Our Mission:

Our mission is to continue the wonderful tradition of model sailboats, especially wooden model sailboats, that really sail. Our boats have provided thousands of hours of happy outdoors experiences for countless adults and youngsters. We hear back from owners almost every day about how much they enjoy their boats and how pleased they are that we are doing what we do. In their small way, model sailing boats make the world a better place for all of us.

Our Origin:

Will Lesh is the founder, designer, and owner of Tippecanoe Boats. Will grew up with a classic Jacrim Seaworthy model sailing yacht which he sailed for many summers on Lake Tippecanoe along with his sister who also had a beautiful Keystone pond yacht.

“It has been in memory of those many happy hours that I have brought these beautiful toy sailboats back to life, and of course we have added a terrific collection of sensational RC model sailboats as well which make splendid projects for craftsmen as well as for first time builders and sailors.” – Will Lesh, Founder and Designer

“I have a 100 ton license. I built my own 24 foot sailboat and sailed it across the Atlantic. I own a 34 foot cruising sloop, a laser, two MC Scows, a Hobie 14, a windsurfer, a 420, my 24 foot trans-Atlantic sloop, a 12 foot laminated mahogany sailing dinghy, 5 kayaks and 2 canoes (also two 37 foot steel sailboats in process). I am passionate about sailing boats and human powered boats of all sizes. But I still love sailing the model boats, they are so fun and beautiful and bring the joy of sailing alive in a very special way. In fact, I think I sail and race our model boats more frequently than I use my full sized boats! You can count on every one of our Tippecanoe boats, free-sailing toy boats and sophisticated radio control boats, to sail exceptionally well. I guarantee it!” – Will Lesh, Founder and Designer

Corel Model Ships

Corel have been manufacturing wooden model ship kits since 1971. Their historic ships are historically accurate and all ship model kits contain the highest quality parts, cast metal fittings and photo-etched brass parts, and the best available timbers. Wherever possible all parts are pre-cut and ready for assembly.

Disar Model create wooden ship model kits that reflect the rich maritime history of Spain. Disar Model has a team of model building professionals with over 20 years’ of experience in model ship design and building. Recreational sailing is a sport and pastime enjoyed by people around the world. Docks and marinas may be found along any stretch of coastline, lakeshore or riverfront, offering both coastal and inland enthusiasts the opportunity to take to catch the breeze and take to the water.

Historically, sailboats have been working boats for millennia. While royalty, nobles and aristocrats may have occasionally maintained vessels for personal use, these were primarily barges, such as the famous pleasure barges of Queen Elizabeth at Leichester or Queen Cleopatra on the Nile, intended for lakes or rivers. Sailing remained a difficult and dangerous business, and boating an occupation for the working class.

The coming of the steamboat and the Industrial Era changed the status of the sailboat from working vessel to pleasure craft. Increasingly powerful steam (and later diesel) engines rendered sails obsolete within a matter of decades, while advancing production technology enabled the construction of inexpensive sailboats on an industrial scale. Sailing was rapidly transformed in the common view from a profession to a pastime, and simultaneously the cost of purchasing a small boat became increasingly affordable for the middle-class.

As the middle-class enjoyed recreational day-sailing in small boats, certain types of large sailing ships, such as the windjammer class of ocean cargo ships or many fishing and whaling trawlers, continued to operate as working vessels. Meanwhile, the wealthy upper-classes turn their attention to the intermediate and rapidly expanding class of boats known as yachts.

“Jacht” was a Dutch term originally referring to a class of light, fast sailing ships used by the Dutch Navy to pursue pirates and outlaws in the shallow waters of Holland and the Low Countries. Similar vessels also served as customs inspectors or pilot boats, and when merchants recognized the speed and ability of these small boats to intercept larger tall ships at sea, they became to build private yachts in order to greet their inbound trade ships. Other wealthy individuals began building jachts for pleasure trips, which attracted the attention of King Charles II of England in the mid-17th century. When the king chose a jacht for his official conveyance back to England for the Restoration in 1660 following the English Civil War, the term “yacht” entered the English vocabulary.

Charles II had become an avid sport sailor during his time in the Netherlands, and commissioned the construction of an additional 24 royal yachts throughout his reign, sparking an interest in yachting among English aristocracy. Yacht reviews and regattas were already common in Holland, and these events passed to Britain and then spread throughout the aristocracy of mainland Europe. Yachts varied greatly in size, from small private pleasure boats to larger royal yachts to Dutch military vessels approaching the scale of 6th and 5th Rate ships-of-the-line.

In common use, however, the term “yacht” as understood in Britain and spread to continental Europe and the Americas signified exclusively pleasure craft with no commercial or military function. Yacht clubs formed where members could sail, display and race their yachts. One such race was held in 1851, sponsored by the Royal Yacht Squadron as their annual circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight. Fifteen English yachts participated in the regatta, joined by a single American entrant.

