Mirage® Adventure Island Description

An absolute joy on the water, the Hobie Mirage Adventure Island is an impressively approachable trimaran sailing kayak. A roller-furling, vertically battened mainsail provides lift, a retractable centerboard prevents lateral slip, and the larger amas tuck parallel against the rotomolded polyethylene hull for docking. Multiple hatches, on-deck stowage and Vantage CT Seating encourage multi-day adventures, and the MirageDrive 180 with ALL-NEW Kick-Up Fin Technology offers paddle-free locomotion when the wind scatters, making it easy to get home. The "AI" is an exceptional bluewater-capable fishing platform. Equip the accessory trampoline kit for walk-around stability. Flexible too; use it with just a single ama or leave the sail at home to pedal or paddle.

Hobie Adventure Island 2021

The Adventure Island is a one person Trimaran kayak that is designed for sailing but can equally be pedalled or even paddled!

Unfurl the 6.04 m² / 65 ft² surface area sail from the 5.03 m / 16' 6" tall carbon composite mast and ride the wind with ease! The Adventure Island features fold-out AMAs for lateral stability and a drop-down daggerboard to prevent lateral slipping, making the "AI" a very capable sailing craft that is easy to use! You can pick up some serious speed and have some great fun with this kayak. Turning the AI is made easy via the stern rudder, which is controlled by a handle positioned adjacent to the seating position. The main sail can also be controlled, unfurled and reefed all from the seat too. The AI makes a great sailing craft for coastal waters and large inland waters. For enhanced performance 'Off-the-Wind', add a Adventure Island Spinnaker and the AI will come alive!

When the wind drops the fun can still continue. Simply reef in the sail and use the Mirage Drive to pedal the craft, so that you can continue your adventure or head back to shore! If you fancy a day paddling then leave the AMAs at home and take the main hull out on the water - at 16ft 7in length it paddles quite well!

Comfort is ensured for long days on the water by the fully adjutsable Vantage CT seat, which features Boa Lumbar Support. The AI features the Mirage Drive 180 full power pedal drive in forwards... and reverse! Switching between forwards and reverse is as simple and easy as pulling a toggle on the drive system. The drive system features 'Glide Technology' with roller bearings found on the major pivoting components of the drive, for a smoother and easier pedalling experience. The Mirage Drive 180 comes equipped with the new ST Turbo Kick Up Fins. Kick Up fins offer worry-free pedalling - should you strike an object with the fins they simply kick up out of harms way to help reduce the risk of damage.

The Adventure Island is a very capable kayak for fishing in both inshore and offshore waters, and comes with two moulded-in rod holders and the Lowrance-Ready system. The Lowrance ready system makes fish finder installation easy using a large transducer scupper under the kayak and a system of deck seals for waterproof cable routing.

Storage space is plentiful and loading up for a multi-day expedition, weekend camp or days fishing is no problem. The large bow hatch will swallow plenty of gear for storage in-hull. Two 8 inch Twist-Lock hatches feature at the stern and just forwards of the seat allowing for easy access to the hull for storage. A generous rear tankwell will also take plenty of gear or a storage crate for when you need to load up with gear. Mesh-pockets feature in the cockpit to store the small items you want to keep within easy reach. For loads of extra deck space, add the Adventure Island Trampoline Kit across the AKAs!

When it comes to docking or storing your AI, the AMAs fold in against the hull at the push of a button. An AI can be transported on a strong and quality roof rack, but custom built trailers are also available to make life easier.

If you want a versitile craft for sailing, pedalling and maybe a bit of paddling, that is easy to use and will provide endless fun, then the Adventure Island from Hobie will fit the bill!

Hobie Adventure Island

$ 8,190.00

The Hobie Adventure Island is equal parts kayak, outrigger and trimaran sailing craft.

Hobie Adventure Island Mirage Trimaran Pedal Sailing Kayak

Hobie Adventure Island

The Adventure Island is the perfect fit for those looking for a highly versatile and capable vessel that can be used in various waterways and conditions – especially in situations where speed and the ability to cover longer distances is paramount.

