In 2010 ARD got his CS Yachtmaster License with the intention of one day fulfilling a dream that instantly ignites the imagination of almost anyone who has ever had their own hopes of setting out on epic adventures across the seas.

TIM will represent a constant voyage of hope and ocean-saving initiatives and will naturally join the fight to reduce global warming and plastic pollution. Especially in this day and age she will preach about the importance of strengthening the immune system by educating people about the powerful properties that have always existed in nature.

She will change the lives, for the good, of all she encounters, even if just to present an alternative, positive mind set to people from all walks of life, to remind them that all is not lost and that as we grow older, so too may we become just a little bit wiser and free’er than we were the day before.

ARD has spent the best part of a year restoring TIM back to her former glory with the aim of having her cruise ready to set sail and head east as soon as the early 2021. See his Facebook page to see the recent lockdown fundraisers performed on his roof, which have been streamed across the world.

Louw and Halvorson

Get ready to step back in time with this unique historical sailing vessel ….

The Howard Davis was designed by Kurt Oehlman and built by Louw and Halvorson as a purpose built naval training vessel in Iroko wood. She was designed with a large saloon with all round visibility to make it suitable for teaching a class of upcoming navigators.  Launched in 1965 at Quay 4 in the Victoria Basin. She spent the next 25 years based at Granger Bay in service with the Academy, during which time she was used for sail training and navigational exercises. In 1991 due to restructuring in the budget as well as the training syllabus of the Academy, she was sold into the private sector.

Repurposing Howard Davis

Prior to South Africa being placed under lockdown due to COVID-19, the owner of the classic 66ft Ketch Sailing Vessel, Howard Davis, delivered her to Yachtport SA for repair and maintenance assistance.

Howard Davis, a purpose built naval training vessel built in 1965 in Iroko wood has been given a new-lease on life and is being repurposed as a recreational vessel to be known in the future as Tim SV.

Since Tim’s arrival at Yachtport SA, the vessel has been receiving much needed attention.

Famous yacht visits Jersey

29 march 2010.

A replica of T B Davis’ 160-ft schooner, Westward, will be visiting St Helier Harbour in July.

Davis was a great Jersey philanthropist whose gifts to the Island included Howard Davis Farm, Howard Davis Hall (at Victoria College) and Howard Davis Park (where the flagstaff is one of Westward’s spinnaker booms).

Westward was one of the fastest and most famous of the big class racing yachts. Davis successfully raced her at Cowes against King George’s Britannia and other big class yachts between 1925 and 1935, berthing her by St Helier Yacht Club each winter. Sadly, 5 years after Davis died, Westward was scuttled in the Hurd Deep off Alderney.

The ship's replica, Eleonora, will visit St Helier for the first time on 21 July at the invitation of the Port of Jersey. Built at the Van der Graaf Shipyard in the Netherlands, Eleonora was launched on 31 March 2000, exactly 90 years to the day after Westward was launched at the famous Herreshoff yard at Rhode Island.

The replica was the vision of a Dutch entrepreneur and connoisseur of classic vessels. With the assistance of the Hart Nautical Collections of the MIT Museum, Eleonora’s designers and builders were able to pay close attention to the original Herreshoff drawings.

Eleonora has exactly the same lines as Westward and was constructed using the same materials. She will be visiting Jersey, subject to acceptable weather and tidal conditions, after competing in the Westward Cup, a week-long regatta in the Solent instigated by the ship's owner Zybnek Zak, to commemorate Westward’s centenary.

The Royal Yacht Squadron will be hosting an exhibition about Westward during the regatta and Jersey Heritage is currently in discussion with the world-famous yacht club about lending a number of items for this display.

Jersey Harbours’ Chief Executive and Harbourmaster, Capt Howard Le Cornu, said: "She is a beautiful yacht and it will be superb to see her gracing our waters."

Island boat-owners are being encouraged to gather off Noirmont to welcome Eleonora on the afternoon of 21 July when she arrives to take on a pilot and make her way into St Helier Harbour. Waiting at the harbour entrance to greet her will be the restored Howard D, Jersey’s first motorised lifeboat, which was presented to the Island by Davis in memory of his son who was killed in the First World War.

Although it will not be possible for Islanders to go on board Eleonora during her visit, she will be on view at the quayside on the Albert Pier on Thursday 22 July.

