A Closer Look at J.K. Rowling's Yacht Vajoliroja

We’ve all seen J.K. Rowling’s rise to fame ever since the first Harry Potter book was published. The success of her career was a true rags-to-riches story, and J.K. Rowling deserves all the fringes of life for giving us one of the best literary series of all time. Now that she’s no longer a starving artist, J.K. Rowling makes sure she lives an excellent life; and one way she’s doing just that is by enjoying her yacht, the Vajoliroja. J.K. Rowling has enough money to buy whatever yacht she wants , and we’re going to take a look at why she picked this particular one to call her own.

Vajoliroja had another big time celebrity owner before it belonged to J.K. Rowling . The author bought the yacht from actor Johnny Depp. The yacht was a gift from Depp to his former partner Vanessa Paradis. Depp and his family, including his two children with Paradis—Lily-Rose and Jack—spent a great deal of time on the Vajoliroja. The couple named the yacht Vajoliroja as a play on the Jolly Roger pirate flag. It also combines the names of their family: “Va” for Vanessa, “Jo” for Johnny, “Li” for Lily-Rose, and “Ja” for Jack. It was a charming sentiment until Depp and Paradis went their separate ways. When Depp married Amber Heard in 2015, Vajoliroja’s name was changed to Amphitrite, Poseidon’s sea goddess wife in Greek mythology. Depp gave Amphitrite to his then new wife as a wedding present.

Vajoliroja’s price tag was £22 million, which is a small dent on J.K. Rowling’s billion-dollar net worth. For the novelist, it wasn’t about having the most lavish yacht at the marina. In fact, Rowling and her family spent one holiday on Depp’s boat and immediately fell in love with it. Rowling bought the yacht in 2016.

When Depp had Vajoliroja renovated in 2008, he didn’t hold back at all. The 156-foot superyacht featured 10 cabins. The crew took up five of those cabins, and the rest were left for the guests to enjoy. The yacht had three decks that scream bohemian, which is more of Depp’s style. There’s a subtle pirate theme that’s probably a nod to one of Depp’s most iconic movie roles—Captain Jack Sparrow. The yacht is filled with luscious fabrics and plush décor. There’s wood everywhere, which adds to the overall charm of the yacht. The seating areas are covered in attractive red velvet as well as plenty of the seating in the outdoor areas. There’s a covered dining area on one of the decks, which offers a stunning view of the waters when the yacht is at sea.

The yacht carries plenty of water activities to keep anyone entertained. There’s space available for waterskis, wakeboards, kayaks, snorkeling gear, and so much more. For those who prefer a different cup of tea, Vajoliroja is also outfitted with plenty of other entertainment opportunities. There’s a home cinema, satellite television, high speed Internet, video games, and so much more. There are also plenty of spaces for those who prefer to just lounge around, read all day, or even get some sun.

The yacht was originally built in Turkey by Turquoise, a luxury ship building yard. It’s made out of steel and aluminum and was designed with a 1930s theme. While the yacht is totally modern as it was built in 2001, it doesn’t feature all the sleek lines of contemporary ships. The mahogany wall panels prove just that, and the whole interior of the yacht projects a beautiful old-world feel. Where there’s no wall paneling, the walls are covered in intricate and rich-colored wallpaper. The heavy drapes are even tasseled, and the whole ship is dimly lit. Some call it romantic. Others call it historic. Still there are those that might feel magical in the yacht.

Vajoliroja may have vintage décor, but it doesn’t feel vintage when it comes to comfort. The master cabin is something worth experiencing. It features a large marble-accented bath that’s only second best when put next to the 180 degree ocean view. While the other guest cabins aren’t as fancy, they are still opulently decorated and extremely comfortable. The galley is well stocked and is the perfect place to make gourmet meals. The yacht can accommodate up to five cabin crewmembers at any given time. It has a cruising speed of 12 knots and has the capability of up to 2,500 nautical miles with its 28,000-liter fuel tank.

Final Thoughts

It’s the perfect yacht to take on vacation, and Rowling spent some good time on it with her family. Vajoliroja or Amphitrite, however, is no longer Rowling’s yacht. The novelist put the yacht up for charter and for sale back in 2017. At the time, it was available to charter for $130,000 a week. It was also for sale with a pricetag of $19.2 million USD. It’s definitely the type of yacht that only the wealthy could afford. Rowling enjoyed the yacht for about 8 months before she put it up on the market. Of course, it could’ve been just the busy lifestyle that kept her away from the seas too much. Rowling is reported to still own the yacht to this day, but Vajoliroja is still available for charter. You’ll be able to stay out at sea for a good amount of time with this yacht. It’s truly the perfect getaway that’s charming and truly out of this world. Being on the yacht is an experience unto itself—one that can be quite unforgettable.

J.K. Rowling and Johnny Depp Owned the Same Yacht—Who Has It Now?

J.K. Rowling dished out around $27 million in 2015 for the yacht Johnny Depp had sold just a few months prior. Who owns the yacht now?

Jennifer Farrington - Author

Apr. 28 2022, Published 4:40 a.m. ET

Hollywood actor Johnny Depp used to have a yacht transport him and his guests back and forth between the Bahamas and his private island , Little Hall’s Pond Cay. The Vajoliroja , which was purchased by Depp for $8 million and allegedly renamed Amphitrite , later sold in 2015 to an American businessman. It was then acquired by the Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling .

