Your Hosts and our Captains

Captain david.

Captain David learned how to sail at the age of 16 on the south shore of Long Island. David started Tribeca Sailing in 2013 to share his passion for sailing with the world. He fills his sails with facts about New York City, stories about personal experiences, and expert sailing techniques. In short, Captain David wants you to enjoy your boat tour and sail. He is a United States Coast Guard Licensed Master.

Captain Clark

Captain Clark joined Tribeca Sailing’s team this year and has quickly become a valued member.  Captain Clark has an extensive sail training record and a history as a video producer.   He has an extreme passion for sailing and loves to share that passion with our guests.  He is a United States Coast Guard Licensed Master.

Captain Matt

With a sailing resume too long to post, it is fair to say, “What hasn’t Captain Matt done!”.  From offshore experience to captaining large schooners, he has done it all.  We are proud to have Captain Matt on the Tribeca Sailing’s team.  He could work anywhere but loves sailing our boat Tara where he really gets to shine.  He is a United States Coast Guard Licensed Master.

Manhattan By Sail

To Us, Sailing is About Prevailing.

At Manhattan by Sail, we’re the venue for some of your most unforgettable experiences…and so much more. We are sailors who count ourselves as fortunate enough to sail the prevailing winds of the world’s most iconic harbor. We’ve been taking people sailing in New York Harbor since 1972, when a salty welder named Nick van Nes sailed his 70-ft. yawl, Petrel, to The Battery. He built a dock, put up a sign…and slowly, the first passenger sailboat in New York started to draw attention from locals.

Today, aboard the  Shearwater  and  Clipper City , we share the joy of sailing our beautiful harbor with visitors and New Yorkers alike. Offering an incomparable setting for your outing, we’ve developed into a world-class venue. On board during our specialty sails, you can enjoy the sweetness of live jazz music, local craft beers, spicy performances from some of NYC’s premier burlesque performers, and more. But some things have remained the same since the beginning: our passion, commitment, and our caring, enthusiastic crew who sail each day with their whole hearts. At Manhattan By Sail, we welcome you aboard to share in our joyful culture and to join us in falling in love with NYC, over and over again.

Looking back, there have been challenges: through the early days of a new business, through 9/11, through restorations, growth and setbacks we worked to preserve the traditional art of sailing and everything that it encompasses: sewing sails, welding, woodworking, navigation, and preserving old boats steeped in history. We have created our own marvelous ecosystem and trained hundreds in the traditional craft of sailing. We know that with grit, teamwork, determination and resilience anything is possible.

It’s why we’re here today and why we’ve been able to provide such positive experiences to so many (see our reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor ).

We have prevailed. We are proud to be here today. And we are honored to have introduced hundreds of thousands to the sublime pleasures of sailing NYC’s waterways.

Thank you for letting us be part of your New York experience; your patronage supports a legacy.

Whether you’re a visitor or a lifelong New Yorker, we invite you to see Manhattan through new eyes and feel reinvigorated.

Be part of this.

Sunset Sail

Private sunset cruise nyc.

purple and pink sky behind the Statue of Liberty during a sunset cruise in NYC

Living the Dream in Technicolor

On a private sunset sail, the sky is your personal amphitheater, vast and unobstructed, the perfect showcase for nature’s color and light show. The sunset casts a kaleidoscope of glowing hues into the sky and water, with the glass skyscrapers bouncing them right back. From the deck of a private boat charter NYC, decked out in the finest luxuries, sunsets are more intense and breathtaking.

Vogue Vibes: Sailing Into The Golden Hour

Experience the “Golden Hour” on a sunset boat cruise NYC —where the skyline transforms into a shimmering tapestry, and Lady Liberty gets a Hollywood-worthy touch-up. The phrase gets its name from the hour prior to sunset, when the sun begins to dip low on the horizon, shedding the day’s florescent lighting for a soft, golden radiance. On a sunset boat ride NYC, guests look like they just stepped out of a Vogue photoshoot. Even Lady Liberty transforms, appearing as a golden goddess holding court over the NY Harbor. Cheers to the hour when the city, and everyone in it, becomes pure gold.

