Firebird by Andrey Yakunin: Arctic cruise turned tropical

The owner of the sailing yacht Firebird decided to make a non-trivial journey. The geography of the route stretched from the Arctic to the Antarctic.

The pandemic has made its own adjustments. This is the story of Andrey Yakunin and his yacht Firebird about how his ice tour turned into a tropical one.

Firebird plans

Firebird looks like the most common Oyster sailing yacht. However, its owner Andrey Yakunin never aspired to a traditional sailing program.

Yakunin is a big fan of skiing, so the yacht has spent most of the last five years on the Lyngenfjord peninsula in Norway.

However, in 2019, he decided it was time to expand the capabilities of Firebird. Andrey has a grandiose travel plan.

The route was planned in more than a year, and a lot of work was done on the yacht. Everything to make sure she can handle the task.

“For three years we have worked very hard to adapt  Firebird,  so that she is ready for the program that we are going to implement, ”explains Yakunin.

"We have Kevlar rudders that are ice resistant, we obviously have heating systems on board, and we also designed a Kevlar nose cone that we can put on the nose to protect it from ice drift and slush."

Unfortunately, none of these preparations have been able to mitigate a global pandemic that would have entailed blocking and closing borders.

The beginning of the way

The first part of the route  Firebird  went exactly as planned. The boat and the crew passed this part of the way back on their maiden voyage in May 2019. “We left Norway in mid-April and went to Svalbard as early as possible,” says Captain Peter Madey, who was on board to help with this section of the route.

The yacht was mainly based near Longyearbyen. “We had a good chance to go as far north as possible,” says Captain Madei. "We managed to reach almost 81 degrees."

Yakunin was not disappointed by the new area. “When we walked past major cities and trade routes, the vastness was incredible,” he says.

Wildlife was also abundant. “You can watch wildlife for hours,” says Captain Madei. “A family of belugas lives near the town of Pyramiden. We managed to spend a couple of hours in their company. Of course, there were also polar bears. But the most striking event was the sighting of the blue whale! I didn't expect to see this; it was great to see the largest animal on earth. "

Firebird Path South

From Svalbard  Firebird  returned to the UK and then headed to the Canary Islands and the Caribbean for the winter season. Yakunin was unable to join the ferry, but returned to the yacht to cruise in Saint Lucia and the Grenadines.

In March, when Covid-19 started to make headlines, he joined Firebird. ,  to take part in the Superyacht Challenge Antigua.

“My wife and I flew in for race week, so we had two pairs of shorts and three T-shirts in our wardrobe,” he laughs. “We won in our class and it was very nice. At the time, I didn’t realize that we would remain unbeatable for a whole year, as this was the only event in superyacht racing that could happen. ”

Pandemic and Antigua

Then the pandemic began to take over the world more and more. Yakunin was the first to admit that he underestimated the impact she should have had on his plans for a global trip.

“All travel restrictions started to work, and my wife and I thought, how long will it last? A week? Maybe two? ”Yakunin recalls.

Deciding that they would be better off in Antigua than quarantined in London, they decided to stay on the yacht. “Looking back, I realized that my forecast was somewhat optimistic,” he admits.

“We were stuck there and all the Caribbean islands were in serious isolation. On the other hand, it gave us a good chance to explore the island inside and out. To the point where I think now we could write our own guide! "

On the islands, the team wasted no time - diving and testing became the main activities. The team tested the yacht's equipment with a local expert, Lee Cunningham.

Yakunin and  To team boats desperately trying to figure out a route to Antarctica. “We actually spent a month in Antigua, making route after route,” Yakunin recalls.

New routes!

All options were considered, including driving along the Atlantic coast through Brazil and crossing from Antigua directly to Easter Island. However, in the end, the realization began to come that a visit to Antarctica was impossible.

“When [polar explorer] Skip Novak announced that he was giving up the trip, it was a pretty clear signal,” says Yakunin. "If he said it was unreasonable, then who are we to try to prove it?"

However, with hurricane season approaching, Firebird needed to move somewhere. At this stage, Plan C was developed and the yacht was prepared for sailing to French Polynesia.

As part of the preparations, Mate Captain Daniel Hardy flew out with the crew to meet the yacht for the next leg of the voyage. “It was quite difficult to get out of here,” he recalls.