Here’s how much Rowling paid for the yacht previously owned by Depp and some of the features it had while in her possession.

Rowling paid about $27 million for the yacht once owned by Depp

When it comes to money, Rowling clearly has plenty to spend. The billionaire author reportedly dished out around $27 million in 2015 for the yacht Depp had sold just a few months prior. About two years after purchasing the 156-foot-long watercraft, Rowling put it on the market for $19.2 million and allowed it to be chartered for about $130,000 per week, not including additional expenses, reports Variety .

Although the whereabouts of the yacht previously owned by Depp and Rowling is unknown, there is some speculation that it was listed for sale and purchased with the help of Curtis Stokes at Curtis Stokes & Associates. Simply put, Rowling no longer owns the luxury yacht.

A look inside the million-dollar yacht once owned by Depp and Rowling

While we can’t say for sure what the multimillion dollar yacht looks like today, we do know some of the features it had while in Rowling’s possession. The boat, which sits three decks high and accommodates 10 guests, featured the following, according to Variety :

  • “A bohemian-luxe main deck salon with rich wood paneling.”
  • Windows decorated with “swagged and tasseled drapery.”
  • “A state-of-the-art entertainment system.”
  • Four guest staterooms.
  • On-board Wi-Fi.
  • Recreational equipment, including “kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing and wakeboards, and two tenders for water skiing and jaunts ashore.”
  • “Teak-trimmed glass doors.”

Joanne Rowling

British author and philanthopist

Net worth: $1 billion

J.K. Rowling rose from being a single mother living on welfare to a billionaire thanks to her fantasy series, Harry Potter. In 2020, Forbes named Rowling the second highest-paid author in the world. She now supports a large number of philanthropic causes.

Birthdate: July 31, 1965

Birthplace: Yate, Gloucestershire, England

Education: Graduated from the University of Exeter in 1987

Spouses: Jorge Arantes (1992–1993), David Murray (2001-present)

Kids: 3 (1 child with Arantes and 2 with Murray)

Residence: London, England, and Edinburgh and Aberfeldy, Scotland

What is J.K. Rowling’s net worth?

Although spending $19 million on a yacht sounds frivolous, it didn’t lighten Rowling’s wallet much. After watching her sales from the Harry Potter series grow, Rowling reportedly began earning about $50 million to $100 million a year, according to Celebrity Net Worth . Today, her net worth is estimated to be $1 billion, though the media outlet says the author denies being a billionaire.

Not only has the Harry Potter series generated significant sales (and profit for Rowling), but it gave rise to other money-making opportunities, including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, merchandise, and major motion pictures.

While a great deal of Rowling’s net worth can be attributed to the money she makes off of book royalties , she also made money from “movie advances, movie rights, merchandise, and more,” allowing her to spend freely on yachts and make large charitable donations.

J.K. Rowling Is Selling Her $20 Million Yacht (With Interiors By...Johnny Depp)

By Lilit Marcus

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Boat and Yacht

The mega best-selling Harry Potter series didn't just make J.K. Rowling famous—it made her rich enough to afford her very own luxury yacht. Although Rowling's yacht doesn't really resemble the giant pirate ship that brought the Durmstrang students to Hogwarts ahead of the Tri-Wizard Cup, it was previously owned by Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp , which is...close enough. Rowling bought the vessel , which Depp had named Amphitrite as an homage to then-wife Amber Heard, about a year ago for £22 million ($29 million) but is reportedly selling it at a loss with an asking price of €17.8 million ($20 million).

The yacht, which can accommodate up to ten people, has some pretty eye-dropping features, including a plush master bedroom suite with a king size bed, a formal dining room on the deck, and a cozy salon with ten large windows perfect for watching the sun set over the ocean . There's also top-of-the-line tech equipment and audio-visual equipment in case you feel like having a daylong Potter movie marathon. The bottom line: This boat is way nicer than the ones that Hogwarts first-years take to get across the lake. And how was there not a character named Amphitrite in Hufflepuff House?

This isn't the first time that Rowling has parted with some of her assets. In 2012, she sold the eight-bedroom Victorian mansion in Edinburgh where she had written the last four Potter books, for $3.6 million. Although Rowling's net worth was once estimated to be worth $1 billion, she has given away so much of her money to charity that she dropped off of the Forbes "world billionaires" list the same year that she sold her home. Her favorite causes are kid-related, most notably her own organization, Lumos (named for the Potterverse "let there be light" spell ), whose goal is to take poor and disabled children out of institutions and reunite or place them with families.

So far, no bidders have stepped forward to buy the yacht. But think about it—wouldn't a yacht be such a great place for a Quidditch match? Or a Yule Ball? Sadly, the decor was designed by Depp, and Rowling didn't change it, so there aren't any talking paintings, nearly-headless ghosts, or Rooms of Requirement on board. You can probably bring your own butterbeer, though...