Sailing in Style: White Glove Service

Add a splash of extravagance to your NYC sunset cruise. Select the open bar package with unlimited drinks and an appetizer. Choose from a full menu of catering, champagne, wine, and beer. Feeling festive? Sprinkle celebratory magic with our decoration services — rose garlands and bouquets for romantic dates and swoon-worthy proposals, or birthday streamers and birthday signs for someone’s special day. Sail away with a touch of glam and a downright fabulous experience.

Sunset Sailing: Luxe Farewell to the Day

Bid farewell to the day lounging on a plush deck, wine in hand, and the gentle sway of the sailboat lull you into deep comfort. Let the city shoreline recede and the hustle fade into the horizon. Your sunset boat tour NYC should be a serene experience without the hassles. Slip into luxurious onboard accommodations — 3 lounges, kitchenette, lavatory, and premium captain and crew service. Enjoy the perfect sunset boat ride NYC.

27 high school students, 2 adults rescued after rowing boats capsize in Long Island Sound

WABC logo

WESTPORT, Connecticut (WABC) -- Nearly 30 people, including 27 high school students and two adults, were rescued when their rowing boats capsized in Connecticut on Wednesday.

First responders rescued the group off the coast of Westport just after 5 p.m. Authorities say the water temperature in Long Island Sound was about 44 degrees.

Two sculling boats with the private Saugatuck Rowing Club capsized as the water became rough during a weather change. The rough conditions sent 18 people into waters off Compo Beach, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said at a news conference.

Officials say some of the people in the water were swimming to shore and others were trying to get into other boats.

When the people in the water tried to get on a third, larger boat, it began to sink, sending more people into the water, authorities said.

The Coast Guard joined local police and firefighters in the rescue mission.

First responders used boats to rescue many of the people, while others were able to swim ashore. Two people were brought to a hospital with suspected hypothermia.

"This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome," Koskinas said.

The teens, all male, ranged in age from 14 to 18. The two adults were instructors.

Everyone was out of the water and safe within about 50 minutes, Koskinas said.

The teens were put on a school bus to get warm and were picked up by their parents, he said.

Authorities said they are investigating why the boats capsized, with the goal of preventing similar incidents.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

National News | 18 high school rowers, 1 adult rescued from Long Island Sound after boat capsizes off Connecticut

US Coast Guard (Shutterstock)

More details have emerged in the capsizing of boats carrying high school students off Westport in Long Island Sound, revealing what police called a “chaotic scene” involving three boats and 19 people plucked from 44-degree water .

It was just after 5 p.m. Wednesday when Westport police, fire and emergency responders were called to Connecticut’s Compo Beach for “numerous people in the water” after their boat had capsized.

“Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore, arriving by boat , and some still in the water near Cockenoe Island,” Westport police said in a statement.

An organized scramble ensued to tend to those who had already made it to shore, while locating and recovering those still in the water. Two of the people were treated at a local hospital for suspected hypothermia and injuries that were not life-threatening, and were released Thursday morning , Norwalk newspaper The Hour reported.

The incident involved three 60-foot-long rowing sculls and one chase boat that had left the private Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport, Conn. Each scull was carrying nine male rowers aged 14-18, with their coach in the chase boat, police said.

The trouble started when they got near Cockenoe Island, about a mile from shore, and the weather suddenly changed. As the rowers attempted to return to the club onshore, the sculls began taking on water, and two of the boats capsized, pitching 18 people into the water, police said.

They swam to the chase boat and clung to the side, but that boat also sank, tumbling a 19th person overboard. The rowing club sent another chase boat, which started shuttling people to the Compo Beach Marina.

In a briefing Wednesday night, Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said it took about 50 minutes to pluck everyone from the water. The kids were warmed on a school bus provided by the district until their parents could fetch them.

One of the capsized sculls had yet to be recovered Thursday, police told WTNH. The sunken chase boat was scheduled to be towed ashore Thursday afternoon.

Koskinas lauded the team effort, which included rescue assistance from six agencies in nearby towns, as well as eight ambulances from three companies, and 20 personnel.

“We are grateful for our surrounding agencies who assisted us with this incident and remind our communities that when a large-scale event like this happens, we all show up to help,” Foti said in the police statement, adding at the news conference, “This was a very serious incident with an incredibly good outcome.”

Abbott’s Army on the Border: Is It Working?