Morning service

One Sunday morning in the early 1880'S a young boy walked into St Luke's Church during morning service. There would have been nothing remarkable in this, but for the fact that the boy was thought to have been drowned at sea and mention was to have been made of this during the service. That boy was Tom Davis.

Thomas Benjamin Frederick Davis was born on 21 April 1867. He was the son of Thomas Leopold Davis, a ship's carpenter, and Jemima Davis (née Vickers). The family lived at Havre-des-Pas and as a boy Davis was in the choir of St Luke's Church, where one of his fellow choristers was Reginald Wingate, who was later to become Sirdar of the Sudan for nineteen years, a general and a Knight. The incumbent at the time of the 'Memorial Service' was Canon Philip R P Braithwaite, who was startled to see Davis in the congregation that Sunday morning. After the service he said to him "Tom, you did give me a surprise", which must have been a masterpiece of understatement.

Aground in the North Sea

After a modest education at St Luke's School at 2d a week, Davis went to sea at the age of fourteen years. It was in the month of November that his first ship, the Satellite , a three-masted brigantine of 245 tons, owned by R Allix and registered at Guernsey, encountered rough weather and ran aground in the North Sea on the Haisborough Sands off the coast of Norfolk. Davis answered the Captain's appeal for a volunteer to man the punt in an endeavour to save the ship's papers and the Captain's valuables, including his top hat.

The painter broke and Davis was cast adrift. He sculled out to sea and managed to keep his small craft from being swamped by bailing it out with the hat. Thirty-six hours later he was picked up half frozen by the Norwegian vessel Urda , whose crew of five knew no English, but kept on repeating the name 'Southampton'. It was, however, at Cowes that Davis eventually landed. As one writer observes, the next time Davis was to visit that mecca of yachtsmen was in 1923, when he went to race in Britannia as the guest of King George V. In passing, it is worth noting that the Satellite was refloated and made her way to Southampton, and it was from this source that the news came that Davis was believed to have been drowned.

Return home

Young Davis made his way to Southampton and presented himself to the Captain of the Channel Islands mailboat, who took him back to Jersey, where his return caused a sensation, for he was thought to have been lost at sea. He landed on a Sunday morning and made his way home, whence his joyful parents packed him off to church, as has already been recalled.

It was then back to sea for Davis. He served in sailing ships and three times went round the Horn. He sailed before the mast and rose to be a Captain. For a time he was in the RNVR and taught gunnery on The President . He then settled in South Africa, where he purchased a wharfinger business. He was a man of great ability, especially with regard to the handling of men, and the business prospered. Eventually he controlled most of the stevedoring services from Durban to Mombasa. Davis had now become a very rich man. Davis married Minnie Bagge and had seven children, three of whom died in infancy. The second son, Howard Leopold, died as the result of severe wounds received in the Battle of the Somme during World War 1.

King's friend

He had a great love of sailing and through this interest became a friend of King George V. He owned the magnificent J Class schooner-yacht Westward , in which he first raced in 1925, and on occasion beat the King sailing Britannia . With this fine vessel, which was to be seen at Rats Corner in St Helier's Harbour before World War II, he won a number of handsome trophies. On it was preserved the skiff from which he was rescued.

From 1937-1939 Davis was the Commodore of the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, to which he presented the Glenham Cup, which was named after his son, who now lives in South Africa. He also presented a trophy, the Howard Cup, to the St Helier Yacht Club.

Two facts of Davis's life have now been mentioned, his business acumen and the wealth which flowed from it and his interest in sailing. It is now time to turn to a third facet and the one for which he will be long remembered, both in the Republic of South Africa and the Island of Jersey, his many munificent benefactions.

In 1920 he presented to what was then the Union of South Africa the TS General Botha , a cruiser which had been formerly HMS Thames , which he laid down was to be used as a training ship for 200 cadets, half of whom were to be of English descent and half of Boer descent. The ship no longer exists, but the institution which Davis founded still continues as a shore establishment. Captain F B Renouf has written an interesting account of how he sailed the General Botha from England to South Africa.

To Durban he presented the Howard College, which was set up on 50 acres of land presented by the Corporation. The college, which was for the teaching of engineering in all its branches, was in 1931 to become part of the University of Natal. He gave to the college a portrait and statue of King George V. The latter was unveiled by Gen Jan Christiaan Smuts.

