Mooloolaba Yacht Club clubhouse opening

A large crowd celebrated on Saturday the rich 56-year-old history of Mooloolaba Yacht Club and its opportunities for growth into the future with the opening of its new clubhouse.

It’s been a long road for the club to reach this point in its journey to establishing a solid base for growth at Mooloolaba Marina.

The MYC commodore, Tanya Kelly, spoke at the opening of the club’s resilience and friendship, it’s spirit of grit and volunteerism, and its “fight against the odds”.

“Whether it is one of our sailors competing hard in a regatta or a fighting for survival, it’s the people who make the club, and that’s the story of Mooloolaba Yacht Club,” she added.

Acknowledging the official opening of the clubhouse with a ribbon cutting ceremony was Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson MP, helped by club co-founder Hayden Kenny and Ms Kelly.

The function attracted a large crowd of current and former club members along with representatives of other Coast sailing clubs, kite foiling, Sailability, Saltwater Veterans, Marina businesses, the Sunshine Coast Council, Australian Sailing and the Mooloolaba Marina.

Ms Kelly was effusive in her thanks to the board of the Marina who worked closely with the club board to make it possible for the MYC to find its home in the marina’s club precinct area.

The club’s new home is located adjacent to the Sailability and Mooloolaba Outrigger site, on the waterside of Mooloolaba Marina.

“Many parts of the building have been built by the members of the MYC” Ms Kelly said. They have created a meeting and social area that will support the club into the future as its membership base builds.

There is no time to rest for the club board and its members. After recently delivering the nationally recognised Mooloolaba Women’s Keelboat Regatta, it has only three weeks to prepare for the 25th Etchells Australasian Championship which is expected to attract over 30 entries from across Australia.

Other programs that will continue to be supported by the club are its offshore races, Discover Sailing for new sailors and the further development of its youth keelboat sailing program.

“We have a steely and optimistic focus on the future; we have big dreams and big ambitions,” Ms Kelly added.

Sunshine Coast

Yacht club celebrates re-opening.

MOOLOOLABA Marina will celebrate the power of hard work and vision today when it officially re-opens a clubhouse that has languished unused for five years.

Chairman of directors John Mackay will celebrate the re-opening of the Mooloolaba Yacht Club today. Picture: John McCutcheon

Don't miss out on the headlines from Sunshine Coast. Followed categories will be added to My News.

The surprisingly miserly amount of $65,000 coupled with the sweat of a hardcore of 20 volunteers has given the premises a makeover that has at least corrected some of the neglect that followed an era of bitter court battles and near financial disaster.

However, when marina board chairman John McKay declares the refurbished premises open it will be only the first step in efforts to make the venue a beacon of activity in east coast sailing circles.

He said work completed to date had included re-screwing, sealing and painting of the roof, external and internal painting, a new water supply main from the street, extensive internal and external electrics, three washroom area renovations, rain water leak repairs, plumbing repairs and reconstruction of the external balcony stairs .

The refurbished building has already hosted Jessica Watson’s homecoming, the arrival of the Tour De Cure ride for cancer and the Trans Tasman solo yacht race presentation dinner.

It is also attracting advance bookings for functions and, through the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club’s licence, also has a bar operating 25 hours a week.

Mr McKay said the efforts of volunteers in re-roofing and water proofing the building and repainting the exterior and interior walls had been humbling.

Two-berth owner Keith Baker and his non-member mate Ian Richards had painted nearly the entire downstairs interior of the building on their own.

The restoration of the clubhouse, which just over a year ago had several centimetres of mould growing on sodden carpet, may provide physical proof of better times, but it is the company’s balance sheet that has the chairman smiling.

A combination of marina berth sales and what he hopes will be a once-off levy on members has reduced a $2.3 million interest only loan to $350,000 and also put $500,000 of operating capital in the bank.

Mr McKay said the intention long-term was to lease the building in its entirety to a commercial tenant or to lease it in part for functions, a restaurant and bar.

“I can’t believe how well people have pulled together,” he said.

The celebrations start at 4pm and will include model boat races and, Mr McKay hopes after all the hard work of the past nine months, a lot of fun.

Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta & Brisbane to Sunshine Coast

yacht club mooloolaba sunshine coast

May 21, 2021

Entries are now flowing in for both the Sunshine Coast Ocean Regatta and its feeder race Brisbane to Sunshine Coast. SCYC Members and their families are excited about welcoming this year’s fleet of competing yachts on the Sunshine Coast. The annual Regatta in  mid-July 2021 is generating a lot of interest amongst yachts going north for the Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island regattas.

Some Yacht owners without the time this year to sail to north Queensland for the tropical regattas are favouring SCOR 2021 on the Sunshine Coast.

Registrations are open for boats in divisions IRC/ORCi, AMS and PHS – Monohulls and Multihulls.  With an entry fee of just $100 (including for multiple Divisions) SCOR 2021 is proving to be attractive to many boat owners. There will be a series of up to 6 races conducted over two days: Sat 17th and Sun 18th July, 2021. In addition to “around the buoy” races, there will be longer races which will make use of fixed navigation marks such as the Gneerings cardinal mark and the Mooloolaba Waverider Buoy.

