An East Coast-style adventure made easy

Superyacht East Coast, a marine destination development firm based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Fore Points Marina, a premiere marine facility in Portland, Maine, have announced a partnership to showcase their connected coastline as a “must-visit” yachting destination.

With diverse and thriving cultures, a world-renowned food scene, and fascinating maritime history, the connected coastline has long enticed cruisers to its shores. Rugged and wild, the region teems with exciting wildlife, stunning natural landscapes, and picturesque towns and villages.

“The character of our people and places change dramatically from port to port,” said Adam Langley, president and founder of Superyacht East Coast. “Each unique region presents its own magic, its own experiences, its own allure while never far away from modern services and amenities.”

Working together, Superyacht East Coast and Fore Points Marina aim to provide captains with confidence in building an East Coast itinerary supported by infrastructure, marine services, and guest experiences, according to Vanessa Pike, general manager of Fore Points Marina.

The marina boasts a new facility capable of accommodating yachts up to 630 feet and offers a full range of the latest amenities. “It’s the perfect launching off point for your East Coast adventure,” Pike said.

’Unimaginable excess’: Bid to attract showy superyachts to Cape Breton under scrutiny

Destination Cape Breton has hired Superyacht East Coast, based in Halifax, to attract to the island those who own boats like Archimedes, a 68-metre superyacht believed to be worth about $100 million

Not so long ago, the largest community in Cape Breton was best known as home to one of the most toxic waste sites in North America: the infamous Sydney tar ponds.

Containing one million tonnes of oozing sewage and industrial sludge — left behind after centuries of steelmaking — the site has since been capped with concrete and transformed into a sprawling urban park that opened 10 years ago.

“It’s a transformation from what was an industrial economy to one that is more service-based with tech businesses and education, ” says Terry Smith, CEO of Destination Cape Breton, the island’s tourism marketing organization.

With memories of the tar ponds receding, the port city is now trying to cultivate an upscale vibe — one that includes appealing to billionaires and their toys. It wants to become a destination for superyachts, the most expensive, luxurious boats in the world, which have become the ultimate status symbol for A-list celebrities, dot-com titans and lesser-known oligarchs.

Destination Cape Breton has hired Superyacht East Coast, based in Halifax, to attract to the island those who own boats like Archimedes, a 68-metre superyacht believed to be worth about $100 million. According to Superyachts.com, the vessel — as long as a 20-storey building is tall — has a marble Jacuzzi, a grand piano, an enclosed gym, a wood-burning fireplace and six staterooms.

Compared to some superyachts, which boast helicopter hangars and glass elevators, Archimedes is considered an understated boat.

Owned by U.S. hedge fund billionaire James Simons, the vessel spent at least a week last summer in Cape Breton, moored at the community wharf in Baddeck, N.S., where it caused quite a stir among the locals.

“The larger yachts are the ones that people tend to gravitate to,” said Adam Langley, president and CEO of Superyacht East Coast. “They come alongside, and suddenly there’s hundreds of people around buying ice cream or lunch and taking in the environment that these boats create.”

And the economic benefits don’t end there, Langley said. The owners of these floating mansions typically spend a small fortune on provisions after they arrive in port.

Once Archimedes had completed its eight-week tour of Canada’s East Coast, the captain told Saltscapes magazine that its owner had spent US$400,000 on fuel, groceries, tours, guides and entertainment.

“Think of them as large, floating resorts,” Langley said in a recent interview. “They’ll spend thousands of dollars on things like flowers.”

But Tom Urbaniak says there needs to be a broader discussion about using public funds to attract superyachts to the East Coast.

They'll spend thousands of dollars on things like flowers

“What this is really about is marketing to an infinitesimally small group of oligarchs, the uber-rich, hyper-celebrities and the people who swoon around them,” said Urbaniak, professor of political science and director of the Tompkins Institute at Cape Breton University in Sydney.

“This is not just a celebration of wealth. This is a celebration of almost unimaginable excess.”

The professor says that at a time when Canadians are being asked to make sacrifices to deal with climate change, it doesn’t make sense to cater to rich people who flaunt their wealth in vessels that leave a massive carbon footprint.

“I haven’t seen anything from Destination Cape Breton that there will be some kind of standard set to determine which ones get welcomed based on whether they pay taxes …. and whether they subscribe to the rule of law,” Urbaniak said.

Smith says attracting superyachts is a small part of a broader strategy aimed at getting more boaters to come to the region. And he challenged the argument that superyacht owners represent the worst kind of polluters.