Whether you’re just looking for something to get out on the water for thrills, ambitious expeditions, fishing endeavors or all of the above it’s hard to go wrong with the Hobie Adventure Island (AI). The AI is an incredibly versatile boat that is fun and easy to use in a variety of waters and conditions – the consummate solo crew sailing kayak perfect for everything from relaxing or thrilling day trips on lakes, bays or open ocean to overnight camping trips, multi-day expeditions and a myriad of fishing pursuits.

Because the AI is also equipped with a MirageDrive pedal-powered propulsion system it can also be pedaled around with surprising efficiency, which is a nice back up in case the wind drops off. The AI is also supplied with a paddle, although you won’t be needing it often. In it’s full glory the AI is a trimaran sailing vessel that is surprisingly capable given it’s size.

With a sail area size of around 5.4 square metres and a mast of around 4.6 metres in length, the AI is capable of generating rather respectable speeds. Thanks to the amas (otherwise known as pontoons) the AI is also incredibly stable, which is a confidence inspiring feature for novices and advanced users alike. Featuring a simple-to-operate roller-furler operation of the sail is simple enough to use without the threat of a head-concussing boom swinging precariously in strong winds.

As a sailboat it is easy enough to manage and can be transported via car-top or trailer and is quick and easy to rig. As a kayak it’s fast and efficient and as an outrigger it’s simply one of the best fishing platforms on offer. If you can see yourself using the AI in all of these configurations, we’re confident in recommending it to you.

The AI can be stripped of its sail, amas and akas to convert it to a kayak and this is one of the reasons the AI is so versatile. If there’s not enough wind to go sailing you can always use it as a kayak. It pedals well, paddles well, is fast and efficient through the water and equally at home on rivers as it is open ocean.

But wait… there’s more. The AI can also be rigged as a Polynesian style outrigger. By rigging one of the amas the boat becomes an outrigger style craft that is supremely stable making it a fantastic option for fishing in scenarios where stability is valued. By adding a tramp (fitted between the akas) some 12 square foot of usable deck space is added, offering even further utility that comes in handy for all sorts of things. Ideal for touring and overnight camping trips, it’s also an excellent for kayak fishing.

A few months ago, I found out about the Triak. Triak Sports is a Trimaran Sailing Kayak. Already sounds cool right? It is sailing and kayaking to the extreme! It’s designed for easy use, easy transporting, and just fun. The Mainsail and Spinnaker with snuffer make it feel like a sailboat, but it also gives you the freedom to paddle like a kayak.

Description

Now obsolete with hobie, this is the last single seat hobie mirage adventure island in our stock.

An absolute joy on the water, the Hobie Mirage Adventure Island is an impressively approachable trimaran sailing kayak.

The Hobie Mirage Adventure Island is based on the tried and tested design of the Adventure kayak but with two outriggers added. It has a fast, sleek hull and excellent stability, making it a very popular choice for covering long distances. It’s great to paddle and pedal, but really comes into its own when sailed.

With the sail, the Adventure Island features a boomless, roller-furling sail rig with 5.34 square metres of sail area, which provides excellent performance that is completely manageable from the cockpit with the pull of a line. The sail will reduce in size to suit all abilities and wind strengths up to a force 4. Two retractable amas or outriggers can fold up against the side of the boat with the simple pull of a line for easy transport, docking and manoeuvrability.

The Hobie Adventure Island has been designed with ease of use in mind. Well placed lifting handles make this kayak simple to car-top. On arrival you can just wheel it into the water, fix the outriggers with pop-on arm, drop the rudder, unfurl the sail and off you go.

