MOONRAKER BOATS – A SPECIAL CHAPTER IN LOTUS HISTORY

22 march 2020 bendsandcurves comments 0 comment.

A few weeks ago a preview of the interview we had with John Berry was posted here. Because of current circumstances a lot of petrol heads are in self isolation. Or at least should be. Besides binging Netflix and YouTube, picking up a book is not such a bad idea. And why not broaden your horizon with … boats? “ Moonraker & JCL Marine Ltd – Colin Chapman’s Boat Industry ” by Sarah Jane Mogford (then O’Hara) is about the history of these boats and about the sports car and race car design genius’ marine side step in which John Berry played his part as MD and Marketing Manager.

who owns the moonraker yacht

This little boat company from Norfolk has been of great influence on the boat industry. Or, in Sarah’s own words: “The huge Sunseekers that you see in Monaco harbour and others that billionaires have were designed by those (and those taught or influenced by) who started off at Moonraker /JCL. The international motor yacht industry changed in both design and the way business and sales was managed because of Chapman.”

“ Despite the popularity and good sales of the Moonraker 36 the company had financial difficulties and John Berry persuaded Colin Chapman to buy the company, which he did in 1971. Lotus managers and engineers transformed the company and marketing infra-structure as well as making revolutionary changes in design and manufacturing. There was a great cross over of staff and technology between marine & automotive design and production. “ From Moonraker Boats website

Throughout its production life, the Moonraker was in constant development. There were at least six different series and two different builders.

History Throughout its production life, the Moonraker was in constant development. There were at least six different series and two different builders. From 1970 to 1972 the boat was built by Buxton Marine Services of Brundall trading as Moonraker Marine, from 1972 onwards by Moonraker Marine International a company set up by Lotus Cars founder Colin Chapman. Most Moonrakers were built within the first four years: by 1975 the then builders JCL were concentrating on the development of a new Range of Italian-styled motor cruisers (the Mirage, Mystere and Mamba). This proved to be a mistake. None of the futuristic new craft were to prove as popular as the Moonraker, and in 1980 the builders folded, a victim of the recession which gripped the industry at the time.

In 1972, when Le Quatre was built, buyers could choose from one of three different versions of the Moonraker the Sedan (aft cabin, open wheelhouse), the Cruiser (aft cockpit, open wheelhouse) or the Sports Yacht (enclosed wheelhouse/deck saloon, flybridge, aft cabin). The Sedan and the Cruiser were powered by twin Perkins 6.354 115hp six-cylinder diesels, the Sports Yacht by turbocharged T6.354s developing 175hp. The 175s were also available on the Sedan and the Cruiser in a higher-spec version called the Express most buyers opted for the extra power.

Le Quatre, unusually, carries the designation “900” on her superstructure. This was a short-lived idea where the flybridge models were badged 900, and the non-flybridge models 700. Otherwise, she appears to be the same model as the boat originally tested by MBY in 1973 , which carries the more widely used badge “350”, introduced in 1972 to denote the combined engine power.

Market report There is a relatively wide choice of Moonrakers for sale at prices between £40,000 and £50,000 a lot for a boat nearly 30 years old, reflecting its popularity. Although these are asking prices, a 1972 model fetched over £50,000 in a recent sale, so they are not too ambitious. You can find Moonrakers for £25,000, but at this price you should expect to have to do extensive renovation work.

The Moonraker Club There is now a Moonraker Owners’ Club, run by Morvyn Phillips, who owns the 1991-built 36 Darius. Formed in January 1997, the Club already has 57 members, not just in the UK but as far afield as Ireland and Norway. It publishes a newsletter and offers a growing programme of cruises. For further details call Morvyn on +44 (0)1235 831369.

who owns the moonraker yacht

Built at a world class shipyard, the Norship Ulstein shipyard in Norway certainly knows its business.

“Moonraker” was designed by notable architect Mulder Design from Netherlands, and Art-Line /Juan Carlos Espinosa – both of international fame and recognition.

Due to the popularity of this design, a total of 4 of these Norship yacht models were produced, also including “Sun Ark”, “Daloli” and “Impulsive”.

Ordered originally by Mr. John Stalupi of international yachting fame, “Moonraker” was built as a yacht first and then set out to achieve a world speed record for a superyacht. She was equipped with the engines she has now (MTU 16V396) with a gas turbine engine added (no longer on board). In June, 1992 she became with worlds fastest mega yacht with a speed of 66.7 knots . In 2004 another Mulder design motor yacht “World is Not Enough” (owned also by Mr. Stalupi) broke the “Moonraker” record by reaching a top speed of 67 knots.

It would be difficult to estmate the value of “Moonraker” in terms of her history and heritage as she is one of the most recognized yachts in the world. The internet is full of images of her unique profile and her story.

Clients for the charter business certainly attach a value to this intangible aspect of the yacht and for this reason, “Moonraker” enjoys a rather brisk charter demand.

“Moonraker” is very seriously for sale. Offers encouraged!

Superyacht Moonraker Sold by Moran Yacht & Ship

By Ben Roberts

Moran Yacht & Ship has announced the sale of the 49.9m (163' 9") Mangusta superyacht Moonraker , sparking a strong close to a successful year for the global brokerage firm.

