  BVI , Horizon Yacht Charter’s BVI  Nanny Cay  Marina  base is located on the south side of Tortola, between the capital, Road Town and West End.

Nanny Cay Marina

A modern and naturally sheltered marina with berths for 180 yachts with high-speed fuel dock; 120/220V electricity; luxury shower facilities and restrooms; water and ice from Nanny Cay’s R/O plant; garbage disposal; 100% site-wide backup power.

Nanny Cay Hotel

The Nanny Cay hotel has a charming forty-room hotel nestled in a tropical oasis garden setting in the heart of Tortola’s favourite Nanny Cay Marina.

All hotel rooms feature air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, cable television, daily maid service and private balconies overlooking the picturesque marina or tropical gardens.

Kitchenettes and roll-away beds are available for a small supplement and infant cots available at no charge. Children stay free if under 12.

Swimming Pool

The swimming pool and sun lounger area at our Nanny Cay resort base have good breezes and great views over to Norman and Peter Island. The pool is open to Nanny Cay hotel, marina guests and Horizon customers from 10 am to 6 pm daily.

Showers and Restrooms

The main shower area and restrooms are located behind the Hotel foyer. Restrooms are also located at the Genaker Cafe and near the beach bar.

Freeman’s Laundromat is open for self-service and full-service laundry (Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5 pm; Saturday 8.30 am to 12 noon; closed Sunday). A same-day laundry service is available for laundry delivered before 9.30 am.

Genaker Café

The Genaker is an open-air cafe situated in the heart of Nanny Cay. It is open from 7 AM,, seven days a week, and serve sumptuous breakfasts until 11.30 AM, and lunch until 2 PM.

Peglegs at the Beach

Peglegs serves lunch from 11 AM and dinner from 5 PM. A range of local and International Cuisine right next to the Caribbean sea……….and the Beach Bar.

Open from 10 am 7 days a week and serving beer and mixed drinks – Happy Hour 4.30 – 6.30 pm with all beers $2 and $1 off mixed drinks.

The bar offers a select lunch menu including Tuna Wrap with Wasabi, Chef Slider Combos, salads, sandwiches, rotis and pizza. TGIF every Friday with free bar snacks!