Powered by MirageDrive 180

The Hobie Mirage  180  with its turbo fins gives you hands-free propulsion in both forward and reverse. The twin underwater turbo flippers propel you with surprising speed. The new  MirageDrive  features Hobie's  MD180  shifting technology to go from forward to reverse in a second

John Harley - Founder of Fishing Online

John Harley - Founder of Fishing Online

Fishing Online is owned and operated by a kayak bass fishing enthusiast, yours truly! I’ve always loved the adventure of the water and the mystery of what lurked beneath. Let’s be honest, it doesn’t get much better than floating in a kayak watching the sunrise over the glassy water, followed by the strike of a monster bass that just took my bait! As the serene thrill of fishing brought me back to the water more and more, I quickly noticed a problem. I couldn’t just go to one retailer to get high-quality, reliable kayak fishing supplies and had to place orders with multiple different companies to get what I needed. The hassle and inconveniences were enough to put anyone overboard, and I knew I couldn’t be the only angler out there that had this problem… it turns out, I wasn’t! So, in true John Harley fashion, instead of waiting around for someone to make a solution, I took a leap of faith and created the solution myself! A love for kayak bass fishing + a universal problem that plagued most anglers = Fishing Online! Yes, that’s how it all started! As a software engineer, I never planned on owning an online retail store, but this is where my passion led. I can also say that opening a brick and mortar store was never part of the plan either; however, sharing the love of this sport with so many provided us with the opportunity of opening our doors in March 2018 to our physical storefront. I don’t consider Fishing Online a retail store; it’s my passion that transformed into a worldwide community of anglers bonded together by the love of fishing.

Here at Fishing Online, you will experience the hospitalities of a small family-owned and operated business, but that’s not all! You’ll experience a staff that is assembled of experienced fishermen that have expert knowledge and share the same love for fishing that you do! The staff that you see on our website and Facebook page, the ones writing our articles and blogs, and the voices you hear on the phone will be the same faces you will see when you come into our storefront! No large business hierarchy here; we’re real fishermen, just like you, sharing the same passion. Did you know that we stock 99% of our items in our warehouse that is attached to our storefront? This allows us to provide you with the fastest shipping possible! You’ll even receive FREE shipping on orders over $50*, and your orders ship the same day if submitted by 2:00 PM EST.

Whether you're scrolling through our online store or walking through our storefront, you can choose from a wide array of premium products and options that suit your fishing needs! We personally understand that purchasing high-quality fishing products online can be a daunting task, and that’s exactly why we are ready! We are here to assist anglers, of all experience levels, with any questions that you may have. Our team is dedicated to exceeding your service expectations and ensuring that your transactions are as smooth as possible. Delivering excellent customer service and quality products is just what we do! We'd love to hear from you, so feel free to give us a call at (844) 5-FISHON , or you can reach out to us at [email protected] , for anything that you may need!

What Is a Trimaran?

trimaran sailing kayak

A trimaran is a multi hulled sailboat with three individual hulls; the main hull ( vaka ) and a pair of outrigger hulls ( amas ). These smaller outrigger hulls are attached to the main hull using beams.

While trimarans have a rich history dating back nearly four millennia, these types of sailboats have only gained popularity in the late 1900s and early 2000s.

Trimarans are primarily used as personal boats for sailing enthusiasts or racing. These sailboats draw their versatility from their lightweight design, making them faster and easier to handle at sea when compared to single-hulled boats (monohulls). Additionally, the three hulls also contribute to better stability, making it very hard to capsize (although more likely than a cat according to this study)

Trimarans come in various sizes, and some can be as small as 19 feet (5.8 meters) in length, while others go up to 60 feet (18meters). They’re also used for different purposes. Most trimarans are used for racing and recreational purposes, although some units are still used as ferries.

As with all things, to find out which is the best we need to understand what it will be used for. There is a big difference in requirements between a boat used for day sailing compared to offshore around the world sailing.

The list below highlights the best trimarans for different purposes.

Best Trimarans For Cruising, Liveaboard and Sailing Around The World

The Neel 43 is a French trimaran best suited for cruising. Its key features include:

  • Easy maneuverability on the open sea by only a small number of crew members

This unit is also built for comfort, ideal for more extended travels. This 43-feet (13-meter) trimaran is also made with recyclable and bio-sourced materials, highlighting the manufacturer’s commitment to environmental consciousness.