Vajoliroja is the stylish 156-ft. yacht which Johnny Depp bought in 2007 for undisclosed amount. Vajoliroja is a coined term after Va for Vanessa, Jo for Johnny, Li Ro for Depp’s daughter Lily Rose and Ja for Depp’s son Jack. However when Depp broke up with Vanessa Paradis and married Amber Heard, he eventually changed the name to Amphitrite, after the Greek sea goddess, which served as a wedding gift to Heard. Depp is known to be an avid fan of yacht in his private life and he has always been fond of life on water which he was finally to experience when he bought the yacht. He used the said yacht to cruise towards his private island located in the Bahamas named Little Hall’s Pond Cay.

It was reported that the author of series of seven fantasy novels Harry Potter, British author J.K. Rowling bought Depp’s Vajoliroja for $27 million in 2016. The author reportedly fell in love with the yacht after she took the vessel out on some family charter trip with her immediate family. Depp had the yacht completely refitted in 2008 to boast some attractive vintage lines for some 1930s tycoon vibe which was constructed by Turkey’s Turquoise Yachts in 2001. This was done to suit Depp’s requirement for the design that resembles some classic gentleman’s yacht.

The yacht was built by the Proteksan Turquoise in 2001 and since Depp had the yacht refitted in 2008, it has never been refitted again. Two prominent Turkish shipyards has joined forces in 1997 to eventually form the Proteksan Turquoise Yachts Inc. With their combined skill set and experiences, they were able to make some winning collaboration which produces some high quality vessels. Their shipyard facility is located in Istanbul, Turkey where the world class yachts are made. The luxury vessel which is now owned by J.K. Rowling had some sophisticated exterior design and engineering which was done by the Taka Yachts and the ones who designed the interiors is the LM Pagano Design. The classic style of the yacht gives off some vibe of some updated and state of the art type of technology which includes Zero Speed stabilizers, some entertainment system and some top of the line communication systems onboard.

The yacht also comes with some kayaks, board for windsurfing and dinghy which can be used by the guest of Amphitrite to enjoy some quality time while in the water. The yacht can accommodate guests up to 10 people n the five staterooms of the yacht which has room for crews that can fit up to nine people. The yacht can cruise comfortably at12 knots and can reach the maximum speed of 14 knots. The British author is reportedly using the yacht for holidays to some destinations with her family however the superyacht can be chartered for $90,000 per week which used to be $130,000 when Johnny Depp still owned the yacht.

The Amphitrite offers the guests some stylish accommodation with one master bedroom, two rooms with double beds and two rooms with twin beds. The yacht which was refitted to resemble some vintage bordello has a velvet finish overall and the color palette of the boat had some reds and golds. The Iconic Designer of exterior Tanju Kalaycioglu intended the yacht to be a creation of modern design with some look of the vintage steam yacht. This was done using some non functional masts which was designed with some overhanging fantail stern, a smokestack and square wooden cabin top deck.

The superyacht features some typical contemporary luxury yacht which can serve as a helicopter pad which also has swimming pool and Jacuzzi on board. There are also some waterskis, and snorkel gears on board that will surely provide enough entertainment for the water lovers. There is also some entertainment inside the yacht including a satellite TV, some iPod docking stations and game consoles which can be played such as Playstation 3, and Wii.

Johnny Depp bought a yacht in 2007 that has a pirate-ship theme and can fit 10 guests — take a look

  • Johnny Depp bought a yacht for an undisclosed price in 2007.
  • The yacht is known for its art deco-style interior and "pirate-ship" design.
  • Depp sold the yacht to J.K. Rowling in 2015 for $27 million.

Johnny Depp bought a yacht from Turkish shipyard Proteksan Turquoise yacht in 2007. The yacht is known for its art deco-style interior and "pirate-ship" design.

Depp purchased the Turkish-made yacht for an undisclosed amount and named it "Vajoliroja." At the time, he was dating Vanessa Paradis. The yacht name is a combination of their names, along with their children's, Lily-Rose and Jack.

Depp and Paradis were seen enjoying the yacht on several occasions with their daughter Lily-Rose in 2011. The couple split up in 2012.

When Depp married  Amber Heard in 2015, he renamed the yacht "Amphitrite." Fifteen months after the wedding, Heard filed for divorce.  The pair is now embroiled in a bitter trial that began in April.

The yacht has played a role in Heard's testimony against Depp. Heard claimed Depp slammed her against the wall in one of the yacht's cabins. Heard said Depp was drunk and upset that he had to sell the boat. Depp has denied that he ever abused or assaulted Heard.

Depp sold the yacht to J.K. Rowling in 2015 for $27 million . The yacht has since been sold to a US businessman and is now named "Arriva."

Depp hired California-based interior designer LM Pagano to renovate the yacht in 2008.

A post shared by LM Pagano Design (@lmpaganodesign)

Pagano, who designed the yacht, said she wanted the 47.6-meter (156-foot) yacht to feel like "the Orient Express on the ocean."

"There's so much going on in there, but it all works. I had some of those velvet patterns rewoven for me on original art deco looms!" she told Steinway in an undated interview.

Pagano did not respond to Insider's requests for comment.

The yacht, which can accommodate 10 guests and nine crew members, has a home cinema and salon.

The yacht has four decks, according to Yacht Harbour. Its seven-meter beams give it the silhouette of a pirate ship. It's equipped with a Kaleidescape entertainment system.

