8 Flybridge Yachts Under 60 Feet Always In Demand

8 Flybridge Yachts Under 60 Feet Always In Demand

December 21, 2018 9:41 am

Flybridge yachts under 60 feet have evolved over the years from the iconic double-deck Hatteras (Hargrave) designs of the 1970s and 1980s to today’s sleek Eurostyle yachts with their curvaceous lines and acres of window glass. European styling caught on in America in the late 1990s when builders like Sea Ray, Carver and Bayliner introduced a series of successful new models designed to appeal to the growing baby boomer market.

Today nearly all flybridge motoryachts are imported from Europe and the only U.S. builders remaining in this market segment are Marquis, Meridian and — to a lesser extent — Sea Ray. While flybridge yachts under 60 feet are nowhere near as popular as express yachts this size, their popularity has remained fairly consistent and new models continue to evolve. That said, profiled below are eight of the most popular flybridge models produced in recent years.

–Ed McKnew, Powerboat Specialist

best yacht under 60 feet

Sunseeker Manhattan 52 2008–11

At a Glance: A top-selling yacht (over 50 were built), it’s fair to say the Sunseeker Manhattan 52 set the standards during her production years for motoryacht styling, luxury and performance. Deigned to mirror many of the features of her larger siblings, the three stateroom, galley down interior includes a spacious salon with C-shaped leather settee, full entertainment center and high-gloss cherry cabinets. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Manhattan 52 is her spacious and opulent owner’s suite.

A crew cabin with single berth and small head is aft. The outdoor space aboard the Manhattan is impressive. Aside from her large cockpit, there is a roomy flybridge whose deck forms a hardtop over most of the cockpit. MAN 800hp (or 715hp Cat) engines cruise the 52 Manhattan at 24–26 knots (30+ knots top).

Price Range: From the mid $600s.

Sunseeker Manhattan 52 2017–Current

At a Glance:   Spectacular styling, very spacious accommodations and strong performance rank the Manhattan 52 among the finest cruising yachts in this class. Said to be the fastest selling model in the Sunseeker fleet. The outside living areas are especially impressive, particularly the unique foredeck dining area and the expansive flybridge which extends well aft over the cockpit.

Entering the interior, the galley is aft where it’s easily accessed from the cockpit. With the galley window down the countertop forms a bar on the port side of the cockpit—very clever. The salon windows are hugel. Below, there are accommodations for six guests in three cabins. The hydraulic bathing platform features a pop-up shower, bench and optional grill. Offered with IPS drives of straight inboards, twin Volvo 725hp D11 inboard engines cruise at 25–26 knots (30+ knots top).

Price Range: From about $1.3 million.

Marquis 500 Sport Bridge 2009–16

At a Glance: The bold lines, megayacht-style interior and triple-IPS power system of the Marquis 500 Sport Bridge offer something different from most motoryachts this size. Perhaps the most innovative feature of the 500 SB is what Marquis calls a “sliding transom” that glides aft with a push of a button to create additional cockpit space. The well-appointed interior features dark Zebrano wood, black granite counters, and cherry flooring throughout.

Below, the three-stateroom layout includes a forward master suite with ensuite head, VIP queen to port, and twin single berths in the second guest cabin. The galley, salon, cockpit, and swim platform are all on the same level. A optional hydraulic swim platform makes lowering the tender in and out of the water an easy task. Triple Volvo 435hp IPS pod drives cruise the at over 30 knots.

Price Range:  From about $1.3 million.

best yacht under 60 feet

Princess 56 Flybridge 2014–Current

At a Glance:   The Princess 56 is a stylish flybridge yacht that shares many design features with larger Princess models. The interior is beautifully finished with high-gloss cabinetry, indirect lighting and quality furnishings throughout. Below, guests enjoy an ensuite VIP cabin in the bow and a twin cabin (with beds that convert electrically to a double) aft and to starboard.

The master suite is aft with queen berth, settee, and huge rectangular glass panes that set new standards for hull windows in a yacht this size. Crew quarters with a single bed and head are aft. The cockpit boasts a teak dining table and bench seating. Teak-laid steps on either side lead down to the bathing platform. The vast flybridge features a sun bed, twin helm seats, wet bar, barbecue and dining areas. MAN 800hp inboards cruise at 25–26 knots (low 30s top).

Price Range: Used prices begin at just under $1 million.

best yacht under 60 feet

Prestige 550 Fly 2012–Current

At a Glance: Distinctive French motor yacht with the emphasis on affordability. The interior of the 550 Fly is arranged with a large and open galley aft in the salon. Lower helm visibility is exceptional on this vessel. Three staterooms and two heads (plus crew quarters aft) are on the lower level including an elegant full-beam master suite with private salon access, large hull side windows, and walk-in closet.

The VIP stateroom, forward, has an island double, while the third, twin-berth, stateroom comes with a filler. This model comes in two versions: The Prestige 550 Fly (flybridge), and the Prestige 550 S with an electrically operated sunroof. Built on a lightweight cored hull, the 550 Fly will cruise at 24–26 knots with 600hp Cummins diesels coupled to Zeus pod drives (30+ top). Note that the pods are located well aft and a jackshaft connects the engines to the pods.

Price Range: From the high $700s.

best yacht under 60 feet

Azimut 50 Flybridge 2015–Current

At a Glance:   A striking yacht with unusually large salon windows, the Azimut 50 Flybridge is a three stateroom Italian yacht with Azimut’s signature vertical hull windows and a decidedly broad bow area. Below decks, a U-shaped settee sits to starboard with a wood table at its center. Another settee is to port in the salon, and the raised lower helm is forward to starboard. Contrary to current trends, the galley is down rather than aft in the salon.

Storage is scarce and countertop space is extremely limited. The owner’s cabin is amidships, and the VIP cabin is at the bow as is the second guest cabin with two Pullman berths. The cockpit is completely shaded by the flybridge overhang and a U-shaped lounge runs the length of the transom. A hydraulic swim platform is standard. Volvo 670hp inboards cruise at 26–27 knots.

Price Range:   From about $1.1 million.

best yacht under 60 feet

Azimut 5 Evolution 2002–11

At a Glance:   The 55 Evolution (called the 55 Flybridge in 2001–04) displays a styling scheme very different from earlier Azimut motoryachts. Gone are the tiered cabin windows of previous years replaced by fin-shaped salon windows. Also new were vertical glass panels in the hullsides, a design innovation that has become common in newer Azimuts. The open-plan salon features a C-shaped leather sofa to port and entertainment center to starboard.

