Luxury yacht engulfed in ball of flames off Spanish coast

This is the dramatic moment a luxury yacht caught fire off the Spanish island of Formentera.

Footage showed the 88-foot vessel engulfed in flames, with plumes of thick, black smoke billowing into the sky.

The Italian-designed cruiser was anchored off the beach of Es Cavall d’En Borràs in the Ses Salines Natural Park near where Hollywood A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days.

Five crew members and 12 passengers scrambled to abandon the vessel in a race against the time.

Only one of the crew members, a 39-year-old Spaniard, suffered minor burns and needed hospital treatment, the regional emergency response coordinators said.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the fire.

Flames could be seen spreading throughout the yacht in just a matter ofminutes, turning it into a fireball.

Local media reported that the vessel belonged to professional poker player Diego Gomez Gonzalez, aka ‘The Lion’, but this has not been confirmed by authorities.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the people on board were tourists who had chartered the yacht or guests of the owner.

Their nationalities have also not yet been made public either.

The alarm was sounded around 6pm on Saturday, with Spanish coastguards sent to the scene.

The yacht was towed further out to sea where the fire was put out.

Am Samstagabend ist eine Luxus-Yacht vor der spanischen Insel Formentera in Flammen aufgegangen. Die Passagiere und Besatzungsmitglieder konnten sich retten. Das Boot brannte völlig aus.

Vor der Baleareninsel Formentera ist am Samstagabend gegen 18 Uhr die luxuriöse Yacht des spanischen Profi-Pokerspielers Diego Gomez Gonzalez innerhalb von kurzer Zeit völlig ausgebrannt. Nach spanischen Medienberichten lag das 27 Meter lange Boot gerade auf Höhe des Strandes Cavall d'en Borràs vor Anker, als das Heck plötzlich in Flammen aufging.

Die verständigte balearische Agentur für die Sicherheit des Seeverkehres schickte umgehend Rettungsschiffe zum Einsatzort. Da sie die stark brennende Yacht nicht mehr löschen konnten, schleppten sie das Boot laut „ Ibiza Heute “ weg von den anderen umliegenden Yachten aufs Meer. Dort brannte es schließlich aus. Nach Informationen des „Majorca Daily Bulletin“ wird es voraussichtlich im Meer versinken.

Die zwölf Passagiere sowie die fünf Besatzungsmitglieder konnten das brennende Schiff kurz nach Ausbruch des Feuers über Beiboote sicher verlassen. Ein Besatzungsmitglied, ein 39-jähriger Spanier, erlitt bei der Rettungsaktion leichte Verbrennungen und musste laut „ Mallorca Magazin “ in einer Klinik behandelt werden. Alle weiteren Personen blieben unverletzt.

This is the dramatic moment a 88-foot luxury yacht goes up in flames off the paradise Mediterranean island of Formentera.

Onlookers gathered nearby in their own boats to watch the blaze take hold as thick black smoke rose high into the sky above the stricken vessel . Five crew and 12 passengers are said to have been on board the yacht but were able to abandon it in time despite the speed with which the fire engulfed the Italian-designed cruiser.

Terrifying video shows the flames roaring through the vessel, which is burnt back to little more than its frame in several places. The fire is thought to have ripped through the vessel in a matter of moments, sending it up in a massive fireball that could be seen from neighbouring Ibiza.

Only one of the crew members, described as a 39-year-old Spaniard who suffered minor burns, needed hospital treatment according to regional emergency response coordinators. The alarm was sounded around 6pm yesterday while the yacht was anchored off Es Cavall d’en Borras beach in the Ses Salines Natural Park.

Spanish coastguards confirmed this afternoon the yacht that went up in flames was called Irmao and it had sunk off a natural landmark called Punta de Sa Pedrera in Formentera. They shared a statement published alongside footage of coastguard vessel Acrux towing the stricken yacht further out to sea before it disappeared under the water.