Appropriately named the America, this racing yacht was commissioned by members of the fledgling New York Yacht Club and designed as an over-sized pilot-boat. When the America bested her competition in the 53-mile race by finishing 8-minutes ahead of her nearest competitor, Queen Victoria is said to have asked the name of the second-place boat and received the famous reply, “Ah, Your Majesty, there is no second.”

The winning yachtsman returned their trophy to the New York Yacht Club, renaming it the America’s Cup and bestowing it to the club via the Deed of Gift. Other clubs were now able to challenge for possession of the Cup, and America’s Cup challenge races quickly became the most prestigious in yachting. Today it remains the oldest active trophy in international sport, successfully defended by the New York Yacht Club for an astonishing 126 years until the Royal Perth Yacht Club achieve victory with the Australia II, thus ending the longest winning streak in sports history. American yacht clubs have since twice reclaimed the trophy, and it has been held once each by clubs from New Zealand and Switzerland.

Not all races consisted of pleasure boats or purpose-built racing yachts. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, sailing ships still labored in certain professions, with the professionalism of the crews as well as a the speed and handling of their boats a matter of pride. Working vessels participated in races as well, such as competitive trade-runs by clipper ships or off-season races between working fishing boats. Among the latter, in the early 20th century Canadian schooner Bluenose from Nova Scotia held the International Fisherman’s Trophy against all challengers for 17 straight years, while also winning awards for the largest catch of the season and similar honors as an actively working fishing vessel.

With the advent of diesel powerboats, the last of the working sailboats faded into history. Modest yachts continued to become increasingly affordable for average owners, and the pastime of pleasure-boating increased in popularity. With the addition of inboard engines, yachts could now be enjoyed regardless of weather conditions as either sailed or powered vessels.

Still, to many sailing enthusiasts there is no greater joy that taking personal control of a one-person dinghy and harnessing the wind. Sailboats, whether large or small, are a heart-felt passion for millions and an icon of any day at the seashore.

They think she looks too good to be true.

Hyperrealistic artificial intelligence fakes have become so prevalent online that “attractive” people are now being mistaken for AI.

An Italian model claimed that she’s often accused of being a bot amid the proliferation of AI, which is known for generating flawless representations of people online.

“It’s extremely frustrating that people think I’m an AI model,” Ines Trocchia, 29, told Jam Press of the unfortunate phenomenon. “It’s complete insanity to me.”

The Naples-based influencer, who’s collaborated with high-end fashion brands from Philip Plein to Dolce & Gabbana , frequently uploads immaculate-looking glamor shots of herself for her more than 1.6 million followers on Instagram.

Trocchia says she’s spent years in front of the camera perfecting her craft and likes to show off the fruits of her labor.

Unfortunately, due to the proliferation of AI-generated supermodels online, many people wonder if she’s a genuine artifact — or simply another too-hot bot.

“It’s shocking to me that some people question if I’m real,” lamented Trocchia. “I don’t think my profile looks like that of a bot.”

The bombshell added, “You can always tell when an AI model has been used because they have the same sad expression in every single photo and video.”

Her case perhaps presents one of the pitfalls of being — to borrow the words of Ben Stiller in “Zoolander” — “really, really, really ridiculously good-looking” in the AI age.

Trocchia finds her predicament especially frustrating as she’s “got highlight reels that show me on a catwalk and things like that.”

This technological fallout entails more than just a case of mistaken AI-dentity: Troccia claims that online catfishers often hijack her likeness to generate views on social media.

“I’ve noticed bot accounts are even stealing my body and putting artificial faces on it,” she lamented. “One of my videos was outright stolen by a bot account and got more views on there than it did on my own profile.”

She’s not alone with the issue, either.

“I spoke with some of my colleagues and friends in the industry and they have the same problem,” the proud natural beauty added.

Trocchia claims that by blurring the line between the real and virtual worlds, AI contributes to already stratospheric beauty standards, which she finds bad for both the modeling industry and society overall.

“Some of the AI accounts that I have seen are completely impossible standards,” she explained. “The models tend to be super baby-faced with breasts and features that aren’t in proportion to their bodies.”

Troccia argued — perhaps somewhat ironically, given her vocation — that it’s “crazy” to strive for an “unbelievable level of perfection.”

In other words, beauty is in the AI of the beholder.

And while the model acknowledges that the tech has its place — she admits to using the tool to edit photographs — creating superhumanly hot AI robots is a bridge too far in her view.

“It’s completely different when you’re using it to create a person who doesn’t exist,” Trocchia declared.

Unfortunately, cases like Trocchia’s could become commonplace as the omnipresent tech becomes increasingly adept at engineering digital representations of everyone from online boyfriends to politicians .

Despite proliferating virtually, these fabrications can have serious ramifications in the real world.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

• The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
• The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company. 
• Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