The galley and dining area are forward, two steps up from the salon. Below, there are three staterooms and two full heads including a full-beam amidships master, VIP queen forward, and guest cabin with side-by-side berths. Lacquered cherry wood cabinets and trim are used throughout the interior. Crew quarters with a single berth and toilet are aft. Cat 715hp C12 V-drive diesels cruise at 26 knots (30+ top).

Price Range:   From the mid to high $300s.

best yacht under 60 feet

Carver 570 Voyager 2001–05

At a Glance:   A seriously popular boat, the 570 Voyager is a stretched version of the Carver 530 Voyager (1998–2005) with the extra length used to enlarge the salon and galley. The three stateroom cherry interior is arranged with the galley forward in the very spacious salon with its long L-shaped sofa to starboard and club chairs opposite. A breakfast bar is built into the galley counter, and large windows together with nearly seven feet of headroom combine to create an unusually open and airy salon.

Below, the amidships master stateroom features a walkaround queen berth and ensuite head with tub/shower. The VIP stateroom forward includes a queen berth, and the second guest stateroom offers over/under bunks. A big attraction of the 570 is the roomy pilothouse with L-shaped leather sofa and wraparound helm console. Volvo 675hp diesels cruise at 22–24 knots.

Price Range:   From about $300K.

14 Great Pocket Cruisers in 2023

  • By Victor Tan
  • Updated: July 20, 2023

Pocket cruisers and mini yachts are generally vessels under 50 feet in length overall, and can include express cruiser designs, flybridge yachts as well as either monohull or catamaran hull forms. They are cruising boats easily handled by a small, or even shorthanded, crew. Pocket cruisers generally have wave-taming hull designs and have the ability to take on sporty seas, offer comfortable accommodations belowdecks with one or two staterooms for extended voyages, “homelike amenities,” and the ability to cruise as slowly or as quickly as an owner desires with inboard- and outboard-power options. These pocket-cruising boats have the range for longer voyages , can pull up in skinny water at the sandbar thanks to shallow drafts, and head over the horizon where cruising adventure awaits. Pocket cruisers are true multitasking yachts. When it comes to family and couples cruising, it’s hard to beat a well-built and well-equipped and pocket cruiser.

Best Cruising Boats Under 50-Feet

The following 14 pocket cruisers and mini yachts are all vessels we’ve seen, been aboard, and tested. They are listed in no particular order.

  • Hood 35 LM: high-tech, family-friendly pocket cruiser
  • Galeon Yachts 375 GTO: mid-size boat with plenty of below-deck space
  • Aquila 42: sleek power catamaran ready to entertain
  • Azimut Verve 42 : small, yet mighty yacht ready for open water
  • Hinckley Yachts 35: luxury picnic cruiser with range
  • Beneteau Gran Turismo 45: sleek cruising yacht with all the amenities
  • Solaris Power 48 Open: eye-catching power yacht with 360-degree views
  • Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS: luxury cruiser yacht with powerful outboard options
  • Back Cove 34O: modern outboard power combined with classic Downeast styling
  • Picnic Boat 40: speedy and fuel-efficient vessel with great looks
  • Aquila 36: comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt
  • Boston Whaler 350 Realm: multitasker built for fishing and entertaining
  • MJM 35z: sporty, aesthetically pleasing, cruising-conscious features and elegant lines
  • Greenline 39: sturdy-looking lines and environmentally-friendly power

When Android co-founder, Rich Miner, wanted a new family-friendly pocket cruiser , he turned to a custom-penned C.W. Hood design and a Lyman-Morse-built 35-footer, which has a timeless Down East profile matched to seriously modern technology under the hood.

This yacht looks like a traditional, cold-molded Down East dayboat, but actually, it has everything, from Hamilton HJX Series water-jet drives to a planned Sea Machines autonomous command-and-control system . Top speed: 40-plus knots.

Galeon yachts 375 gto.

Even the remnants of Hurricane Ian, couldn’t dissuade the Galeon Yacht 375 GTO from its cruising mission. The small yacht’s wave-splitting hull form is paired to torque-filled 600 hp Mercury Verado outboards , giving this fun-in-the-sun boat a 47-knot top hop.

The 375 GTO is a speedster, to be sure, but it’s also so much more. Just about every aspect of the main deck seating is transformable and multifunction, from the aft seating to the alfresco dining abaft the helm, and beyond. It also has a family-size and eminently cruise-worthy belowdecks space for four guests, all while providing a foredeck entertaining lounge too.

The Galeon Yachts 375 GTO ticks all the boxes for an easy-to-handle and sporty cruiser.

Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran

Following the success of its 44-, 54- and 70-foot power catamaran models, Aquila has launched the stable-as-a-table, owner-operator-ready Aquila 42 Yacht Power Catamaran .

The Aquila 42 is the entry point into the builder’s yacht line and is noteworthy for its ability to accommodate anywhere from a two- to four-stateroom layout, depending on the owner’s cruising requirements. There are alfresco spaces to manage the sunset cruise with friends and family, including a foredeck lounge area that can be accessed via centerline steps from the flybridge. The Aquila 42 is available with several Volvo Penta diesel-engine options .

Aquila 42

Azimut Verve 42

Want to cruise from Florida to Bimini in about an hour? The Azimut Yachts Verve 42 can do that thanks, in part, to triple 450 hp Mercury Racing outboards and a hull designed to dice-and-slice a seaway. Top hop: 45 knots. The Verve 42 also has style for miles with a fine entry, raked hardtop, and a razorlike sheerline accented by sweeping hull glass from bow to stern. It’s striking.

With accommodation for a family of four, the Verve 42 is also solid under the hull tokeep everyone safe on those passages. The Verve 42’s hull is built of fiberglass and uses vinylester resins for blister protection. The yacht’s deck and hardtop are comprised of carbon fiber for strength without added weight. This all means that the Azimut Verve 42 is built to CE Classification Type A , making it suitable for sea voyages where winds can exceed 45 mph and seas to 13 feet.

Azimut Verve 42

Hinckley Yachts 35

The Hinckley Yachts 35 takes everything that yachtsmen like about this pedigreed-brand’s classic profile and infuses today’s modern outboard power to create 40 knots of sheer fun wrapped in sheer luxury.

This 35-foot Hinckley is built on a Michael-Peters-penned hull form with a fine entry, wider-than-average chines and a moderate deadrise. While the boat is built to sprint when desired, it’s also a relatively economical cruiser. For instance, a comfortable 24-knot cruise the Hinckley Yachts 35 has a 276-nautical-mile range.

It also has a tech-build thanks to vacuum-infused carbon-fiber composites and epoxy resin. An integrated interior structure is infused with the hull adding rigidity. The hull is then post-cured in an 80-foot oven, further strengthening the structure.