It read: “Yesterday a fire occurred on board Irmao off of Formentera. Private vessels rescued the 17 people on board. Our centre in the Majorcan capital Palma mobilised Acrux which towed the yacht which was on fire, but it sank.” It was not immediately clear why the blaze had started.

The fine sand beach, one of the best in Formentera off Ibiza where Leonardo DiCaprio has been spotted partying in recent days, is home to famous bar-restaurants El Tiburon and Beso Beach. The yacht has been named locally as Irmao, which is based in Ibiza and marketed online as being available for “out-of-this-world charter vacations." It sleeps 12 in a VIP cabin, one double cabin and four twin cabins and charters for nearly £40,000 a week in high season.

One unconfirmed local report said the vessel belonged to Spanish poker shark Diego Gomez Gonzales, who also goes by "The Lion", according to Olive Press. Gonzales, 34, earned his nickname after attending the 2012 European Poker Tour in Prague dressed in a fully-body lion costume. It's currently unknown if Gonzales was on board at the time or whether it was being rented.

Gonzales was reportedly born in Madrid in 1988 and while growing up he started playing the card game with school pals and members of his family. As he got older he was drawn into the world of online poker before getting a place on the Spanish poker circuit. At the same tournament where he wore the lion suit, he came fifth and scored a whopping £200,000 prize.

The yacht was anchored off one of Formentera's most-stunning beaches. The island itself is one of the Balearics and is situated next to Ibiza. It is host to a number of world-famous bars, including El Tiburon and Beso Beach.

The nationalities of those on board have not yet been made public. Spanish coastguards responded to the emergency by towing the yacht further out to sea and assisting in putting out the flames. Last summer a £20 million superyacht owned by wealthy Italian businessman Paolo Scudieri went up in flames off the coast of Ibiza.

The 150ft vessel Aria SF caught fire on August 11, just a month after being delivered to its multi-millionaire owner. Spanish coastguards sent two rescue boats to the area as the nine passengers and seven crew on board abandoned ship after a Mayday call following a failed attempt to put out the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries. The black smoke the fire caused could be seen as far away as Majorca.

Augenzeugen sprachen gegenüber MM von mehreren lauten Knalls und Explosionen. Ein Video zeigt, wie die Mega-Yacht Raub der Flammen wird, die meterweit in den Himmel schlagen. Aus der Ferne ist eine pechschwarze Rauchsäule zu sehen.

Wie MM erfuhr, liegt das luxuriöse Schiff in der Cala Saona an der Westküste der Balearen-Insel. Ersten Recherchen zufolge handelt es sich dabei um die knapp 44 Meter lange "Aria SF", sie gehört zu den 1000 größten Luxusyachten der Welt. Ihr Besitzer soll ein italienischer Unternehmer sein, dessen Vermögen auf eine halbe Milliarde Euro geschätzt wird.

Angeblich hat die Yacht derzeit noch 30.000 Liter Treibstoff im Tank, Experten befürchten deshalb eine Umweltkatastrophe. Personen sollen sich jedoch nicht an Bord befinden, wie der erfahrene Skipper und Augenzeuge Lars Liewald gegenüber MM berichtete. Er habe dies über die Funkfrequenz mitbekommen. Derzeit versuchen Löschboote, das Feuer unter Kontrolle zu bekommen. Wie es zu der Katastrophe kam, ist bisher völlig unklar.

The yacht is reportedly owned by a Spanish poker player, Diego Gomez Gonzalez, known as “The Lion”. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

Die 45 Meter lange Luxusyacht Aria SF ist am Donnerstagnachmittag (11.8.) an der Cala Saona vor Mallorcas Nachbarinsel Formentera niedergebrannt. Das Unglück ereignete sich gegen 17 Uhr.

An Bord befanden sich zu dem Zeitpunkt insgesamt 16 Personen, neun Gäste und sieben Besatzungsmitglieder . Alle konnten das brennende Schiff unverletzt verlassen und wurden von der Guardia Civil an Land gebracht.

