Our first ship – and with her this special sailing concept was founded in 2007. With a length of 38 meters and a sail area of 556 m², KAIRÓS is about half the size of her two big sisters CHRONOS and RHEA.
Our sailing yacht KAIRÓS
In Greek mythology, KAIRÓS symbolizes the fleeting, even brief and opportune moment – which must be seized at the right moment. What a symbol for our sailing trips!
The KAIRÓS is registered as a passenger ship under the Maltese flag. The professional crew consists of the captain, helmsman/mechanic, bosun, cook and 2 stewardesses.
With its 8 guest cabins / up to 16 guests, the KAIRÓS is even more individual compared to the two larger ships and the atmosphere is even closer to yacht sailing. Even though she is the smallest yacht in the fleet, she offers a generous deck area and a cozy saloon as well as a bar below deck.

Kairos is a new kind of living space that allows an owner and their guests to connect, share and create by synchronously experiencing multiple environments onboard. It offers 90 meters of onboard life without boundaries, created in harmony with Oceanco’s NXT initiative on sustainability and innovation. Kairos is the result of a first-time collaboration between renowned design studio Pininfarina and large custom yacht builder Oceanco, with technical design and engineering development provided by Lateral Naval Architects. “Kairos is a remarkable Tomorrow’s Design yacht born out of a vision shared by three passionate, forward-thinking partners in Pininfarina, Lateral and Oceanco. It exemplifies how Oceanco is looking to the future through the integrated NXT approach to yacht design, tapping into the latest developments in technical and propulsion systems while also reflecting how our experience of living spaces is changing,” comments Marcel Onkenhout, Oceanco’s CEO. “When owners see the Oceanco NXT endorsement on a yacht’s design, they know they can expect to enjoy a certain elevated standard of life onboard; one that is in tune with forward-thinking perspectives on sustainability and lifestyle.”
What if your connection with a space was so profound, it allowed time to slow down? “A standard-bearer of Italian style for over 90 years, Pininfarina has developed over the years high end yachting projects through its nautical division. The continuous search for beauty and innovation resulted in Kairos, a breakthrough project designed for Oceanco. Taking inspiration from the long experience in bespoke projects – from cars to architecture – Pininfarina together with Oceanco has created a brand new yachting experience.” The yacht’s exterior has been shaped to evoke a peaceful oasis in which to relax and enjoy time on your own terms. Like a floating, living island, Kairos has a symmetrical profile with no ‘forward’ direction to aim towards. This elimination of momentum frees those onboard to live fully in the moment, without the sense of urgency to move to a new destination.
Time for a change in the design paradigm The heart of life onboard is the vast, theatrical piazza, to which all entry points of KAIROS lead. Vertically developed across three levels, the piazza breaks from the canons of conventional yacht design. Intricate design combines stunning asymmetric shapes, transparent structures and a lack of physical barriers, influenced by the contrasting, multidimensional landscapes that exist in our daily lives. It is a captivating space in which to share inspiring moments, conveying a sense of liberty and joy. The cabins on KAIROS have all been positioned on the lower level, allowing for a greater sense of space and flow across the main level’s guest areas while also delivering outstanding views in close proximity to the water. The layout on KAIROS encourages social interaction while at the same time preserves the magic of intimate moments in private places. For example, on the panoramic balcony accessed above the upper deck via an elevator, guests can enjoy a quiet moment of sanctuary while taking in the sea view.
What if a new kind of yacht could exist in harmony with the environment? KAIROS has been created to align with Oceanco’s NXT initiative on sustainability and innovation, thanks to the naval architecture and engineering development from Lateral. In recent years, the builder and naval architecture studio have partnered on a number of innovative projects including Black Pearl, the most eco- conscious yacht in the world, and Bravo Eugenia, Oceanco’s first LIFE Design superyacht that delivers a 30% increase in fuel efficiency. The creative layout of KAIROS is enabled via an innovative, all-electric propulsion and energy system architecture. The e-Hybrid system incorporates batteries as the primary means of energy delivery, permitting the varying power demands of hotel, propulsion and maneuvering loads to be seamlessly met. Diesel generators are provided for battery charging and high-speed cruising, selected free from the constraints of a conventional diesel electric and purely on the basis of efficiency and energy density. The result is an elegant solution with flexibility in space distribution and a compact arrangement that allows the primary machinery space to be accommodated within a single-tier compartment. Guest space is consequently maximized on the prized lower deck by the waterline, allowing for KAIROS’s alluring piazza to take center stage. The e-Hybrid architecture permits extensive operation with no noise, lower vibrations and zero local emissions.
“KAIROS is the first project undertaken within the Oceanco NXT initiative. Via collaboration with uniquely creative minds, the key elements of NXT have been brought into focus to deliver a next-generation-of-user experience” adds James Roy, Managing Director of Lateral. “Capable of zero-emission operation, the propulsion and energy system architecture incorporates many elements of our future-proofing strategy to ensure KAIROS will avoid technical obsolescence as emerging sustainable technologies come to market. The engineering platform we have developed has enabled greater creative freedom to realize the unique design elements of KAIROS. These have presented us with an edifying technical challenge as naval architects and engineers, and the result delivers a next- generation onboard experience.”
What is Oceanco NXT? Oceanco sees its future clients – the ones who are a good fit with the company’s outlook and culture – as being the ‘young minded’ owners who look for something unique and forward thinking in their yachts. To best serve them, it needs to understand what they will want from their yachts tomorrow, and offer solutions today. These solutions require a rethinking of everything, from assumptions about how we use the spaces we live in, to the primary drivers of why someone would want to own a yacht. In collaborating with trailblazers from inside and outside the industry to answer these questions, it became clear that we are living in a period of dynamic change. This new era demands meaningful innovation that is aligned with emerging ideologies and approaches, with a focus on heightened sustainability awareness and stewardship of the planet. What started out as a conversation about sustainable innovation in yachting quickly grew to a far wider appraisal of every aspect of life onboard, from deck arrangements and the kinds of modern spaces that best serve owners and guests, to the integration of technology and wellness. Oceanco calls this dialogue and its outputs Oceanco NXT. Like the coming together of the brightest minds in an experimental thought lab, Oceanco is working with a global collective of experts from a wide array of industries to bring fresh perspectives on its vision for the future of yachting, with inspiring results. The work on Oceanco NXT innovation never stops. It is a continual process of meaningful progress. An enduring investment in our future.