“We were not allowed to transit Miami, so we had to fly to Paris and then to Guadeloupe. Then we took us by private plane from Guadeloupe to Antigua. "

Long Road Firebird

With Hardy and a new crew aboard, Firebird left Antigua, not knowing where and when she would next be allowed to return to shore. “I can show a lot of countries that we sailed past, but where we were not allowed to stop,” says Yakunin.

"Colombia, Panama, USA - and nowhere were we allowed to enter the port." Fortunately, the yacht's agent managed to negotiate that  Firebird  stopped to refuel and took provisions before crossing the Panama Canal.

“We were placed in a quarantine dock with police tape and guards around us. The food was delivered to the pontoon, and then after 20 minutes we were allowed to go to the pontoon to pick up the food, ”explains Yakunin.

After crossing the canal, the crew had to overcome almost 4,000 nautical miles of the ocean to get to the Marquesas Islands. The journey is almost double that of crossing the Atlantic, but a good wind helped their cause.

“Mostly all the way downwind and conditions were great,” says Captain Hardy. This transition was an ordeal for the owner and the team, and for most of them it was the longest journey.

“Of course, 25.9 meters is a big boat, but still a rather limited space,” says Yakunin. “I think we invested in the team all the time and made sure that everyone had common interests. We also had a dedicated nose room for those who were tired of everyone. You could sit there alone. "

A little rest before the end of the journey

After another crew change, Yakunin and his wife were able to set off to explore French Polynesia. When the restrictions began to ease, some friends and family were also able to fly in.

As autumn approached, hopes of continuing westward began to fade, and the only option available was to cruise directly to Japan.

“We decided that there was a fine line between stupidity and persistence and that our journey was probably over long ago,” says Yakunin. Fortunately, a few weeks later, the transport ship was returning from Tahiti and the Firebird was able to safely return to the UK.

Despite his love for warm tropical water, Yakunin is still a fan of northern latitudes. “You don’t have to fight for a barbecue spot on the beach. You are more worried about whether a polar bear will join you, ”he jokes.

With this in mind, Firebird is currently making further preparations in Southampton before heading north. There Yakunin wants to spend another season of his ski and sailing program in Norway.

She will then travel to Iceland and Greenland. “We are all very happy to set sail again,” says Yakunin. "Hopefully this time we don't make any wrong turns, resulting in a 5,000 mile detour."

How Much Do Superyachts Cost?

firebird superyacht owner

When it comes to superyachts, the sky is the limit when it comes to cost.

These luxury vessels come with hefty price tags that can range from anywhere between $30 million to over $400 million.

So, if youre in the market for a superyacht, youre looking at an investment that could easily break the bank.

The cost of a superyacht is driven by a variety of factors, including size, amenities, and customization.

Generally, the larger the yacht, the more expensive it will be.

Superyachts typically range in size from 100 feet to over 200 feet, and they can be as wide as 40 feet.

The bigger the yacht, the more luxurious features and amenities it will have.

Amenities also play a significant role in the cost of a superyacht.

While some owners prefer to keep their yachts out of the public eye, others have made headlines with their extensive amenities.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, the sky is the limit when it comes to customizing a superyacht.

The more amenities a superyacht has, the more expensive it will be.

Finally, customization is another major factor that will drive up the cost of a superyacht.

Many luxury vessels have custom-designed interiors that are tailored to the owners tastes.

From custom furniture and artwork to lighting and audio systems, the cost of a superyacht can quickly escalate depending on the level of customization.

In short, the cost of a superyacht can vary widely depending on its size, amenities, and customization.

While some may be able to get away with spending a few million dollars, others may end up spending hundreds of millions of dollars on their dream yacht.

No matter what your budget is, its important to do your research and find out exactly what youre getting for your money before signing on the dotted line.

Keeping Superyachts Out of the Public Eye

When it comes to owning a superyacht, some owners prefer to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

Understandably, these individuals are concerned with privacy and discretion, and therefore tend to take measures to ensure their yachts are not visible to outsiders.

For instance, some superyacht owners opt to keep their vessels in private marinas, away from the public areas of larger ports.

Additionally, some yacht owners may choose to hire security guards to patrol and protect their vessels while they are moored or sailing.

In addition to physical security, some superyacht owners also use technology to keep their vessels out of the public eye.

For example, a yacht owner may choose to install a satellite-based communications system that allows them to keep their vessel completely off-radar.

This system works by bouncing signals off satellites rather than transmitting them, making it virtually impossible for anyone to track the yachts movements.

Finally, some superyacht owners also choose to limit the number of people who have access to their vessels.

For instance, the owner may only allow family members and close friends to board the yacht.

