A Superyacht’s Own Floating Island - The Next Industry Innovation?

By Editorial Team 6 February 2015
An upcoming superyacht designer has proposed what could be the next must-have accessory for charter yachts - a floating, multi-purpose ‘recreational island.’
Soon prospective yacht charterers may have another amenity to ponder when looking for a superyacht that boasts a helipad, swimming pool or movie theatre, as a mobile island could become a reality in the near future.
Measuring approximately 33ft by 26ft, specialist in innovative nautical solutions, Henry Ward, has continued to push the boundaries of luxury yacht design with his concept of a folding, floating platform, in collaboration with leading nautical architects BMT Nigel Gee. Compact and easily stored in the tender bays of superyachts measuring over 230ft, the island could provide the ultimate in privacy so charter guests can enjoy the beauty of their cruising destinations completely undisturbed.
The island could feature luxuries including a glass-bottomed seating area, golfing platform, a slide-out sunbed, bar and dining area and facilities to optimise use of charter yacht’s water toys in the surrounding waters. The design can be tailor-made to superyacht owner’s own personal requirements.
To be launched by tender cranes, the versatile island attaches to a yacht’s transom for potential use as a helipad to save deck space and solve the issue of tight helicopter landing rules. Towable by tender to shallow waters beyond a superyacht’s reach, once unfolded in the water, the island will accommodate guest’s every need and can hold up to 10 tonnes in weight.
Opened by a pressurised hydraulic system, Henry Wards and BMT Nigel Gee have proposed that four anchors will hold the island in place whilst guests enjoy the unique experience.
Allowing guests to save their charter yacht’s deck space for other uses, the floating island is a promising solution to the burning question of ‘how do you make the luxury yacht charter experience even more luxurious?’
Compare superyachts available for charter by their state-of-the-art features to find the ideal vessel for your requirements.

An architectural and engineering revolution on water!
Visions of the future are often constrained by familiarity with the present or reflection on the past. Project Utopia, a collaboration between Yacht Island Design and BMT Nigel Gee, is an avant-garde vision of a future concept free from such restricted thought.
Before trying to understand the design one has to examine why the greater majority of yachts have evolved to the traditional form that has derived from millennia of engineering and naval architecture. Once the mind is free from these constraints the possible forms that a concept might take are wide ranging.
Much is made in today’s design community of starting with a blank sheet of paper. Yet many if not all yacht concepts revert back to that traditional form; the perception that a yacht should be a form of transport becomes an immediate constraint.
Utopia is not an object to travel in, it is a place to be, an island established for anyone who has the vision to create such a place. Measuring 100m in length and breadth, and spanning over 11 decks with the equivalent volume of a present-day cruise liner there is enough space to create an entire micronation.
In today’s context Project Utopia might be viewed as a folly, an extravagant expression of architecture and form based on a perception of the future. The visionary will, however, be able to grasp the paradigm shift and see the future as being totally unconstrained.
Key features
• 100m x 100m in size, with the equivalent deck space of today’s cruise liners. • Space to create a bewildering amount of interior design options, such as a retail district, theatre, culinary zone containing an eclectic mix of restaurants and an entertainment zone featuring bars, nightclubs and a casino. • An observatory deck with breath taking 360 degree views at a height of 65m above sea level. • A true architectural, and engineering masterpiece designed to present the smallest possible profile to the water’s surface.

