What to Look for in a Sailing Compass

There are various factors you should take into consideration when attempting to buy a sailing compass. You would likely want to read user reviews and potentially test one out yourself to get a feel for what you need.

In addition you should also narrow down your sailing goals to determine what is going to work best for your situation. Buying a sailing compass simply because you think it looks cool is not going to help your situation out on the water.

Size of the Compass

In my experience you should aim for a sailing compass that has a large diameter. It needs to be able to fit properly onto your dashboard at the helm so that you have and easier time reading it.

If it is large enough you can read the numbers easier when the boat is in rough conditions. It does not necessarily have to have a backlight but that would help especially at night.

Various Mounting Options

Depending on the type of boat and the sailing compass you choose it might have different options for mounting it. Various mounting options exist for those that want to mount it a certain way.

Space on the Dashboard

This installation is simply on the dash of your boat if applicable. You will need to cut out and fit a section of the dash in order to keep it secure and it makes it permanent.

Flat Surface Areas

Installing on the surface is likely the easiest and quickest since you can simply place it and be done. A surface mount can either be flat somewhere at the helm or horizontally at the best spot. This also prevents you from having to cut out a section of the dash.

Using Brackets

If your sailing compass comes with brackets this will allow you to place anywhere you desire with some installation required. A bracket mount will typically allow you to move the compass slightly to get a better read and is ideal for placing in vertical spots.

Mounting it Flush

A flush mount installation is where you cut a hole in your dash and expose just enough of the compass to read it. Some sailing compasses are more attractive looking when you install it this way but it does take a little more time than standard surface installations.

Binnacle Mounting

Choosing a binnacle mount is another option that is referred to as a “little house” for the compass. This helps keep it out of the elements or sunlight and are typically larger.

A majority of the sailing compasses you see on the market have a backlight and it is a handy feature if you are in lower light conditions. You will likely need to have it close to a power supply for a lot of these but some come equipped with a slight illumination already to make it easier to read.

Various Types of Dials

There are a few dial options to consider when selecting your sailing compass. Each one could appeal to you based on the way you prefer to read it.

Direct Dial for Upright View

A direct dial has the lubber line in an aft position and are best suited for helms that are closer to eye level when sailing. It is recommended that you have plenty of experience reading this type of dial since it requires some knowledge beforehand.

Dial with Flat Card

A flat card dial has to be read while you are standing or sitting in a seat above the helm since it features a horizontal face. The lubber line is forward so you would need to have the right angle when looking at it.

Hybrid dials are likely what you are thinking which is a mix between direct and flat. These allow you to read the compass from nearly any direction. These are best if you are needing to see the direction from any part of the boat and if you are newer to reading a compass.

Your Knowledge

If you have never used a compass before it will likely take a slight learning curve to get used to it. Consider purchasing one that you can either read from any direction or has simple but precise markers in order to get an accurate reading. Sailors that have plenty of experience might be able to read any compass no matter the quality.

How Does a Sailing Compass Work?

A compass is an essential tool for your boat to help guide you safely during any event at sea. This is especially important because if your power fails on your boat you can use your compass to help navigate back to safety.

How it Operates

Beneath the compass card is a tiny magnet that keeps north and south in line with the help of the Earth’s magnetic field. The compass is encapsulated with a fluid to help keep it stable upon moving on the boat. These are typically an analogue compass but some digital ones do exist usually as a handheld version.

Deviation Process

Deviation is a term used to describe when a compass is thrown off of its accurate reading due to other magnetic influences or too much metal interfering with it. You will need to read the manual or check with a qualified professional to help get it back in check.

Various Styles

Your boat will likely need a specific compass to make it worth the investment. As mentioned a binnacle compass is best for when the view is above and it is likely mounted on the wheel.

Smaller boats that utilize tiller steering are best suited with bulkhead mount that are located at the front of the cockpit. These also generally help with determining the angle of the heel the boat is experiencing.

In other words you should conduct the proper amount of research to best fit your needs. Your budget and boat type will play a crucial role in determining the best one. Your sailing experience can also make an impact on the buying process to help find the best tactical scale on the water.

A Better Electronic Compass

Velocitek Prism

We first looked at Velocitek’s Prism compass in 2019 and found a lot to like: big, easy-to-read numbers, cut-acrylic lenses that allow the numbers to be easily seen in any daylight situation and not get wonky when viewed through polarized lenses, and at just under five ounces, probably the lightest small-boat compass out there.  So, when we learned a new version was in the wings, we had to see what could possibly have been improved.

In appearance, the New Prism is identical to the original except for one detail—a USB port on the back, sealed with a half-inch diameter plug that can be screwed in or out with a coin. Out of juice after a long day on the water?  Plug it into your computer or a wall brick, and in about six hours you can go from zero to full charge. Most times, you don’t even need to be at 100 pecent since a full charge will last more than 48 hours, so you probably won’t even need six hours of charging. No more setting the compass out in the sun for hours after racing, hoping the clouds don’t roll in before it’s recharged.

