IGY’s North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place: an Iconic Base for Exploring NYC

The iconic North Cove Marina at Brookfield Place rests in the shadow of the One World Trade, just steps from the world-famed 9-11 Memorial in the heart of Manhattan.

Perfectly situated at the entrance to the Hudson River with easy access to an array of restaurants and shops leading to The Oculus, guests are able to explore the myriad sights and sounds of New York City.

North Cove Marina features

When it comes to the facilities and services on offer, North Cove Marina’s General Manager, Mike Revier describes it as: “We are all about location, location, location. It’s that simple. We rely on the amenities and services provided by our partners in Brookfield Place and the surrounding neighbourhood.”

Renovated in 2016, North Cove Marina received top of the line floating docks, upgraded power pedestals providing excellent sources for power and water, and a break wall to protect vessels from harbour waves, a feature not many marinas in New York City offer. With 32 slips, of which 10 are megayacht berths, North Cove Marina welcomes vessels up to a maximum length of 175ft (53m) and can accommodate a draft of 16 ft (5m). 

North Cove also provides vessels services including waste removal, nearby laundry services and onsite provisioning. Like all IGY marinas worldwide, North Cove Marina prides itself on pure professionalism and high levels of privacy and security. Here, you’ll find 24/7 security patrols, CCTV, and, in case of emergency, a rapid response from the famed NYPD and FDNY, giving yacht owners and guests total peace of mind.

What to expect on arrival at North Cove Marina

  Vessels are greeted the IGY way, with dock attendants at full attention ready to guide vessels in slips, catch lines, and assist with connecting to shore power and water. Once settled, the IGY team provides information on the immediate area including availability throughout Brookfield Place and directions to the nearby subway hub - The Oculus. Upon request, the North Cove Marina team can assist with reserving sought after tables at the city’s most happening new restaurants, organising tickets for museums, exhibitions and acclaimed Broadway shows, and guiding you through a host of other not-to-be-missed activities.

In terms of entry to North Cove Marina from international destinations for owners, general advice and contact numbers for local authorities are provided.  Of course globally, IGY offers the services of Fairport Yacht Support  to clients, however, there are not many, if any, yacht agents working out of New York City.  Mike advises: “We encourage yachts to enter the U.S. at a more typical yachting port such as Newport or Ft. Lauderdale prior to their visit to New York City.  Clearing customs requires a taxi ride to Newark Airport.”

Who comes to North Cove?  

The majority of business comes from private yachts ranging between 40ft and 180ft. “Some are used for day entertaining, others are for personal use, and some are chiefly summer Manhattan crash-pads,” adds Mike.

About a third of North Cove’s customers are seasonal commercial vessels from 28ft to 80ft offering various types of tour cruises on New York Harbour, including ticketed statue sails on tall ships, private small boat charter, high speed powerboat tours as well as large yachts to host events.

Kids are also very well catered for, thanks largely to North Cove Sailing School , a club with a fleet of 12 sailboats. They offer a summer sailing camp for kids, family sailing lessons, and other community-oriented events.

Location, location, location  

Following an extensive refurbishment, Brookfield Place is now one of New York City’s most prestigious shopping and dining locations, replete with leading designer boutiques, celebrated restaurants and art exhibits all housed in a vibrant and lively marina plaza environment.

Situated in the Battery Park City neighbourhood, guests will adore the family-friendly atmosphere with convenient access to beautiful parks with waterside recreation just steps away. The World Trade Centre/Ground Zero is right next door while the Financial District, South Street Sea Port, The Battery, Tribeca, and Brooklyn Bridge are all within easy walking distance.

This prime site is also close to all major subways and vehicle routes. Quite simply, there’s no better base from which to explore one of the globe’s most exciting cities while entertaining family and friends from the comfort of your superyacht.

New York highlights  

A short cab ride and you’ll find yourself browsing SoHo’s stylish boutiques and eateries, exploring Fifth Avenue’s iconic department stores or perhaps soaking up the thrumming, round the clock excitement of Times Square.