During World War II Davis gave £100,000 to establish a fund to promote recruiting in the Union by making provision for the dependants of servicemen killed in the War. In spite of having left Jersey for so many years, Davis never forgot his birthplace and many were the benefactions which he made to the Island. In 1928 he gave Parkfield, Trinity, with its 40 vergees of land, to the States for an experimental farm. The following year he obtained with the aid of E B Renouf, the well known solicitor, a Royal Charter for the establishment of the Howard Leopold Davis Scholarship Trust with a capital of £50,000 to assist local boys to enter some form of imperial service. The terms of the Charter have since been varied.

In 1935 Davis presented the Howard Davis Hall to Victoria College, in which to house the magnificent full-length portrait of the King which he also gave to the College. The portrait is by John St Helier Lander (1868-1944), a Jerseyman, and was exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1934. The artist painted identical pictures for Guernsey and Australia House, Canada House and New Zealand House, London, which were endowed by Davis. The foundation stone of the Hall was laid by Mrs Davis in 1934, and the Prince of Wales opened the building and unveiled the Portrait on 23 July 1935. On the same day Davis gave the Prince £50,000 for the Widows and Orphans Fund of the Company of Master Mariners. Two years later he gave the Howard D to be Jersey's lifeboat.

Howard Davis Park

Plaisance, the property of the Falle family, was for sale and Davis gave £25,000 to purchase it for the Island with a view to converting it into a park. The residence was demolished and the grounds landscaped by J A Colledge. The park was opened on 30 September 1939. Just within the main entrance stands the statue of King George V by Sir William Reid Dick, which was also commissioned by Davis. In the Memorial Hall close to the main entrance is a full-length painting of Howard Leopold Davis by Jessie Hilson.

So the story of Davis's benefactions continued £25,000 for the assistance of the families of Jersey's servicemen; Glenham Hall, which is situated at New St James's Place, and substantial donations to the Channel Islands Refugee Fund in the United Kingdom.

The benefaction, if one may so describe it, which was most characteristic of this generous man, was that which took the form of substantial cheques for the survivors of the Urda , the vessel which picked him up in the North Sea all those years ago. In 1936 he visited Oslo and other Norwegian ports in the Westward and did not leave Norway until he had traced, with the help of Prince Olaf, the two surviving members of Urda's crew and the dependants of the other three. The ship's carpenter who had actually lifted Davis aboard the Urda all those years before was one of the two still living.

The last benefaction was St. Luke's Hall, which Davis never saw completed. As he had remembered the men of the Urda, so he remembered one of the scenes of his youth, St Luke's Church.

T B Davis died at Durban on 27 September 1942. In accordance with his wishes the Westward , which had given him so much pleasure during life, was sunk in Hurd Deep after his death.

Davis was a man of strong personality who did not suffer fools gladly and always called a spade a spade. He was a man's man. But behind this somewhat sturdy exterior, there was concealed a great and generous heart. His benefactions speak for themselves and were dictated by his belief in King, Country and Empire, and, of course, his native Island of Jersey.

E. Howard Clock Company. Model No. 69-10. Eight-day Marine and Locomotive clocks. 218039.

E. Howard Clock Company. Model No. 69-10. Eight-day Marine and Locomotive clocks. 218039.

After the dissolution of the Howard & Davis Company in 1857, a catalog was printed in 1858 that respectfully announced the continuation of the business under the E. Howard & Co. name. This catalog stated that Howard & Co. was “now prepared to furnish to the Trade the well-known Clocks heretofore manufactured by H & D., as well as the Gold Standard Balances, and other fine work formerly made by them.” The new company promised promptness and guaranteed the quality of their goods. One of the new clocks they offered was the Marine and Locomotive Clock of the finest quality. The basis for this was from the lessons learned at the Boston Watch Company, of which Howard & Davis were involved. In February of 1877, the New York Office ordered 12 marine clocks. These were designed for use in locomotives, steamships, yachts, etc. In fact, for all places where a pendulum clock cannot be used on account of vibration. At that time, five case sizes were being offered in the catalog. All of which were constructed in brass and nickel plated. The smallest example was 6.25 inches in diameter and featured a 4.5-inch dial. The next size featured a case measuring 8 inches in diameter with a 6-inch dial. The middle size was 10 inches in diameter and was fitted with an 8-inch dial. A 12.5-inch diameter case with a 10-inch dial followed this. The largest example measured 15 inches in diameter and had a 12-inch dial. The movements in these clocks are of excellent quality and finely finished throughout. The escapements are jeweled, and they have adjustable chronometer balances.

