Inauguration of the new YCM building

At 43°44’15’’ N and 7°25’40’’ E, this hi-tech building which looks like a liner docked on Quai Louis II is home to two of the Principality’s historic clubs: the Société Nautique (rowing club) and the Yacht Club, a meeting point for owners and focus of international yachting activities. Alongside Lord Foster and Monegasque architect Alexandre Giraldi, Jacques Grange and Nelson Wilmotte have put their talents to the service of the new building’s interior and exterior layout and design.

“ Allow me to express a very sincere wish that the Yacht Club de Monaco fulfil its mission as a link between people who love the sea, that it serves the interests ”

— Prince Rainier III

To be a member of the Yacht Club de Monaco is above all a commitment. It is a desire to preserve a certain ethic, both on land and on the water, and to foster a respect for naval etiquette and preservation of the environment. The Yacht Club de Monaco’s philosophy is based on the need to perpetuate but also to pass on a heritage, inherited from our ancestors, to ensure that the Yacht Club remains a lively and progressive place.

Superyacht Chef Competition to bring together exceptional chefs

chef-competition

Nine contestants will take part in the competition on Thursday 4 April 2024.

The fifth edition of the Superyacht Chefs’ Competition is about to set sail. Organised by the Monaco Yacht Club in partnership with Bluewater, this major culinary event will celebrate the art of gastronomy at sea.

Under the watchful eye of Bernard d’Alessandri , Secretary General of the Monaco Yacht Club, and with the support of a host of industry professionals, this promises to be a thrilling edition.

Cookery classes in and around Monaco

Adaptability and creativity

Three-starred chef Glenn Viel, a fervent advocate of environmentally responsible cuisine, is heading up a prestigious international jury. He will be joined by famous names such as Marco Tognon, winner of the previous edition, and renowned chef Danny Davies, with over 25 years’ experience on board private yachts.

This year’s edition follows on from last year’s fabulous culinary event . Nine private yacht chefs will be competing: Paulo Ucha Longhi, Joelyanne Le Faucher, Mateusz Mitka, Margot Laurent, Enzo Di Gabro, Giacomo Seregni, Jérémie Gruson, Ava Faulkner and Melvin Costaglioli. Their creativity and adaptability will be put to the test during the competition.

The contest has all the right ingredients to ‘cook up’ a major event. The chefs will discover the secret ingredients of a mystery basket just before they start cooking. It won’t be ‘all plain sailing’ for the chefs, as the audience can decide to add an ingredient to the basket to throw them off balance.

Under the watchful eye of chef Duncan Biggs, they will also have to meet an anti-waste criterion, adding ‘a little spice’ to the competition. Spectators will also have a say, as they decide who deserves the best culinary presentation prize.

Beyond the competition itself, the Superyacht Chef Competition is part of the wider mission on the part of La Belle Classe Academy, Monaco Yacht Club’s training centre: to promote excellence in all aspects of yachting. So, get ready to be dazzled by extraordinary culinary creations at an event that guarantees a Mediterranean wave of flavours.

Sailing: at the Yacht Club de Monaco everything’s ready for the 40th Primo Cup

MONACO, March 08, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Some 90 teams to talling 400 sailors divided into J/70, Smeralda 888, Longtze Premier and Cape 31 have descended at the Yacht Club Monaco, with the Cape 31 class making its debut in its first one design championship. Everything’s ready for the 40th Primo Cup-Trophée UBS taking place in the Principality of Monaco this weekend.

Over the years, this regatta has left its mark, attracting big names in sailing and becoming renowned as a testbed for trying out new boats, kit and equipment, raising the Monegasque race area’s status to that of a laboratory of innovation. Launched in 1985 at the instigation of YCM President HSH Prince Albert II, the regatta has established itself as a major European one design gathering in the Mediterranean. The more than 30-year partnership with technical clothing supplier Slam, alongside UBS, and support from Monaco’s City Council, has contributed to its quality and prestige. The Primo Cup-Trophée UBS has often been the perfect opportunity to discover new classes like the SB 20, JOD 35 and the feisty Longtze Premier.

“As part of our ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting’ approach, the Primo Cup-Trophée UBS has embodied tradition and excellence in the one design world for four decades. Over the years we have had the pleasure of launching new classes, as well as innovations like the first dynamic buoy prototypes, equipped with an electric motor so they can be positioned remotely without anchorage, thereby protecting the seabed,” says YCM General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri. The event also coincides with the fourth and final Act of the Monaco Sports boat Winter Series of monthly regattas that run from November to March for J/70s, underlining YCM’s commitment to promoting year-round competitive sailing and giving sailors a training platform before international events. Field of experimentation and records.

At sea this Mediterranean classic has also seen new ideas trialled, notably in the 2000s a course with two leeward marks, different depending on the classes, designed to improve flow on the passage to the leeward buoy.

This year sees a preview of a new one design class on Friday, 8th March, an initiative of YCM member Ludovico Fassitelli, winner of the Primo Cup 2019. Conceived in Monaco, this one design aims to modernise the rules of competition, putting the emphasis on technology and accessibility. 40 years of passion The Primo Cup has been the scene of thrilling contests attracting big names in sailing like Jean Le Cam, Michel Desjoyeaux, Franck Cammas, John Kostecki, Grant Dalton, Enrico Chieffi, Flavio Favini, Marcus Hutchinson, Will Ryan and many others, making it an event not to be missed.