The Texas governor, Greg Abbott, has spent $10 billion building his own border security network. In Eagle Pass, where it has been concentrated, far fewer migrants have been crossing this year.

Reporting from Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras, Mexico

  • Published March 23, 2024 Updated March 24, 2024

For many months, the small border city of Eagle Pass, Texas, has provided the backdrop for a bitter legal battle between Gov. Greg Abbott and the Biden administration over how best to handle record numbers of migrants arriving at the border. The court fights, which intensified this week, have centered on claims that the border is in crisis.

But recently, the opposite has been happening along the Rio Grande as it curves its way through Eagle Pass: In an area that last year was the epicenter of unauthorized migration along the southern border, far fewer migrants have been crossing.

Mr. Abbott has cited the slowdown as evidence that his aggressive attempt to push the boundaries of immigration law and his $10 billion program to harden the state’s border with Mexico — using National Guard troops, razor wire, helicopters, boats and floating buoys in the Rio Grande — has been working.

Workers in camouflage uniforms and yellow hard hats install fencing along the edge of a river.

“The cartels have rerouted their routes to cross the border because Texas is the only state that’s putting up any resistance,” Mr. Abbott said during a news conference in Eagle Pass last month, flanked by more than a dozen Republican governors.

If the federal government did what Texas is doing, Mr. Abbott added, “you would eliminate illegal immigration overnight.”

But exactly what dynamics are at work in the shifting border numbers are still a matter of debate.

Federal officials have said that changes in the handling of migrants by the Mexican government were responsible for a sharp drop-off in arrivals all along the border after record highs in December. Immigration experts said crossings often decline in colder months only to rebound in the spring.

But what is clear is that fewer have been coming by way of Texas.

The latest publicly available federal data on border encounters, released on Friday, has shown a measurable shift to the west in recent months, away from Texas — which makes up 1,254 miles of the nearly 2,000-mile southern border — and into New Mexico, Arizona and California.

In February, Border Patrol agents recorded about 87,000 encounters with migrants in California and Arizona, versus 53,000 in Texas. Last year, the numbers were essentially reversed: around 55,000 encounters took place outside of Texas versus 76,000 recorded in the state. (The overall crossings were slightly higher this February.)

“There are a few reasons, and Texas’ policies are one of them,” said Adam Isacson, who focuses on borders and migration at the Washington Office on Latin America. He said more than anything else, it appeared to be fear of the uncertain legal landscape — particularly Texas’ looming migrant arrest law known as Senate Bill 4, which passed in December — that has caused many migrants to avoid the state.

“People aren’t worried about buoys and barbed wire,” he added. “The fear of the unknown with S.B. 4 is driving people to choose to avoid Texas.”

The law was put on hold this week by a federal appeals court amid a challenge to its constitutionality by the Biden administration. The postponement has persuaded at least some migrants to try to get across before it goes into effect .

Richi Silva, 32, a native of Venezuela, who secured an immigration appointment with federal agents in Brownsville, Texas, said he had seen hundreds of migrants on the other side of the border, waiting to cross.

Still, the westward shift of migrants has been evident in one of Mr. Abbott’s most politically successful border efforts: his program to bus migrants to Democratic cities like New York, Chicago and Denver.

Since January, the number of buses has sharply declined. Nearly all the buses are now traveling from El Paso, where a large federal processing center handles migrants who cross into New Mexico, as well as into Texas. Very few are leaving from former migration hot spots in Texas such as McAllen, Brownsville and Eagle Pass.

“They’re being apprehended in New Mexico and they’re just being processed in El Paso,” said Lieutenant Chris Olivarez, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. “There really hasn’t been much happening here.”

A spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not respond to a request for details on federal apprehensions.

Patterns of migration often shift as smugglers look for the easiest places to cross amid a patchwork of enforcement along the border.

And the overall decline in crossings between December and January coincided with changes in the handling and deportation of migrants by Mexico in those months, a factor cited by the U.S. authorities.

“We have received very, very few,” said Valeria Wheeler, the executive director of Mission: Border Hope in Eagle Pass, as she walked through the nonprofit’s cavernous new shelter building in the center of the city. The facility, which opened last fall, resembles the terminal of a medium-sized airport. Rows and rows of metal chairs sat empty during a visit one day this week. Only three migrants were in the shelter. On a given day in December, there would have been between 800 and 1,200, Ms. Wheeler said.

