$10 Million Yacht Sinks During Launch in Washington State

A yacht sits on its side on May 19 near Anacortes, Wash.

A $10 million, 90-foot yacht was being launched in Washington state when it suddenly capsized.

The yacht, named Baden, had already been lowered into the water in Anacortes, about 80 miles north of Seattle, when it slowly tilted and then sank, according to media reports .

The cause of last month's accident is under investigation, but New World Yacht Builders, which built the yacht under the Northern Marine brand, said the problem appeared to be in the launch apparatus, not with the boat.

"The physical evidence on, and adjacent to, the launch ramp suggests that the dolly carrying the weight of the port stern of the yacht may have suddenly dropped off the edge of the boat ramp during the launch, causing the vessel to experience a sudden list to port, from which it could not recover in its light condition for launch," Northern Marine said in a press release .

A YouTube video from YachtVid shows someone at the launch ceremony breaking the ritual champagne bottle on the hull before the boat slid into the water.

As it entered the water, the vessel started to lean to the port side, and then quickly capsized. Six people were on board and all escaped serious injury, according to reports.

Northern Marine said it has launched more than 35 vessels at the same ramp with no previous problems. Baden is a so-called "explorer yacht," designed more for remote expeditions than leisure.

The company added that it has "complete confidence" in its designs. According to a local media report , New World Yacht has since laid off its staff of 52 and production has been suspended.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch praises rescue of pair from sinking yacht off Hillarys

Top cop praises rescue of crew from sinking yacht.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch has thanked those who helped rescue two crew members from a sinking yacht off Hillarys, saying it could have been a “very dangerous and tragic outcome”.

The pair were recovered from a single-masted yacht called the Serenity which was believed to have run aground on a reef on Sunday.

Police say they responded to an emergency call about 4.35pm, advising them there was two people onboard and water was flooding the vessel.

Vision showed the front of the yacht was left almost submerged in the choppy waters off Hillarys.

Water police and Department of Fire and Emergency Services marine rescue Whitfords deployed vessels to the area, while the Westpac Life Saver rescue helicopter and RAC Rescue helicopter were also activated.

The marine rescue crew arrived at the scene first, and were able to confirm the two crew members were still onboard the vessel and remained alongside them until water police arrived a short time later.

Dramatic body-worn camera vision shows the moment police arrived, telling the pair: “We’ll get you to come aboard our boat, you’re going down. You need to get off.”

Two people were rescued from the water after their yacht, Serenity, sank.

The two crew members onboard were taken to Hillarys marina and remarkably, they avoided serious injury.

Meanwhile, debris spilled into the water after it took just minutes for the boat sink.

On Monday, Mr Blanch thanked everyone who responded to the emergency.

“It was a great response and saved lives because it could have been a very dangerous and a tragic outcome, but thankfully, a good result,” he said.

Photos: 7 rescued from yacht taking on water off Washington coast

SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard says its crews rescued seven people over the weekend after a large yacht took on water and became disabled 25 miles (40 kilometers) off the Washington coast.

Workers at Coast Guard Sector Columbia River command center received a radio call from the crew of the 143-foot (44-meter) vessel at 6 a.m. Saturday, The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release Monday.

The crew said the yacht was taking on water because they couldn’t get the transom door at the back of the yacht to close. The yacht crew members also said they engaged the engine room fire suppression system after seeing smoke, which disabled the vessel.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, lifeboat crews from Station Grays Harbor and Station Quillayute River, and a 210-foot medium endurance cutter were sent to the yacht for evacuations and towing.

No medical concerns and no pollution from the yacht were reported.

The cutter arrived that afternoon to tow the yacht toward the Strait of Juan De Fuca entrance where the tow would be passed to a commercial salvage company. That process took nearly 24 hours, according to the Coast Guard.

The commercial tug was scheduled to tow the yacht to a shipyard in Port Angeles for repairs.

SEATTLE — Seven boaters were rescued after their 143-foot yacht began taking on water off the Washington coast.