Further New York landmarks include the legendary Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Centre and Radio City Music Hall… and of course, no visit is complete without a stroll in Central Park or an afternoon in the city’s Upper East Side – the setting for numerous hit movies and TV shows.

With normal life now resuming following the pandemic, visitors can also look forward to a glittering roster of world class events. “It’s been quiet since Covid, but we will host events such as the Americas Cup Grand Prix and then Sail GP, The Clipper Around the World Race, various tall ships and historic vessels,” adds Mike. “We also participate in the many events occurring here on campus with Brookfield Place (bfplny.com).”

New York City cruising and beyond

During your stay at North Cove Marina, you can explore and learn more about the deep nautical history of the NY Harbour, its forts and Ellis island, as well as New York City’s colonial and revolutionary past. 

New York City also has the edge when it comes to city cruising. “There are recreational yacht anchorages in the NY Harbour,” says Mike. “Generally, they are in the vicinity of the Statue of Liberty and offer good holding, good protection (depending on wind direction), and amazing skyline views!”

For avid competition sailors, weekday local club regattas take place around the Statue of Liberty throughout the summer. Boat spotters will marvel at watching opportunities galore; mega yachts, cruise ships, military craft, classic sailing yachts and commercial ships of all sizes use these popular waterways as a matter of course, making these some of the most active channels in the world.

Once you have finished exploring the world’s most visited and loved metropolis by land and sea, there are literally endless possibilities for more adventure in every direction. The Big Apple’s intersection of coastal and river routes means you can head south from NY Harbour down the New Jersey coast, south east out to sea, north on the Hudson River to Canada and the Great Lakes or north east to Long Island Sound, New England, the Hamptons and beyond.

New superyacht marina in Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York

A new marina, which will be able to accommodate superyachts, is under construction in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park in New York. ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina will have more than one hundred berths and will be able to accommodate yachts up to 75 metres.

ONE°15 Brooklyn is the first new marina built in New York Harbor in 20 years. Construction is due to be completed this autumn with a formal opening planned for spring 2016.

The project is a joint venture between majority owner SUTL Group and Edgewater Resources. The SUTL group is behind the ONE°15 Marina brand, which includes the ONE°15 Marina Club Singapore.

“As we looked to expand the brand into international destinations we identified the perfect opportunity in Brooklyn with the vibrant, lush public spaces of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Manhattan skyline backdrop and open water,” said Arthur Tay, chairman of SUTL Group.

“Boaters and water enthusiasts from around the corner and around the world will feel at home at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina.”

It is hoped that the development will make the waterfront more accessible and enhance the local area. A community dock will make up 25 per cent of the square footage of dock space and offer free and affordable community boating opportunities. A sailing and kayak school will be part of the new marina to allow people of all ages, abilities and incomes to enjoy the water.

“In New York City, we are surrounded by water yet there are so few opportunities to interact with the harbour,” said Regina Myer, president of Brooklyn Bridge Park. “This marina with its robust free and low cost programming, makes the waterfront accessible in new ways to even more New Yorkers and puts Brooklyn on the map for the global boating community.”

This marina is one of a number of developments on America’s east coast. A new superyacht marina in Miami is due to open this December and a $12 million superyacht marina is planned for Dania Beach, Florida .

New Superyacht Marina Planned for New York Harbour

Located in the heart of Brooklyn Bridge Park overlooking the spectacular Manhattan skyline, ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina is currently under construction and will be able to accommodate yachts of up to 75 metres.

This is the first marina to be built in New York Harbour in the last 20 years, and with some of the calmest waters in all of the harbour due to advanced technology and design, the marina is be a welcome arrival with seasonal docking facilities of the highest quality.

The project is joint venture between SUTL Group and Edgewater with expertise coming from ONE°15 Marina Club Singapore, a previous project of the SUTLE Group.

Not only with the marina cater for the superyacht community, but it is offering water access to the local Brooklyn community - widely considered as the most important design feature by experts and resident New Yorkers and sailing enthusiasts. The project will additionally lead to the opening a Sail Club and School and a members-only Harbour Club.