Additionally, the owner may choose to employ a limited number of staff to help maintain the vessel and keep it running smoothly.

These individuals may be required to sign non-disclosure agreements to ensure they do not disclose any information about the yacht or its owner.

Overall, while some superyacht owners may choose to keep their vessels out of the public eye, there are still plenty of other ways to show off the opulence associated with owning a superyacht.

From swimming pools and helicopter pads to on-board cinemas and spas, there are many luxurious amenities that can make a superyacht the envy of any jet setter.

Final Thoughts

Superyachts are a symbol of luxury and status, and the list of yacht owners reads like a who’s who of billionaires.

From the Emir of Qatar’s world-record breaking $400 million yacht to Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s vessel with a helicopter pad and on-board spa, the amenities of these luxury vessels are truly stunning.

With prices ranging from $30 million to over $400 million, owning a superyacht is an expensive endeavor.

Whether you’re looking to purchase one or just curious to learn more about the owners and their amenities, this guide will provide you with all the information you need to stay up to date with the superyacht scene.

The epic 10,000-nautical-mile adventure of 48.5m Flyghtship V6

Related articles, superyacht directory.

For many, an ambitious expedition voyage from the sun-kissed marinas of West Palm Beach to the icy realms of Svalbard would have been years in the planning. However, in June 2020, with Covid-19 taking hold around the world, the new owner of 48.5-metre V6 decided there was no time like the present. The owner and Captain Christoph Schaefer talk us through their Voyager’s Award-winning “shakedown cruise”...

The whole idea behind owning a yacht is to be able to go to places you need a boat to visit,” says the owner of 48.5-metre New Zealand-built Flyghtship V6 . It was this desire to head further afield that persuaded him to purchase his first yacht, after more than a decade of chartering. “The charter market is focused on the traditional yachting centres in the Med and the Caribbean, and we wanted to see new and exotic places off the trodden path,” he explains.

With this desire in mind, Edmiston ’s James Lloyd found V6 and introduced the owner to experienced expedition captain Christoph Schaefer. “It was the end of May, and I had just finished a stint on Gene Machine . I was in between jobs, but I was actually quite happy to be at home,” Schaefer recalls. However, when he got the call about the opportunity on V6 he agreed to have a chat with the owner. “I spoke to him for about 20 minutes and then I said to my wife ‘This is just too good an opportunity to pass up.’”

During their initial conversation, Schaefer pitched the route for a “Covid summer”, visiting the Canary Islands before heading north to explore the east coast of Ireland and Scotland. Schaefer then suggested crossing into Norway, ending the summer in icy Svalbard. “The proposal that Christoph came up with is pretty much what we did during this first summer. It turned out to be the perfect trip,” says the owner.

Th e sale was completed in June 2020 , and with the yacht renamed V6 it was a quick turnaround for the new crew to put Schaefer’s suggested itinerary into action. “We picked up the boat and within four days we left Fort Lauderdale and did the Atlantic crossing,” says Schaefer. “Then, when we arrived in the Canary Islands, I jumped in a car and went to the airport to pick up the owner. The rest of the family then came out two days later; we were still very much learning about the boat at that stage.”

Despite the challenging circumstances the pandemic caused, Schaefer was pleased to be able to introduce his new boss to the Canary Islands, which he considers one of the “most underrated cruising destinations”. “The weather is really benign, and it has predictable temperatures all year round. There’s also plenty to do, it has great culture, excellent fishing and absolutely fantastic food.” Schaefer, who previously spent four weeks in the area with 60.35-metre Vive La Vie , also argues there is greater variety than you might expect. “You have Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which are basically desert islands. Then the more to the west you go, the greener it gets. La Palma is subtropical with lush vegetation. You have got a bit of everything,” he enthuses.

The owner, who is an avid kitesurfer, was equally impressed with the Canary Islands as a yachting and kiting destination. “Lanzarote was one of the few places that was Covid-free in July 2020,” he says. “The conditions for kitesurfing in Fuerteventura were ideal and it set the tone for the rest of the summer. V6 was the only large yacht in the area at the time and we virtually had the place to ourselves – exactly what you want during a pandemic.”