Hinckley 35

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

The Beneteau Gran Turismo is the flagship of the builder’s four-model GT series, which also includes 32-, 36- and 41-foot models.

The Gran Turismo 45 ’s cruise-centric layout includes two staterooms and two heads belowdecks, as well as a galley down. There is also a dinette for meals and a settee for rainy-day lounging. Entertaining guests and enjoying the sun is the primary mission of the main deck.

Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

Solaris Power 48 Open

The Solaris Power 48 Open was the first powerboat from this longtime builder known for its sailing yachts, ranging from 40 to 110 feet length overall. The Solaris Power 48 Open is notable for its wave-slicing plumb-bow design, high freeboard forward and 32-knot-plus speed. Power is twin 480 hp Volvo Penta IPS650 diesels.

The high freeboard keeps the deck dry and help creates sizable volume belowdecks with an average 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This enables real estate for either one or two staterooms. With the single-stateroom setup, there is a forepeak master stateroom while an L-shaped settee converts to sleeping accommodations for family or occasional guests. Interior wood options are oak or walnut.

Solaris 48 Open

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Outboard-power cruising aficionados will appreciate the triple-engine options for the Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS . The 42 GLS we got aboard had the triple 400 hp Mercury Verados , which produced a top hop of 45 knots, but triple 450 hp Verados are available. Triple 350 hp Mercury Verados are the standard engine option. No matter the power arrangement, this express cruiser can easily be used for wakeboarding and tube towing. The 42 GLS is designed to handle the rough stuff too, with a fine entry and 21-degree transom deadrise.

For cruising enthusiasts, the 42 GLS has a master stateroom with an athwartships and a nearly queen-size berth, and the lower salon’s U-shaped dinette converts to a queen-size berth for the kids.

Cruisers Yachts 42 GLS

Back Cove 34O

Combining modern outboard power with classic Downeast styling, the Back Cove 34O touts award-winning standards with cruising in mind. The 34O is equipped with twin 300 hp Yamaha outboards, engines that allow the Newport International Boat Show’s 2018 Best Powerboat Under 35 Feet winner to travel up to 214 nautical miles at 24 knots on a 250-gallon fuel tank.

Belowdecks, the 34O has an island double berth and a split-head arrangement with the toilet to port and a separate shower stall to starboard. On the main deck, a U-shape dinette to port accommodates four or more guests on the Back Cove Yachts vessel. The 34O’s galley is equipped with a Cuisinart microwave, a two-burner Kenyon electric cooktop and a Vitrifrigo fridge and freezer.

Picnic Boat 40

Hinckley Yachts unveiled its first Picnic Boat more than two decades ago. Now, after two previous, sub-40-foot models, the Maine-based boatbuilder has developed its largest and most advanced model to date: the Picnic Boat 40.

Twin 480 hp Cummins diesel engines paired to twin Hamilton 322 jet drives propel the yacht to a 30-knot cruising speed and 34 knots on the pins. With optional twin 550 hp Cummins diesels, cruise and top-end speeds jump to 35 and 38 knots, respectively.

There is an L-shaped settee with a table and a wet bar on the main deck to port. The helm station is forward and to starboard with a benchseat for two. There is also a companion seat across from the helm. Belowdecks, there is 6-foot-2-inch headroom, and the dinette table drops to form a California-king berth for overnights and weekending.

hinckley picnic boat 40

Aquila Power Catamarans started its line with 44- and 48-footers, and now the builder’s Aquila 36 takes the line into the midsize market.

The 36 features a single, main-living area from bow to stern, helped in part by the vessel’s 14-foot, 7-inch beam. The boat can comfortably seat up to 20 guests for fun on the salt. Several Mercury Verado engine options are available for the Aquila 36, including twin 250-, 300- and 350-hp four-strokes. With the 350s, the Aquila has a top-end speed of 37 knots.

Other notable features include a fiberglass hardtop, a dinette, a cooktop, a fridge, a sink and a smokeless grill. Belowdecks, there are two staterooms with nearly queen-size berths, en suite heads and 6-foot-6-inch headroom in each.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

From fishing and entertaining guests to diving and overnight cruising, Boston Whaler ‘s 350 Realm is a multitasker. And it’s fast, too. It’s powered with either triple 300 hp or triple 350 hp Mercury Verados. The 350 Realm can reach a top speed of 46 knots.

At the helm, two Raymarine displays provide vital navigation data. The captain can take in the displays’ view from a doublewide helm seat. There’s a flip-down platform for standing when needed and a footrest when desired.

There is a V-shaped berth that converts into a double berth with a filler cushion. The separated head has a VacuFlush MSD and a hot-and-cold shower. Owners also have the option to add a microwave and a flat-screen TV.

Boston Whaler 350 Realm

The MJM 35z can reach a top speed of 44 knots and a cruising speed of 33 knots on its optional 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards; twin 300 hp outboards are standard on this MJM Yachts vessel. Additionally, the 35z can travel up to 304 nautical miles on its 250-gallon fuel tank.

The 35z has a flush-deck layout and to port is space for an electric grill, a baitwell, a sink, an ice maker and a fridge. There are two Stidd helm seats—one for the helmsman and the other for a copilot—that rotate to face the rest of the seating aft. In the cabin is V-shaped seating forward that can be converted to a berth.

Owners also have the option of adding a Seakeeper 3 gyrostabilizer and a full-length Bimini top to shade the cockpit.

MJM 35z

Greenline 39

Greenline Yachts ‘ vessels are aptly named for their environmentally friendly means of moving about; the Greenline 39 is no different. The Slovenian yacht manufacturer produces two types of this model: hybrid and solar.

If owners opt for the latter, the 39’s four solar panels atop the salon power all of the vessel’s systems for three hours. With the power of the sun, the 39 can achieve a max speed of 6.5 knots and a cruising speed of 4 knots. The hybrid type uses those same panels to help power a 220 hp Volvo Penta D3 with a Mahle electric-drive system. Owners have the option of replacing the standard engine with a 370 hp Yanmar 8LV diesel.

Belowdecks, scissor berths provide accommodations for long weekends.

The Fleming 65 was introduced in mid 2005 in response to a strong demand for an intermediate Fleming between the 55 and the 75. Her layout is very similar in concept to the 55 but the 65, being around 70% larger in displacement, offers much more interior and deck space than her smaller sibling. Fleming Yachts decided to retain hull number 1 (named Venture) to evaluate her design performance as a well-found cruising yacht as well as providing a test bed for new equipment. Since commissioning in 2005 Tony Fleming has cruised VENTURE more than 60,000 miles along the West Coast of North America from La Paz, Mexico to Juneau, Alaska, back down the Coast to the Sea of Cortez, to the Galapagos Islands, through the Panama Canal, up the East Coast into the Hudson River, Erie Canal and the St. Lawrence Seaway. Along the way Tony has provided the yard with valuable feedback and suggestions that have been incorporated in the 65 production line. Thanks to Tony's extensive testing and evaluation of these refinements, several new items are now available on production models.