“The USB is more of a sure thing,” says Velocitek’s Charles Swanson. “Cloudy days don’t affect it, and it doesn’t matter if the compass is tucked up in the shade under the boom.”  With this setup, the solar panel is now just a battery-extending backup.

The other big difference is inside. The New Prism now houses the same, patented, solid-state geomagnetic sensor found in Velocitek’s top-of-the-line ProStart instrument. Two big advantages of this upgrade, says Swanson. “This magneto-inductive sensor is not influenced by temperature changes and is inherently free from offset drift. This means that the factory calibration remains valid indefinitely and in all conditions. ”

More importantly, the new sensor, combined with the more powerful charging supplied by the USB connection, allows a dramatically improved refresh rate—the number of times the screen is updated—going from the earlier Prism’s once a second to four times a second. Want to see it in action? Go through a tack and watch the numbers change. Undetectable lag time.

Ease of use?  One button positioned on top of the compass does everything. That should put a big smile on the faces of those who have struggled with multi-button processes on various other electronic devices. Press the button and the left screen says “BAT” and displays the battery level on the right screen. Shortly after, it automatically switches to compass mode. And that’s all there is to it, unless you want to set the damping mode, done by briefly pressing the button again.  Toggle through one of three damping levels by tilting the compass. This was the trickiest part of the compass to use, as you have to press the button again at the exact moment the desired damping level appears. Miss that moment and you’re probably onto another damping level. Not a big deal though, as this is something few would often adjust. Turn off the power by holding the button down for about three seconds. Easy-peasy.

For some, the one hesitation about the New Prism is the lack of a timer. The folks at Velocitek don’t apologize for that. After all, their goal was to create a straightforward, easy-to-operate, top-level compass—nothing more. Perfection embodied. And that’s just fine with a lot of sailors. For instance, in some classes, it’s impractical to have a timer and compass in one unit, such as Nacra catamarans, which mount the compass on the bowsprit, or 49ers, which carry the compass forward of the mast. That’s a pretty inconvenient reach to change modes. Others gravitate to a single-use instrument because of a reluctance to be without compass readings in the starting sequence. Yes, you can toggle between modes, but how many of us have found ourselves locked out of one mode or the other at that critical time, often because we accidentally pressed the wrong button or we held it down too long?

This compass doesn’t meet the needs of everyone, but if you’re looking for a fail-safe instrument that will give you quick and precise readings as well as eliminate concerns about staying charged, it’s definitely worth considering. $579.

How to Use a Boat Compass (Complete beginners guide)

Every boat should have a compass and a sailor that knows how to use it. It isn't difficult to use one - it's just so easy to make mistakes if you've never learned to use them. In this post I learn you how.

How to use a boat compass? The lubber line (a small line on the compass) marks your direction on the compass card. The direction is given in degrees. You pick a course on a marine chart. Then, you steer the boat so that the lubber line points to the correct degree on the compass card. You keep course by making sure the lubber line stays put.

Using a compass is easy enough. The hard part is making sure it's properly calibrated, and this is where many people go wrong.

small sailboat compass

On this page:

How to use a boat compass, types of compasses, how does a compass work, difference between gps and compass, how to swing a compass, quick mounting tips, related questions.

To use a boat compass, you need the following:

  • a compass (of course)
  • a maritime chart
  • make sure the compass is properly calibrated and adjusted

Each compass has a line on its glass. This is called the lubber line. The lubber line is used to mark your direction on the compass card. The compass card is the rotating card that says North, South, and so on.

You pick a course using a marine chart. You start by determining your starting position (the easiest is taking your marina - typically it will be on the map). Then, pick your destination. You can determine the course by drawing a line between these two points and reading the angle (degrees).

Learn to Plot a Course Step By Step To learn how to plot a course on a chart step-by-step, read our full illustrated guide here .

Marine navigation chart with pair of dividers

Time to get moving. You set course by steering the boat to the direction where the lubber line on the compass matches the degree you chose exactly. You keep course by making sure your lubber line stays put.

Generally, you can simply use the above method, but it can prove inaccurate with longer journeys due to drift and tidal currents. Calculating and planning your course to steer (CTS) is a different subject and outside the scope of this article.

Why it's important to have one

A well-compensated compass gets you home, period. It's the most important and reliable navigational instrument around. The only place it's useless is near the magnetic poles, but who goes there for their sailing trip ( - dare)? It doesn't require any power, it doesn't rely on electronics or satellite. And sadly, it's as underutilized as it is useful.

If you carry a compass and a paper chart, you're practically unbeatable.

I would much prefer a compass over any electrical system. Chartplotters are great, but they won't beat a compass in the reliability game. I feel much more secure navigating any waters using a compass than all the chartplotters in the world.

If your boat doesn't have a compass, get one asap. I really mean this. There will come a day you really wish you had one. There fairly inexpensive, so in my opinion it's better to skip the new sonar-fishfinder-thing and get a reliable compass. They last you a lifetime and will serve you well.