The yacht's crew called the U.S. Coast Guard for help around 6 a.m. Saturday stating they were taking on water due to the transom door opening and failing to close.

Smoke began pouring from the area, so crews engaged a fire suppression system, which rendered the yacht disabled about 25 miles west of Grays Harbor.

A Coast Guard helicopter and lifeboat crew reached the scene and found the crew in good shape, but the yacht too large to tow back to safety. A larger Coast Guard cutter was summoned and help tow the yacht to an awaiting commercial tug near Neah Bay while the Coast Guard picked up the seven passengers.

85-foot yacht sinks at launching in Washington

ANACORTES, Wash. – An 85-foot yacht that sank as it was being launched Sunday in Anacortes, Washington, has been pulled upright while the Coast Guard investigates what went wrong.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Jordan Akiyama says an incident management team is looking into why the new vessel capsized. The yacht worth millions of dollars is being salvaged.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports six people were aboard as Northern Marine Industries launched the yacht. When it began to roll, several went to the engine room to adjust ballast but water flooded inside.

Most of the workers got out easily but one was trapped. Rescuers had to chop out a porthole to pull him free.

The yacht had 120 gallons of diesel on board but none leaked.

Men rescued clinging to esky after boat sinks off Garden Island

Four men forced to spend 30 minutes in the ocean when their boat sank off WA’s coast on Sunday may have lost their beers but they kept their sense of humour.

Emergency crews were called to reports a boat was taking on water and sinking about 300m off Garden Island just after 7am.

Water Police arrived about 15 minutes later and found the boat had indeed sunk, with only its bow visible above the water line, and its four occupants in the ocean.

Bodycam footage captured during the rescue showed two men being helped from the sea before the remaining two were found clinging to a green ice cooler.

Despite having to tread water for about half an hour before all four were rescued, their humour was still intact.

“Oh no, the other Esky’s got beers in it,” one rescued man said.

“That one’s just ice and bloody bait.”

None of the four were seriously injured during their scary stint in the water, WA Police said.

Their sunken vessel was towed back to shore.

Multimillion-Dollar Yacht Sinks After Launching in Washington

The floating palace capsized, sending six people into the water.

May 20, 2014— -- Refund, please!

A new, multimillion-dollar yacht capsized when it was launched in Anacortes, Washington, dumping six people into the water.

Wade Benda, the yacht's mechanic, was on board the vessel Sunday after he and a team spent nearly three years building the boat when it suddenly flipped over.

The crew was reportedly going to deliver the yacht to its new owner when the maiden voyage went terribly wrong.

PHOTO: An 85-foot-long yacht overturned while it was being launched at an Anacortes, Wash., May 18, 2014.

"I'm relieved that I'm here on the ground and I just want to thank the good Lord above that, I'm here it was just a scary moment," Benda told ABC News' Seattle affiliate KOMO-TV .

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

However, Benda said he thinks the boat's stabilizer hit some rocks when it first rolled near the ramp. He told KOMO they then tried to "thrust" the yacht into deeper water, but to no avail.

All six people on board were rescued.

Watch: Russia accidentally sinks its own fishing boat with missile

Moscow’s Baltic Sea Fleet accidentally sank a Russian fishing trawler with a missile during training exercises, according to reports.

Footage of the alleged incident posted on social media shows a fishing vessel, painted navy and red, with its hull on fire.

Three people were killed in the strike and four others injured, a relative of one of the dead men claimed on Thursday to TV Rain, an independent Russian TV channel.

The incident reportedly took place on March 19 when the Baltic Sea Fleet, taking part in war exercises in Kaliningrad , launched a live missile that hit Captain Lobanov, a Russian fishing trawler.

Russian authorities claimed that the incident was caused by a fire onboard the ship and said only one person had died, TV Rain reported.

“When the survivors were taken away, everyone knew perfectly well that three people had died and everyone knew perfectly well that a rocket had hit,” the relative told TV Rain.