This $8 Billion Turtle-Shaped Yacht Is Not a Joke
By Katherine McLaughlin
Among many things that weren’t on our Bingo cards for 2022, a giant turtle-shaped yacht—which is also being described as a floating city —is certainly at the top of the list. And yet, here we are. As CNN reported, an Italian design firm, Lazzarini Design Studio , has drafted plans for a massive boat shaped like an oversized tortoise with outstretched flippers. The vessel is so big that it’s not even being called a superyacht , but rather designers have described it as a terayacht. As such, it was given an appropriately big name, Pangeos , a nod to Pangea, the ancient supercontinent that once incorporated almost all of Earth’s landmasses. According to Lazzarini, the ship will be big enough to hold various hotels, apartments, condos, shopping centers, parks, and other amenities for up to 60,000 guests. The yacht will even have ship and aircraft ports so guests can visit when Pangeos isn’t docked near land. Which is helpful since, as of now, the company doesn’t foresee any strict itinerary, but rather expects the turtle to simply coast around the world.
Many of the amenities and homes are designed around a central town square.
Extending 1,800 feet in length and measuring 2,000 feet at its widest point, the boat is poised to be the largest floating structure ever built. That is, of course, if it does get built, which is a whole other obstacle in and of itself. As the Pangeos website explains, “the terayacht needs a terashipyard,” which doesn’t currently exist. The project requires a yard that is about 200 miles wide and 180 miles long, which also means dredging about 0.4 square miles of the sea with a circular dam. Once the yacht is constructed, the dam can open, flooding the area and essentially launching the vessel. Lazzarini has currently suggested the coast of Saudi Arabia as the ideal location for construction.
Since the goal is usually to minimize drag, boats don’t usually stray from the standard V shape—and are even less frequently formed like marine animals—but Pangeos ’s flippers are more than just a peculiarity. According to the company, the extremities will capture kinetic energy from the waves, which will allow the boat to cruise perpetually without emissions. The rooftop area would also be equipped with solar panels for additional power, should it be necessary; electric engines are also included in the design.
Within the terraced villa, guests can find houses, buildings, and rooftop terraces, with an upper zone that offers landing of various flying vehicles.
According to the firm, the total cost to build the massive vessel will be nothing short of $8 billion. Construction will also take, at minimum, eight years, and Lazzarini doesn’t expect that this could even begin until 2025. With a hefty price tag and decent wait time, the company has conjured a plan to alleviate both. Designed as an NFT crowdfunding project, the firm is selling “Unreal Estate,” allowing interested buyers to purchase virtual boarding tickets, hotel rooms, and even houses for a metaverse version of the yacht, which the company says will be ready for (virtual) boarding by 2023.

This Giant Floating Island In Lake Chippewa Has To Be Pushed By Boats Almost Every Year
Nestled within the picturesque landscape of Wisconsin’s Lake Chippewa lies a natural marvel that poses a unique annual challenge for the local community. This hidden wonder is none other than a giant floating island, a testament to the extraordinary forces of nature. The island, comprised of vegetation and trees, occasionally drifts around the lake, causing an inconvenience by blocking a vital bridge.
Lake Chippewa, known as the Chippewa Flowage, was born in 1923 when a vast swamp was transformed through flooding. Following this transformation, nature embarked on its journey. Peat bogs, once submerged, gradually rose to the surface, creating ideal conditions for the growth of plant seeds carried by wind and birds. Over the years, the lake’s landscape evolved as grasses and trees found a foothold. Surprisingly, the roots of these plants caused the floating bogs to expand.
Today, these floating islands come in various sizes, from the modest dimensions of a parking space to expansive acres. The grandest of them is the renowned “Forty Acre Bog,” on the lake’s western side, adorned with mature trees.
Almost annually, a heartwarming spectacle unfolds on Lake Chippewa as dozens of local boat owners join forces to push the floating island away from a bridge connecting the lake’s East and West sides. “It’s almost every year. It takes a community effort, and you must have the winds at your back to push them in,” remarked a resident.
The Chippewa Flowage website sheds light on the formation of these unique floating islands. They originate as mud flats that rise from the swamp’s depths. Over time, vegetation takes root, and some of the oldest islands boast trees that act as sails, propelling the entire mass across the lake.
For the locals, keeping an eye on the whereabouts of the floating island has become a daily ritual. “It’s one of the first things you look for when you come in here in the morning: Where’s the bog?” shared Denny Reyes, a resident.
Although the decades-old floating island does not relocate constantly, when it does, it presents challenges for the community by obstructing the vital bridge that serves as the sole passage between the lake’s East and West sides. To resolve this issue, boat owners unite, forming a flotilla of vessels that collectively exert their efforts. Last year, 25 boats successfully nudged the floating island away from the bridge.
Moving the island requires precision, as merely relocating it a short distance may result in its return within days. Local homeowner Greg Kopke explained, “When we move it, we gotta get it in the right spot, or it can be back in a couple of days.”
These floating islands, such as the Forty Acre Bog, are legally protected and home to diverse animal species. Consequently, they cannot be dismantled or disrupted, highlighting the delicate balance between human convenience and environmental conservation.
The annual ritual of relocating Lake Chippewa’s floating island is a testament to the coexistence of humanity and nature, a heartwarming display of community unity, and a reminder of the importance of preserving the unique habitats that enrich our world.