Arthur Tay, chairman of SUTL Group revealed the company’s passion for boating and desire to expand their brand and was fulfilled when they “identified the perfect opportunity in Brooklyn with the vibrant, lush public spaces of Brooklyn Bridge Park, Manhattan skyline backdrop and open water”.

Once complete the marina’s community dock will make up nearly 25% of the square footage of dock space at the ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina, offering free and affordable community facilities and world-class facilities in order to allow local sailing groups to thrive. Space for kayaking schools and small boat sailing programs will be aimed at children to get them enthused by the water and to give everyone an opportunity to learn.

“This marina with its robust free and low cost programming [will place Brooklyn] on the map for the global boating community” says Regina Myer, the President of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The marina is set to appeal to boating enthusiasts from near and far whether that’s superyachts and their wealthy owners, or canoeing clubs and their budding members.

In addition, Florida is currently under development with a new superyacht marina in Dania Beach, Miami .

Elegant superyacht draws attention at marina in Brooklyn Bridge Park

Visitors to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade this week are catching an eyeful of the elegant superyacht Vanish, docked at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina in Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Vanish, at 71.5 meters long (roughly 235 feet), dwarfs the other yachts currently in the marina. (The typical boat docked there is in the 30-45-foot range.)

The $90 million motor yacht can accommodate up to 12 guests “in complete luxury,” with a crew of 20, according to SuperYacht Fan . She has a range of more than 5,200 nautical miles, making her capable of traveling long distances without the need for refueling.

Vanish was built by Feadship , a Dutch yacht-building company based in the Netherlands, according to another superyacht website, Superyacht Times.

The Vanish carries an Airbus helicopter, registration N735VT , with “VT” referring to the yacht’s multibillionaire owner, Larry Van Tuyl. Besides the helicopter, Tuyl also owns a Gulfstream jet. The boat, which costs roughly $10 million a year to operate, is not available for charters, according to SuperYacht Fan. 

Van Tuyl, 73, with a reputation as a Republican megadonor , lives in Arizona with his wife Pat. Van Tuyl sold his Van Tuyl Automotive Group to Berkshire Hathaway for roughly $4 billion in 2015. Van Tuyl is now chairman of Berkshire Hathaway Automotive and is still acquiring dealerships , according to Automotive News.

Vanish is not the first spectacular superyacht to dock at ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina. The 240-foot motor vessel Planet Nine , featured in Christopher Nolan’s action film “Tenet,” took up almost the entire rear D dock when it visited the marina. In the film, Planet Nine served as the floating lair of supervillain Andrei Sator (played by Kenneth Branagh). Planet Nine is owned by billionaire financier Nat Rothschild, heir apparent to the title of Baron Rothschild (held by his father).

The marina has also been visited by the fabulous 185-foot Mandango 3 , one of the largest sailing yachts in the world. With a main mast 205 feet high, the crew had to remove the antenna to fit under the Verrazano Bridge — at low tide.

Another visitor was the Statsraad Lehmkuhl, Norway’s 107-year-old three-masted tall ship, called by many “ the most beautiful ship in the world .” The Statsraad Lehmkuhl (named in honor of Norwegian cabinet minister Kristofer Lehmkuhl) is a maritime training vessel fitted out as a state-of-the-art floating environmental research lab.

Another storied vessel to dock at the marina was the iconic Hudson River sloop Clearwater , founded more than 50 years ago by the late folk musician and eco-activist Pete Seeger. The Clearwater swung by last year as part of the marina’s Community Sail Days program. 

The 50-ton French cargo sailboat Grain de Sail — with a load of French wine and chocolate — has also visited the popular marina. Powered by the wind, the transit marked the emergence of a green logistics chain that relies on renewable resources instead of fossil fuels.

Even Little Amal — the famous, 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl — chose ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina to bid goodbye to New York City after her whirlwind 19-day visit across all five boroughs.

