The 92 Viking is the flagship of the Viking fleet and this 2018 92 Enclosed/Skybridge may well be the standard by which all 92 Vikings should be compared. She is appropriately named as the owner made no compromises in building this yacht with every desirable option and with only the highest quality accessories, electronics, and décor selections.

No Compromise is accented with a complete custom teak package that includes all decks, including the skybridge and bow tip. The custom superyacht Shinkai was recently transferred from Feadship ’s construction hallway in Aalsmeer to the builder’s outside dock for final outfitting ahead of her sea trials. She is the eighth superyacht to be launched from Philippe Briand’ s Vitruvius Yachts studio, with construction and co-naval architecture carried out by Feadship De Vries, while Daniela Boutsen has provided her interior design. Together, the eminent group has pushed the boundaries of what might be considered both a superyacht and an explorer at the same time. And herein lay the challenge for Briand and his team.

“This is a special project for us, as Shinkai is the second yacht that we have designed for her owner. In fact, he was the first yachtsman to embrace the benefits of Vitruvius’s efficient hulls,” says Philippe Briand. The result is a 55m, 974GT motor yacht demonstrating the following characteristics:   •    High-tech Adventurous Shinkai can reach the most remote places on the planet. She is ice-classed and stabilized by a vast mono gyroscope, which has never been specified on a yacht of this scale before. The 23-tonne gyroscope is particularly important for operations of the submersible, which needs a perfectly stable launching platform. It is also beneficial when navigating through waters at high latitudes, replacing conventional fin stabilisers which are at risk of being damaged by ice and flotsam, and are inefficient at low speeds.

•    Explorer Shinkai carries a wide variety serious toys, such as her 7,400kg U-Boat Worx submersible for three passengers. “I imagine it would have made Jean Jacques Cousteau jealous of such bright possibility to explore underwater!” adds Briand. The yacht’s design includes an extended aft deck to support the toys that make for a truly adventurous expedition, including 4×4 land vehicle, a large limousine tender, and multiple robust RIBs.

•    Aesthetic The Vitruvius “touch of design” assures the seamless integration of both “facets” of the project: an attractive superyacht and a powerful explorer. The high freeboard and superstructure are cut by a set of longitudinal lines, each having its own movement and raison d’être.

A departure from the characteristic low-profile aesthetic of Vitruvius Yachts, Shinkai spans four decks plus an observatory setting, in order that the spaces inside meet the detailed requirements of the very experienced client. The owner’s cabin is positioned forward in the superstructure, with an exceptional area of 73sqm and a 135-degree view through full-height reinforced windows. There are four further guest suites, while seven cabins for 12 crew complete the accommodations.

With Shinkai ’s far-reaching cruising plans to explore the planet comes the responsibility to be environmentally sensitive in her operations, which Philippe Briand took into account when designing her hull lines. Even with the yacht’s generous displacement of 974GT, her hull resistance has been optimised to deliver a reasonable fuel consumption of 19.5L per nautical mile at a cruising speed of 12 knots.

Once she is delivered, her owner plans to extensively cruise around the world, from the frigid polar regions to the warmer tropics on the equator. With the capabilities afforded by her submersible and other toys, Shinkai is primed to provide those onboard with the chance to explore the oceans in three dimensions, both at the surface and well beneath it, too.

Spirit 111: a yacht of no compromise

Building the most eco-friendly yacht in the world. It was an assignment the British Spirit Yachts received   loud and clear . For the renowned boat builder however, the superyacht owners wishes were right up   their street . Integrating modern technology into classic designs is what has been driving Spirit Yachts for decades. Nevertheless, the Spirit 111 remained a challenging process with exceptional wishes. In more than one way.

The climate change discussion is a hot topic. Not surprisingly, more and more owners in the sailing community are rethinking their carbon footprint. An ongoing trend according to managing director at Spirit Yachts, Nigel Stuart: ”Certain owners are approaching us knowing they want an eco-friendly yacht.  In these cases, we work with the owners to deliver on their goals and suggest new ways in which we can innovate to make the yacht as sustainable as possible. Other owners come to us knowing they want a Spirit and as discussions evolve they realize what we are capable of and opt for more eco-friendly solutions.” The extent to which boats are made eco-friendly vary greatly. One owner opts for a near-total self-sufficiency, while others go for fuel efficiency. ”To whatever extent it is, it’s not hard to sell,'” Stuart says. ”Often the eco-friendly option wins on other credentials, such as cost or weight for example. Half the projects in the yard at the moment are electric drive yachts.”

In order to meet the eco-wishes of Spirit 111’s owner, Spirit Yachts collaborated with leading marine and automotive suppliers. ”We analyzed every aspect of the Spirit 111 and asked ourselves if we could approach it in a more sustainable way,” Stuart explains. “The electric propulsion system is the most innovative example. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system, using a 100kW engine, will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. The propulsion system will regenerate the four BMW lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. It is important to the owner that he can spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays. By using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is the adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels.”

Not only in the engine room, but also with regard to the interior, Spirit Yachts has made some remarkably durable arrangements. ”She has energy efficient interior systems, lighting and winches, as well as recyclable sails and of course she is built from sustainable timber.  The yacht will last 100 years, but if she ever does reach the end of her lifetime, her component parts can be recycled or re-used and her wooden interior and hull can be used for anything from furniture to fencing or even another boat,” according to Stuart.