A video tour of the yacht shows velvet decor and an antique-style wooden interior. The yacht's interior is made of vintage textiles and silk, according to a 2021 Facebook post by Pagano.

"I was graced to be working with Johnny, who has extraordinary knowledge and serious appreciation of historic decorative arts," she wrote in the post. The boat also has a 1930s-inspired dining hall.

The yacht has five large staterooms.

Three of the cabins have double beds, while two have twin beds. All of the bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, according to Charter Index. In a 2019 Facebook post, Pagano wrote  that the bedroom's decor featured items procured from around the world.

The yacht also has a helicopter pad, swimming pool, and Jacuzzi.

Depp chartered the yacht when he wasn't using it in 2013.

Depp reportedly charged charterers $130,000 a week during peak seasons and $110,000 during low seasons.

When it comes to celebrity-owned assets, the golden rule seems to be “the bigger the better.” The fancier the superyacht, the more important the celebrity; the more custom the private jet, the bigger the car collection, the more expensive the mansion – they all add weight to a celebrity’s image and public appeal.

jk rowling yacht

That may hold true for most public figures, but Johnny Depp was never your run-of-the-mill celebrity. As Hollywood’s highest paid star, at his career peak, he was worth well over $900 million, but that amount has since dwindled down to $100 million – $150 million tops. His financial turmoil is attributable to a series of factors, of which standouts are his failed marriage to Amber Heard and her domestic abuse accusations against him, and his unchecked lifestyle, which included expenses like $500,000 a month on wine alone.

jk rowling yacht

Back when he was still Disney’s favorite pirate and the ultimate heartthrob, Johnny Depp was also the owner of one of the most famous celebrity-owned boats. Vajoliroja, often described as a combination between gypsy caravan, Art Deco luxury hotel, and the fanciest private railway car, the motoryacht wasn’t famous because it was big, or packed with outrageous amenities, or for that matter, eye-watering expensive. It was famous because it was his, and because it was everything you’d image a Johnny Depp boat would be.

jk rowling yacht

Vajoliroja is no longer in Depp’s portfolio of assets, because the actor was forced to sell it in 2016, after several meetings with his advisors and the conclusion that he needed to liquidate to avoid bankruptcy. The decision was very taxing on the actor, it has emerged in the ongoing Depp vs. Heart defamation lawsuit. Knowing some context about the motoryacht makes his sadness at having to part with it more understandable.

jk rowling yacht

Vajoliroja is an older motoryacht, delivered by Proteksan Turquoise Yachts on commission in 2001. It has a steel hull, and aluminum, GRP and teak superstructure, and clear 1920 steampunk vibes. Until Depp bought it, it sailed under the Anatolia name, and it had already been on the market for a while when the actor decided he wanted to invest in a yacht. Whereas most celebrities will want something new, Depp looked on the used market, because he wanted something with personality.

jk rowling yacht

Anatolia caught his sight but was initially deemed too small. At 156 feet (47.5 meters), three decks and accommodation for 10 guests and nine crew, it was that, because he compared it to the long-range explorers he’d been looking at. An explorer, though, has everything but personality, so Depp ended buying Anatolia sight-unseen, for an undisclosed amount.

jk rowling yacht

Upon purchase, Anatolia came with naval architecture by Tanju Kalaycioglu and interior styling by Redman Whiteley. The latter was ripped out in a first 2007 refit, and replaced by a design by LM Pagano, working in close collaboration with Depp himself. The boat was technically Depp’s in late 2006, but it was ready for sailing in the summer of 2007, now with a lavish, pirate-themed interior and a new name: Vajoliroja, which stands for the first letters in the names of the family members, VAnessa, JOhnny, LIly-ROse, and JAck. The refit supposedly cost over $7 million, with a reported total cost for the boat at some $30 million.

jk rowling yacht

After Depp’s wedding to Amber Heard, it was renamed Amphitrite, goddess of the sea and Poseidon’s wife in Greek mythology. In early 2016, after vacationing on it and falling in love with the interior,  Harry Potter  author J.K. Rowling bought it for a reported $24 million or $28.9 million. Less than a year later, she listed it for a little over $19 million, so whatever infatuation she must’ve felt with it dissipated fast – and at a cost. The current owner is unknown, but he is believed to be a businessman. The boat now sails under the name Arriva, exclusively with the owner.

jk rowling yacht

As far as we know, the Pagano interior, which gives this boat its unique personality, is still in place. Highlights include luxurious materials like crushed Italian velvet, silk and jacquard, custom oxidized patterned leather, antiques brought in from all corners of the globe, plush chenille on the walls, feathered hand-painted trims, and 24-K golden fixtures as furniture accents. At first sight, the styling is too much: not just overwhelming, but downright suffocating. In her only interview with Boat International years ago for the print edition, Pagano said that Depp himself was directly involved in the design and that the result worked surprisingly well. Even more, the boat was a cool and comfy “hang.”

jk rowling yacht

Each cabin has an ensuite bathroom, and ostentatiously makes up for the lack of extra space with plush décor and custom touches. For instance, each cabin has its own custom stationery with an old pirate font, commissioned for Depp. There is no helipad, pool or jacuzzi onboard the former Vajoliroja, regardless of what you might read online, but you do get a large, sheltered dining area aft and a cozy sun deck. Amenities also include an indoor dining hall, a private cinema, and a range of water toys, including a Riva-style custom tender sitting at the bow.