7 Bold New Superyacht Concepts We Want to See on the Water
From yachts that run on hydrogen fuel cells to a vessel with a bonkers new sailing rig, these designs may well be the future of yachting..
With record demand for new yachts by ever-younger owners, designers have been busy with fresh concepts. These seven concepts go far beyond tweaking the beach club or adding a few windows. They flirt with hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion, glass-bottomed swimming pools to light lower decks, and even hidden pilothouses using augmented reality to navigate the yacht.
What’s more, they explore much larger concepts of the use of space, and how owners and guests actually use the superyachts. Three-deck glass atriums, huge piazzas and nature parks bring new opportunities for life on board—and free up the imagination to explore possibilities.
Kairos By Oceanco, Pininfarina and Lateral
Kairos , officially launched by Oceanco at September’s Monaco Yacht Show , is a new way of thinking about onboard life. The 295-foot design combines asymmetric shapes, transparent structures and few physical barriers, all culminating in its vast piazza, which is the most dramatic area of this forward-thinking concept. The Dutch yacht builder partnered with Italian design firm Pininfarina, with technical assistance from Lateral Naval Architects.
Beyond the beautiful spaces—including a number of suites on the lower decks, and a panoramic balcony on the top deck, the hull has an asymmetric shape, with no clear bow, so it can move in opposite directions. The design team choose to think of Kairos as a “living, floating island,” rather than a conventional superyacht. “A 360-degree approach to design at once connects you to the sea below, to the light above and to the spaces and people beside you,” said Paolo Pininfarina, regarding the concept. “It nourishes your curiosity on an instinctive level and encourages you to explore new experiences and perspectives.”
The yacht also has sustainability in mind, with all-electric propulsion in its diesel-hybrid configuration. The e-Hybrid architecture permits extensive operation with no noise, lower vibrations and zero local emissions.
Alice by Lürssen
German boatbuilder Lürssen has ventured down the rabbit hole with its first ever superyacht concept, the 321.5-foot Alice . Inspired by Alice in Wonderland , the five-deck climate-neutral yacht features a floating, pod-like superstructure, which houses the owner’s deck and bridge, and an open-air main deck. “The design takes inspiration from the small ferries in Amsterdam where the captain sits in a pilot deck above, and below is a passage way for people to pass through,” Jim Sluijter, lead exterior designer told Robb Report.
A full-sized Padel court sits aft, with a dance floor, bar and dining area amidships, and forward a Japanese-themed garden with ponds, greenery and a bridge. A floating glass-bottomed pool suspended across an opening in the sun deck adds wow factor. Powered by emission-free fuel cells that generate electrical energy based on hydrogen, Alice is also equipped with a methanol engine for higher speed and energy demands. A waste heat recovery system, organically farmed wood and eight lower deck guest suites complete the offering, with interior design by Dasha Moranova Designs.
Apache Concept by Tankoa
Tankoa Yachts introduces a new technical platform with its 249-foot T760 Apache concept. Key to the design is a 31-foot “flying” glass-bottomed pool suspended in the bow between the upper deck and main deck; it begins at the foot of the bed in the owner’s suite and filters light into the semi-open lounge and gym on the deck below.
The lower deck beach club with folding side terraces delivers over 1,300-square-feet of chic resort space and the yacht’s second pool. When the folding platforms are closed, one-way glass the same color as the hull creates a private lounge area with views out to sea. “We created a gym and wellness space on two levels for the guests to enjoy,” designer Alberto Mancini told Robb Report. “We also wanted to avoid the typical dark cave effect found on many beach clubs.”