After their time in the Canary Islands, the family briefly departed while the yacht headed north via Gibraltar. They rejoined V6 in Brittany, stopping for a few days in the Isles of Scilly before exploring the east coast of Ireland.  “We went into Dublin especially because our kite pro is from there and we anchored right in front of his parents’ house,” says Schaefer. The yacht then continued into Strangford Lough, to dodge the unsettled weather, which plagued V6 during her time in the Irish Sea. “It was funny, because we dropped anchor there and we were making jokes about the weird noises we were hearing,  I said it’s the White Walkers. The next morning, I found out we were right next to Castle Ward, which was used as a filming location in Game of Thrones ,” Schaefer explains.

After sheltering in the lough for a couple of days, V6 then made her way past the Mull of Kintyre to the calm waters off Islay and Jura. Most of the whisky distilleries in this region were closed due to the pandemic, but the family were able to pay a visit to Tobermory Distillery, which is famous for its single malts. From there the yacht went on to the island of Tiree. “It is one of the most well-known kiting stops up there so obviously we didn’t miss that one out, and it didn’t disappoint,” says Schaefer. “We also came across a whole shiver of basking sharks. Unfortunately, it was too rough to get into the water with them but that was pretty amazing.”

V6 experienced plenty of “typical British summer weather” during the cruise, but this didn’t hamper the owner’s enjoyment. “The joy about cruising is to experience the local conditions,” he says. “Rainy days, fog and stormy weather are all very much part of the British summer. Ireland and Scotland show themselves in this very special light and mood when any kind of weather moves in, highlighting the rugged landscape with large Atlantic swells breaking on the exposed shoreline, rays of sunlight breaking through the low clouds bathing the green slopes in intense light, the air is fresh and crisp – it has its very own magic. Plus, enjoying a whisky after a cold, wet and windy walk is certainly more enjoyable than sipping it in the heat of a Spanish beach.”

After continuing on to the Shetland Isles, stopping in Lerwick, V6 left the British Isles – and the British weather – behind her, crossing into Norwegian waters to Bergen. The yacht then spent nearly three weeks cruising the 1,000 nautical miles up to Tromsø. “It’s all smooth sailing, you hardly get a drop of salt water on the decks because it is all through the fjords. It’s basically inland,” says Schaefer. “We mainly cruised at night, even though it doesn’t really get dark there, and we would then try and be at anchor by eight or nine o’clock the next morning. Then the family would just spend the entire day rafting, hiking or paddleboarding around the fjords to enjoy the scenery.”

The global lockdown also meant that the family were able to have some of Norway’s most famous tourist attractions practically to themselves. “We only encountered two other large yachts in Norway, both of them recent Amels launches,” says the owner. “We also crossed paths with one small cruise ship coming in to Nordfjord. It is easy enough to avoid crowds in Norway even during a busy summer, but you will probably never experience some of the more popular fjords such as Geiranger or Sognefjord the way we did.” This was a silver lining to the pandemic that the owner hadn’t initially considered. “The major objective was to be away from the crowded urban centres, to have the children out of school and as far away from any source of infection,” he explains. “It only really dawned on us how exceptional this summer shaped up to be in this respect once we were well into our cruise.”

The grand finale of V6 ’s summer expedition was two weeks in the Svalbard archipelago in search of polar bears. To help achieve this aim, the yacht was joined by polar bear expert Jason Roberts, who has worked on BBC television programmes including Planet Earth and The Blue Planet . His expertise quickly proved invaluable as he was able to direct the yacht to a fjord off the Hinlopen Strait where a group of bears were feeding on a whale carcass. “It was amazing seeing the polar bears up close,” says the owner. “The bears had set up their quarters on a small island, not just a handful but 14 of them – huge, fat and very relaxed, with the odd cub in between.” Captain Schaefer witnessed an equally remarkable sight one morning when anchored off a small island. “I looked out my porthole while having a shower and counted no less than six fat polar bears. It was incredible –  I don’t believe many sailors could have had a similar experience,” he says.

Not content with watching the bears from the safety of the boat, V6 ’s owner also took the opportunity to kitesurf in the waters near the island where the huge carnivores were eating. “Kiting in the waters of this fjord was a highlight, and it was reassuring to know that the bears were not hungry at that moment, but pretty much in a blubber coma on the beach,” he says. It was the culmination of what had been a fantastic kitesurfing summer for the owner. “The single biggest new experience was probably kiting in such a short time in such  a range of diverse climates,” he says. “Kiting in 20 knots of wind with 28ºC water temperature and doing the same thing in 2ºC water are obviously not the same thing at all. Kiting in the waters of Svalbard with apex predators such as polar bears on the prowl added yet another level of excitement that is totally unique to the high north.”