Powered by two upgraded Caterpillar diesel engines, the ex-Vajoliroja can hit top speeds of 13.5 knots (15.5 mph / 25 kph) and has a range of 2,300 nautical miles (2,647 miles / 4,269 km) at cruising speed. During the Depp ownership, it would often be offered for charter, at an average price of $130,000 a week, plus expenses. In fact, that’s how Rowling got to sail on it, and fall in love with it badly enough to buy it.

As Depp once said,  “Money doesn’t buy you happiness, but it buys you a big enough yacht to sail right up to it.”  Today, ex Vajoliroja, Arriva is someone else’s vehicle towards that happy place.

It seems everything author J.K. Rowling touches turns to gold. First, the chair she sat on while writing the first two Harry Potter books was auctioned off for charity, and now the famous creator of the wizarding world is selling her luxury yacht for $19.2 million. After purchasing it in either late 2015 or early 2017, Rowling is offering the chance to rent the 56-foot-long boat for $130,000 a week or even buy it outright, reports __ Variety . The vessel is special for another reason: It was once owned by Johnny Depp. The luxury yacht has three decks and fits ten people in four bedrooms and a master suite. (There are also five crew cabins.) Amenities onboard include kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing equipment, wake boards, and two tenders. And if the weather isn't cooperating, wifi and video games are also available.

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was so enthralled with Johnny Depp’s luxury yacht after vacationing on it that she bought it. Depp sold her the 157-foot boat, christened the Amphitrite, for $28.9 million back in January,  according to the  Daily Mail . Which makes us wonder what the hell happened so quickly to make her want to offload the yacht for a $9.2 million loss? Did Rowling find  a chunk of Depp’s finger  somewhere in one of the cabins? Or did she simply tire of the emo pirate-chic aesthetic in which Depp heavily blanketed the interior?

Burgess , a charter service that oversees the renting out of such luxury yachts, describes the Amphitrite as “a yacht like no other. Behind her elegant 1930s gentleman's yacht exterior lies an utterly modern charter yacht with state-of-the-art technology and limitless luxury. Feel the romance of a bygone era in her lavish, bohemian interior, pieced together with vintage velvet, Art Deco furniture and objets d'art.” Uh, sure. The exterior is indeed grand and stately, evoking an air of yesteryear, but once you get inside, your eyes will bleed from Depp’s "lavish" decor.

bed_inside_yachtlifeit.jpg

Depp spent about $7 million renovating the inside of the ship back in 2008. All five guest cabins were drenched in patterned velvet, an abundance of teak and mahogany and enough blinding, gilded trimmings to make a Rothschild fumble a monocle. Depp originally named it Vajoliroja, a pun on the Jolly Roger (when spoken), when giving it to ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, but renamed it Amphitrite when giving it to soon-to-be-ex-wife Amber Heard. (We’re hazy on proper yacht gifting etiquette, but it would seem re-issuing a vessel to your new partner wouldn’t be quite kosher.)

While the boat’s “subtle pirate theme” is a massive understatement, the interior is also eerily reminiscent of rooms at Hogwarts, so perhaps that’s what drew JK Rowling to the ship in the first place? Maybe there was a sorting hat for when guests embarked which directed them to their appointed state rooms?

inside_boat.jpg

The twin CAT-diesel powered boat will steam along at a maximum of 13.5 knots, thanks to the 960-horsepower, and has a range of 2,240 nautical miles. It’ll sleep ten guests and nine crew, and features a salon, and plenty of entertaining spaces, with three different decks. It also has water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkelling “capabilities,” and a suite of top-notch electronics. All of which are undercut by that damned interior. For the price, think this is worth it?

You'll Never Guess the Major Celebrity Who Named J.K. Rowling's $19.2M Yacht

jk rowling yacht

It's nice to drift off to sleep while reading J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, but it's even nicer to get lulled to sleep by waves aboard J.K. Rowling's yacht. Only a year after purchasing it, the bestselling author listed her spectacular 156-foot modern motoryacht for $19.2 million . If the price of ownership is too steep, you can rent the boat to the tune of $130,000 per week before expenses. With five staterooms, outdoor dining, and plenty of relaxation and recreation space, the yacht can accommodate up to 10 guests. While it was only built in 2001, the boat's ornate interiors — dark woods, heavy velvets, and fancy moldings — reference an earlier time, one where Dumbledore himself would feel at home.

JK Rowling is Selling Her Classic Yacht

jk rowling yacht

Famous writer JK Rowling is selling her classic yacht named Amphitrite.

jk rowling yacht

The classic 47.6-meter Amphitrite owned by JK Rowling, the famous author of the Harry Potter series has been put for sale. The asking price is 17,800,000 euro.

The classic boat with impressive looks was built originally in Turkey by Proteksan Turquoise. She was named Anatolia and splashed away in 2001. The superyacht was built in Edwardian style, with exterior design by Taka Yachts.

The boat can accommodate ten guests in five cabins and need a crew of nine to operate.

Power is supplied by a pair of CAT diesel engines, each delivering 480 hp. She can cruise at a speed of 12 knots.