Among one design classes, the J/70 continues to leave its mark on the regatta’s history with nigh on 400 boats coming to Monaco over the last ten editions. This class is hugely popular with Monegasques where some 20 teams make up the largest fleet of J/70s in the Mediterranean. Other high profile classes include the Surprise which came to race 29 times, representing more than 700 boats in total. The J/24s also relished this even tracking up 27 years totalling over 450 boats. The 40th Primo Cup-Trophée UBS promises to be a memorable event for all contestants as it celebrates the regatta’s heritage while paving the way for another decade of competition on the Mediterranean.

Opening of Monaco Classic Week: The Principality honours its maritime heritage

Monaco Classic Week

A spectacle is guaranteed again in the Principality for the 16th Monaco Classic Week- La Belle Classe  in gathering of the finest pearls of classic yachting both sailing and motor.  Launched in 1994, this biennial meeting showcases the boats of yesteryear still sailing. 2023 sees the return of some magnificent schooners, the 15M IR yachts, motorboats like the classy Rivas, loyal regulars the clinker-built 12’ Dinghy class, and of course the always elegant motor-yachts of a bygone era.

By invitation only, more than 130 boats will be making their way into the Port Hercule today to moor in the YCM Marina, including some forty classic sailing yachts, a dozen period motor yachts, around sixty vintage motorboats and a 20-strong fleet of the clinker-built Dinghy 12’ class.

To kick things off,  Tuiga , the flagship of the Yacht Club de Monaco, will join the other two 15M IR yachts,  The Lady Anne  and  Mariska , for an inaugural regatta, while the Jury, chaired by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, will begin its inspection for the ‘La Belle Classe Restoration’ Prize. Its aim is to ensure that these boats will stand the test of time, faithful to the original design. This evening, the owners and their crews will meet the members of the Y.C.M. for an opening evening to share “The Art de Vivre la Mer”, the philosophy behind the event.

Schooners rewrite history

The world’s most beautiful sailing boats are coming, designed by the early America’s Cup architects like Nathanael G. Herreshoff to whom we owe several legends from the American classic scene like  Atlantic   (56.43m) and  Elena of London  (41.60m). Alongside will be the superb Charles Nicholson masterpiece,  the three-mast schooner  Creole  (58.22m) , showing off her elegant lines.

There’s a story behind each and every yacht, like the one which built the reputation of  O’Remington   (23.20m). Launched 1946 under the name  Maria del Mar,  the schooner was owned by Lord Remington, a wealthy American heir. Illustrious names like Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti and Marcello Mastroianni went on board and four Palmes d’or winners of the Cannes Film Festival stayed on her who would see the boat as a lucky charm for Italian cinema. At Maria Callas’s request, Lord Remington then headed for Athens where he met the famous Greek shipowner, Aristotle Onassis. During her time in Italy, the Diva rehearsed on board, an event engraved in the collective Italian memory reflected in the boat’s nickname “ La Divina” .

If the destiny for some is a fairy tale for others it took a less glamorous turn as for  Naema  (40.59m). This faithful replica of Alfred Mylne’s  Panda  left the Camper & Nicholson yard in 1938. Offered as a gift to King Bao Da of Anam (Vietnam) by the French government the boat found refuge in Toulon after the French withdrew from Indochina in 1954. Sold to the American Bill Bodle in 1979,  Panda  then left for the West Indies. In 1983, a fire on board almost destroyed her. She was rebuilt to the original plans in Turkey and is now called  Naema .

Prince Rainier III exhibition: review of outstanding yachts

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Prince Rainier III, who founded Yacht Club de Monaco in 1953, an exclusive exhibition during Monaco Classic Week shines a light on some of the beautiful boats owned by a man who loved the sea and boats. Entitled ‘The Prince and the Sea’, the retrospective is open to the public (from Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th September) looks back at 15 boats in Prince Rainier’s wonderful collection photographs who breathed new life into post-war yachting.

Highly symbolic

Synonymous with refinement and the pleasure of sailing, they were designed at the cutting edge of technology at the time, with meticulous attention to detail.  A dozen vintage motor yachts will be cruising in the bay of Monaco, beauties like  Thelas  built 1936 by De Vries Lentsch from the architect Norman Hart’s drawings. With a length of 18m  Thelas  won the first edition of the Pavillon d’Or in 1937, the inaugural race for cruisers. Requisitioned in 1944 by the British Admiralty, she took part in the Normandy landings and now belongs to Italian architect Corrado Lopresto, famous for having one of the most important classic car collections in the world. Today,  Thelas  is the official yacht for the CIM (Comité International de la Méditerranée). Founded in 1926 by a group of yachtsmen, CIM continues to pursue its founders’ objectives: to organise regattas at sea to promote and reinforce the identity of Mediterranean yachting.

The tradition continues with the presence of over 60 vintage motorboats

In the wake of the first motorboat meetings in 1904, some sixty motorboats will be brought together, including three dating from the early 20th century. Alongside them will be an exceptional fleet of around thirty Rivas, mahogany wooden runabouts of the 1950s, Mediterranean emblems, left their mark on a whole generation with their varnish and chrome. Carlo Riva, their brilliant creator, made no mistake when he set up his company’s headquarters in Monaco and obtained from Prince Rainier the right to dig an underground gallery, inside the very tunnel through which their ancestors were transported to the port from the station. He intended it for the maintenance and overwintering of these ‘Stradivarius’ of the sea, which are still a benchmark of beauty and excellence today.