Originally debuted for sale in the Palm Beach International Boat Show, Moonraker was sold within nine months of being on the market.

Built in 2014 by Italian shipyard Overmarine for an experienced yacht owner, the 49.9m Mangusta 165E open superyacht Moonraker boasts exterior designs by Stefano Righini, with the shipyard undertaking the naval architecture and interior designs in house.

Moonraker is the 8th Mangusta 165, but she is the first in the yard's new E series, which stands for Evolution. This, in a long line of sales for Moran Yacht & Ship , closes a successful year and reflects a continued trend for large yacht construction and brokerage activity.

Overmarine motor yacht Moonraker sold

The 49.9 metre Overmarine motor yacht Moonraker , listed for sale with  Moran Yacht & Ship , has been sold with Allied Marine introducing the buyer.

Built in GRP by Overmarine, Moonraker was delivered in 2014. With naval architecture by Overmarine, her exterior was designed by Stefano Righini .

Moonraker is the eighth hull in the Mangusta 165 series and was commissioned by her owner to replace his previous yacht of the same name. Moonraker is different to the previous Mangusta 165s as she boasts seemingly endless main deck windows, where other yachts in the series have signature teardrop windows. Her flybridge was also restyled with built-in furniture to create a better flow.

The interior of Moonraker was also penned by the yard, but deviates from the form of her sister ships. Inside, the entertainment area on the main deck is brightly lit thanks to the huge side windows and skylights above the dining table.

Entertainment is a key focus on Moonraker, with a cinema room on the lower deck featuring a 65-inch TV and secret candy drawers for the most authentic of movie theatre experiences. The room is furnished with a deep wall-to-wall plush sofa and two large leather armchairs.

This yacht can accommodate 10 guests in four cabins, all located in her lower deck, with crew accommodation aft. The full-beam master suite has a broad bathroom amidships. The three en-suite guest cabins have queen size beds and an extra cabin can be created in the cinema room.

Elsewhere on the lower deck, Moonraker has a state-of-the-art gym with a hammam, steam shower and en-suite facilities.

Moonraker was asking $22,900,000.

Endorsements | keeping up with the bezoses: mark zuckerberg buys a super yacht, reports say, a report says that zuckerberg’s luxurious new $300 million vessel was originally was commissioned by a russian oligarch who was the target of sanctions imposed after that country’s invasion of ukraine.

who owns the moonraker yacht

Given that Mark Zuckerberg enjoys a respectable 16th place on a list of the world’s richest people, he probably figured it was time for him to acquire one of the ultimate status symbols for the mega-wealthy — a super yacht.

A new report from The Sun said that Zuckerberg is now the proud owner of a $300 million vessel that he has christened “Launchpad.” The 387-foot-long vessel, which comes with a helipad and a $30 million companion boat, was seen docked this week at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with its unique chrome finish reflecting in the sun.

This purchase shows, among other things, that the Facebook and Meta founder and CEO has branched out from buying islands and building an underground complex to help him survive the apocalypse. Perhaps, he wants to cruise the Mediterranean this summer and be among the moguls who can play host to Leonardo DiCaprio.

The yacht definitely grants him admission to the watery playgrounds of such multibillionaires as Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison, Bill Gates and any of the Russian oligarchs who haven’t been the target of sanctions imposed by the United States or its allies over Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

In fact, Zuckerberg reportedly came by Launchpad due to the misfortunes of one of those oligarchs. The yacht originally was commissioned to be built by Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia’s richest men who is on multiple sanctions list, according to a report by Autoevolution.com , a transportation industry site. The yacht was known as Project 1010, and the shipbuilder in the Netherlands was legally barred from delivering it to Potanin when it was completed in 2022, though Autoevolution also said that Potanin was not the yacht’s actual owner.

The Sun reported that the yacht recently received “special permission” to be imported. It has since arrived in the United States, a couple months ahead of Zuckerberg’s 40th birthday on May 14 — which raises the question of whether he meant Launchpad as a birthday gift to himself.

It’s quite a gift: Launchpad can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard. It also requires a crew of 48 and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com . But shelling out $30 million for maintenance a year shouldn’t be a problem for Zuckerberg, who reportedly earns between $6 million and $12 million a day, The Sun said.

But as spectacular as Launchpad sounds, super yacht fans might say it’s not as spectacular as Jeff Bezos’s super yacht, Koru. The $500 million sailing vessel features very tall masts, a swimming pool, a helipad and room for a second, smaller yacht. The most noteworthy thing about Koru is that Bezos commissioned a special sculpture to decorate its prow. It’s a “curvaceous winged goddess” that is said to bear a striking resemblance to his fiancee Lauren Sanchez.

The Amazon founder, his wife-to-be and the goddess figurehead spent much of last summer sailing around the Mediterranean, cruising from Spain to Croatia and hosting such famous guests as Katy Perry, Orlando Bloom and Usher. The couple also threw a lavish engagement party off the coast of Positano on Italy’s Amalfi coast, attended by another pack of famous friends, including Kris Jenner, Wendi Murdoch and, yes, Leonardo DiCaprio.