Anatolia was acquired in 2006 by actor Johnny Depp and in 2008 she was completely refitted. The refit included plush velvets and dim lighting. The name was changed to Vajoliroja and the yacht was available to charter. Johnny Depp allegedly spent $7 million for the refit.

After the ship changed owners a few more times and another name change, it was bought by writer JK Rowling in January 2016. Now the classic Amphitrite yacht is for sale.

What Yacht does J.K. Rowling Own?

J.K. Rowling is one of the wealthiest authors in the world, and it’s no surprise that she owns a luxury yacht. But what yacht does she own?

J.K. Rowling, the author behind the wizarding world of Harry Potter, is no stranger to luxury. While her mainstay remains storytelling, her net worth has afforded her the opportunity to own one of the maritime pinnacles of luxury: a yacht. Rowling’s yacht was called the Amphitrite, a 56-meter motor vessel equipped with a multitude of high-end amenities. Even though Rowling sold the yacht in 2016, the Amphitrite continues to bear her signature.

Also did J.K. Rowling buy Johnny Depp’s yacht? Get all the details!

History of the Amphitrite

The Amphitrite has a storied provenance before its Rowling-era fame. Crafted by Turquoise Yachts in Turkey, this 56-meter masterpiece was launched in 2009. The yacht was originally owned by actor Johnny Depp and bore the name Vajoliroja—a portmanteau of the names of his then-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis and their two children, Lily-Rose and Jack.

Depp owned the yacht until 2015, when Rowling took ownership for a reported sum of $27 million. She renamed the vessel Amphitrite. Interestingly, Rowling parted ways with the Amphitrite in 2016, selling it for $19.2 million. Today, it sails under the flag of a U.S. businessman and goes by the name Arriva.

Inside the Amphitrite

The Amphitrite could house up to 10 guests across its four guest cabins and a master suite. The vessel also offered a full staff complement, employing a crew of five to ensure the ultimate level of comfort and service. As for amenities, it boasted a gym, Jacuzzi, sauna, and a selection of watersports equipment, making it the epitome of maritime indulgence.

Rowling’s Affair with the Amphitrite

During her tenure as the Amphitrite’s owner, Rowling did more than just vacation on it. The yacht served as a serene haven for her, friends, and family. In a 2015 interview, Rowling shared that she cherished the yacht as a “great place to relax and escape from the world.” The space, the amenities, and the opportunity for solitude contributed to her affinity for the yacht.

While it wasn’t used for any book launches or Harry Potter sequels, the Amphitrite was a sanctuary where Rowling could recharge her creative batteries. The yacht also played host to charity events, reflecting Rowling’s philanthropic inclinations.

Post-Sale and Chartering Ventures

Approximately two years after becoming the owner of the Amphitrite, J.K. Rowling chose to list the yacht for sale. The asking price was a cool $19.2 million. Beyond simply selling the yacht, Rowling took a unique approach by also making it available for charter. For those looking to taste the same level of luxury once enjoyed by the author, the yacht could be chartered for about $130,000 per week, not factoring in additional expenses such as fuel, food, and crew gratuities.

The Brokerage Mystery

While the yacht’s current whereabouts remain somewhat of a maritime enigma, there is some speculation worth noting. Industry murmurs suggest that the yacht was listed and eventually sold through Curtis Stokes at Curtis Stokes & Associates, a brokerage firm known for handling high-value yachts. While unconfirmed, if true, this would signify that the vessel had changed hands through a broker of noteworthy reputation.

Ownership Status

In clear terms, Rowling no longer owns the Amphitrite. Whether you refer to it by its original name, Vajoliroja, or its current moniker, Arriva, this floating indulgence is no longer part of Rowling’s portfolio. Though she had it for a brief period, during that time, the yacht served multiple purposes: a sanctuary for relaxation, a hub for social gatherings, and even a space for philanthropic activities. Even after its sale, the Amphitrite remains an intriguing footnote in Rowling’s expansive history of luxurious ownerships.

This added dimension to the Amphitrite’s journey post-Rowling adds another layer of complexity to the yacht’s already fascinating story. It’s a tangible example of how, even after the sale, luxury items like this continue to navigate through networks of affluence and opulence, always ready for the next chapter.

Environmental Considerations

While owning a yacht exudes a level of success and opulence, it’s worth acknowledging the environmental implications that come with such luxury. Yachts are known for their high fuel consumption and resultant greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, they can disturb marine ecosystems.

However, a conscious yacht owner can mitigate some of these impacts by utilizing cleaner fuels and adopting energy-efficient technologies. The larger point here is that yacht ownership comes with a certain level of responsibility to the planet.

Pursuitist Final Take

The Amphitrite—once the floating palace of J.K. Rowling—illustrates that when it comes to maritime luxury, few stones are left unturned. While Rowling only owned the luxury yacht for a year, she utilized it as a private retreat and a venue for philanthropic efforts. Though she has since parted ways with this sea-faring spectacle, the Amphitrite remains tethered to her name, encapsulating a brief but memorable chapter in her life of affluence. And while the allure of yachting is undeniable, it offers a moment to reflect on the environmental responsibilities that come with extreme luxury.