We are very proud that a panel of thirteen judges from the Internationally respected 'Yachts' magazine voted the Fleming 65 best yacht in her class, worldwide, for 2006. As of January 2019, 51 Fleming 65's have been built at the highly regarded Tung Hwa yard in Taiwan, which has built every Fleming yacht since they were introduced in 1985.

Overview Continued...

As with all Flemings, special attention has been paid to the ease and safety in which the heavy duty ground tackle is set and retrieved. Originally designed for the Fleming 75, the 65's anchor platform is especially large and robust. The anchor platform accepts two 132 lbs. (60Kg) Ultra anchors, each of which can be controlled by a handheld unit at the platform or by windlass controls at both pilothouse and flying bridge stations. A pair of hydraulically powered Maxwell RC12 vertical windlasses with capstans are standard equipment, as is a 300ft (91m) length of Grade-60 stainless steel chain.

F65 Foredeck

There are port and starboard storage lockers to each side of the platform base, where salt and freshwater washdown  bibs are located as well as two, 50-amp shorepower inlets which are convenient when docking bow first.

A centerline hatch opens for access to the double chain locker, which is separated from the yacht's interior by a collision bulkhead. The locker can house two 300-foot (91m) lengths of anchor chain and several hundred feet of rode. It is also big enough to stow fenders and extra lines. It drains overboard just above the waterline, keeping the bilge clean and dry.

A teak caprail and oval shaped stainless steel handrail are standardl. To prevent damage during docking, the handrail is located slightly inboard of the bulwark. Moving aft, the cabin top features four built-in storage lockers, ideal for stowing lines and fenders. The lockers and the deck drains into specially designed, hidden manifolds, which exit just above the waterline, keeping the topside free of dark streaks.

Fleming also pays special attention to the number, position and size of its mooring cleats, and the F65 features four large cleats on both the port and starboard side forward of the deckhouse, making it easy to properly secure the yacht in a variety of situations. Teak or non-skid decking can be ordered for the foredeck. Convenient handrails are located on the forward coach roof, and together with the teak or stainless handrail above the bulwarks, it is safe to move along the foredeck in a seaway.

Protection against heavy weather is provided by the Portuguese Bridge, which features port and stbd gates for access between the foredeck and the side decks. Deck level LED courtesy lighting enhances safety after dark. The aft section of the Portuguese Bridge features built-in storage lockers for a variety of cruising gear.

One of Fleming's signature design features is its wide side decks that enable safe, sure-footed movement from bow to stern while at sea and during docking manoeuvres. Heavy duty, stainless steel handrails are strategically located to minimize risk of injury. For convenient, effortless boarding in a variety of situations, there are port and starboard boarding gates at both the high and low deck levels, for a total of four. For added convenience and safety, these gates open inboard.

Aft Deck and Swim Platform

The large cockpit space is beautifully finished with teak decking for its superior non-skid properties and sound dampening qualities. While many owners prefer to keep this space open for a variety of watersports activities, others use it as an outside dining area. A dining table can be ordered that follows the contour of the transom, with seating for 8.

Access to the area is via a boarding gate in the transom. Adjacent to the gate is a freshwater shower fitting as well as a saltwater washdown bib.

Optional engine and thruster controls can be located in the cockpit cabinet, making backing into a slip a simple procedure. Optional are two warping winches, which are invaluable when docking "Med" style. Two 50-amp CableMaster power cord systems are located in the transom, one on the port side, one starboard.

The engine room air intake vents are located under the port and stbd cockpit coamings to prevent salt spray from entering the engine room.

The flybridge is easily and safely accessed by the 5-step stairway from the pilothouse. The upper helm, located on the port side, is slightly raised to enhance visibility forward and features a Stidd double helm seat and a console for full instrumentation and electronics. A U-shaped settee with storage underneath and dining table that seats 6 is standard.

A number of different arrangements and equipment can be ordered, depending on the owner's intended use of the area. A large deep freeze, various types of barbecue grills, a wet bar, icemaker, refrigerator and extra seating are popular options.

Also optional is a hardtop with a canvas-glass enclosure, which creates additional all-weather living space. Aft of the flybridge area is the boat deck, with space for a 16-foot inflatable yacht tender. A 1,500-lb. (680kg) capacity Steelhead hydraulic davit system is standard as is a freshwater bib and 110 VAC (230 VAC for European version) outlet for keeping the tender's battery charged. The stainless steel safety rail has a removable section for launching a life raft. Typical of Fleming's obsessive attention to details, the boat deck drains to a series of built-in, stainless steel drains connected to a drain manifold system that exits just above the waterline to prevent streaking of the cabin sides and topsides.

Main Salon & Galley

The large, spacious main salon can be built with a number of different arrangements. A dedicated dining area can be located to starboard with a large settee area to port. In place of the dining area, a second settee can be located on the stbd side opposite the main settee. Or, a large, built-in cabinet can be built on the starboard side with lounge chairs facing the main settee.

A soft, synthetic leather headliner provides a sense of warmth and style, and there is space for a 42" TV on a powered tv lift.

In the aft, port corner, the owner has a choice of a wet bar with refrigerator and wine cooler or more cabinet space with glass doors. Wooden blinds recessed into the window frames are standard. LED lighting is used throughout, including on the inside of most cabinets.

The galley features a 21-cu. ft. side-by-side refrigerator/freezer on the starboard side and a built-in dish cabinet and pantry space. Granite counter tops, an undermount stainless steel double sink, instant hot water dispenser, waste disposal, convection microwave, and Miele induction cooktop are standard. There is room for an optional dishwasher.

Accommodations

A number of layouts are available for the 3-stateroom accommodations area. Most layouts feature a central passageway, which is just 4-steps down from the main salon area. A full beam master cabin layout is also available with access from the pilothosue.

In most cases, the owner's stateroom is located forward and features an island berth that lifts for easy storage beneath, a private head, and two large hanging lockers.

The port guest stateroom can be built with an island double berth, twins or a double with a pull out, single berth over it. Another option, as shown, is to include a pipe berth over the double. This stateroom shares a head with the second guest stateroom, although a 3-head arrangement is also available.

The starboard guest stateroom can be built with two over-under single berths or with one berth and a private head. A popular layout has the owner's cabin to port and a VIP stateroom forward.