“I don’t agree with that,” said Smith, whose non-profit organization gets most of its budget from a levy charged to those who pay for accommodations in Cape Breton, as well the provincial and federal governments. “There are electric superyachts now. I think we’re going to see a transformation in them in terms of cleaner fuels and cleaner ways of operating.”

As for courting oligarchs, Langley says they’re not coming to Atlantic Canada anyway.

“We see more explorer yachts that are not the huge, 600- and 400-foot superyachts,” he said, adding that superyacht builders are now keen on using hydrogen technology to propel their boats.

“These are usually 200 feet and less, and they’re usually owned by people who are very sensitive to where they are going and operated by captains who are respectful (of the environment).”

Meanwhile, Langley says he’s working on a marine tourism strategy for Nova Scotia that will include sections on sustainability and best practices for marinas and waterfronts.

“I am very sensitive to that,” he said. “I grew up in Nova Scotia along the Northumberland Strait and I’m lucky enough to have a place in Baddeck …. These places are very special.”

Top 10 Superyacht Marinas in the United States

Best marinas to dock your boat..

Marine, marina, harbor, yacht club, port — not exactly synonyms, but close. A marina provides safe dockage for vessels of all sizes, often offering supplies, repair, and other facilities to those who rent a slip. A quick (but unreliable) Google search told us that there at about 12,000 marinas in the United States.

Whether that’s true or not, that’s a lot to sift through. But we did it — we found the top 10 superyacht marinas in the U.S.

SYDNEY — Is it Sidney Crosby? Sylvester Stallone? Beyonce and Jay-Z? Paul McCartney? One of the Kardashians?

When a superyacht docks or drops anchor in Cape Breton, there are people who ask one question: Who’s onboard?

Well, it turns out that shoreside scuttlebutt translates into economic activity as people flock to the waterfront for a closer look and a bit of gossip. That’s why Destination Cape Breton is partnering with Superyacht East Coast to attract more of the luxury vessels (which are classified as at least 80 feet or 24 metres long) to the island.

‘SUPERYACHTS SELL ICE CREAM'

“One of the things we really see when a superyacht comes to the destination is they're a magnet,” said Terry Smith, executive director of Destination Cape Breton.

“Whether they're parked in Louisbourg harbour, in Sydney harbour, wherever it may be, it draws people to those waterfronts to take a look at the ship and maybe they're thinking they're going to find a celebrity, but overall, for us, it gives a sense of vibrancy in our destination. These yachts have decided with everywhere there is to go in the world that they think Cape Breton Island is a place to come and spend some time.”

Or, as Superyacht East Coast founder Adam Langley likes to say “superyachts sell ice cream.” It’s one of the many phrases he’s coined since starting the business, which markets all of Atlantic Canada as a premier yachting destination and play a larger role in an estimated $35-billion industry.

“The tentacles of this thing are so far stretching and what people need to understand is it's a pretty boat and it's neat, it's fun to talk about who might be on it, but the economic impact is what we really need to be focused on and building the infrastructure that supports their visit so that it supports all visitors,” said Langley, who previously worked for Waterfront Development and Develop Nova Scotia.

“And they actually add to the animation of the waterfront, big boats and little boats. Then people come by land and they buy ice cream and they have dinner and they stay in town — a waterfront full of boats ends up being a waterfront full of people.”

Then there’s the money spent by the superyacht’s owners, guests and crew.

The U.S. Superyacht Association estimates a 180-foot vessel generates $4.75 million per year, a figure that includes crew salaries, maintenance and repairs, fuel and dockage.

So far the partnership between Destination Cape Breton and Superyacht East Coast is literally paying dividends.

When a superyacht docks in an area, there’s usually a huge economic windfall for a wide range of businesses and service providers. Using Baddeck as an example, Langley said there were 10 superyacht visits this summer compared to three last year and just one in 2019 before the pandemic. He credits attending international boat shows, a network of captains and owners and a strong social media presence with the increased interest in Cape Breton.

“In the absence of marketing, you’re not going to have those type of growth numbers,” said Langley.

SPENT $10,000 ON FLOWERS

While they’re still in the early stages of compiling the data, Smith said there’s ample anecdotal evidence.

“I heard one story where one yacht docked and needed to refresh their cut flowers and ordered $10,000 worth of cut flowers,” said Smith. “So there are things like that on top of the activities that the owners or guests take in and the spending they do — just the provisions for the yacht can be very impactful.”

