From cosy yacht club to world knowledge bank

Bernard d’alessandri, general secretary and managing director of yacht club de monaco, explores its evolution from meeting place to platform for change….

Image for article From cosy yacht club to world knowledge bank

The superyacht industry is at an interesting juncture in its development. Unlike previous years, when growth was primarily focused on selling and building as many vessels as possible, there is now a much greater emphasis on sustainable growth and long-term viability.

Yacht Club de Monaco has a vital role to play in the superyacht industry’s future and its model has changed to take on far more responsibility, leveraging its vital link between owner and industry.

“If we go back to 2012, the Yacht Club de Monaco in its current form did not exist. We were in a different location on the other side of the marina,” says general secretary and managing director Bernard d’Alessandri. “It was, like most other yacht clubs, a cosy traditional yacht club that served as a meeting place for our various members. However, when we changed the building to where we are today, the expectations for what we must achieve changed overnight.

“Today, our primary roles are twofold. Firstly, we are the world’s premier yacht club and, secondly, we have a duty to promote yachting and Monaco to the world.”

monaco yacht club owner

While this view might be contested by various other yachting hubs around the world, it’s generally accepted that Monaco is the true global capital of yachting and, as such, it was never likely that Yacht Club de Monaco (YCM) would be able to continue being just a yacht club in the purest sense. The world, whether Monaco and the yacht club like it or not, looks to the region to set the agenda for the yachting community and lead by example when it comes to supporting and implementing change.

Of course, there are limits to what an institution such as YCM can achieve given the complexity of the assets, the profile of their owners and the speed and variety of ongoing developments.

“In terms of development, YCM’s most important role is to be a platform of communication. We have to present the solutions to our members and try to create links between them and the premium industry at large,” adds d’Alessandri.

“Within an industry that is so incredibly complex, from the engine room to the unique relationships between stakeholders, it is impossible to contain all the necessary knowledge in-house. That said, it is our job to do whatever we can to bring the most pertinent developments, especially where this relates to sustainable solutions.”

With such a high concentration of industry players and businesses within an area of only two kilometres (1,561 employees, 150 companies and €753m of annual superyachting revenue), YCM, on moving to its current facility in 2012, launched the Monaco Capital of Yachting project to further strengthen the business in the region and reaffirm the Principality’s position as a global leader.

“Without immediate change, there simply will be no industry in the future. As the oceans become increasingly damaged, fewer and fewer people will want to go yachting. The two are inexorably linked and we must do everything in our power to protect the oceans.”

At its core, the Capital of Yachting project focused on the promotion of luxury and superyachting, and how they both related to Monaco. However, earlier this year, it was determined that the Capital of Yachting project simply did not go far enough, so YCM launched Monaco Capital of Advanced Yachting.

At that launch, Pierre Dartout, minister of state for Monaco, said, “The vision is simple: Monaco must always be ahead on economic and environmental issues. We must mobilise all stakeholders. It is an essential factor in our economy’s appeal to business as the Principality offers an exceptional network of all professions operating in this industry.”

“Because of the influence that Monaco has on the superyacht industry, we have a responsibility to promote not only luxury and the superyacht experience, but also the most sustain-able and beneficial ways of yachting,” says d’Alessandri. “Personally, I feel an immense amount of guilt and shame for the way that the industry has conducted itself up to this point.

“Of course, during certain periods, we were not furnished with all the necessary information, nor indeed were certain systems and practices available to make yachting more sustainable. Nevertheless, I am determined to use my remaining time to leave the industry in as good a position as possible to try to balance my own impact.

The guiding principle of the Advanced Yachting project is to drive growth that is not only economically sound, but also pays due respect to the environment through engaging stakeholders in a number of projects to promote sustainable yachting.

However, it’s important not to see the project as just a sustainability initiative because the industry’s future and growth is dependent on making sustainability an economically viable option. Pulling the project together is a charter that allows stakeholders to make clear their commitment to sustainable development.

Founded by YCM and Credit Suisse, the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) has been introduced to increase the industry’s awareness of its carbon footprint. Through the SEA Index, YCM and its partners aim to create a clear system for rating the carbon efficiency of superyachts.

While there are also various other systems of measurement, these are primarily aimed at technically and scientifically minded businesses and individuals; the SEA Index aims to simplify the process to allow owners and other major stakeholders to easily track the credentials of their own vessels, with a mind to making changes and improving their ratings.