You don't have to go overboard when buying a good, reliable compass. It's pretty affordable. If you want to know what I use, read my article here . It's so good, I even have one in my car.

Calibration / alignment

If the compass isn't properly calibrated it can cause trouble. I'll get into the reasons for misalignment below. The easiest way to check for misalignment is by paying attention when you enter or leave your marina. Most marine charts show the exact course for entering harbors and marinas. Align yourself with the buoys and check whether your compass matches.

How to make sure you always get home safely

When setting sail, always remember the opposite direction of your course. This is the reciprocal course. It's the magic number that will get you home, no matter what.

More high-end compasses will have a lubber line at the back as well. This helps you to read the direction reciprocal course. If you don't have a fancy double lubber line, simply add 180 degrees to your course. I make sure to remember it every time I set course. If my chartplotter fails, I'll get home without problems.

I recommend having a backup compass in your captain's bag as well.

There are many types of compasses, but the main ones you use on a boat are magnetic and GPS.

  • magnetic compass - use a moving card or moving needle to determine Magnetic North
  • GPS compass - these use multiple satellites that pinpoint location; they determine True North
  • fluxgate compass - no moving parts; uses coils of wire and uses electricity to amplify the directional signal

In addition I recommend to have a hand bearing compass. This is a good backup and can be especially useful for coastal navigation.

The most common type of compass is magnetic. It points to magnetic north. It does this by small magnets which are attached to the compass card. The compass card has a degree-scale which sits on a small bearing. This allows the card to rotate freely as you change direction - it's kept in liquid air to allow free movement. You can read your direction using the needle or lubber line. The best type of compass for boats is a magnetic compass with a curved card and lubber line.

Picture of Ritchie boat compass showing the card, lubber line and bezel

So, simple enough, right? Not really. When we say a compass points north, it gets more complicated than you might imagine. There are three different norths: (1) Magnetic North, (2) True North, and (3) Grid North.

Grid North is north as indicated by the central vertical grid line on a map (the line running east of the UK). True North is the end of Earth's axis. The difference between true and grid north is very small and can be ignored for navigational purposes.

Magnetic North is where all magnetic compasses point to. The magnetic north pole shifts over time (less than 6 meters per year on the surface), called the 'Chandler wobble', under influence of the dynamo currents of the Earth's core. If you want to learn more on how this works, you can find more information on Scientific America here .

World Map with grid indicating the three different norths

Checking the alignment when leaving the marina

A compass can be misaligned. Luckily, there's a simple way to find out. You can find the directional line for the entry of all major marinas on a marine map. It always tells you the exact direction. This gives you a great opportunity to check the alignment of your compass every time you leave and enter your marina.

Once you're aligned with the buoys, you can compare the direction your lubber line indicates to the direction you know you're sailing. Adjust accordingly.

Other ways to check your compasses alignment are:

  • compare to reliable, accurate compass
  • compare to GPS (though this can be trouble)
  • find a large object that aligns to north and set course to that object

Why can't we just use GPS?

However unlikely, in theory GPS can fail in many ways. On the satellite side of the operation, the most common reason for failure in open waters are atmospheric conditions (aka the weather). More uncommon causes for failure are solar storms, radio interference, temporary gaps in coverage due to maneuvers and satellite maintenance (yes, the government does need to attend to these bad boys).

In my opinion, a major reliability issue is the energy dependency of GPS devices: if you run out of power, you have no means of navigating.

A compass tells you direction, not just track

The compass is the only instrument that tells you which direction your vessel is pointing. Sure enough, GPS will tell you in what direction you're headed, but only when you're in motion. It by no means tells you what direction you're pointing in right now. And this is important because the current or wind will influence your course over ground, which will differ from your steering direction.

In short, if you're serious about navigation, and want to plan, for example, your course to steer, you need to know how to use a compass.

Diagram of sailboat showing the concept of leeway

Using it with your navigation system

Navigating on a compass is way easier than sailing on your chartplotter. You just pick a course and stick to it. That's why I prefer to sail on compass. Whenever I get in proximity of my destination I switch to my navigation system. This ensures a way more relaxed trip. I also like to not become overly dependent of my GPS.

Nowadays, you can get a reliable, easy-to-use chartplotter , made by a reputable brand, with all the functionalities of an advanced marine GPS, at a fraction of the price. Click here to read my recommendation .

Detecting and correcting Cross Current

A cool trick when using the compass and GPS combined is detecting a cross current. You do this by comparing your true compass course to the course over ground (COG - GPS). You can find out the speed and direction of the current, and adjust your course to steer accordingly.

A 6° course correction in the direction from which the current flows is required per 10% of cross-current velocity relative to the ship's velocity.

If you're sailing at 10 knots, you correct 6° for every 1 knot of cross current.