Last year, Langley worked with a vessel called Archimedes. By enriching their itinerary and suggesting various locations and arranging activities, the ship extended its stay and ended up eight weeks in Atlantic Canada, including one week in the Bras d’Or Lake. The Archimedes captain later calculated that they had spent US$400,000 during that time.

This summer, he took the crew of Blue Moon to the Co-op in Baddeck just to reprovision their own food and it took an hour and a half to go through the checkout.

“We’re not playing around here. This is big business. And it does so much for our rural ports because a lot of these boats want to explore and they’re designed to go great distances. I call them floating debit cards and whatever port provides them access to the land, they basically plug in and start spending money,” said Langley, who noted that the superyacht visits pay for infrastructure at local docks and marinas that benefits all boaters.

“We’re developing marine tourism for all boats — superyachts are just an identifiable market and a market of opportunities. If you build to the standard a superyacht would expect you’re satisfying all users.”

Smith agreed. “When we look at superyachts, we look at them as just one piece of a larger marine tourism opportunity. There are things that we specifically do to attract superyachts but in improving the experience for them, we’re really making the experience better for all boaters and what’s appealing to them is appealing to all boaters as well.”

The 16 Best East Coast Beaches in the U.S.

Set your sights on these beautiful stretches of shoreline from Maine to Florida.

With nearly 30,000 miles of coastline, there’s plenty of soft sand, blue water, and seaside fun to choose from—whether you prefer the waterfront amusements of the Jersey Shore, mixing it up with well-heeled vacationers in the Hamptons , or the serenity of Assateague Island. Here, the best East Coast beaches in the U.S.

Mansion Beach: Block Island, Rhode Island

20220818 scotch beach block island, new shoreham ri beach access looking west at late afternoon sun while departing the beach

Mansion Beach, accessible via a dirt road in Block Island, provides visitors with the perfect mix of relaxation and excitement for the whole family,” says Caroline Quinn, travel expert at Black Tomato . When soaking up the sun, bodyboarding in the waves, and combing for shells along the uncrowded shoreline, the peaceful ambiance is such a delightful contrast to other East Coast tourist darlings that draw huge summer crowds.

Georgica Beach: East Hampton, New York

view of beach

Abutting the Georgica Association—one of the most exclusive and expensive communities in the world—beautiful Georgica Beach makes the singularly rough drive out to the Hamptons well worth it.

This particularly splendid stretch of East Hampton is where city transplants and owners of summer homes nearby come to catch rays, go for a refreshing dip, and plan Instagram-worthy beach picnics.

Sconset Beach: Nantucket, Massachusetts

first glow of the morning sunrise at the beach

One of the loveliest and most easy-to-access beaches on Nantucket, Sconset Beach, on the easter tip of the island, sits within walking distance of Greydon House in the utterly charming, old-school town of Sciasonsett. Backed by dunes, it’s a popular—and photogenic—spot for swimming, surfing, and fishing.

Goosewing Beach: Little Compton, Rhode Island

silky water rocky sunset seascape with lighthouse

On the South Shore of Rhode Island lies Goosewing Beach, a haven of soft sand that offers a sanctuary for relaxation, renewal, and outdoor recreation.

“It’s located within a stunning nature reserve that’s one of the state’s most popular outdoor destinations for visitors looking for adventure, hiking trails, and beautiful wildlife,” explains Quinn. Pro tip: It's located less than 15 minutes away from the beautiful Sakonnet Lighthouse, so plan to make a trip to both spots while you're in the area.

Gooch’s Beach: Kennebunkport, Maine

me kennebunk gooch's beach

“Set along the scenic coastline of Kennebunkport, Gooch's Beach is a cherished gem of New England with timeless charm,” says Quinn.

Ideal for beachgoers of all ages, it’s as pretty as a postcard with velvety sand for leisurely barefoot strolls and building castles, beginner-friendly waves for surfing and swimming, and gorgeous sunset views.

Corolla Beach: Outer Banks, North Carolina

side view of horse standing on field against sky, corolla, north carolina, united states, usa

The Outer Banks are a favorite of outdoor enthusiasts. For many thrill-seekers, the 4x4 drive to Corolla Beach is a trip-making highlight in and of itself.

“Once there, visitors can spot wild horses roaming freely along the tranquil shoreline and even embark on a kayak safari for a closer look,” reveals Quinn.