6 ultimate island-hopping itineraries for 2024
Explore the world from the deck of your own yacht with a skippered charter, bareboat or flotilla holiday. Whether you’re a first-timer, a foodie or a family, there’s a sailing itinerary to suit every type of traveller.
Craving a holiday with the freedom to escape the crowds and explore hidden coves, secluded bays and uninhabited islands? Dreaming of anchoring somewhere to take a dip without another person in sight? Sailing enables you to access remote spots that are often inaccessible by land and to experience the diversity of a region, exploring islands, villages and resorts in a single trip. Whether you're just starting out, or keen to set out with little ones in tow, these itineraries suit every type of sailor.
1. Best for first timers: British Virgin Islands (BVIs)
Calm seas, sheltered anchorages, reliable steady trade winds and easy line-of-sight sailing make the BVIs one of the world’s best sailing destinations for less experienced sailors. The proximity of its islands also means you only need to sail for an hour or two to gain a sense of adventure and achievement as you successfully navigate to the next port of call. Set sail in Tortola and continue on to Virgin Gorda to witness The Baths, a geological wonder made up of granite boulders that stretch down the beach into the sea. Look out for hawksbill turtles as you sail on to tiny specks of land such as the idyllic Saba Rock, and be sure to end the day with a rum cocktail or two at one of the region’s many laid-back bars, which are often perched on unblemished stretches of white sand.
2. Best for families: Croatia
The calm, clear waters of the Adriatic combined with favourable weather conditions in summer provide easy sailing for families and, with more than 1,000 islands dotted along the Dalmatian Coast, there’s a range of activities and attractions with short hops to keep kids engaged. Set sail from the picturesque marina village of Agana and cruise gently to islands such as Brač, Šolta and Hvar, encouraging children to help out on board while keeping an eye out for passing dolphins. With their sheltered bays and clear waters, these islands are ideal stops for families. Spend an afternoon paddling in Brač’s Bobovišća Bay, before setting sail for the remote islands of the Kornati Archipelago, a wild and beautiful national park known for its empty hiking trails. Sailing stops here can be educational, too, with a plethora of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and picturesque port towns steeped in history.
3. Best for food-lovers: Italy
Why base yourself on land to sample Italy’s incredible gastronomy when you can sail from region to region tasting the very best food and wine at numerous ports of call? Sunsail’s SailEatalia’s Italian Cuisine Procida Flotilla departs from the glamourous port town of Procida and sails to the Pontine Islands along the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast, offering stops to taste local cuisine, from classic dishes to regional delicacies as well as the country’s finest wine. Sample Ischia's iconic stewed rabbit in an independent restaurant at the top of a mountain or try the Italian coastal delicacy alici da portare (pasta with anchovies, olives and capers) in the quaint fishing village of Cetara.
4. Best for winter sun: Antigua
Gloriously warm weather between December and May and around 365 powdery white beaches lapped by clear waters make Antigua a popular winter sun destination for British travellers. Sailors can also relax knowing the region has consistent trade winds, safe anchorages and fairly short distances between ports, giving you more time to explore a variety of attractions at your own pace. Drop anchor in Deep Bay to snorkel around the famous shipwreck the Andes , discover uninhabited islands and visit famous places like Nelson’s Dockyard to sip cocktails and dance to the lively music of traditional steel bands.
5. Best for culture vultures: Croatia
A cultural treasure trove with 10 UNESCO World Heritage Sites ranging from Roman fortresses to hilltop castles, Croatia is a mecca for sailors with a penchant for history and art. Start and finish a week’s charter in Dubrovnik to explore one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on Earth, touring ancient citadels and Renaissance palaces, and be sure to include Lokrum, home to the ruins of a Benedictine monastery. Sail north and discover Mljet National Park and the island getaway of Korčula, thought to be the birthplace of famed explorer Marco Polo, where museums, galleries and excellent restaurants line the beautiful cobbled streets and defensive walls of the town.
6. Best for island-hopping: Greece
With thousands of islands scattered fairly close together, sailing from one to another is a breeze with the promise of a remote white sand or perfect pebble beach around every headland. Sailors are spoilt for choice, but the Ionian Islands, off the west coast of the mainland, are ideal for beginners looking for tranquil stretches of gin-clear water with light winds and warm temperatures in summer. Sail to Ithaca or Kefaloni in the south or to Lefkas, Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu. While Corfu is known for its party vibe and high-end beach bars, others, like tiny Antipaxos, feature just a scattering of houses, no proper roads and a couple of charming waterside tavernas where you can watch local fishermen bring in the day's catch.