A separate washer and dryer is located in the passageway along with a supply closet and slide-out laundry hamper. The entire accommodations area is finished in warm teak with a synthetic leather headliner.

Engine Room

Accessed from an exterior hatch aft of the salon doors that leads to a submarine-style door, the engine room is signature Fleming - well thought out, extremely functional and beautifully finished. Standard power is a pair of MAN i6-800 hp diesel engines, and MAN V8-1,000 HP engines are optional. There is room for two  generators, and most owners choose to install two, one with a smaller output for use during moderate power requirements and one larger unit when more power is called for.

To achieve the extremely low sound and vibration that Flemings are well known for, the Aquadrive system isolates the engine and transmission from the propeller thrust, permitting the use of much softer engine mounts. Aquadrive is fitted as standard and their rotating couplings are concealed beneath fiberglass covers for safety. The engine mounts are installed on full-length, polished stainless steel channel sections, a system that has been standard on all Flemings since their inception in 1985.

An intelligently designed and meticulously executed fuel management system takes all the guesswork out of transferring fuel and making sure each engine is being properly fed. The system makes it impossible to overfill a tank by switching a fuel return valve the wrong way.

The arrangement of all mechanical systems has been done with the need for proper maintenance in mind. Every piece of equipment is accessible, and there are places for mechanics to stand and place their tools without damaging vital gear. An optional engine room air conditioning system is available, a detail that will not go unnoticed by the vessel's mechanic.

The aft lazarette houses the water tanks, steering gear and air conditioning compressors while also leaving ample room for storing cruising gear such as spare anchors, rode, lines, fenders and parts.

Main access is through the outside engine room hatch and down a set of curved stainless and teak steps. There are two additional cockpit hatches that allow quick access to stowed gear. Two freshwater pumps are installed and plumbed, providing instant switchover capability in case of failure.

The Fleming 65 pilothouse is the nerve center of the vessel and can be completely separated from the activities throughout the rest of the yacht by its bi-panel teak door. The day head to starboard can also be ordered as a "wet-head" complete with shower, and an insert for the settee creates a convenient watch berth. This arrangement allows the pilothouse to be used as an extra cabin when necessary. Either one or two Stidd helm chairs can be installed, and a raised settee and table provide additional seating for four.

The forward console area has been designed to accommodate a full array of today's modern electronics, and easy accessibility has been built in to allow for service and eventual upgrades. The electrical distribution panels are below the main controls and are hinged and illuminated for access and service.

Visibility forward and to port and stbd is excellent, and two sliding doors open to the wide side decks. A traditional teak and holly sole is standard. There are large drawers and working space for charts, cruising books, navigation instruments, binoculars, cell phones and chargers, log books, flashlights and everything else a captain needs to chart and follow a safe course. A large stainless steel and teak-trimmed destroyer steering wheel fits the ambience of this ultimate cruising yacht.

There is an ongoing process at Fleming Yachts to constantly refine our designs and incorporate improvements to each and every vessel we build. By focusing on a limited number of models Flemings have become known as "The Ultimate Cruising Yachts" We invite you to see a Fleming up close at one of our dealers or to visit us at one of the many boat shows we attend. Our advanced toolkit

Carbon tech_0000_Fly-60

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

Azimut_TF_Zipwake-Automatic-Interceptor

Automated interceptors optimize the trim at every speed to maintain ideal hydrodynamics for performance and efficiency, at the same time negating any lateral imbalance due to sidewinds or weight distribution. With the pilot’s peace of mind assured, the driving experience is simpler and more enjoyable.

Azimut_TF_Timoneria-elettronica-EPS

At the helm, the innovative Optimus Electronic Power Steering system by Seastar Solutions gives you a similar sensation to driving a top of the range car. The steering sensitivity and resistance can be linked to speed, enhacing the pilot’s control in every situation. The system also has the additional benefit of eliminating the hydraulic piping between the helm station and the rudder compartment.

best yacht under 60 feet

The Jeanneau 54 is a new yacht model that enters the Jeanneau Yachts luxury sailboat range, on the same level as the Jeanneau Yachts 64. This new model is largely inspired by its predecessor, the Jeanneau 53. The same quality-price ratio is maintained, you can find this model from 440 000€.

This sailing yacht is characterized by a powerful hull and better performance than her sistership of similar size. In addition, she has a sleeker design compared to previous models. Moreover, she offers a cockpit twice as spacious as other models of comparable size on the market. It is divided into several areas: navigation, relaxation, and maneuvering areas. Furthermore, this new yacht is equipped with a rear platform called ‘the terrace’ whose design has been patented by the manufacturer. This one has the particularity of being larger.

The Jeanneau 54 is designed to meet the requirements of customers. She is available in several versions with various levels of customization: 2-cabin, 3-cabin, 4-cabin and even 5-cabin versions. According to the shipyard, the Jeanneau 54 is mainly designed for customers in Northern Europe.

Best cruising yacht under 15m : Oceanis 46.1

best yacht under 60 feet

In terms of design, the Oceanis 46.1 was largely inspired by the 51.1, but is distinguished by the combination of elegance and power. She also has the famous stepped hull of the 51.1, characterized by its wider shape, offering a larger interior. As for the deck, it adopts an architectural shape with a more spacious cockpit compared to the same size models found on the market. The large table inside the cockpit can accommodate up to 8 people. It cleverly houses the BIB. Also, the Oceanis 46.1 is distinguished by its winches grouped at the helm station, which facilitate maneuvering and create a beautiful space for relaxation at the same time.

The new yacht is designed for fast cruising enthusiasts, as it offers great speed and guaranteed sensations.

Best performance: The sailing monohull Dehler 30 One Design

best yacht under 60 feet

It is characterized by its carbon mast set back and also by the presence of an intermediate stay between the masthead and the spreader.

The cockpit is designed so that the crew can work in comfort and freedom. It is equipped with a soft non-slip surface and a long central footrest. Also of note is a dedicated survival storage compartment.

Among the novelties of the Dehler 30 One Design, note that it has an outrigger that serves to spread the asymmetrical spinnaker pull point. This provides an additional maneuver to adjust the spinnaker draft point. The setting and removal of this adjustment is not complicated during a race.

In addition, the Bavaria Cruiser 46 has quality rigging and fittings with Lewmar winches and Spinlock blockers on the roof. These elements allow two people to easily steer the boat. As for the interior, this model has a modular navigation area consisting of a cockpit table. This is equipped with a tray that resembles a desk for the storage of instruments, charts or electrical panel.

Offering direct access to the sea thanks to a transom that opens entirely onto a large bathing platform and she is equipped with four electric winches in the cockpit, which allows the crew to easily steer the boat.

