Boat Maintenance

We have our own repair workshop for nautical upholstery, boat storage and winter storage in Mallorca, as well as a workshop for repairing stainless steel and nautical carpentry. We carry out maintenance of boats in live and dead work . Our staff has more than 15 years of experience and we only work with first quality products. These are some of the services we offer in the Balearic Islands for the maintenance and repair of boats:

• Antifouling treatment: we carry out antifouling of motor and sailing boats, we use antifouling products from Hempel and International, according to our experience the best quality. For shafts and blades we use material from Propspeed, guaranteeing total protection of the drive shaft. When antifouling boats it is very important to sand the hull and blades with great care to avoid future vibrations or the well known snoring sound. In the antifouling process we sand the hull with a sanding machine or by blasting the hull, applying primer and antifouling patent on the boat.
• Osmosis treatment: with regard to the repair, maintenance and prevention of osmosis in boats, it is important to know that this is a chemical reaction produced inside the resin and fibre mixture. When salt water filters through, a chemical reaction is produced that causes the well-known bubbles. To prevent osmosis in the hull of the boat, it is necessary to carry out good maintenance through antifouling of the boats.
• Boat polishing: when polishing boats in Mallorca you have to be aware of the climate we are in, the amount of sunlight we have in Mallorca means that when polishing a boat if the Gel Coat is already discoloured or worn, the durability of the polish will not be as desired. For boat polishing in Mallorca we carry out a more complete process than in other regions, we use more sensitive boat polishing heads and polishing products such as wax.
• Nautical upholstery: In our nautical upholstery service you can choose from a wide range of synthetic or natural fabrics for your boat. We also make awnings, biminis and covers for anchorages or covers made to measure for sailing and motor boats. We have different types of resinated fabrics in different thicknesses and shades depending on the type of boat or sailboat.
• Repair and maintenance of teak: regarding the nautical repairs or maintenance of teak for motor or sailing boats in Mallorca we make use of the best nautical products such as Sika or TDS (Teak Decking System), the best rubber for repairs of caulking of the boat, caulking. We carry out rubber replacement of motor and sailing boats in Mallorca as well as installation of teak decks for boats and sailboats also in Mallorca.

Yacht Maintenance Program

The problem.

Talk to anyone who’s ever owned a boat, and it’s not long before the old joke surfaces:

“What are the two happiest days in a boat owner’s life? The day they buy it, and the day they sell it!”

Many boat owners experience this because they are plagued by unforeseen expenses and costly repairs. Most of the time, however,  these are a   direct result   of poor maintenance, and are completely preventable . Buying the boat is the easy part – keeping it in working order and reliable can quickly become a losing battle. Who hasn’t made the drive (across town or across the state) to the boat, only to find an engine won’t start, the AC is out, or the batteries went dead and the fridge is warm? The purpose of this program is to make the days between the purchase and sale more trouble free and enjoyable.

The Downward Spiral…

Boats can be equipped with a multitude of complex on-board systems. For each system or piece of equipment there is likely an owner’s or service manual – for everything from the engine to the emergency bilge pump. Tucked away, deep inside each one of those manuals is something that rarely sees the light of day… the Manufacturer’s Recommended Maintenance Schedule! While the automotive industry has this down to a science (and warranty coverage often requires it be followed…), most boat manufacturers do very little to compile any type of comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule. It’s no wonder boats become a maintenance nightmare. From the start, there are very few tools or services to effectively manage the maintenance of complex systems found aboard most pleasure boats. As the size of the boat increases, the complexity of on-board systems can go up exponentially. If you’re talking about a 22’ sailboat, chances are you can track maintenance in your head. On larger boats, however, the onboard systems, and the maintenance they require, can grow uncontrollably. The end result is that as the boat ages, little preventive maintenance is done. Eventually a line is crossed and entire systems or pieces of equipment have to be replaced, instead of simply maintained. The boat then becomes the proverbial “hole in the water you’re shoveling money into”, and repair expenses pile up. Had preventive maintenance been done along the way, the expensive repair could have easily been avoided, and the equipment would have remained reliable for its intended life span.

The Solution!!

Very large yachts will typically employ a full-time captain and crew. Generally their job responsibilities will include managing maintenance and insuring the boat is ready for the owner to use at a moment’s notice. For boats that don’t require a full or part-time captain, the  Beyond Yachts – Yacht Maintenance Program is a perfect fit!  It consists of a combination of routine inspections and preventive maintenance outlined below.

Our Yacht Maintenance Program provides routine monthly vessel and systems inspections that are designed to test and exercise critical systems/equipment, and to catch problems before they become major issues, thus avoiding aggravating downtime. Everything from inspecting bilge water levels and pumps, battery water levels and voltage, test running equipment, looking over dock lines, checking navigation lights, and performing light routine maintenance (cleaning strainers, AC return air filters, etc.). Starting and loading engines and generators, running air conditioners, or checking battery voltage is not only good for the equipment, but can catch small problems before they become weekend-killers.

These predictive maintenance schedules are custom tailored to your mechanical equipment (engines, generators, etc.) and are developed from both the manufacturer’s predictive maintenance schedule and our industry knowledge of your equipment when used in our boating waters.

Berthon Spain is a yacht refit, repair and maintenance company with a brokerage office in Palma de Mallorca. We offer a bespoke yachting service to the Mediterranean yachting community, combining yacht technical support with yacht brokerage.

Berthon Spain’s expert team have successfully completed countless projects on a variety of size and type of vessels. The wide ranging skill sets available at Berthon Spain permits us to keep the majority of the work in-house, allowing us to keep full control over the project’s budget, timescale and quality of the work delivered. Our services include: Engineering, Electrical, Antifouling, Hydraulics, Fabrication, Plumbing and Guardiennage.

Yacht & Tender Storage

Berthon Spain have a custom built facility in Son Oms, a short drive from central Palma and close to Club Nautico S’Arenal. The 2000m2 warehouse is capable of storing yachts, up to 20 metres, looking to escape the winter weather and Palma’s high mooring costs. Within the facility we can also securely store, service and refit superyacht tenders, RIBs and jetskis.

At Berthon Spain we understand the importance of good communication and efficiency for the successful management of your yacht. With years of experience between us, we have the knowledge and know-how to assist in every aspect of day to day operations as well as broader refit and maintenance projects. Electric & Hybrid Propulsion

In 2008 the Italian propulsion specialist RTN started up their own brand ‘Auxilia Propulsion’ and supplied the first electric- hybrid propulsion system to Azimut-Benetti. In their production facility in The Netherlands they maufacture soundproof walls & doors, acoustic enclosures and silencers based on the exact wishes and needs of every customer. Exhaust Systems

TIO Yacht Exhaust Systems has been supplying for many decades both dry and wet exhaust systems to the world’s leading yacht builders for the main engines and the generator sets. They can manufacture silencers in nearly any shape and material meeting the highest noise and lowest exhaust back pressure requirements. TIO is also specialized in yacht exhaust system refits. They have developed partial silencers with a smart design that allows each part to pass through the narrowest door for assembly in the engine room.

Stabilizers

We are the dealer of the Dutch brand DMS Holland which, in addition to Naiad, Quantum, CMC, Wesmar and Vosper, is among the most important players in the field of external stabilizers. The owners of DMS Holland have both worked at Naiad. We are always able to select the right stabilizer for your yacht. Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.