Taken from the Lo-Tech Navigator by Tony Crowley

Calibrating a compass - also called swinging - literally means you adjust the compass' deviation using tiny magnets. Compass adjusting is a complex process that requires a lot of skill and experience. That's why there are professional compass swingers. I advise you get one of them to do the swinging, since you don't want to mess up your compass. But we can still have a look at how it's done.

Compass deviation is caused by materials and equipment used in and on the vessel. For example, a compass that's slightly left of the boat's centerline may have a slight deviation to the right. The hull mass can affect the compass. If it's mounted near electronic equipment, that will affect the deviation quite a bit, since electronics produce a magnetic field.

Compass deviation is the difference between Magnetic North and the direction in which you're pointing. The deviation is measured in degrees east (+) or west (-).

A compass swinger always starts out by creating a compass deviation card . He or she does this by taking the boat out for a spin, and comparing each directional line to a very reliable compass. Then, he writes down each deviation. You can create your own deviation card, and this is even recommended. A deviation card remembers you to correct the course for your particular compass.

You can download a printable compass deviation card here - 100% free .

If you're not planning on swinging the compass, at least fill in the deviation card, laminate it, and hang it besides your steering wheel.

The next step in swinging is the most difficult. The swinger will use very small magnets and place them around the compass in a way that the deviation is reduced to a minimum. You can do this yourself, but it requires a lot of patience. I like to outsource these kinds of frustrating jobs.

You can let somebody swing your compass for roughly $400.

However, if you want to do this yourself, please consider the following tips:

  • Make sure the water is smooth - no strong drift
  • You could try to do it in a narrow river with a strong current - if you want to go mad
  • You need a buoy that has fixed bearings to at least 3 landmarks
  • You need a 'master rose' - a quality compass
  • You need a friend in a dinghy
  • Tie up your boat at the buoy and tie the dinghy to the stern
  • Use the dinghy's engine to point to each of the landmarks and compare the master compass reading with yours
  • Notate the deviation for each 30 - 45 degree increment.
  • Recheck after compensation

I hope to do a full article on how to swing a compass in the future.

Since a compass is magnetic, any metals in the vicinity will interfere with it. This is called magnetic deviation. Picking a good spot for mounting is crucial to ensure accuracy. A couple of quick tips to keep in mind when mounting yours:

  • keep it away from metals (they will swing the compass) ...
  • ... but also from electrical systems (they have a magnetic field as well)
  • mount as close to the centre line of your boat as possible (this ensures the magnetic deviations are mostly symmetrical)
  • make sure it's accessible for adjustment
  • it should be easily readable from the helm, while at the same time allowing you to keep an eye out for meeting vessels
  • use bronze or stainless steel screws, washers, and brackets for mounting - don't use magnetic materials

There are three mounting styles for boats: bracket mounted (these are easy to install anywhere yourself), flush mounted (these are recessed into your dashboard or instrument panel), and overhead mounted (these hang from the ceiling at eye level).

Bracket mounted compasses are easiest to install. Flush-mounted compasses take a bit more effort, but look really good. A con is that they may be less accessible when you need to adjust them. Overhead mounted compasses have the advantage that they're easy to read because they're at eye level, and any air bubbles won't be as much of a problem. They are also away from most electrical equipment, which reduces magnetic interference. However, they can obviously only be mounted on larger boats with a steering hut.

Does a boat need a compass? Every boat needs a magnetic compass. It is still the most reliable means of navigation. It is also the most convenient for long-distance navigation. GPS and chartplotting navigation are becoming the norm for premium yachts, but these systems can fail. A compass is a great backup to have in case of technical failure.

What does it cost to swing a compass? It costs anywhere between $400 - 600 to swing a compass. This includes creating or checking the deviation card, placing the magnets to reduce the deviation, and doing a final check to make sure the compass is calibrated properly.

What is a compass deviation swing? A compass deviation swing a method to calibrate a compass, using small magnets to offset the deviation of the compass. Compass deviation is the difference between Magnetic North and the direction the compass is pointing in. Deviation is caused by electromagnetic fields around the compass.

Marine navigation has never been more accurate with TurnOnSport Boat Compass. Accuracy has always been one of the most critical issues with marine compasses, but TurnOnSport’s compensators easily settle this concern.

One of the highlights of TurnOnSport is its East-West and North-South compensators that minimize external influences on the marine compass. This leads to a more precise direction, making it one of the most reliable and in-demand compass brands in the market today.

The compensators aren’t my only favorite thing about TurnOnSport. I also like that it’s dependable day in and day out. At night, its incandescent light makes the device visible and readable. There is nothing to worry about when the dark sets in.

And if you’re concerned about the rugged marine conditions, this brand is definitely up for the tough times. The compass’s made from ABS plastic, which is waterproof and corrosion-resistant.

Despite its hefty size, the device remains lightweight. Installing it yourself will be a breeze. The compass comes with two EVA stickers and two screws, so mounting is never a challenge. Just look for the sweet spot, stick it up or screw it and you’re done.

