Alden Yachts For Sale

The Alden Yachts design firm was founded in 1909 by naval architect, John C. Alden, in Boston, Massachusetts at an exciting time when America was developing the transportation industry and infrastructure for trains, planes, automobiles, and more. The Industrial Age brought new wealth and leisure time for recreation and travel.

Learn More About Alden And Find Your Next Boat

Yacht Clubs in coastal towns held regattas, racing associations held offshore races, and racing yachts were developed, with winning yacht designers receiving yacht commissions and established business success. Fame and success came to Alden’s design firm after his Bermuda Race victories with his Malabar series of sailing yachts in 1923, 1926, and 1932, and continued long after his retirement to Florida in 1955. John Alden continued his love of sailing into his 70s on his Alden Sakomet One sailboat.

Designer Niels Helleberg, who emigrated to Boston from his native Finland in 1971, spent virtually his entire distinguished career that spanned four decades, as Chief Architect with John G. Alden Naval Architects Inc. When the Design firm was closed in 2008 after nearly 100 years in business, Niels Helleberg continued to work with the parent holding company that had bequeathed the Alden Design Collection to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Museum’s “Hart Nautical Collection,” directing the project.

Niels Helleberg who was committed to the preservation of John G Alden’s designs and legacy, was also instrumental in creating the “last schooner” John Alden drew in 1927, but never built, in the authentic style and philosophy of extreme simplicity as notated by the late designer. The “Wolfhound” project to build the 1927 design that began in 2012, was also a final schooner for Niels Helleberg who passed away in 2014. His superb design work and contributions to naval architecture, including many innovations and patents, are also preserved in the Alden archive at MIT.

Another notable designer with John G Alden Naval Architects Inc, was designer Bill Cook, responsible for the Alden 55 Center Cockpit in 2008, the final Alden Yacht. He is also credited with the Alden 72, Alden 54, Alden 52, Alden 50, Alden 46, Alden 45, and Alden 44 that are more modern cruising sailboats. Alden Yachts was initially known for the fast, seaworthy offshore schooners that brought attention to the firm, and then expanded to a wide range of exceptional sailing yachts, with a sprinkling of motor yachts in the portfolio. Most of the Alden powerboats were built during the 1950s decade. The Classic Alden Yachts available on the preowned yacht market are sought after for their seaworthy performance, and seakindly, bluewater capabilities.

Currently there are 24 preowned Alden sailing yachts and boats available on the USA yacht MLS, ranging in year from vintage 1912 to 1994. From vintage years 1907 to 1949, a 1912 25ft Alden Corinthian One-Design is listed at about $29,000 ranging in price to a 1938 62ft Alden Motor Sailer at about $2.6 million. From Classic years 1950 to 1979, a 1974 Alden Dolphin 47 is listed at about $76,000 ranging in price to a 1969 4ft Alden Caravelle Yawl at about $249,000. From 1980 to 2008, a 1980 19ft Alden Biddeford Pool One Design is listed at about $10,000 ranging in price to a 1984 Alden Palmer Johnson 78 at about $695,000.

Alden Single

alden powerboats for sale

The  Alden Ocean Shell Single   is the most popular recreational rowing shell in the world. It delivers satisfying speed and can be rowed by anyone, anywhere, anytime.

The exclusive hull design is the key. The flared bow lifts the boat over waves and the flat bottom provides stability and speed. The manageable length and hull weight make the Alden Ocean Shell Single  easy to transport so you can row where you want to. The dropped stern design eliminates the need for a skeg so it launches easily from a beach. The Alden Ocean Shell Single uses the Oarmaster drop in sculling system. Weighing only 18 lbs, this self-contained sliding seat unit can be inserted and removed in seconds.

Thousands of people row the Alden Ocean Shell Single. They race them at the Head of the Charles Regatta, they tour in them all over the U.S., as well as in far off locations such as the Island of Truk in the Indian Ocean and Bora Bora.