The marina is also the permanent home of Rarebit, one of the few remaining original Wheeler Playmates, the iconic wooden pleasure and fishing yachts of a bygone era. Rarebit is a sister boat to one of the most famous fishing boats of all time — Ernest Hemingway’s Pilar. Rarebit was lovingly restored by actor/producer Matthew Rhys (“The Americans,” “Perry Mason”) and is ONE°15 Brooklyn Marina’s official charter boat. (She can be booked by groups of up to six people for two-hour harbor tours.)

Best marinas to dock your boat..

Marine, marina, harbor, yacht club, port — not exactly synonyms, but close. A marina provides safe dockage for vessels of all sizes, often offering supplies, repair, and other facilities to those who rent a slip. A quick (but unreliable) Google search told us that there at about 12,000 marinas in the United States.

Whether that’s true or not, that’s a lot to sift through. But we did it — we found the top 10 superyacht marinas in the U.S.

1. Yacht Haven Grande | Miami, Florida

“Welcome to Miami” is the vibe when you step off the yacht and into Yacht Haven Grande by Island Gardens. This marina is nothing short of flash and accommodates some of the largest superyachts in the world. 

This Miami marina was specifically designed to host mega yachts reaching 500+ feet in length, plus accommodation for smaller tenders. Onsite amenities include a luxury lounge, conference room, mail and package delivery, concierge service, BBQ area for crew, and water taxi to select Miami waterfronts. Yacht Haven Grande is a true marina destination, and one of the finest in the world.

2. Gurney’s Star Island Marina | Montauk, New York

All the way at the End of the World (as Montauk, NY is so often referred to), is Gurney’s Star Island Marina . It’s part of a larger resort and therefore offers plenty of amenities for boat owners who book a slip. Despite a sense of exclusivity, Gurney’s Star Island Marina does not require a membership. 

The marina can accommodate yachts up to 220 feet with a maximum draft of 12 feet. Boat guests have full access to Gurney’s Star Island facilities and amenities, including laundry services, a private beach, a fitness center, heated pools, tennis courts, and waterfront dining options. It’s a welcome land excursion for yacht charters in New England .

3. Bahia Mar Yachting Center | Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Smack dab in the heart of Fort Lauderdale is the Bahia Mar Resort and Yachting Center (also home to the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show ). It’s all about the amenities when you dock at Bahia Mar, which includes access to a swimming pool, fitness center, entertainment concierge, diving and sailing tours, and dining options. Oh, and the beach is right across the street. 

The marina is separated into the South Basin and the North Basin, with the resort, parking, shops, and restaurants conveniently in the middle. Bahia Mar holds 250 slips and can accommodate vessels up to 300 feet in length. Facilities include fueling, free WiFi, cable television, and pump out. Best to book ahead of time — about 90% of the slips are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Stop by Denison’s Fort Lauderdale office to speak with a superyacht specialist.

4. Safe Harbor Charleston City | Charleston, South Carolina

Safe Harbor has locations all over the west and east coasts, but its marina in Charleston , South Carolina is one of the best superyacht marinas in the United States. It’s home to the Mega Dock (dun, dun duunn), which hosts some of the most prestigious yachts in the world.

Charleston is a premier boating destination , and the marina’s state-of-the-art facilities and southern hospitality are a welcome respite after a big day on the water. Yachts that book a slip at Safe Harbor receive complimentary wifi, shore power hookups, freshwater hookups, and cable TV hookups. They also have a full marine service, fuel dock, and waterfront restaurant. While membership is not required to dock at this marina, you can become a member of Safe Harbor to gain access to an entire network of premium locations, amenities, and events.

5. Marina del Rey Marina | Los Angeles, California

Marina del Rey hosts one of the largest marinas in the U.S. It can accommodate vessels up to 150 feet in length and up to 5,000 yachts year-round. Californians do things big — the marina has hotel rooms, restaurants, a Denison office , a movie theater, paddleboard rentals, and a shopping center (among other amenities ). It’s a short drive to/from Santa Monica for the beach or LAX to catch a flight. When you book a slip at Marina del Rey Marina, you’ll get security, fresh water, power, ice delivery, wash and fold delivery, and dockside shuttle service.