You also do not have to worry about exposing the compass to too much sunlight as it has a movable cover for shade. Whether it’s a big boat or a kayak, TurnOnSport is your dependable marine compass.

Reliable utility and superior accuracy are what Ritchie Navigation Explorer Compasses are known for. With over a century of experience in the marine industry, Ritchie Navigation products remain top producers of navigational compasses for commercial and recreational boats. So, what’s up with their Explorer compasses? Find out in this review.

One of my pet peeves with compasses is how unreliable they can be. But this 2.75″ surface mount compass has what it takes to be considered a trustworthy product. I love that the makers reinforced the device with a triple cup sapphire jewel and a toughened steel pivot where every micrometer matches to a tee.

As a result, the device operates quite smoothly and locks on rather quickly even when subjected to extremes.

To be more specific about it, this device sports High Gauss Magnets customized for different compass specifications. These magnets seek and lock to magnetic north, so you know you are always right on track.

Another must-have utility for any boat compass is compensators. You can tick that box off as this compass has those. It has solid, built-in, non-interactive magnets that act as compensators for correction and accuracy. Moreover, you will get to enjoy its nighttime internal green illumination using a 12V power light.

  • Accuracy guaranteed with its triple cup sapphire and robust steel pivot.
  • Uses High Gauss Magnets that point to magnetic north.
  • Its solid compensators reliably correct deviations.
  • Green light illumination for nighttime navigation.
  • Adjustment rod may rattle over long-term use.

Tired of an unreliable compass? Odowalker Electronic Marine Digital Compass is one of the few top-of-the-line brands that hold on to promised accuracy and aesthetics. It is highly functional and straightforward, giving you spot-on directions without a lot of fuss.

If you’re a sailing enthusiast as I am, then you’ll definitely find this device to be quite a dependable buddy at sea. The device is sturdy and is made for tough times using high-quality ABS material.

Nighttime sailing can also be extra challenging for sailors, as poor lighting impairs much-needed visibility onboard. So I like that Odowalker had its compass built with an incandescent bulb light to illuminate the compass. This makes the device readable even at night.

Another thing I like about Odo Walker is how easily you can adjust the declination sheet. Thanks to its adjustable brackets, managing the compass’s position relative to the viewer’s angle can be done swiftly. I did not have to stay in one spot to get a good view of the compass.

Moreover, this compass is not just for marine use. It’s also best suited for cars, trucks, and other land-based automobiles. Odo Walker is truly one of the most flexible compass devices you can get out there. The device is available in black and white colors with a neat-looking design.

  • Manage compass’s position easily using its adjustable declination sheet.
  • Flexible device; can be used on land-based automobiles.

We all want to make our buy worthy. That’s why everyone should be equipped with some info regarding marine compasses. So, what are the two important things that you must keep in mind? Well, first is the mounting method.

If you choose the correct mounting method before buying your compass, you will notice how it makes all the difference. There are different mounting methods, but I will just introduce the four common ones and exclude less common types like the overhead marine compass. They are the bracket mount, flush-mount, surface mount, and binnacle mount.

In a bracket mount, the compass usually rests in a bracket. You can mount this type on helms or decks. It is also easy to do, and you can have the right angle right away, which is why it is loved by many compass users.

Next is the flush mount. In this type, the compass lies inside the dashboard. It comes with a challenging assembly, but I can guarantee that the quality and visuals that this mounting type offers are out of this world.

The surface mount is where the compass sits on top of the dashboard. Just like a bracket mount, it is also easy to install. If you opt for a decent-looking installation, then you should go for this one.

Lastly, the binnacle mount. Just like the name says, a binnacle-mounted compass comes with its own case. It also looks decent and classy, but this mounting type may be bulky and takes up a lot of space. It also needs a lot of work, just like a flush mount.

After knowing the mounting types, I know that you already have your favorite in mind. It is time to go to the next thing that you should consider – the size. You would not want a bulky compass attached to a tiny helm. Besides that, the right size allows you to read the direction quickly and easily, even after installation.

Remember that smaller to mid-sized ones can range from 4 to 5 inches wide. Small sailboats, usually under 20 ft., are better suited with a small surface-mounted compass.

dash-mount-marine-compass

A bracket-mount compass usually comes with a mounting bracket. Some compasses do not come with a bracket mount, but there are times when you can convert one type of mount to another — for example, using a bracket to convert a flush mount to a bracket mount.

If you do not want to have a bracket mount, you can opt for Ritchie Explorer, Voyager, or Navigation Globemaster models.

Marine compass adjustments can be a piece of cake or a headache. But the general rule is to head zero degrees using the compass while disregarding the heading. After that, you should turn exactly 180 degrees and adjust the compensator. This will take out half the overshoot or undershoot. You can then repeat the steps on 90 to adjust the fore compensator.

To know if your compass is running accurately, you should observe these things. Put the compass on a non-magnetic flat surface.