2006 1926 Alden Schooner This John Alden designed, Harvey Gammage built auxiliary gaff-rigged schooner is simply an amazing vessel... complete restoration done with style and knowledge. Pictures will speak for themselves. A true treasure. HALF MOON  is virtually a new boat.  It has a new cold molded hull which eliminates the risks and ongoing maintenance/cost issues associated with old wooden boats.   It has the unique distinction of being a new boat with state of the art electronics, navigation, systems and auxiliary, with a 1926 identity.John Alden had an alternate design for this production boat which was a Marconi rig. His specifications were used  when changing the main rig from gaff to Marconi. The present layout is a modified Alden layout for this design.  New ideas which were incorporated in to the design were the dual functioning doors in the head passageway area which allow for the ability to have a large shower/head area that flows from the port side to the starboard side.  In addition, the entire head area is clad in corian for easy cleaning and waterproofing.  Also, the butterfly hatch in the owners stateroom is removable and can be rotated so that it can function as an air scoop.  The forward hatch also functions in this manner.

1974 Fuji 35 Ketch

1974 Fuji 35 Ketch

Model 35 Ketch

1974 Fuji 35 Ketch This classic Fuji Ketch is located in southern Chile.  For those who have dreamed of sailing Patagonia, this is your chance!  Despite her age she is well maintained, well equipped, and ready to go! Of the design, here is an excerpt of a review from famed bluewater yacht designer Robert Perry:   By now the Fuji 35 is a very successful stock yacht. Upon her introduction I was quite surprised that there was a market for a yacht with very little of the current stock boat trappings. In fact, the Fuji 35 seemed a little anachronistic. It is, I'm sure, this feature that has brought her to the popularity she is now enjoying. The John G. Alden office has been known for years for producing fine performing yachts. The Fuji follows in this tradition. She is of a hull form that traces its model back to the well-known Alden schooners. Compared to most of the current production yachts, the Fuji is a bit narrow. I don't think it's narrow, I feel it's about right for good windward performance. While the Fuji won't point like an IOR racing yacht, she will move to weather well, to cruising boat standards. The sheer and other aesthetic treatments on the hull are done with impeccable taste, and the Fuji doesn't convey the "toy boat" image of some of the other character type designs. In fact, to call the Fuji a character yacht would be wrong. She is a traditional yacht. The beam on deck is generous. This makes for a very dry boat and has the bonus of affording large side decks and a huge cockpit area. The keel is long but cut away slightly forward to improve maneuverability. There is a slight drag angle to the keel also. This, I think, is also to improve maneuverability. There should be no question as to the Fuji's ability to track or steer herself. The large transom and the minimum overhang of the mizzen boom would be ideal for attaching a self-steering device. The displacement / length ratio of the Fuji 35 is 413. This indicates the Fuji is in the heavy displacement area. The Fuji is available in two rigs, the standard ketch and optional cutter. Aesthetically both rigs look great on the yacht, but my preference is for the ketch. It's true that you possibly could go to weather a little bit better with the cutter; however, I think the improvement would be negligible due to the hull form of the Fuji. The largest sail in the ketch rig is only 220 square feet. This would make the Fuji very easy to handle short handed. The ketch rig is very hard to beat for leisurely husband and wife sailing. While I don't care for the shape of most club jibs, they do cut down the activity during a tack. Very few people can go below a Fuji for the first time without some sort of pleasant exclamation. The woodwork is of a quality that is all but extinct and has to be one of the main selling points of the Fuji. Her builder is Fuji Yacht Builders, Japan. The molding details are the best I'v

1983 Mason Boats Mason 43 The design, commissioned by Pacific Asian Enterprises and built by Ta Shing in Taiwan, the Mason 43 has roots deep in the American tradition of offshore sailing yachts that reach back to John Alden, Philip Rhodes, and Olin Stevens. In fact, Al Mason worked for all three of the famous yacht designers. Though dated, the design remains one of the most popular offshore boats built in the last 35 years and is one of the best values for shorthanded long-range cruising on the used boat market today.   The Mason 43 is a phenomenal bluewater passage maker.  She is heavily constructed, has a full keel, high quality joinery and is purpose-built for offshore passage making.  The interior is well designed and the craftsmanship is well-executed.  She has great lines and will turn heads when you enter a harbor. It should be noted that the aft cabin of the 43 is one of the best aft cabins ever built. It is completely accessible to the saloon, has a full bulkhead at the head of both bunks, has a door that closes completely, its own hanging locker and ample cupboard space.  Bulletproof is the word most often used to describe the construction of the Mason 43, the specs on her fiberglass thickness is 1.12 at the way of the keel, between .5 and .61 at the turn of the bilge and her topsides come in at .375.  Geneva Marie has good bones but needs some work.   She is priced very aggressively.  This is a great deal for the right buyer. Contact John Johnson (JJ) at 210-408-1405.
