Secure harbor for your yacht

Safe harbor for pulling in for the night. Warm (not hot) showers, clean facilities, friendly staff. Restaurants and shops within walking distance. For a few bucks more than a BoatyBall, you can have a secure slip and quality facilities. Spent one night with a 45' Lagoon Catamaran sailboat and had no issues.

Excellent facility for stops ($15/hour). Stay in middle of channel approaching; excellent docking assistance. Piers, etc. in good condition. Limited on-site but market very close for reprovision (and very nice, accommodating service).

We were moored on reserved BVI Ball number 2 and were struck in the middle of the night by a transport ship which had been moored on a nearby red ball after we went to sleep. BVI balls number 1 and 2 appear to be at equal risk for this to occur. Do not use these balls!

virgin gorda yacht harbour photos

We were travelling in a catamaran and stopped for the night on the mooring ball. Harbour was pretty busy and had strong waves. It did not feel too comfortable, but it gave us good start for the Baths in the morning. We left in the early pm to Anegada.

We made the decisive to stop here since the weather was not good. The staff was friendly and helpful, fuel prices were reasonable, and the boat slip was just fine. Great, protected harbor and a nice place to shut down the brain, relax at the dock, dodge the weather. Great location with nearby car rental that is cheaper than getting a taxi all the time. I have stayed here before and will happily do so again. Dock, fuel, power and water is all fine after the 2017 hurricane. The nearby building are under construction and will hopefully re-open this year. We walked to a nearby car rental and then toured the island. Great place, great memories, great photos. Thanks for your help - Harbor Master Hanna from Texas. Captain Jerry of the Caribbean, now back in Texas.

We put into YH during the weekend of January 10. Andrew met us dockside to provide line assistance. Hannah and Jeremy provided courteous and helpful office assistance and were genuinely nice people to know. The newly built reception center should have been opened already but apparently had an occupancy inspection setback that has delayed that opening. For the immediate present, toilet facilities are underwhelming and shower facilities are dismal; both were co-ed But, with patience and allowance for circumstance we managed to get and stay clean. Water and electric (both metered at fair prices) were available dockside. The water quality was exceptional. Our visit coincided with an exceptionally windy (090 at 28-35 kts) period. We came in to stay one night but were satisfied enough with the venue to stay the second night as well. Taxis were generally available on-site during the day; in the evening the security woman (pleasant, personable and courteous) proactively called for taxi service. Overall our party of six had no significant issues and it should get better fairly quickly, island-time notwithstanding.

Guide to Virgin Gorda

A dream destination for hikers and snorkelers

At the eastern end of the British Virgin Islands chain, Virgin Gorda is the quintessential Caribbean idyll, a wild green gem framed by white sandy beaches and home to the geological wonder of The Baths National Park.

Virgin Gorda is the perfect destination for those touring the British Virgin Islands on a crewed yacht charter , with full-service marinas at Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour in Spanish Town and Leverick Bay Marina at North Sound, both of which can accommodate yachts of up to 50m, as well as the newly-rebuilt Bitter End Yacht Club.

The star of the show on Virgin Gorda is The Baths National Park , a dramatic landscape strewn with gigantic boulders, interspersed with shallow pools and grottoes. The park is surrounded by clear, shallow water ideal for snorkelling and swimming and criss-crossed with hiking trails leading into the island’s wild interior.

Spanish Town, the second-biggest settlement in the British Virgin Islands, has a laid-back atmosphere, with life centering around the well-equipped Yacht Harbour, where you will find a small shopping centre and a number of low-key bars and cafes.

Further north, Gorda Peak National Park encompasses one of the few remaining areas of pristine Caribbean dry forest and is easy to navigate along marked hiking trails that lead up to the 418m-high Gorda Peak.

The 260-acre park is an internationally important conservation site, providing a habitat for rare plant species as well as tropical birds and the endemic Virgin Gorda gecko. From the peak, the highest point on the island, there are spectacular views over North Sound, and, on clear days, as far as Anegada .

The crystal clear and shallow waters around Virgin Gorda are perfect for snorkelling, with several great sites worth visiting around the coast. Savannah Bay, halfway along the west coast, is a popular site, with a helpful ‘snorkelling trail’ featuring underwater signs providing information about the rich marine life here, including hard and soft corals and numerous fish species.

Not far offshore from Savannah Bay are The Dogs, a group of five tiny, uninhabited islands surrounded by coral reefs ideal for novice snorkelers, who will discover a variety of colourful fish, corals and sponges in relatively shallow water.

Beginners will also enjoy exploring Mahoe Bay, protected by two coral reefs that are easily accessible from the beach. It’s popular with families and the sandy beach is an attractive setting for a picnic ashore.

