High & Low Tide Time Variations over the System The 'High' and 'Low' water times vary throughout the Broads because the tide takes time to fill from the sea and then drain back through the rivers. The Northern and Southern rivers also differ in the height range between low and high water and the speed of the flood and ebb currents. This is due to the fact that all of the northern rivers, (the Bure, Thurne & Ant) connect to the sea through a very narrow and constricted section of the Bure as it runs through Yarmouth. The southern rivers, (the Waveney & the Yare) however, are much wider and deeper and have less restriction. 'Fighting' the current on the Yare or Waveney can be a quite discouraging experience.

This Tide Calculator shows the actual height at key points on the system for the date and time displayed, together with the next predicted low and high tide at those points. It initially defaults to now (today, this instant), but you can change the date and time for a new prediction with the buttons provided.

The calculations (as with all Broads tide predictions), are reasonably accurate as regards high and low water times, but the amount of rise and fall is greatly affected by wind and rain conditions. If you are planning to pass under a low bridge, such as Potter Heigham through to Hickling, you cannot always presume that 'low water' will be any lower than 'high water' !!

If there has been high rainfall or if the winds in the North Sea are of any strength and from the North or North east, they tend to push the surface level of the North Sea down to the narrows of the Dover Straits and keep the sea level high at Great Yarmouth. This then has the unfortunate effect of preventing the ebb tide from exiting to the sea, resulting in no low water. Passage through Potter & Wroxham bridges, (for average height cruisers) is frequently blocked for days at a time, particularly in late summer/Autumn.

Therefore, if you planning a holiday cruise in advance to pass under these bridges, you are well advised to leave your plans flexible, and consult the Bridge Pilots nearer the day. (Their use at Potter Heigham is mandatory for hired craft anyway.)

The effect of Neaps & Springs Tide height ranges vary as a result of the gravitational pull on the Oceans by the moon and the sun. At fortnightly intervals, these act either in opposition, or together and have a significant effect on High and Low water levels.

The comparative low water height indicator shows graphically the variations in low water tide height at Gorleston Bar. The 'max', 'average' and 'min' values are based over a three year period of measurement. The figure shown is the actual variance in metres above 'chart datum'. This has no significance within the Broads waterways, but does reasonably reflect the comparative heights between successive low tides.

During 'Springs', (about 3 days after Full or New Moons), the sun and moon exert the most pull on the sea, and we experience both 'higher' high tides and 'lower' low tides than average. During 'Neaps' (around the half moon periods), the sun and moon's gravitational pull are no longer combined, and we then experience less extremes in either, ie the low tides aren't as low, and the high tides aren't as high.

This poses an interesting quandary when considering neaps and springs when planning ahead to pass under low bridges when you know things are tight and you haven't much clearance. During Low Tide Springs, the water level is at it's absolute lowest, so gives the best clearance for safe passage. The subsequent High Water level however, is higher than usual, so you will need to plan for your return approx. 12 hours later to coincide with the next low. If the passage is made however during a Neap period, then you may well have enough clearance at high or low water, as the variation between them will not be so great.

April 2024 Tide Table for Great Yarmouth (Britannia Pier)

The data and charts above provide the tide time predictions for Great Yarmouth (Britannia Pier) for April 2024, with extra details provided for today, Monday April 15, 2024.

What are Tides?

The tides are very long waves that move across our oceans, and they are caused by the gravitational pull from the moon and, to a lesser extent, the sun.

When the highest point of the wave (also known as a crest) reaches a coastline, the coast experiences what we call a high tide. At the lowest point (also known as a trough) reaches the coast, we experience a low tide.

Tidal forces of the moon in the open ocean will form as bulges of water that face the moon, but around land mass and coast lines, the water is able to spread out onto land, which creates the tides.

Earth's tides change based on the gravitational pull of the moon as it orbits us. The gravitational pull of the moon is strongest on whichever side of the Earth is facing it, annd gravity pulls the oceans towards the moon, resulting in a high tide.

On the opposite side of Earth, the bulge is caused by inertia. The water moving away from the moon is able to result the gravitational forces trying to pull it in the opposition direction because the gravitational pull is weaker on the far side of Earth. Inertia wins, and this caused the ocean to bulge out and create a high tide.

As the Earth spins, different locations on the planet will face the moon, and this rotation is what allows the tides to cycle around the planet.

Types of Tides

There are two types, or extremes, of the tide. These are called the spring tide (also known as the King tide) and the neap tide . These tide types occur twice every month.

When we experience a low tide, the Moon is facing the Earth at a right angle to the Sun. This means that the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun actually work against each other. We call these tides neap tides, and it's when the difference between high and low tide is at its lowest.

A neap tide happens between two spring tides, twice a month when the first and last quarter Moon appears.

Spring Tides

When we experience a high tide, the Earth, Moon, and Sun are in alignment, and this creats a strong gravitational pull. A spring tide is when the high and low tide difference is at it's most extreme, the highest and the lowest tides of the month.

Tide Predictions for Great Yarmouth (Britannia Pier)

Our tide prediction model for Great Yarmouth (Britannia Pier) uses harmonic constants and the nearest available coordinates along with the Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT) to define the chart datum.

Getting through Great Yarmouth means crossing Breydon Water which can be rough in high winds.

This means planning ahead and crossing at the right times at low water. Don't attempt to cross in fog.

You'll need to cross Breydon Water if you want to cruise between the northern rivers (Bure, Ant and Thurne) and the southern rivers (Yare, Chet and Waveney).

If in doubt whether it's safe to cross, call Broads Control on 01603 756056 or Great Yarmouth Yacht Station on 01493 842794.

  • Time your arrival in Great Yarmouth to coincide with the right tide - slack, low water or just after, which is approximately one hour after low water at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station. To find out when low or slack water is check the tide tables.
  • At slack, low water the current is weaker so it's easier to moor and there is more room under bridges. If you try to cross at high water you may not get under bridges and there is nowhere safe to wait for the tide to drop if you are on Breydon side.
  • It will take about 2¼ hours to get to Great Yarmouth from Acle and about 2 hours from Reedham or St Olaves.
  • Stay within posts - there is shallow water outside the posted channel.
  • Everyone should wear a life jacket, but especially when crossing Breydon Water.
  • Make sure your mobile phone is charged.

Ranger patrols on Breydon

Regular ranger patrols are made to coincide with high tide at Great Yarmouth Yacht Station during the summer and updates are passed regularly to the Yacht Station and Broads Control. If in doubt, check with Great Yarmouth Yacht Station 01493 842794. Passage should not be attempted in fog.

You'll find additional information from rangers in our Breydon navigation notes .

Breydon Water byelaws

WEATHER GREAT YARMOUTH

Water temperature great yarmouth.

At this moment the current water temperature in Great Yarmouth is - . The average water temperature in Great Yarmouth today is - .

The effects of Water Temperature

Fish are cold blooded, which means their metabolism is strongly influenced by the temperature of their surrounding environment. Fish want to stay comfortable. Consequently, even a small change or break will cause fish to move from one location to another.

In general, this behavior varies for each species and place, so we can not specify an ideal water temperature, however as a general rule we will try to avoid the temperatures abnormally cold in summer and too warm in winter. Remember, look for the comfort zones and you will find the fish.