Erst um 21 Uhr war das Feuer gelöscht

Offenbar hatten die Besatzungsmitglieder zunächst selbst versucht, das Feuer zu löschen, dieses geriet aber schnell außer Kontrolle. Die dichten Rauschschwaden waren kilometerweit, teilweise sogar von Ibiza aus sichtbar. Nachdem der Notruf abgesetzt war, eilten zwei Einsatzboote der Seenotrettung und ein Patrouillenschiff der Guardia Civil zum Unglücksort.

Es dauerte bis 21 Uhr, bis das Feuer komplett gelöscht war. Es wurde ein Notfallprotokoll eingeleitet, um das Meer vor austretenden Schadstoffen zu schützen. Die Yacht erlitt einen Totalschaden. Über die Ursachen des Brandes gab es zunächst keine Informationen.

Die Aria SF gehört dem italienischen Unternehmer Paolo Scudieri, der ein Vermögen im Automobilbereich verdient hat. Der 62-Jährige ist laut Informationen der MZ-Schwesterzeitung "Diario de Ibiza" zudem Tourismusbotschafter des Fürstentums Monaco und Verwaltungsratsmitglied der Banco di Napoli. Er soll außerdem mit verschiedenen Unternehmen im Gastonomiebereich tätig sein. Ob der Besitzer während des Unglücks selbst an Bord war, ist nicht bekannt.

Erst 2022 vom Stapel gelaufen

Dem Fachportal Superyachtfan zufolge ist die Aria SF erst in diesem Jahr in Italien vom Stapel gelaufen. Entworfen wurde sie vom aus Venedig stammenden Designer Enrico Gobbi. Ihr Wert wird auf 25 Millionen Euro geschätzt. Sie bot Platz für zehn Gäste und sieben Besatzungsmitglieder , war also zum Zeitpunkt des Unglücks fast komplett besetzt. /pss

Far de Sa Mola Perched high above, overlooking the Mediterranean, this lighthouse is also known as “the lighthouse at the end of the world.” There is an exquisite view from here, and a monument to Jules Verne, who used Formentera as the setting of one of his famous novels.

Cap de Barbaria One of the most photographed spots on Formentera, it has a dry, desolate, moon-like landscape that leads to a lonely lighthouse at the end of a road. This is the lighthouse where Nobel prize winner Bob Dylan once lived. Just south is the Sa Cova Foradada, a famous cave that sits 100 meters above the sea.

Formentera Luxury Yacht Charters

Formentera is one of the smaller islands in the Balearics close to Ibiza which has become a popular location for superyachts and yacht charters. This may be because when you are on a superyacht charter vacation there are several places to anchor like Isla de Espalmador, Illetas, Playa de la Savina and Playa de Levante. Isla de Espalmador is part of a nature reserve and has beautiful white sandy beaches while Illetas has gently shelving clear water covering white coral sand. Playa de la Savina and Playa de Levante both offer magnificent beaches where you can relax and top up your tan. With pretty coves, spectacular sunsets and lots to do, Formentera is a charter vacation destination like no other.

Most of the beaches here are idyllic with restaurants and bars dotted around. Being close to the busy island of Ibiza, Formentera provides a peaceful haven for yacht charterers. You could ask your captain to visit Menorca or Mallorca to get an idea of the charm of these beautiful Balearic Islands. Back to Formentera with its sand dunes, lots of pine trees, sleepy harbour towns and busy markets.

Take a trip into Es Pujols which is on the island’s northern coast. There are many cocktail bars, open-air street cafes, a saltwater lagoon and a splendid sandy beach. Further into town you'll find souvenir shops and lots of places to eat or drink. A ten-minute drive will get you to Platja de Migjorn which also has bars, restaurants, dunes and salt flats. As Formentera is so small, 12 miles long by 8 miles wide, it won't take long to explore the entire island. La Savina is the port where there's a lovely beach, inland lagoons and amazing views when you look back towards the larger Balearic Islands. The harbour front is a fantastic place to watch boats going to and fro while enjoying a cup of coffee in one of the cafes.