This trimaran has a base price of  €329,000 excluding VAT. This translates to approximately $370,138.

2.Neel 47 Possibly The Best

Named the best full-size multihull for 2020, the Neel 47 is a strong contender for one of the best trimarans in the market. This 47-foot (14.3-meter) long trimaran features optimized exterior and interior ergonomics for a unique design and look.

Still on design, the Neel 47 is ideal for couples looking to take a weekend off or spend some time as liveaboard. It has a spacious owner’s cabin and two bedrooms. It also features a spacious living room and kitchen and is optimized to ensure comfort for a couple.

The Neel 47 also has two basic guest cabins so your friends or children can tag along on your sailing adventure. Accordingly, this unit is ideal for those looking to explore the sea for the sheer joy of sailing.

The Neel 47 comes at a 571,139 euro ( $643,600 ) price tag, excluding VAT.

3. Rapido 60 The Fast and Comfortable Circumnavigator

The Rapido 60 offers a blend of performance, safety, and luxury, making it one of the best options for bluewater sailing. Measuring 59.3 feet (18 meters) in length, the Rapido 60 is an imposing unit. It’s made from lightweight sandwiches and carbon materials that provide speed and strength, allowing it to stand up to strong ocean currents.

The Rapido 60 also has spacious living spaces and is built for comfort at all points of the sail. Its design also optimizes safety. While it’s an ideal option for circumnavigating, it’s also an excellent choice for racing due to its speed.

This is also the same boat that The Youtube channel La Vagabond just purchased.

The Rapido 60 retails at $1,400,000 .

4. Rapido 40

The Rapido 40 measures 39.4 feet (12 meters) in length and is ideal for cruising around the world. The Rapido 40 features twin “C” foils, which provide added lift, enhancing its speed and performance whether you are sailing downwind or upwind.

Because it has C foils, this trimaran doesn’t have a central daggerboard, increasing interior space. Accordingly, it’s an excellent option for couples looking to cruise and enjoy great performances .

The Rapido 40 is made from high-tech all-carbon materials for a lightweight yet sturdy design. This material is also used for the countertops and furniture, and the cork flooring adds a touch of style.

This trimaran retails for $595,000 , making it a cheaper option than the Rapido 60.

5. Dragonfly 40

The Dragonfly 40 measures 40 feet (12 meters) in length. It features high-comfort standards, making it one of the best trimarans in the market for taking your family for a cruise. Because of its larger size, it has a better capacity, being capable of accommodating six to eight people, so you can bring your family and friends along.

It’s easy to navigate and extremely safe. With a maximum speed of 24 knots (44.5 km/h), this trimaran also provides fast speeds to make your cruise even more exhilarating.

The Dragonfly 40 retails from €509,000 exclusive of VAT, which rounds up to $572,000 .

6. Dragonfly 32

The Dragonfly 32 is a high-performance cruiser. Like the Dragonfly 28, this unit features a contemporary design for racing. This trimaran can accommodate five to seven crew members.

Although slightly longer than the Dragonfly 28 with its 32-foot (9.8-meter) length, the Dragonfly 32 has a max speed of 23+ knots (42.6+ km/h), making it one of the fastest trimarans for racing. This unit also has comfortable accommodation, which makes it an ideal option for a weekend cruise with family and friends.

The Dragonfly 32 has a base price of $350,000 .

7. Corsair 37

Thanks to a variable draft with a retractable rudder, the Corsair 37 is an ideal choice for shallow water exploration. This 37-foot (11.3-meter) long trimaran features advanced foam-cored construction designed for safety, making it virtually unsinkable.

The carbon hulls minimize weight, this makes for a lightweight ocean exploration sailboat with blistering speeds. One of its selling points is that this trimaran has previously been used for Arctic expeditions, possibly marking it as one of the better options for circumnavigation and offshore sailing in the northern waters.

This trimaran has a base price of $189,000 but can go up to $204,125 .