The hope is that the SEA Index will become a global standard of measurement for the industry. As well as the SEA Index, a number of ongoing programmes, including Ocean Week and Energy Boat Challenge, will continue to drive the sustainable agenda.

“Faced with the now all too obvious effects of the climate emergency, we need to be agents of change,” emphasises d’Alessandri. “The whole yachting eco-system has to evolve. As a communication platform, YCM wants to highlight and test new solutions, like alternative power sources for boats; that’s the aim of YCM’s Monaco Energy Boat Challenge that celebrates 10 years [5-8 July 2023].

“But it’s also vital to have intelligent virtuous marinas to accommodate them, hence our support for the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous [25-26 September 2022]. It really is a unique opportunity to get the whole ecosystem together – start-ups, manufacturers, investors, yachting professionals, etc. – to build the future. After all, marinas are like micro-cities.”

To fully understand the evolution of YCM, an analogy can be drawn between it and the World Bank. Originally created to provide loans, debt relief and various other financial mechanisms to promote free market-led recovery in struggling nations, the World Bank realised a number of years ago that its primary function was not enough to spearhead effective change.

Gradually, the World Bank developed the notion of becoming a knowledge bank as well as being a financial institution, and YCM has gone through a similar transition. Its original model, a cosy yacht club, was not sufficient to support sustainable growth of the industry. Today, YCM is a knowledge bank and communications platform that is taking on ever more responsibility for the development of the industry.

As the conduit between the premium industry and some of the world’s most influential superyacht owners, the platform and communications channel that YCM now represents is vital for not only stimulating market growth, but also stimulating the right kind of market growth. D’Alessandri and his team have a vital role to play in showing the market how change should be implemented.

Explorer Dock inaugurated at Monaco Yacht Club

Posted by Staff Writer | Mar 22, 2024 | Yachting & Aviation

Explorer Dock inaugurated at Monaco Yacht Club

The inauguration ceremony of the first Explorer Dock took place at the Yacht Club de Monaco earlier this week, as part of the activities planned for the Ocean Week and under the aegis of ‘Monaco, Capital of Advanced Yachting.’

The seven yachts displayed on the quay of the Club, M/Y Beyond Capricorn, M/Y Prometej, M/Y Audace, M/Y King Benji, S/Y NDS Evolution, M/Y U Boat Navigator and M/Y Santandrea, represent a combination of passion for adventure and innovation. Each one is designed to navigate beyond traditional boundaries and face the challenges of the oceans.

Capturing everyone’s attention on the quay was the christening of the brand new M/Y King Benji. Attending the event dedicated to the 46 metre megayacht, built by Dunya Yachts and designed by Greg Marshall, were many guests alongside the Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary Bernard d’Alessandri.

“I am very humbled and proud to be here because it took years to build this yacht. It required a lot of passion, dedication and team work with Greg Marshall and other designers. And finally she’s here and we’re proud of it,” said Sedat Ergun, owner of Dunya Yachts. “We’re thriving to be a custom builder, we’re building many different yachts. Everyone’s different from each other. We love exploration. So when the client came to us, we loved it and we got on well since day one. It actually is a funny story because he came in as a crew member so we didn’t know he was the client. We talked about it and I said ‘we love the project’ and I think he felt the passion about it,” he added. Everything started from a sketch. “I flew to a meeting with the owner and he described what he was looking for and why he couldn’t buy it anywhere in the world. So I pulled out a piece of paper and just started drawing and in the first minutes he said ‘that’s it.’”

“We adjusted the sketches and it was just what you see here and it never happens. The boat is what I’d design for myself. We had a full-sized mock up build of the boat so we could walk through it 4-5 years ago. And now to see it here surrounded by the Yacht Club it just makes your skin tingle,” said Greg Marshall.

The Environmental Symposium, a day of conference for the industry, owners and captains, took place on Thursday, March 21, organised in collaboration with The Explorer’s Club of New York.

A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the ‘explorer’ activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous took place, organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

Owners Lunch at the Yacht Club de Monaco: Explorers and scientists at the rendezvous

Owners Lunch

On the opening day of the Monaco Yacht Show, Yacht Club de Monaco invited a hundred owners of yachts flying the YCM flag for its traditional Owners Lunch. This year, the sum of the linear metres of their yachts was 2,207m. On this occasion an agreement was signed with The Explorers Club, founded in 1904 to promote scientific exploration. In 1921, Prince Albert 1st was made an honorary member while in 2017 YCM President HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco received the prestigious Lowell Thomas Award from The Explorers Club.

