New York real estate billionaire's $40M mega yacht anchored off Sanibel Island

A New York real estate billionaire's sleek mega yacht, the Silver Shalis, was spotted cruising Fort Myers Beach and anchored off Sanibel Island over the holiday weekend.

Built in 2010 by Delta Marine from a ship design by Langan Associates and interior by design house Jonathan Quinn Barnett, the 175-foot, 846-ton craft is owned by real estate tycoon Larry Silverstein.

The vessel, which can sleep 12 guests in six cabins and has a crew of 14 housed in seven cabins, has an annual running cost between between $2 million and $4 million.

The luxury mega yacht, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, is valued by specialty yachting web sites at a whopping $40 million.

A  yacht tracking website placed the Silver Shalis just off the Sanibel Causeway near the Sanibel Lighthouse   on the east end of the island on Monday and early Tuesday. The vessel has been cruising the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic, visiting Fort Lauderdale at one port of call.

Sometimes, when not pressed into service, boats such as the Silver Shalis are rented out for charters. Such excursions cost from $200,000 to $400,000, or more, a week, according to yachtcharterfleet.com.

Silverstein, 90, CEO of Silverstein Properties in New York, has a net worth of $3 billion, also according to superyachtfan.com .

Dara McQuillan, media contact for Silverstein Properties, confirmed the yacht was the CEO's.

"He is visiting the southwest coast of Florida, and loves it there," she said.

A lot has been written about Silverstein.

A 2017 article in the Baltimore Business Journal said his company bought the World Trade Center weeks before the 9/11 terrorist attacks destroyed the twin towers. The company rebuilt the complex that includes the Freedom Tower.

The company's most recent acquisition was a lower Manhattan apartment tower. Silverstein Properties purchased at 116 John St., a converted office tower in the Financial District, for $248 million, according to a company statement.

And on Jan. 10, Silverstein Capital Partners — Silverstein Properties’ real estate lending platform — closed on a $2 billion fund committed by its two existing and three new global institutional investors.

About The Silver Shalis

  • Powered by twin diesel engines, she comfortably cruises at 12 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 14 knots.
  • Silver Shalis is built with a aluminum hull and composite superstructure, with teak decks.
  • Capable of transoceanic crossings, with a maximum speed of 18.5 knots.
  • Lightweight aluminum hull and composite superstructure seamlessly joined in a striking exterior design.
  • Built to Lloyds Register Class, one of her head-turning features is a sleek hull of exquisite cerulean blue, the result of a multistep painting process and cast against an off-white superstructure with shimmering metallic silver details.
  • Inside décor complements the art collection on display throughout her many living and entertainment spaces. ]
  • On the interior, her decks are served by a silent, glass-enclosed cylindrical elevator with an oil-rubbed bronze metal finish.
  • A central staircase wraps around the elevator, featuring curved marble wall panels—a remarkable accomplishment, as all panels run vertically in a sequential vein-matched arrangement throughout the length of the stair tower.
  • The upper deck features an indoor/outdoor dining option for ten via a distinctive curved glass door that opens a full 180 degrees.
  • Among many features is an extensively outfitted gym on the sun deck with panoramic views of the outside and a lap pool. Source:  https://www.deltamarine.com/ , https://www.yachtcharterfleet.com/

Watch: Silver Yachts Relaunch 85.3m Superyacht BOLD

By George Bains

85.3m explorer superyacht BOLD, launched by Australian shipyard Silver Yachts in 2019 to international acclaim, returned home for maintenance works earlier this year. The Espen Øino-designed superyacht was relaunched in June 2021, and Silver Yachts has shared a video of her return to the water.

Returning to the Perth-based shipyard was a natural choice for Bold , with the superyacht touring South East Asia and the South Pacific before making her way back to Australia. The Captain and Owner entrusted Bold’s maintenance period to the hard-working teams at Silver Yachts , who originally brought this innovative superyacht to the waters in 2019.

"After sailing over 52.000 nautical miles since launch in 2019, M/Y Bold stopped off back home at Silver Yachts in Western Australia,"  says Sander Toonen, Chief Operating Officer of Silver Yachts.  "In the two months she spent at the yard she was hauled out for 5 weeks for maintenance and service works. After seatrials, she headed straight from Perth to the Mediterranean, ready to charter another season."

In a recent interview with Superyachts.com , former Silver Yachts naval architect Nick Stark spoke of the Australian shipyard’s specialisation in aluminium builds and its history of cutting-edge projects, of which Bold  has been the flagship.