This fine example was most likely made in the 1880’s. It features a polished nickel-plated case and is quite heavy. It measures 12 inches in diameter across the back and is 4.5 inches deep. The bezel is hinged, and locks closed with a key. It opens from the left, allowing one to access the dial. The dial is nickel-plated and measures approximately 9 & 5/8 inches in diameter across the time ring. This dial is engraved. The time ring features large Roman-style hour numerals. The five-minute markers are indicated with small stars inside the closed minute ring. A small subsidiary seconds dial is positioned above the center arbor. Above this is a small hole that provides access to adjust the speed or rate of the clock. The name in the upper section is the original owner of the clock. It reads, “THE C. & G. COOPER CO. / MOUNT VERNON, OHIO.” Below the center arbor is a hole to access the winding of the clock movement. Below is the trademark for the retailer. This information reads, “AMERICAN / STEAMGAUGE&VALVE / MANUFG.COMPANY / BOSTON, MASS. U.S.A.” Behind the dial is the movement. This movement is mounted to the case. The nickeled plates are finely finished. The front plate is die-stamped with the maker’s name, “E. Howard & Co. / BOSTON / 1613.” The screws retain their original blueing. This is a time-only example, and it is designed to run for eight days on a full wind. It is powered by a coil spring.

CHARLES AND ELIAS COOPER FOUNDED the C. & G. Cooper & Co. in 1833 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. It was originally a foundry and started manufacturing steam engines in 1836. Elias died in 1848, and Charles sold an interest in the firm to T. L. Clark. The business was reorganized as Cooper & Clark to reflect the change. In 1852, Charles’ younger brother joined the firm, and the name was changed to reflect the reorganization. By 1853, they had built their first wood-burning steam locomotive. It was then called C. & J. Cooper and to Cooper & Co. shortly after that. In 1869, Elias’ son, C. G. Cooper, and his son-in-law, Col. George Rogers, were made partners, and the name was again changed to C. & G. Cooper. They started manufacturing Stationary Steam Engines and Sawmills in 1847, Portable Steam Engines in 1860, and Traction Engines in 1875.

An 1874 directory lists their product line: “Steam engines, sawmills, general machinery.” It notes they had 200 employees.

In 1929, Cooper merged with the Bessemer Gas Engine Co. of Grove City, PA, to form the Cooper-Bessemer Co. and then Cooper Industries. In 1967, their headquarters were relocated to Houston, Texas. In 1989, they acquired the Cameron Iron Works of Houston. The corporation’s name continued as Cooper Industries, with the Cameron acquisition operating as the Cooper Oil Tools division. In 1995, Cooper Industries spun off its Petroleum & Industrial Equipment business. This included the Cooper-Bessemer and Cameron brands (among others) into a new company named the Cooper-Cameron Corporation. This has since been renamed Cameron International Corporation. Cameron sold its reciprocating compression business (which includes the Cooper-Bessemer product line, among others) to GE Oil & Gas, a division of General Electric, in 2014.

Edward Howard of Boston, Massachusetts.

The E. Howard & Company succeeded the Howard & Davis firm in 1857. The Howard & Davis firm was comprised of Edward Howard and David Porter Davis and was established in 1842 in Roxbury, Massachusetts. Both men had just completed their clock apprenticeship under the guidance of Aaron Willard Jr in Boston. The Howard & Davis firm made high-grade clocks, precision balances, sewing machines, fire engines, and watches. After the dissolution of Howard & Davis, Edward Howard became Boston's leading manufacturer of weight-driven residential and commercial clocks. The firm also made a large number of tower clocks and watchman and salve clock systems. These sold well in the last quarter of the 1800s.

It has been said that the E. Howard Clock company never made an inexpensive clock, and everything they made was of very good quality. As a result, Howard clocks have become very collectible and are prized by their owners. Today, the E. Howard name enjoys outstanding name recognition.

For a more in-depth reading of Edward Howard and his various businesses, please read "Willard's Patent Time Pieces," written by Paul Foley.