The Amphitrite, the charming yacht of J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter

jk rowling yacht

JK Rolling bought Johnny Deep and Vanessa Paradis' beautiful yacht in January 2016, named "Vajoliroja'' for Vanessa, Johnny, Lily-Rose and Jack (their two children.) The novelist reportedly paid $30 million to afford the yacht, which can now be chartered for a Caribbean cruise.

Chloé Torterat

The ex-Vajoliroja renamed Amphitrite by Johnny Deep after his marriage to Amber Heard (who couldn't stand the yacht since it reminded her of her husband's former life with Vanessa Paradis) was sold in 2016 to JK Rowling, the famous author of the Harry Potter saga. Amphititrite refers to the name of the wife of Poseidon, the God of the Sea in Greek mythology.

This 47.6 m (156.2 ft) motor yacht was built in 2001 by Proteksan Turquoise Yachts and refitted in 2008. Her lines were inspired by the classic gentleman's yachts of the 1930s. But behind her classic lines lies the latest technology for cruising in the utmost modern comfort. Johnny Depp and J.K. Rowling Owned the Same $20 Million Yacht

Yachts come to mind when thinking of the lavish lifestyles of the rich and famous. Celebrities and other wealthy individuals have bought and enjoyed yachts for years, and that trend continues. One celebrity yacht, the Amphitrite, was owned by two different celebrities before being sold again in 2017.

Learn more about the previous owners of this superyacht, its features, and similar boats owned by other famous people.

J.K. Rowling bought a yacht once owned by Johnny Depp in 2016

A smaller white and grey yacht parked in a marina with numerous yachts and a bridge in the background

What was once called the Vajoliroja , named by the owner Johnny Depp by blending his two children and his ex-wife’s names, became the Amphitrite before it was sold to a new owner in January 2016. According to The Drive, that new owner turned out to be the famed Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, who purchased the luxury ship from a businessman who then sold it to her for $28.9 million.

The Drive also reports that Depp had spent around $7 million renovating his ship in 2008. According to PopSugar , Rowling took the boat for a family vacation and fell in love with it enough to be interested in purchasing it.  Amphitrite is a Greek sea goddess, and many speculate that Depp renamed the ship as a tribute to another ex-partner, Amber Heard.

Less than a year after purchasing the yacht , Rowling listed it for $19.2 million, almost $8 million less than she paid just months before. PopSugar also noted that the ship could have been rented for $130,000 per week instead of purchasing it outright.

The Amphitrite’s specs and features

According to Variety, the Amphitrite is a 156-foot Motoryacht that features five bedrooms, a home cinema, a salon, a state-of-the-art entertainment system , three decks, and plenty of outdoor seating space. The yacht was built in 2001, but it features plenty of unique and old-fashioned decor that makes it appear like it’s from a different era. Boat International reports that the yacht was designed by Tanju Kalaycioglu and was inspired by the 1930s.

28,000-liter fuel tanks power the yacht, and it can cruise at a speed of 12.5 knots. It has an estimated range of around 3,200 nautical miles. Plus, the yacht comes fitted with quantum zero-speed stabilizers for a smoother ride.

Other celebrity yachts

Depp and Rowling aren’t the only two celebrities that have delved into the world of yacht ownership. One of the most celebrity yachts, Venus , was purchased by the late Steve Jobs, but it wasn’t unveiled until a year after his death. It’s now owned and used by his family, and it is registered to George Town, Cayman Islands. Venus  is a 256-foot yacht that was first launched in 2012, according to Boat International .

Bill Gates also owns a yacht, the Sinot Aqua, and it’s completely hydrogen-powered . Hydrogen is cooled to -423 °F when it is in its liquid state, where it can be used to propel the ship. The only byproduct from this process is water, making it a zero-emission process. It has an estimated worth of $644 million.

Another yacht unlike any other is the Astoria, owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd. This old-fashioned yacht was built in 1911 and had enough space to accommodate a 90-piece orchestra on its deck. When Gilmour purchased the yacht in 1986, he converted it to a recording studio, where the final three Pink Floyd albums were recorded. Boat International reports that these days, it sits anchored on the River Thames in Greater London.

Blown away: The Harry Potter author, who's reportedly worth £580 million, was wooed by the 156ft vessel after holidaying onboard with husband Neil Murray and their two children David, 12, and Mackenzie, ten

Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp previously named the yacht Vajoliroja - a pun on the Jolly Roger pirate flag when said aloud - after his ex-partner Vanessa Paradis and their children Lily-Rose and Jack.

However, its name was changed to Amphitrite, a sea goddess and Poseidon's wife in Greek mythology, in February 2015, as a gift to his new wife Amber Heard, 29.

After their L.A. marriage, Depp reportedly said he was wiping the slate clean of his previous marriage to Vanessa Paradis - and changing the yacht's name was a significant move.

Fighting back: Last month, Rowling (pictured in 2012 at the Lennoxlove Book Festival) hit back at criticism of the casting of Hermione Granger in new stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child

A representative for JK Rowling declined to comment.

Last month, Rowling hit back at criticism of the casting of Hermione Granger in new stage play Harry Potter And The Cursed Child.

The writer voiced her support for Swaziland-born actress Noma Dumezweni, 45, who is taking on the role made famous by Emma Watson in the blockbuster films.