Joining forces for a common goal

“This agreement reflects yet again our Club’s commitment to environmental issues, as well as the bond that unites Monaco and The Explorers Club,”  says Bernard d’Alessandri, Yacht Club de Monaco General Secretary. “ Our wish is to bring together all those who are witnesses to climate change and those working to combat the problem”.

“ It means we share the same missions, one of which is to preserve the planet in every way possible or imaginable. We are joining forces in the noble quest for innovation, paving the way to a brighter more sustainable future for our oceans and the world,”  adds  Sir William Roseman , Executive Director at The Explorers Club which has 4,000+ members from over 60 countries.

Owners Lunch

The challenge of an era

Also present as a guest at the Owners Lunch was  Dr Nina Lanza , Team Leader for Team Lead for Space and Planetary Exploration in Space Remote Sensing and Data Science (ISR-6) at the Los Alamos Laboratory. “ The ocean has long captured our imaginations. We have always considered it to be an eternal, unlimited resource. But appearances can be deceptive. Oceans are much more ephemeral than we often think they are,”  explained the researcher. “ Oceans are probably the cradle of life. That’s why exploration is so important: it teaches us to know ourselves and know the future”.

The attendance of these two leading figures echoes the  13th Environmental Symposium,  due to be held 21st March 2024 before the  YCM   Explorers Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts , two initiatives under the aegis of the collective ‘Monaco, Capital of  Advanced  Yachting’ approach. “ We reward people who genuinely care about sustainability. We need to understand that our impact on the planet is disproportionate and that we can actually alter our environment. This event is an opportunity to recognise those who are doing their best to maintain these sustainable explorations,”  believes Dr Nina Lanza. A sentiment shared by Sir William Roseman for whom this meeting is essential. As he says, “ we would not be here today discussing these issues if YCM and its members did not share the same objective”.

It is through these international events that YCM is establishing itself as a proactive stakeholder in the environmental transition of yachting, positioning itself as a communication platform for all those involved in building the yachting sector of tomorrow.

We had a full-sized mock up build of the boat so we could walk through it 4-5 years ago. And now to see it here surrounded by the Yacht Club it just makes your skin tingle,” said Greg Marshall. From the famous naval architect pencil also came out the M/Y Artefact, that won the YCM Explorer Award in 2022.

Meanwhile everything’s ready for the Environmental Symposium. A day of conference for the industry, owners & captains, taking place on Thursday the 20th of March, organised in collaboration with The Explorer’s Club of New York. A large delegation from the US is visiting the Club and taking part not only in all the ‘explorer’ activities on the quay but also in regattas, sailing experiences involving for example the YCM flagship Tuiga. In the afternoon it will be time for the Explorer Awards by La Belle Classe Superyachts. The aim is to recognise owners who take their environmental responsibilities seriously. The major criteria for these awards are the owner’s conception of their superyacht, how they use it and what it can do for humanity. It could be a technical innovation that significantly reduces the yacht’s CO2 emissions, the assistance given to scientists, or just an ability to pass on and share adventures at sea so that many more people come to respect, love and protect the Ocean.

On Thursday and Friday the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous also will be on. Organised in partnership with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and YCM, it is a natural extension of the Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marina Rendezvous.

World’s richest celebrate end of summer at €4bn Monaco yacht show

Number of billionaires interested in superyachts said to have grown despite Russia sanctions and global economic crisis

“C hange the TV channels now,” the captain of a $95m (£85m) Albatross superyacht calls out to a deckhand. “That guy has probably lost two mil in the last two minutes and we’re trying to convince him to drop 95.”

“That guy” is a prospective buyer of the 72-metre long vessel floating in Monaco’s Port Hercules where the world’s richest people (and their entourages) have gathered this week for the annual yacht show . With more than €4bn (£3.5bn) worth of marine luxury on display, it is as brokerage firm Burgess puts it: “The chicest way for billionaires to celebrate the end of summer”.

The TVs on Albatross – there are more than a dozen onboard – are beaming out live coverage of another day of economic chaos on business channel CNBC as the US market open down 2%.

That brief glimpse, before the screens are hurriedly switched off, is the only sign in this millionaires’ playground of the economic trouble affecting the outside world. The sanctions against Russian oligarchs, whose conspicuous consumption has kept European shipyards so busy in recent years, have not spoiled the party. Veuve Clicquot champagne or Whispering Angel rosé is available at some stands for free for anyone with a ticket to the show ( tickets if you were to buy them cost €500 a pop ).