“It’s a cycle,” she added. “We’re prepared for when more come.”

At a shelter for migrants in the Mexican city of Piedras Negras, across the border from Eagle Pass, Pastor Israel Rodriguez, who runs the shelter, said that he had noticed a steep decline not long after the U.S. secretary of state, Antony J. Blinken, and other top American officials traveled to Mexico in December asking for that country to intervene.

“They are stopping them before they get to us,” Pastor Rodriguez said of Mexican officials. The officials then bring the migrants back deeper into Mexico, he said. “They drop them in the middle of the country, and they start their journey back to the border, this time avoiding the checkpoints.”

Yessenia Navarrete Corea, 40, who traveled from Nicaragua and hoped to reach a sister in Arkansas, said she had seen migrants she was traveling with stopped and diverted by Mexican officers. She had an appointment with U.S. border officials, secured with the federal government’s immigration app, which she believed may have allowed her to continue her journey.

Still, she said, Mr. Abbott’s border security program and his harsh rhetoric made her uneasy. “I pray that God softens his heart,” she said of the Texas governor. “I want him to know that we migrants are not bad people.”

Along the river, National Guard troops ordered up by the governor patrol the banks and steer small boats in the river, ready to respond to large groups of migrants. They work alongside U.S. Border Patrol agents to help people who may be struggling in the water.

Tensions have flared between the two agencies over their differing approaches to migrants trying to get ashore.

When migrants approach the border fencing, National Guard troops have been directed to tell them to return to Mexico . State police officers do the same or, if the migrants step onto private land where the owner has given permission to conduct such law enforcement operations, officers arrest them on charges of criminal trespassing.

The federal agents, by contrast, may help them ashore and transport them to federal processing centers. Some are then rapidly deported. Others are given permission to travel to cities across the country to await their immigration hearings.

In recent days, migrants in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, across the border from El Paso, have appeared to be trying to time their crossings to avoid National Guard soldiers and instead reach Border Patrol agents to surrender to them.

A widely seen video released this week showed dozens of migrants in El Paso pulling down fencing and pushing their way past National Guard troops .

Such scenes have not been evident lately in Eagle Pass. During a visit this week, no migrants could be seen crossing the river near the park that Mr. Abbott has turned into a kind of military encampment. At times, the chirps of grackle flocks, sounding much like radio static, cut through the air.

Lieutenant Olivarez, of the public safety department, said only a handful of migrants had been caught trespassing on private land in recent days. The numbers were down enough that state police officers had cut down on the frequency of their patrols, he said.

For now, he said, everyone is waiting to see if the federal courts will allow the state’s new immigration law to go into effect. It would allow state and local police officers to arrest unauthorized migrants anywhere, not just on private land, and Texas courts could then order them out of the country.

If the law goes into effect, he said, there will probably be many new patrols.

Dozens of high school students, 2 adults from Connecticut rowing club rescued after boats capsize

By Katie Houlis, CBS New York Team, Alecia Reid

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Nearly 30 members of a Connecticut rowing club, including more than two dozen high schoolers, were rescued from the  Long Island Sound  on Wednesday after their boats capsized.

Police said just before 5 p.m., three rowing sculls and one chase boat launched from Saugatuck Rowing Club in  Westport . Each rowing scull carried nine rowers, all males between the ages of 14-18. The chase boat was operated by one coach.

Rowing club releases statement

The Saugatuck Rowing Club released a statement about the rescue, thanking emergency responders.

"First and foremost, we are grateful that all 29 individuals involved in the incident are safe and accounted for. Two students had hypothermia and were taken to Norwalk Hospital, and they have recovered. Our rower's well-being remains our utmost priority, and we commend the swift and effective response of the authorities involved in ensuring their rescue. As with any outdoor sport, rowing inherently involves certain risks, and our club takes comprehensive measures to prioritize safety. However, despite thorough planning and adherence to safety protocols, unexpected weather changes can occur, as was the case in this instance. We are currently conducting a review of the incident to understand the circumstances fully and to identify any areas where our safety procedures can be further strengthened. In the meantime, we would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all emergency responders involved: Marine Police, Firefighters, EMTs and The Coast Guard, for their professionalism and dedication in ensuring the safety of our young rowers and coaches. Saugatuck Rowing Club remains dedicated to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all members, and we appreciate the continued support of our community during this time."