After squeezing in a few final kitesurfing stop-offs and taking in the ice wall of Brasvellbree, V6 completed her final leg into Longyearbyen, marking the end of her owner’s spectacular first summer on board. The yacht is now in the process of completing her five-year survey, but the owner has already set his sights on a return to the ice, with Antarctica, Greenland and the Northwest Passage all potential destinations.

“One thing we know for sure is that we as a family are excited to push on to new places we haven’t seen yet and that our crew is equally excited about the future,” he says. “I never imagined that owning and cruising our own yacht would be just so much fun and so rewarding. In hindsight, maybe we should have gotten into ownership a little earlier!”

5 things to know about North Palm Beach mega-yacht owner, billionaire Michael Bozzuto

firebird superyacht owner

Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is fighting for the right to moor his 164-foot mega-yacht behind a waterfront house he owns at 932 Shore Dr. in North Palm Beach.

But the Village of North Palm Beach has told Bozzuto he doesn't have this right.

It's the latest example of how big money landing in Florida is running up against Old Florida residents who want their communities to stay low-key.

After years of disputes over the yacht, Bozzuto recently filed a lawsuit against the municipality, asking a judge to agree that he has the right to the use of his house and his dock.

Who is Michael Bozzuto, and why is he suing the Village of North Palm Beach?

Here are five things to know:

1. Billionaire Michael Bozzuto is a longtime North Palm Beach resident

Bozzuto is the billionaire owner of a privately held, family-owned supermarket wholesaler in Connecticut called Bozzuto's Inc. The company is a distributor of food and household products to retailers in New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Bozzuto's was founded by Michael's late father, Adam.

Even though Bozzuto's Inc. is based in Connecticut, Bozzuto has lived in the Village of North Palm Beach, population 13,000, for 20 years.

2. Besides owning a yacht, what are Michael Bozzuto's hobbies?

In addition to being a businessman, Bozzuto is an investor and philanthropist. He is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics.

He is also an under-the-radar resident who likes to collect houses and yachts, said his lawyer, former Florida Bar president Gregory Coleman.

Bozzuto bought the motor yacht, Honey, about 10 years ago for an undisclosed sum. The Westport mega-yacht was built in 2007 and is the largest of several yachts Bozzuto owns.

More: Cannonsport Marina sells for $58.5 million in big deal for tiny Palm Beach Shores

Bozzuto also owns four houses in the Village of North Palm Beach. This includes the house at 932 Shore Dr., where he wants to dock Honey. In 2014, Bozzuto paid $840,247 for the house, which was built in 1961, according to Palm Beach County property records.

The property is on a rare corner bordered on the north and east by navigable waters that provide access to the Atlantic Ocean via the Lake Worth Inlet. The east-facing dock is large enough to accommodate Honey.

Bozzuto's residence is in another part of North Palm Beach, on Harbour Isles Court.

More: Illegal boat slips are popping near Palm Beach Gardens. Residents want regulators to act

3. Michael Bozzuto's net worth isn't known but billionaire owns property outside of North Palm Beach, too

Bozzuto made waves recently when in January he paid $31.1 million for a waterfront house in nearby Palm Beach Shores.

The Singer Island house with two docks stretches into the Intracoastal Waterway just north of the Palm Beach/Lake Worth Inlet. The three-lot parcel on 1.5 acres has about 200 feet of waterfront.

The property was bought from an owner whose family had owned it for decades. It's unclear if Bozzuto will make any changes to the property.

In a brief interview in February, Bozzuto said: “It’s a house, and it will probably be a house."

Twin City Mall: North Palm clears way for redevelopment, taller buildings at landmark site

4. Why can't Bozzuto park his yacht behind his North Palm Beach house?

The Village of North Palm Beach rules say that a private dock or pier can only be used by the occupant of the house. But the village doesn't define the word "occupant."

Bozzuto's lawsuit said while the village has discussed whether to define an occupant as a resident, it never has done so.

Hundreds of other property owners dock a boat behind their North Palm Beach house but do not live there year-round.

Therefore Bozzuto said he's being singled out because neighbors just don't like his boat's big size. This selective enforcement is wrong, his lawsuit said.

Show me the money? Here it is: West Palm and Palm Beach rank in top 5 as cities with fastest growth in millionaires

5. What does North Palm Beach think about the lawsuit?

Unfortunately, this is a mystery until the village responds to Bozzuto's lawsuit in public court records.

The village's longtime lawyer, Lenard Rubin, who knows the municipality's history with boats and houses, did not respond to requests for comment. Neither did the village's manager, Chuck Huff.