6. Farley State Marina | Atlantic City, New Jersey

Dock the yacht and head for the slots. Farley State Marina is part of the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City. This protected marina offers 630 floating slips and dockage for vessels up to 300 feet in length. Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly gifted himself a $300 million megayacht, dubbed “Launchpad,” ahead of his 40th birthday.

The staggering 387-foot-long vessel was seen floating at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., after arriving at its berth earlier this week, The Sun reported Thursday.

The multi-layered luxury ship’s sleek exterior was designed by Espen Øino International and boasts a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure, according to SuperYacht Times.

Reportedly ranking as the 45th largest yacht in the world, the interiors are just as aesthetically pleasing and reportedly executed by Zuretti Interior Design company, a France-based company specializing in unique and custom yacht design.

The breathtakingly beautiful floater stands out with a navy blue theme matching an American flag perched proudly on its wood-paneled stern.

There are several outdoor areas where the social media maven will be able to relax with his family and the indoor levels feature glass paneling allowing for tons of natural light.

There also appears to be a helipad perfect for whenever the Facebook co-founder wants to travel to his vessel by air.

The Feadship-built yacht, built in 2022, can comfortably fit 24 guests aboard, requires a crew of 48, and is said to cost $30 million a year for upkeep and usage, according to Superyachtfan.com .

Boatworld insiders have been buzzing with speculation that Zuckerberg is the owner of the newly minted mega-cruise ever since it made its main voyage from the Netherlands last week.

The tech titan was spotted touring the Russian-commissioned megayacht in early March, though the impressive boat didn’t arrive stateside until this week due to sanctions, according to The Sun.

The website reported that Zuckerberg purchased the pricey yacht – along with its own $30 million partner boat — most likely as an early 40th birthday present to himself.

The boat reportedly traveled to Florida after being granted special permission to be imported just weeks ahead of Zuckerberg’s birthday on May 14.

Zuckerberg’s yacht is just 30 feet shorter than the length of fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos’ 417-foot megayacht Koru, which the Amazon boss snagged for a whopping $500 million.

Zuckerberg’s rep did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.

A Couple Came for the Jazz and Stayed for a Better Apartment

After renting their first New York apartment sight unseen, they decided to take a new place in the South Bronx with eyes wide open.

Altin Sencalar’s timing could hardly have been worse.

“New York is the destination for jazz,” said Mr. Sencalar , a jazz trombonist. So a year and a half ago, he and his wife, Marina Sencalar, signed on — sight unseen — to an apartment in Washington Heights. Mr. Sencalar planned to perform and teach, as he had done in his native Texas.

“The day I moved here was the day I got called to go on tour with Michael Bublé ,” he said. For months the couple’s $2,350 three-bedroom apartment sat mostly unused, an expensive storage unit. Ms. Sencalar remained in Texas with her parents.

Six months later, the gig ended, so the couple finally moved into the apartment in Washington Heights with their two dogs. “The big cash cow was unfortunately gone,” Mr. Sencalar said. “In classic New York fashion, the highs are high and the lows are low.”

Thanks to his jazz friends, however, Mr. Sencalar easily picked up work. “There is a big community here from my grad school, Michigan State, that looks out for one another,” he said.

But the couple, who had met as college students in Texas, were increasingly frustrated with their home. In the kitchen, only one outlet worked. Several evictions were proceeding in the building. They watched a neighbor upstairs get arrested.

“Here is the classic ‘first apartment in New York’ story,” Mr. Sencalar said. “We had a leak every single day from October to May.”

One leak was in the wall between the kitchen and the bathroom. Another came from the toilet upstairs. Mold grew.

“We were coming from Texas with newer apartments and newer everything,” Ms. Sencalar said. “I am used to having maintenance staff on the premises.” They complained to the landlord, but didn’t like the response. “They wanted to paint over the mold. I am a person with some allergies, and you cannot just paint over mold.”

It didn’t help that their neighborhood was congested and rowdy. Music played in the streets into the wee hours. Visiting friends were horrified. “I didn’t want friends coming over,” Mr. Sencalar said. “I was very embarrassed of the place.”