However, anyone who sees the interior of the yacht will not immediately notice its durability. It is mainly the exceptional design that attracts attention. Everything is rounded. No line is straight. Everything fits seamlessly down to the smallest detail. In collaboration with the external design agency Rhoades Young, the exceptional ideas finally came to life on paper. ”Often interior yacht design is about maximizing the space to provide as much as possible in terms of storage, accommodation etc. Spirit 111 is the opposite; the interior has always been about  a esthetic and practicality,” says Stuart. ”The curved wooden doors were particularly challenging.  Not only creating the shape and fitting the doors, but also the ‘invisible’ door handles. Instead of a conventional handle, the doors have a notch or hole to place your hand in order to operate a sensor that opens the door automatically.”

With all of its eccentric demands, the Spirit 111 may give the impression of not being the most easy yacht to sail. Nothing could be further from the truth. Stuart explains: ‘Most of our owners lead busy working lives so they dream of being able to get away from it all with their family and friends.  Whilst our yachts look detailed and complicated, they are relatively easy to handle, so most Spirit owners go cruising with very little professional help or no crew at all. We strongly believe in encouraging people to go sailing in any way they feel comfortable. Enjoyment out on the water is the most important thing, whether you are an owner-driver with no support or if you have a skipper and full professional crew.’’

Jefferies CEO promises he’s still ‘extremely bullish’ despite selling $65 million in stock to buy himself a luxury yacht from a client

Jefferies’ boss Richard Handler is not your average investment banking CEO: He’s a minor Instagram celebrity who tells his fans to protect their work-life balance —and he’s just taken a leaf out of his own book by splashing out on a “gift to himself” that he can enjoy off duty with his family. 

The 62-year-old, who joined Jefferies in 1990 as a trader and salesman, has sold $65 million of his company stock to buy himself a luxury yacht.

Handler sold 1.5 million shares, or 7% of his holdings, to facilitate the purchase, marking the first time he has sold shares in Jefferies in the 34 years he’s been at the bank, other than for charitable or tax purposes. 

“My sale of shares today was a gift to myself and my family, and I do not intend to sell any further shares,” Handler said in a statement . “I remain extremely bullish on Jefferies.”

Proceeds from Wednesday’s sale are being used to buy a personal boat and pay tax obligations, Jefferies echoed, while adding that following the transaction, Handler will still own about 19.25 million Jefferies shares. 

About 70% of the CEO’s pay has been in the form of company shares, the company added. 

According to the Financial Times , Handler is buying the 164ft yacht from Tilman Fertitta—the hospitality billionaire, owner of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, and a longtime Jefferies client.

It’s not the first time the duo have done business together: The two men have raised four special purpose acquisition companies together under the name Landcadia Holdings.

Fertitta has even described Handler as one of his closest friends and has credited the banker with building a “ juggernaut ” that can go toe-to-toe with more established rivals.

Fortune has contacted Jefferies for comment.

You’re in charge of your work-life balance

Handler recently encouraged his 48,000-strong Instagram following to “ take responsibility ” for their life choices, including creating boundaries with work to avoid burnout.  

“There are always times when sacrifices must be made and sometimes there are periods of intensity when you have absolutely no choice, but surprise, surprise, the world will keep turning if you inject the right amount of personal balance,” he wrote.

“Work hard, and when your work is done, leave the office and go exercise, see your family and friends, explore a new city, or just rest,” Handler similarly advised Wall Street’s interns last year. “The ‘first in’ and the ‘last out’ may not be viewed as the most dedicated, but rather as the one who wastes the most time.”

His view is on work-life balance is a breath of fresh air in the famously dog-eat-dog financial industry.

Wall Street workers would often be on the job for 120 hours a week prior to the pandemic, with research revealing that it was leading to a range of physical and mental health problems in the sector. 

Much has changed since then, thanks to the pandemic-induced shift to working from home: Last year, more than two out of three banks were offering workers either full flexibility or some sort of hybrid work arrangement, according to a survey of more than 300 financial services institutions by Scoop, which helps companies coordinate hybrid teams.

But banking giant bosses have been mustering all their power to return to pre-pandemic ways of working. Both JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs have already ordered workers back to the office five days a week. The latter bank’s CEO, David Solomon , famously called remote working “an aberration that we’re going to correct as quickly as possible.” 

In London’s financial district, not even a global pandemic, lockdowns, and new levels of respect for colleagues’ personal space (remember the elbow bump?) were enough to kill Wolf of Wall Street-era antics. 

Last month, a cryptocurrency company served sushi off the bodies of half-naked models at a private function —and the hedonistic soirée is just the latest example of a series of outdated activities in the City as bosses try to turn back the clock on recent inclusive advances to working culture. 

Work-hard play-hard

Handler may be a fan of ringfencing your time and finding balance, but it doesn’t mean he’s shy when it comes to working hard—he is one of few executives who have truly started from the bottom and worked their way up the ranks.

The New Jersey native joined Jefferies as a trader and salesman in 1990. It took him little over 10 years to scale to the top and by January 2001, Handler was steering Jefferies as its CEO. 

Under his leadership, the company has gone on to become one of America’s most prestigious financial institutions that competes against the likes of Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley .

Compromise has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 8 guests in 4 suites comprising one VIP cabin. The supremely spacious full beam master suite features extensive storage space provided by the dressing room benefits from a his and her bathroom. She is also capable of carrying up to 5 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Range & Performance

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with grp/teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel MTU (16V2000M90) 1,800hp engines, she comfortably cruises at 22 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 25 knots with a range of up to 670 nautical miles from her 18,338 litre fuel tanks at 22 knots. Her water tanks store around 3,028 Litres of fresh water.