“But they decided to write that there was a ‘fire’. I wonder what kind of fire this is, if the captain’s cabin is completely gone – it was simply demolished.”

Another missile was caught in fishing nets near the trawler, TV Rain’s source added.

After being taken to a hospital, the survivors were reportedly interrogated by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) officers who asked them “not to talk about the incident”.

Russian state media reports have confirmed that the Baltic Sea Fleet was taking part in exercises when the incident took place.

The Baltic Sea Fleet press service said that during training, the crew of the corvette Boikiy worked on “searching, detecting and destroying a mock enemy submarine using an anti-submarine weapon system”, the Russian state-owned media agency Tass reported.

The corvette also “performed practical firing from artillery systems at sea and air targets” and “practised the actions of striking a detachment of mock enemy ships with the Uran missile system ”, the Tass report added.

Victorian ferry rescues children from boat after fears of fire off Queenscliff

A white ferry with 'Searoad Ferries' on its side.

Victorian school students have been rescued from a boat in Port Phillip this morning after its engine started smoking.

Police said 22 passengers, including school students, were in the boat off Queenscliff when a suspected engine bay fire broke out about 8:30am.

A ferry and a Parks Victoria vessel quickly responded a short time later and all passengers were safely evacuated onto the ferry.

Nobody was injured, a police spokesperson said.

A spokesperson from the school, Hamilton and Alexandra College, said a group of year eight and nine students were attending a two-day outdoor education camp in Queenscliff when the incident occurred.

"This morning, 20 students and two staff members were on board a snorkelling boat when the engine stopped working and a small amount of smoke was detected," the spokesperson said.

"As a precautionary measure, action was taken immediately to have all passengers calmly evacuated onto the Queenscliff-Sorrento Ferry."

The owner of the boat escorting the students, James Murphy, said the evacuation of was a standard procedure following a "very minor incident".

"Shortly after departure the skipper noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the engine room, he's then reverted back to our safety management system procedures," Mr Murphy told ABC.

"Part of those procedures is to ensure everybody on board are safe, so [the skipper] has called the local vessel … and they've collected the passengers while he ascertained what the challenge was.

"He was able to get the boat started again, no challenge, and driven it back to the harbour so we're treating it as a very minor incident."

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the fire were still being investigated, but it was not being treated as suspicious.

Mass grave of at least 65 people found in Libya, UN migration agency says

International Organization for Migration believes those discovered ‘died in process of being smuggled through the desert’

A mass grave containing at least 65 bodies has been discovered in south-west Libya this week, the UN migration agency said on Friday.

A spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said the mass grave was uncovered by Libyan security forces.

The IOM said in a statement it was “profoundly shocked and alarmed”. It added that the circumstances of the deaths “remains unknown, but it is believed that they died in the process of being smuggled through the desert”.

More than a decade of violent instability since the 2011 overthrow and killing of the dictator Muammar Gaddafi in a Nato-backed uprising helped turn Libya into a fertile ground for people-smugglers and traffickers, who have long been accused of abuses against migrants.

The IOM said it appreciated that Libyan authorities had launched an investigation into the deaths. It called on them to “ensure a dignified recovery, identification and transfer of the remains of the deceased migrants”, and notify and assist their families.

The spokesperson said: “Each report of a missing migrant or a loss of life represents a grieving family searching for answers about their loved ones or acknowledging the tragedy of the loss.

“The cost of inadequate action is evident in the increasing human deaths and the disturbing conditions migrants find themselves in.”

The IOM said the deaths showed “the urgent need to address the challenges of irregular migration including through a coordinated response to the smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons”.

“Without regular pathways that provide opportunities for legal migration, such tragedies will continue to be a feature along this route,” it said.

According to the IOM’s Missing Migrants project, at least 3,129 deaths and disappearances were recorded in 2023 along the Mediterranean route to Europe, making it the world’s deadliest migratory route.

The IOM called on authorities in countries along the route to “enhance regional cooperation to ensure the safety and protection of migrants, regardless of their status, and across all stages of their journeys”.