It was also tough to walk their two big dogs, JJ, a Great Dane-Labrador mix, and Navy, a pit bull, on the neighborhood’s crowded sidewalks, and although they were near Highbridge Park, “owners don’t always pick up after their dogs, and don’t walk their dogs with a leash,” Mr. Sencalar said.

That apartment constituted a humble beginning, Mr. Sencalar said. “I never felt at home in my apartment,” he said. “I was like, When am I going to get out of this? I’ve done the barren New York apartment thing. I want to live in a nicer place.”

Occupations: He is a jazz trombonist who teaches, performs and composes. She works in project management and customer support.

On elevator avoidance: The couple chose a low floor. With the dogs, they try to skip the elevator during rush hours. “My dogs want to say hello, and not everyone wants to say hello,” Mr. Sencalar said. And in an emergency, they can easily take the stairs.

On local food options: Their Bronx neighborhood doesn’t have as much variety in food delivery options as their Washington Heights neighborhood did. A food market is scheduled to open in their building’s retail space this month, but in the meantime they walk to the shopping area around a nearby subway station or to Bronx Terminal Market, 10 minutes away.

As the couple’s one-year lease in Washington Heights neared its end, the Sencalars discussed their next step.

“We have moved every year for the last eight years, so I had moving down to a science, but that does not mean I want to move anymore,” Ms. Sencalar said. “I told my husband, wherever we land, we land for a good minute.”

Searching online, she found Mott Haven in the South Bronx, where multiple large residential buildings have recently been built or are under construction near the rezoned Harlem River waterfront, a former industrial wasteland. And it had quick subway access to Manhattan.

Ms. Sencalar compared the rents in the new buildings with those in more established neighborhoods. “I noticed the rent was cheaper for better-quality buildings,” she said.

The couple especially liked the vibe at Estela , a two-building complex with 544 apartments. Last spring, they chose a two-year lease on a large one-bedroom — around 900 square feet — for $3,733, with an incentive of two and a half months free. There’s room for a music nook, a computer setup, a daybed for guests, two couches, a kitchen island and a king-size bed — and for playing with the dogs. (The pet fee is $25 a month for each pet.)

The convenience of a washer-dryer and a dishwasher, along with use of a gym in the building, made the higher rent worth it.

Qualifying for the rent was another matter. “We don’t have stable incomes in their eyes,” Ms. Sencalar said. “Most of our money was made by Altin, and as a musician, he has 1099 jobs,” referring to income tax forms for independent contractors. She does, too, working in project management and customer support. So the Sencalars used a company called TheGuarantors that guarantees leases for people who don’t meet a building’s strict financial requirements. They paid the company a one-time fee of $2,100, which included a security deposit.

Now, the Sencalars are happy to be home. Everything works. If something breaks, a handyman arrives promptly. They have four double electrical outlets in the kitchen.

The building is filled with amenities. Ms. Sencalar often works from the lounge, with its view of the Major Deegan Expressway snaking along the Harlem River with Yankee Stadium in the distance. She and her husband both enjoy the gym.

Once a week, the dogs get a bath and a blow-dry in the building’s dog spa. “Do you know how great it is for our dogs not to be wet on our couch?” Mr. Sencalar said.

There are far fewer pedestrians in their Mott Haven neighborhood. The Sencalars avoid walking the dogs in the more congested areas, and no longer have to fight their way through crowds.

The building is home to several dogs even bigger than theirs. “All the owners here that have big dogs understand we are trying to stay out of each other’s way,” Mr. Sencalar said. “Like, we will wait for one to approach another. It’s a respect thing.”

The Sencalars plan to stay put until they can buy a house.

“I’m a musician as well as a huge dog dad, so I have maybe two strikes against me, and for me to be this comfortable speaks volumes about my lifestyle in Estela,” Mr. Sencalar said. “Any time any of my friends come over, it’s like, ‘Hey, man, can I stay?’”

They can. “We love hosting people,” he said. “That was a big thing back in Texas for us. Now we are back to having people over. We have the space to hang and it’s cool.”