Princess Yachts F55 Wins Best Flybridge Up To 60 Feet Award

Princess Yachts F55 Award Winner

The Princess Yachts F55 Flybridge has won the award for "Best Flybridge Up To 60 Feet" presented by Motor Boat and Yachting Magazine. Described by MBY as the "real bread and butter for the (Princess Yachts) yard", the F55 simply does everything right.

Delighted to announce that the Princess F55 has won the @mbymagazine award for best Flybridge up to 60ft. #MotorBoatAwards #experiencetheexceptional pic.twitter.com/ixbC9mlMeo — Princess Yachts (@_PrincessYachts) May 8, 2019

The Princess Yachts 55 Flybridge won despite stiff competition in its class against the Azimut 55, Galeon 360 Fly and 460 Fly, and the Sealine F430. The MBY Awards are "the only marine awards with the motor boat buyers' best interests at heart," according to their website. The awards are judged purely on the design, ability, and value for money amongst their peers in the same size and class. "This is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that goes into every Princess Yacht ," said Jay Hendrix , Vice President of SI Yachts. "We receive a lot of interest in 50 to 60 foot Princess Yachts, it's definitely a popular segment for the brand."

(Seen below: A video review of the Princess 55 by Motor Boat & Yachting)

Princess made sure the F55 was just as much focused on entertainment as it is on cruising accommodations. The aft cockpit on the Princess 55 Flybridge is just one of those places on board that guests seem to congregate around. The teak swim platform is hydraulic and lowers into the water for easy off-boarding, scuba diving, and simply relaxing at the water's edge. The flybridge overhang provides shade to the sitting area on the cockpit. This space features a comfortable couch and table for outside dining and connects to the galley and salon when the aft doors are completely open.

Princess 55 Flybridge aft cockpit space

The galley onboard the Princess F55 is placed aft for convenient serving to the outside cockpit. With the aft doors open and the galley window up, the entire salon and cockpit are fully connected created a wonderful open and sunshine-filled layout. Everything you need to entertain guests for a night cruise or feed your crew during an extended voyage is in the galley including the best appliances and an abundance of storage.

aft galley on the Princess 55 Flybridge

The dining space on the F55 is up a few steps from the galley which provides a small, but nice separation between the two spaces without cutting them off. The dining area has room for 8 guests and is across from a second couch that sits in front of a hidden flat-screen television. Two comfortable seats are stationed at the helm placed starboard.

Dining area on board the princess f55

The lower deck of the Princess F55 features 3 large staterooms and 3 heads. As you can see below, the VIP stateroom and the third guest cabin share a head, while the full-beam master suite has its own. The VIP features a large double berth with lots of storage space.

Princess F55 lower deck layout

The master suite also features a large double berth with room to walk around either side. There is a dressing table, a wardrobe closet with shelves, drawers under the bed, and additional storage lockers. The hull-side windows and hatches provide plenty of lower deck natural light and ventilation.

60 foot yacht: a guide to buying your next yacht.

  • November 19, 2018

Boaters often look to make the move from a smaller vessel to a 60 foot yacht when they seek to expand the possible boating excursions available to them. While simple day outings remain doable, yachts in this size range also offer the ability to travel further, the option to host more guests and the enjoyment of a myriad of amenities.

A yacht in the 60 foot range is also approaching the upper end of the owner/operator range as most owners in the 70 foot and up range typically do not operate the yacht themselves.

Buying a 60 foot yacht likely involves more decisions than a smaller vessel. For instance, the larger the vessel, the more important build quality becomes. Additionally, yacht type, cruising speed and yacht propulsion should all be considered. We’ll cover each of these items in this guide.

60 foot yacht

A 60 foot yacht can come in a number of different types and identifying your desired yacht type is a great starting point. While yacht type nomenclature can vary in different parts of the world, we’ll stick to the broader classification of an express yacht versus a flybridge yacht.

The express yacht (sometimes referred to as express cruiser or sports cruiser) refers to a yacht with a single deck above the hull and living space below. These yachts are often sporty and sleek looking.

Within the express category, the vessels can vary further. For example, a “Mediterranean” style yacht can often be referred to as an open express yacht and is characterized by maximum space for sun and little to no shade on the deck. The open express is contrasted with a typical hard top express which typically offers a semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space for the operator.

While the express yacht emphasizes a two-deck layout, the flybridge yacht (sometimes referred to as a sedan bridge or a sport bridge) is a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck, often with seating and a control station. Due to the flybridge above, the main deck on these vessels often includes an enclosed space and living quarters below.

The flybridge space can be open air or enclosed and can include a hard top depending on the yacht.

Yacht Propulsion

As you make investment decision regarding your new or used 60 foot yacht, it’s important to consider the propulsion types available today.

Most boat owners are familiar with inboard propulsion. Straight shaft inboard propulsion is the traditional form of propulsion you’ll find in boating. It involves a rear-facing engine connected to a transmission and a driftshaft that comes out of the bottom of the boat. V-drive inboard yachts have forward facing motors, positioned further back, with a transmission that redirects the driveshaft toward the back of the vessel. With the engines further back in the V-drive systems, interior cabin space can be further maximized.

Pod drive propulsion is the alternative to shaft drive propulsion, and since the  Volvo Penta pod drive system  debuted back in 2005, yacht owners have been intrigued by the benefits that such systems offer. Pod drives are a power system that is without shafts, struts and rudders. Instead of a traditional shaft-based system, one or more self-contained “pods” transfer the engine’s power into thrust.

60 foot yacht pods

The main benefits of a pod drive system are better fuel economy, increased handling and performance, less noise, less vibration, joystick docking and position fixing. It’s important to note that pod drive systems are typically more expensive and require certified technicians for servicing. With that said, however, with enough use, the fuel savings gained by using the pod system can, at least in part, make up for the additional investment that pod drive systems require.

Should you find yourself with additional questions regarding pod drive systems or other propulsion systems, please feel free to ask questions to our experienced yacht brokers.

New or Used?

Choosing between a new and used 60 foot yacht is another major consideration as you plan your purchase. A new build obviously comes with a higher price tag, but the features, amenities and configuration can be tailored to your exact desires. Moreover, a new build offers the opportunity to include all the latest technology that might be available in the yacht industry.

Whether purchasing a new or a used yacht, Tom George Yacht Group can help you acquire the perfect vessel for you, your family and your lifestyle. Below are some of the featured new yachts that Tom George Yacht Group can offer in this size range. Additionally, you can  browse the available used yachts on the market by clicking here .

The 70-80 foot market continues to be a strong market with several recent sales. Here’s a breakdown of a few of the top yachts to consider between 70 and 80 feet in length that are attracting buyers to the table.