Afterward, you should turn it in a clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. If the compass is accurate, the needle should act like a match stick that floats in the middle of a basin of liquid that you twist.

Calibrating a compass is one of the most challenging parts for me. I know that you can eventually get used to it, but the quality of a compass also plays a part. Choose a compass that delivers accurate direction and does not require constant calibration or tapping. It will save your time a lot.

Choose the best marine compass that comes with your preferred mounting type. By doing so, you can install something that you can actually handle. If you are a starter, choosing a bracket or surface mount is a good idea.

Besides, If you are care more about cabin products for boat such as boat seats or boat carpets , you also can search them on categories on the top of the article.

Boat Compass Buying Guide

There are many things you need to look out for when purchasing a boat compass. After all, you don’t want to end up with a product that doesn’t show true directions. Here’s everything you need to know.

Compass Size

According to experts, as a rule, always choose a compass that has a large diameter. It should conform with your dashboard or helm to fit properly while also increasing readability. This feature can be a lifesaver when there is a lot of turbulence or when a storm is making the boat too rocky. If your compass does not come with illumination, a bigger dial will make it easy to read in the moonlight or under a flashlight.

Mounting Options

You also have a choice when it comes to the placement of your compass. Pick out the type that you feel will best suit your needs.

This is a model that can be installed on the dashboard of a ship or a vehicle and are mostly direct read dials that have to be kept in a vertical position to work properly. You will need to cut out some parts of the dash panel to properly install this boat compass.

Surface mount

These compasses can either simply be placed on a flat surface or installed horizontally. They are ideal for when you don’t want to cut out the dash or when you have a compact helm and come in all types of dials like direct-read, flat, or hybrid.

Most experts prefer compasses that come with brackets, as they allow tilting of the compass for better readings, but they are primarily suited for vertical surfaces. These come in all types of dial options.

Flush mount

This is another mounting option that requires you to make a hole on the surface of the dash. It gets installed into the hole so that only the surface of the compass is visible. These kinds of compasses are available in direct reads or hybrid dials.

Binnacle mount

Another type of surface mount compass is the binnacle mount model. These have longer bodies, as the compasses are large, and all come in flat card dials.

Almost all marine compasses come with LED lighting that needs to be connected to the power supply. This is because illumination makes reading the directions easy on a compass, whether you are traveling during the day or on dark, stormy nights. Certain compasses come with their own illumination that is either red or green-hued.

Some compasses come with adjustable shields that help protect the compass from sunlight to not cause glare. This helps increase readability even when the light is too bright, or the boat moves too much.

When it comes to boat compass dials, there are quite a few options. Here is all you need to know.

Direct-dial

Direct dials are for upright views where the lubber line is at the aft portion. These conical-shaped dials are perfect for helms where the boat compass is close to eye level. Generally, this type of dial is for expert sailors, as they know just the right way to read it.

A flat card dial comes with a horizontal face, so you need to be standing up when checking the compass. The lubber line is at a forward position, which is well suited to helms because you are mostly standing straight while piloting the boat. If you have a luxury boat with high seating, a flat card compass would also work well for you.

Hybrid dial

Hybrid dials are a mixture of direct read and flat card compasses. Also known as the combi-dial, the hybrid is widely available among boat compasses from Ritchie Navigations. What is so interesting about hybrid dials is that they can be read from above as well as from the front. This makes for an excellent and easy read because taking notes of the directions will not be an issue whether you are sitting or standing.

This is another important thing you need to consider when purchasing a boat compass. If you are a seasoned sailor, you will be able to read all kinds of dials and compasses. However, if you’re new to sailing and haven’t had much experience taking readings from compasses, you will need to get one that has clear, precise markers and a simplified read. This way, there will be no chance of getting confused about which direction you want to go.

People Also Asked

Whether you are a professional sailor or a beginner, a compass is essential. If you don’t have a compass, the chances of getting lost are high, it can cause great distress, and might also lead to some kind of accident. So be sure to always sail or go out on the sea with an accurate compass.

Calibrating a compass isn’t too difficult. You start by putting the compass to zero and then turning it 180 degrees. Then adjust the athwartship compensator in such a way that one half is over or undershoot. Repeat at 90 degrees, all the while adjusting the fore/aft compensator.

Very much so. The compass can break, its glass can crack, the plastic can melt, or the housing could leak. After some time, the fluid in the housing can change colors, although this only happens after a long time of use. Most compasses from good companies last a long time without getting any kind of damage. Generally, it’s a good idea to check out reviews before investing in one.

This depends on what manufacturer you buy from. Some companies give a bracket mount so that installation is easy, while others only come with double-ended tape or with a stand of their own that can be placed on a plain flat surface. If you have specific needs, be sure to ask the seller whether or not a bracket comes with the compass.