But the best seat in the house is reserved for the cozy observation lounge or crow’s nest with panoramic vistas high above the water, ideal for enjoying the last rays at sunset.
Scintilla by Tillberg Design
At 393 feet, Scintilla is a modern voyager conceived for world cruising. We recently reported on her sister concept, Mimer . A collaboration between DreamLiner Yachting, IYC, Tillberg Design of Sweden and Laurent Giles Naval Architects, the concept is designed to welcome 36 guests and 44 crew and puts fuel-efficiency at the fore. Scintilla can accommodate hybrid engines, as well as a combination battery and alternative fuel system, and eco-conscious materials have been used on the interior and exterior spaces. However, all eyes are on the smorgasbord of explorative toys and tenders, which blows the standard wakeboard and paddle board offering out the water. The dedicated toy area has room for a seaplane, submarine, foldable catamaran, expedition RIBS, amphibious and land vehicles, jet skis, quads and a helicopter. At the end of a long day, a multi-level owners’ suite, comprising the aft portion of the bridge and heli-decks, opens onto a private deck complete with Jacuzzi and infinity pool to rejuvenate aching muscles.
Merveille 253W by Merveille Yachting
The 253-foot Merveille 253W is a sailing yacht with a difference. With a focus on reducing fuel consumption and increasing efficiency, the explorer concept, produced in partnership with Feadship, features a new wind-assisted propulsion system that doesn’t require rigging. Designed by AYRO, the fully automated Oceanwings can rotate 360 degrees, have an adjustable camber and twist and can retract when furled. When under sail using the Oceanwings, underwater turbines regenerate the kinetic energy to recharge the battery packs. The yacht is also equipped with wind turbines and solar panels for additional sources of renewable energy. A large, uncluttered deck space combined with a 63-foot beam creates a sense of calm. A sunken swimming pool on the bow is the matching Zen detail.
One 50 by Meyer Yachts
Startup brand Meyer Yachts recently announced a new concept called One 50, which is a 150-meter (492-foot) six-deck superyacht that will have accommodations for 44 guests, a two-level spa, a real movie theater with adjoining billiard room, an entertainment area with a stage, an art gallery and a huge infinity pool. Oh, and it will be powered by fuel cells and battery banks, so will generate zero carbon emissions. The system will generate 25,000 kilowatts giving this gigayacht a maximum speed of 23 knots.
Pure by Feadship
Feadship’s 268-foot Pure , also unveiled at the Monaco Yacht Show, has at least one revolutionary feature—it places the traditional pilothouse below-decks, in a cabin that uses augmented-reality visualization that connects with radar, AIS, maps, depth sounders and cameras. That will allow the captain to see everything virtually—perhaps more than looking through the windshields of the pilothouse—with all necessary navigation information at hand. This kind of helm has been used on naval vessels like submarines, but never on a superyacht. Feadship said that the concept was embraced by many captains, particularly younger ones who are comfortable with technology.
Pure also has other breakthrough designs like a three-deck elliptical glass atrium, retractable glass-bottomed Jacuzzi amidships, and a large beach club with three fold-down balconies aft and both sides. Located half inside, half out, the atrium incorporates large slabs of glass to provide a clear line of sight across three of the five decks. Filling the interior with natural light, the vast central space means guests must look to private balconies for privacy.
Pure was also designed with flexible “energy-hybrid” propulsion that would evolve over time. From diesel electric in 2024, to hydrogen in 2027, to all-methanol fuel cells in 2030, the concept is designed to respond to advancing technology, depending on which sustainable fuels become most viable.