Best Trimarans For Day/Weekend Sailing

8. dragonfly 28.

The Dragonfly 28 is a 28-feet (8.75-meter) long sailboat that can accommodate up to five people. It comes in two versions:

  • Touring version: This version is ideal for families.
  • Performance version: This is built to provide optimal performance for the sports enthusiast within you.

It clocks a maximum speed of 22+ knots (22+ km/h) and is beam-folded. It’s an excellent option if you want a high-performance, comfortable yet smaller unit for your day or weekend cruise.

The Dragonfly 28 starts at  €188,280 inclusive of VAT, which comes to around $211,600.

9. Dragonfly 25

Like other trimarans under the Dragonfly brand, this 25-foot (7.62-meter) trimaran is great for both racing and short term cruising. However, this high-performance boat delivers easy handling, making it perfect for couples looking to take a ride out over the weekend and seasoned sailors looking for an exhilarating racing adventure.

The Touring version features a lightweight build and offers comfort and accommodation to keep you, and the few guests you can fit, comfortable during the ride. This trimaran also has a Sport version, which is optimized for racing.

The Dragonfly 25 retails from EUR 86,800 .

10. Pulse 600

The Pulse 600 trimaran is a compact sailboat. It’s made from lightweight, carbon-reinforced construction and vacuum-formed materials for optimal speed. This trimaran is an ideal option if you are looking for speed.

It also features ample deck space, greater stability, and volume than most trimarans of similar size and build.

This trimaran measures 19.8 feet (6 meters) in length and can be sailed single-handedly by one person with minimal effort. The Pulse 600 has a base price of $38,800 , which places it in the lower price range.

The F-22 is one of the smaller trimarans in the market. Developed in New Zealand, the F-22 is a folding trimaran built for speed. The hulls are made from narrow fiberglass tied together using fiberglass beams and aluminum, minimizing bulk while optimizing speed.

The F-22 is roomy and is not as pricey as other models in the market. This trimaran has two main versions:

12. 2019 Weta Trimaran

The 2019 Weta trimaran is a 14.5-foot (4.4-meter) trimaran featuring a carbon frame, centerboard, rudder foil, and rudder shock. The hull is made from fiberglass and foam. The Weta is built for strength and speed based on these lightweight materials.

The 2019 Weta trimaran is easy to sail and is worth considering whether you want to take a quiet sail, race with your friends, or take kids to a sailing lesson. It has a simple design and is easy to set up independently. Thanks to its collapsible design, this trimaran is easily stored away with minimal space demands.

13. WindRider 17

The 17.4-foot (5.3-meter) WindRider 17 is one of the more versatile trimarans in the market. It packs high performance for a low cost. This trimaran has a light rotating mast to boost performance, and a full-battened mainsail optimizes visibility.

This sailboat is made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is more durable than fiberglass and demands less maintenance.

The WindRider 17 has a comfortable interior and can fit six adults. This is an ideal choice for social sailing for a couple or a family and friends. It’s easy to ride, and a shallow draft allows easy maneuverability.

14. Astus 22.5

If you’re looking for something small but still comfortable, this 22.5-foot trimaran is for you. Built for speed and maneuverability, the Astus 22.5 has optional foils to optimize speed. The modern design, coupled with the spacious interior, can fit up to four beds. Accordingly, this trimaran is suited for family outings.

This trimaran also has a foldable design, collapsing to only 16 feet (4.9 meters) for easy storage.

15. Multi 23 Trimaran

The Multi 23 trimaran has a contemporary design, featuring a vinyl ester and PVC foam core construction. The section below the waterline is made of solid glass for a sturdy base.

The beams are made of lightweight carbon, and the trimaran features a 33-foot (10-meter) aluminum rotating wing mast for optimal harnessing of the wind. While ideal for weekend excursions with family, once rigged with the asymmetrical spinnaker will get your heart pumping.

This trimaran packs high performance at a lower cost than most other options in the market. It’s a good choice if you are looking for a high-performing unit without spending an arm and a leg.