A Universal Marine Compass

A steering compass that also serves for hand-held bearings

From Issue   September 2023

I n the late 1990s and early 2000s I taught small-boat seamanship classes under sail at WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine. For the most part, we sailed within a sheltered cove with an occasional voyage around some not-too-distant islands. At no point were we out of sight of land or, indeed, more than a few hundred yards from shore. Our boats were Herreshoff and Haven 12-1/2s, each equipped with sails, paddle, chart, anchor, and compass.

I had come to Maine from southwest England, an area known for its rain and wind. Those of us who sailed small open boats there were well practiced in reefing, but we rarely had to navigate by chart and compass. I don’t remember ever carrying a compass except for the few times we were sailing offshore or at night. We did, of course, have the occasional foggy day, but it was always well forecast and when it came, it hung around, socked in for the day. We simply stayed home. Maine, I quickly realized, was different. Here, on a bright summer day, a fog bank could roll in and overtake me with alarming speed. Within minutes I could go from full visibility to a few feet. Even more confusing, I could be sitting in full fog yet still see blue sky above. I understood why all the school’s sailboats had compasses.

Mounted on the aft end of a centerboard case the compass is conveniently placed for use as a steering compass and easily to hand if needed to take a bearing. The underside of the bowl has a flat area that allows the compass to lie flush with the surface beneath it.

While most of the boats had small bulkhead-mounted steering compasses, one or two had handheld compasses that had to be retrieved from a locker and so were seldom used. One boat had a compass that hung in a simple bracket mounted on the forward bulkhead and could be removed to be used as a handheld bearing compass.

I came to love that compass and determined to buy one for myself. I researched the product number and details only to discover that it was no longer on the market. Through the ensuing 20 years I have, from time to time, half-heartedly looked online for my compass.

Last month I found it. It was not the same brand, but in all other respects it appeared to be identical. I ordered one immediately.

small sailboat compass

The central strip in the bracket has a slight flex. When the compass is slid into the sleeve two tabs on the bracket snap into grooves in the compass handle and hold it securely, but not so tight that the compass cannot be pulled out of the bracket one-handed and with just a slight tug.

T he Silva 70UN measures 7″ from the top of the bowl to the bottom of the handle, and the outside case around the bowl has a 3 1⁄2″ diameter. It is waterproof and floats semi-submerged horizontally. It comes with a bracket and four brass mounting screws. (Additional brackets are available if there’s a need for more than one fixed location.) The compass can be mounted at any angle, even upside down, and read from the side or the top. As a steering compass, it must be mounted parallel to the plane of the boat’s centerline, either horizontally on a flat surface such as a thwart or centerboard case, or suspended from a cabin-top, or vertically on any bulkhead or other fixed upright.

Once the bracket is fitted, the handle of the compass is slid into it and held stable, prevented from jumping out by a subtle plastic snap within the face of the bracket that aligns with shallow 3⁄8″-long grooves in the compass handle. If the bracket is mounted so the compass can be seen from the helm, head-on with the curved front and back lubber lines overlapped, it can be used as a steering compass and, thanks to the large digits, is easy to read.

small sailboat compass

The compass is fully waterproof and floats. The case of the illuminated 70UNE is white, which might be easier to see if it’s dropped overboard.

For taking sights, the compass is quickly detached from the bracket. It can be lifted out with just a little force; only one hand is needed. The ergonomic shape and plastic’s matte finish make it comfortable in the hand. There are two scales: a main steering scale on the horizontal face of the compass card and a direct reading scale on the vertical edge. Both are marked in five-degree increments, with each 30-degree angle numbered: 0°, 30°, 60°, etc.

The manufacturer’s description says that the bowl is made from clear scratch-resistant acrylic and that the “combination of a sapphire jewel bearing, and a hardened steel pivot minimizes friction, which in turn gives rapid and accurate movements.” The damping-fluid-immersed card does not spin. When the compass is mounted, the card will still function with the boat heeled up to 30 degrees. Beyond that, it sticks.

small sailboat compass

Thanks to its ergonomic design and matte-plastic finish, the Silva 70UN is well balanced and comfortable in the hand making it easy to hold steady when taking bearings.

Jenny Bennett is managing editor of Small Boats .

The Silva 70UN is available from various online outlets priced from around $110, the Silva 70UNE is priced from around $120; I found my 70UN on Amazon for $107.99, and additional brackets at tridentuk.com priced $13.43 plus shipping.

Good article.

For many years, I have used a Plastimo Iris 100 hand-held compass, which has pretty much the same features and very similar configuration as those noted for the compass in the article, including a clip for bulkhead or thwart mounting. I mounted my clip on the aft bulkhead of my sail-and-oar boat to use while facing backwards, rowing. (I had a larger, bulkhead-mounted compass forward for sailing.)

Have had one of these for years. With RAN TAN, which has some space in the daggerboard trunk ahead of the dagerboard, I have a block of wood with a hole in it for the handle of the compass and the wood fits into the trunk. A hole in a thwart or seat works well as a mount. I do have an old sock into which I put the compass when not in use to keep the dome from being scratched, being somewhat cynical about manufacture claims.

