‘Blackbeard Pirate Ship’ reborn as the newest artificial reef off Destin-Fort Walton Beach coast

The Okaloosa Coastal Resource Team  successfully deployed the Aj’s Blackbeard Pirate Ship as the newest artificial reef off the Destin-Fort Walton Beach coast on Monday, October 30.

  • The steel-hulled vessel was donated by Alan Laird , owner of Aj’s Seafood & Oyster Bar in Destin. According to Laird, the ship had been a fixture in the harbor for 15-18 years and was previously known as the ‘Flying Eagle.’

“I don’t remember how long my neighbor owned it, but I picked it up probably 10-12 years ago,” Laird said. “We had a great business running it. We re-skinned the whole thing, and put a whole new hull in it.”

Laird said the ship was being repaired in a boatyard when it caught fire from someone cutting a metal plate, destroying the wooden interior and equipment.

“It was a catastrophe,” he said.

flying eagle yacht

After unsuccessfully trying to rebuild it,  Laird decided to scuttle the Blackbeard and bought a different wooden schooner for his tourism business.

The Blackbeard was a popular vessel,  Laird said, used for Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, excursions from his restaurant and sunset cruises before the fire.

  • “Blackbeard was a boat that I had for a long time and just couldn’t seem to get the thing back where I needed it to be,” he said.

When the opportunity came up to  turn it into an artificial reef,  Laird jumped at the chance to partner with the Okaloosa Coastal Resource team. Laird is no stranger to sinking artificial reefs. He previously sank the Harbor Belle, which was originally a restaurant-barge on the harbor. Additionally, he acquired a large water basin from Eglin Air Force Base and used it to enhance more than 300 chicken coop deployments over the years.

flying eagle yacht

“Fishing, and our fishermen, is Destin’s culture and is what makes this town what it is,” Laird said. “So by being able to put Blackbeard down on the bottom means everything.”

Laird said the  steel ship standing upright  on the seabed will attract both bottom fish like grouper, while also attracting mackerel and cobia higher up.

  • “We’ve had great success in the past, and I’m looking for great success when we sink this one,” he added.

Laird said the partnership continues the ship’s tourism legacy  above and below the waves.

“It covers two spans of tourism, so it continues to be a vital part of the community, along with the fishing and diving industry,” he said.

Laird said he is happy to partner with the county on this artificial reef deployment and said he’d be open for other opportunities that may arise in the future.

“They [Coastal Resource Team] have resourced so many wrecks and fishing reefs. This vessel will join a big area that’s been turned into a whole boatyard down there,” Laird said. “And partnering with Alex Fogg and the Coastal Resource Team has been tremendous.”

flying eagle yacht

Before Monday’s deployment,  the Blackbeard was in its final cleanup stages at Morgan Marine in Freeport. Coastal Resource Manager Alex Fogg explained that all debris was removed and that the steel hull is intact.

  • The ship will join the Cordanzo tugboat  sunk earlier this year at the county’s Yacht Club artificial reef site about 16 miles offshore, according to Fogg.

flying eagle yacht

“In recent years, our artificial reef program has really taken off,” Fogg said. “And a lot of folks have been coming to us wanting to partner on these projects by providing vessels to us for free like this.”

Community partnerships  like the one is vital for the success of the county’s artificial reef program, Fogg said. And given the Blackbeard’s history with tourism, it’s only right that it transforms into an artificial reef.

“It’s come full circle,” added Fogg. “It’s only appropriate that its final resting place is in the Gulf of Mexico, making more habitat for the fish that people like to see while diving and fishing.”

If you’re looking to explore the Blackbeard,  here are the coordinates:

  • 30° 08.340 N, 86° 33.897 W

About Bloemsma & van Breemen... The origins of Bloemsma & van Breemen can be traced back to 1974, when customised hulls were built under the name Jachtwerf Bloemsma of Makkum. The company built a total of 136 complete hulls in both steel and aluminium, as well as constructing superstructures for other yards. The building of complete yachts began in 1997, and has included six classic Hoek Design sailing yachts plus four very different custom projects: the 60’ Vripack Doggersbank Trewes, the 59’ Beeldsnijder Maskot, the 82’ Hoek racer/cruiser Bharlin Blue ,and the 96’ Vripack Doggersbank Offshore Patriot. The yard’s capacity has been extended with two new building halls, offering the capacity to build up to 65 metres in length. Two contrasting motoryachts have just been completed: Griffioen, a 90’ classic from De Vries Lentsch Design, and Flying Eagle, a modern 157’ displacement boat by Reymond Langton Design.