16. Challenger Class Trimaran

The Challenger Trimaran 15 is the best choice for persons with disabilities. It’s designed to provide disabled sailors an opportunity to explore their passion for sailing without worrying about aspects like safety or operation.

A man named Geoff Hold circumnavigated the British Isles in 2007, becoming the first disabled person to achieve this feat. He had quadriplegia.

Living up to its name, the Challenger can withstand harsh weather conditions while blending performance with speed.

Final Thoughts

Admittedly, no trimaran is best for everyone. But whether you are looking to race with your friends, take your loved ones or friends for a cruise over the weekend, or circumnavigate the ocean, you can rest assured that these lightweight trimarans will deliver speed, safety, and comfort to make it worth your while.

These brands are innovatively designed and feature intricate safety mechanisms that make them virtually unsinkable. Give them a shot and begin your ocean adventure.

All non-racing Farrier designs use a minimum wind capsize speed of 30 knots or more to ensure safety for all those aboard. Add the roomy cabin and high speed capabilities to the equation and you’ve got a boat that is great fun for everyone.

"Kayak style" sailing trimarans

This "sailing kayak" concept has several major disadvantages.

When you drive a car your passenger sits next to you, not behind you. It's more sociable that way and makes it easier to talk. Compare it to riding pillion on a motorbike which means all you really see is someones head, not the view. Often the passenger sits in front of helmsman, not only does that block his view but also it is the passenger who gets hit by spray, it's hard to duck out of the way when sitting in a fixed position. It is usually the passenger who is the reluctant sailor - very off putting, even for me, to be hit in the face by cold water! Again check the owners comments about how dry the Strike 16 and 18 are to sail.

And that is another thing I don't like. I find it nice to walk round the boat, and with a bad back I cannot sit still for hours. Sitting in the hull gives you a great impression of speed, because you are so close to the water (but its also very wet, as I just said). Sitting high on the trampoline feels like flying and you get a good view of approaching waves and wind gusts.

But boats are not just for sailing! You also have to get on and off it. That may well mean coming into a dock or pontoon. Doing this on a small trimaran is tricky at the best of times, because you cannot get to the outrigger bow to fend off or jump ashore. So, on a boat where you are trapped in the central hull, you will have to be very skilled to avoid bumping the dock especially if you come alongside under sail..

It's not much better if you have an engine, for it will be very difficult to start and control when you are sitting facing forwards and the engine is behind you.

Many of those boats are steered with your feet. One argument for that approach is that you have both hands free to drink or smoke. That doesn't stop anyone I know from doing that when driving a car! and has never stopped me when holding a tiller.

My hands are much more sensitive than my feet. People don't usually play a piano or paint with their feet! Furthermore the more joints/wires between rudder and tiller the more friction and slackness. So the steering feels heavy and sloppy. Check out the video below for what it should be like to steer a small trimaran.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOYhtdFwTpU

Boats like this are not necessarily any faster. The video on the Strike 18 page

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4iFXdFuihw

shows us overtaking (rather easily!) a Windrider 17 in our Strike 18. Both boats had two people on board and as you can see we were not using our screecher.

Useful Information

Wear your lifejacket.

Never leave shore without wearing your appropriately sized, Canadian-approved PFD and other essential life-saving gear

Take a lesson

Good instruction keeps you safe and sets a solid foundation as you progress into the more dynamic disciplines of the sport. A lesson may also be the difference between a good experience and a great one

Start out in a lake

The water is calmer, there are fewer obstacles and depending on the time of year, it's often warmer if you take an unexpected plunge into the water

Check the tides & weather

The wind is calmest in the mornings and evenings; ocean paddlers should aim to return as the tide is coming in

Bring snacks and water

Pack your treats in a dry bag

Find partners

If you are paddling on the ocean, never go alone

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

trimaran sailing kayak

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

trimaran sailing kayak

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

trimaran sailing kayak

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

trimaran sailing kayak

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

trimaran sailing kayak

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

trimaran sailing kayak

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

trimaran sailing kayak

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