I have the same compass in my 17′ Whitehall (traditional lapstrake, wood). I made a removable base that can bungee onto any of my thwarts. This allows me to use one mount and use it in a number of locations as the need arises. When the compass is not in use, I have a neoprene bag to keep it in and protected. Works wonderful as a bearing compass or steering compass. With the “classic wood” base-mount, it really fits with the character of the boat.

I have a much simpler (and cheaper) bearing compass that I take kayaking. The usefulness of this type of compass comes when you find yourself in unfamiliar waters and need to know your location. Sighting one, two, or three prominent landmarks in different directions gives you crossing lines that pinpoint where you are.

If often grouse when I am with a group on an excursion, and everybody prefers to let the “leader” do the navigating. Everyone (in separate boats) should carry a chart, and should take some responsibility for navigating. Groups have been known to get separated, with resulting embarrassing or awkward outcomes. Sometimes the leader doesn’t know what’s going on any more than the followers.

Of course GPS solves all these problems. Until the batteries give out.

Adjust Your Own Compass

small sailboat compass

With a little care, boatowners can do a perfectly adequate job of compensating their own compasses. The objective in compass adjusting is to neutralize the boat’s magnetism, not to make the compass point in any particular direction. You can determine the effect of the boat’s magnetic field on any compass bearing by simply turning the boat 180 for the amount that the compass overshoots or under‑shoots a 180′ change is always just twice the effect of the boat’s field on that heading.

All you have to do is head zero degrees by the COMPASS (never mind what the heading actually is), then turn EXACTLY 180 ” and adjust the thwartship compensator to take out one half the over- or undershoot. Repeat on 90 adjusting the fore/aft compensator. That’s all there is to it!

My favored approach is to tie the boat bow and stern across some quiet canal on a near north-south compass heading, winch up tight and read the compass. Then swap bow and stern lines, winch up tight again, and take out one half the amount the compass over- or under-shot the 180 turn. Do the same on a near east-west heading, and then repeat the process until there is no remaining over- or undershoot of the    turns.

This procedure provides exact neutralization of the horizontal component of the boat’s magnetic field at the compass location, which is the best that can be done with the two compensating adjustments usually provided on a small boat. The headings do NOT have to be exactly compass N-S and E-W. If they are within a few degrees that’s good enough. If perchance the headings chosen happen to be exactly magnetic N-S and E-W, then the two adjustments would be uncoupled and exact compensation theoretically could be reached in one round of adjustments. The further the chosen headings are from exact magnetic N-S and E-W, the more adjustments would be required to achieve complete neutralization of the boat magnetism, but even then the procedure does converge to the correct adjustment.

Incidentally, you don’t really need two compensating magnets. Complete compensation could be provided by a single magnet mounted directly below the compass binnacle, and arranged to be raised or lowered to adjust the magnitude of the compensating effect and rotated to establish its direction.

Editorial Note: This simple procedure will, in fact, neutralize the vessel’s magnetic field within the capabilities of the internal adjusting magnets. However, the effect of the magnets can change on a sailboat as the boat heels, and it is also possible for the engine, when running, to affect the compass.

We would want to reinforce our faith in the compass, after neutralizing the boat’s magnetic field as much as possible, by running compass courses between a number of fixed points in known locations, under sail and under power, so that a good deviation card can be developed.

Boat Compasses - Hand-bearing and Fixed Marine Compasses

Binoculars  |  Chart Table Instruments  |  Clocks & Barometers  |  Compasses  |  Paper & Electronic Charts  |  Sextants  |  Watches  |  Weather Instruments

Choosing the right compass for marine navigation is crucial. You should consider several factors, such as lighting, night visibility, compensation, and balance. There are two styles of boat compass to consider and sometimes having both on board is worthwhile.

Firstly there are hand-bearing compasses or sight bearing compasses. Typically small and handheld, these compasses feature a sighting mechanism that helps to accurately identify locations and calculate bearings.

Secondly there are fixed mount marine compasses. These come in a variety of mounting options to suit different types of vessels and mounting locations.

  • Flush mount on a horizontal surface: This is a great option for flybridges, central steering areas, or upper decks. This is because it provides a good viewing angle for the compass.
  • Flush mount on a vertical/inclined surface: Bulkhead mounted nautical compasses are best suited to sailing yachts. Ideally mounted in the cockpit area of the boat.
  • Bracket: Popular with powerboats, a bracket allows for quick and easy mounting in several locations on the boat.
  • Binnacle for steering wheel: This is an ideal option for sailboats that have a steering wheel, and is extremely popular.
  • Mini Binnacle mounting: An ultra-slim and compact version that makes it easy to mount the compass without a cut-out hole.
  • Removable mount: Allows you to place the compass in a fixing plate wherever you need it. This allows for easy removal and storage at the end of the day.
  • Mast mounting: This is a great option for boats with limited space, and a mast mount kit is available to make installation easy.