What led to the rowing accident?

According to police, as the boats reached Cockenoe Island, the weather began to change and they tried to head back to the club, but two of the rowing sculls began to take on water and capsized, throwing 18 students into the water. Some of the students then swam to the chase boat and hung onto the side, which caused the chase boat to sink.

Sixteen-year-old Davis Evans was on one of the boats that capsized and had to be rescued.

"It was really scary. I'm still kinda shaken up," he said. "It was really clean and then really right as we spun, it just, it got windy and the waves were just crashing into our boat and it was just filling up with water. It was really scary."

Police say a second coach launched another chase boat from the rowing club and began to shuttle people to Compo Beach Marina as first responders were sent to the scene.

"We had dispatch reports that were coming from 911 calls from the actual incident on the water. So the first calls were actually from someone [who] reported that they were in a capsized boat and in the water," Westport Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Marsan said.

According to police, the temperature of the water was approximately 44 degrees at the time.

Chaotic scene in water and on shore

"Responding units found a chaotic scene of youths swimming to shore. Some of them were arriving by boat. Some were swimming. Some were still in the water between Compo Beach and Cockenoe Island," Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas said. "First responders immediately began providing care to those individuals who were on shore and coordinating the recovery of people in the water."

"When we finally got back on the beach, we had to run back on the beach towards the trucks and we were, like, falling and stuff. We couldn't really walk. It was rough," Davis said.

The rescues

A total of 27 high school students and two adults were rescued, with at least 12 rowers being pulled out of the water by Westport Marine Police and the Westport Fire Department.

Police say the last victim was recovered from the water around 6 p.m. -- somewhere between 48-52 minutes after the boats capsized.

Two students were taken to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. The rest of the victims were treated on the scene.

"Team effort"

"This was truly an incredible team effort by all. By the coaches that were involved from the rowing club and by all the first responders," Koskinas said.

When asked if he'll be back on the water any time soon, Davis said, "Yeah, rowing is my sport. It's what I do."

We reached out to Saugatuck Rowing Club, but they declined to comment.

The police chief says they're still looking into exactly what happened out on the water. The goal of the investigation is to work with community partners to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.

Carnival freedom cruise ship catches fire for second time in less than 2 years.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

The Carnival Freedom cruise ship experienced its second fire in less than two years, and passenger footage caught the flames with smoke coming from the ship’s exhaust funnel Saturday afternoon.

“That’s nutty,” X user @breezebreeze_ can be heard while showing the fire aboard the ship.

Carnival Cruise Line put out several tweet replies regarding the incident they say happened at 3:15 ET.

“Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel,” one of the posts read. “The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to Princess Cay due to weather.”

The news prompted passengers of the ship’s upcoming departure from Port Canaveral on Monday to ask the cruise line if their itinerary would go off as planned.

“Is the cruise for the Carnival Freedom March 25 departing cruise from Port Canaveral still planning on going?” one X user asked Carnival. “We need to know for travel purposes!”

Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel March 23, 2024.

“I can almost guarantee it’ll be canceled,” another X user wrote about the ship’s next planned cruise. “This isn’t the first time this has happened ironically to this ship, and the following sailing when it happened that time were canceled, but obviously not confirm[ed].”

Carnival quickly responded to quell any rumors, saying it does not expect any impact on the next Carnival Freedom voyage.

The Freedom’s exhaust funnel caught fire in May 2022 while the ship was docked at Grand Turk Island in Turks and Caicos. Video from then also showed the ship’s funnel – referred to by some as the whale tail – consumed by flames and smoke.

Footage shows a Carnival Cruise ship on fire in Turks and Caicos in 2022.

The part of the ship that caught fire is designed to help direct the flow of exhaust gases away from the ship, according to the Crown Cruise Vacations website.

“The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames,” Carnival said about Saturday’s fire. “Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike and that is being investigated.”

Carnival said the captain made “multiple announcements to guests and crew” about the fire. The port side of the funnel fell onto Deck 10, Carnival said. No injuries were reported.

The Carnival Freedom was in Freeport as scheduled Sunday, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival said there are no operational issues with the ship’s systems.