“Of course the industry is impacted [by the global economic crisis], says Francesca Webster, the editor-in-chief of the trade industry publication SuperYacht Times. “But the number of billionaires has grown over the last two years meaning that there has been a rebalance despite the loss of the Russian clientele. Some shipyards are suggesting that the number of serious future clients – aka billionaires – has grown from around 25 to 30, almost all of which are American or Asian.”

Albatross is huge. The principal suite spans the whole 13-metre beam (width) of the yacht and includes a dressing room and two large bathrooms (one with a floral design in silver mosaics, and the other depicting golden clouds). There are five further large bedroom suite cabins, several large salons, a fully equipped gym, an eight-person jacuzzi, and a “touch-and-go” helipad all connected by a glass elevator.

The broker won’t confirm who is selling Albatross, although the six-year-old yacht has previously been reported as belonging to Majid Al Futtaim , an Emirati shopping malls and hotels billionaire who died last December.

It is far from the biggest vessel on show. That title goes to Ahpo, which is 115.1 metres long and moored on the other side of the port. Unfortunately, the Guardian is not welcomed onboard that yacht as “you don’t look like likely charterers”.

It’s a fair cop. Ahpo, which has eight bedroom suites as well as a gym, swimming pool, spa, sauna – and hammam, beauty room, piano bar and dancefloor, costs a minimum of €2.5m a week to charter.

That’s before “expenses”, which include fuel, food, drinks, and docking and mooring fees that can easily run into tens of thousands a night for yachts as large as Ahpo in billionaires’ favourite spots, such as Portofino, the Amalfi coast and Cagliari in Sardinia.

The crew also expect tips in the region of €1,500-2,500 a week each, according to several captains who spoke on condition of anonymity. There are 36 crew members on Ahpo.

Despite the costs, a broker at Moran, which arranges charters, says the yacht was rented for six weeks this summer and is “fast booking up for next year”.

Tristan Hooper, the captain of Luna B, a 66-metre yacht available for charter at a more reasonable €500,000 a week, says the vessel was rented for 12 weeks last year and by a wide range of people. “We’ve had all sorts of guests, from A-listers to Middle Eastern royalty,” he says onboard the $60m craft. “We thrive with tall people, because we have a high ceiling height.” (Yes, NBA basketball players have chartered the vessel, but he refuses to name names).

Asked about tips, Hooper says a €2,000 tip is “pretty standard”. “You hear stories of way more than that,” he says. “But on other charters you can be working really hard all week and walk away with nothing.”

The billionaire Jamaican-Canadian investor Michael Lee Chin upgraded to the Ahpo – the phonetic pronunciation of the Chinese pictogram meaning Grand Lady – after selling his $130m Quattroelle to the Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al-Maktoum.

Both were built by Germany’s Lürssen Yachts, which also created Dilbar, the world’s largest superyacht by volume. It is one of more than a dozen superyachts seized from oligarchs subjected to sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dilbar, which cost a reported $600m and is allegedly owned by the family of the sanctioned metals magnate Alisher Usmanov , was seized by authorities in Hamburg in April.

Germany said it had detained the yacht, apparently named after Usmanov’s mother, because it was ultimately owned by his sister, Gulbakhor Ismailova. Usmanov has denied this.

This week, German police investigating money-laundering accusations searched the yacht. Prosecutors, who did not name Usmanov, said they were investigating money laundering and tax evasion allegations concerning a 69-year-old Russian business man. A spokesperson for Usmanov, who is 69, said the police and prosecutor investigations were “examples of blatant lawlessness under the guise of the sanctions law”.

The boat builders and brokers in Monaco are reluctant to talk about the impact of Russian sanctions on the superyacht industry despite oligarchs making up a fairly large chunk of the market, particularly at the priciest end.

The former Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich has bought seven, and still owns three including the 162.5-metre Eclipse, which was the world’s largest when he bought it in 1998. He has avoided having his yachts seized by taking them to Turkey, while other sanctioned oligarchs have sheltered their boats in Dubai.

It’s all too much for Pauline, one of thousands of people hired to work at the show as stewards, security guards or to pilot small rigid inflatable boats to transport people around the harbour.

“I work at a lot of events, but this is the only one that drives me crazy, it is just so wrong,” Pauline, 27, says as she helps guest to board one of the RIBs. “It’s wrong to be spending all this money on these things, and it’s just terrible for the planet – think how much pollution they make. These are really big buildings on the water. Sometimes I just want to do something to stop it all.”