The 5th edition of the International exhibition of yachts and boats –  Moscow Boat Show , held from March 20 to 25, 2012 will be hosted by the first pavilion of Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre. This popular show is dedicated not only to the specialists of the market segment and professional sportsmen but also to those who consider sailing sport to be their hobby and well cherished dream.

Moscow Boat Show

The project is the result of joint efforts of the Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre and the National Marine Industry Association. The event is supported by Aston Martin Moscow, Burevestnik Group logistics department and the Yachting specialized magazine. Moscow Boat Show is the largest project in Russia presenting all the best in the world of yachting.

The exhibition annually shows high level of attendance and has already proved as significant and noteworthy event in the world of yachts and boats. Every year new exhibitors join the list of participants, genuine “sharks” of yachting business, the quantity of visitors considerably increases and the exposition becomes more sated and diverse.

The best companies professionally involved into yachting and small navigation business – 180 exhibitors from 17 regions of the Russian Federation and 15 countries traditionally presented the best and the newest in the world of yachting at 2011 edition: from design and facilitation of vessels and up to cruising and training courses for beginning skippers. In 2011 the overall exhibit space comprised 18 000 sq m. More than 25 000 visitors came to the show.

This year the exposition space will increase up to 30 000 sq m and will be accommodated in 4 exhibition halls. The scale of the project confirms confident positions of its positive development. The organizers will try to arrange a genuine fiesta of water on land!

Quite a number of foreign exhibitors will participate in the show. Foreign companies show increasing interest to yachting business in Russia.

Moscow Boat Show provides the perfect platform from which to preview new products, evaluate market trends, and establish long-lasting and commercially profitable partnerships. Despite the dynamic changes taking place in Russia and the rapid growth of the yachting sector, the show continues to complement and reflect the industry’s demand and is a promotional opportunity not to be missed!

As its popularity and success rate has grown over the last years Moscow Boat Show 2012 has developed to incorporate more than just an exhibition. These special events serve to attract leading exhibitors and visitors and allow all participants the chance to broaden their knowledge and of course their sales potential.

Joe Lewis’ $250 million superyacht, ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable, sets sail after he pays US fine

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club owner Joe Lewis

Joe Lewis’ superyacht is on the move again after spending most of the past year holed up in a Mediterranean port while the British billionaire faced insider-trading charges in the US.

His 322-foot (98-meter) Aviva — which he put up as collateral for bail —  has traveled more than 400 nautical miles from Malta to cities along Albania’s coast as well as the Greek island of Zakynthos since  he was sentenced  April 4 to three years probation, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

After departing Zakynthos earlier this week, the Tavistock Group founder’s yacht was near Kalamata in southern Greece on Thursday morning local time, the data show. It’s the most the roughly $250 million vessel has traveled in about seven months, though it’s unclear if Lewis is on board.

Lewis, 87, pledged his yacht along with his private jet to secure his release following his arrest in July. A few months later, Aviva docked until April 5 in the Maltese capital of Valletta, where it can cost as much as €750 ($800) a night to moor vessels that exceed 75 meters.

Lewis, who was scheduled to have eye surgery in London recently, was prohibited from setting foot on the yacht that has long served as part-residence, part-office while awaiting trial. He was only allowed on board after paying a $5 million fine after sentencing, which he settled soon after the verdict in Manhattan.

A representative for Lewis, who has a net worth of about $7.3 billion according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, declined to comment.

Lewis, whose global empire includes five-star hotels, private lenders and enclaves for the wealthy, launched Aviva in 2017. It includes eight guest suites, a helipad, padel tennis court, spa and a cinema. It ranked among the world’s 25-most valuable superyachts shortly after its launch, alongside those owned by Middle Eastern royals.

The yacht has also displayed works from Lewis’ private art collection, which is valued at more than $1 billion and includes pieces by Picasso, Freud, Klimt and Degas.

Events that authorities say took place on the yacht were a key piece of evidence that prosecutors used against him.

At dinner one night in September 2019, the billionaire received favorable news about Mirati Therapeutics Inc., an oncology company where he was a major investor, leading him to pass along the tip to a host of people, including the pilots of his private jet, according to US regulators.

Those pilots — Bryan “Marty” Waugh and Patrick O’Connor — were also charged with trading on inside information. O’Connor pleaded guilty to securities fraud and conspiracy and is due to be sentenced in May, while Waugh is fighting the charges.