The 85.3m and 1504 GT superyacht offers a jaw-dropping variety of indulgent social spaces for her guests. Perhaps one of the most unique features is the superyacht’s Wintergarden, with a table for 18 guests. The Wintergarden is surrounded by a glass panel system which can be fully opened to offer al fresco dining. The Wintergarden is accessed via an expansive Loft Saloon, which boasts floor-to-ceiling windows and the combined area spans 300-square-metres.

Her large exterior deck space includes a bar and teppanyaki with ample seating, while a 400m2 of multipurpose teak main deck carries an enticing arsenal of water toys and tenders.

Currently in construction at Silver Yachts is hull 6, Silver Loft II, based on the successful platform of BOLD. We look forward to following the progress of yet another outstanding superyacht to be built by the Western Australian shipyard.

"After sailing over 52.000 nautical miles since launch in 2019, M/Y Bold stopped off back home at Silver Yachts in Western Australia." Sander Toonen, Chief Operating Officer of Silver Yachts

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

who owns silver yachts

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

Who Owns Superyachts In 2023 —And What Does That Mean For You As Crew?

Where once oligarchs, oil tycoons, royals and old money ruled the roost in the yachting world, tech billionaires have increasingly dominated the superyacht market. Who are these people — and more importantly — what does their different style of ‘yachting’ mean for you as crew?

who owns silver yachts

The list of tech billionaires (at least, the list we know of) is long and getting longer by the year. And as their wealth grows, so does the size of the boats they own!

Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison (Musashi), Charles Simonyi (SKAT), Sergey Brin (Dragonfly), and Larry Page (Senses) are just some of the tech billionaires known to own a superyacht. Mark Zuckerberg, meanwhile, is rumoured to own Andromeda.

While we can only speculate on how these exact individuals use their yachts or what they are like onboard, some general traits might set the tech billionaire yacht owner out as using their yachts differently than generations of yacht owners before them.

Overall, tech billionaires are often younger, more adventurous and less hidebound regarding old rules and service styles. Here are a few general trends we can assume.

They want to eat well, but less fussily, and with a greater premium on health.

who owns silver yachts

Where silver service, ultra-decadent meals, and mountains of wasted food were — and often still are— preferred by old-money yacht owners and charterers, the modern tech billionaire is more likely to be health-conscious and eat food that is plated rather than buffet style or silver service. Yacht chefs now need to be more skilled in special diets, such as plant-based or keto, and offer a broader range of cuisines.

They want to WORK.

Superyachts used to be for holidays only. This was partly by necessity —the lack of connectivity meant that work went on the back burner for summer months as guests swanned around the Mediterranean. Now, the extraordinary technological strides on board allow yacht owners to have offices where they can work anywhere in the world.

They want to go far beyond the milk run.

who owns silver yachts

While anchoring off St Tropez or Cap Ferrat for weeks in August will always be in style, there has been an explosion in remote cruising, often fuelled by this younger, more adventurous set of yacht owners who can work from anywhere- Antarctica to Alaska and beyond.

This has fed into the next point…

A desire for adventure and exploration has changed yacht design.

As younger, more adventurous owners like tech billionaires have joined the superyacht market, the design of yachts and the toys they carry have changed markedly. New types of vessels have been created to meet this desire for off-the-beaten-track cruising, from support yachts to water toys to the massive growth in explorer yachts. Gone are the days when one yacht layout was almost identical to another. Now, we have winter gardens, submarines, ice rooms, ski rooms, large onboard offices, and helicopter hangars.

Not all of these changes have been driven by tech billionaires, granted. Still, their vision of what is possible has dramatically changed what yachts look like and how they operate as machines, with new types of propulsion, greater ranges, and a considerable amount more tech onboard.

Some things never change.

One thing hasn’t changed, though—a wealthy person’s desire for privacy. Discretion remains perhaps the most essential trait in any crew member, which you must keep in mind when working on yachts —even in the day of constant social media and shows like Below Deck.

A wealthy person’s desire for privacy and discretion is a constant that crew forget at their peril. Are you ensuring that you are a trusted asset? You may have signed that NDA, but do you let stories slip now and then at the bar? Are you careful about not taking photos onboard that give away anything about the boat or the owners? Do you make sure you don’t share the yacht’s cruising plans?

In a world where stories about tech billionaires will fly around the globe at light speed, you must be the gatekeeper. Stories cannot leave the passerelle.

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

who owns silver yachts

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.