A number of yachts from the Brisbane area have been missing good local ocean racing during the “Covid year” and plan to do the B2SC  from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast on 16 July as a feeder race to the SCOR 2021 regatta. This race leaves from Queensland Cruising Yacht Club at Shorncliff to Sunshine Coast Yacht Club at Mooloolaba. The B2SC 2021 will include IRC, AMS and PHS divisions and also, for the first time, will feature a short-handed division (2 sailors per boat) to cater for boats favouring this format which is becoming increasingly popular, nationally and globally. The entry fee for B2SC is $20; with trophies and prizes to a value of $1,000.

Skippers from past SCOR regattas are telling the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club that they will be back in 2021 to enjoy the relaxed but competitive sailing with true open waters racing off the much-loved Sunshine Coast. They are also looking forward to meeting new sailors at the social events organised for the regatta.

Registration for both events is now open with the Notices of Race and Entry Forms on the website at https://scor.com.au/

Entries can be sent/emailed to the SCYC Regatta Office, together with the relevant documentation and entry fees:

UPDATED: A Mooloolaba Marina representative says the marina did not request an increase in rent from the Sunshine Coast Yacht Club, which had cited increasing rental costs and a lack of members as reasons for its closure.

Marina company secretary Kerri Smith said, via a belated response to Sunshine Coast News, that the club was “offered a smaller premises on the site at the same rental rate, which would have reduced their rental expense, however they declined citing falling member numbers.”

“I can assure you there was definitely no increase in SCYC’s rent.”

The yacht club had earlier said an increase an increase in rent, combined with falling numbers of members, had forced their hand.

EARLIER: One Sunshine Coast yacht club has sunk while another has changed tack at Mooloolaba Spit.

The 17-year-old Sunshine Coast Yacht Club has keeled over after it couldn’t pay a “significant increase” in rent at the Mooloolaba Marina.

Meanwhile, the 56-year-old Mooloolaba Yacht Club has found some stability, by moving into a modest home at the facility.

For the members of the former, it was a “sad decision” to de-register the club and close its doors.

“Unfortunately, the catalyst for our decision was a request from the marina to vacate our current premises and move into a small demountable,” the club’s management committee said via social media last month.

“We were due for our three-yearly rent review, which resulted in a significant increase in our monthly rent.

“We have therefore agreed to vacate the premises by June 30.

“It would not be practical to move into the unsuitable alternative building.”

yacht club mooloolaba sunshine coast

The club had tried several initiatives to try to stay afloat but was unsuccessful.

“We have suffered reduced membership rates and involvement in recent years, resulting in financial stress,” the committee said.

“Many factors have contributed to this, (including) the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing issues surrounding the river bar conditions, along with a general decline in keelboat club sailing in many regions.”

The Mooloolaba Yacht Club, which has a much stronger supporter base, found a permanent home, after months of uncertainty.

Their lease ended at the nearby The Wharf last year and the club moved into a temporary base at the marina before securing a lease for a demountable there.

MYC commodore Tanya Kelly spoke of the club’s resilience and friendship and its “fight against the odds” at a recent opening of the clubhouse.

“Whether it is one of our sailors competing hard in a regatta or a fighting for survival, it’s the people who make the club, and that’s the story of Mooloolaba Yacht Club,” she said.

yacht club mooloolaba sunshine coast

Ms Kelly thanked the board of the marina, which worked closely with the board of the club to make it possible for them to find a home in the precinct.

“Many parts of the building have been built by the members of the MYC,” she said.

“They have created a meeting and social area that will support the club into the future as its membership base builds.”

Sunshine Coast News has contacted the Mooloolaba Marina for comment but is yet to receive a response.

The State Government, represented by the Department of Transport and Main Roads, owns, and manages the site that includes the marina.

It is formally known as the Mooloolaba State Harbour.

A spokesperson said state ownership of the harbour enabled TMR to “provide safe and efficient all-tide access for recreational and commercial vessels.”

yacht club mooloolaba sunshine coast

They also said the harbour allowed TMR “to facilitate investment and development, to support and promote sustainable recreational and commercial boating activities and the maritime industry.”

TMR said they have a lease in place with Sunshine Coast Aquatic Centre Pty Ltd (SCAC) for their exclusive use and operation of their business in the Mooloolaba State Boat Harbour.

TMR said that details of TMRs commercial leasing arrangement with SCAC was commercial and in-confidence and that all sub-leasing arrangements “are a matter for SCAC.”

TMR said it was investigating options for the future of the harbour.

“As part of the ongoing management of Mooloolaba State Boat Harbour, we are investigating potential future strategic planning activities to ensure it continues to support and promote sustainable recreational and commercial boating activities and the maritime industry.”