Another snorkelling hotspot is Prickly Pear Island, in North Sound, which is also surrounded by fine sandy beaches. Visitors can explore the island along a signed hiking trail, and discover the rich local wildlife and native plant life, including a unique variety of cacti species.

Begin your own discovery of this stunning island by viewing and comparing all private yachts available for  crewed charter in the Virgin Islands .

Set your course for the BVI’s Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour (VGYH), now the preeminent and most complete marina on the island. Over the last 18 months, there’s been a new management team hired, significant infrastructure work, and expanded marketing of the marina including a new website with a first-time online booking and payment platform. There’s also a new dinghy dock, significant improvements to the docks, new shops, a spa, new eateries including a coffee shop, and extensive landscaping and signage upgrades. This work will continue into 2024 with further enhancements in the boatyard as the property prepares for the hurricane hauling season that starts in June.

“One of the most exciting upgrades to VGYH is the addition of a seasonal calendar of events designed to attract visitors to the marina and Virgin Gorda while creating a new buzz for the destination,” says Russell Harrigan, secretary of the BVI Investment Club, whose portfolio includes VGYH, Village Cay Marina, Coralisle Insurance, and desalination company Ocean Conversion.

The calendar kicked off with a successful inaugural New Year’s Eve celebration, dubbed ‘More for 2024’. This event was built around the concept of sustainability and trash to treasure. Old cars, empty oil drums, used pallets, scrap wood, and old bicycles were among the décor items.

Destination: Virgin Gorda — Devil’s Bay and the Baths

Courtesy Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour

The ‘More for 2024’ event spanned three main areas across the marina. First, the Children’s Village was hosted in the 9,000-square-foot supermarket building. Decorated with hundreds of Chinese paper lanterns, the space became a magical oasis that catered to children of all ages with festival food, face painting, basketball, swings, inflatables, air hockey, and more. The artist in residence, Tia Modeste, created numerous pieces of work, paintings on cars and bikes, backdrops, and several pieces for the children’s village. Most of these artworks will remain on permanent display at the marina, perfect for Instagram and other social media opportunities. The event also featured art by Tiea Lettsome and Allysa Kaddoura. The second space was dedicated to general admission, with the main stage and food and beverage vendors, while the third space, the rooftop offered a more intimate space and an ideal platform for viewing the fireworks. An incredible performance by USVI artists Rock City ended the evening. Plans are already in the works for New Year’s Eve 2024. www.vgyh.vg

Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Last updated on June 7th, 2023 at 09:19 am

Welcome to Virgin Gorda, a picturesque island in the British Virgin Islands. Explore the unique granite boulders of The Baths, stroll along stunning beaches like Savannah Bay, or snorkel in vibrant coral reefs. Immerse yourself in the tranquility of this island paradise, indulge in fresh seafood, and let the natural beauty of Virgin Gorda take your breath away.

virgin gorda yacht harbour photos

Much like the USVI’s St. John’s, Virgin Gorda is one of the few tropical islands not yet over-commercialized. The small island is the third largest of the British Virgin Islands and an intimate paradise of small villas, sparkling water, and friendly local smiles.

The island has a rich history. It was first seen by Christopher Columbus in 1493, was used by pirates as a base of operations in the 17th century, and like many of the Caribbean islands was later home to several sugar plantations in the 1700s until England abolished slavery in 1838. Virgin Gorda offers the splendor of dramatic tropical views and powder-white beaches among lush rolling hills giving visitors the quiet sense of owning their own bit of paradise.

U.S. Dollar – There is a FirstCaribbean Bank ATM in the Yacht Harbor area, but ATMs are available throughout the island.

Wireless Internet:

WiFi is available at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, at the main office or the Bath & Turtle Bar (with purchase). The Bitter End Yacht Club has free wireless.

Where You Dock in Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Like many smaller islands in the Caribbean, Virgin Gorda does not have a dock large enough to accommodate larger cruise ships. As a compromise, large ships dock off-island and tourist are transported to Spanish Town by ferries and smaller boats. You will dock at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor, which has many shops and restaurants.

Some smaller ships may dock in the North End of the island, where you will tender to Bitter End Yacht Club, which is a resort complex complete with souvenir shops and restaurants.

Getting Around Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Taxis:  For such a small island with a small population, Virgin Gorda has a huge number of available taxis. Drivers charge per person, so the more people you can find to share a ride, the cheaper it will be. You can also hire a taxi driver to take you on a tour of the island for a reasonable price.  If you plan on doing this, make sure the taxi has air conditioning – not all do.

Car Rental:  You can rent cars across from the yacht harbor. While there are a variety of options such as small cars and scooters, it is recommended you rent a 4-wheel drive vehicle such as a Jeep to handle the steep hills, and rough terrain if you happen to go off road. Driving is on the left. Rates will run about $60/day on average.