The Flying Eagle, with the excursion barge Little Gate, on the Upper Mississippi River. (Keith Norrington collection)

The Flying Eagle

Originally named Irene D, this former rafter was built in 1888 at Rock Island, Ill. It was constructed on a wooden hull that measured 133.5 feet in length by 29.6 feet in width, and with a depth of 4.8 feet; tonnage was listed as 142. In 1898, the boat was rebuilt as the Flying Eagle by Capt. Thomas Adams of Quincy, Ill., who had purchased it for use as an excursion boat.

Records of the Steamboat Inspection Service indicate that the sternwheeler had a good safety record, with the only accident reported being that of a deckhand, Manuel Davis, getting scalded by steam escaping from the safety valve on April 2, 1901.

On June 3, 1903, at 10:30 in the morning, the Flying Eagle departed the landing at Hannibal, Mo., with the excursion barge Little Gate, loaded with members of the Park Methodist Church, in tow. The boats proceeded upstream through the draw span of the Wabash Railway Bridge. Due to the high stage of water and a strong cross current, the paddlewheel and stern of the Flying Eagle struck the protection works of the upper end of the draw span. The two vessels topped around against the bridge pier. The engines of the steamboat were immediately reversed in an attempt to straighten up, but the Flying Eagle unfortunately backed sharply against the rocky river bank. The sternwheel was quickly reduced to splinters and the boat was rendered helpless. The situation went from bad to worse as the riverboat broke loose from the barge and sank in 40 feet of water below the bridge. The excursion barge then struck the bridge and turned on its side. All but 60 people escaped onto the upper works of the bridge. A majority of those who could not seek refuge on the bridge were pulled from the river by the Hannibal ferry boat and by skiffs from locals who joined the rescue mission. Three passengers and one crew member lost their lives.

At the time of the accident, Capt. Thomas Adams (owner of the boat) was in command. Capt. Frank Slater was on watch in the pilothouse, with Edward

Meals presiding in the engineroom; A. Roberts was the steward.

Reportedly, the unlucky vessel was the second steamboat to carry the name Flying Eagle. A previous boat was originally the sternwheeler Savanna, built in 1863 at Brownsville, Pa. Constructed on a wooden hull measuring 156 feet by 35 feet, the vessel operated between Pittsburgh and St. Louis, in command of Capt. Isaac Mason. This riverboat was heavily damaged in an ice gorge at St. Louis on December 12, 1876. During the spring of 1881, the sternwheeler was rebuilt and renamed Flying Eagle, operating in the St. Louis-St. Paul trade, under the command of Capt. Thomas Boland. The steamboat sank at St. Louis in 1888.

River Trivia

It was 50 years ago this spring, on the weekend of April 12–13, 1969, that the Midship Museum first opened to the public aboard the Becky Thatcher (formerly the steamer Mississippi) at the St. Louis levee. Designed and curated by beloved river historian Ruth Ferris (1897-1993), the museum contained dazzling displays of artifacts from the Eagle Packet Company, Goldenrod Showboat, Eagle Boat Store, Streckfus Steamers and other riverboat memorabilia.

Founder: John (Zhangyou) Xiong.

In 1985, 38 year old John resigned from a local shipyard to start his own company - Hangzhou Flying Eagle Boat. History

HOW WE BEGAN

Entrepreneur Howard Winklevoss is the founder of RowAmerica, an organization dedicated to the advancement of the sport. Watching his twin sons become dedicated and skilled rowers at the Saugatuck Rowing Association (SRA) in Westport, CT, inspired Winklevoss greatly and he immediately fell in love with the sport. In 1997, he started a rowing program at their high school in Greenwich, CT so other students could learn to row.

When the existence of the SRA was threatened in 1998 by the proposed sale of the club’s rented land for condominiums, Winklevoss started RowAmerica and formed a Club Division to purchase the land on which to build and manage a new club instead. The Saugatuck Rowing Club paved the way for the Greenwich Rowing Club in 2002 and the two clubs continue to be the heart of a thriving rowing community in the Fairfield County area with over 1,000 adult and junior members.

With two clubs and a combined fleet of 75 rowing shells from many different manufacturers to maintain, RowAmerica began to focus on the way shells are sold and serviced in the US. Winklevoss, his rowing directors, and staff of fourteen American and international coaches, began to envision change. He met with Drew Harrison and met with designer Klaus Filter and the Xiong family of Flying Eagle Boat Company to lay the groundwork for launching WinTech Racing to make that vision a reality.

WINTECH Racing is now owned by Flying Eagle Boat company and is one of the largest boat builders in existence with a 500,000 square-foot state of the art manufacturing facility and worldwide distribution.

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

Global war for control of the ARCTIC: Climate change is unlocking untapped natural resources, new trade routes... and a new international conflict that RUSSIA is already winning

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.