Oceanco, Pininfarina and Lateral Unveil KAIROS Yacht Concept
The trio offer a glimpse into the future of sustainable superyachts.
By Emma Al-Mousawi
Three giants of the yachting world have joined forces to catapult yacht design into the future with a newly unveiled sustainable superyacht concept named KAIROS.
The ambitious project aims to push the boundaries of what is possible and is a first-time collaboration between the Italian design studio Pininfarina, British-based Lateral Naval Architects and Dutch custom yacht builder Oceanco.
Little has been disclosed about KAIROS as of yet but the team behind the vessel has emphasized that sustainability is the central pillar of the superyacht’s design, which features a E-Hybrid propulsion system that uses batteries as a primary source of power.
The revelation of KAIROS has come less than six months after the October 2020 launch of Oceanco’s NXT initiative on sustainability and innovation. The initiative hopes to use the power of cross-industry collaboration – bringing together leaders in yachting, technology and design – to forge a sustainable pathway forward for the future of superyacht creation.

As the project progresses, KAIROS will provide the first tangible insight into the NXT initiative’s creative output the team is hoping to demonstrate how the latest technology of today can help to influence and build a greener industry for tomorrow.

Oceanco’s CEO, Marcel Onkenhout said : “KAIROS is a remarkable vision shared by three passionate, forward-thinking partners: Pininfarina, Lateral and Oceanco. When Owners see the Oceanco NXT endorsement on a yacht’s design, they know they can expect elevated standards of life onboard that are in tune with new perspectives on sustainability and lifestyle.”
With regards to the design concept behind KAIROS, Paolo Pininfarina, chairman of Pininfarina said: “Our passion as designers is to imagine new concepts of space that are capable of bringing enchantment to every moment of the yachting experience.”
Oceanco plans to release more information on KAIROS – named after the ancient Greek word for “opportune moment” – in the coming months.

Kairos by Oceanco and Pininfarina – stunning and timeless superyachting
- Monaco Yacht Show

- Top stories
Phil Draper reports on Kairos a 90m concept from Oceanco and Pininfarina which debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show, designed to operate much of the time with zero environmental impact.
Oceanco’s latest concept Kairos takes ‘sustainable yachting’ to a whole new level. This 90m what-could-be vision debuted at the Monaco Yacht Show earlier this week. The design reimagines how space aboard can be utilised and how sustainable yachting can be and how it can develop into the future for right-minded owners.
Kairos is the result of a creative huddle between the Dutch superyacht builder’s ‘NXT’ think tank, the naval architects at Lateral in the UK, and that Italian design and engineering giant Pininfarina, which has not only been responsible for some of the world’s most iconic car creations of the past nine decades, but has also been regularly making waves in the marine industry, not least recently working with Princess on its foiling R35 and more radically styled X Series motor yachts.
In terms of onboard spaces, Kairos proposes an alternative interaction between guests and crew, especially less segregation. All the usual features will be there, of course – everything from palatial cabins, lounges and dining areas inside and out, not to mention balconies and beach clubs, helicopter capabilities and garages packed with tenders and toys – but at the heart of the yacht think Italian ‘piazza’, an open meeting space with views to the sky.

Everywhere else the use of glass opens up share spaces in fabulous new ways. Think walking down a sidewalk in New York and looking up at the skyscrapers and sky, says Kevin Rice, Pinifarina’s chief creative officer.
Walk through this boat, he says, and you will look up and see the decks above and the mast towering above. Then look to one side and you see the sea and to the other family space or a restaurant. This is the special thinking behind the very special Kairos experience.
An important starting point in the creative process was to not think about boats, says Rice, because boats are about moving from somewhere to somewhere.
A key goal with this project was to pause the conventional passage of time, to create a timeless environment, where various aspects of life can co-exist – work, family and play – and regardless of where the yacht happens to be in the world.
Is this just another whacky concept? Oceanco is emphatic it represents an authentic step forward, meaning what is proposed could actually be built today with present technologies.
Instead of suggesting an infeasible net zero environmental impact all of the time, which is not possible presently, the Kairos ‘E-Hybrid’ solution could realistically operate for 70% of the day with zero impact, says James Roy, managing director at Lateral.
Perhaps more important still is this design’s ability to adapt as technology and expectations evolve, especially as regards developments in battery technology. Such things will become increasingly important now as cruising grounds begin to restrict access for polluting vessels. Roy says, while they aspire to “total zero” which isn’t yet possible, they can already deliver “local zero”.
Although capable of becoming a reality, Kairos has not been developed with any one client in mind. Rather it is intended to appeal to more people and probably more younger people than Oceanco’s traditional gigayacht clientele, and especially those with a genuine interest in sustainability and perhaps that coming to yachting without the usual preconceptions. It is about fostering the right sort of conversations.

The 90m KAIROS is a concept designed by Oceanco and Italian design studio Pininfarina in 2021.
KAIROS is the result of a first-time collaboration between Oceanco and renowned design studio Pininfarina, with technical design and engineering development provided by Lateral Naval Architects. Like a floating, living island, KAIROS has a symmetrical profile with no ‘forward’ direction to aim towards. The heart of life onboard is the vast, theatrical piazza, to which all entry points of KAIROS lead. The creative layout of KAIROS is enabled via an innovative, all-electric propulsion and energy system architecture. The e-Hybrid system incorporates batteries as the primary means of energy delivery.