Ferry:  The Bitter End Yacht Club ferry runs between Gun Creek and the yacht club every half hour and is free of charge. The road systems aren’t complete, so taking the ferry is the only way to reach the yacht club. There is a ferry that runs between Spanish Town and The Bitter End Yacht Club (North Sound Express) for a fee. It also runs between Tortola and Virgin Gorda.

Shopping In Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Most of the shopping on Virgin Gorda is within the hotel complexes, or at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Club, which is the main commercial center. Popular shopping for tourists can be found at Top of the Baths, Leverick Bay. Virgin Gorda offers the boutique shopping popular in the Caribbean with a small variety of local island art and photography, jewelry, and of course, British Virgin Island outerwear such as jackets, hats, and t-shirts.

Dining In Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

Many of the islands restaurants are found in the secluded resorts which provide not only great ambiance, but amazing views of the island. Most restaurants offer Caribbean-based options, but you can also find some international cuisine and barbecue. Restaurants range in price from low to fine casual dining. For a bit of variety try the following:

Pavilion at Little Dix Bay:  An open-air dining pavilion with views of the sea popular for unique themed buffet dinners.

Hog Heaven:  An amazing barbecue venue with pulled pork, ribs, barbecue chicken, and potato salad. If you aren’t careful, you may feel the hint of the Southern U.S.

Top of the Baths:  A mix of standard American Fare, as well as a blend of island favorites. The food is almost as delicious as the views are amazing.

Hilltop Restaurant at Biras Creek Resort:  Considered by many to have the most beautiful views on the island, the restaurant also may provide the most interesting and delicious food on the island. The restaurant provides a flavorful and constantly changing menu of upscale local and international foods.

Fat Virgin’s Café: Nice mix of local island fare such as roti and pan-fried fish, you can also find delicious barbecue cooked up family style right in front of you.

Things To Do in Virgin Gorda – British Virgin Islands

The Baths | Virgin Gorda Activity

The Baths: One of the most popular destinations in the British Virgin Islands, the baths are a beach area with unique geologic formations. Granite boulders form natural tidal pools, arches, tunnels, and scenic grottos.

Copper Mine: National park with the ruins of a 19 th century copper mine. First constructed in 1837, by 1862 it had been abandoned. Now the mines offer a look into the past of mining on theisland. Interestingly, many of the island’s locals are descendants of the Cornish miners and the island women from that mining period.

Hiking: Virgin Gorda offers many areas to hike it’s lush forest. Perhaps the most popular is the Gorda Peak National Park which provides several trail, abundant wild life, and access to the highest peak on the island, Gorda Peak.

Snorkeling/SCUBA Diving: With some of the most beautiful water’s in the Caribbean you can snorkel or SCUBA dive nearly anywhere off the island. There are several diving charters available on the island which will take you out to view stunning coral and underwater wild life.

Prickly Pear Island National Park: The Prickly Pear slopes are covered in cactus and slide downward toward several powder beaches that offer great swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.

Virgin Gorda | Cruise Port Guide

Virgin Gorda offers some of the best beaches in the world with its tranquil waters and powdery white beaches. Due to the limited number of resorts on the island, many of the beaches are hidden coves and intimate settings you can enjoy in peace. The few resorts on the island provide similar intimate settings with amenities for beachgoers.

Little Dix Bay: Cradled between two small mountains and a coral reef Little Dix Bay beach is hidden in its own intimate cove.

Upper Beach Coast: Two beaches, Savannah Bay and Pond Bay provide nice white beaches overlooked by the islands highest point, Gorda Peak.

Mahoe Bay: Shallow reefs highlight this beach with an abundance of marine life including sea turtles.

Nail Bay: Amazing reef snorkeling, and rocky hikes that connect Nail Bay to Long Bay.

Long Bay: Reached by a small hike, and arguably the most beautiful and secluded beach on the island. Provides great swimming, snorkeling, and relaxation.

St.Thomas Bay (Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour)

virgin gorda yacht harbour photos

Be careful when coming from the North, making sure you give Colison Point a wide berth. There’s reefs awash up to 100 meters off the coast, supposedly marked by a buoy. In good weather, you can anchor in the lee of Colison Point, but please leave the access channel clear. The ferries dock at the pier in the Northeast corner of the bay. To reach the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour Marina (VHF 16/11) follow the dredged channel through the barrier reef. The reef comes from the bay’s South point. Enter Westward aiming for the first buoys you see. It marks the beginning of the buoys channel. The channel isn’t very wide especially for multihulls and has two sharp bends (doglegs).

Yacht Charters

  • Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands: Accessible Marinas and Anchorages

Virgin Gorda is the second-largest island in the British Virgin Islands. The island, of volcanic origin, is made up of several distinctly different areas. A beautiful mountainous center is the location of Gorda Peak National Park as well as the North Sound, the Beach Coast, The Baths, and the Valley, which is the island’s main habitation. Columbus named this island Virgin Gorda, meaning  “ fat virgin . ” He named it because of its shape as seen on the sea’s horizon.

Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor

Virgin Gorda, like the other British Virgin Islands, has tropical, hot temperatures throughout the year. However, the heat is tempered by the trade winds, with a more pleasant period from December to March. At that time the daily average temperature is around 75-77 °F. It is hotter from May to October when the daily average is around 82 °F.

Places to See

Certainly, all of the crystal clear waters surrounding Virgin Gorda’s beaches are excellent for snorkeling and scuba. Several of the most popular beaches are listed here.

  • The Baths. Located on the southwest tip of Gorda you will enjoy the huge boulders stacked and strewn amongst the white powder sand and palm trees. The labyrinth of caves and caverns created by the massive boulders gives way to Devil’s Bay with truly breathtaking scenery and to be sure, a must for any visitor.
  • The Crawl . Especially great for small children and novice snorkelers. Further giant boulders create a small lagoon of clear, calm water. Complete with some reefs, tropical fish, and even an occasional sea turtle. In addition, picnic tables with barbecue grills are nearby.
  • Little Dix Bay on the Beach Coast. An absolute gem of a beach. This bay is hidden in its own cove and boasts a gorgeous white sand beach. Moreover, it is magnificently framed by small mountains and their rocky points.
  • Long Bay the Beach Coast. A remote, secluded beach perfect for birding and beach-combing.
  • Mahoe Bay on the Beach Coast. In essence, this beach gives you the lovely feeling of being in a lagoon. Gently curving white sand is demarcated by its own small hillside valley onshore.
  • Savannah Bay the Beach Coast. Overall one of the nicest pure beaches without development. You can find it located at an interesting geographic location, the neck of the island.
  • Prickly Pear Island on the North Sound. A nice calm swimming beach with a beach bar. Then hike up over the ridge through the Prickly Pear Nature Refuge to North Beach. In fact known for outstanding swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, and beach-combing.
  • Oil Nut Bay Marina Village  is on the eastern tip of Virgin Gorda. Experience luxury island experience with all the surrounding resorts that offer rental of motorboats.

Things to Do

  • Hike to Gorda Peak. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water for this 50-minute hike to the highest point on Virgin Gorda. The views are spectacular.
  • Shop . There are quite a few places to shop in Yacht Harbour . For provisions and tasty treats, visit the Bath and Turtle, Buck’s Food Market, or the Wine Cellar. For gifts and clothing, try the Blue Banana, B.V.I. Apparel Outlet, Dive BVI LTD, Flamboyance, Margo’s Jewelry Boutique, and Shereen’s Nauti Virgin Too. Additionally, art lovers will enjoy Next Wave , The Artistic Gallery , and the Virgin Gorda Craft Shop .

Bitter-end-yacht-club

  • Dine . Biras Creek – An elegant restaurant overlooking North Sound. Of course, a dinner dress code and reservations are required. Fat Virgin’s Café – Casual waterside café located at Biras Creek. Burgers, sandwiches, soups, ribs, roti, pasta, fish, frozen drinks, and gourmet coffee. Phone 284-495-7052

Marinas and Anchorages

  • The Baths . The Baths is located on the southwestern shore of Virgin Gorda National Park. Moorings are available. This is a unique and beautiful location, but there can be swells at times. For this reason, anchoring is not permitted.
  • Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbour, Spanish Town . The marina offers over 100 berths with full marina facilities capable of accommodating mega-yachts up to 160′. The Harbour also has a dive shop, restaurant, some shops, banking facilities, and a drug store. While Spanish Town and St Thomas Bay Beach are only a short walk away.
  • Savannah Bay .   A delightful anchorage behind the reef in Savannah Bay. Anchoring is usually done in Pond Bay in the middle. Giorgio’s Table Restaurant is on the Point with a small dinghy dock below. This anchorage is not recommended for an overnight stay since a significant swell can penetrate the reef in northerly weather.
  • Long Bay .   A day anchorage just to the southeast of Mountain Point. Anchor on the sandy bottom.
  • Leverick Bay Resort & Marina , North Sound . A superb destination with moorings and a full-service marina. In particular a nice restaurant, dive shop, hotel, and laundry facilities. And the opportunity to stock provisions.
  • Bitter End Yacht Club, Gorda Sound . Indeed a must-see unique nautical village catering to yachtsmen. Another key point: The Quarterdeck Club and Marina offer private showers, fuel, electricity, garbage pickup, and mechanical services. Contact: Phone 284-494-2745
  • Biras Creek Marina . This especially well-protected anchorage is accessible directly from North Sound. Twenty-two moorings are available for a fee of $30 per night.
  • Gun Creek . A protected anchorage to the east of Leverick Bay. Provisions, a ferry, a restaurant, taxi island tours, and garbage disposal are available.