Ocean Alexander Galley

Ocean Alexander 78 Yacht

The 2012 Ocean Alexander 78 ALEXANDRA represents one of the finest motor yachts in her class with less than 400 original hours, Zero Speed Trac stabilizers finished off with a stunning Destry Darr Interior. Powered by twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT engines (Approx. 397 hrs), she carries a three-stateroom layout plus crew quarters, making for an ideal cruising yacht, whether for an owner operator or crewed yacht. The previous owners transitioned from a a 62’ Ocean Alexander, falling in love with the spacious layout in the bigger 78′ model that could accommodate cruising requirements in Southern waters like Florida and on Lake Michigan in Chicago. This particular Azimut 75 is a great example of a well maintained boat cared for by professionals. A crew of two have been aboard full time since first delivery and it shows. Dark stained wood and cream leather highlight the modern and spacious interior. She’s an example of a yacht that is just as stylish in Monaco as it is in Miami. Lazzara 75 LSX Sport Yacht

One of five 75 Lazzaras currently on the market, this 2007 model is the nicest available. New paint in 2010 and fresh varnish on her aft cap rails really set her apart from her competition. The galley down arrangement is very unique in that it gets natural light from the windshield. Her quad Volvo IPS 600s power this Lazzara 75 to 27 knot cruise speed. Tip: We recently listed a 116′ Lazzara for sale that will appeal to buyers who wish to move up to higher length ranges in the future. In 2014, the owners spent over $250,000 to keep her in ‘mint’ condition. _________________________________________________________________________________ More research: Review Similar Yachts | Lazarra Reviews & Articles

Best Trawler Yacht Brands for Bluewater Adventures

16th nov 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

The rise of the trawler yacht is one of the most exciting developments in the boating industry in decades. It has opened the world of long-range travel to those who don’t care to sail and whose budget doesn’t run to a superyacht or explorer yacht. It has actually filled a gap that we didn’t even realize we desperately needed. Imagine being able to cruise the world in comfort on a yacht under 60 feet, or even under 40 feet. Or being able to cruise across blue water, with several guests staying aboard, to far-flung destinations on a yacht the size of a cabin cruiser.

Trawler yachts are almost an oxymoron—the idea of a sturdy and functional fishing trawler being a luxury yacht would once have been laughable. But today that’s exactly what these robust, spacious, and elegant long-range cruisers are. Here we take a look at our pick of some of the best trawler yacht brands on the market;

13 Best Liveaboard Sailboats (under 30 & 50 ft)

Choosing a boat to live on is a big deal — something you definitely want to get right. There are plenty of options to pick from, which can make the choosing process a bit daunting. So to help you navigate those deep waters (no pun intended), here is an article summarizing the 13 best liveaboard sailboats under 30 and 50 feet.

best yacht under 60 feet

So what are the 13 best liveaboard sailboats?

Catalina 30, pacific seacraft flicka 20, nonsuch ultra 30, aventura 34, island packet 35, peterson 44, prout snowgoose 37, gulfstar 44, beneteau oceanis 50.

Beautiful lineup, isn't it? Let me explain what makes these so special.

Picking the Right One Matters

Picking a liveaboard sailboat belongs among those kinds of decisions that require months, if not years of research and testing.

It is not like choosing a car - those are more or less the same, and although they vary widely in terms of comfort, feeling, and performance, rarely you would encounter one that wouldn't get you from point A to B reasonably.

The same goes for a house or an apartment. Regardless of if you get a 200 square foot condo or a 30,000 square feet mansion, it will most of the time provide a warm shelter with a shower and a kitchen and a bed, fulfilling its basic functions.

But this is only the case because there is extensive infrastructure in place helping cars and houses. A car can only get you from A to B thanks to roads. A house can only have a shower and a kitchen if it is connected to a grid.

But on a boat, you are on your own.

best yacht under 60 feet

The sea doesn't adjust its waves for your comfort. If something breaks, there is usually not a repair shop nearby. You aren't always connected to water or electricity. And if you don't like what you see around yourself, it's not like you can just leave.

So a liveaboard boat needs to provide what a house does, what a vehicle does, and more, plus it needs to provide this regardless of if you are docked in a marina or in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. That is a lot to ask, especially if we are talking about boats around 30 or 50 feet.

Fortunately, every single boat on this list is an all-star that ticks all the right boxes. Let's see why.

best yacht under 60 feet

I know, I hear you, it isn't exciting enough as it doesn't perform that well. Sure. But we are talking about a boat that is supposed to be a house too. So why is it on the list?

This boat has been in production since 1975, which means that it has been extraordinarily well-refined according to the suggestions of thousands of owners. And this manufacturer is known for listening to the sailors' feedback. It is a very popular model, so finding spare parts for it will always be easy. Its famous well thought through the salon, and cabin layout is generous and spacious, so Catalinas are comfortable boats to live on. Plus, the boat has quite a wide beam, great ballast/displacement ratio as well as low sail area/displacement ratio, making it a stiff boat under sail, which adds to stability and comfort.

Good condition MkIII Catalinas can be found for about $35,000, but given the volume of these on the market, you can find a usable one even for around $15,000.

This one is a hero. I'd be hesitant to call such a small boat a comfortable liveaboard if it wasn't for this model. For its size, the interior is very spacious. It is also made for comfort since it seems to be inspired by the aforementioned Catalina 30. In fact, after reading some reviews, I am confident in saying that you will not find a significantly more comfortable 27 footer out there.

It also has a talent very uncommon for liveaboard boats - you can put it on a trailer, which can make your life easier when it comes to certain trips. But most importantly, it is a beauty. Just look at it.

Pricing this boat is a tricky task. You can buy nearly new ones (2015) for around $140,000, but even for $50,000, you can stumble upon models from both the 80s and the 2000s. This means the condition is a big factor, and you gotta inspect your choice well. The good news is that whatever your price in that range, you will find a boat for that money. The bad news is that the cheaper you go, the more effort will the potential repairs take.

I thought the Nor'Sea 27 is gonna be it, but let's push the size limit even more with the 20 foot Flicka, this tiny, towable, but seaworthy beast that accomplished several circumnavigations. Upon entering, you will be amazed at how spacious and equipped with amenities the interior is. Its designer lived on this boat with his partner (who too was a naval architect) for years and cruised all around the world - and what a proof of confidence in his own design that is.

Truth be told, there is a lack of deck space, but underneath it has the comfort and size of a boat a few meters larger, a space you can comfortably live in. Due to its size, it is easy to operate, tow, and sails better than what you would expect from a boat this length.