The Scottish writer silenced critics after several social media users expressed confusion at the divergence, with some even making openly racist comments, stating that Hermione's skin colour had in fact never been specified in the books.

Hermione is described as having unruly brown ‘bushy hair’, which she hates. In fact there are screeds of essays and scholarly works arguing that Hermione could be black.

One piece observed that she was born to Muggle, non-wizard, parents and was considered an outsider at Hogwarts – and coded as a racial minority in the wizarding world.

At Hogwarts, Hermione was often taunted as a ‘Mudblood’, an insult thrown at Muggle-born wizards.

Group Attempted to Doxx J.K. Rowling's Daughter: They May Soon Face Some Serious Consequences

A Harry Potter fan page made waves in recent months with its failed attempts to doxx author J.K. Rowling's daughter.

In response, she's threatening to take legal action.

According to Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday, the site -- the 22-year-old Wizarding News -- posted a picture of a woman and a link to her Instagram account on X, claiming the woman was Rowling's estranged daughter currently living in Portugal.

Wizarding News has routinely targeted Rowling for her opposition to the radical transgender agenda , specifically the political notion that men should be allowed to infringe on women's rights, spaces and privileges.

"Reminder that JK Rowling’s eldest daughter (the one with whom she was famously pregnant while writing Harry Potter) changed her last name to literally get away from Rowling, and moved to Portugal," the account posted to X, according to Entertainment Weekly. “Did you know? JK Rowling is a grandmother. Have any of you ever seen her talk about grandchildren?”

After the claims were disputed, Wizarding News removed the posts along with a brief statement via X post. The statement wasn't exactly an overly apologetic one.

“Deleted the post with photos and link to that Instagram hours ago, Jo. Glad you seem to be self-aware enough that you're now publicly acknowledging the hate your bigoted rhetoric engenders,” the account posted.

The Wizard News X account is now locked.

Rowling has come out strongly against the brazen attempt to doxx her daughter's identity on X , saying it puts not just her own family in danger, but others as well.

Could somebody who isn’t blocked by this account tell them this is untrue in all respects, as I suspect they already know. Lying about my kids is a new low, even by this website’s subterranean standards. pic.twitter.com/q2Gmd9SGux

"Could somebody who isn’t blocked by this account tell them this is untrue in all respects, as I suspect they already know. Lying about my kids is a new low, even by this website’s subterranean standards," Rowling posted on Wednesday.

In a follow-up post, the wildly successful author clarified that she would be taking legal action without a full retraction and apology.

. @wizardingnews I've done everything I can to keep my children out of the public eye. My eldest daughter doesn't owe you or anyone else details of her private life. However, for the avoidance of doubt:

"@wizardingnews I've done everything I can to keep my children out of the public eye. My eldest daughter doesn't owe you or anyone else details of her private life," Rowling wrote.

"However, for the avoidance of doubt: 1. Contrary to your claims, we are very close and last talked an hour ago. We discussed your posts, which have angered and distressed her. 2. Contrary to your claims, she doesn't live in Portugal. 3. Contrary to your claims, she has no children. 4. The young mother whose photograph and personal details you published is not my daughter and has no relation to me whatsoever.

"You've published easily disproven and damaging falsehoods. Should we go to legal proceedings, you will need to show why, in spite of being told the truth, you neither retracted nor apologised.

"In the absence of any such retraction and apology, the next communication you receive will be from my lawyer."

J.K. Rowling threatens lawsuit against ‘Harry Potter’ fansite over lies about her daughter

J.K. Rowling is warning social media site Wizarding News that she’s prepared to take legal action if they continue spreading false information about her family.

The Harry Potter author took to X on Wednesday to respond to recent posts from the site, which launched as a Harry Potter news aggregator in 2002 but has since become an ardent critic, “reporting on the demise of J.K. Rowling’s legacy.”

One such post reported the author has an estranged daughter who changed her last name and moved to Portugal to “get away from Rowling.”

The site also allegedly shared images of a baby which they claimed was Rowling’s granddaughter, and included location details of where the child lived.

“This is not a joke. The baby and its mother have no connection with me,” Rowling wrote in response. “That isn’t my daughter. Your vendetta against me is causing collateral damage to innocent people. If legal action is the only way to protect them, I will take it.”

The 58-year-old followed it up with another post, in which she refuted the claims in further detail, concluding, “In the absence of any such retraction and apology, the next communication you receive will be from my lawyer.”

It didn’t take long for Wizarding News to comply. The account on X, which boasts nearly 38,000 followers, issued an apology directed not at the author, but her daughter.

“We are unreservedly sorry... to J.K. Rowling’s eldest daughter... for understandably mixing her up with a VERY coincidentally named person found in multiple published online articles and biographies identifying her as such, and extrapolating and sharing inaccurate details therefrom,” they wrote.

Wizarding News doubled down on their stance however, arguing that what they posted was similar to the negative things Rowling has said about the LGBTQ community.

“We were wrong about some information today, and owned up to it,” they wrote. “Just curious... when’s the last time J.K. Rowling apologized for posting something offensive or outright wrong, and retracted it?"

They added they’ll refocus their reporting on Rowling herself, and less on her family, moving forward.