Newcomb Hollow Beach: Cape Cod, Massachusetts

cape cod newcomb hollow beach

Quinn calls dune-backed Newcomb Hollow Beach “one of Cape Cod’s hidden gems.” After a day swimming in the water and sunning on the golden sand at the northernmost oceanside beach in Wellfleet, stick around to catch the prettiest sunset on the hook-shaped peninsula.

Assateague Beach: Assateague Island, Maryland

assateague wild ponies on the beach

A bastion of serenity, Assateague Beach is hidden away on Assateague Island, a sleepy 37-mile-long barrier island and protected nature sanctuary. Far removed from the mainland crowds, wild horses roam and the waves of the Atlantic Ocean lap the near-empty shoreline where your footprints might be the only ones etched into the sand.

Cape May Beach: Cape May, New Jersey

cape may beach ave

Cape May is a long-time favorite Jersey Shore town. One of its biggest draw cards? The wide sandy beach runs parallel to the boardwalk and extends for miles. In the summer, it’s packed (though, not unpleasantly so) with families sharing snacks and cool drinks under umbrellas, playing frisbee, and frolicking in the water.

Aquinnah Beach: Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

gay head light and aquinnah cliffs at martha's vineyard

With its dramatic multi-colored clay cliffs, golden sands, and crystal-clear waters, Aquinnah Beach provides a stunning backdrop for a day of fun in the sun. Its timeless charm and unparalleled beauty make the half-mile stretch of coastline ideal for travelers looking to experience the true essence of Martha’s Vineyard.

Good Harbor Beach: Gloucester, Massachusetts

good harbor beach

Favored both by locals and travelers alike, Good Harbor Beach draws visitors into a world of natural splendor with its pristine sands and sparkling water. Quinn also touts the fact that it’s just steps away from Ravenswood Park, a peaceful 600-acre nature reserve.

South Beach: Miami Beach, Florida

miami south beach sunrise

The sizzling strip of shore that gave rise to an entire vacation destination, palm-fringed Miami Beach brings the heat with its year-round sunshine, golden sand, turquoise water, and colorful lifeguard houses. Umbrellas and loungers from various hotels line the beach—and it’s got some of the best people watching around.

Race Point Beach: Provincetown, Massachusetts

According to Quinn, Race Point Beach stands out due to the miles of gorgeous steep dunes with hikes, cliffs, and wildlife, and breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean.

“Visitors can easily unwind and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of this quintessential Cape Cod destination,” she adds.

Sandbridge Beach: Virginia Beach, Virginia

sandbridge beach in virginia beach, virginia with grass on dunes

Unlike some of the more touristy seaside spots in Virginia Beach, Sandbridge Beach’s relatively secluded location keeps the vibe much calmer.

“The coastal marshes and maritime forests allow visitors to spot the local flora and fauna—including shorebirds, dolphins, and loggerhead sea turtles, as well as gulls, terns, and sandpipers—with ease,” says Quinn.

Crane Beach: Ipswich, Massachusetts

view of crane beach

One of New England's most cherished destinations for summertime family fun, Crane Beach supplies far more than just sun and sand. Tucked within a 1,234-acre conservation and recreation area, the four-mile-long beach is ensconced by dunes, pine forests, and the Atlantic Ocean, so it’s a great spot to explore picturesque scenery.

East Beach (Bald Head Island, North Carolina)

aerial view of sun over atlantic ocean and shoreline of bald head island, north carolina

Bald Head Island is one of North Carolina’s best-kept secrets. Love water sports? East Beach boasts spectacular waves, making it the perfect spot for active travelers to try surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, boogie boarding, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Greek authorities seize 3.75 million capsules of contraband nerve pain drug pregabalin

ATHENS, Greece — Greek authorities said Saturday they seized more than three tons of the prescription nerve pain drug pregabalin and impounded a yacht registered in the United Kingdom.

The operation took place Thursday night at the port of Lavrio, 70 kilometers (43 miles) southeast of Athens, the coast guard said.

On the yacht, the coast guard found 3.75 million capsules of Nervigesic, a brand name used by Indian pharmaceuticals firm HAB Pharma for pregabalin. The capsules were packaged in 500 cardboard boxes weighing nearly 3.15 tons, the statement said.

Pregabalin is used to treat nerve pain caused by a variety of conditions, such as diabetes and shingles, and also to treat a type of seizure called partial seizure because it has its origin at a single location in the brain.

The raid was ordered based on information from Greece’s “National Intelligence Agency about the activity of networks of Egyptian nationals in Greek territory,” the statement said.

The yacht and its contents remain at the Lavrio port while local authorities conduct an investigation, the coast guard said.