This boat is incredibly charming, and so its owners rarely sell it. In fact, it has amassed quite a following since it was designed into existence. So expect to spend quite some time searching for one for sale. Once you do find one, it will cost you around $30,000 - $40,000.

This one's a weird one. But because of it, a very spacious one. It is structured as a catboat, that is, with the mast being all the way on the front of the boat, which makes for impressive space below the deck. It has all the necessary amenities, including a shower, so for the liveaboard lifestyle, this boat definitely deserves to make this list.

The single sail catboat design also means it is easy to handle single-handed, which makes for great solitary passages.

Expect to pay around $40,000 to $60,000 for this one.

Though I am trying to keep this list in lower price ranges, I have to put this one in. If you don't mind the price tag of around $170,000, this boat is marketed as the currently cheapest liveaboard catamaran. As previously mentioned, cats offer the most in terms of space, and this model is a brand new one. Thus when it comes to service troubles and costs, you wouldn't pay much. The look is modern, relatively minimalistic and sleek, so for those of you who would like to give the liveaboard lifestyle a go but get cold feet upon seeing boats from the 80s, this is a way to make sure things remain stylish.

The modernity, space, and attention to practicality when it comes to using this as your home, make this a great entry-level liveaboard choice.

Again, this is no performance vehicle. Rather it focuses on the usual cruiser aspects - space, stability, sturdiness, and convenience, which makes it an ideal candidate for your choice when looking for a new floating home. Aside from the spacious interior, this boat also has an unusually large cockpit, great for those lunches on the deck.

As if the designers knew this might be used by the liveaboard people, this boat is easy to handle, which means even under sail, you won't have issues focusing on what you came for in the first place - sea living.

This boat can be found on the market for around $75,000 - $100,000.

The great thing about the Hunter 33 is that it was designed as more of a house than a sailboat. The attention to accommodation details is great here; there is plenty of space for sleeping the owners as well as the occasional visitors, it has a fantastic headroom throughout the boat and one of the most spacious and comfortable dining spaces seen on boats this size.

Food preparation and consumption was probably high on the priority list of the makers; the kitchen has an L shape, which adds to the convenience.

The price spread on these is quite large, with the bottom around $55,000 for the 2004 models and the top around $95,000 for the 2013 models.

This one is for those who don't mind sacrificing luxury for space. If in the middle of the ocean, it makes sense that one would want as much of usable space as possible, so if you are okay with the simplicity that will inevitably come with a system like this, you have found your match.

An undeniable advantage of such a design approach is that the storage space is maximized. Long passages with the need for plenty of room for equipment and provisions won't be a problem here. The simplicity of this boat is not just in terms of design, but even the electrics and plumbing. Thus if something breaks, you will have an easier time fixing it.

This being an older model, you can get your hands on one for around $30,000.

Since we are mostly looking at cheaper boats here, most of them aren't new - in fact, they likely have quite a few years behind them. The build quality is thus important. You want to go for builds that will last. Peterson is known for this, so it's gotta be on the list. As far as this list goes, it is quite a large boat. Moreover, it is one that has been built with spaciousness in mind, both when it comes to living spaces and storage.

A neat thing about this boat is its attention to performance. It isn't a racer; rather, it fits in the performance cruiser category, but they haven't made too many speed-related compromises here.

Peterson 44 can usually be found for $80,000 - $100,000.

There needs to be a catamaran on this list - they are, by definition, more spacious than monohulls, providing a large living area, which is, of course, an attractive characteristic for a liveaboard boat. Especially if they have a solid bridge deck, creating yet more square feet of usable space, which Snowgoose has. Unfortunately, they tend to be costly. While it is easy to recommend a bunch of half a million dollar cats, to make this list more within reach of the average sailor, I've found this beauty that you can get for around $100,000.

Aside from the extra space, this model is a true bluewater cruiser, meaning you won't be limited by its abilities when planning your journeys.

Those of you who had the pleasure of sailing this boat know why it needs to be here. It was built for a liveaboard lifestyle. Its wide body makes for one spacious interior which is well ventilated, (a very important aspect) with a beautiful galley and it has a large aft cabin with a huge bed. It was made with comfort, practicality, and convenience in mind.

Not to sound like a salesman, but believe me when I say this boat is a genuine pleasure to be on. If you want the homey feeling, you don't get much closer than this in this size range.

Expect to pay around $80,000 - $100,000 for this one, though some digging around and 'fixing her up' can knock this number down significantly.

This is another easy choice, space being the reason. Not only does it have an extra-large main cabin and salon with a kitchen, many small Parisian apartments could envy, but it is also very generous in terms of storage space. Stocking up for longer crossings will be a pleasure on this one.

Also, it was built as a racer-cruiser, so you won't be making many compromises in terms of performance, as is often the case with comfortable boats.

All of this comes for a price, though. You might be able to find one for around $100,000 if you put some time into your search and won't mind a bit of travel to see it, but otherwise, the average price is around $130,000.

Let's end this list by stretching the ceiling too with this fifty-footer. It was designed as a holiday cruiser, and it is a popular choice among charter companies. The designers know that there are places in Europe where it is very easy to get a sailing license, so many inexperienced people who don't want to give up the comforts of their home end up on these boats. Oceanis 50 is thus comfortable, spacious, easy to sail, and the attention to accommodation details, amenities, and practicality, is very high.

As such, it is designed to house whole families, so if you live there as a couple, you will have a floating house for yourself, and if kids come, no need to buy a new boat. Even on the deck, this boat is designed for pleasure cruises, so as far as that goes, you will be taken care of. As far as their seaworthiness goes, some consider Beneteau an entry-level holiday brand, and some models are indeed more designed for coastal hopping than large crossings. But that can be fixed with some proper fitting.

If you fancy a new one, you will find yourself paying above the $500,000 mark, but older models start a bit above $100,000. Which is something a person who just sold all their possessions to escape to the sea is more likely to have. Just be a bit careful with boats sold by charter companies. Their previous owners serviced them regularly, but you can be sure the hundreds of sailors that touched the helm weren't necessarily skilled or kind to them.

So there you have it. $15,000 - $50,0000 range, 20 - 50-foot sizes, from cozy towable boats to large sailing houses. A range anybody can choose from to pursue the liveaboard dream. Nothing is stopping you now, so hit the yachtworld.com website and start browsing.

Know though that if you really want to take advantage of the boat market, you might have to travel quite a bit. If you are an American, the strong dollar will make it enticing to look for a boat in European countries without the EUR currency. Or you might find plenty of cheap models in Turkey, for instance. It requires more effort, but in return, it might save you tens of thousands of dollars.

Fair winds!

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.