A lake in the US is home to a giant floating island that moves around, so every year local boat owners get together and push the island away.
Lake Chippewa is a man-made lake that was created in 1923 by flooding a large swamp. Soon after that, many of the peat bogs started rising to the surface and became perfect growing spots for plants, with seeds carried by wind and wild birds to this floating paradise.
Over the years these ‘bogs’ have grown plants and trees and turned into full islands. Some have grown to the size of a parking space while others are several hectares.
According to the Chippewa Flowage website, the lake’s unique floating islands start out as mud flats risen from the swamp at the bottom, but as time goes by, vegetation starts to grow, and the oldest islands even have trees that act as sails when the wind blows, moving the entire floating mass around the lake.
“It’s one of the first things you look for when you come in here in the morning: Where’s the bog?” local man Denny Reyes said.
The largest of them, called “Forty Acre Bog”, has however become a danger with its matured trees and large surface area, especially as its yearly drift pushes it towards a bridge connecting the East and West sides of the lake.
When that happens, the only way to move it is by boat. And not just one big boat, but dozens of them working together, with the wind at their back.
Last year, 25 boats were used to push the floating island away from the bridge.
“When we move it, we gotta get it kind of in the right spot, or it can be back in in a couple of days”, local homeowner Greg Kopke said.
Because floating islands like the Forty Acre Bog are a habitat for various animal species, they are protected by law and cannot be broken apart. So the locals are left with only one option. Push it!
It’s an eerie sight to see boats pushing an island:
You have to wonder though, can they not just anchor it? Asking as a landlubber.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP
!{Model.Description}
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.
The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.
The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.
Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

Russian floating nuclear power plant set for first refuel
The new Russian nuclear power plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, is the only floating one of its kind in the world.

Nuclear fuel has been delivered to the world’s first floating nuclear power plant, which is located in Pevek in the Chukotka region of north-east Russia. The plant, named Akademik Lomonosov, supplies heat and power to the town and is based on two KLT-40S reactors generating 35MW each.
The fuel was delivered to the site by TVEL, Rosatom’s fuel division, via the Northern Sea Route and manufactured by TVEL’s Elektrostal Machine-Building Plant in the Moscow region.

According to TVEL, unlike land-based reactors that require replacement of a proportion of their fuel rods every 12–18 months, “the refuelling takes place once every few years and incudes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor”. As such, there can be up to three and a half years between refuelling.
Akademik Lomonosov first became operational in December 2019. At the time the reactor was seen as a pilot project for a future fleet of floating nuclear power plants and onshore installations based on Russian-made small modular reactors. Due to their functionality, they are intended for deployment in disparate areas of Russia’s north and far-east. The operable reactor was named after 18 th century Russian scientist Mikhail Lomonosov , who was the first native Russian to be appointed to the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1742.
The plant is 144m long and 30m wide. It supplies electricity to the town of Pevek, which has a population of around 4,000, but could potentially supply a city of up to 100,000 people. Rosatom is currently constructing four floating power units, which it plans to export.
In June, Andrey Nikipelov, Rosatom’s deputy director-general for mechanical engineering and industrial solutions, said : “In addition to environmental friendliness and stable operation, floating nuclear power units are able to provide energy independence – both from the main power grids and, in a broader sense, protection from the volatility of energy markets… floating power units have great commercial potential both in Russia and abroad.”
